  • Pet

    I want to get a pet hamster.  They seem like they make good pets.


    If you could have only one pet, what pet would you want?

  • I’m surprised that I’m going to choose a cat over a dog…… I Love Dogs, but my cat is way less trouble than any other pet I’ve ever had…. so if I could have only one, I’d go with a cat………  If I were choosing between a hamster or guinea pig, I’d go with guinea pig….. I’ve had both, & guinea pigs have much more personality in my opinion…….

  • P.S. Hamsters are not really good pets. I’ve had two hamsters at different times before, and they were both very evil, smelly and enjoyed biting every human hand that reached into their cages to refill the water/food. In most cases, they have very crusty yellow teeth which aren’t very pleasant to look at. But then again, they’re soft and fluffy and have adorable beaty eyes. :D

  • I don’t really like my cat very much because of her nasty disposition, but I’d say that in general a cat is good. They’re independent, so you don’t have to constantly hover over them and knock yourself out caring for them.

    my bunny is the best pet i’ve ever had- i love him like a real person, lol. i have had him for over a year now and he is potty trained to go in his cage so we let him run around the house all day. although, now in the summer time we put him outside for the day and then he comes in at night. i really think that giving him the freedom to go outdoors is what makes him such a happy pet. honestly, i think everyone should try having a bunny. they would fall in love, lol.

  • Hamsters aren’t very friendly, and that is an important thing for me.  For me, a pet has to serve a purpose, like a hunting dog or a cat that will kill mice, or it has to be affectionate.  I can only see getting that from a cat or a dog.

    If I could have any pet, I would want my cat, Mercy, back.  She lives at my mom’s house, and I miss her [the cat].

  • Ya know, I’ve been thinking about this…forget the religious- soul aspect of this…When have we crossed the line w/ killing animals? We step on ants and all various types of bugs w/no thought, trap mice, shoot rabbit, turkey,deer, goat, etc, fish for fish, is this because we don’t see a personality in these animals to make us not feel guilty? Maybe since we never grew up w/cows that we think they must not have a personality. Just thinking outloud, I used to take a large magnifying glass and make a small spot w/the sun and torch bugs, pick the legs off spiders, When is it concidered bad?

  • I have a dwarf hamster named Squeegee. She’s very cute and cuddly! Hamsters don’t bite if you love on them from the start, and they don’t smell if you clean their cages. As much as Ilove Squeeg, if I could have any pet, I would have a cat. Unfortunately, my roommate is allergic, and I like to travel. The hamster is a much more ideal pet!

  • Right now I own: six snakes, five rats, a white-lined gecko, a uromastyx, a tarantula, a horse and three pit bulls.
    My roommate owns: ten snakes, a tegu, two black throated monitors, a broad head skink and a tokay gecko.

    If I could only have one pet, I’d probably have to go with a pit bull, but the black-throated monitor runs a close second.

    As for hamsters, they are cute, but they do tend to bite and are not the brightest creatures.  I recommend a pet rat.  They’re exceptionally clean, very smart, friendly and less prone to biting.  However, for some reason, a lot of people have an aversion to the tail.  If that’s the case, I’d recommend a guinea pig.  They’re smarter and don’t bite as bad as often as a hamster.

  • Guinea pigs are nice. In some countries people eat them. A friend in Africa told us they tired to raise them for food, but the guinea pigs kept escaping from their cages. This was back in the days when the women wore grass skirts. The guinea pigs would nibble on the skirts while the women were sitting down. (They sat on low stools called balambos.) So that experiment didn’t work. I think the guinea pigs were imported from France. The French used to eat them too. I don’t know if they still do or not. Does anyone eat hamsters? Hardly seems worthwhile.

    I read back….trying to see what you were talking about……in your link/etc. and how people were mean…….I’m sorry, but perhaps I am to city girl or whatnot…..but I really cannot comment on that one….slamming an animal to the ground twice…digging a hole before it is dead, then buying it alive…..Dan— you know ME….and you know me well……but any of that….if that is what caused the problems……is just horrible.  No….I would NOT have gone and said a thing to the person…..you also know by now thjat is just not like me, I hope?…..I wouldn’t have gone and instigated the person, but D*MN, Dan……that was……was……pretty….visual, and upsetting to me…..and not something I could ever imagine doing.  Perhaps others would say, “but she stopped it from suffering”, but geeesh….man….I wouldn’t want to be thrown at the  cement and would never EVER do it to ANY of my animals (and I do have MANY— 3 cats, a hamster that JUST died 2 weeks ago….of his own accord and yah I saw him suffering, yet still tried….bottle fed him and all with my kids…..and let him die on his OWN…..had no hole dug…knew he was dying, but we had him for over 4 years, and I TRIED….even knowing he was dying….., a golden retriever, and a rabbit) ….*cringes*  sorry Dan…….glad i wasn’t here for that….because though I saw no link, just reading back and seeing what went on was upsetting enough.  Really!

  • Do Hamsters have souls???…..I can not say, but I watch Jack Van Impe presents on tv…..which is all on biblical prophecy, and today’s world…..They had, or still have a promotional book offer on pets, and it’s supposed to be written by some of the best theologians as to whether pets go to heaven or not???….The theologinas who wrote this book believed that animals do go to heaven whether, and whether that means they have souls I do not know, nor do I pretend to know???   I’m sure if you could get hold of this book on pets you would get more of an idea whether they have souls, or not????….

  • A pug- they have great personalities in my opinion.

    I see one every once in awhile, it’s at least 10 years old. I always enjoy seeing it. It runs up to me and breathes funny… then sits down and waits to be petted (If that’s the word)

    If you get a hamster, just make sure you keep its cage clean. If you’re not careful, its smell can last forever even after you remove its dirty cage from a room.
