  • IMing

    I am accepting friends with the new xanga feature.  If you don’t know what it is, look at my last post.


    I have three IM accounts.  I don’t know if that is a lot or not.  I started with MSN because a friend wanted to IM me.  I was slow to get started because I was afraid it would be too complicated.  I couldn’t get it to work after trying to for an hour or two.  Then another friend told me to try AIM express.  So I downloaded that and it worked perfect.  I later had to add yahoo in order to connect with those who didn’t have MSN or AIM.


    What is your favorite IM and how many people do you have on your IM buddy list?

  • meebo.com is pretty good for signing them all on at once.

    And it works over port 80, so you can use it at work/library/school too.

  • i’ve only used aim, but my friends say yahoo is better cause you can talk with friends overseas and webcam etc.

    and I’ve never really counted

    aol automatically adds a bunch of “recent buddies” to my list so half the people on their are people I rarely or never talk to anyway

    a lot of people I know get all in oners like trillian so they can use all the different messengers at once

  • aim was the standard back in the day, but without third-party software to get rid of all the ads and crapware, it sucks. i absolutely love gtalk (google) because of its simplicity. they don’t have a chat feature, but that’s only because it’s still a beta. they plan to add it in the complete version.

  • I use aim most of the time and i have about 140. Sometimes I’ll get on yahoo but those times are rare.

    I also use trillion to log onto msn, aim, and yahoo all at the same time.

  • weee! i heart IM! i have yahoo and MSn, i think MSN is the better of the two. i have around 27 people that i talk to.

    One one screen name I have about 100 people. On the screen name that I talk to people on I have less than 15. Only close friends have it.

  • I tried IM a long time ago just as it came out and found that it stole too many clicks off my processor and slowed my system down too much.  Now I don’t yet have internet and I can’t IM through the company firewall.

  • i’m an msner to the core.  only have about 20 people on there and only talk to five or six of them.  but it’s great.  i moved to the other side of the country and this has been a cheap way to stay in touch.  also get to chat with my cousin in africa every once in a while.  stellar.

  • AIM, i have 14 ppl on my list but i don’t IM anyone. i don’t like talking to ppl online but ppl IM me so i just talk sometimes.

  • I used to have ICQ back in the day.  I still think that program was way better than aim is.  But everyone else started jumping on the aim bandwagon soo…    Now I just have aim, my husband has aim and MSN.  I have about 20-30 buddies on my list, BUT I only really talk to a handful of them on a regular basis.

  • oh!  I forgot about google talk.  I have that now, too , since I have a gmail account.  It’s ok.  I’m waiting for google to come out with better features for it.

    ryc: why is it weird that i notice their teeth? oral hygene/maintenance is very important. haha.

  • I have the main 3… AOL YAHOO and MSN. As a result I use Trillian when I am online. I think I have about 20 people on the list (total), but most of them aren’t ever on when I am.

  • ICQ.I used to have about 80 people on my list, but I deleted the ones that I don’t talk to, and know I have 20.

  • I use a program called “Trillian” which lets me simultaneously connect to all my IM accounts from a single program. I have a total of 128 names, and only about 30 of them are ever on. Like me, most of my friends are either ALWAYS on or NEVER on.

  • AIM and only 26 people and I don’t talk to half of them and/or they have two screenames.

  • I have msn and yahoo, I use msn at work that is how we communicate and I use yahoo for all my friends.

  • Try downloading Gaim 1.3.

    “…Gaim users can log in to multiple accounts on multiple IM networks simultaneously. This means that you can be chatting with friends on AOL Instant Messenger, talking to a friend on Yahoo Messenger, and sitting in an IRC channel all at the same time…”

    And it’s only one program, rather than 3+ seperate ones. And don’t worry, it supports AIM (Oscar and TOC protocols), ICQ, MSN Messenger, Yahoo, IRC, Jabber, Gadu-Gadu, and Zephyr networks.

    Also, my husband uses a program called Trillian that puts all the IMing together so you dont have to log onto all the different programs and have their seperate little windows. It keeps everything very tidy, etc.

  • And I’ve got about a bajillion people on my AIM list, though I’m currently blocking 90% of them. I really don’t like Instant Messenging, myself. It distracts me from whatever MMORPG (EQ, UO, WoW) I’m playing at the moment.

  • AIM probably….because it is easier to hide.  I have about 50 or more on that one.  I have a Yahoo which I really just started using….it has more bells and whistles (if thats what you’re into).  I have an MSN account which I find hardest to use….and that is about all I want.

    AIM is by far my fav. YAHOO still gives you away if you hide.  …and sometimes I just want to be left alone.

    A friend once put me on her buddy list and I loaded that – I think it was AIM, but it used up too much of my old computer so I was soured on that.

  • MSN and I have 74 people. I had AIM for a while but I hated it, and then I got MSN which proved great.

  • I use AIM but out of 124 buddies I really only chat with a few people.  Just a constant away message checker!

  • AIM is my favorite for its ease of use. I LOVE IT! I’m welcome to IM’s anytime. I do not reveal personal information, so be careful what you ask.

    I have around 425 “buddies”… There’s usually 40-60 online at all times.

    RYC: The part that’s a drag is not being left home along…it’s that I haven’t left the house in almost 4 days and I’m going nutso in here.

  • I use AIM, and I have about 50 on my list now after deleting people I no longer talked to or just didn’t like…and I still only talk to a handful of the ones on my list now. I can be quite anti-social to be honest.

    And I figure if they want to talk to me, they can come talk to me or call me…I hate talking online because you can’t read people.

  • I personally like Yahoo the best, but I use AIM more. I have 28 on my AIM account, but only chat with about 3 or 4 on a regular basis. I have 14 on my Yahoo account, but only a couple are non work related (that is the Messanger of choice for my work). I’m not sure how many I have on my MSN, because I haven’t logged into that one in a while.

  • When I had aol, I used the buddy list, but do not subscribe to AIM Express. I have MSN and have had a various amount of people on that list from Family, Friends, and Game Buddies. I have subbed to yahoo…but don’t see it necessary to do both. Of course I suppose if I had friends that had it and wanted to connect, I would sub again.

  • I utilize Trillian, which allows you to sign in under AIM, MSN, Yahoo and ICQ at the same time. Of course, most of my buddies are online via AIM, so I’d have to say I like that one best. With Trillian, though, it allows me to catalog my IM conversations with people, so I know what was said between me and them in our last coversation, so I don’t repeat myself, since time is limited as it is, not to bring up the same conversation twice.   • I don’t log on much because the people I have on my buddy list are never on. It’s depressing, actually. My brother speaks to his friends almost exclusively through AIM. I’ve never seen the kid pick up a phone. I’d like to have more online friends, but the people I’d deign to talk to always seem to be busy.

    I am online frequently at work, so I keep my IM’ing to a minimum… I only have around 10 buddies I accept IMs from – because I know they won’t be put off by me putting them off if I can’t talk.

  • i have yahoo messenger… and i also have trillian.  trillian has the capabilities to use yahoo, aim, msn icq and another type of messenger all on one program.
    i like the yahoo interface, so i kept yahoo messenger… but i kind of wanted aim and msn… so i got trillian so i could run them without downloading multiple programs.  it is a bit to get used to if you like your current interface.
    i like yahoo messenger the best, i think… but that is probably because i have over 70 contacts on yahoo and not many on msn, aim and icq.  i also like the fact that yahoo lets you have IMvironments.  that is where you can change the background of your im window… most of them are simple advertising things… but the doodle one really interests me.  i give/receive chemistry and math help through the use of the doodle IMvironment.

  • I have AIM and Yahoo Messenger. I like Yahoo better (more fun options and smiley’s). I use them both equally: as little as possible. I’m not fond of IM’ing, I guess.

  • I have AOL,Yahoo and Google and prefer the AOL but I just like to use it to see if someone is there(ie still awake) and available to talk and call them. I have hundreds of ‘buddies’ but many are folks i don’t really know or possibly never spoken to at all – If i see some one who looks interesting and shows their SN I might just add it in case/future…You should IM me so I’ll recognise your SN  -ya know, in case you ever need me for some emergency advise…

  • i have both yahoo and AIM….i use them both because some have one and others have the other….i dont have a favorite just because its IMing no matter what…you are still talking to people online no matter which one you use…i have about 30 on yahoo and about 70 on AIM….i clean out some names if i dont talk to the person in a long time or the name isnt being used ( people i have meet online anyways…lol..)….anyways….the new xanga feature is neat i think…i have already started using it….hope you enjoy is as well….have a good day dan

  • I have 50 buddies on yahoo and 361 buddies on aim. They are both really cool.

  • I technically have 4, though I’ve only used ICQ & MSN on one occassion each. I started with AIM and enjoyed it, but their windows kept growing with new versions with no ability to shrink them. I now use Yahoo almost exclusively. I like being able to be invisible as I choose (including signing on invisible) and shrinking my windows (as well as hiding images & features). Unsure of how many I have on my lists. Too many on each!

  • I think AIM is the best.  I only have MSN, though, because of my hotmail.  I mostly don’t bother with any of them because 80% of my friends are always offline.

  • I have MSN and AIM. I have over 30 screen names on AIM, because I got really bored like 4 years ago and I was an immature 14 year old girl. I now keep to about 2 SN’s. I have around 30 buddies, but those are pretty much the people I actually want to talk to. I used to have over 100, but I deleted a lot because I didn’t talk to them, or I didn’t like talking to them.

    I only have about 6 buddies on MSN, because they don’t have AIM. I don’t know which I like better, but they are both good. Different options. I also have MSN as my internet provider, so it came with my internet.

  • AIM, but I love Trillian Pro. It allows you to sign onto the big 3 IM’s, yahoo, AIM, and MSN, also ICQ, and rendevous(sp?) if you have anyone else on your network with it. It also has lots of cool skins and plugins. The name is from one of my favorite charaters from one of my fav books, The Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy.

  • I’m a big AIM fan despite all the horror stories I’ve heard about it funking up one’s computer.  I have all of 12 people on it, all people I am always in direct contact with in real life.  I don’t screw around with packratting any sn that I hear.  I only have what I’ll use on it.

  • I used to have yahoo, but I got a new computer, and now I have AIM, and I never use it. I liked yahoo better, but I don’t like how they make you download all the other crap just to get the messenger, and it takes up too much space. I’ve heard the yahoo IM isn’t too safe either.

  • I used to run AIM, yahoo! and MSN all at once and keep the buddy lists in a line on my computer screen, but then I realized that everyone I talked to on MSN also had AIM accounts, so then I ditched MSN. And my computer is now too old to run yahoo! and AIM at the same time. Most of my friends have AIM so I’m almost always on that when I’m online but still log onto yahoo! daily for a short period of time.

    I keep my buddy list at 200. Whenever I need to add someone new, I go down my buddy list and delete someone that I almost never talk to. I figure that this way, I still have plenty of people to talk to if I get bored, and still keep my buddy list up-to-date.

    its a great way to work on hw, catch up woth people, gossip and basically just be a teenager.

  • I used the AOL one for a number of years; then most of those people left and I switched to MSN.  Have only used MSN Messenger once and that was on accident.  It’s always giving me error messages.  I hate it.

    and on AIM i have  16 buddies, but 4 of them are AIMbots.

    none of them are the same buddies either. i made AIM because people at school had it. except nobody is on either now…

    I frequently spring-clean my MSN contact list to delete away contacts who had been too quiet for too long. There’s 27 people on it now.

    ah… and the other kids have hundreds over!!!  Am I selective or wat?  haha.

  • Ah, I forgot to mention how many are on my list. 200 (the maximum, as far as I know).

  • I used to have aim, yahoo, and msn, but I never used yahoo and msn.  Then my computer died and I just never got around to downloading aim on my new computer.

  • I have 2 IM accounts. One on AIM and the second on MSN. I’ve lost track of the number of people on my buddy lists. I have been addicted to the methods of online communication since 1993 when my computer was a monster 40 meg hard drive, 4 meg of ram, 2400 baud modem and my AOL was dos based. :) I use IM’s primarily now as my means of communication with those in my life. Even my husband despite the fact that he’s either sitting in his recliner 3 feet away or out in the game room. I currently use a program called Trillion as it lets the user have open in one block AIM, Yahoo, MSN and Mirc. I would get too confused if I had more then the two accounts I use.

  • I used to use ICQ but then I switched about three years ago to msn. I thought it’s complicate too. I just counted there are about 180 people on my list but only 10 people that I sometimes will chat with them. I stays away or n/a all the time because I really have nothing to talk excepted for “how are you doing?” “fine, studying hard” “Oh yeah, me too” Some people ask me if I have Yahoo? I just don’t want to have another program. Basically, everyone stays n/a or away all the time =(

  • Sheesh, out of all these people I’m only one of two that uses gaim. All the messengers are the same, they all do the same stuff…people who use ICQ now are using AIM, ICQ got done aol’ed a while ago. All the ‘all in one clients’ work with varying degrees on each protocol…trillian blows unless you get the pro version…like I said, though, I like gaim…and the jabber prot is much better than yahoo, aol, or msn, imho. If I really just feel like killing time with chatting I prefer irc.

  • I have used 4 IM programs and currently use 3 of them.  I have probably a dozen accounts total on all 4 programs.  As for buddies . . . I have 250 names on all my accounts.  About 5 of them are overlaps.  And probably 150 of them are rarely or never signed in.

  • i use MSN for 2 of my friends, AIM for 4 more, but by far my fav is yahoo, which we use for/at work… i think i have about 40 ppls on my msgr list…

    i like yahoo the best becz of the emoticons > varied, and fun, without being obnoxious > plus the avatar feature can be nice… also, yahoo is the only place where anyone has IMed me out of the blue looking to be friends, so that is cool as well

    my one friend, Ces, has trillian, which lets you talk to all IM services….  but not all the emoticons transfer…

  • back in the day I only used ICQ. And then I started chatting on MSN. When I moved out west I dropped ICQ all together and now I only chat on MSN. I only have 27 people on my list. I used to have more than 100 but I never talked to most of them, so they got deleted!

  • I use Trillian. You can use one program and sign onto Aim, yahoo, msn, and icq messengers all at once. Plus they ahve awesome skins so you can change the way they look.
