Movies Part 2
I want to do movie selections here again tonight. Just tell us a great movie that was not some big blockbuster type movie.
The movie that sort of surprised me was called “Joe Dirt.” It was so funny and yet at times touching. It was nothing that I would have expected out of a David Spade movie.
Name your best non blockbuster movie suggestion.
Comments (204)
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang… hilarious.
black hawk down
thank you for smoking
Whoa, first? Cool. And everybody take that suggestion, by the way… you’ll be a better person.
i liked rat race and the sisterhood of the traveling pants
ehh
i usually like the big blockbuster movies haha
black hawk down was PRETTTY big…
Chasing Freedom & The Exonerated
Godzilla Versus MechaGodzilla.
I like the movie Gattaca….It has Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman and Jude Law….It’s a science fiction flick.
Candy
hm.. i like a lot of them. a good one will always be The Breakfast Club. i always rent that on 80s movie nights.
“Big Fish” made me cry like a baby.
“Yesterday” is a Zulu film, but you should be able to find it at your local video store.
It’s worth your time.
And also “Born into Brothels.”
And here’s a link if you want to check them out…Chasing Freedom & The Exonerated.
Space Jam
Bubble Boy
Solar Wind too!!!!! It was local but SO good.
AND DUCK MONKEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Army of Darkness.
Witness
Royal Tenanbaums
Boondock Saints
Ahh, I just watched it today.. Rudy by far is the best movie ive ever seen
Anne of Green Gables
My Big Fat Greek Wedding
1941 is awesome. Steven Spielburg, John Williams, and John Belushi. What could be better?
I really liked “THe Man Who Would Be King” I always recommend that to people. It’s the best!
I don’t think The Princess Bride was a blockbuster, but I’m probably too young to remember. Watch it. Laugh and have a good time. I don’t know how old your kids are, but they would enjoy it, too. It’s definately a family movie that everyone, even smart aleck, punk ass teenage boys will enjoy.
V for Vendetta was thrashed by critics, which made me furious. It is honestly one of the best films I have ever had the pleasure of viewing and I suggest it to anyone that has an open mind toward a different way of thinking.
Abandon was awesome, so was mall rats & breakfast at tiffany’s (could’ve been a blockbuster, not sure).
Half of the ppl who commented said movies that I’d consider blockbusters……
Ooooh, I like Drop Dead Fred. Everyone should check that one out! It’s so funny.
And regarding the comment from the person who posted above me, The Princess Bride is an excellent film as well, much more suited for the whole family than V for Vendetta is…(V is a little intimidating).
The Way Of The Gun was a good movie, good writing, good acting, good story…and shot without any fancy camera special effects.
Donnie Darko
Stand By Me
American Dreamer with Jo Beth Williams, & Tom Conti…. it had a bit of everything, romance, comedy, action, suspense……. What more could you ask for???!!!!
Anything by Wes Anderson is spectacular… Royal Tenanbaums, Rushmore, Life Aquatic, Bottle Rocket, etc.
But my choice goes to Rushmore. It is amazing.
CAMP… Probably the funniest movie I have ever seen.
BUBBLE BOY.
you will laugh until you cry.
The Nine Queens or Brotherhood of the Wolf come to mind for foreign films. Snatch, Fight Club, and the Boondock Saints come to mind too. Pulp Fiction is always fun to watch. Monty Python and the Holy Grail is my all time favorite.
Save the last dance or “O”
last i checked…my big fat greek wedding was def. a blockbuster. just a thought.
It’s A Beautiful Life
EMPIRE FALLS!!! based on the novel by richard russo is amazing!!
loved the bbc’s pride and prejudice!
One of my faves is If Lucy Fell
Donnie Darko was a good movie, I dunno if that counts?
Eva.
The Other Sister. It is a really sweet story, but could possibly be considered a “chick-flick.”
Velvet Goldmine.
a japanese movie called “After Life”…the point of the movie is that when you die, there is no heaven or hell…you get to pick one moment from your life and relive it (new each time) for the rest of eternity..you forget everything else…….but, if i am going to pick a movie based only on being entertaining for my tastes, then must run with “Gummo”…there is no middle ground on this one..you either love it or you hate it….
Garden State! Its a romance movie, but it isn’t as mushy as some romances. Its more of a sweet…quirky romance movie.
And Bubble Boy is amazing!
Office Space, just because I saw it the other day.
SLC Punk
“The Magus”, though it hasn’t been on tape or DVD. I have most of it from the last broadcast I saw, in 1981. The first time I saw it was 1970 in the wardroom of the ship I was on in the Navy. It was just before the midnight watch on a dark night, and the watch crew and I discussed it for a couple hours.
“kinsey” is very good.
I am Sam
Anne of Avonlea
Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken
28 Days
Ghost.
The Princess Bride wasn’t a blockbuster, but it became a cult classic when it was out on video. That is definitely one of my all-time favorites, hands down.
Hmmm……….I loved The Breakfast Club. I can’t think of any other movies at the moment, lol.
-KrIsTiN-
i agree with whoever said bubble boy. it’s a story about somebody finding themself(ve? whatever), and however many stupidfunny jokes are in there the story is really good
One of my favorite movies ever is Playing by Heart. I had never heard of it till my college roommate told me about it. It’s actually got a lot of big names which makes it kinda surprising that no one knows about it… Anyway, it’s sort of like Love Actually except better.
Five People You Meet In Heaven and Big Fish were my favorite.
“before sunset”…in 2004
ethan hawke, julie delpy…most have never heard of it…it was heart-tugging, w/ open-ended possibilities…perfect for a hopeful romantic…
well… i will have to go with Seven monkeys…. or is it thirteen… i cant remeber but it has bruce willis… and yeah… gr8 sci fi flick… also there is this japanese film called Iron Monkey … or something liek that… funny and shweet ninja battles…
Va, Vis et Deviens (Live and Become) – about a refugee Ethiopian Christian boy who pretends to be a Jewish orphan so he can emigrate to Israel… best movie I’ve ever seen, hands down!! My one-second review does not do this film justice.
oh and Monty Python.
shadowlands
also I love the movie Crybaby with johnnydepp
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. 8D
I also really liked – ‘Le fabuleux destin d’Amelie Poulain’ (bittersweet French comedy, 2001), ‘Akira’ (Japanese animated film from the 80s, sci-fi classic), and the Italian film, ‘Life is Beautiful.’ Yes I have a thing for foreign films, can you tell?
Also loved this summer’s Quebec comedy, ‘Bon Cop, Bad Cop,’ which is a blockbuster here but is not in the States, so that counts…
Office Space is great, maybe too much of a cult following to be considered unknown. I love The Last House On The Left. It is a fantastic horror movie, even more so if you listen to the extra features. Anything by Mel Brooks or Monty Python, but again with the cult following.
You’ve Got Mail
RYC: My husband is the type to hold that one good deed over my head. When we start to argue and I tell him he never does anything nice or never thinks of me, he’ll remind of that one day when he brought me lunch. What if I remind him EVERY day that I lay out his clothes EVERY night for work?
This is Spinal Tap
To End All Wars
HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY!
ohyes.
ohh and yeah i’ve heard lots of good things about Office Space
Hotel Rwanda
UHF
Oh and Chocolat
The Joy Luck Club was pretty darn good.
I just saw Little Miss Sunshine yesterday, it was really good.
I meant Life is Beautiful.. can’t get the title right!
The Duelists
It’s called “independant film”. Oh wow….I love Better than Chocolate, The Dreamers, But I’m a Cheerleader, Slums of Beverly Hills, etc.
Yes, I love indie films.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (the ultimate midnight movie). And no, it wasn’t a blockbuster movie when it opened in 1975 but it did become a the greatest cult classic ever.
Boondock Saints. Watch it. I mean it… Do it…
She Devil.
MULHOLLAND DRIVE, Pi, REQUIEM FOR A DREAM!!!! must watch them, now!
American History X
Reservoir Dogs
Donnie Darko
21 Grams
Yessir.
“clean”.
Clerks.
Dazed and Confused.
does motorcycle diaries count?
if not, then ”who killed the electric car?”
office space is quite entertaining.
i forgot about that one.
i liked “proof”, too, with gwyneth paltrow and jake gyllenhskjdhkjhauhaul.
Office space was hysterical.
Revenge.15yrs old. Anthony Quinn,Kevin Costner,Madeline Stowe. ***Incredible romance.***a must
I love the scene in Joe Dirt when he’s trying to look sexy posing as the cars pass in front of him.
Muholland Drive. Naomi Watts. Very hard to understand, must be smart.
Trainspotting/Requiem For a Dream. I’ll never do serious drugs for sure b/c of those movies.
Spun. Mena Suvari,John Legazamo,Micky Rourke, pschyo funny drug movie.
The Game. Michael Douglas, Sean Penn. Awesome thriller.
Gimme feedback if ya can, I love movies b/fore the kiddies.
SuperMan
joe dirt sucked
Session 9
“The Conversation” by Francis Ford Coppola (made between Godfathers I and II)
“Walkabout” by Nicholas Roeg
Last Man Standing with Bruce Willis, Mafia goes out to the Wild West great movie.
donnie darko
seriously.
I know someone already said it, but they are right.
the jacket was good too.
Fight Club was big I guess but critics hated it because it was so violent.
Girl, Interrupted… Reality Bites… I sort of have a thing for Winona Ryder…
…oh… I got a good one: IGBY GOES DOWN… it has an AMAZING cast… and it’s like Catcher in the Rye except it has more of a plot.
somebody said Clerks… I recommend ANY Kevin Smith movie.
And Dazed and Confused. I love Dazed and Confused.
Oh When Harry Met Sally…
I could go on for days…
Monty Python
Brat Pack movies
Okay, I seriously need to go to bed now.
American History X, starring Ed Norton. He should’ve won an Oscar for this one.
Yay now i have some recommendations…good post, Dan.
But I am going to recommend something that you would probably not find in your neighborhood Blockbuster…
“Love & Sex” an indie must see!!! And no it isnt nasty either! LOL
For a family movie: Little Manhattan, Zathura
and other grownup movies worthy of checking out:
The Salton Sea, Boogie Nights and Grandma’s Boy
A couple people said Big Fish. Just wanted to say that was an okay movie, but one of the best ending I have ever seen.
My favorite non-Blockbuster movie is Sometimes In April, the saddest movie I have ever seen.
Funny Game, its cool
Waiting For Guffman
Princess Bride is outstanding.
Babette’s feast is a good story but slow paced.
This is an old one from the 80′s (but then I am old too, lol)…. Educating Rita. Stars Julie Walters and Michael Caine; tells the story of a London woman who decides to leave hairdressing to pursue higher education through Open University. Great relationship between the two — I SO love Michael Caine. *sigh*
Spirited Away
Lady Beware
I love the Princess Bride. A more recent movie that was way underappreciated in the box office is Serenity. Really cool Sci-fi flick.
I really liked The Bread, My Sweet.
You should watch “Manos:The hands of fate” if you want to see possibly the worst movie ever made. It is the best though because it is so terrible. It was on mystery science theater 3000.
saved, with mandy moore. its the funniest movie ive seen in a loooong time.
Wow…. Too many to list. But some I have seen listed and definitely agree with- Donnie Darko, Big Fish, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang… And some others- Chantilly Lace, Freeway, Imagine Me and You, Road to Perdition….
I think that if they remade Logan’s Run it would have a shot at being blockbuster, the original movie is so horribly done it is cool. I like The Island as well, it came out the wrong week with too much competition, but the characters are good. I think that Poseidon also came out in the wrong week, but it so interesting to see the group overcome the various challenges. I think though, the religious theme in the movie should have been put closer to the spotlight – it was a major part of The Poseidon Adventure.
Dogville was amazing. Very difficult to watch at parts and psychologically challenging, but big payoff and incredible symbolism.
Half Baked
The Man in the Moon. It’s Reese Witherspoon’s debut and it has Jeremy London(i think that’s his name) in it. And I’m not sure how big this one was, but I really enjoyed White Oleander.
diary of a mad black woman.
spaceballs rocks my socks off
A Fish Called Wanda.
Reservoir Dogs and the Boondock Saints for action/drama. The Notebook is an awesome love story.
End of the Spear (A fantastic…and true…Christian missionary movie.)
A Room With A View and O Brother Where Art Thou. The Wonder Boys was really good too!
the six-hour long A&E version of Pride and Prejudice!!!
amanda
Serendipity & 13 Going On 30 (both are chick flicks, but great story lines, good acting, great cast, and well done. Also, I think men & women would both enjoy Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. In my opinion, it is the best Jim Carey performance that I have ever seen, and likewise, great story, good acting, great cast, and well done!
A River Runs Through It
Was “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” considered a blockbuster? I know it made a ton of money but I don’t think it really took over the box office or anything. I love that movie. I also really like…oh, what’s the name of it? It’s a little movie with Meg Ryan and Tim Robbins where she plays the niece of Albert Einstein. It’s so cute, and got panned by critics but I love it. I love pretty much anything with Meg Ryan though.
Major Payne
The Nightmare Before Christmas- that’s my favorite movie.
Just off the top of my head, Memento is amazing. If you haven’t seen it, it’s kind of hard to follow in the beginning but it’s cool once you catch on.
Billy Elliot
“Half-Light” with Demi Moore. It didn’t get released in the theater in this country, only on dvd, and it should have been! Beautiful movie!!!
Shaun of the Dead & Thank You For Smoking
Dogville was really really good
Everything is illuminated.
dogma, 40 days and 40 nights, the hebrew hammer.
yeah, quite a mix of religions, but i love all of those movies.
*foof* Leslie
The Game of Their Lives–the US Soccer Dream Team that no one expected to win and yet held their own in the World’s Cup. Can’t remember the year of the actual game…but the movie was incredible.
i agree with the six-hour long A&E version of Pride and Prejudice!!! amazing! and walk the line.
“No more Baths”

TOMMY BOY
the princess bride, a league of their own, Gattaca. and Joe Dirt was fantastic <3
oh, and scent of a woman and the thief lord.

rudy, king of hearts, les mis, high noon, and thats just a few
the princess bride, and the runaway bride are good to
I agree with the people who said Bubble Boy. I thought that movie was going to be retarded, but my fiance rented it one night and I laughed my ass off! And Jake Gillenhall is the cutest he’s ever been in that one!
Also, A Lot Like Love (I think that’s it?) with Ashton Kutcher is really good. And Down With Love with Ewan McGregor and Renee Zelwegger is really awesome too.
If you like old black and white movies, you might also like Here Comes Mr. Jordan. There have been quite a few modern day remakes of it, but this one isn’t so hokey as some of the modern day ones. One of the remakes was that one movie with Chris Rock where he dies and looks around for a body, I can’t remember the name of it, but it was lame as hell.
Oh, and speaking of Jake Gillenhall, Donnie Darko sucked ass. I don’t care what all these goth/emo wanna be’s say. All these “woe is me” kids think Donnie Darko is the coolest thing to hit the planet and it is so stupid, it makes no sense whatsoever and it’s a waste of 2 hours or however long it is. Most of those kids I described, that are all like “OOoooH Donnieee Daarkkooo, awesooome” probably haven’t even seen it, and if they did, they probably don’t understand it and only claim to like it because it is like UhmyGawd so Kul and deep and stuuuff.
One called ‘Spanking the Monkey’ (or something like that) or Rupert’s Land.
Actually – scrap the first one. Just Rupert’s Land
Zelary
Pure Country. Classic.
*A*
i remembered another
can’t hardly wait was incredible. <3
Return to Me w/ David Duchovny and Minnie Driver — great ‘chick’ flick!

Shopgirl!
Howl’s Moving Castle, Spirited Away, Thirteen, Big Fish, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Donnie Darko, Equillibrium.
[ariana]
Oh, and I have to agree, Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
And the newer “A Little Princess”. Not the one with Shirley Temple. Blah.
[ariana]
Oh yes again, and SLC Punk.
Amazing.
[ariana]
The Abyss (but only the full version, ‘cuz they cut out about an hour and a half for what they put in the theaters). Kinda slow at times, but it’s got a great message.

Gattaca (jude law) & To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything Julie Newmar ( Patrick Swayze (sp?) & Wesely Snipes)
