not at all safer. just faster and easier to avoid tan lines.
NO WAY DUDE!
they’re both horribley bad for you
so no.
Nope
well I don’t know all the scientific stuff
No!
no, if anything, it’s worse.
No…both are bad, tho i do tan outside. tanning in a bed is soooo frikin bad for ur skin. but i like to lay in the sun, not for the purpose of getting tan, but just because it feels good.
I don’t know enough about both to give you a answer. I’ll just say that anything in moderation is not lethal.
Tanning beds scare me ever since I saw “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” when I was like 5 or 6
No way!! Even in the salons, there are huge health posters that say “WARNING: Tanning in beds is NOT safer than tanning outside!! Health risks are real!”
No.
not safer just easier.. you are still subjecting yourself to ultraviolet light, and at a closer range too!
it’s a different type of ultraviolet light, but both have their risks. I guess I’d rather tan outdoors, because I like sunshine, not lamps.
nope.
no y dont u ever comment us back gosh freakin idiot
neither is safe for you…you get skin cancer each way. i think outside is a tad safer…b/c the sun/UV rays are coming from a further distance away Kelly
It can actually be worse, as you’re covered front and back in the rays wearing a bikini (or naked if you’re like some) that are very close to you at that moment, and some people are in those beds various times a week for half an hour.
no, they’re both bad for you, just use sunblock and do it FOR FREE naturally with the sun, but be sure to slather on the sunblock
ick. no.
sun is natural, tanning beds are scary.
No way.
I think it’s worse. Even if it’s safer, you don’t get to enjoy being outside. It’s basically like taking a nap on the stove. What’s the freakin’ point?
I know a lot of people argue the beds are better better because you are regulating the amount of UV you’re exposing yourself to, but in reality you’re still exposed either way and put yourself at a higher chance for cancer. Not to mention, there’s that notion that it’s “safe”, so people go tanning more. So I’d say less safe only because people seem less careful
I think both are actually probably just as bad with their various pros and cons.
Why not use one of those tanning lotions? (a fake-bake, if you will?)
*A*
I learned in Micro-Biology that its like laying in a microwave….or food dehydrator….mmm mmm mmm human jerky.
o GOD no. the only good effects i see from tanning beds is that it helps you from getting burned if you are outside for long hours at a time.
no way. its totally been proven its worse for you.
The human body has no notion that it is receiving damaging ultraviolet radiation from some source other than the sun. Physics, biology, and chemistry just set to work without any reference whatsoever to the brain’s ridiculous rationalizations.
no.
no way
Maybe a little, if done in moderation.
..if you say “yes”, you need your brain evaluated. Tanning beds are worse ‘cos the UV rays are RIGHT THERE.
no its much more dangerous
no
ryc: yeah i know. it’s just a demonstration of glory over ethics. made me sick when i read it.
definately not. it’s been scientifically proven that it’s worse for you.
No, tanning beds are worse.
matters how much you like siring your internal organs. Rare, med rare, medium, done?
Definitely NOT. It’s worse.
any UV ray is bad
Do you burn or do you not burn? It doesn’t really matter where.
But real tans look better than fake tans.
no
No idea.
Trying not to think about tanning, I’m a redhead.
noooo…..
uv rays = cancer = death = most of the time
but. beds and outside are pretty much the same.
though personally,
i think the sun is better because it’s ‘all natural’
or whatever.
it’s just better
feels better
nicer too….
Well … less chance of a tree falling on you.
they are worse
What does it matter? Tanning is gross. Destruction of skin cells and the protective reactions. GREAT FUN.
By no means, no!!!
Both are pretty unsafe
Don’t know. Wouldn’t think so.
no, natural all the way.
My mom doesn’t think so. But I don’t think it really matters. I think it may be worse…but not that much more harmful.
No, the sun in reasonable amounts is good for you, anything made by man is NOT as good as God’s creation.
No. While too much sunshine can be bad, real sunlight is better than fake tanning.
Iie. Hindi. No.
No, I think it’s worse, even though I know that they’re really about the same. That doesn’t make sense, I’m sure. :p
No. It’s probably worse, as FireWithinArian said.
NO
!~nicole~!
(although each can cause skin cancer)
Either way you are still baking yourself. Tanning is bad. Period. Fake tanners can look just as real, and provide some protection against UV rays. Does anyone really want to be 30 and looking like they are 60? No.
thanks…and in response to the question, i think tanning period is dangerous. air brush is the way to go. all the look, none of the cancer.
i think i’ve only read two “yes” answers! what a question!
and i agree. it is sooo much worse. my college biology teacher once told us that when you tan in a bed, you and your skin cells basically become a bag of popcorn in a microwave put on a too high setting… eventually the bag/skin cells will pop, burn, melt, and/or explode.
only if you like being a prune…I don’t care what tanning people say too much sun is bad for your skin…I say pile n the sunblock and try to avoid skin cancer…
No, they are far more harsher, and you expose more skin as well.
I like my white skin! my answere is “NO”
NO
safer? nooo. People shouldnt go to tanning salons period.
I think vice-versa.
My primary question: why tan at all?
no, tanning beds are a danger, too much ultraviolet light can be dangerous on the skin. When someone is outside @ least they control the amout of light they want. personally I don’t tan *malanoma” runs in my family. I burn… so yeah theres my 2 cents!
<3
haha…there’s no safer one
i think it’s…kind of..icky when people go tanning a lot, you can totally tell that they fake-bake, and then their skin looks like leather, and it turns a funny texture, i dont wanna look like that!!
natural is always better than technology.
um, hell no, theres no way i would ever pay for skin cancer.
no, its even scientifically proven it’s more harmful… first 100!
neither is better… you’ll just end up with skin cancer if you do it so much. my mom’s a doctor… she’s seen the cases.
My skin doesn’t like either. I’ve been to a tanning bed once, and I broke out on my chest with a sun poisoning type stuff. I quite trying to tan years ago
Deborah MacFarlane, MD, associate professor of dermatology and a Mohs surgeon at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston states that tanning beds are worse than the sun, for the simple fact that so many young people use them to tan and be with the “in” crowd. MacFarlane “says that many of the young people she sees with skin cancer have used tanning beds…. One woman in her 20′s had five basal cell skin cell cancers on her front and back in the same areas she’d been darkening at a tanning salon. Another young patient had been using a tanning bed to get bronzed for a friend’s wedding. Although she says this is only anecdotal evidence, Dr. MacFarlane discovered two ‘really nasty melanomas on her torso, exactly in the areas she’d been tanning, and they were deep. When you remove a melanoma, you have to take out a large amount of skin, and you have to go all the way down to the muscle. She was a pretty girl. So much for looking good for the wedding.’ “
This was in June 2006 Reader’s Digest. I never try to tan. Like mlangel12006, melanoma runs in the family, and my aunt had a squamous cell skin cancer cut from her forearm, with 16 stitches. My father had several melanomas cut from his arms, the only exposed parts, along with his hands, as he gardened in the sun. All natural sun, all natural melanoma.
To the extent that you are better able to control the amount and duration of exposure, yes. Otherwise, no.
nope.still burns your skin.
I don’t know but I tan before the summer just to get a base.
Then when I’m out in the real sun, I use an spf.
go figure….
nooo way
nope. people who tan in a bed habitually for numerous months increase their risk of getting some sort of skin cancer by almost over 90%. true story.
It doesn’t matter…I can’t tan no matter what I do.
even if it is… Who’d wanna be inside gettin’ a tan?
No
Tanning beds are more dangerous.
Who cares, don’t give in to peer and cultural pressure. Bee yourself
Haha good question.
1.) I don’t tan, period. I prefer to be my pasty self…
2.) You’ll eventually get cancer from both, just like you’ll get cancer from everything you eat or do or look at or touch…or at least that’s what all those 60 Minutes specials say. It seems that the 60 Minutes themes never change…they go between: obesity, cancer causes, and sexual predators…
Anyone using one of those things is apt to get skin cancer and look old before their time.
Even a face lift can’t fix skin that has turned to leather…blah!!
Candy
I have a question for you, Dan:
If you’re offered apennyfor your thoughts, and you put your two cents in…
where does the other penny go?
noo way. neither of them is safe. but i think outside is better if u have to choose one
tanning beds are evil. but sometimes in the dead of winter, i’ll lie in one for ten minutes or so to remind myself what the sun feels like.
at certain points…yes…lack of sun poisioning…but i think that people shouldn’t go in it…its not natural…
It’s worse (healthwise) than being in the sun.
The UV rays are more concentrated in a tanning bed.
Nope
Nope!
N O
both are idioitic.
Pale skin is where it’s at.
Spray tans if your vain.
no
Tanning is not safe.
Not sure… but all I know is that I just went yesterday and I fried… ever heard of Bob the tomato?
No … it still damages the skin!! I avoid the sun as much as possible, especially since I had a hyper-plastic solar keratosis removed (just turned to cancer). All those years of sunbathing took its toll. RYC: So you’re a boob man, eh, Dan?? Awesome!!
no, you can still get cancer, and it’s easier to burn on a bed. Plus they are not always steril! (however you spell that word)
<3 Sherry
either way you’re getting cancer!
No, tanning beds are more concentrated UV rays.
It’s 10 times worse….Yay for UV light and people wanting to collect the rays…
Pesky
Quite the contrary; there’s actually a study done on this, by the way.
ryc: “He who hesitates ends up being third”. That’s hilarious, I really like that. Very clever
I wouldn’t know.
Cancer either way
No.
no. and i agree with you on the veggie chips. they made me sick. but hey! they may help me lose some weight!
No and I think both are very bad.
(as i used to work in a tanning salon, i know alot about this topic). first of all, UV rays are broken down into UVA & UVB. UVB are mostly the “bad” ones, that cause cancer. The newer technology in tanning booths, has you tan for a max amount of 8 minutes a day. these booths deliver a better tan & have only about 2-4% UVB rays (versus the 16-27% from direct sunlight). Now that you know the facts, you tell me. Which do you feel is safer?
No way! Didn’t you see the sunscreen post on my xanga?! I am a huge advocate of sunscreen, and it’s ridiculous to want to force your skin to have to protect itself against harmful cancer causing rays. One fierce sunburn doubles your risk of getting skin cancer, and you get can burned just as easily in a tanning bed as outside. People think a sunburn is just a term but they could save themselves the trouble and money and just hold body parts over the stove.
Absolutely not!!! Tanning is not good at all, but if you insist on getting one using light (and not chemicals in a bottle), then by all means do it outside, not by laying out, but by being active in the sun. A natural healthy tan is not a real concept, but the closest natural alternative is getting a tan while playing a sport or working outdoors or just having fun and being active
yes, I dont tan outside or on a tanning bed.
I doubt it, besides which – I hate to break it to you – it looks so fucking fake and gross you wouldn’t believe.
To all the people that think any kind of tanning is sexy, alluring or attractive….next time take an old leather brown shoe/boot out of your closet…and picture it as your face in twenty years….take it from a former sunbather….umbrellas, wide-brim hats, lots of spf 30 lotions and shade is the best~~~
btg…
tanning in a tanning bed sounds like an excellent idea go in a little tube and get cancer.
No, I haven’t seen evidence that leads me to believe so.
No
No. And there’s scientific evidence to back that up.
No
NO! Its horrible for your skin. worse than outside!
Both are bad, you are still getting UV rays which cause cancer and premature aging – I have seen some women my own age who tanned and they look 15 years older than me, at least….ick. Wrinkle city.
probably not, its really concentrated.
No. Both cause skin cancer. but outside is safer for two reasons: 1. The sun doen’t malfunction. 2. It is less direct from outside.
Of course not, but I still go.
I’d say it’s not a good idea to go out of your way to get a tan either way. I don’t think it’s bad for you, but I don’t think it’s good to tan too long either, and “too long” varies from person to person.
yes… is limited and controled
no, but people will pay any price (money and life threatening) to look what they think is ‘good’
Tanning is cancer prone period wether outside or inside
no
they’re both bad, but human beings NEED a little bit of sunshine. tis good for the bones.
NO, artificial sun and real sunshine are just as dangerous. Plus, they make you look old before its time.
Christy
I don’t think any of it is good at all.
(((((( GRANDMA HUGS ))))))
Lori
I used to work in a dermatology office in Springfield and they don’t suggest doing EITHER! lol
Scientifically, it’s the same. Too much exposure will cause serious problems down the road.
Tanning beds are safer because you can go nekkid and not be stalked or ticketed……….yes I like the privacy.
I think it is worse.
Yep, I do.
no, but it’s easier therefore i do it anyway
I dont know why ppl tan. Im asian and I hate being tan.
I don’t do tanning beds……feels like a coffin. I prefer the good ‘ole sunshine!
Personally, I think a tanning bed is morbid, like frying yourself. If I was apothead, I’d freak out if some one had a huge bat of butter on the side.
No. Most people who go to tanning beds go so often and at such high heat settings that it adds up to be more damaging than people who occasionally tan in the sun. I’ve never been in a tanning bed myself. I just see no point in paying $25 per month to tan. Plus the cost of gas for driving to the tanning bed 3 or more times a week, those goggles people buy, and tanning lotion. The sun is free, people.
[ariana]
i know for a fact that tanning in a tanning bed exposes you more completely to the same dangerous rays as natural sunlight. even though i am one of the palest people i know (i don’t get a tan, i get an ecru) i would not risk my skin in that way… i might try the artificial tanners, but i would prefer a medication taken internally (anyone old enough to remember the book “Black Like Me”?)
*~*No, tanning beds are much worse for you. I read somewhere that 30 minutes in a tanning bed is equal to about 3-4 hours outside
Nope. Still getting UV rays.
The fact that people THINK tanning beds are safer makes them more dangerous because the beds are more likely to be abused. It’s sad that places still have the nerve to sell “unlimited tanning”.
According to the CDC website: “UV rays from artificial sources of light, such as tanning beds and sunlamps, are as dangerous as those from the sun and should also be avoided.”
Also from the CDC website: “Effective sun protection is practiced by less than one-third of U.S. youth.”
May is National Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month. I was at the Hallmark store the other day, and they never mentioned that…
Probably not, but I do it anyways. So do millions of women and a few men, so I am not ashamed.
Do I think? Come on now, go ask a dermatologist.
tanning in a bed is much worse–the UVA and UVB rays are more concentrated
nope!
hahhahaha NO
MEXORYL.
ew. That’s how you transmit crabs.
nope =) even tho they both aren’t good either way.
<33
nope, one hour in a tanning bed gives you the same amount of damage of eight hours outside
No.
No.
i prefer tanning beds, in fact i have one beside my guest bed!!! and i LOVE IT!
no.
spray tan is the safest.
actually, statistics show that tanning in a tanning bed is 8 times worse than tanning outside
Heck no.
tanning in a tanning bed is like 8 times worse than tanning outside..literally. =[
I think tanning naturally is healthier.
nope there is still harmful UV rays.
not at all…its horrible on your skin and makes you wrinkle faster!!!!
Neither.
no. tanning beds will always shine U.V. rays at you. going outside you can sometimes avoid them cause they cansometimes be blocked out by the clouds. but its still risky.
and yes i do know what i’m talking about because i just finished freshman biology and it was a big topic with my teacher.
Tanning? What is this…tanning?
Overtanning in a bed or outside is bad for you. Your health, and, in my humble opinion, your appearance. :]
30 minutes in a tanning bed is equivelant to one entire day unprotected in the natural sun

tanning in a tanning bed sounds like an excellent idea
go in a little tube and get cancer.
I don’t think it’s bad for you, but I don’t think it’s good to tan too long either, and “too long” varies from person to person.
yes…
is limited and controled
no, but people will pay any price (money and life threatening) to look what they think is ‘good’
Tanning is cancer prone period wether outside or inside
no
they’re both bad, but human beings NEED a little bit of sunshine. tis good for the bones.
The sun is free, people.

i know for a fact that tanning in a tanning bed exposes you more completely to the same dangerous rays as natural sunlight. even though i am one of the palest people i know (i don’t get a tan, i get an ecru) i would not risk my skin in that way… i might try the artificial tanners, but i would prefer a medication taken internally (anyone old enough to remember the book “Black Like Me”?)
Do I think? Come on now, go ask a dermatologist.
tanning in a bed is much worse–the UVA and UVB rays are more concentrated
nope!
hahhahaha NO
MEXORYL.
ew. That’s how you transmit crabs.
nope =)
even tho they both aren’t good either way.
<33
nope, one hour in a tanning bed gives you the same amount of damage of eight hours outside
No.
No.
i prefer tanning beds, in fact i have one beside my guest bed!!! and i LOVE IT!
no.
spray tan is the safest.
actually, statistics show that tanning in a tanning bed is 8 times worse than tanning outside
Heck no.
tanning in a tanning bed is like 8 times worse than tanning outside..literally. =[
I think tanning naturally is healthier.
nope there is still harmful UV rays.
not at all…its horrible on your skin and makes you wrinkle faster!!!!
Neither.
no. tanning beds will always shine U.V. rays at you. going outside you can sometimes avoid them cause they can sometimes be blocked out by the clouds. but its still risky.
and yes i do know what i’m talking about because i just finished freshman biology and it was a big topic with my teacher.
Tanning? What is this…tanning?
Overtanning in a bed or outside is bad for you. Your health, and, in my humble opinion, your appearance. :]
30 minutes in a tanning bed is equivelant to one entire day unprotected in the natural sun
