Sears Tower
I have mentioned before that I would struggle to ever have office space in the buildings that they are building to replace the World Trade Center Towers. I was just watching a documentary yesterday at the events leading up to 9/11. The people involved tried to attack one of the World Trade Center Towers back several years earlier. They were determined to bring it down. To me it is a given that I would not want to work on a regular basis in a tower like that. I could visit it and even go inside it. But the risk of working in it every day would be scary.
But my fear also extends to other potential targets. I have a subscriber who works on the 86th floor of the Sears Tower. I could never work in that tower either. I am not saying that I would never work in a skyscraper. But I would struggle to work in one that I thought was a big target.
Would you be able to work in the 86th floor of the Sears Tower?

yes
I don’t know. I think I’d have to get used to it.
I don’t think I could ever work in any building like that, especially not a famous one, too big of a target
nope. the height thing would drive me bonkers.
im not big on heights so i probably wouldnt
Oh and visit momofjenmatt if you get the chance- she has you as one of the starring characters in today’s post (courtesy of my “crabs” post yesterday. LOL)
I guess it depends on the type of job I’d have. I’d normally just say no because it’s too much of a risk, but if the job is something I really enjoy and I feel I’m helping others, then it might be worth it.
I think so, yeah.
I don’t think so. I wouldn’t want to work in a famous building unless the pay was amazing.
yeah I would
i would never
no
Nope. I’d be afraid to look out the window too. :X
I would.
I’d probably job-shop.
You are much more likely to die in a car wreck driving to work than in the Sears Tower. Living life in fear of the “what ifs” doesn’t do anything but make it more difficult.
Amen to DuMont82! ^^^
If my job took me there, yes. I do not think that we can let terrosist change the way we live. If we do then they have won.
The mental challenge wouldn’t be the job … it would be dealing with how many levels I am from the ground! I am trying to say now freaken way!
that wouldn’t be to swell for me! Tall Buildings HORRIFY me!
I would, we have so little control over if we live or die. Basically anywhere can be considered a target. A packed stadium, a shopping mall, a large university. You are more likely to die on the way to work, or at home than where you spend 10-12 hours a day for a few years
that’s is a vermeer painting… thissideof_paradise…. she’s got a vermeer. do you like art? vermeer is one of my favorites… he plays a lot with details and loves women….. he pained stories…. he painted life.
I would work in that floor… can’t live afraid you know… I think if it is in the plan I will fall w/ the building.
Have an awesome day… I give you my word Dan… I will be first one of these days… I ain’t afraid of the smurff.
No, not unless I had no other choice and then I would have to trust the Lord and not worry.
Yes, but rather not, doncha know…
Yes, if it’s my time to go-so be it! Thank you so much for the birthday wishes, Dan! I have an old Christmas poem I wrote years ago, see what you think?!
sure!
I abide in the shadow of the Almighty, I can go anywhere.
I’ll have to be totally honest. I would not have had a problem with it prior to 9/11/2001. But as of today…No way. Put in in a shack out in the middle of the forest with a TV, Telephone…oh and of course a computer. At least 1 grocery store or general store within 5 miles.
yeah. except i really i’d get bored!!
yeah. i’d get bored.
: D
I saw that program also about events leading up to 9/11. Certainly eye opening.
Nope, I would not work in a tall building either. My uncle, who was the fire chief where I live, always told me they should not build buildings taller than what a ladder truck could reach. I think that is sound advice.
Nope. Scared of heights.
I think it would freak me out
No, I’d be afraid of climbing stairs or being in elevators.
Those things creep me out.
Nope.. I wouldn’t
I just discovered your site so I’m new here, but to answer your query… no I wouldn’t work there. Not because of the terrorist threat, but because of the constant rat race atmosphere related to huge business building such as the Sears Tower.
Nope. I hate flying on commercial airliners too, even though I know it’s a necessity.
i think i could. i guess it all depends on the job.
No way, not after Sept. 11th.
Probably, but I would rather not I have a major fear of heights!! lol
I don’t know if I’d be able to work on the 86th floor of any building…could you imagine if the elevator wasn’t working??
no, I’d look out the window and feel like I would fall out. Seriously. If I look out of the window of something that’s really tall, I automatically feel off balance and dizzy.
no i be scaed ob hitez
My dad used to work in the Sears Tower. It was scary, just becuae he was on some freaky high floor and the building actually swayed. You could feel it. RYC: I know you would never do that, I was using creative licence. Thanks for coming by!!!
yes.. with a parachute in my desk

i wouldnt mind
That is soooo cool. I want to be on the top floor so I can look at all the ants down below!
At first, i’d probably always be paranoid, and waiting for something to happen, but slowly i’d start to feel more comfortable in it.
depends on what kind of job i had to do
No. I have agorophobia.
i don’t think i could work in an office period.
ryc- you are SO Sagitarius it is not even funny!!!
I love to go up in the Sears Tower every chance I get. But I think about the same thing….I would NOT want to work there on a daily basis. I would always be plotting my emergency exit strategy. I had a hard time working on the 13th floor in my old office building downtown OKC. I would always stare out the window and wonder what fear went through the victims of 911 that wou ld cause them to jump out the window. It’s scary stuff to think about, and I would be thinking it all the time if I worked in a tall building again.
No…but not because I would be scared…more along the lines of I would rather die than work in an office.
yes…i would enjoy the view a lot. if i had children and a spouse, i probably wouldn’t be so sure, though.
p.s. i ate brunch at the john hancock center a couple of years ago…the lake michigan and the city were gorgeous.
No.. Not because of the fear of it coming down so much..but I have discovered I like working for small companies. I like the close knit family fear. I worked for a large bank and managed a branch..and I though I loved it…till I got the job I have now.
YEAH, SWEET VIEW
the job would prolly suck, i would do anything to be in the music industry (i’m a drummer), but no, i wouldn’t be afraid of working high up.
i love heights and that would be utterly wonderful to work on the 86th floor of any building with a view.
I used to work on the 69th Floor of Tower 2 at the WTC. I felt like I was on top of the world. It is terrible that the WTC fell, I had a friend who died there, but I have to admit that the WTC stood for money and power. I don’t mind tall buildings, I just wish the people working in those buildings didn’t focus so much on money, power, and climbing the corp ladder.
It’s a risk i’d take.
I’d love to work up there…despite the possible danger of an attack. Hey itll give me an excuse to go skydiving and learn how to use a parachute if anything =p
I’m not sure
I don’t think I could ever work in a building that tall. Only because I’m not that huge of a fan of elevators and that’s a whole lotta stairs!
No, I don’t think I’d wanna work up there!
Can I be added to the protected list?
One cannot live in fear. If he does, then the terrorists have succeeded in their aim- disrupting otherwise normal lives.
yes.
Doom with a view?
i could. i bet anyone could. but i wouldnt. i *shiver* i would just be reminded of 9/11 evertime i walked to work every morning. and it would make me and my family worry too much. i mean why not take chances, but why take chances. you know?
and for the people that would really like to b/c of the view….
what if you weren’t in an office with an outside window???
Definitely. I love heights and the Chicago skyline is the coolest I’ve seen yet in the world.
eh…. save Tokyo, the coolest.
~
i would probably be able to do it because of the fact that if i die, i die, i am not meaning to say i want to, because by all means, i really want to live… but, if that is what happens it happens. I would mostly just have to get used to looking out the windows.. lol
Madeline loves the Sears Tower, so yes, I would work there. I would die a happy woman.
ryc: yes, just a bit.
yea i would!
Terriffied of heights, mainly because I get an unexplicable urge to jump…so no.
~Nicky
A slightly increased chance of death is a small price for looking out over the world and seeing it spread out below yourself.
The quest for every larger heights has driven men to risk their lives time and time again for the record of the best. The desire for greatness at the expense of safety is what drives mankind onto new heights and new accomplishments. It is what makes us who we are.
I wouldn’t !
I struggle to work. I would make such a good retiree. But not in any tower.
I guess I could do that. Life is so random. I think my chances of getting hit by a bus or by lightning are actually greater than being killed on the 96th floor of the Sears Tower. The whole height thing would probably bother me more than any threat to the building itself.
Hey! You changed your jacket and tie! Looking good!
I probably could…if it was the last job on earth! Seriously, being in tall buildings never used to bother me, but for the past few years I’ve had a recurring nightmare about riding in an elevator to an impossibly high floor in a building. So it’s not so much being on the 86th floor that bothers me as much as the ride up, and I don’t think many people can handle 86 flights of stairs every day.
Yup, but only because I have an unjustified ego.
I would, God is in control and my life is in His hand
no.. but that’s just because i’m really terrified of heights. otherwise, i don’t think i’d mind.
RYC: In theory I can make local phone calls from the hospital. I am trying to figure out if I will be able to use G’s laptop while I’m there. G thinks I should make frequent updates while I am laboring at home, asking people if they’d like to make any changes to their “Guess When My Baby Is Arriving” guesses. Not having been through labor before, I don’t know if I will feel like doing this or not. Don’t know if I am comfortable with handing over my posting to anyone – most people around here don’t probably realize that I have a blog. G knows, but he has a hard enough time just sending e-mail. The way insurance companies kick us ladies out of the hospital so quickly, I’m sure I’ll be back after a short down time! It would be cool to let people know when I’ve actually had the baby, even if it’s just a brief message. That would be nice.
So, can’t live without me for a couple days??
heh
ryc-
These are the adjectives that describe Sagitarius, that I feel your blog says about you (you like how I made sure to cover my a*& since in truth I don’t know you) inquisitive, truth seeker, intellectual, interested in philosophy and religion (ok just your profile pic gives me this impression
, knowledge being key and here’s the quote that makes me think of your blog “Sagittarians are truth-seekers, and the best way for them to do this is to hit the road, talk to others and get some answers. Knowledge is key to these folks, since it fuels their broad-minded approach to life.” So you’ve hit the virtual road, but here you are.
sure… if it’s my time to die, then it’s my time… regardless of where I am, it’s God’s time, not mine…
Its something I would need to get used to. I’m not very good with heights…But I think I would do it.
Honestly, if I got paid well enough, I would probably work just there.
yes.
you know why?
FUCK EM ALL.
FUCK EM.
say it with me.
FUCK EM.
now turn around,
and tell em to kiss yer ass while they’re at it.
amen
I suppose that I could if that was where the job I wanted was located. Why put a fear ahead of your dream? If it’s a job you know you’d be happy to have, then you shouldn’t let fear guide your life. And that’ s in any situation. Fear should not inhibit you from living. The same way the “media” says to be careful in crowded shopping malls because they could be “terrorism targets”. Is that going to keep me from shopping if I want to go there? No, that’s ridiculous. Live life, don’t let life pass you by.
But if that’s your reason for not going to work there, then that should be your cue that you don’t really like your job that much and you need to do something else with your life.
Yeah, I would. No use going through life being afraid of ‘what if.’
yess
For me personally, I think it would be difficult. I went to the Trade Center around a month before 9-11, and about 6 months after. It was mind blowing seeing it before and after…and made things a little more real for me anyway.
No. Fear of heights.
The 85th, but not the 86th.
larry
I have worked in some pretty dangerous areas ranging from the ocean floor to petrochemical volatile compounds. There is no more risk working in those buildings than living within the confines of New York were a Nuke to go off. When working I may have some conscious memory of the risk but it is not something to dwell on. You can die in your home to freakish events ranging from meteors to cars ending up in the bed room.
Some may say that I have been desensitized to risk due to some of the extreme hazards I have dealt with but I would leave you with one thought and that is that when the appointed time arrives, in whichever fashion, there is little you can do to change it except look up to the expecting arms of God.
It is better to live and live well than dwell on what could be (better or worse)…
Charles
If I can’t jump out a window and live, I’m not working there!
I probably could but only if I forced myself.
Just wanted to compliment you on a really cool site and very thought-provoking writing. It’s really refreshing when, after reading all my friends’ “blah blah blah” xangas, I finally get to read a xanga that is intellectually stimulating. Keep it up.
I doubt I would have a job that would place me in that building.
But I would probably work there without too much worry if I did.
When your time’s up, it’s up. No matter where you are.
Heck no
Heck yeah. Lighting doesn’t strike twice, as they say. I would never live in fear. I would rather not work in the Sears Tower, though, I’m pretty much aversive to the business world or any fast-paced work. : ^ )
my cousin worked in the WTC…
both times
and survived…
her dad told her…
” you will never have to go there again…”
i could not….
but i have related…deep rooted issues..with heights..and the towering inferno..and… airplanes
rather a wreck… i guess …*sigh*
as long as the elevators work. no way could I walk up that many stairs.
YEp. Not a problem.
I do work on the 86th floor ot the sears tower
oh, wait…that subscriber you were talking about is me.. hee hee hee.
My sister was in NY visiting friends that week. She was going to leave on 9/11, right after the tour they planned to take of the WTC around 9 AM. But the night before, she suddenly fell ill and had a sudden urge to go home. She woke up the next morning, said goodbye to her friends (with apologies) and drove back to NH, where she lives. She switched on the television, went into the kitchen to get some breakfast and heard the first reporting of what happened…
Intervention? I have chills up my spine whenever I think of it.
I would be able to, but wouldn’t want to work on the 86th floor.
Who is the president?
i wouldent! not cuz of fear of being in the tower, but just cuz i hate big citys! there crazy!
You realize you’re going to die eventually anyway, right?
honestly, yeah, I would…terrorism would probably be one of the least of my concerns…and imagine the view you’d have from that floor!
I would rather not work in any sort of tower, but if there is a job there that I need to do, then yes I would work in the 86th floor of the sears tower
I would work in the new trade centers too
too me, no one is too “good” to do a scary job if it’s a job that needs to be done. That’s why I also get so mad at job snobs who won’t work in the inner city. Some one’s gotta do it.
-megan
I believe in destiny. I believe there is time for every one to go, i mean go as in die. But letting the death control my every day living is not I have ever thought about. I enjoy heights and scary rides and all the unusual activities, as long as they are safe. Since I started as a Civil Engineer, I truely believe that whatever we construct is safe enough to be lived in or have space as office in. Yes I would love an office space on 86th floor or even beyond, one day, lol
sure why not ?? you will go sometime so if you work ther
nope i dont think that i would not just because could be a big target but because of the whole how high it is in the air sry not into the whole heights thing
No, I dont think so
I get scared on the second step of my kitchen stool!
I guess I would
No. Definitely not.
Well, maybe if I really needed the money…
nope
Have to do what you have to do.
THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would prolly stair at the window till I go blind!
I’m sure I’d be able to get over the fact that I’m about a third of a mile up in the air after a while. At least I could if I stayed away from the windows.
Lived in Chicago for a while, so yes, I could.
Depends on the money involved, but I would want a lower floor, just in case something happened and I could get out. There is always that risk since 9/11.
No, but not for the same reason. I just am not really big on heights in general…
