Xanga Ignorance
I have to be the most xanga ignorant person on here. I can never figure out anything. People come to my site all the time and ask me how to do this and that. I just don’t know the answer to their question. I was on xanga for about 6 months before I learned to link a site. I was on xanga for a few months after that before I learned how to link a site and yet type in a nice little word instead of having the whole link show up.
I never mess with the layouts. I know it would take me forever to get it looking right. I also took forever to put my pics up the first time I tried it. The second time it took me a long time too. Xanga is too complicated for a guy like me. I can’t use barely any of the functions. After being on xanga several months, someone informed me that there was a spell check function. I could have used that information early in my xanga life. The only thing I know how to do on xanga is update and I do that often.

You don’t need to make them though, someone else can make it for you and all you have to do is paste it in your look and feel.

I get layouts, although I don’t mess with mine. I get linking, which I do extensively. I got color and font changes before all you had to do was press a button to change them, although I don’t change mine much. The one thing it’s taken me FOREVER to figure out is how to add smileys in comments. I’ve figured out

If anything, I am ignorant about how to use xanga skins. I know how to do most everything else though.

RYC: Well, if I was to go searching for the answers, you would be the first person I’d ask.
Oh, there are many ways in which I’m ignorant, but I learned a lot about html from trying to make my site my own and unlike anyone else’s. One way I’m ignorant in which I need guidance at the moment is how to deal with a cut/paste comment from someone who didn’t even bother to read the post, or if the person did read, didn’t customize the cut/paste comment to personalize it a bit. I hate spam comments, even if it is about Christian doctrine.
RYC I enjoy getting gifts too. I’m not against giving or receiving gifts given in love any day of the year. But if it’s done out of a feeling of obligation, that kinda spoils the gesture. Would it still freak you out if you previously exchanged numbers with the person who called? Or would you never exchange numbers? I would only be freaked out if someone looked me up to call me even though I didn’t give my number out.

I have some computer/coding knowledge, but usually just poke around until I figure things out. My latest quest, though, is to fix the transparency code so that it your pictures can stay normal…instead of transparent.
totally on the layouts and skins, but I’m not too into it, so whatever. MY words are what I am here for, and I have little problem with that.

I don’t know how to change my layout much. But then, some of the layouts I’ve seen that ARE changed are pretty hard to view…busy background images, tiny fonts and color schemes that make it difficult to read. I think if I want to encourage people to visit, I should make it as ‘reader-friendly’ as possible.
Oh, and what is up with the ‘reviews’ and ‘events’ we have at the top of our pages??? Does anyone use those?

Pictures. I don’t really get how how to put pictures on my site. Almost every picture I try to put on there I am told that it is too big. Then if by chance I DO get a pic on there, it’s the size of a wallet picture. How do I get this to work better? I would love any help I could get.

I don’t bother with most of the bells and whistles. So I can claim near-universal ignorance. Anything that doesn’t help me to get my thoughts down or help me convey those thoughts to my readers is a waste of time and processor cycles – IMHO.
A lot of the extras aren’t available unless you have premium.

Wow… I’m pretty good with most things, but I guess I’m bad with javascript stuff. And I can’t create my own HTML codes, but I can edit them pretty well.
Can’t do music or javascript. What’s worse, I can’t pick out a set of colors for my xanga that looks halfway decent. When I try, my eyes hurt.

I’m one of those who, when I get something new, always presses all the buttons to find out what they do instead of reading the book/FAQ. So I know how to do everything I would want.
I’m very ignorant. I don’t get backgrounds, people have such cool ones but I don’t know how to do it, so I’ll stick to solid colors. Basically I’m with you, I just learned to link not that long ago and that’s about as far as it goes with me…

uploading pics, apparantly. I have some on disc…i’ve uploaded from disc before but this time it’s taking too long and i can’t seem to email them out either! it freezes up my comp. so i copied them to my pictures file on the pc and still they won’t upload. so i tried to copy and paste and no luck.

xanga has spell check? How exciting! Yeah, the thing is, I am a web developer, its what I went to school for and what I do for a living but when it comes to xanga I never even bother to even see what features are available…I just use my canned layout and let it be.
Hey, I don’t feel so ignorant now. I’m not the only one that has had to muddle through trying to figure out all this xanga stuff to make my site look cool. Guess it doesn’t much matter as I don’t get much traffic anyway… I’m still trying to get cool music to work. I had it once, but my hard drive crashed and I’m just barely getting somewhat back to “normal.”
In all the places you mentioned. I learned how to link the site and type in a nice little word at they same time you did. Hazmat_Lounge posted you directions and I followed her directions. I think I have a handle on pictures, but just don’t have the time to mess with them on a regular basis (though lack of a digital camera also prohibits this). I know there is written information on how to do things, but I am a visual learner. I need to see it done. I have seen some fabulous sites, but am okay with knowing that mine will probably never be one of those.
When I messed with the javascript and end up messing up the entries.

I’mlucky. I have kids who are pretty Xanga savvy. If I don’t know how to do something, I just ask one of them. I don’t particularly like the layouts because the text box is too narrow for my taste. So I will just continue to find cool pictures and do it all myself. I have it for the most part figured out. For whatever I need to do anyway. I don’t feel the need to get technical!

How you were struggling with the links is where I am so struggling at. I need the “links for dummies” book! Hahaha!
Definitely photo and music uploading, although this may be a good thing, as sites with photos and music take forever to load on my dial-up connection, and I wouldn’t want to put anyone else through that, but if I knew how to, I wouldn’t be able to resist. Sometimes it is better not to know than to know.
I can’t figure out how to rename a link.
I just figure that I know enough to make it look okay, so that’s all I want to know. Hey, I was just reading Christianity Today, and there were some pictures of CS Lewis in there. They looked quite similar to your profile pic. I can’t remember if you told me that your pic was CS Lewis or not, but I figured you out!
I didn’t know there was a spell check option. Maybe you can tell us how to use it in your next post. I am most ignorant of HTML code stuff. The best I have been able to do is cut and paste other people’s HTML code into my site. I have also, on occasion, begged some of my subs to tell me how to write a particular line. I bet it would help if I bought a book on HTML.
I can usually figure out what I need to do…what I’m ignorant about is the way teenagers act on Xanga. They really think they know it all and I guess I must not know anything.

Not to sound full of myself, but well, I’m not very xanga ignorant…I’m pretty sure I know how to do everything…I can put videos, pictures, html stuff on…I can do layouts…it took me awhile to figure it all out though, and I’ve been on xanga for a little over three years now

My ignorance on xanga would have to do with the whole featured content thing. How do you get featured? Not that I want random people coming by and commenting and such, but I’m just curious.

I’d like to play music on my site, and I’d like to give fun names to the comment and eprop buttons. I can’t figure out either of those.
After about a year, I have finally learned how to make my own layouts. And it’s somewhat annoying that it took me that long, but they’re beautiful and I’m glad because it’s a mark of my originality. No one else will have my xanga layout. Yup.
Oh.. and for being ignorant.. I don’t do that private or protected post business much. I don’t really understand why I would ever use it.
I still don’t know how to link a person’s site … I thought I knew how to do it, but it never worked for me. I always need my kids to help me. I am proud of myself, however … I finally figured out how to scan and upload pictures onto my site!! My kids showed me a billion times and I finally was able to do it all by myself without their help!! But, there is soooo much more I don’t know how to do. I didn’t even set up my own site … I wouldn’t have a clue how to do that!! I’m lucky I even know how to leave comments on people’s sites!!

Java and Links.
I want to put something in the right-hand column of my blog but because I don’t know Java I can’t do it. I can’t even copy and paste anything in there and make it work.
I can’t figure out who to put links in the weblog entry using what Xanga offers. To put a link in an entry I have to paste the link into a word document and edit the hyper link …then copy that and paste into the weblog entry.
Getting people to comment on the entries which are most important to me.

Javascript and The music cice you use in Look & Feel so when people come to the site, they can hear music in the background.
Not quite sure — but once I discovered blogrings and how Xanga sites could have such elaborate but beautiful layouts, I went into a chase trying to figure out how. And I ended up at createblog.com and used previous HTML knowledge to figure out things.
Now I make my own layouts. (Not currently, though; sticking to the basic format!) :D Whoo for improvement.
I am “my space” ignorant which is why I use xanga, lol!!! I would use my space, but they don’t tell you how do stuff like xanga does, they tell you to ask ppl, but if you don’t know anyone, who are you going to ask?

I know a lot of aspects on Xanga, the pictures, HTML, skins, the word links, and whatnot, but it took me so long to figure out the more efficient way to privatize entries. Instead of manually going in and checking off “private” while editing the entry one can just click “public” and it changes to private!
I’m still learning little neat tricks like that, but nothing like spell check. I have to admit, spell check has always been my best friend.
I’m still trying to figure out how to get a counter working. I tried the 2 mentioned last night at Ma’s party, but I couldn’t even find the right pages.
