Hurricanes
The concern last time was that there was not enough warning for the citizens of New Orleans of the coming hurricane. Some felt that the whole thing was racist.
Now the head of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said today that the levee system in New Orleans may not hold up against a sizable hurricane.
A Tropical storm called “Ernesto” is headed toward that direction. It is expected to be a hurricane before it hits land.
So I want to make it very clear this time:
RUN FOR YOUR LIVES

Would it be politically incorrect to put ads in New Orleans advertising “Free Fried Chicken and Watermelon Up North” to get them out?
ahhhhh

Hahaha, thanks for the warning.
hey sexy
If I see a hurricane in Ohio, I’ll be sure to tape it for you all!
Good Call
Oh great. People are just going to forget about these warnings, stay in New Orleans, get hit hard by the hurricane, gas prices will go up, we’ll be asked for donations everywhere to help the victims who basically wanted all this to happen to them.
Me? I want to go down to New Orleans right after this hits and pick up some free stuff at all the stores I can find. I wonder if any Best Buys would be too flooded to have any graphics cards dry and working…
Let it be said. Let it be written.
yeah like more people died running from hurricane rita than people that died in hurrican rita…
bleh, I don’t know…
I think the whole thing was just the whole
AMERICAN GOVERNMENT IS LAZY thing.
Im in Houston Dan. Is it comming to get me?
Thank you for that important public service announcement.
Ha! Hysterical!
I wonder why people would ever even decide, “Gee……let me move *here*….right here in this spot on the Gulf coast where hurricanes tend to happen”.
I was discussing this w/ Jay and he thought it was because the threat was never as big…bigger hurricanes didn’t happen as much THEN as they do NOW. I don’t think he is correct, and I still wonder why anyone would buy a home in an area that is prone to a hurricane. Do they realize what they are doing, and feel the risk isn’t great enough to not live in said states along the Gulf coast? Or is the risk smaller than I realize?
Of course, this is coming from me….(the person who lives in too cold NY and doesn’t get to enjoy the beautiful Gulf of Mexico….the person who is all bundled up with a sweat shirt, sweat pants, and even socks right now..with all of my windows closed NOT to keep AC in, but instead to keep the cold OUT…..as it already is dusk outside. Blah! COLD!!!!! )…… where I *think* the last hurricane that we had here was “Gloria” many years back!?
Hah…..good advice, but I think the day I see pigs flying is the day I also see a hurricane rip through Kentucky
~Emily~
well that’s super
we’re going to New Orleans in November, I hope those levees hold up
hehehehehehehe – lucky I’m 100 miles inland!
I still question the wisdom of building a city fifty feet from the ocean BELOW SEA LEVEL.
good job Dan!
I find it offensive that the destruction of New Orleans is going to be caused by an “Ernesto”…why not Eddie? Evelynn? Enos? Esther? Earl? Or:
EATON?
EDGAR?
EDISON?
EDWIN?
ELAN?

But I’m a really slow runner!

I think we’re safe here in MI.
A timely and relavant message. Thank you.
Hah, this post made me laugh.
Lol. Clever and astute as usual.
**runs for life even though I live nowhere near New Orleans**
Well spoken, well spoken.
I’m wtih spidergrass. It made me laugh, too
It’s not like there is anybody left out there anyway.
i’ll keep that in mind if i ever travel to a hurricane state/country during hurricane season…i’m safe in michigan
Kelly
don’t run to houston, we’re full still
another one…..poor ppl…….will we ever be able to rebuild New Orleans?
ernesto should only be about a category 1 or 2….so maybe just get in a fetal position.
yeah, you might wanna leave. like, yestarday.
hurricane? whatever.
Now if you had said snow was coming, that might actually solicit some action out of people.
No No dan your doing it all wrong your suposse to say this…
RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!and if you dont then your skrewed over….haha lozers
SAY NO TO NEW ORLEANS!!!! seems liek that place sucks.

ohmigosh, best post ever.
haha, i have never seen a real hurrican, not many of those in MI
omg NOEZ
CLOSE THE BORDERS!
You’re a good man, Dan.
Dan, I’m afraid that wasn’t funny. And many people who have commented so far have been pretty flippant. Some have just be downright racist. But I guess that’s OK as long as it’s being preceded by a disclaimer promoting the “politically incorrect”.
Natch.
Hehe… woops.
Hopefully Ernesto won’t threaten the Gulf Coast. None of us need it…
They really should take on a new policy on building reconstruction there: If it takes till the next hurricane season to rebuild, best not to bother.
LOL. I think there are very few people left down there to run. I think half of them are still living here in Oklahoma.
someone call Nagin and tell him a storm is coming… so he doesn’t miss it this time…
I’m not worrying, seeing how it hasn’t rained in north texas for two months.
Glad I’m in NYC..
Thanks, but even if I start running now, I doubt I will get far enough away not to be affected.
Nice warning, but if it makes it to Missouri I’ll be extremely surprised.
If it were only that easy!
YIIIIKES!
Well, I didn’t think that there were tornados in NY but okay!
couldn’t have said it better myself. of course… i’m sure i’ll be fine here in arkansas
omg
RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!
At least most people get about a week’s warning. That’s plenty of time to get prepared and get out of dodge. If it were tornado alley expecting a big one, they’d be very lucky to get an hour’s warning about it.
Sadly, the people who should be getting that probably aren’t.
Nice one.
Nooooooooooo!
Wait….it won’t affect me.
Thanks anyways.
I understand why so many of them didn’t leave the first time…we get tornado warnings here in Arkansas all the time, but people always ignore them (until they see them, but then it’s too late). After crying wolf so many times, people just don’t believe it any more. I hope they take all the warnings and evacuations seriously now because I saw so many people who lost everything, including loved ones. I worked in a hotel at that time and the desperate phone calls throughout the evening of evacuees looking for displaced loved ones or somewhere to stay were incredibly disheartening, especially since I couldn’t do anything to help them. I would not want to be in any of their shoes at all. I sincerely hope they take the necessary precautions this and every time.
they still wont get it…
yah, that’s pretty funny, RUN FOR YOUR LIVES
lol
-katlin-
Eh, it’s not in Missouri so…
GASP!
GRAB YOUR PETS AND RUN AWAY!
They let a lot of pets drown in Katrina. So not cool.
LMFAO
they probably read this as much as they watch the news…
Well, you know that there are going to be some ppl who want to stay in N.O. anyway and “weather out” the storm. Gee, that worked so well last time.
i am so glad to not be living in louisiana anymore.
haha, Dan the funny man.
and there was no way the troubles in New Orleans were racist. That is ridiculous.
Hurricanes are a pain in the ass.
Lmfao x 239084092830482034
If I had been drinking water while reading this post; it would have come up my nose!
Thanks for the laugh!
hah i live in minnesota only gotta worry bout them crazy blizzards and wierdo’s who say yah you betcha sssuuaaare
would you like some toooooooooost
RYC: Lastnight was a blast….I do think that I was up rather late though, oh well…more memories for the weblog…which btw, no I don’t think that there is such a thing as TMI on here…I mean common’ you don’t have to read it… Okay back to what I was sayin’ I had to work 12 hours 2day, but that is okay, because they paid me to get caught up on my sleep…out of my 12 hour day, I slept for at least 7 of them…Woot! Woot! Now i am very well rested, and am ready to go out and kick it in da club….. <3Rachel
Goddamnit!! Why are people still in New Orleans? It’s like fuckin’ twenty feet below sea level, ahhhh-DOY!
you can buy them books send them to school but can u make them learn NO!!!!
That’s funny.
*snort*
that was rather unladylike of me…
Could you give us folks here in Cali a warning before the next big earthquake too?!
I feel the locations where Katrina hit, they had plenty of warning. If I remember correctly, they had days in advanced to get out of the area. Not just with Katrina, but with any hurricane coming in, they often have several days notice if they watch the weather channel or the news. That does not mean I am being insensitive or sinister to the people down on the coast but they had a chance to get out, I have been down there and hopefully they understand that even if they did get out in time, their “stuff” would still be destroyed. They clearly had a chance to get out and I am almost positive some people did not just because they did not understand the severity which isn’t their fault, it is just something you have to experience to know.
Let’s face it, if you don’t think a fucking hurricane is oging to cause damage, you’re a total moron. You can blame anyone you want, but the biggest idiot will always be the person who doesn’t learn from history and figuire out that a massive storm so powerful it’s in a class all its own might be dangerous. Pull your heads out of your asses, people.
You know the mayor’s probably just going to keep everyone there so he can blame it all on President Bush again. I hear the whole Bush administration met in a secret chamber under the white house to pray for a hurricane to hit New Orleans again, you know, get em while their down.
you are pretty much my hero. pretty much.
Not everyone can get out in time. People need to work. Many people (yes, particularly black people) in New Orleans simply didn’t have the means to evacuate, or anywhere to go.
Sorry if I’m being a party pooper here, but I really don’t appreciate people making light of tragedy, or acting like there was nothing wrong with the situation/reaction.
I’m thinking that, being in Minnesota, which is pretty close to the center of the North American continent, that if I see a major hurricane heading my way, running won’t do me any good…
my grandma lives right where it heading.Last year my older sis apartment got flatten by Katrina. If a hurricane hits where she live then well she already dont got much so she wont lose too much. She still living in a fema trailer.I mean if she had to leave she wouldnt have to pick over what it important. She barely got anything. It would suck though if she had to go thru it again. She lost some very important stuff in Katrina. That she wont ever be able to get back.
I live in alabama in the north part.We got some of ivan and katrina. We just get bad winds, tornadoes and tons of rain
What should someone do in New Orleans if they don’t have a car?
Hmmm………I think I’m pretty safe up here in Maine, but I’ll remember that warning, you know, just in case
I think people in New Orleans and Florida and all those other places that get hurricanes should stop being stupid and go somewhere else when they see on tv that theres a fucking hurricane coming. And you know what? I didn’t donate a damn cent to Hurricane Katrina because I really don’t feel even a small bit of pity for those people who died. They were being dumbfucks and if they are really that fucking stupid, they deserve to die. I mean, if I lived down there when Hurricane Katrina was about to happen, I would have packed my shit and gone north, even if I didn’t have a place to go when I got here. Hell, I would sleep on the side of the road if I had to, as long as I didn’t DIE in a hurricane. Some people, I tell you, some people….
-KrIsTiN-
And rebuild five or six miles inland, please. For all our sakes.
-Guru on the Hill
damn it!!!! I dont want any more black unproductive folks in Houston!!! They messed up our tasteful city! Violence ratings have climbed significantly since they came to us. I hate it!!!! Everytime we have a burglary, robbery, gang bang, murder, we always say… were they black, were they from New Orleans? and its not just my circle of friends! Even attorneys and policemen!
oh man i hope they all run as fast as they can
Ever tried to evacuate a huge population? I say every huge populated area have an evacuation drill once a year. Kind of like a holiday. You can have tail gait partys and give out prizes to the first million that cross the line. Maybe teeshirts or something. Then we can blame the politicians for all those slackers that didn’t participate or have a plan.
LOL
well we don’t get that many hurricanes here in NY..but thanks for the warning…
DUN DUN DUN
You’re a fucking idiot, Dan. Haha, that was really very funny, right? Oh jee, lets not forget the bodies of the people floating face down in the water, or the fetid stench of soaked, rotting flesh. Lets not forget the looting, no no, lets just all have a good fucking laugh at all the people who made a mistake and suffered for it.
You deserve to be shot.
You are wasting your time Dan. They can’t read in New Orleans. All they can do is whine and play the blame game.
I am soooooo sick of hearing about Katrina! When I hear the world Katrina on the radio or TV I IMMEDIATELY change the channel. And just a fact here, Mississippi was hit full force with Hurricane Katrina, not New Orleans. There were Mississippi towns that were wiped off the map. Yet, Mississippi didn’t whine and cry and blame. They got busy and rebuilt, helped each other and didn’t play the blame game. New Orleans on the other hand were a bunch of welfare people who all their lives had the governemnt take care of them. They didn’t do squat to help themselves. And anyone who moves back to New Orleans deserves just what they get if another hurricane hits there and another will. And they will whine and cry and blame the government again when it does. I mean look what they did, the re-elected that idiot mayor all over again. The mayor who wants New Orleans to be a Chocolate City. Anyone talk about racism when he said that? Nope, because he is black. Can you tell I’m sick of New Orleans? LOL
lol
haha last time i checked it was a class 1(for residents) meaning they have to get emergency food and batteries ready. i was in arlington(tx) this weekend with a friend from laffayette.
Lmao.
Thanks.
ROTFL. You rock, Dan!
rofl.
thanks for the warning.
awww shit. not again! I bet bush is gonna screw things up even MORE this time.
Nobody knew the levee would break. I just don’t think they took the media as seirously as they should have if they knew it was going to be disasterous.
It’s a bit of everyone’s fault for not knowing there’d be an immense wall of water soaking the place.
yes, that is a good point.
hahahha. you’re amazing.
haha.. good one
good one lol
*runs*
So I have a question (I read this somewhere online and I’m not quoting it exactly cause I’m WAY too lazy to look it up)
So you’re down in New Orleans in the aftermath of Katrina and you are a reporter… looking for your big break… your award winning photo, and amist the looting and flooding and waters washing away everything, there, neck deep in water is George Bush Jr., the president of the United States, moments from death…
You are now faced with the biggest decision of your life…
Do you take the photo that will define an era in color or traditional black and white?
how can a hurricane be racist?!?
What?
Too funny!!
Thank you. Personally, I think most people in New Orleans got quite a bit of warning, but just ignored it.
[ariana]
HOW CAN YOU CALL IT RACIST WHEN THE MAJORITY IS THE SAME RACE? IT WAN’T REACIST, IT WAS NATURE THAT HAPPENED! GET OVER THE DISCRIMINATION “ATTITUDE!”
