  • Pluto

I was reading in the Wall Street Journal today, or more importantly sweety421′s site, about the demotion of Pluto as a planet.  The International Astronomical Union general assembly voted to demote Pluto as a planet on Thursday.  I am not sure who died and made them in charge of the Solar System.  They are now classifying Pluto as a “dwarf planet.”  (Apparently they didn’t get the memo that they like to be called “little people planets.”  They also have every right to reproduce planets).

Needless to say, astrologers are up in arms.  Apparently this puts Scorpios in a potential dangerous position.  In fact, the leaders of the American Federation of Astrologers and the Astrological Association of Great Britain are saying they will still regard Pluto as a planet.

So we have a battle between the Astrologist and the pseudo science of the Astronomers.  I personally am standing by the Astrologist.  If we give into the scientist on this one, we will lose the battle against them in the whole “the Earth isn’t really flat battle.”

Are you with the Astrologist or the Astronomers?

  • I would say that Pluto was one of the most wonderful cartoon dogs of all time…wait you meant the planet- clearly I need to stop skimming.

  • …eh I dunno though.. I’m kinda neutral now that I think of it.

  • who really cares whether pluto is a planet or not, other than religious nutacases who worship the stars?

  • Um….Plueto is a planet. That is what I was taught, and that is what I shall always say. Dwarf planet? Please? Is that even a real classification?!?! If it’s a “little people planet” lol, then how does that screw astrology things up, because it’s still got planet in its name….right? I don’t do well with this science stuff, words are more my thing.

  • astronomers…

  • astrologers

  • That’s mean, I like Pluto ;_;

  • Neither. I really don’t care. This does nothing for me. My life isn’t different due to the fact that Pluto has been demoted.

  • Astrologers…Pluto is/was my favorite planet.

  • astrologers .. seriously now, who cares how big it is? it’s been a planet this long, why screw up everything now? it’s not like the evolution debate, where it’s going to have actual ramifications depending on its classification. whatever discoveries made on or around it will still be Pluto discoveries .. it’s dumb.

  • astrologists.

but only because i think it’s dumb to change pluto’s designation.

    they’re both dumb.

  • definately the astologist

  • I don’t know, the astronomers have a point. And why do we need Pluto in the first place, eh?!?
It’s cold, it’s a rock, it’s too far away to do anything with, you can’t see it very well, and it’s got a really weird orbit (so it doesn’t even fit in with the rest of the planets). I say it’s time to go!

  • i’ll have to go with the astonimare on this one becsue astoligers are morons… i’m glad i’m not a scorpio!!!

  • none really, if pluto is to small to be a planet it doesnt really change anything.

  • lmao dwarf planet.

    I don’t care really.

  • actuly its not a rock its fozen methane.. ti think that the gass its amde of.. thisre is not “rock” there,  its ice.. I have n ided how i know that…hum I’ll have to pondert hat for a while, and while i’m at it i’ll ponder why i’m such a horendious speller

  • Astrologist. Pluto was my favorite planet! lol

  • Astrologers. Does it really matter if we just leave the title alone? What does it prove calling it a “Dwarf” planet?

  • hmmmm I think that I don’t really care.  What impact does it have on my life?  Scientist are constantly changing the names of things.  Just imagine what it would be like if it was in the news every time a disease causing microbe was renamed.

  • astronomers. it really doesnt matter to me if pluto is a planet or not.

  • The whole argument just sounds ridiculously hysterical…especially the way you put it…ROTFL!!!!

  • They’ll end up changing their minds eventually. Exactly how does one demote a planet?? Whatever…

  • Astronomers, science is way cooler than hoaky voodoo mumbo jumbo.

  • astrologers. or astrologists. is there a difference between the two words?

anyway, Pluto has always been a planet, so why change it now? is it really going to make a difference in our everyday life? i think it’s stupid people are worrying about a place that has never been visited (i think), when there are so many problems here on OUR planet.

  • this is silly. :P I go with the astrologists. scientists just want to ruin everything for everyone because they were picked on in high school. bitches.

  • I feel bad for Pluto ya know? I still think it’s a planet whether they like it or not. It was a planet for 15 years of my life and will be.

  • I would simply go with the astrologists cause I don’t know why you would want to make every Astronomy text book ever wrong. It baffles me why they would do something like that when they could be doing more useful things. I was also just informed that there will be two more planets coming in our solar sytem. lovely.

  • if I realy cared, I’d go with the Astronomers, but really its a big ice cube in space! Whats to argue about???

  • astronomers DUH. astrologists are crap.

  • honestly, i dont care lol.

what bothers me, is what they’re gonna come up with so kids know the nine..EIGHT PLANETS.

my very eager mother just showed us nine planets.

my very eager mother just shoved us nicely!?!?!?

    XOXO,
    cG.

  • lol, the earth isn’t really flat.
    Oh goodness that was funny.

  • astrologists.

  • wow. who has the right to vote on “planet or not”? no one. it’s like voteing on if you are a person or not. there shouldn’t be a debate.

  • I’m with the Astrologist on this one.

  • Astronomers FTW! I’ve been waiting for this to happen.

  • Pluto is being persecuted by less than  5% of Earth’s astronomers! And did Pluto have it’s say in this whole thing?

Omg… it’s because Pluto is  SMALL,  isn’t it?

  • astrologists.

if they taught it that way for like 40 years, why would they change it now? that’s retarded.

    pluto lives on!!!

  • Haha, I love the wit in this entry! xD

Yeah, I’m going with the astronomers on this one.

  • astronomers do jack shit to make people happy. astrologers on the other hand help people gain confidence, and feel good about themselves, even when they aren’t worth what comes out their asses. so…

    astrologerts all the way.

  • Astrologist. Why would they ever WANT to demote Pluto as a planet? Like, seriously, what’s the whole point behind it? I guess now it’s just a Disney character. :P

  • I don’t believe in astronomy, but I’m sad Pluto was demoted.

  • I don’t agree with Astrologists because the scorpios will be in danger, but I mean…. come on…. how long has Pluto been considered a planet? I didn’t spend 4 weeks in the second grade learning all nine planets for nothing.

So I’m with the astrologists on this one.

  • Does it really matter..?

  • Astologist. But just because my friends and I were planning to escape to Pluto post-graduation….

  • I commented you about this when I heard. I just knew you’d ask about Pluto, regardless of where you heard it from.

  • Still a planet. Probably because I was raised to think of it that way.

  • if pluto isnt a planet then we need to think of a new sentence to remember the planets… its just easier to keep it a planet… and its always been my fav planet, it held its own out there in the big ol’ universe, with all those comets & such… gave short people like me some hope…

  • You’re hilarious.  Seriously.

  • I am with Pluto.

  • I would have to say Im an ASTRONOMER. To be quite honest, I did not know the difference b/w Astronomer and Astrologer so….I looked it up. I am one who needs reason and proof. I dont base on belief nor assumptions and to find the truth we must research and research. And with research, we must narrow down, knock out, and define. We must categorize. The science beneath everything is the process of breaking down. Scientists have discovered xena some time ago and it is the same as Pluto. I read an article on this breaking news a few days ago on how they ruled out Pluto as a planet, I just cant remember the specific reasons they gave right now. But when I read it, I thought it was justified. If you found an object, lets just say a gem……and one day you found out one element was off…and was not a gem but a discolored diamond…you must change its category. Technology is advancing more each day and what we had….30, 50, 150 years ago…is being brought to light. We are getting smarter, thats all. Some asked what does it matter, what does it hurt if the Pluto remained a planet. Well…simply, it s not a planet, anymore. Why teach something that is not true. Teach it as whatever it is. The solar system is wide and vast with things all too unfamiliar…so as the world is getting smaller (by that I mean as we are learning more and more and being connected to things we never once knew) we must differentiate what we find. This is to help out future even tho our Pluto Lovers may be upset.

I dont believe in the stars and what they tell. Just how I dont believe in Urban Legends.

  • I look at it this way… Pluto was a plant until they found bigger things than it that would need to be called planets.

If I’m a manager and they find 5 other people in my business qualified to do my job do they demote me so we are even? No.
Pluto needs to join the union!
    Fight the man, Pluto!

All’s I know is I have a Magic School Bus book that says Pluto’s a planet that will now be worth big bucks someday on Ebay.

  • Astronomers, to be sure.

  • As a Scorpio, I’m with the Astrologers.

  • And yeah, ZeitgeistHysteria said what I think; if The Magic Schoolbus says Pluto’s a planet, IS IT A PLANET. That redheaded kid didn’t take off his space helmet on Pluto just to have his head freeze for nothing!

  • Planet***
    Pluto was never a plant.

  • I’m not really into like the horoscopes or following of the moons in what sign and stuff but this time I have to say I’m with the Astrologist. How can they just demote a planet… its been a planet for hmm how long??  Thats just craziness.  Do they have nothing better to do than to sit around and say well Pluto is definitely way too small to be a planet, I mean come on!!

  • Oh my lord, this post had me in stitches!  I think it’s one of the first times one of your posts has literally made me laugh out loud.  Good show.

  • its retarded

    but you already knew that

  • I believe in his book Synchronicity, the famous psychologist Carl Jung uses empirical scientific method to validate some of the tenants of astrology and so I wouldn’t entirely knock that subject; there may be some truth to it.

It basically relates to the gravitational pull of celestial bodies in influencing human behavior and there is indeed some influence there apparently. A friend who worked in a hospital’s emergency reception room said that they always dreaded full moons because those were typically their busiest nights with more injuries due to violent crime and miscellaneous odd behaviors people exhibited during full moons.

In so far as what they call the thing, I would leave that up to the astronomers. The scientific method works best for sorting and ordering the universe. The object’s genuine astrological relevance (if any) to mankind won’t be altered by a change of classification.

I think that astrology is a highly theoretical science which yet remains veiled behind a sort of mythological/hocus-pocus outer crust acquired in its early years of interpretation.
Whew, guess I’m in rambling mode tonight.

  • Why is there so much hoopla over matters nobody gives a shit about?

  • Since astrology has been around a lot longer than we’ve known about Pluto… what did Scorpios do before 1930?

  • There should be a huge battle between astrologers and astronomers…who ever lives…wins.

  • its still a planet no matter what they say, im a scorpio and they can bite me i like it lol

  • Pluto has ALWAYS been a planet to me, and ALWAYS will be.  I made a mini solar system as a kid and the inner child within me would be devastated if weren’t true anymore…  what do scientists know anyways!  :-p  to them!

  • Astronomers. I never thought Pluto was worthy of planet status anyway!!!

  • It’s not pluto’s fault he’s small! He never got any vegetables to grow big and strong! I’m sticking whith everyone who think pluto’s a planet. “A person’s a person, no matter how small” -Dr. suess.

  • i have no fucking astrological planet no more.

    ugh.

on the front page of our newspaper  it was like..

    PLUTO: BOOTED.

    retarded.

  • uh… astronomers? astrology goes on the list *below* pseudo sciences.

  • Think of of the paper and money we are going to waste having to re-print all those books . . . . Pluto is still a plant in my head.

  • It means that Pluto was never a planet, we changed the definition and Pluto didn’t fit in it. Pluto is small. Very small. My ass is bigger than Pluto! Seriously, the whole premise of astrology is bullshit anyway, but if it were true and if Pluto were big enough to influence people’s lives then there are tens of thousands of objects big enough to do that and astrologers wouldn’t b able to predict anything anyway. That’s because astrologers are retards. Who cares what idiots think?

  • You know this is really going to mess with Pluto’s self confidence. Maybe we can come up with a distinction that doesn’t take away any of Pluto’s dignity.

  • Just because it’s smaller than the others doesn’t mean it’s not as good!! >_<

  • Just because it’s smaller than the others doesn’t mean it’s not as good!! >_<

  • for the record…pluto was discovered feb 18, 1930. since it has only been 76 of pluto being considered a planet rather than the 1000′s of years for the other ones….i dont think it really matters that much.

  • there are 52 other dwarf planets…what about them??

I’m a Scorpio my whole world is just upside down now…

  • I am a scorpian…..no wonder I have been so confussed lately……hahah

  • How would the astronomers like it if someone called them a dwarf.

  • Good grief! You know, I just wonder how much tax payer money is going to be spent over the research and resolution of this debate.

  • Even though I plan on minoring in Astronomy, I have to side with Astrologers here…Pluto will always be a planet…we’ve been taught that for years! And, if we change it now, what’s going to happen to all of the models, all of the diagrams, all of the textbooks that have already been build, made, and printed? Are we just to pop Pluto off? Do we tear out the pages, Or spend thousands on new textbook for our schools, just because of one little planet?

  • I’m with the Pig Farmers of America, cuz the give me BACON

  • I was taught when I was young, that pluto is our planet. So my answer is there will always be a planet named Pluto no matter who says no

  • Our definition of Pluto will not in any way alter what Pluto is, Pluto does not care what we call it, and exits in the same state, whether we call it planet or not.  The cosmos are not shifting based on our definitions.  As far as Astrology goes, what did they do before Pluto was known to exist?

  •    I’m going to have to stand with the astrologists on this one.

  • i am with the astromomists or however you spell it. i think it is wrong to say that something cant a a planet when it technically is. it isnt harming us so y do we have to like “kick it out” lol. well thats all i have for today.

    Morgen

  • Hmm … I can honestly say that, as a Taurus, I don’t care if the Scorpios are in a bad position. They can go back across to Mars where they came from. They’re fine!

    -Guru on the Hill

  • Since retiring as a planet, Pluto and it’s moon, Goofy, should become cartoon characters and make movies together.

  • RYC:  No; it didn’t work.  Sing is some more.  Louder this time, please!

  • Why would we change it now? They’re wasting our money on this crap.

  • Wow this is extremely stupid…who really cares?

  • I like Pluto being a planet…if it’s not, that means I got some of those answers on the 2nd grade science tests wrong…

  • What I’m wondering is who cared enough to call a meeting over “who can be an official member of the Planet Club”

  • it’s an elite club, you know
    not everyone can join
and even if you get in, they might kick you out 75 years later

  • ASTROLOGIST!!!

    I don’t really know.

  • neither

  • you cant just demote a planet on a whim, so i’d have to side with the astrologists too, but also does it really matter? its a ball of ice the revolves around our sun, i dont see where the big fuss is coming from, who cares wat it is………

  • both….but im leaning towards the astrologists b/c I’m into astrology

  • I have to side with the astrologers!  At least they make up their minid and keep it made up!

Also, about astrology, I learned in class Yesterday that because of the moving position of the sun, the signs you think you are under, you are probably no longer under!  If you really want to know more about it, comment on my site or message me.  I’ll be more than happy to tell you what you really are in this crazy thing called the Zodiac!

  • You’re with the astrologer?

    The ASTROLOGER?!?!?!?!?!

    . . grrr.

  • I’m with the Astrologists.  My very educated mother just served us noodles??  Nine pizzas is way better. :Þ

  • I’m going to have to go with the astrologists on this one.

  • I’m with the astrologists, I can’t believe it’s not a planet anymore.

  • Astronomers

new silly sentence: “My very elegant mother just served us nacos!”

    =)

u know what, I’m going to write a song titled “Plutos not a Planet” about a guy from pluto…but since its not  a planet…he’s just a plain jerk….or somthing like that…lol…. or I’ll just make it one of those songs whos titles have pretty much nothing to do with the song…haha

    ~Mayisha

  • I felt a little sad when we lost Pluto.

  • what the heck
    pluto is a planet
    no question
i mean, it has an orbit, its been a planet for 76 years
y cant they just leev it as is ?

anyway, who died and gave them the power to rule the solar system?

PLUTO IS A PLANET AND THATS THAT

  • I’m laughing too hard to make a decision!

  • I think that they should still classify it as a planet. I mean, how long have we all been taught that it was one? It’s not going to hurt anything. I do see, however, your point about the world being flat. *shrugs*

  • I’m with the astronomers. If we kept Pluto as a planet we would have to classify about 4 more things as planets. It’s easier for kids to remove one than have to memorize 4 more :) Plus science always is changing so people just have to get over it.

  • The “little person planet” quip made me giggle

Who has any right to say Pluto isn’t a planet? I think it should have some say in it.

  • Astrologists, biatch.  Screw Pluto.

  • The astrologists… I did a project on Pluto in the 8th grade, and now I’ve become attatched to it. It’s an awesome little planet.

  • its a giant rock in space.  egotistical losers who call themselves scientists….ha! who needs ‘em…..oh god i sound like my grandfather…..

  • Astronomers…
but I disagree on the whole
“earth is 4.6 billion years old” thing.
    Evoloution is wrong
    and clearly not science.

  • ;) ask the plutonians what they want to be called^_^

  • I’m with hard sciences. Astrology is fun, but it isn’t science persay.

  • ROFLMAO pluto’s a mini-planet!!(sorry, i find that hysterical)

  • To be blessedly honest, I don’t give a crap one way or the other.

  • We had a big discussion about this in science. I think Pluto is still a planet.

  • pluto is cool, they should stick with the planet, and astrologers should be mad…and also, everybodys always been taught there were 9 planets, why change it now?

  • Oh no!  I’m in a potentially dangerous position?!  *runs around screaming with his hands up*

No, really, I tend not to side with astrology on anything, but I’d argue with those dumb astronomers over the ‘planet-ness’ of Pluto.  As far as I’m concerned, if it’s large enough to have an almost perfect (‘almost’ because of terrain features) spherical shape, and it orbits directly around a star, not some other planet, especially if its orbit is basically solitary (unlike the asteroid belt, or the Ort Cloud, from which come comets), then it should be classified as a planet.

Dwarf planet…pssh…you can’t just make up a new term like that…I think I’m gonna call our sun a ‘yellow dwarf’ ‘cuz it’s smaller than most other stars…

  • Astrologist.

Whats the big deal if we keep it a planet anywho?

  • im  SCORPIO…now that they say pluto isnt a planet im kinda depressed….

next thaing you know jupiter is “Too Big” to be a planet.

    xX-Nicole-Xx

  • Astronomers.

  • pluto is a planet…so i agree with whoever says it’s still a planet.

  • We pretty much owe everything we know today to astrologist. Scientists don’t have any real place here on this earth.

  • :S..
    I don’t know

    but poor pluto
    and I’m a scorpio
    lol

    <><Renee’

  • I blogged on this too.  Planet Forever!

  • PLUTOS STILL A PLANET

FUCK U 2003 M313 OR WHATEVER UR NAME IS!!!!

  • Astrologists.

  • Astronomers, I guess. If science says it’s a dwarf planet, I figure they’re probably right. I don’t believe in astrology.

  • astrologers, although i think the whole argument is completely ridiculous. poor pluto’s self-esteem is probably ruined now.

  • I’m with science on this one. Pluto got what it had coming.

  • astrologist

  • Does it really really REALLY matter?
I mean, scientists love to continually categorize and re-categorize everything, but what significance does it really have to anyone living on this planet?

  • Thanks for the support, Dan. Of course I’m with the astrologers, and I wrote about the issue here. I’m a Scorpio, as well.

  • of course astronomers. if you count pluto as a planet then there are lots more things thats should be counted as planets which we said were too small, but are actually larger than pluto.

    who cares what astrologers think.

  • Pluto is a planet.  I suggest we send those of the International Astronomical Union to Pluto and then let them say it isn’t a planet.

  • Pluto is totally a planet!! Stupid scientists need try and study something else!! jeez!! Someone got bored!!

    Alysen**~

  • I’m with the astrologists. I’m a Scorpio. I don’t want to be in a dangerous position. O_o

  • When astrology began, Pluto hadn’t been discovered yet. So by demoting it, shouldn’t they just revert back to the earlier system?

  • Astrologers. Fuck the astronomers. Who gave them the right to take away one of our planets?

  • Astronomers, mates.

If Pluto is a planet, then so are bazillion other asteroids floating around in space. They need to define the solar system’s bredth b4 they start saying what’s a planet and what’s not.

  • For once, I’m speechless. lol…
