I was watching American Idol the other day with my family. I never watched this show until a week or two ago. But now I am kind of interested in it. My second son was sitting down and watching American Idol and he asked an important question. He asked, “Have we ever voted on American Idol?” I thought this would be a good moment to teach my children about democracy. I told him, “Of course we have never voted on American Idol. When millions of people vote, your vote is worthless.”
I know there will be those who point to the presidential election of 2000. But even in Florida, the vote was decided by 500 votes or so. And who really knows how many votes were never counted. Even if I lived in Florida in 2000, my vote would have not made one candidate win over the other.
Is voting a waste of time?
