  • North Carolina Driving

I drove today from Illinois to North Carolina.  I am in staying in Asheville, North Carolina this week.  I was only 26 miles from reaching my destination and I drove right by a cop.  He jumped out of the road after me.  I didn’t know what speed I was driving but I knew I was way over.

He pulled me over and asked me if I knew how fast I was driving.  I am wondering if anyone has ever answered that question.  Why admit guilt?  So he told me I was driving 80 in a 60.  I thought they just gave you a 20 mph buffer zone.  I got a ticket.

The fastest I ever drove a car was when I was in high school.  I had the car floored with a max speed of 85.  I am sure I was going over 100.  The car was shaking I was going so fast.  I got home on time.  I did run over a little rabbit though.

What is the fastest speed you have ever driven a car?

  • About 105 in a 79 LTD.

  • 85-90
    What a rebel, I know.

  • 90. I know. pansy from texas. top ten? Possibly second! =)

  • Asheville, NC is one of my favorite cities in the world.

    I think I’m about 105.

  • About 120mph in my gramma’s late 1980′s Chrysler LeBaron. My brother dared me to.

  • 70. I’m a goody-two-shoes…I dont like to go over the speed limit.

  • I’m not sure… but I too was in HS…. and stupid.  Probably 100 +.  Gotta make that curfew, ya know.

  • 90, while racing a Mommy Van. Good times in a small Kansas town.

  • a little over 100!

  • like…..2.5 miles an hour? i got to back my moms car up cause it was on the hose ><

  • ha i cant even drive by myself yet so only 70. geez. lame.

  • YOU RAN OVER THE RABBIT?! That hurts Dan, really hurts.

And I’m a speedlimiter, so 60 is my max. I think I did 62 once because my dad made me

  • 95 MPH on a little beat up 93 Corolla… thankfully, that is not my car anymore!

  • Well over 90, in a car we later realized had a bubble in the tire. Miracles do happen. We survived without a blowout!

  • I think about 105, I was late getting home…and at my house…1 minute late = 1 day grounded…needless to say, I made it home on time!

  • About 75, that’s because I was in a hurry.

  • 95, but it was on a highway.

  • I’m originally from NC, cops there are not cool.  But if you were 20 over, you deserve a ticket.  10 iver is the limit most of the time.  On the interstate, you might get away with 15.

I think so far, about 120.

  • 114, then I decided I wanted to see my GF more than speed.

  • Dude, I live in North Carolina! Come see me!

Just when riding around.. I floored a friends car and reached 109 MPH.

When street racing.. I got an old vehicle to 96 MPH

    Nicholas

  • I was not driving, but my sisters and I would coast down a huge hill outside our town…in a VW bug. Easily going 100+

  • 5000

  • 80…… my college bud got pulled over doing 112 on the freeway thru Nevada when I was the passenger tho……

  • 0 mph

    I am only 12

  • About 85….late for work, trying to pass someone, they decide to speed up….cars coming in other direction…..I might have hit 90 that day…..not really sure.

  • 85ish, I don’t really care to go above that, and I ususally drive that fast because I am late for work.. HAHA

  • You sacrificed a poor little innocent, furry, fuzzy bunny rabbit to abide curfew? Yes, I previously had a pet rabbit ;)
I’ll let you know when I get my license. Though…I don’t think I will leave myself open for a chance to LOSE that new license.

Have a good week in NC!

  • 130, but that’s kilometers. No idea what it is in miles. :o )

  • 110 in my dad’s Jetta on this straitaway on a Highway.

  • 95 following a Floridian on the interstate in KY. That’s where they fly.

  • 73!!!!!!!!!!

but i dont even my license yet… but i’ll be 16 in a month! WOOHOO!!

  • I had a 78 Plymouth Fury that had been a police car. I had the needle buried at 120!

  • Just got the learner’s permit.

  • A little over 120mph in my supercharged 91 VW Corrado. (Which is for sale, by the way. Anyone interested?)

  • 95, almost 100 if I’m racing a friend in their little four-cylinder cars (and because I love when my Alero runs down Cavaliers).

  • 70… I’m pretty boring.

  • 95ish. on a lil twisty back road. at night. with no drivers license and no insurance. and the road’s speed limit was 45.

  • I hit 85-90 and dropped back down.

  • PS i am a really really good driver.

  • Bill Clinton is going to suck your wife. Then she’s going to leave you for Barack Obama because he is sexier than you (and not asexual: AKA, when he reproduces he doesn’t do so by splitting himself in half and then growing a third nipple). Which, in comparison to you, makes him a 186,000 mi/s. AKA: The speed of light. Peace.

  • 120.

  • ive reached 120 and guesstimate 129 (on a car that only went up to 100 on the speedometer, it went past it).

buffer for cops is usually 5-10 mph…but even then its at their discretion

and when they ask you a question i admit it up front.  I say, yes officer i was going so and so speed and I know it was over the speed limit, but……..and you give your excuse.  (late for a wedding, a marathon, or whatever it is you are going to).

and the reason for admitting it is…the cop already knows what you did.  If you lie to them that will only infuiriate them.

Also by admitting it, it shows the cop that you are aware of the situation and surrounding, and that you weren’t just speeding wrecklessly.

    tickets suck

  • Car -125   Motorcycle – 145

    Gaurdian Angel – Priceless

  • Nah, they only give you 10mph, comfort zone, 15 max!!! Poor Bunny!!!  Somewhere between 105 & 110…. Big stretch of NOTHING between Lubbock, Tx. & Ruidoso, N.M.——  Used to make that drive frequently on my way to Grandma’s house…

  • i was an idiot one night and decided to race a guy on the highway. i think i hit 140. my impreza totally owned his lancer.

  • Nearly 130.

I did admit guilt on my only fast driving award. I knew I was going 70 in a 45. (25 over) The cop was actually quite impressed that I knew exactly what speed he had clocked me at.

I was still given a citation though. >=[

  • i’ve never driven a car :[ haha north carolina, represent! cept i moved so i cant exactly say that anymore…but yeah, nc cops tend to do that a LOT. they stop at random locations and the moment they catch you speeding, you get pulled over. and then they give you a ticket and then you usually have to go to court, meaning you get to the courthouse and they just make you pay the court fee and let you go. its stupid.

  • 70?

  • 96.573833939442108

  • 110.

  • Something like 120 on a small country road. With the top down. It was amazing/scary

  • 125 in my dad’s 1.8T Jetta

  • I’m not exactly sure, but the needle was buried in my ’86 Stang, and I had it red lined.  The speedometer went up to 85…I was told by a friend that I was probably doing 120 – 130 mph.

  • Okay, call me lame… but how can you post three times while driving to North Carolina in a day? That is a 13 hour trip!

  • Dan Man, come up with the most interesting topic you can.

    The ultimate topic.

    Do it,

    I have faith in you.

  • About 108.

Are you telling me the limit isn’t 70mph everywhere? Geeze, you guys.

  • somewhere around 97 mph…

And yeah, gotta watch out for those NC cops…  Remember, go to Apollo Flame Bistro on Brevard Rd.  I would recommend absolutely ANYTHING they have, but what I love is the greek salad and the greek spaghetti.  Their pizza is also really good…

  • 20 mph buffer?!?! geez! i never heard of anyone thinking it was that big of a buffer…
fastest for me was 106… i was young and wanted to break the 100 mark… and had a friends car to do it in… my own car back then (the first one), when i reached 85, it always started making sounds telling me that poor betsy was going to die if i continued on… it actually did stall on me like a dozen times literally… though of course twice of them i ran out of gas… so… i dont like getting gas unless i have to… twice i judged wrong…

  • Bunny killer….. I have only driven at about 98 but I have ridden at well over 120. To be fair the speed limit here is 70.

  • 20 over the speed limit is reckless. The fastest I’ve ever driven is 115 in my saturn station wagon. I wanted to see how fast I could get it to go.

  • um 85-90 in my car…it was shaking bad tho…it shakes at 70…lol

    Kelly

  • My car won’t break 85. I went 85 on the way to get my learner’s permit.

  • 965 mph. Yes. nine hundred sixty-five miles in one hour.

  • i killed a cat going 55 near home on the way to school in the dark…:(

  • haha.  like, 30.  I just got my permit.

  • 120 with the top down? Crazy! I’d probably admit how fast I was going, just because I think it’s morally right to admit it. But, if I were only in it for myself, I wouldn’t admit it, because then your admission can’t be used against you in court.

  • 965 eh? Fast car. Oh, and about the buffer. I always thought it was 5. Actually, I think I just read that PA’s official buffer is like 2.7. Most of the time I drive within 5 of the limit. I am very intentional about when I speed, and usually only do it on safe roads, both safe from hazards, and from police radar.

  • about 110 in my old 90 Acura Integra. I loved that car.

  • Have no idea what it is in Miles Per Hour….but I got one car up to 165 Kilometres an hour     Interesting post ’til the next

  • Maybe 70? Yeah I’m such a loser.

  • Dan – You naughty boy!!!!  I never thought you were the type to speed….hehe…I’m shocked!!

Where I live – they give you a 4 mile buffer zone…..I don’t speed now because I got tired of getting stopped……

    Candy

  • 85-95 mph tops and I only did it to see how fast I could go before I chickened out and that was it .. my car probably could’ve hit 130, but I knew I’d be so dead if I was caught

  • I think I hit 88 once…didn’t mean to though.  Normally I stay right at 10 over whatever the speed limit is

  • Yeah, heavyrevvy has a good question. I want to know too.

  • I’m ashamed to say, about 65. And I hated that. I’m not an elite driver, and going over 50 makes me somewhat nervous. Needless to say, I’ve never gotten at ticket.

I’m not too far from Springfield. It’s a swanky town at that , I’ve pondered moving there for a while someday. The Barnes & Noble keeps me coming back.

  • 110, I think. but in five years of driving alone, i’ve never gotten pulled over. lucky i guess.

  • Oh, and I’m a wuss.  I’ve probably ever only gone 90, probably by accident.

  • Um, I think the buffer’s only like 5 mph.  20′s a bit much.

My husband once made the drive from Seattle to Texas in 3 days.  He sped the whole time and only got a ticket in the last hours of his drive, as he entered a speed trap that suddenly dropped from 65 to 45 to 30 (and he was caught going 40-something).  He thought it was slightly ironic and if nothing else at least infuriating that he was almost home and then got caught and ticketed.

  • On a month-long tour of America… Kansas, I think, 115mph…1985 Maxima.  One of the best journeys of my life.

  • Hmmm in a car, 138 MPH

While racing at an ETR event, I ran 172MPH on my motorcycle.

  • 106, in a minivan with whose engine check light has been on for five years and has only half the brakes working (the front pair).

  • Probably close to 90 in my mom’s new car.

  • Well in a Jeep, 110.
    A car, 145.
My motorcycle (read: pride and joy), 155.

Yeah, I’m not doing that again any time soon.

  • about 90… Welcome to NC… the cops here suck for the most part!  Even though you are staying on the other side of the state! (I live near Greenville, NC about 5 hours east of Ashville) Aren’t the mountains beautiful up there?

  • about 110.  The most fun I had though was racing my ’71 road runner against a datsun b-210.  I had no passengers he had two.  we ran side by side at about 100 mph for a while.  He told me later that the car was never the same!

    Tim

  • Oh yeah… I rode in a friends Porsche as he raced a bike up to 180… then we left the bike like it was stopped. I think we hit 190 something.

  • in canadian speeds, close to 200km/hr to get to work on time…i ran nothing over butttt it was crazy snow (blowing, and coming off of cars infront of me) and it was my first time driving in the snow…a good experience i say, i ran over an ice patch too, that could’ve caused a lot of damage, i’m so lucky it didn’t =)

  • Poor bunny …

The fastest I ever went was 120 km/h which I think is about 80 mph.  Would have probably gone faster than that but I only have a learner’s permit which means a licensed driver has to sit in the passenger’s seat with me, and they were all kinda squeamish about me going too fast.  Hmm, wonder why… :P

  • Over a 100 in a 1955 Chevy when I was 17.

  • When I was a teenager I drove my ’69 Camaro to college (normally a 3 1/2 hour drive) at 100 miles an hour steady….knocked thirty minutes off the trip to make it a three hour trip.

Fastest I’ve gone in high school (amazing we didn’t get killed) car full of us high school kids right on the bumper of another car full of high school kids we knew, racing on the highway at 120 mph.  And a few times later in life with my hubby driving the car.  We drove 120 through that desolate stretch of highway leaving Vegas going to LA following a BMW which was also traveling at 120 plus.

  • about 100 or so.

BTW, if you head East on 40 for about an hour you’ll drive right past my Dad’s house (you can see if from the expressway)

  • 95 – 100. Ashville’s a nice town. make sure and go see the Biltmore Estate. It’s amazing.

  • 130.
my goal is to drive on the autobahn someday in my cougar.

  • 110. That was the highest number on the dial at the time.

  • I never have liked to drive fast so probably 70 in a 70mph zone, Judi

  • The line ended at 100

The spedometer said “park”… which I guess was 110…

  • 90 when I was driving.

  • OH probably 90

  • There’s this great little scene in the movie “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” where a Kentucky State Trooper pulls over John Candy and Steve Martin in a beat-up, burned-out Plymouth station wagon. The trooper walks up to the car and asks Candy “Do you have any idea how fast you were going?” The response:

“Well, we had a small fire last night. Our speedometer’s melted. So, it’s hard to say with any degree of accuracy exactly how fast we were going.”

    Classic!

I buried the speedometer on a Dodge Caravan while going down a mountain between Asheville and the Tennessee line. The max number was 95MPH, so – like John Candy said – “It’s hard to tell with any degree of accuracy exactly how fast I was going”.

  • 110 on the autobahn, our car has a governor on it so we can’t go any faster.

  • Surprise – you were in N. Carolina with out-of-state plates. Of COURSE you’re getting a ticket.

I’ve done 95 before – almost without realizing it.  I knew I was over the limit, but it was a beautiful day, yadda yadda… and I looked down…

  • A little over 100 driving into Houston, TX

  • I burried the needle in my old 66 Glaxie 500.   Somewhere over 110 MPH.     I was up to 85 MPH once on my bike.

  • The weekend of my graduation my brother lent me his Datsun 260. I hit 143. Never, ever again do I want to go that fast.

  • I can’t drive, but I’m sure I’ve gone over 100 with my brother.

  • 100ish… and welcome to my town! We’re not all bad… :)

  • Uh oh Dan!  Sorry to hear you got a ticket.  I would say the fastest I have driven would be 90-95.

  • 170 km/h in a Nissan Patrol. Equates to about 106 MPH.

  • 110mph in a 1977 VW Bug. It took the cooperation of the local law enforcement, and almost 15 miles of interstate.

Later, the engine blew (had to replace it), and the car shook after 85 pretty badly.  But we all laughed, including the officer’s who also wanted to know how fast it could go.  The humor was having a cop in front, and one behind me…

…a police escort for an old bug that had an 8 ft. CB antenna (looked like a giant RC car).

  • Be sure to go to the Native American restaurant in Asheville and get the sampler. You get rattlesnake, bison, and a few other delights that I’m sure you don’t see very often in IL.

  • Indicated 139 in a 1988 Firebird Formula.  It would get slightly airborne when passing through a dip.  I did 125 on a Yamaha 1100 once and it seemed like I was doing 200 or more.

I never killed no defenseless little critters though!  You beast!

Cops have been good to me here between Fort Worth and Weatherford (knock on wood).  I have done a steady 75 going home before.  It may be that they can’t believe that my old 1991 Cavalier beater will go that fast!

    L,r

  • My mustang caps off at 115…so I guess 115.  lol

  • i 145… electronically limited… go figure…

  • 125… i live in Germany… autobahn!!  My dad got his Mustang up to 143. :S. Glad i wasn’t there.

  • I have driven every vehicle Ive ever had as fast as it would go which is probably why my driving record is so bad…Oh and I drove a race car once…it soooo rocked!

  • i think 105, but i was in germany. so there were some people going faster than me

  • 80 possibly.  I’ve never gotten a ticket though.

  • Dan, you speed monkey!  (Somehow, I’m not surprised!) I had an old Firebird that I raced.  The speedo went to 140.  I got to 135 but the car started shaking so I backed off.  I think I splatted more than a few bugs on my windshield.

  • 85 on I95.

  • I drove one of the 2005 Mustangs when they first came out and got it up to about 125.  I’ve been on the back of a motorcycle going well over that, though and it was terrifying.

  • No eprops today.  I work in an emergency room and see dead kids every day because of speeding, so any post that even remotely glamourizes speeding is way off base IMHO.

  • I was really really really really really pissed at my gf one night. The area around me is being turned into strip mall heaven, but if you go back on Galloway Road far enough it’s all country roads.  I did 95 on galloway and jumped my car.  Then 100 on this stretch of Johnson Road. When I get mad it’s just like my right foot gets really heavy.

  • I went 115 in a 40 mph zone… It wasn’t smart, but I was just seeing what my car could handle…
    ENOUGH of my rationalizations…

    I
    Was
    Stupid!

  • 110 mph. I was running late to a callback for acting and got lost.

  • 200 km/h, but i wasnt driving … ahh sucks to be me. Thats in Germany on the Autobahn but.

  • 98 on a country road.  Accidentally went 85 on gravel, hey that was fun.  But I’m usually good at going the speed limit. :)

  • down a hill…the spedomiter maxed at 85…I’m sure it was at least 90…but there was an uphill right after it so I didn’t get to go that fast.

  • 119

  • 85-90 or so.

  • I’m a speed limiter… but before our car got icky it could really creep up on you… so probably 80-85

  • 120 mph

  • hmmm … I think the fastest was probably 105 or 110 mph. I am not sure though… the needle was buried. And I got a ticket as well same night … but he only clocked me at 78 … thank goodness I slowed down through cities!

  • 80 mph

  • a little over 100 in my car, overdrive in my truck, 95 in an ambulance, and also 75 in a 35 in an ambulance.

  • omg you ran over a poor little rabitt?!?!?!!!!!

    thats so sad.

  • 21 speeds on my bike
    peace max

  • over 100, but i was driving a FORD TAURUS….

  • haha. i live in IL and i was born in NC so i found your post interesting ;)

sheesh…i’ve only driven like…90-95 i think. i’ve been in the car when someone was driving faster, but yeah not me, haha.

  • Somewhere between 90-100 probably.

  • Umm… I don’t drive…

But the fastest speed I’ve ever ridden in a car was 80 or 90 I think. It was a really long straight stretch of road in the middle of the desert, and there was absolutely no one else around.

  • 90 mph…. and I dont even have a license yet… ( i got a permit )

  • a little over 100 max. my accord doesn’t let me feel speed so half the time i dont even realize how fast i am going.

  • Never driven a car….

DYK that in Houston today it was revealed the HPD raises a portion of Houston 50 million dollar “need” by playing a game…. Guilty or not, who can get the 300 tickets in one month from ANYONE!?

    Justice is blinded for life….

  • 115 and just as a note my dads old olds has a top speed of 95

  • i can go about 10 on my horsedrawn carriage

  • welcome to nc! i am a local of ashville actually. hope you enjoy it here even though it might be a bit boring….

  • I believe around 70.  I am not a very fast driver.

  • I think the fastest I’ve ever driven in a car would be 85. That’s only as fast as my car will go, and I’m too scared to attempt anything faster in the p.o.s. Asheville, NC…nothing special, is it? I used to attend Western Carolina University, 45 minutes south of Asheville..45 minutes south of civilization.

  • um, i cnt drive yet

  • Welcome to NC.  Just a note.. Andy Griffith does not allow speeding.

  • Why oh why do they always ask that?  Or, “Do you know why I pulled you over?” Ugh

Not driving, but riding in a car- 120.  Driving, 85

  • i never drove but i’ve been in 76 miles per hour is the fastest

  • A friend asked me to check out his new roadrunner. Oh my…did I regret that decision. Upon inserting the key in the ignition, he told me he was a race car driver and he wanted to see how fast we can go. ( a race car driver???)

I think we topped the hill at 120mph….it was all a blur.

    Take care,

    lefilly
