  • New Year’s Resolutions Part 2

I have mentioned that I cannot even remember what my New Year’s resolutions were last year.  I don’t think I even made any.  I tend to set goals but I just don’t typically think of them as New Year’s resolutions.  This is the time of the year where we have set goals for the next year.  In a post recently I had us write down New Year’s resolutions that we really didn’t expect to achieve.

I want to focus on how I go about setting goals.  To begin with, my goals all  must be simple to understand.  I can usually communicate my goals in seconds.  If I can’t understand my goals, no one else can.

I also have this little pattern that I follow that has worked for me.  I tend to set my goals by multiplying the existing goal by ten.  For example, say your company puts out 1000 widgets a year.  I would multiply the goal times 10 and set the goal at 10,000 widgets.  It pushes a person to think in new ways.  It is not realistic to multiply your whole business by 10 during the next year.  So instead look around your areas of responsibility and see if one little part can be multiplied by 10.  Multiplying one little area of your work place by 10 will make you look like a genius even if it is a very small area.  I have used this pattern to get promotions.

In my current job, I wanted to see some success when I started working here.  I knew I could not increase my main responsibility times 10.  It wouldn’t be practical.  It was way to large.  But there was one part of my work that usually had about 1 or 2 units involved.  I decided to multiply it times ten and set my goal at 20 units.  It worked.  Everyone in the organization noticed it.  I think it was the biggest reason I got my raise this year.  Realize it was only one part of my job.  In fact it was a simple part of my job.  But because it was smaller and more mobile, it could grow in a way that the bigger item couldn’t grow.

I rarely announce goals in advance.  I just go after them.  I tell friends my goals but I don’t tell anyone from work.  This way I am held accountable but I don’t suffer from high expectation from my work.  There are those who will tell you to tell people goals at your work.  I disagree.  Say you decided to multiply the area we are talking about by 10.  Say you only multiply it by 7.  People will see it as a failure instead.  If you have just told your friends, you have not suffered to high expectations.  If you told your people from work, you have failed in their eyes.

I also write my goals down in a place I can see every day.  I am the type of person that likes to see my goals in front of me everyday.  I have set a goal for my big area of responsibility this year.  I am trying to increase that area by 20%.  That is a huge jump.  When talking to my coworkers, I have set a goal in front of them at about 8% increase.  So I have set my personal goal much higher.  But I have communicated a smaller goal to the people that are around me.

I apply this principle to every area of my life.  I do it with my retirement account.  Take what you think people are saying you need for retirement and multiply it by ten.  How do you get there?  It is easier than you think.  Take your raise this year.  Say it is 3%.  Take the whole raise and throw it into your retirement fund.  Your company probably has matching funds up to a certain amount.  If you do this for a few years straight, your retirement plan will explode.  You will be surprised at how fast it can grow.  Say you place your raise into your retirement for the next three years.  Chances are you will be putting over 10% in your retirement by the end of that period.  If your company has matching funds, you may be somewhere around 15%.

If you are already putting 10% in your retirement fund, set a goal at 20%.  There are caps on retirement funds but most people can put it in for their spouse.  In fact, it is a good idea to talk your spouse into increasing their account at the same time.  If you both increase over the next few years, you will see a huge increase.  Most companies will take the money directly out of your paycheck and place it into your retirement fund.  So you will never miss it.  The raise won’t make much difference in how much you have in your paycheck.

All of the goals I am talking about our achievable.  You set small goals to increase over time.  I have found that most people make a mistake in making goals.  They set goals that are not realistic.  So they give up.  By taking on a small goal we can achieve the desired destination.

What simple goal would you like to set for yourself this year?

  • Hmmm….a goal…

I would say my goal is to be closer to my family

  • I want to be a nicer, more caring person in general. I learned how not to be this past year, and it really bothers me that I can be so apathetic.

  • to beat last years times in my triathlons.

  • Eat healthier and read more.

  • wohoo fifth.

    work harder :]

practice, win the new york piano competition by stecher and horowitz

  • better health and fitness… and to become a superstah!

  • I’d like to dance a little harder, sweat more, and actually put my heart into.

Secondly, I’d like to save more money, but I doubt that’ll happen with the dance expenses.

  • get good grades.  u_u

  • i’m going to have to really think that one over
    great stuff

  • Hmmmm…  Maybe I could multiply my daily xanga entries by 10….

Just kidding! (and thank goodness, you are most likely thinking)

I haven’t considered goals recently….  I must make some time to think on it….

  • I would like to lose 30 pounds. Multiplied x 10 = 300 pounds . Ha

  • I want to be just like you, Dan. Well, a female version…

  • Pleasure myself more often.

  • I’m going to lose 20 pounds.   I started today by renewing my membership to the gym.  I guess it took looking at my Christmas pictures to see for myself what I need to do.  I don’t think I will be able to multiply my 20 pounds by 10 though …that would be ….bad.        I’m still writing up my goals for next year.  I’ll post them on my site on New Years….I like to announce mine so it helps hold me accountable.

  • Oh dear, at my age you have waaay too many goals. Not that I’ve ever reached one. I think for this new year I want to work harder and maybe get involved in a relationship.

  • Read the entire Bible straight through.  And grow closer to God.

    Summer

  • i want to read my bible every day.

  • Finishing my feature-length novel, all editted and everything!

  • I haven’t the slightest clue.

The thing I need to do scares me b/c I refuse to get fat.  The thing I want to do scares me because I know that I do not need to lose weight.  My goal is to finish my Ph.D. and go from there.  I can’t make any other promises b/c I know that I won’t keep them.

  • Ehhh…too early for math.

My goal?  I would like to read more.

  • My friend (at school) and I have decided to set a goal together–to stop drinking pop and work out at least 4 days out of the week. This way we will both be held accountable to the other person. I think I have my friend at home wanting to do it also…which is good for me because I will be held accountable in every place I live.

I think that I’m going to set another goal for myself to save more money. I’m not in debt, nor do I have a lack of cash…but I would like to start saving money for a rainy day…we’ll see how it goes. I would also like to read my bible more…and spend more time with God…

  • Oh yes, I need to save a lot of money for my coming trip to Rome. Halfway there! (Wow it’s been two minutes since my previous comment and you’ve already had another two posts!)

  • It’s great to set goals about winning competitions and at events, but I like how you pointed out the importance in setting smaller goals on how you will acheive victory, such as setting up a strategy for practice or study.  I’ve recently discovered the same thing.

I plan to grow closer to God this year by finishing at least a complete read-through of the New Testament by May 1 and then continuing my studies throughout the year.

  • More like 5. This is amazing!

  • I’m gunna try’n stay in shape, and to do my devotional everyday.

And would you pray for me i’m really worrying to much about finding a college.

  • Two things.

    1. Run the Lasalle Bank Chicago Marathon.

    2. Have six pack abs

Wow…your’e hyper goal oriented. I thought I was bad!

  • simple goal: excercise more!! but why is that soooo hard!!

  • RYC:  I agree about the picture taking during the holiay season.  I kept saying to my family:  “Why didn’t you tell me I was gaining weight??”  They all just looked at each other and shook their heads.

  • I think everything you’ve said here was very good. I have never been good at goals though mostly cause i eigther don’t care enough to complete whatever it is or i forget it and never come back. The only time i ever completed any goals was while i was in therapy. they made us come up with 10 goals a week then one major one a month and then long term goals. i only remmeber one and it was stupid now that i think back on it but it was a major deal then.

  • My goals for 2006:::

to be less stubborn and arguementative w/ family and boyfriend.

to stablize my carreer and or school. At least, decide what I’m going to do indefinitely. Either pursue a law degree or continue with the health professions.

  • make Mike fall madly in love with me

  • you are one smart man Dan. :) i admire people who are able to set goals and reach them.

there are lots of goals that i should be setting for myself these days… but i’m bad at reaching them cuz… well…i’m lazy! :P anyway, i’ll tell you that i should be improving my chinese. maybe i should be memorizing ten new words a day :) i’ll let you know how it goes! hehe

  • Um…a goal?!?!?hehe…Have a nice day : )

  • Wow, I like the way you think.

I’m going to sleep earlier, therefore waking up earlier. In the morning I plan to do push-ups and crunches, eat breakfast (which I usually skip) and try to be active overall in the day. I did this for a few weeks last summer and I always felt great, but my routine was shot once the school year started. However, I plan to pick it up again.

  • I want to see my family more, as well as save some money for school. :)

Great post, Dan. Have a wonderful day!!

    ~Crystal~

  • To get to a decent level in Italian (and be first here again sometime, lol)

  • I would like to stop worrying about everything and just be happy.

I would like to lose 40 lbs.

I would also like to achieve fluency in Portuguese, Japanese ,and French.

I would like to be able to write to my family back home and speak with everyone else in Arabic.

  • Be happy with myself.

  • Well, I would like to lose 40 lbs, or maybe 20 lbs….

And definatley become fluent in Japanese.

But what is the point of a resolution if you can easily break it.

Well, I am committed to my Japanese studies but weight, that is a different and bigger struggle, so I say hell:

My new year’s resolution is to have no new year’s resolution!!!

  • Steal your retirement fund?

I need to lose weight.  If I lose weight, I am sure a lot of my health issues will simply disappear.  My diabetes might even go away.  For sure my energy would increase and I would feel like doing more of the things I like to do.  I might accidentally attract a female again, but that isn’t necessarily a goal.  I could buy decent clothes without worrying about whether I would gain enough weight to have to get rid of them and buy more sweats.  I would be able to withstand the summer heat so much better!  I would be more comfortable all the time.

I weighed about 120 when I joined the AF in 1974.  I got back down to 150 back in 1993.  I am about 240 now.  I need to get down to between 160 and 180 at least.

Thanks for asking.  What about you?

    L,r

  • Well, going on the 10x bit, I could lose 10x as much as I gained, which would be 6 x 10 = 60 lbs.

Since I started on Xanga this last month, I could get 10 times the comments, which would be 3 x 10 = 30.

Pushups and situps would go to 10 x 10 = 100 per day.

I’ll have to try that 10x at work.  Kinda hard when working for the government :)

  • I currently max out the amount I can put in to my 401K. I think its $14K per year right now. I did this the moment I got my new job (about 1 year ago) because I knew I wouldn’t miss it since I got a higher salary with the new job.

    My goals:
    - Save money, spend less
    - Go to church (I found one I like going to)
    - Sleep more (7-8 hours/day)
    - Learn to play guitar like John Mayer

  • 1) eat better

    2) feel more religious/closer to God by Easter.

  • RYC: thts way beyond picking on. i may be w hiny but when someone starts looking up your criminal history online, and posting it in their weblog, thats stlking. psycho. people.

i dont believe in resolutions. no one ever keeps them

  • memorizing 52 bible verses in Chinese.

  • get really really strong

  • stop being the family dissapointment.

  • LOL.. make my bed every day

  • i would love to take a break last year was INSANE for me

  • I’d like to get more exercise and back into nature. Maybe I will run on the road 5 times a week.  This way I get to exercise and at the same be with nature.

  • Last year I said I would write my thesis.  I DID IT.  This year, I am going to move and maintain my new residence.  I am also not going to be moved to another school this fall.  These are my goals.  Happy new year, Dan!

  • Nice xanga!
    Random Props

  • * More assets then liabilities!

ryc: you’re a hoot! actually he is known as Pappa Mac Daddy!

  • I have no idea how you get some many comments. I am excited to get 50, but then I feel obligated to RYC: them all which is time consuming. what do you do about getting abck to all those people, or do you not? And don’t they expect you to comment back? I know that was not your question, but I am really curious.

  • I will be debt free.  Really.

  • To accomplish several Scripture memorization marks (4-5 books)

  • I would really like to try to lose weight, get some exercise and try to eat healthier … less carbs, less sugar.  I’m a pre-diabetic and I have to be extra careful so that I don’t become a full-fledged diabetic … But, this is all easier said than done for me … my weakness is junk food and being a couch potatoe!!

  • to continue being a nice person.

  • save more money and lose some weight

  • Reading through the Bible in a year.

  • RYC about the featured content:  I don’t think I’ve seen your posts about it before.  I haven’t been reading your site for very long.  I might have to scroll to other posts and see if I can find it.  It’s great that you’re going to do a series on it.

  • To use my money wisely and put more aside toward savings. And to work on babysitting more.

  • Goals are better than resoultions.

More God time is on my list .

    ((( GRANDMA HUGS )))

    Lori

  • Well my goal is to lose 40lbs. Should I shoot for 400 then? hehe

  • I can’t find a word to mean more than Thank you! Yes! Making a simple goal and adding more % on it by times! I was always making those big one and then I found that I can’t do it so quick…

My goal for the year: I want to finish my Japanese Tutor book3-4.

  • going disc brakes on my mountain bike. i am half way there.

  • RYC:  You asked if I minded if you mentioned and linked me in your prayer blog.  That would be just fine.  God bless you today.

  • RYC:

“Maybe you can discuss it with the IT guy.”

One of them actually showed up an hour or so ago and performance has improved considerably.  They just had everything on autopilot.

    Take care, Dan.

  • My goal is to make all dreams possible in life for me and to help the dreams come true of others close to me. I like the way you think.

  • Very interesting strategy.  I will have to see how to apply it to my work!  =)

    I don’t do New Year’s resolutions.  I didn’t last year, and I won’t this year.

  • Wow,

New Years Resolution:   second to winning the second losing weight challenge with a coworker (I won the first), is to come back when I have more time to read what you wrote here    I do best when I have a plan laid out and this information could help me get some new plans started.  Hmmmm   There are sales quotas where I work  Hmmmm  think I can become top seller?

  • weight loss that lasts

  • save money..hard to though since i don’t have a job currently..

  • So many come to mind for me right now. To get along better with my mother, Lose a few pounds, and further my writing skills. Do those really count as simple? I think not. I really suck at that simple stuff ;)

  • My goal is to stop spending so much money… I have a shopping addiction.

  • Exercise 3x per week!  (wife says I must!)

    Tim

  • To get people to stop putting an e at the end of the word potato.

  • I am going to try that multiplying everything by 10 rule.
That is a good one. :)

Resolution: try to spend less money on frivolous things. It grows . . .

  • Hmmm…I was hoping to learn to play the guitar I got LAST year for Christmas.  Does that mean I have to buy 9 more and play all ten???

  • ATTENTION TO PEOPLE TRYING TO LOSE WEIGHT.

I am one of those people who lost 50 pounds in less than a year. You’re probably wanting to ask “How did you do it?”. The formula is super simple. It’s the will power and drive to do it  that makes it difficult.

    Here’s my secret.

    1. I joined Weight Watchers Online (I never went to one meeting)

    2. I tracked my daily points (Which is basically how many calories you take in vs. the number of calories you burn). WW makes it very easy to do. Like retardedly easy.

    3. Excercised on a daily basis.

Eight months later I was fifty pounds lighter. Two months after that, I ran my first half marathon. Next year, I’ll be running my first full marathon. In the mean time, I’m in the best shape of my life. I work out every day, eayt super healthy, and my mind and body thank me for it.

    Good Luck!

  • Try to be more accepting (of myself too).

  • to exercise and eat healthier

  • Bleh… I need to bring my GPA up to a 3.0 if I wanna get into anyone’s graduate school…

  • stop biting my nails!

  • My goal is to like who I see in tme mirror. Taking virtual ego beatings throughout the year can take it’s toll on people — but I need to find the strength to overcome all of that and enjoy being myself, regardless of the consequences. :)

  • finally finish bertran russell’s history of western philosophy

  • no matter how simplee it is… you are gonna forget ur resolution about half way in the year
and then u try to remember ur resolution the next year
Its a good thing to not have one =]
A lot of people get carried away the first few months if you have a resolution.

  • simple…maybe silly..but I’m gonna drink a lot of water…I want to be healthier, I want to loose a little weight..but setting those as goals gets overwhelming—doing something manageable..that is related I think is a really good jumping off point

  • I like ChristianFrenzys idea….weight loss that lasts!!!  I was thinking about that on the way to the gym today.  It’s easy to say I’m going to lose 20 pounds.  I can do that by March….but the REAL test is…what will I weigh Next December???  hmmmm

  • I’d like to quit smoking and lose some weight. I’m weaning myself off cigs now. I’ll probably start walking soon. And I want to find myself again.

  • I resolve to police the language of retailers at the checkout counter (“merry christmas!”), enforce religion upon other people’s children in public schools, and continue to support and enable torture throughout the world.

  • I want to run a 10 mile race. I started about a year ago barely able to run a mile and now I can run 6 miles and do run 4 miles routinely.

  • To get back into therapy.

  • Stop procrastinating.

  • I want to lose at least 50 lbs. in 2006. Since I spent this year changing the way I eat and have been able to lose a little and keep it off, I’m hoping that I can keep going and do even better.

  • to be happy and not let sad moments bring me down

  • it took you 9 paragraphs (albeit small) to ask that question? get my husband to come home from work earlier…hahahaha…

  • To be a good mama.

  • I wanna have a baggin body by this summer. We have a gym/weight room at work. I am going to start a program with one of my coworkers … he has gladly offered to partner with me … he runs the gym in the evening.

  • this is something i need help with, dan.  you said “if i don’t understand my goals, no one else will.”  i can’t seem to nail mine down to specifics.  i want to be free from overeating.  and i want to keep my house neater.  generally, i just want to have more self-discipline and DO what i need to do when it needs to be done.  isn’t that a vague goal?

  • Well, you know what they say: Understate, overperform.

my simple goal: to hand in 5x as many hw assingments as i did last semester.

  • to get straight a’s on a report card
&& other stuff that i wont write here

  • make friends.  But that’s not really that simple…

  • Be a better friend.

  • Read and get my work done before 10:00.

  • See my site, I’ve got six.

Simple… eh… meybe not so simple. Oh well.

  • Start a personal training session for bojutsu sometime later next year.

Earlier I’d like to concentrate on keeping my room clean and keeping on top of my schoolwork.

  • Lose weight.  I want to get below 100 pounds definitely!!!!

  • I think I want to lose the pounds I gained during the holidays and vacation..  LOL… I don’t like the number that the scale says.

  • I want to learn to be a more understanding person. I have a tendency to not think about how others would feel in a certain situation.
