  • Competitive

My wife, my sons and I went to play laser tag this afternoon.  It is amazing how a game that only last for 15 minutes can cause you to feel so tired.  I have played several times in the past.  I don’t consider myself the best player but I play to win.

One time I took my youngest son to play when he was about 5.  I just assisted him and didn’t play myself.  So I got him up to one of the high places and then blocked his body so no one could shoot him.  I helped him with the shooting.  At times I would just take the gun out of his hands and would shoot for him.  He was only five but he was in second place out of about 14-15 kids.

This time he was on his own.  He is 8 and he can fend for himself.  I was going to play on my own.  I took up my gun and looked for a high place to shoot the opposition.  About halfway through the game I made a deal with my oldest son.  We would not shoot each other but would work together to win.  He agreed.  The child can not be trusted in such an agreement.  He got behind me and started to shoot me.  I couldn’t believe the little fart.  He shot me in the back.

But as I went to the top part, I had gotten myself into a good position.  Then my little son went up there with me.  He is only eight and he wanted my help.  I told him to go away.  He was bringing too much attention to my spot.  He was all upset and began to cry.  I told him to quit crying and go find his own spot.  He persisted.

Name a game that brings out your competitive side.

  • oh my god! i cant comment. i really dont have a competive side. a show off side, on occasion, but not that kind of streak. that was a hilarious blog. you know this is gonna cost you big in psychoanalyst appointments down the road.

  • water polo

  • Softball. Oh man….

    ELVIS

  • Monopoly. I am relentless!

  • I can’t think of a game but I CAN think of activities.  I like games that reflect on intellect…. !!! … I am a friggin’ nerd.

  • It’s a game called “Switchboard”.  Nobody I ever talk to has ever heard of it.. but it’s fun.

    Kisses!!  Wendy

  • I have this weird adrenaline that starts pumpin’ whenever my family and I play scrabble. It’s like a hormone or something. Very fun, though.

And Dutch Blitz, a game everyone should know how to play. Don’t know it? Google it.

And Euchre too. Very competitive at that too.

    Dan

    P.S. FIFTH!

  • I know, and counting….

  • Ah. Just kidding. 9th.

  • Your sons are ‘liberals’ *tongue firmly planted in cheek*

  • Haha! You told your own 8 yearold son to go away. Thats hilarious.

Ryc: Thanks for coming by. I can’t think of anything better than a giftcard to Borders. I’m a avid reader, and love music just as much.

  • “Top GPA in chosen major.”

    -Hil

  • Dating.

  • Either poker or video games

  • They all do, to a degree.  The ones that bother me the most are the video games when I play my son and he has a million years of playing to my .03 hours.  Then he laughs and laughs as I die over and over and over.  :-

Capture the Flag with his scout troop can be REALLY competative.  The things the kids will do…and the adults too.  heh….thorn bush.

  • “I couldn’t believe the little fart. ” Hahahaa

But that’s mean that you made your 8-year-old kid cry. =

  • chess

  • EVERYTHING!!!!!!

  • Jenga … I become … like … possessed

  • i’m pretty competitive in the hobbies i have: basketball, poker, weightlifting..

  • Ok you called one son a fart and made the other one cry. You are so not getting the father of the year award today.

  • I am competitive about memory games as well as strategy games (chess is a fav. of mine as well).

  • I’m not so much of a competitive person because I spend my time doing xanga or studying/homework.
The only tim get competitive is when we are losing so badly on a soccer tournament, then I get
    fierce. I’m a loser :p

  • perfect dark

  • haha thats funny, I LOVE laser tag too! well i dont play sports as much as i want to anymore. But i would say i like playing darts and i can get competitive when i play that.

  • Ummmm…. Monopoly.

  • i really don’t have a game that brings out any competitive side of me. i like playing for the fun stuff that comes about in games. the laughter and the follies that people will say and do during them. my brother though he had a hard time loosing when he would play games. i remember one time we were playing monopoly during a thunderstorm. all the lights in the house went out and it was the only thing we could do as a family. we all got involved even mom and dad. i even “looked the other way” when he landed on my hotels on boardwalk and parkplace so that the game would continue.

  • hockey, lacrosse, soccer, and halo.
    peace max

  • Settlers of Catan.

  • definitely monopoly.

  • youre a jerk
    peace max

  • Does  Keyboard-typing  count?  I’m not  into  sports…  I’m  a  sad,  sad  person…  *nerd*

  • I am extremely competitive so every game brings out that side of me. Scrabble in particular though, I didn’t get the title “Queen of Scrabble” from everyone I know for nothing.

  • The game of life. Serious. I always feel the need to be more intelligent/funny/good-looking/well-dressed/music-savvy than everyone else. Ha, not to say that I ever win.

  • Poor kid, hope you bought him extra candy or something afterwards!

    Tim

  • I grow extremely competitive in softball. Since I’m the catcher, I call plays and sometimes can psyche out the batter by yelling things to the infield. I always grow really competitive when I bat and steal bases, and I get almost overwhelmed with adrenaline.

  • this post makes me laugh!  okay…the post-pinata-candy grab.

  • Clue…I am tough to beat!

  • Paint ball. I imagine this would be similar to your lazer tag experience. I’m really good, too. Well, probably not as maneuverable in my current state as I once was, but I’m surprisingly accurate.

  • I play cards a lot with Nick and when we are in Iowa, his family too.  I have to win at Hearts!!!

  • losing weight on a bet “the biggest loser” before thanksgiving i lost 35 lbs and won money from 4 other competitors  after xmas i realized that its the only way to get the other 30 off so i’m doing it again with one of the losers she’s such a good sport ; )

  • Music stuff I get competitive over. Just my nature.

  • Badminton.

  • ha ha, i played lazer tag, too, today! .. but i’m say ERS (egyptian rat screw).. it’s a card game, and i can get pretty violent sometimes, lol.. i also yell alot when i play

  • Monopoly.

    It gets kind of vicious.

  • POKER!! and ARGUING!!

  • Uh…. O_O

    ISKETCH THE WEBSITE.

  • Everything!!! I play to win too and so does my husband, so it can make things alittle interesting sometimes b/c someone has to lose!!! haha

  • Anything that has winner/loser tag on it hehe.

  • the list of games my dad and i are not allowed to play together is a long one. it includes hockey (ice and street), soccer, tackle (yeah coz that’s SUCH a great game to play with someone who outweighs you by 200 lbs.) any and all types of drinking games, poker, crib, chess, battle ship, baseball (well, you know. catch and throw) among others, and recently frisbee was added to the list. i was tryin to outrun and outmanouver my dad in a game this september and broke my fucking leg. i wouldn’t have thrown myself for a fuckup if i’d been playin with anyone else, coz i don’t care that much about winnin out over anyone else. on boxing day, we decided to race eachother up a hill, and my dad ended up with a bloody nose and i got kicked in the shin (by accident) (?). so now racing is out, too. other than that i don’t think i’m all that competitive. either i’m good at what i do, or i’m not. i think my parent’s are pretty much the only people i have any burning desire to prove myelf too.

  • Table Tennis. I may be a girl, but I can outplay all the guys I know, and I play to win.

  • ps, yes you are a jerk, but a good one. a parent needs to know when NOT to let thier kid win, nah?

  • What kind of father are you, teaching your boys sportsmanship like that?    Sucker!

My husband’s family gets together and plays Crazy Bunco every Christmas instead of exchanging gifts.  I am not as competitive as I used to be, which is probably a healthy thing.  The Christmas Guy and I were engaged was my first exposure to their sweet, fluffy set of house rules.  I won’t bore you with the details, but it’s a total sham competition.  I almost throttled Great-grandma Barker when she swiped my gaily wrapped packaged and claimed it as her own at the last minute.

I don’t play Crazy Bunco anymore.  But I do enjoy watching the Bunco initiation bewilderment of the poor saps who have married into the family after me.

  • LMAO, the next Trump!!!

  • Any game really, especially when playing against my family members.

Not so much in the sports department since I’m not that good at at sport.

    Amanda

  • Wow, this just made me realize I’m not much of a player of games.  I’m not athletic.  My family never played games when I was a kid. I guess the game I play the most now that I have kids of my own is hide and seek, and I am pretty good.  The two year old almost never finds me.  It’s usually her incessant cries of “Maaamaaaa?  Where are youuuuuuu?” that end the game.

  • Uno! (and maybe paint ball if I can get the nerve to try it, heard it really hurts to get shot!)

  • Scrabble.

    I KILL at scrabble.

I don’t play games where you SHOOT people–that is so….Republican.

    Ha ha ha!!!

  • I can’t believe you made your little boy cry! I don’t blame the older one for shooting you in the back!

In my family we play both rummy and dominoes. It’s ruthless! We go for the jugular.

  • Most all games

  • Sad!  Your poor son!

And I don’t have an obvious competitive side…I just have a “Well I must win so I’ll cheat” side.  But I’m rather discreet.  I wouldn’t tell a little kid to buzz off or anything.

    Heh.  Your poor children.

  • Spin the bottle.

  • OH man, depends who I’m playing with…. BUt…Blackjack is a big one for me!

  • texas hold ‘em or tennis. That story is hilarious btw.

  • im normally not competitive at all. but soccer, i will PUSH you out of the way like a linebacker if i have to, to get the ball

  • basketball. definitely that or lazer tag

  • Probably RISK or paintball, but even in those games I’m not too competitive. Like queenie, I really don’t have a competitive side…

  • solitaire

  • I have to say, sir, I am honored by your comment

    -Chris

  • Starcraft.
    Quake III Arena.
    Paintball.
    Airsoft.
    Chess.

    I’m a nerd.

  • Wow Dan, not to be guilt tripping you but that sounds kinda mean.
Any Athletic or video Game brings out my competetive side I’ve toned it down in recent years tho

  • i love laser tag! let me see bowling..ahaha wisconsin sucks

  • i play basketball and have a passion for that but i’ve always lost but have learned to hate to lose…so if i lose then i get really mad but i’m a leader so i have a good attitude and hold my head up high!!!!!!!!!

  • soccer… and sparring… and… school?

  • same as you
    laser taggg

  • Pinball; only the Bally repair guy can beat me.

  • EVERYTHING.

I think that is one of my problems in life.

RYC:  I reported the girl’s site, but it has not been shut down.  The Xanga team did have the decency to shutdown the site of the 11 year old girl.  I can relate to some of the reasons that drive these girls (and boys) to act the way they do.  I just don’t get it.  It makes me so sad.

    Erika

  • ryc – haha but you always have an insightful question, no matter what!

  • I think all of the board and card games bring out my competitive side :)

  • Dating.

  • Haha… I don’t know. NO! Wait… Super Mario Brothers 3 on Nintendo (NES).

  • and train dominoes

  • monopoly or hockey

  • Scrabble, or other word games, trivia games.

  • When my sons were little …and even through the teen age years we would play laser tag.  I later found out they all wanted me to come along because I was an easy score for them.  heh.

I’m competitive in every game I play, or I don’t play.  I think this wore off onto my kids as well.

  • Dodgeball…….. I become so girly and so angry…. I bite my lips to control hitting the opponent to death…..

Badminton is another one…… I call my teammate names like “retard” and “fatty” it gets so crazy….. I also hit the birdie really hard, like into the ceiling or across the gym.

  • How cool that you can all go do that together!

Hmm… a game that brings out my competitive side is… the game of love.  J/k.  well, maybe not.  But um… soccer.  And hockey.  I get aggressive.  Which is funny because I’m really not athletic but I enjoy those two sports.

  • Hahhaha, great little fart. :) I’d say dodgeball!

  • I’m competitive with pretty much everything.  I compete with random people at the gym. I can’t get enough of drilling people to the ground on the treadmills and the track. I love being in an endurance class and watching them fall one by one. I push them harder and harder until they submit.

I feel satisfied when I see someone leave the class because they can’t handle it. It just means I’m stronger.

But at times, I get beat by someone. But that just means I’ll work even harder to get to the next leve.

    BRING IT!

  • pool… doesn’t matter what game… I’m in it to win it… and I especially hate people that claim to know the game but don’t know the rules (APA) and make up some bullshit rules like you have to call all kisses or caroms or else it’s considered “slop.” Those people are beneath me and doesn’t derserve my attention at the table….

  • I can believe your son shot you in the back. I’ve lived through teens!

“Wack- A-Mole.” I kick butt in that and play to win.

    ((( GRANDMA HUGS )))

    Lori

  • video games… like unreal tournament and counterstrike and halflife and team fortress classic.

  • Monopoly.   I just love the thrill of pure capitalism.

  • Playing cards has become a big thing in my family now..we all get super competitive about it. Makes family gatherings waaaaaay more interesting now.

I love how you called your son a little fart hahahhahaha. Sounds like something my dad would say.

  • Paintball, frisbee and skydiving

  • Virtually anything, unfortunately.

  • Track is my big one..but…okay, this one is childish…Hide n’ seek.

    Eva.

  • Haha poor little one .. I hope you bought him an icecream afterward or something =P
Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. I’m in a trance when I play, and I hate losing. I even got my boyfriend to buy it over the summer and play with me, but he got all sad because I always beat him and get mad if we lose a team game. Video games in general, it’s such a blow to your ego if you lose

  • volleyball. thats my passion sport thing haha. but in other games that i can at least somewhat play and understand, i usually play to win.

  • Articulate, the game where you have to describe the word on the card for the others to guess. Plus any game against my brother

  • Trivial Pursuit.  I’m kind of a know-it-all and I play to win.  I would be competitive at scrabble, but it irritates me too much when another competitive person is playing and takes 5 minutes to find a stupid 5 letter word.  Most other games, I can play for the pleasure of competitition and conversation, and can lose gracefully.

  • The competitive spirit leads to all kinds of unGodly behavior.

    L,r

  • Marriage? …but then thats not really a game is it?  Oh well, now you see why we have issues.

  • im too competitive for my own good, sooo:

soccer, horse shows, video games, board games, hide and seek, capture the flag, high school GPA rank, ALWAYS FIRST TO FINISH A TEST, just about anything that involves beating someone else

  • soccer, or fencing. (sports, I know but still games)

  • Monopoly and Super Smash Bros. Melee both tend to make me competative.  I dislike it, but it does.  I usually want to just have fun, but that never lasts.

  • That was mean, you should have helped your youngest son.

  • Here’s a better question: name a game that doesn’t bring out my competitive side.

  • It sounds funny but I won’t let people lose to me at Yahtzee…>.>”  I always win that stinking game.

  • hm…im competitive when i act if that makes sense,

i mean, seeing as i am not competitive in sports or games.

but when i act, i try to be better then my drama class mates or otheres auditioning.

    :)

  • a really close baseball game that i am playing in.

  • Probably Trivial Pursuit and video games.  Most other games I play for fun.

  • man i like your name!!

  • “a game”…? “a”…? um… i think i am competitive in nearly everything… if i lose, i lose; i dont necessarily play to win cause i know i will lose in a lot… but wow do i turn nearly everything into a competition… i think i might rather lose than not win or lose cause it was “just a game.” my record speaks for itself, 100 to 10 billion. i’m gaining…  =o)

  • Watching my 8 yr old play soccer.
    Card games with the hubby.

  • Euchre!!! I play to Win!!!
