Depends on whether or not the verses are appropriate for the situation.
Not really.
Yup, if it’s in context b/c the Bible is the Truth.
That’s a loaded question, Dan.
repulsed.
no i’m impressed when people answer questions for themselves.
Sometimes, yes!
depends….but sometimes it’s out of context
I’m impressed when people know the Bible well enough to apply verses to a topic. I say this for both people who are Christians as well as those who research enough to try and present a counter-argument.
12th
no, people being able to spout out bible verses does not show their reveance, it can, but most time people dont live their life the same way as the bible verses the quote tell them to. have a wonderful day Michael
If they quote them right, I’m happy they at least know the word.
Not usually. Quoting scripture to back oneself up is a part of my daily and normal life.
No, sorry.
i like it when they quote from the bible when you talk about gas prices, haha. peace max
2 Timothy 10-16
10You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, 11persecutions, sufferings—what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. 12In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13while evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Eh, No.
Depends on the question
…people LOVE to point out how Christians don’t live up to the name…it’s almost as if they think Christianity is the only religion people don’t live up to…kinda makes you go Blech…vomit.
ummm if it is relevant…yeah…to a degree.. unless they are being haughty…that doesn’t fly with me.
A religion isn’t impressive to me, it’s something you believe in and you shouldn’t believe in it to “impress” others.
So long as they use it accurately. I wouldn’t say I’m impressed though. I’d say more that I’m glad to see that someone backs their information with something. There’s no such thing as “our own answer”. We all get out answers from something outside of us.
Not at all.
No it annoys me.
Well, no – not really. If your question has something to do directly with The Bible – then I guess it would be alright. I think you need to be able to frame what you mean without quoting The Bible. It would show us that you actually understand what it means.
Personally, I’d take them quoting the Hichhiker’s Guide to the Galexy just as seriously. Well, maybe not, but definitly Tom Robbins. He has insights into life… the bible has insites into life… But no one’s been killed over Jitterbug Perfume, or Still Life with Woodpecker as far as I know.
I tend to be more inpressed with an original opinion based on a Biblical truth, maybe with a quote alongside. But there’s definitely nothing wrong with quoting the verse, as everything the Bible says is truth.
-Jared
usually. but only if it is relevant.
no
it doesn’t involve personal opinion – it’s just spewing off something belonging to someone else
ryc: he was found innocent, but the reality is, is that he was guilty – you can’t deny forensic evidence
ummmmm, no.
It’s good to answer a theological question with refrences in context as long as they aren’t making the refrence their answer, because then it isn’t really them answering, now is it? However, if I am in church and my pastor makes no connection to the bible, do I know that he is really teaching me the Word of God, or is he teaching me based off his personal opinion and what he ‘believes’? If so, then why am I there if I am searching for God, and not man? Man can do nothing for me. Depending on how that person uses those verses, if they are used correctly, then yes, it is good and accurate. But it isn’t our place to judge where they are in their spiritual walk if they aren’t.
Dan,
You’re kidding right?? I can’t stand it when people start preaching.
Candy
Using religion to answer a question isn’t impressive. That’s like not having your own answer to a question (it’s just stealing it from the Bible or Quran, or whatever.) Kind of lame, if you ask me
Yes. I’m impressed because they are devoted enough to find a suitable verse and share it with everyone that comes to your site, which is a lot of people. Its a good testimony.
yes i do.
Impressed? No, thats not the right word. It doesn’t impress me, but it doesn’t not impress me. It just is. And I’m okay with it.
nope because thats how alot of people find anwers to lifes questions
Scripture-slinging is easy. Real dialogue takes effort and requires risk-taking.
I’m not impressed but I am glad that people can still talk openly about their faith even when others answered this question with answers like ‘disgusted’ and ‘repulsed’.
Actually, yes I think it’s cool when people know their stuff that thoroughly
haha yeah I guess
It’s good because if someone has never heard about God, then it is a great way for them to hear what they need to hear
Disappointed. To rely on ad hominem, a book which has been edited throughout the years by innumerable scribes and editors and translators, and to take that as literal truth and force-feed it to others as such? Disappointing, and highly despicable.
Not one bit. Those people act pretentious.
Not so much “impressed”, but I tend to respect someone’s opinion more if they have a scriptural backup for it.
No, because even a non-Christian can do that. *I* can do that. It’s just memorization. I’m not impressed by people retaining things they read. I do that all the time.
impressed? if that is what they live, then no, it is their life. if they are quoting it to be sarcastic, no, because they don’t understand. what does it matter how people answer – so long as they are answering in the truth.
no
Not really- they probably just want to look smart anyway. But if it really fits the question, I’m definitely impressed.
I prefer a well-thought out opinion, and one that you yourself have devised… Bible verses are neither of which.
not at all
Not at all
i am a christian, so yes.
But I’d be so impressed if you commented me more Dan!!
That was chapter 2 of II Timothy that Arcane67 was quoting.
I’m not in that 10% *sniff*
no, it’s actually slightly offensive at times. not everyone here is christian.
Did you see the comment on my site today from the strange person who quoted lots of bible stuff at me
No. I am not impressed. However, this is no government–and I believe in free speech and expression. “I disagree with everything you say, but I will fight to death for your right to say it.”
In other words–if that is what you believe and you would like to answer the question via Bible verses, so be it.
Well he just came and pouted many paragraphs of hated I think I should catagorise it as towards people who do not believe in God. It wasn’t aimed at me but rather at someone who posted a comment on my site.
What are you implying? That someone knows the Bible well? Because as nice as the Bible is, people can look it up on the internet.
congratulations, you’re on the featured content list.
NO. Stop using the Bible as the answer to everything and use your own words to express how you feel.
Eh, somewhat.
Thank you This_Is_Important for pointing out I forgot to include the chapter. However, it was chapter 3, not 2, that I quoted.
It didn’t come via your site Dan, it came from somewhere else. It seems that this guy harasses someone who commented my post. She deleted his comments so he came to my site, amongst others to reply.
Sure!
no
I’d rather see original thought. Interpret the Bible verses, use your own words… *something*. Don’t just regurgitate what’s been fed down your throat during your years of Bible study.
I wonder about people who answer a question with any quote. It makes me wonder if that person is capable an original response.
not at all…it’s actually kind of stupid. I mean, the bible can be ripped apart and shredded and pieced back together to support or condemn anything. And it’s not an original answer either, which bothers me…not someone’s own words. They haven’t taken the time to think the problem over and come to their OWN conclusion…they have to steal someone else’s idea…xoxo Emily
if it’s a question of relevance, then it’s OK… but impressed… nah…
haha i have also, and obviously, i too have come back to posting. no doubt i probably will again this time.
I don’t know that “impressed” is the word I’d use, but I do appreciate and respect it. The Bible is Truth and it’s good to see people have a absolute standard by which they try to live and base their opinions.
Depends on the question. If the question is of a spiritual or a moral matter than I’m fine with it. However many of these people don’t realize that it is impossible to turn your life over 100% to God. I mean really, does he really care if you have Raisen Bran or Cornflakes for breakfast.
Usually, I don’t mind it. It reflects their world view more than anything else. People who quote Bible verses believe in absolutes with no room for comprimise. Sometimes though, this course of logic leads to sin because if you believe you are right because it was written 2000 years ago, you won’t ever think your interpretation may be flawed and thus keep yourself from repentance.
In the end I don’t have a problem with it. However caution should be used. Christians believe that the Word of God is a sword. Rev 1:16 describes the words of Jesus as a sword coming out of his mouth. If the Word of God is a sword, we should be careful how we weild it. Remember, He also said, “what you do unto the least of my brethern, you do unto me.”
dude, you have no idea how strict i am about safety. i rival my own damn mother.
if the scripture is not taken out of context
no.
No, usually sickened. And then I laugh at them. No offense meant towards religious folk, especially considering my best friend at school is quite religious, but whenever someone thinks God is going to give them all the answers I pity them and think they’re ridiculous. And are disgusted at how they warp some stupid book to their liking and trust it so much.
Quoting the bible doesn’t necessarily make them right. So, no.
I am always impressed when someone is able to use literature intelligently in discussion, whether it be the Bible or Beowulf.
Being a Christian, I am biased towards Bible verses, (ceter paribus (all other things being equal)) but I try not to let that bias interfere with my interpretation.
no, people need to think for themselves
very interesting question….honestly, most of the time (hate to say this) but I skip over that part when I read….pure honesty
BTW… I have a hunch that the reason you ask this is because of TheUnstained. His site needs shutdown. All he does is harass the Pagans community and give Christians like me a bad name. He thinks he is a good Christian because he talks w/o listening. All arrogance, no humility. No Christlike servant nature. I think he’s in for a few surprises in life.
It’s one of my goals in life to be able to randomly pull up bible verses. Even though I don’t think I’ve ever read the bible. Okay, scratch ‘think’. And I really have no plans to.
You have to have some respect for these people. The fact that they can do this. Like all those people who can quote Shakespeare or some other famous author or book. It’s the same with the Bible. But then you look at it and go ‘Hmm.. I wonder if this person would put as much effort into raising their family as they do reading and memorizing the bible… ‘
I’m rarely impressed with anyone’s answers. Am I supposed to be? Most answers seem to be tossed off without much thought or reasoning.
If someone is claiming to answer from a Christian perspective, then their answer should be supportable by scripture; whether someone chooses to quote scripture or not makes no difference to me.
Reading quotes from scriptures besides the bible would interest, but not impress, me.
no, it really seems like a cop out to answer a question with somebody elses words. Just say what YOU think. Don’t use the bible as a crutch.
It doesn’t impress me, It just bothers me.
I hear it all the time from my parents, from religious friends.. Yes, I’m a Christian, and I know the verses, but I am not going to go spouting them off on someone elses site. *unless you ask something that you WANT a biblical answer to*
*A*
If someone thinks s/he is making a point by quoting the bible, then great. If someone can make a good point without it, then great. It seems too easy, though, simply to rely on a verse in place of original thought. It might be more persuasive if someone says, “I think X because I believe Book chapter:verse, and that is applicable because ___” I’m too analytical, though, so I’m the wrong person to ask.
I have never noticed any Bible verses but I do not always take the time to read all the comments.
Nope.
eh depends mostly no
no, not really
91st!
“quoting anything should be used in proper context and for a reason” Myself 3:21
I’m not impressed because I don’t take some scripture literally. I do, however think that it is improtant to know the scripture. If you can’t quote scripture and you have strong beliefs and good reasons…I may even respect you even more.
Hmmm, for the most part…no, it doesn’t impress me. Including a verse with commentary…yes, that impresses me. But I can’t stand drive-by scripture throwers.
Night night Dan, off to bed now
No.
no. Not that there is any problem with doing so, but it does not impress me any more than quoting Shakespear or Robespierre
Yup, it’s hard to apply Bible verses to everyday life, if you can memorize all that and quote the Bible, I’m impressed. ALL YOU NON-CHRISTIANS, YOU DO REALIZE THAT THE BIBLE IS REALLY THICK, RIGHT? AND IF YOU CAN QUOTE SOMETHING FROM A BOOK THAT THICK, that’s impressive
No. But then it says in the bible… “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord and has made the Lord his hope and confidence.” (Jeremiah 17:7) Who am I to argue that? lol
well if its an enlightening quote sure.. but if its not. then eh. then again im not the omg im so impressed sort
Not in the least
Pfff.
No.
I don’t know about ‘impressed’, but since the Bible is our foundation if it is applicable and used in the right way then yes.
Isn’t that people trying to prove how smart they are? Seems like a form of pride to me.
I’m not really “impressed” exactly, I’m more encouraged by it, and it makes me happy to see people keeping Gods word close to their heart and knowing it well enough that they can apply it to everyday situations, because that is what it is there for. ^^
not impressed as much as… happy? that people turn to god for answers to questions of morality and such. I do not like it though when they minipulate the verse out of context….
Not really.
i dont read those responses…ever
i don’t mind
Sickened.
Looks like you have more NO answers then yes. wonder if that’s a good thing? If a person has taken the time to “memorize” something, I’m happy it was from the word of God.
no. because it’s like they are saying the bible is the answer to everything, and it isn’t.
Sometimes… but I do hate when people use the bible as a weapon, and when they take verses out of context. People even do this at church, and it drives me nuts!! Somebody will have a study guide for bible study printed out with some verses to prove a certain point… I’ll go to the verse and it won’t even be an entire sentence! It doesn’t always mean it’s being used in an improper way, but for goodness sake, read the whole sentence please…
People should see that the bible is truth. The most true thing in this life and I would have MUCH more confidence in the validity of the bible than my “own original words” Because the Bible is the WORD OF GOD. The things we say are the words of humans. who are you going to place more value and confidence in. God or man? Man who is weak, sinful, naiive, and oblivious? or God , who is all-knowing, the creator of the earth, the author of life the righteous amazing loving powerful God that he is? So I think people need to respect us for quoting the bible in these types of discussions, because if we feel in our hearts that love and desire for God’s truth, then the Bible might as well be our own words.
<3
ignorant question, like so many others… why don’t you ask now why so many people choose to bash Christianity because it makes them uncomfortable… I think that THAT would be a good question to ask sometime…
I happen to like A_67′s answer to your question…
impressed? generally, i must say yes. i’m impressed that there are actually people in this world still confident enough to share the christian faith. i see it as an act of worship. that’s what god calls us to do, right? if that means answering a question on a site with a bible verse, then by all means, let me have a chance too!
“Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord,O my soul! While I live I will praise the lord:I will sing praises to my God while I have my being. Do not put your trust in princes, Nor in a son of man, in whomthere is no help. His spirit departs, he returns to earth; in that very day his plans shal perish.”
keep on praising the Lord! love.
I wouldn’t say I’m impressed by it. If used correctly, God’s teachings can provide a perspective or explanation that can help minister to others. Even as a Christian, I often find it interesting to read how others interpret the Bible in response to daily issues. Biblical knowledge should not be something used in an attempt to impress others, though.
Not when their answer has nothing to do with your question. It seems kinda like they’re showing off. Plus, anyone can memorize; it’s not that hard.
how do you get so many props?
I’m not UNimpressed.
Looking at On a Sill, that is reaction formation. Criticizing others because they’re uncomfortable or struggling with the issue themselves. Hehe… psychology…
If people say we should think for ourselves, what is “ourselves” or “me”? If you want to find answers by yourself, that answer probably comes from someone else. That would technically not be yourself. If you do find it purely by yourself, I’m sure someone else has gone through it too so no matter what, it’s probably not original. Sometimes quotes is a good way to express our ideas. We quote (sometimes) because it’s fine just the way it is and it’s true.
And just like everyone else, sometimes. Depends on the point they’re trying to prove and relevance.
if it’s a Bible question
No.
I’m interested in knowing what “they” think. I can read the Bible myself. I would at least like to see them put the Bible quotes in their own words…like they had processed what they had read and this was their conclusion or something.
Do you know what I mean?
Only if its used in context…but I really don’t like things shoved down my throat.
Not at all.
Sometimes, quoting the Truth is always good as long as it’s used in the appropriate context. I wouldn’t say I’m impressed but I’d venture to say that it adds to any post when there’s an explanation to go along with it. The Bible has been working for this long.
~Pesky
Besides…faith isn’t something you should try to “impress” someone with. If someone is slinging verses around so people will think they are a good Christian, then they have issues.
I’m not UNimpressed, I just don’t see what the big deal is by someone memorizing verses (or memorizing ANYTHING, for that matter). I have lots of the Bible memorized because of Sunday School and whatnot, but that’s just because I have an excellent memory. Not because I’m trying to impress anyone.
no…usually i think they are just abusing the verse to prove their own point.
I am usually impressed when people can quote verses that apply well to a situation. I wish I could do the same!
No, I’m annoyed; way to regurgitate that crap that just ends up being wasted bandwidth. Not everyone defines their beliefs according to the Bible, so it’s useless contribution.
If it works, go for it
no. my beliefs of the bible are different than their’s, apparently
I wonder what your readers think about interracial relationships?
Just because someone doesn’t believe in it doesn’t mean it’s not true or applicable. I’m a Christian, but I also think “An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind” “Be the change” -Ghandi “Life is suffering” -Buddhism
Actually, sir, the question I ask is one of substance and relevance, not merely reactional ( as a you are a student, I would almost expect you to realize this)… when Dan chooses to ask a “controversial” question, there is a divide, usually with the more vocally liberal commenters demeaning those who are more vocally conservative… I think that the question should be reciprocated in a fashion to ask ” are you impressed with those who, when disagreeing with another commenter, choose to demean said commenters beliefs and standards?”… perhaps that is a better way of stating what I said earlier?… Meanwhile… I have noticed that in the majority of the commenters who DO give you verses, Dan, they are not doing it for self pomposity, they are doing it do back themselves up… not for show. but, I suppose that that could be considered a perception…
If in context and appropriate, I am impressed by their willingness to be open with their faith. And I do believe that the Bible can answer most, if not all, of life’s questions.
Not sure.
Impressed? No, Put off? No… If it’s something that makes since to them then it’s their choice on rather they put something in their own words, use a famous quote or quote a bible verse… It all have to do with relevance… Does what they say answer your question or is it just spouting to spout.
You talking to me? You talking to me? If you are, apparently I’m still lost.
Have a nice rest of the day though!
I should stop making conversations with comments.
no!
Not really. Anybody can quote a book…any book. The question is, can you apply it or are you just being a smart ass?
Not in the slightest.
Not impressed by you.
Not in the least bit.
yeah, definitely.
except for the one where the guy was talking about the bible and abortion.
that was not cool, and kinda stupid.
i wanted to punch that guy in the face.
hmmm…now i’m wondering if that was real or just a dream….
sorry, forgot to capitalize the ‘B’ in Bible.
Only if they use the verse as an accent to a point they’re making with their own words. When they answer a post with only a Bible verse, it’s like they don’t have their own opinion, they have to use an opinion out of the Bible. An opinion someone else came up with.
ha! well atleast they are expressing their opinion, either religious or not….
Though I am christian, I think it’s sad.
I think our opinions should be based on our gut feeling and passion, not what the bible tells us our feelings should be.
Im impressed…that religious people can be so pretentious.
not really but if thats what they believe, who am i to judge them… so i guess ya for them standing up for their faith
Sure. I think it’s pretty cool to see someone who understands that the Bible is still relevant to our lives and issues today.
Using Bible quotes to make people think better of you is a misuse of the Bible. However, if you’re trying to bring insight to the story or question or whatever, go right on ahead.
How many people answered this w/ a Bible quote?
hmm not really. its easy to quote a verse from the bible without really thinking about the question. i’m much more impressed when someone derives their answer from the holy book but phrases it in their own intelligent words.
not really. nope, not at all.
depends on the question
Not impressed, but I do like to see those type of replies to be in the context of the question itself. At least they are trying to give something back to you (that’s positive).
no cause its simpley memorization
Didn’t notice that they do that. I only read your other comments if they’re on the same page I posted on and have a cute girl for a profile pic. Also, I look for Holly Peterson’s comments and read those because she’s such a cult of personality, you have to worship the Holly.
No, not really.
You were just setting yourself up for a religion-slam-fest with this question.
LOL@Arcane67
disgusted
I wouldn’t say impressed, but I think it’s interesting that they go through all that to answer a question on xanga. I’d be more impressed if they live what the Bible says day to day.
It is good to know they know what they’re talking about and can support their opinions. A lot of people say Christians don’t know what they’re talking about and can’t support their opinions with what the Bible says, but when they actually do, they think the Christians are being obnoxious and preachy. Some people are simply never satisfied.
From the book of Tony, Chapter 13, verse 4:
“No.”
I think that says enough.
~t~
am i impressed with people quoting the bible? not so much do i quote the bible? yes do i do it to impress people? not at all do i do it cuz i can’t come up with a coherent, well thought out response myself? no
i quote the bible because sometimes what i want to say was said WAY better by someone else and i’d like to use their words to emphasize my point….which is the purpose of quotes of any kind as i understand it….just the fact that the book has been around as long as it has implies that there must be some truth to it and that it’s somewhat eloquent in it’s writing style….
to the people who “refuse” to read posts with bible quotes, to those who are “sickened”, “annoyed”, or “offended” by it – have you actually read the bible? hard to judge something you haven’t even opened for yourself….kinda confuses me to hear someone say they’re “offended” by “anything” from the bible – what part of “you shall not murder” offends you exactly?
people are entitled to their opinions….let’s try to base those opinions on something intelligent tho, k?
And RYC…I’d send you the link to the place I have it hosted at so you could download it…but I like the site traffic too much. LOL
Depending on the question…and the answer. If they’re twisting scripture to make it fit (as many do, unfortunately), then no. If the question can be simply answered by it, then sure…that’s fine. God is the answer to the question, afterall.
no- you can memorize all the verses you want, but it’s the way one chooses to live their life for God that impresses me.
no, not necessarily
nope.
Why shouldn’t Christians quote the Bible? I’ve heard other things quoted. And contrary to what some may believe, Christians quote the Scriptures because they believe it, and not just to “throw” some quick answer down. Why shouldn’t Christians believe the Bible as much as you believe in what you do?
And as for being original, none of you non-Christians are original. The things you say you believe I have heard all of my life. What’s original about quoting your parents or unbelieving friends? That’s better than the Bible?
As for the annoying part, I cannot speak for any other Christian on the face of the earth, but I truly get annoyed with all of the put–downs I find from all of these wise, oringinal, intelligent non-Christians. Instead of seeing this site as a place to voice your disgust of Christians, why don’t you just answer the questions?
I think it would be unfair for me to start commenting on how other people comment on someone else’s site. What makes you ask?
not at all, it annoys me and just reminds me how big religion is…..im not religious.
And now, I’ll answer the question: Yes. Impressed and grateful. Those are the answers that build me up and let me know that someone cares. I love God with all my heart. It is always good to hear His Word quoted, even if it’s not in context with the question. I hope all of you Bible–quoters out there will keep it coming. I thrive on it.
NEVER.
One more. I keep hearing that “everyone isn’t a Christian, so they don’t want to hear the Bible quoted.”
Well, surprise, everyone isn’t an agnostic or atheist or who knows what. We are on here to voice what we, all of us, think of a certain question. What I hear is that a lot of unbelievers in God want us Christians to voice anything but what we believe. Isn’t that censure??
No.
i should expand: i think it comes across as arrogant, even though it is likely not meant that way. it’s like a slap in the face. “believe this sucka”. it doesn’t come across as intelligent conversation based on the topic. i appreciate more people who say what they think - if what they think comes out of Scripture, that’s cool. but just quoting Scripture and not interacting with it doesn’t really show that. but i’d be equally irritated if someone answered all your questions by quoting george washington or mother theresa or ronald mcdonald or something.
not at all
Quoting a Bible verse is like quoting anything or anyone else…It must be done when coupled with intelligent thought. Otherwise, it is just fluff.
sorry the bible is what I follow and I love to quote it.
have a good day.
nope
Yes, it shows that the Bible isn’t some dusty book of the olden days. It is the source of wisdom, clarity, and faith.
Have lovely days, all of you!
If ‘impressed’ and ‘creeped out’ are synonyms, then yes.
ElGreeko, no need to apologize, no way, I am not ashamed of the Gospel or His name, w/ Holy Hands lifted High, I praise the Name of Jesus Christ, woo yeah!
…gee, I just quoted a song…
No, but I am not impressed when anyone quotes anything or anyone.
I wish I had Bittersunday’s memory. When I quote a scripture, I have to go to considerable trouble to do it because I have to look it up first. Then I have to type it from the Bible word for word. It takes a lot of time. I wonder how many other Christians have to go to this amount of trouble to quote Scripture? I never quote the Bible on here because of this. So now, you can say that there are slothful Christians too lazy to quote the Bible. Wouldn’t put it past a lot of you atheists.

funny thing Hillary Clinton ( yeh, I know you like her) tried to quote the story of the good Samaritan today…she didn’t get it right though…
People probably quote scripture to make a point, much like Hillary was trying to do.
Well, nobody else who gives answers on here is able to cite where their information came from.
The question is, who do you believe more? Someone who researches, quotes, and cites their sources, or someone who just makes things up.
I’m not so much impressed by originality, but more by effort.
If it is originality everyone wants, then I will start answering questions using that idea.
So my original, non-quoted, unsourced answer is: Desk Lamp
Well, I couldn’t say yes or no, because it has already been said, so it wouldn’t be original. Happy now?
yeah
I know the bible well, so I guess I’m not impressed when people answer them, I think its cool though!
no. but i’m biased cuz i don’t read anything from the bible. it just sounds like they’re spitting something out that isn’t even their own thought, so it means nothing to me. plus, if you’re trying to reach a wider audience that includes non-christians, why don’t you speak in a language that everyone understands?
Personally, I have a very offense opinion when ti comes to believing in Christianity. I sure wouldn’t want to use “fighting words” as the Supreme Court or Yosamity Sam might say. People who quote the bible are very devoted and assume it’s the be all, end all of any debate. S’like they think it’s the Word of God or something. Let’s leave it at that.
sometimes, it really does depend on the situation.
No.
Oh yah if you know you should feel free to share it!
NEVER.
Not impressed, no, that’s the wrong word
I like reading bible verses, though. It’s the word of God!
People answer your questions w/ Bible verses?
i’m impressed when people demonstrate their own knowledge of things- google notwithstanding
No. It’s nothing but lines from a book regurgitated by people who can’t formulate their own feelings and views.
RYC:: Aw that sucks. I would have liked to know your result!
yea, not really. bible verses, in my opinion, make you look like you don’t have the capability of thinking or speaking for yourself.
No. Because those seem to be the people who answer everything with religion, as if they don’t have opinions of their own.
I was going to say “No, more like disgusted” but it seems like enough people covered that.
It’s just as bad as when people refer to the the bible as “The Truth”. Facts are the truth, not fictional writing. People really need to find other things to depend on.
If it is used in the right context then I like that they have something to back up their thoughts and beliefs…not sure it “impresses” me really…challenges…intrigues…but not really impresses…
It just shows more that many answers are found in the Bible . I’m more glad and happy to see people answer in verses than impressed, if they use it right.
not necessarily impressed, but delighted…….
Interesting that a personal opinion is regarded as more valuable than a 2,000 year old book which is still very relevant.
Who told all these people that believing in something means you can not think for yourself? I reject social studies classes.
I love kellenlewis1′s answers! So, I’ll just say Ditto.
Well no.
Especially when you can use biblegateway.com to search for anything in the entire Bible.
But it is good that people would rather rely on the God-breathed Scripture than their own thinking.
If a Bible passage is relevant to the question then it is fine. If one has to take the Bible out of context to answer the question (i.e. Jesus is love, so we can’t say that someone who is sinning is wrong) then it is a problem.
No.
this has definitely cemented my thoughts that the internet is for liberals.
yes…i like it
Last! yeah
Not one bit.
Am I impressed? That is a difficult question. I am not impressed by people who just throw their knowledge of the Bible around in inappropriate ways, and I am not impressed by over zealous Bible beaters who think they have a personal mission to spread the Gospel to the whole world.
I am impressed by a proper use of Bible verses when they are properly used within an appropriate context.
In general, I’ve found that those most offended by a Bible quotation are those who know the least about the Bible.
I don’t have time to read all the comments …. so don’t know
Not at all, I personally find Bible answers show a lack of ability for people to think on their own.
Now if your post is about Bible verses, then I guess it would work, but in response to most anything else, its just a sign of stupidity.
Yes, as long as it is stated properly.
Am I impressed? No. However, I am glad when I see that there are some people that can reference or quote Bible passages and use them in context, remaining true to the text, and being relevant to the topic.
Well, no, not really. I find it kind of annoying actually.
Eva.
impressed? depends on the difficulty of the question and obscurity of the verse. heartened? usually, unless they’re twisting the meaning
God is everything.
In the end, 2012, they will see.
Hedonism.
I’m truly amazed at the number of replies from people who feel that quoting the Bible indicates a lack of original thought or that it somehow demonstrate that I (or others) do so without ever considering other viewpoints.
There have been many times I have replied to Dan’s questions by first quoting either a definition to one or more of the terms in the question to help define why I believe what I do. There are other times I will make reference to material I have read (other than the Bible) to help shed light on the subject matter. Is quoting other sources equally stupid, unoriginal or annoying?
How many people here who chant this “unoriginal” mantra vote straight along their political party line during elections simply because they are too uninterested to invest themselves of the time to learn more?
How many people here who yell “NOT AN ORIGINAL THOUGHT!” go out and buy birthday, wedding, holiday, congratulations, condolences and any other type of card that contains some sort of prewritten phrase or poetry because it expresses what they feel?
Who here has taken the time for every entry they have put in someone’s yearbook to come up with original expressions and memories? “To a nice guy/girl I met this year in English/Spanish/Math class” sure can’t be one, can it?
Do those of you who imply that your thoughts have all be reasoned out without the crutch of using the words of others have favorite songs? Songs you enjoy because the words mean something to you. Lyrics that speak to you? Words that you relate to? Your emotions reacting to the story within sung in a way that expresses clearly what you feel?
If a person is a Christian and believes that the Bible is sacred, then that person should study it. It makes sense that they study it. To not study it and analyze it would be the stupid thing and would show a lack of ability for people to think for themselves.
I find myself reevaluating my beliefs again and again. I sometimes wonder if what I believe, religiously and in other matters, is true or not. I try to look at things from several angles. I allow myself to consider, “What if I’m wrong?” I don’t simply take what I was exposed to as a child and let it lead me down my life with blinders on. I believe what I do because I think about it and draw my own conclusions, not instead of.
Not at all…be original for cripes sake.
Since God’s WORD is all I really care about, YES!
(((((( GRANDMA HUGS ))))))
Lori
Yes I am impressed, and shouldn’t I be? You’ve titled this site Theologians Cafe…should you even be surprised? There is nothing wrong with someone backing up their opinion with their beliefs, since those are beliefs drawn from biblical verses then there is also no reason for them NOT to put them on there as providing the context for which they draw their beliefs. If that disgusts people where do you draw your beliefs from? Where do you back them from? Should I be disgusted at the sources for your beliefs?
“Wisdom begins with respect for the Lord, and understanding begins with knowing the Holy One.” Proverbs 9:10 NIV
no. i find it obnoxious.
no, just write the verse out
If they use the verse correctly and it applies well to the sitution.
Didn’t actually notice.
it doesnt make any diff. to me.
No.
no, i’m sorry – should i be? if it is their religion, i would expect at least a passing knowledge of the Bible, both OT and NT if they are Christian, and at least the Torah if they are Jewish. just as i would expect a working knowledge of the Qu’ran from a Muslim, etc.
Not really, it all depends on the question.
That’s the #1 reason I subscribed to you—How do we actually use the Bible in everyday life?? You ask ,and the people deliver! Praise God!!
ALWAYS CONSIDER THE SOURCE, AND THE BIBLE ISNT A VALID ONE IN MY EYES. THE BIBLE IS LIKE COLD READING PEOPLE, ITS ALL PERCEPTION.
I like it.
Not especially. I usually give my answer to a question and then offer a Biblical reference if I see it as appropriate and beneficial.
At least that is they way I hope I do things!
L,r
depends on if its out of context, and if its being used to make a point that is contradictory to the Bible.
And I’m not impressed if somebody used a very well known verse*ahemJOHN3:16ahem*
wow at the number of comments for this question.
for me it depends on how it’s used.
No, because people should say what they really think. Not what someone else made up.
sometimes
Well. Not sure if impressed would be the right word. But people answer with what defines them. And for some people the bible defines who they are and all their opinions come from the bible. Wow. a slightly loaded answer.
theologian = a specialist in the study of religious faith, practice, and experience
seems like a good place to quote
Almost as much as people who answer questions with passages from Dr. Seuss books like “The Cat in the Hat” or “Green Eggs and Ham” I suppose I’m more impressed by those since they rhyme and are actually entertaining.
Pompous blowhards who try and have a passage for every life situation are forgetting that the Bible was written by civic leaders with personal agendas way back when, speicifically to bring order to the chaotic behaviour of their brethern/sisteren.
RYC: I do like you Dan, you have a way of growing on a fellow. Like that kid in high school that always got whapped in the butt with towels in the locker room.
Yes, I am impressed when people correctly use scripture in a reply. It shows that they’ve put off their worldly thinking and put on Biblical thinking.
Now, if the verse is used out of context, then that also speaks a lot about where they are at.
p.s. The Bible is not “made up” and there is no such thing as “original thought” other than what you have from being made in God’s “original” image.
New thoughts? There is nothing new under the sun (and that’s scripture, by the way).
absolutely not.
No I want to hear what they think, not waht a book thinks
Nope, unless the question is, “Where do I find ______ in the Bible?” I believe that the Bible does hold the truth, but then so should we.
No. Because it’s been my experience that those who spend all their time quoting the bible, are often those who don’t live by its rules.
i wouldn’t say i would be ”impressed” per se….if the verse really related though and the person told me something that i didn’t already know that would be helpful. i don’t think impressed is the word i would use.
Wow! These people can actually judge a Christian’s life by reading what he/she writes in these comments! Or maybe all you atheists have a crystal ball that travels with you. For one thing, you’re reading. Any expression given the printed word is probably your own. So when you start calling Bible-quoters “blowhards”, guess who you’re talking about! Sure, some of the comments will be understood the same way by most people, but you atheists understand Bible-quoters one way — know-it-all preachers who are probably hypocrites at best and who reallly have hidden agendas (like you do) and are hardly trustworthy. Oh yeah–and we are hardly original. And you think you are???(to be read with a loud, boisterous laugh of unbelief that some people can be so stupid and still remember to breathe)
Almost always, no. People can prooftext practically anything with the Bible.
Very.
[ariana]
NEVER!
i don’t know about impressed, but it makes me glad that people read the Bible and take time to know and remember what it says.
If correctly used, yeah. Application of scripture is never a bad thing…when used correctly.
Well, being that your blog handle is thetheologianscafe, and being that a theologian is someone who studies the nature of God and religious truth, I’d somewhat expect it. Call me crazy.
yes ,i love to read the bible its great to meet other people who and love god
Not at all, to me it shows their ignorance. To me, the bible was not something to be taken verbatum. Its just basic standards to live your life by. And they are also ignoring the fact that maybe not everyone is a Christian. Which I find very rude and intolerant.
The devil can cite Scripture for his purpose.
–Shakespeare
I wouldn’t say impressed exactly. I’m just kind of glad that a person would know the Bible well enough to be able to correctly present an answer to a certain question.
I chuckled a little…..i mean…can’t they think on their own?
the question is, does it bother you??
when they quote a lie? nope, not really.
“the bible did not arrive by fax from heaven.”
the da vinci code.
Depends on if the person uses them in the right context and at the right time. If so then yes
Then again I am not impresses that they use a quote from the bible. Anybody can do that. I am impresses that they are confident enough to speak out for what they believe in.
A lot of people in this world wouldn’t do that because they are afraid that they may offend someone and just want to avoid an argument.
“And I Said Nothing,”
“First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out – because I was not a communist
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out – because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the labor leaders, and I did not speak out – because I was not a labor leader.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out – because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn’t speak up, because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me – and there was no one left to speak out for me.”

Peeshaw, everyone’s got a bible…go to any doctor’s office and you’ll find a little children’s illustrated bible story book.
Nah, you wanna float my boat quote something like ‘Asimov’s Guide to the Bible’, or like other people have brought up, THGTTG
I think I would have to agree with the last person who posted…
~Ash7-Ashley
Opps….Yikes theres a lot of peeps on here….I was agree with JAM…lol
No. I find it extremely irritating and pretentious.
People answer with bible verses? SWEET!
No.
People should take some time to think and use their own words. Even if they’re going to quote something, at least preface it with “This reminds me of something I read in the Bible. Here’s a quote.”
x__Stephany
I think it’s odd that any person would be “disgusted” or “repulsed.” I almost think that it is going against God to say anything bad about the Word of God. By answering a question with a Bible verse, we are actually answering with humility, as we are depending on The Holy Trinity instead of our humanly nature. I could back that up with a Bible verse, but it might “repulse” someone.
Comments (294)
Disgusted.
no
depends on the question
Depends on whether or not the verses are appropriate for the situation.
Not really.
Yup, if it’s in context b/c the Bible is the Truth.
That’s a loaded question, Dan.
repulsed.
no i’m impressed when people answer questions for themselves.
Sometimes, yes!
depends….but sometimes it’s out of context
I’m impressed when people know the Bible well enough to apply verses to a topic. I say this for both people who are Christians as well as those who research enough to try and present a counter-argument.
12th
no, people being able to spout out bible verses does not show their reveance, it can, but most time people dont live their life the same way as the bible verses the quote tell them to.
have a wonderful day
Michael
To rely on ad hominem,
a book which has been
edited throughout the
years by innumerable
scribes and editors and
translators, and to
take that as literal
truth and force-feed it
to others as such?
Disappointing, and
highly despicable.
91st!
“quoting anything should be used in proper context
and for a reason”
Myself 3:21
<3
If they are applicable I like reading them- but I wouldn’t say I’m impressed any slightly computer literate monkey can use biblegateway 1 Kings 10:3 3 Solomon answered all her questions; nothing was too hard for the king to explain to her. http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=11&chapter=10&verse=3&version=31&context=verse
No. Unless it’s relevant to the question.
Only when the truth is spoken with love.
not impressed as much as… happy? that people turn to god for answers to questions of morality and such. I do not like it though when they minipulate the verse out of context….
Not really.
i dont read those responses…ever
i don’t mind
Sickened.
no. because it’s like they are saying the bible is the answer to everything, and it isn’t.
Actually, sir, the question I ask is one of substance and relevance, not merely reactional ( as a you are a student, I would almost expect you to realize this)… when Dan chooses to ask a “controversial” question, there is a divide, usually with the more vocally liberal commenters demeaning those who are more vocally conservative… I think that the question should be reciprocated in a fashion to ask ” are you impressed with those who, when disagreeing with another commenter, choose to demean said commenters beliefs and standards?”…
perhaps that is a better way of stating what I said earlier?…
Meanwhile… I have noticed that in the majority of the commenters who DO give you verses, Dan, they are not doing it for self pomposity, they are doing it do back themselves up… not for show. but, I suppose that that could be considered a perception…
~t~
am i impressed with people quoting the bible? not so much
do i quote the bible? yes
do i do it to impress people? not at all
do i do it cuz i can’t come up with a coherent, well thought out response myself? no
i quote the bible because sometimes what i want to say was said WAY better by someone else and i’d like to use their words to emphasize my point….which is the purpose of quotes of any kind as i understand it….just the fact that the book has been around as long as it has implies that there must be some truth to it and that it’s somewhat eloquent in it’s writing style….
to the people who “refuse” to read posts with bible quotes, to those who are “sickened”, “annoyed”, or “offended” by it – have you actually read the bible? hard to judge something you haven’t even opened for yourself….kinda confuses me to hear someone say they’re “offended” by “anything” from the bible – what part of “you shall not murder” offends you exactly?
people are entitled to their opinions….let’s try to base those opinions on something intelligent tho, k?

I’m not sure…..
Yes
Sure why not, as long as you know them.
yea, not really. bible verses, in my opinion, make you look like you don’t have the capability of thinking or speaking for yourself.
It just shows more that many answers are found in the Bible

Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out – because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the labor leaders, and I did not speak out – because I was not a labor leader.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out – because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn’t speak up, because I was a Protestant.

I could back that up with a Bible verse, but it might “repulse” someone.
are they a talmid?
not even close
