It’s all relative. It depends on what you want your audience to be, if you even care to have an audience. Maybe you just want to vent. What’s substantial to you, isn’t necessarily going to be to everyone else. Depending on my mood, sometimes I want a laugh, sometimes I want to think about something deep, sometimes I just wanna see what’s going on in someone else’s life, the everyday stuff.

something more than just a line. something informative or thought-provoking.
or just something entertaining for us to read.
Substantial to whom? I suppose “content” that interests the person posting it or the person reading it. So, substantial would mean something different to each person.
Things that make ya go hmmmm…
I “just” saw this come up…and there are already this many posts…oh wow…anyway…

I think it really depends on who is reading it and how they would define “substantial”. Readers might judge this by: 1) the number of comments, 2) the quality or appropriateness of the content, 3) how much the writer enjoys creating it and how significant it is to him or her, 4) the reaction it produces in others, 5) how much they like the subject matter and the opinion expressed in it, etc.

Substance.

relevance to current events, and/or concerned with daily routines in people’s lives.
as long as someone reads it and thinks about it, it’s substantial. this is a very broad thing. in reference to an earlier commentor about having to have a good point and being agreeable, something could be offensive with no point intended (or depicted), and it could be a substantial entry. why? because someone has to think about it to determine that it’s offensive or whatever. and in reference to an earlier commentor, the writer him/herself does qualify as a reader.
i think i may be glad i was told about this site.
A question that makes you think
For me, something funny, with content, and shows who you are. But it depends on the reader like people have said.
something that catches the eye of your reader – it could be a silly word, phrase, something meaningful to you or your readers. Sometimes things don’t have to be meaningful to the author because it might just catch the eye of the reader.
not much, a question, an answer, a theory whatever
Well, actually, I’m just amused that this post itself has no substance. Kinda a bit of irony.
more than that, lol
Thought.
I hate when people write stupid things like “Today I ate a cheeseburger for lunch and now I’m going to go see a movie leave me lots of comments!!” The reason I keep a blog is to record my thoughts and feelings, getting feedback is just an extra. I think it’s also important to be yourself and not get caught up in an online identity, people want to read what you feel, not what you want to feel.

A question that spurs people to answer.
This one has 56 comments so far… Guess it’s substantial enough.
Something amusing or thought-provoking. It doesn’t have to be anything really profound. It’s possible to turn the most mundane incident into a hilarious story.
i can tell what you are dealing with, and i wouldn’t worry about it… everyone’s style is different, and nobody is without detractors. so i now this isn’t going to make it go away, but just know that you don’t need to worry too much about what he thinks of you.
now back to your question, something which required effort from the blogger. something that reflects a thought process.
substance is something that deals with matter. a blog does not have matter. a blog cannot have substance.
Why do you ask? *wink*
i think that words might be an important factor…well you could pull off a post on a funny or thought provoking picture
content worthy of recognition. content that makes you think. you do all of that and more.

Oh and by the way Dan, I spoofed you. I know that doesn’t offend you (you said so yourself) but I just thought I’d let ya know.
Anything. In my opinion, in an entry, it’s what the reader construes as relating to themselves- thought-provoking, interesting, etc. as what determines substance.
It depends on the writer. I like to see the person’s personality in the blog. It helps if I am interested in the topic.

Interesting topic or pictures
Words. But it’s gotta mean something.
A coherent formulation of words.
Okay, honestly: substance, good style, & a thought provoking idea; the author also needs to be open minded. I hate reading blogs in which the author thinks his/her opinions are just the dog’s tuxedo. A person can be confident without being overbearing.
A single word could do it.
Answers are nice… But if not answers, then more questions! Something more to think about. Counting yeas and neas may generate statistics, but stats seldom tell the whole story. But more questions –> more story! Mystery is another gift from God!
It depends on what you are trying to use your blog for. If it is to share information with friends, then probably a statment about how you are. If it is about asking people questions, then a question on something that they will relate to.
It needs to have proper grammar. It’s annoying when people tYpE LiKe ThIs. By the way, I’m writing an article about how some people want to be on Featured Content (not saying you want to), but because you’re commonly featured, I just want to get a quote or comment from you about how you feel about always being on Featured Content for my article. It’s for journalism class.

apparently nothign whatsoever- this one is pretty good.
Well, anything a person writes must be substantial at least to them. But if your talking about your readers, it really needs to more than “today I went to Kelly’s and we had pizza and watched Finding Nemo. LOL!!! It was uber cute!”
thought provacation. or deeply emotional entries.
substantial is relative.
Thoughtful questions that invite thoughtful replies.
It depends. Mine are just reports of my life. Yours are more in the way of maybe flickers of your life used to pose a theological, or physchological, or hypothetical question we are meant to debate or comment on. It’s all in the eye of the beholder, I guess.
First and foremost, it shouldn’t be tYpEd LiKe tHiS.
After that, something besides a minute by minute replay of what happened at ninth grade today between Johnny and Sally. But this is free speech in action, so who am I to say what should and shouldn’t be written.
I know what you can have to earn my respect, correct punctuation. I’m not going to say spelling, you can always use spell check, and some words are just hard. But damn people, learn how to use commas and periods. Use capital letters too. Ok, grammar as a whole just sucks for most people. My mom is a fifth grade English teacher, and she says they don’t stress grammar like they should because “the powers that be” are too worried about the students getting higher test scores in mathematics. She also teaches in Oklahoma, which is 48th in the nation for teacher salaries, which is also bullshit.

Why are so many people hating on you Dan?
Why do I enjoy your site?
Because I like to sit here and read all the answers that all of these various people write. It’s great hearing other people’s points of view and gaining points of view that I may not have thought of. Isn’t that the point?
I think that a blog only needs to be what you want it to.
More than that.
On second thought…it depends on what your definition of substantial is.
One definition is simply that it’s real. Another that it is abundant… So it depends on if you’re asking content or length and another innumerable amount of factors.
I think a blog should have interesting content; not like those ones where it’s just an annoying daily journal. I think they need to actually have something interesting or educational about them.
depends on you and your audience. depends on what you care about your audience. if you’re a writer who cares what your audience thinks of you and your writing, you’d probably wanna go more with what your audience wants. If not, just go with what’s substasntial to you.
at least 200 words, or short and with a purpose.
I guess just something interesting to read. Not a list of what you did today, how many phone calls you received, what you ate for breakfast.
I figured out what ryc stands for.
I don’t know, by the response you get, yours must be considerably subsantial. It come here because you bring up things that as an adult I can relate to. I was considering giving up my site because I could find nothing but kids. Don’t get me wrong here, I love kids, but it’s nice to run in the Cafe when I have time and visit with others that have a viewpont on something besides the mall. To bad you don’t serve cappicuino. Forgive the spelling if it is wrong, it’s not in my dictionary.
Silly me you do serve cappuccino!
it’s up to the person writing it.
it IS their blog, after all.
At this rate, I know my site won’t do much more than make you think, and even then, I don’t know how many people it will do that to…
Yes, thought-provoking is an important one. Not just a rant, but something that isn’t too extreme, but isn’t any lame-brain crap either.
-BlacKeys Shirly
It needs to have a blue background and ask questions.
Substance. Kidding Kidding… It needs to have emotion, heart, belief, and thought-provoking topics are always a plus.
It needs to have some sort of update on what is happening in the person’s life. Something interesting to keep me reading. And not just “we went to the zoo today”, I want something that tells me what really happened. Entries that make me think are always good. And, of course, good punctuation… run-on sentences with no punctuation or capitalization will turn me away immediately.
Something that makes you think twice.
((( GRANDMA HUGS )))
Lori
more than one sentence. something interesting. pictures. current event(s) recap with commentary. comic relief.
Is this a Test? I think it’s only relevent to the readers….. what might be interesting to some, would put others to sleep…
Something “deep and meaningful,” and something that general readers can understand, as in no inside jokes, cuz those leave other people feeling left out. Nothing mundane, such as “today I went somewhere… there was a lot of traffic…”
Boobies.
Boobies.
Something thought provoking, but that depends on what angle you are after.
The content i.e.- interesting text to read, good HTML graphics and of course pictures
Everybody have their own style …because its their blog ….there is no rule / process to write a blog, thats why blogs are so famous around the world. Everyday almost 30000+ new blogs are starting and some of them make a difference and get noticed.
All those famous blog have something in common though…quality content, thought provoking and interesting.
To be substantial, a blog should be somewhat entertaining and maybe move something in the reader. That movement may be deeper intellectual stimulation, or it may be to laugh, to cry… anything that moves you away from where you were when you started reading it. Yours does a good job.
Maybe something very intresting to read, like something crazy. pretty colors, and little pixles and stuff. not boring :]
It needs to have the “aha” factor. Subject matter that makes the reader say aha! and grow in some way. A truly substantial blog will lead to the betterment of society as a whole. It should enrich lives. Like mine does.
Ya got me, words maybe????
How about the word BEAUTY ?
A little bit of feeling and then something that makes you think.
144th!
Substance! Ha,ha,ha!
The answer is entirely subjective in that most would find it substantial only if it contains content that interests them.
Your posts are appealing across a broad spectrum of people because you usually devise the subject to have a widespread general appeal. So I suspect that most would say that they are substantial.

I think maybe you should be telling us. You are always on Featured Content just by all the comments you rack up with every post you make. So what do you think are the qualities your posts hold that makes everyone else fall short? I’m sure you already know and would rather we answer these for ourselves. Have a fabulous day.
Interesting stories or questions in ur case and in other cases naked pics
More than most of the Featured posts have…
teach me something about you or the world
The answer depends on each reader’s standard of substance.
YOur XanGa Suck biG DiCk
Anything that invokes thought or emotion.
Anything to provoke emotion.
If it’s just a random comment about your day and has no effect on the reader, it’s not substantial, IMO.
I has to be eye catching and relevant to someone else’s life. Drama included!
One that doesn’t have useless information.
It needs to be filled to the brim with insightful meaning, things that make you think, maybe even obvious things that we take for granted. Or, it could even contain interesting sightings or discoveries of the writer. Thats just my idea of a great post.
DiS WuD B Da KiNd Of PoSt dAt BuGs Meeeeeeeee…ones where ppl try to talk “cool” while rambling about what they ate for lunch.

any blog with a purpose. if it’s a means for 7th graders to communicate and talk about their day at PE and they enjoy it, then it’s substantial (to them) — even if they seem “mindless” to adults. hey, at least they are writing and not roaming around the mall mindlessly slurping on boaba’s (sp?).
It depends on the reader, yes, but they all have one thing in common: something eye-catching.
When people see something that sticks in their brain, they want to do something about it… usually comment it… like I’m doing right now.
for me, it has to have pictures.
Good shit….
Whatever the author is thinking as long as it is sincere, I believe to be sufficient enough to be substantial.
So whos definition of substantial are we going by? What anyone writes might be okay for one. but not the other. I don’t write for anyone, except myself. what you think is substantial, I don’t care,

Something that makes you think twice.

more than one sentence. something interesting. pictures. current event(s) recap with commentary. comic relief.

All everyone has said and more.. A personal touch, a style of a persons own, something that makes you think and like one said , when you take somethng with you when you leave the blog.
Peace and Love:)

I don’t write for anyone, except myself. what you think is substantial, I don’t care,
anything to grab my attention
The ability to evoke a reaction in the reader.
