Race Part 4
I have been traveling this last week and I have noticed something about every city I visit. Every city that I visit has a Martin Luther King Dr. I don’t notice a Washington Street. I don’t notice a Clinton Street. I simply see a Martin Luther King Jr. Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is coming up here.
Is Martin Luther King Day a politically correct holiday?
Comments (175)
well Washington has his own state….
Hm…..good question. I’m not sure.
I’m not sure. I debate with it myself. I suppose so… :
I think so, yes.
Oh, but wait…you have to think about a racists feelins.
So on the other hand, maybe not.
Of course, even the psycho Jesus freaks that cruise this place looking for a good time to inject some OBEY THA LAWWWD can’t hate on black people and make it rational….can they?
RYC: Good point. I’d post more, but I’d rather keep it all crafted and high-quality (no offense). I’m content, for the most part.
I think so. I think people might over hype the “black”-ness of it, when he should just be appriciated for being a great man.
I would say that it is. Am I top 10? Wow!!!!
how would it be politically incorrect?
Politically Correct Holiday? YES
LA has all of the aforementioned streets.
I don’t understand why MLK Day would be politically incorrect.
12th!
If I say no, it’ll make me look like a racist, so yes, it’s politically correct.
No. I think the celebration of an American who strove for racial equity in the manner he did on the national level is justified.
I think it is politcally correct. I think it is sad that most of the Martin Luther King Streets, Drives, Roads run through the worst parts of most cities…that is politically incorrect.
Not really-maybe
It could be argued both ways. I think it’s unfortunate that one has to worry if something is ‘PC’ or not. The movie ‘Crash’ addresses this issue. It’s a must see!
Just as correct as Columbus Day or St. Patrick’s Day. And, actually, probably a little more appropriate than those.
I’ll say no to your question: But now I know I’ll catch alot of slack for saying so.
Why wouldn’t it be?
Well, Martin Luther King Jr. was an amazing man. However, he seems to have been elevated above other great men because of his color. For instance, we have president’s day, to honor over 40 men that are lumped together under “presidents” and celebrated as such. Martin Luther King Jr. gets his own day, he doesn’t share it with Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman or others that could be catagorized as “African American leaders.” So, by giving him his own holiday, aren’t we glorifying one kind of person over another? Isn’t this what MLK Jr. was fighting against? Just something to think on….
I guess it is….but we have a washington street in my city….along with a fillmore, and a polk, and a buchanon, and a kennedy.
yeah MLK is like immortal presidents and others always have controversy around them
I don’t know.
All I know is that everywhere I go in GA there’s something to do with MLK.
i don’t really know about that…but he influenced so many people…then again so did about half the world, and you don’t see them with their own day.
Yes. I hate it so much when people say it is a “black” holiday. Gosh, he was a beacon towards equality in all fashions not just for African Americans. He helped show that skin color is not a quality of who you are as a person.
Russ
No
i dunno…we get out for it…but we don’t get out for Veterans day…
I think that’s kind of ironic…
I’m not racist…I just think it odd that we don’t give honor to the people that gave Martin Luther King his rights to begin with. The veterans of wars.
OH well
Have a nice evening.
-Chris
Meh, it doesn’t matter to me, I never remember when it’s coming up or gone. Same with Pres. Day. It’s just not a huge event on my calendar.
How could it be considered unpc?
Funny comment by Drakonskyr
… I’m not into being politically correct. In fact, What do they call us Hawaiian Samoan Filipinos these days??
– My sister informed me it’s not pc to call us islanders anymore…but I don’t see why not, I mean we are from the “islands”…
besides that, politically correctness makes me angry
If I wanna refer to a general person as ‘he’ instead of ‘he/she’ I’m going to.
so…i don’t really care for political correctness
-Chris
I don’t know that Canada has anything with Martin Luther King on it…
Huh?
How is something a “politically correct” holiday? (Well besides Merry Christmas vs. Happy Holidays, etc.).
I don’t understand this question.
I don’t know…but I guess ti could be considered that.
getting off school for it is stupid
have you ever been in philadelphia? well, we have a washington avenue down in south philly.
and what did clinton do that was significant?
oh, and president’s day isn’t really a day “to honor over 40 men that are lumped together under “presidents” and celebrated as such” (balletismylife07). since lincoln and washington’s birthdays (both men who made a difference) were around each other.. i guess they decided to make ONE holiday for them.. but decided to call it president’s day..
hey, i could be wrong :]
It’s not a holiday for me so I don’t really care. :Þ
Whatever. We get school off o_o;
Care to define what exactly you are asking?
I think Dr. King deserves a bit more than your vague, de-contextualized question.
Yeah I mean I live in the smallest town in the world and even we have a Martin Luther King street haha…
of course we have Washington Street and Jefferson Street too
The hits just keep on coming.
i don’t know anymore what is poltically correct or not. the world’s in shambles, that’s pretty much it.
RYC: Thank you. That will be my horse one day. Really really. But. I haven’t put the blue in my hurr yet, so you wouldn’t see it.
Does a KKK member accept the day off Monday, or go into work anyway as a protest?
yes, I think so. We have a few streets and highways named for presidents in Chicago. RYC: Thank you, that really means a lot to me coming from you, I sincerly mean that.
It is. I’m still waiting for a General Robert E Lee Day. Since I’m related I should have this day off anyway.
Actually, I believe Presidents’ day used to be separated into Lincoln’s and Washington’s b’days.
RYC: Yeah, DARK chocolate!
RYC: heh that’s my ” I don’t wanna LOOK like anybodys grandma” look
One question:
Who or what is RYC?
Every city may not have a Washington Drive but I guarantee you they have a KKK Avenue . . .
Yes.
I say yes. What he stood for was so IMPORTANT. Heck, we have a Martin Luther King Street. But we also have a Bob Hope Street, a Clinton Street, Washington Street, etc. I am surprised we don’t have a theologian street.
I think that is a pun in itself…Martin Luther was anything but politically correct, infact isn’t that what we know him for?
But to answer your question, I think so, he changed the way America saw itself…religiously, racially, and politically
yess
if they dont theyll be called racist.
Yes, I believe so. He did a lot to ensure much needed changes for this country. He stood up when others rose against him. He did not cower, but pushed ahead. He was a brilliant speaker and leader. He eventually died for what he believed in. But most important, he is the one that America as a whole has chosen to immortalize, so that is why he has his own day and not just anyone who fought for equality.
Political correctness is dumb anyway.
I’m not sure I understand the question. Politically correct? I don’t think it’s a thing that can be argued about… maybe I just haven’t heard an argument about it. It’s a day honoring someone who made great strides for civil rights in our country… I don’t see what the problem is, unless you think there’s a different person who deserves more recognition for efforts in the same area.
I honestly just don’t understand the problem presented here.
No. He was DR. Martin Luther King Jr.
Is Columbus day? The man took a wrong turn and now he has hias own 24 hours on the calender.
sure
I’ve actually never thought of it… It’s more just a day off school. I think it’s a good holiday to have, but most people never really think twice about it.
I hope you didn’t find my comment on wuwu’s xanga in any way insulting. Your xanga should have it’s own speical featured content no lie, I’ve always thought about that ever since I started reading your xanga. I wonder if xanga would pay you…you could make a living out of this xanga. I dont know how you can think of so many questions… It’s weird, I think everyone thinks about the questions you ask all the time but we kind of overlook them.. But when you post them.. we are forced to think about that one small area in the many questions that go through our mind everyday. I dont know if that made sense.. but there you have it. So I’m sorry if I offended you in any way
sure
Yes, it’s *Politically* correct… would it be incorrect not to have it, no there are plenty of people who have contributed greatly to society that don’t have Holidays……. RYC: No problem, & No rush….. just making sure there wasn’t a creepy feeling…..
LOL…….
Absolutely. Not that he wasn’t a great man, but there are other great men who didn’t get their own government holiday…
absolutely not. it seems as if society is trying to make up too much for something that happened in the past. this may make me sound apathetic however you don’t go to india and see alot of gandhi streets, just a small homage to him in his hometown. yet, miraculously nobody has forgotten who he is. somehow people in America think that if we dont have constant reminders of our past, we will forget it. instead i think it would be more meaningful if these reminders were more subtle and meant more to the people who love the history and appreciate the sentiments that go along with MLK day rather than having the masses all pretend to care, when in reality they don’t.
either way, it’s a day off of school. : )
I agree with talk2ben. MLK jr. was a great man because of what he stood for and achieved for all races. I don’t think it should be thought of as a black holiday only. It’s become an issue causing further racial controversy, which I think he would hate. Here in SC there was a huge debate last year over making MLK an mandatory holiday, meaning all businesses had to give the employees the day off. It turned into this huge racial fight here-very ugly.
Then again, if you consider how terribly blacks were treated by some in this country only 50 years ago, it makes sense that MLK would become so personal to them.
Anyway, in case this doesn’t make sense, no, I don’t have a problem with MLK day.
Presidents day is for Lincoln and Washington.
Is Presidents day still considered a national holiday, where children get the day off? If so, then yes, MLK day is pc. If not, then no, it is not.
I have also noticed that MLK drive is always in the bad section of town, where ever I have been anyways. I think that would be a good question to ask next. “Is MLK drive, street, ave, whatever, in your town, in a bad neighborhood?” I’m curious.
I think tying Martin Luther King, Jr. to political correctness would seem like a joke to him. I was around during the Civil Rights Movement, and HE was not politically correct himself. He was a man with a vision who became a leader because his vision was so needed and so right. I don’t know if I could call it politically correct, but I’m glad he is honored.
this question is not clearly-defined enough for me to feel I can give a correct answer.
dont know what you mean by “politically correct holiday” but… seems to me that its fair, and appropriate, if thats what you’re asking.
Partially.
He certainly did something special that was against south America and even the federal gvt. (yes, it’s true. the FBI in particular), but it is politically correct.
Little Rock Arkansas has streets named after all three of these figures.
RYC again: I don’t know what I could seriously add, I write as a fun hobby for me and I love that others enjoy it. I also try to write meaningful comments when responding to someones site so that they know I am not just commenting to get an E prop back. There are many sites I love and I stick to those. I hope I get E props because I am ” real” and people can relate to me. My mom thinks I’m funny, she say’s that’s why. But you already wrote about the core friendship thing. I think you covered it. Besides I have never made it past five lol. And thanks for being such a good sport, I really appreciate it, some people can’t take a joke, and your such fun material.

Asking if it is politically correct is a bit of an absurd question. Great people deserve streets named after them. MLK was a great man. No one should have a problem with it. Geez.
Without MLK Jr. We would all probably be living in a war-torn country. A country where the whites were fighting, just about everyone else.. So say thanks, and don’t ponder.
yes, its good
At the risk of being thought a racist myself, I say no.
um, what is a politically correct holiday? i feel like you’re trying to get at something but you’re not really asking it. you know…you’re being politically correct…
We needed a January holiday. It keeps your mail ontime and probably saves the lives of thousand upon tousands of postal workers.
in order for somehting to be politically incorrect, it should offend someone… whom would the second monday of january offend? ::: shrug :::
Good question…and I’m not sure. We took Abraham Lincoln and George Washington’s birthdays and combined them into a “President’s Day”. What if we make a new one called “Great Americans” day. Someone mentioned Columbus Day and St. Patrick’s day…but those aren’t federal holidays, I don’t think so anyway…. I might feel differently if I actually got MLK day OFF from work…LOL…but I’ll be setting my clock for 7am on Monday and going in like every other day of the year…
PS…my town doesn’t have a MLK drive
Politically correct….is anything really “politically correct”?
yes- i really think it is significant to our culture and our country
plus i love another day off
yes it is…
It’s a fine holiday, but…I mean, there are people who don’t event think Christmas should be allowed in stores. Someone’s always going to have a problem with it.
Sure – but why isn’t President’s day a national holiday? It really comes down to who has more lobbying power … and that would be the NAACP.
I think he is someone we should all celebrate regardless of race…
yes
What does politically correct mean?
MLK is more of a hero than many of our former presidents.
“MLK is the black guy right?”
I believe you have to be known to be polically correct.
Good thing society is just that screwed up.
yes, he has played an integral part in our country’s history
He was a big player in the civil rights movment. That was political. So, yeah.
I would say yes
Well, as far as I know, he’s the only black man that we get a day off of school in order to remember him. How many white guys do we have days for during the year? I don’t see how political correctness has anything to do with it.
I think that the U.S. is eager to honor black men and women because of slavery.
BUT, I don’t think that it’s right to throw slavery into other’s faces just because they’re black. It happened a while ago. No one we know personally today has been a slave. So I say stop mulling over the past and lets move on. Therefore I don’t think we should go on naming all these streets after black people just because they’re black.
I do think however that we definitely should honor Martin Luther King Jr, not because he was black, but because he was an awesome person who did great things in civil liberties. He should be honored, just as other people are honored because he did great things, but because of his color or ancestry.
yah, I would say so
Your question really is ambiguous. Are you asking whether the holiday is created from a sense of political correctness or whether it is politically correct to have the holiday?
The answer might be different depending on how you view the question.
Can a holiday be labeled as “politically correct”?
mhmm.. I’m from Canada and we don’t have martin luther king day, but I think that any day that you don’t have to work or get paid time and a half is a good day.
RYC= Referring to your comment. Meaning Dan left a comment on their site and they are referring back to it.
Yes, but not because he encouraged blacks to fight for their rights, but because he changed an entire nation, and generally inspired most, if not all minorities.
I do think though, that there should be streets or other landmarks for all important figures.
I just want to share one thought on Martin Luther King Day. …This past Christmas we were traveling on the east coast and then down south. My husband and I were sitting at a train station in a nice town (and I wont say as to not offend anyone in that town) …but my husband asked me …”Notice there are TWO waiting rooms here?” and I asked him what he was talking about. He said the only thing different about this part of the country and segregation is they have removed the signs. So I got up, walked over to the other waiting room and noticed for myself. Waiting room 1 was all white people and waiting room 2 was all black people. Both a mix of first class and coach, but waiting in two different waiting rooms. On the train ride back to Washington DC I actually noticed preferntial treatment of White people. When we arrived in Washington DC that morning I wanted to visit the Lincoln Memorial…when I did I looked down at my feet and noticed engraving on the spot where I stood. That was the spot where Martin L King gave his “I have a Dream” speech. I actually got a chill when I stood there. I couldn’t help but reflect back on the waiting room in that small southern town…and I thought to myself, this is December 2005.
5 hours and 110 comments… thats 20 a day…
I mean an hour –;
What is so politically incorrect about it in the first place?
Yes, because I get paid an extra 8 hours in Holiday pay. OK I shouldn’t have said it. We have Columbus Day, and he wasn’t even a President, and didn’t even discover the US so…MLK did a lot more than that, so yes it is PC correct.
We have a MLM Blvd here in Indy…And a Washington St. Though we have a bunch of state streets running through downtown, so I think that one was a State street.
K I have rambled enough now.
I don’t get how a holiday is PC or not, but I’d say it’s a holiday that deserves to be there.
hey, can you add me to protected please?
I think MLK day is definitely NOT a holiday.
MLK was a great leader and changed the course of history for the US.
Politically correct? Yes.
Correct? No.
And there are a ton of “Washington” and “Adams” and and “Clinton” (unfortunately) streets in my area…then again, I live in DC.
by the deffinition of politcally correct, no. but alot of good things are not politically correct.
This is Washington D.C. suburbs, and I’ve lived here all my life, and I haven’t heard of a MLK street . . . oh, there’s King St. in Alexandria, but that doesn’t refer to MLK, does it? The next one over is Duke St. That wouldn’t be Duke Ellington, would it? It would just be King, Duke, royalty stuff.
What happened to the post you were going to post about how to get 100 – 300 comments? And the protected list of people who can see it?
The words “political” and “correct” never sound appropriate together.
Now, “Political” and “fucked-up” seem to match like fingers and nostrils.
hahahah
That’s a good point, Anna – well, the first part!
Oh, btw, racism and biogotry is alive and well in the USA.
Reference: Barbara Bush and her comments about the poor black refugees from NO.
nasty old bat
You know what…why are white people even answering this question?
I live in Little Rock. We have a Dr. Martin Luther King Drive. Clinton Avenue, Washington street in fact today I worked at a Habitat for Humanity site on that street, Polk, Tyler, Jefferson, Grant, Hughes, Roosevelt, J.F.K. boulevard etc
However I don’t think we have a Lincoln, Adams, Regan, Bush, Nixon streets. I think it’s crap that we give african american’s february, the shortest month of the year, black history month. Oh and let’s have MLK day off…that’s supposed to take care of years of injustice?!?! It’s right up there with giving women the month of March during which one week the school kids are out for a week for spring break. Thanks a lot, guys. So we again are making african americans and women second class citizens once again. I know. I can’t believe I’m actully saying stuff like this and I’m republican however I’m a Lincoln republican before Strom Thurmond screwed up my party. Okay stepping down off the soapbox. Have a blessed day!
Your question is multilayered, because the term “politically correct” has negative connotations. It’s perfectly appropriate to name a street after one of the greatest Americans who ever lived. And most cities DO have streets named after many of the Presidents – Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Lincoln, etc. Chicago does, Peoria does, Champaign does, and I’m betting that Springfield does, too.
Sure it is. Martin Luther King Jr. was a great man, and used peace to protest injustice. Also, it’s great that because of him I get school off on my birthday. : )
Our city was named after President James Madison.
Ah, I see I answered a different question than what you asked. Yes, I think it’s appropriate to honor a great American with a holiday. But that’s because I think that King was arguably the greatest living American, akin to, say, Gandhi in India.
RYC: haha.
It’s okay, It was a before and after of my hair cut.
Understandable mistake.
I might be in the minority by writing this, but I shall do so anyway. I think MLK Day is a PC Holiday and although I totally appreciate the day off of work, I sometimes dread this day because of the events that always seem to surface in my city on or about that holiday. Unfortunately, Jessie Jackson comes to Greenville, SC usually ever year for MLK Day and has something to protest concerning the holiday or some other cause that he deems the minority population is being wronged over. Last year it was the fact that Greenville County didn’t recognize MLK Day as a holiday. There are a lot of companies that do not recognize it and whether you are for or against it, I believe it is irreverent to have fighting and protesting on a day that should be celebrating this incredible man. This year he is coming yet again and I believe it has something to do with the Jessie Jackson Townhomes that the city is currently refurbishing. It always ends up in turmoil when it should be a day to recognize a man who dedicated his life to a very important cause. It seems that it is a PC holiday and one in which people end up protesting and fighting rather than the opposite of what I think Dr. King would have wanted. I wish that these leaders such as Jessie Jackson would take a step back and really remember this day for what it was meant to be. They shouldn’t use it as a platform to fight about something else. Is this what we do on Christmas Day? I hope that this is not the sentiment in other parts of the country because at this point Jessie can only be in one place at a time, so the rest of you have been spared! =)
uhhh.. screw politically correct?
yeah, i think so. =]
not so much politically..
He was a person who set blacks
to freedom. Yeah i think we should
celebrate his birth. He
changed everyone’s lives.
HEY! I live on Clinton Street! lol I’m serious
doesn’t it ever bother you that you get so many comments?
by the way, I like your site.
and I love C.S. Lewis
God Bless!
Where I live we do not have a Martin Luther King Dr…. but, since its still pretty surprising and rare to see an African American person in town…I guess thats normal? I think the holiday is fine, because it really isn’t about him being black, it was about what a great leader he was and the great forward thinking ideas he had… now, as everything, it probably has turned into more of a black thing… but I don’t think it started that way.
What is a more interesting question to pose is… we have a United Negros Foundation to help ONLY blacks go to school…. is there a WHITE scholarship program? We even have American Indian scholarships…. its always interested me, and i’ve always thought someone NOT African American should apply for a scholarship and see if they get it. If not… sue.
Will you add me to your protected list?
Of course. If you sacrificed a good part of your life devoted to the promotion of peace when you didn’t have to, wouldn’t you think that a day under your name is well-deserved? Clinton did what he did because it was his job as president. Washington has his own state.
Furthermore, he was assassinated as a martyr. He died, firmly believing in his cause. That’s bravery and persistence beyond any American I’ve encountered.
Besides, how can it possibly be politically incorrect?
Ya, it’s politicly correct. In my opinion I don’t think we should worry so much about “offending” people with PIC terms. Since when did everyone become so sensetive?
Okay what the heck do street names have to do with MLK Jr. Day and politically correctness? Just wanted to ask.. and RYC to Anna, you’re right politics and fucked up match like a glove and a hand. Refer to Bush’s “We’ll help the black people in New Orleans” talk, that was say… 3-5 months AFTER Katrina? Funny, how Wal-Mart beat the government to New Orleans, also hilarious how it took only 6 days for Bush to take control of Iraq… Yeah and why ARE white people answering?
Yes.
Erika
In response to MYday500…we anwer this because we too happen to be americans…dont be making this a racial issue. It’s an american issue. Stop it!
i think that it is fine. other presidents have holidays too.
RYC: heheh it’s called HOLD BACK THE YEARS!!!!
Since it is politicaly incorrect to be racist, honoring someone who strove to bring about racial equality is correct.
I have seen several Washington Streets in the Bay Area…
It doesn’t matter if it’s politically correct. He was a wonderful human being who did great things for this country and the entire world. I think he should be honored in every way possible.
Yes.
Washington and Lincoln have days.
St. Patricks, St. Valentines, and all those.
It’s sad that he was killed.
He’s one of my heros.
Me
IDTS.
We have a Washington street, and it is probably the most famous street in town, it’s known simply as “The Strip.”
I don’t think it is politically incorrect. It would be considered PI if it were called “black day” or something like that, but I don’t see how a persons name can convey a PI meaning.
So, PC it is. And I don’t really see why we have the term ‘politically correct.’ Do we really have to put a label on a list of words that can be said without being discriminatory against someone? Instead of telling someone that they are not being PC, why can’t we just tell them they are wrong, or that they are cursing, or something to that effect?
And I am greatful to bubblysox for bringing this up. There are black only frats, black only sororities, black only scholarships, black only colleges, BET on television, organizations such as the NAACP, etc. Now, before people get at my throat, I have nothing against black people, except the fact that, in my experience, they are almost always the first ones to bring the race element into an argument. I mean, white people are too scared to even say anything near a racial comment, because we would get sued to no end. Just as if there were white only colleges, white only frats, white only scholarships, etc. How come it is ok for minorities to do this, but it is wrong for whites to do it? What would happen if I, a white person, were in charge of giving a scholarship, and I turned an individual down because they were black? I have read a scholarship form for african-americans, it said in the requirements section that you had to be african-american or native american to qualify. I’ve never seen a scholarship that requires you to be, as I like to say, anglo-american (in other words, white). It makes no sense to me.
Well, it is if someone else decides there should be an Archie Bunker day and nobody has a problem with it. Did that come out like i intended? I think I butchered it. Oh well, there something funny in there somewhere and in the end I dont care what “days” people decide to name…except Christmas and Easter. The reast are all non important to me for the most part.
And to the comment bashing Bush for his response to the blacks affected by Katrina:
I don’t suppose the fact that the city of New Orleans is approximately 68% african-american had “ANYTHING” to do with why so many blacks were affected by the hurricane, do you?
anything politically incorrect is what i want to be.
i don’t get it. why is it not politically correct? i didn’t even know it’s an issue…but i know school kids love it cuz they get a day off. it that the issue? hmmm…
MLK was my boy.
Malcom x too.
Whateva the case, I’m truly distrubed by those districts that don’t have school off for MLK day but get it off for polaski, columbus, whateva.
Half (if not more) of america doesn’t even know who Polaski is.
Columbus was no hero, he was an idiot navigator who was awfull at math and thought he discovered India.
P.S. “For instance, we have president’s day, to honor over 40 men that are lumped together under “presidents” and celebrated as such” – balletismylife
Presidents day is essentially supposed to honor Washington and Lincoln, who’s birthday’s are very close together and would be silly to take two days off for.
ps PC is for queers, spicks, faggots, niggas, crackas, chincs, beans, degos… PC is lame. Express yourself, just prepare to get your ass beat if you do it the wrong way.
Yeah…
Cesar Chavez Day would be too.
And Geronimo Day, or maybe Squanto Day.
I don’t know what that means.
I dont comment often but yes Martin Luther King Jr Day is a politically correct holiday. As a white male I know that I have little to complain about when compared to the rest of the world but in high school (I am a freshmen in college) it seemed that black history was the history that all Americans should be proud of. The accomplishments of Thomas Jefferson was overshadowed by the fact he owned slaves. Martin Luther King is placed on a pedstal where people do not like to talk about his faults. Very few people like it when some one mentions that King was a womanizer. It seems that our society is much like that of Germany. We have a national feeling of guilt. While some people who were Nazi’s or Nazi sympathizers are still alive there is no one alive who was alive during the Civil War or when slavery was legal. It is time the we quit forcing terms like White and Black on our history when we should be examing the achievements of people such as Rosa Parks and George Washington and Cesar Chavez as American History. When we finally are able to become color blind like that King’s dream will have become a reality.
No and Yes.
I definitely think there should be a day to celebrate civil rights, but there were many civil rights leaders, so putting only MLK’s name on it doesn’t seem enough.
Are you kidding me? What is politically incorrect about fighting for equal rights for all ethnicities? He died fighting for what he believed in … changed history … give him a few freaken streets and a little respect!
If I understand the question, you are asking if MLK day is just a sort of an obligatory quota-inspired holiday. My answer is no. If we were looking for the top 52 most influential individuals in US history, and giving holidays according to an objective scale, one per week, MLK would easily fall within that group.
yeah, i guess it is. but if there’s an MLK day, i want a gandhi (ghandi? gahndi?) day too! AND a mother theresa day! i really don’t see a problem with it….
naked??
YES IT IS AND HE’S COOL BECAUSE HIM AND I HAVE THE SAME BIRTHDAY HEHE
yeah to me down here’s in Arkansas its not Martin Luther King Day its Robert E. Lee Day Heck Yeah!
well he is one important person… if you say anything else you are a fvking racist
there are washington streets and there is only ONE clinton street, in northern california. it made news that a street was named after him.
I don’t follow how it would be politically incorrect. So, I can’t really answer
There is no reason for anyone to be concerned whether something is politically correct or not. Opinions are everywhere and worrying about saying “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas” at Christmas time or any other kind of censorship is ridiculous. You don’t have the right to never be offended. There is absolutely nothing wrong with having an MLK day.

hey sexy
I guess you haven’t visited my city b/c we do have a washington st.( but not clinton) And we have a lot of other president streets as well.( don’t feel like mentioning them). But i don’t think we have a martin luther king st, But i do think it is a politically correct holiday b/c he “dreamed” big and went forward with it and made a big success. ( in my opinon) But it seems like we don’t have very many big dreamers anymore. How come? – Jenae

I think Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was one of the greatest men of all time in the whole world – especially in the US – Yes – this is a politically correct holiday.
Bill Clinton involved us in war in Afganistan to offset his “mistake” with Monica Lewinsky. He doesn’t deserve a street named after him – even with all he is doing for society now. Just like David had too much bloodshed on his hands to be the one to build the Temple.
yes ………
Elmira does NOT have a Martin Luther King Dr. but we have a Clinton St., a Washington Ave and Clemens (after Samuel Clemens) Center Parkway. Where I work, we don’t get the day off….and I make it a point NOT TO BE politically correct!! I personally don’t think Martin Luther King day has anything to do with political correctness….
does it matter???
MLK day is the only politically correct holiday that I know, because it celebrates seeking justice and the free speech to improve your country. My hometown has no MLK drive, rather, most of the streets are Presidents or states, we have Washington and Lincoln and Illinois etc.
ya but did u no that martin luther king jr. dr. is usually in the worst part in that city such as where all the gangs and crimes go on and stuff.
well, martin luther king jr. day is also robert e. lee day, go figure. its not his(lee’s) birthday, not his deathday, nor a day on which he did something great, but was placed there after martin luther king jr day was already in place….but robert e lee day is probably only truly celibrated in the south…..
Heh. We have plenty of streets such as Washington, etc.
I doubt it - not because of his race – but because he preached the word of God and repentance.
Anyone proclaiming Christ in this age is usually not on the politically correct team.

His message wasnt a black or white message, it was a message of peace. His message has been twisted by both sides of the racial coin, as has Malcolm X’s. Many missed the point entirely. I hear whites speak bitterly and cynically about MLK day. My roommate is not white, and his observations on that day I will be keenly awaiting.
