  • Are you asking, do I need to try to be rude? Obviously not. I am rude enough without doing that.

  • no thnx, some ppl jst dont now how to speell.

  • If it was a good friend I’d say something (in an email or message, not a comment), because I’d want them to do the same for me.  I hate making typos.  :)

  • That would not be a wise move on my part

  • If it’s a very very embarassing typo, yes. I will copy and paste that line into their comments box, so that they will re-read it.

  • I try to control the urge to do so but it is difficult.

I know I’m not perfect, but I really have to wonder what some people were doing in English class in school….

  • not really.

especially not today. im too happy because of my birthday!!!!

  • No, but if I can’t tell what the word was supposed to be I might ask them it.

  • *ask them about it.

  • I’ve done it once and it was in a message to someone with a flawless spelling 99.9% of the time. I just didn’t think this person wanted a spelling mistake to ruin his perfect writing.

I spell things wrong mostly because I type too fast and rarely proof-read. When I’m quoting someone I use [sic] to show that I know  it’s spelled wrong…and that’s just so that other people don’t  try and correct me. I say just read and enjoy, if you can understand it then I’ve done my job.

  • no … but i correct my own.

  • yes. absolutely.

  • No. It’s a bit officious, to do so, I think.

The exception is, if the person was a friend and she’d made a hilarious typo. Then I might mention it.

  • It annoys me when I see it, but I don’t feel the need to correct them.

  • ….and yes Dan, I think that you need to tell these people to stop trying to correct you and just answer the freakin’ question, as I think that’s the reason you asked this question in the first place.

  • If it’s absolutely horrible

and if I know the person well…

    but usually I don’t.

  • I don’t feel the need to, but I sure would appreciate if they’d check their own spelling.   Fast internet communications is no excuse for sloppy writing.

  • i cnt spll wrth sht, bt evrybdy knws wht i am spllng right nw. and if i do spll smthng wrng and smeone has to corrct me, wll fck thm fr not having nythng bttr to do.

  • No, but I hate when people post crap like “Lol, gg.”

  • I feel the need, especially when the same mistakes are made over and over (i.e. the your/you’re thing), but I rarely act upon it

  • Yep. Cuz imma grammar nazi like that.

  • hahahahahahahaha…………..yes.

  • Not of fellow xangans…real life friends get corrected…(and I wonder why I have so few friends).

  • No. I’m guilty of typos at times, which is different than not knowing how to spell. Some of these people are just ignorant, however, and nothing I say will ever change that.

  • Not normally, but when a poster comes to my site and leaves a snotty comment and has words spelled incorrectly all through their comment, then yes I point out they need to learn to spell.

  • Uh… I think that past a certain age people should just know better. Like, definately is not defanately. I mean, the editor even has a spell checking function. At the very least, let’s have words spelled correctly. Otherwise, can I find one of the horrendous grammar/spellers and track their success in life… you know, to see if they’re working for me one day. Muahahahaha! ;)

  • Oh my goodness, yes!!!

  • never!  thats so rude!

  • Oh my, yes.

  • Sometimes…..b/c I think it’s funny.  But I’m horrible, so I try not to do it too often!

  • GOD YES!!! Come on, people, you’re writing for an audience. Can’t you respect them enough to spell correctly? Craft intelligent sentences? I take pride in what I write, even if it’s fluff. And it’s embarrassing to me when I can’t spell something correctly or my grammar or punctuation is wrong. It’s also hard to read. It’s called laziness and disrespect. And I have no problem pointing that out.

  • I’m a grammar nazi, but I try to refrain as much as possible.

RYC: YOU WERE THERE TOO? No way! Are you from St. Louis?

  • Yes, sometimes.  But I try not to because I am notorious for making typos. I generally try very hard to get it right, but I type faster than I think sometimes.  Especially in comment boxes where there are no spell checkers.

  • Gods yes! You’ve heard of grammar nazis? Well, I’m grammar Hitler.

  • noe, nawt at all. affter alll, this iz Zanga, nawt skool

  • It’s not so much the incorrect spelling that bothers me as it is growing messengerization of written language. Not so much a problem with someone my age but check out sites by people under 18. Whatever, C U L8R

  • Only if it is someone who normally has it correct, then I might bring a typo to their attention. Most of the time, I am not likely to notice though.

    uNlEsS iTs SoMeThAnG lIk DiS

Then I am likely to assume the individual who wrote it doesn’t care that they look like a moron and ignore them completely.

  • No. I’m not perfect.

  • I try really hard not to, but when it’s a name, I’m not opposed to correction. Especially when I know they can spell it correctly. However, I will correct people in real life.

    -Guru on the Hill

  • Some Xangans don’t speak English as a first langauge. Some of us speak many langauges.

  • No, what is the point?

Ahhhh! I missed the George Allen question! I’m so glad you posted about it, though. I think he’s a slimeball, and considering the fact that he just used an ethnic slur weeks ago, the fact that he used a racial one years ago shows what kind of personality he has, in my opinion.

  • But of course.

  • Yes. I usually type my posts in Word so that I can use grammer/spell checker.

  • Never!  Because I am more guilty of spelling mistakes than anyone!

  • No. Correcting spelling is usually used to belittle and raze. Hardly ever done on a positive note.

  • no – but I hate having to read and reread things to understand what they are trying to say!!!

    Happy Hump Day!

  • Youre murderin tha kings english!

  • As long as I can understand them then I don’t care.  lol

  • No, but I do correct my family and friends when they incorrectly pronounce something or when they say something that doesn’t make sense.

  • Yes. For obvious reasons.

  • It just ain’t rite!  LOL

  • know i dont korreckt uhther peeple’s grammer

  • Spelling errors drive me crazy! but it doesn’t mean that I don’t make them too.

  • If it’s someone I know and they spell something wrong, then I’ll crack a joke about it, but for the most part no, I try to overlook it.

  • Yes, but I usually don’t do it.

  • Nope.. because most of the time you can get what they are trying to say…

  • Not exactly, I want to do so but I usually don’t. I guess if it’s a good friend I will.

  • No, because everyone mis-spells, and it’s not that big a deal.

  • hah, this post reminds me of the song

    “dream police” by cheap trick.

  • Nope not me… I am the one who need the correction.. Thanks for stopping by my site and for the comments .. Glad it was a blessing to you today..

    Blessings along the way..

    Kim

  • Haha, I know, it was really cool though, I loved it!

  • RYC: No, I was not drinking. The probkem is that the questions began being of the nature similar to the following: “This author (insert name I’ve never heard) wrote a book about this peron (insert another name I’ve never heard), former mayor of Chicago. Name the book.”

    WTF?

    etc…

  • I don’t usually call them out on it, but I do catch misspellings and grammatical errors and the part of me that was well trained by my grandmother cringes.

  • No, because I am more annoyed by different color for every word in the blog entry text.

  • Dan, I think you forgot to capitalize “Xangans”. It is a proper noun, right?

  • No way, my spelling is awful! My husband has an independent blog though where he monitors the comments before they get posted. If someone makes an atrocious spelling or grammar error he fixeds it for them so that they don’t look like an idiot. I think that’s kind of nice actually.

  • I think that the lack thereof contributes to a blog’s style. There’s no way I’d make a southerner use proper english on his or her blog when they don’t even speak it. I see blogs as people “talking out” everything and I know that while some thoughts are coherent, most are just a random blurb. I will always attempt to proof-read my blog as I go, but I assume that my proper use of spelling and/or grammar annoys some.

  • not usually, even if you mean it with your best intentions it tends to come off as rude

  • I often feel the need to post an entry similar to “GqwuibUIOAEB890jiqnuion389QUIB”, so I would be a hypocrite if I did do so.

On the other hand, it should be noted that I pay careful attention to my own grammar and spelling (even when I intentionally break the rules, I pay attention).

  • since I am a terrible speller, I stay away from correcting spelling errors. I do hate it when people spell things totally wrong or use slang spellings. Like “h8rt!” or “u” for heart and you. That drives me up the wall. It takes two seconds to add those two letters in people….! GRRRRR!!!

However, none of my friends use that method of typing so I dont have anything to correct.

  • No. Not as long as I can understand what they meant to say.

  • Nope… I’z typeth funnyness for funfun meself… so tis don’t bother Jamez

    Leave

  • this is a repeat dan

  • nope. is it really necessary? we’re not writing college papers now are we.

  • Yes, especially if the mistake causes confusion.  But I rarely do anything.  I’ve bungled several comments here, so I try to be lenient on others.

However, if someone makes error after error in post after post (and it seems like they should know better), I usually come to the conclusion that they are intellectually lazy.  If they want to be taken seriously, they should put forth more of an effort.

  • Like I don’t waste enough time on Xanga already!

  • I don’t feel the need to do anything.

You never have to do anything.

    Except urinate.

Some would argue that you haveto eat as well, but we all know that is just silly. No one has to eat.

  • Well to be honest, it’s a bit annoying when someone takes time out of their day to correct spelling in an e-mail and then send it back to them corrected, who really needs to do that. It’s embarassing for the other person not to mention unnecessary, considering the fact that the friend is taking time out of their day to write you an e-mail in the first place.(yes I say this from personal esperience) And the same goes for xanga. It’s a freaking weblog, where people want to express themselves, and feel it is a place where they won’t be judged, not a bloody English class. If you feel the need to go and do that crap, then you should change professions, honestly….

    ~Lynds

  • naw…..that is what spell check is for, right?  That and the way that I type…I know that most of my words are spelled wrong, but 99% of the time I spell ‘em wrong on purpose.  More like Abbr. them I just don’t care…..

    <3333333Rachel

  • People who never spell things properly, I ignore. For example, it may take several degrees in linguistics to decipher the typing of my friend Andrew (http://www.xanga.com/catchworth). On the other hand, my friend Rachael (http://www.xanga.com/fishyrachael) has almost perfect spelling, so I’ll generally help out when she misses something a lot. Andrew obviously doesn’t remotely care about spelling or grammar, so I don’t correct it for him; Rachael does, so I help her on occasion.

  • you forgot to capitalize the X.

  • I’m a writer. Of course, I do. But I refrain because it’s rude. : )

  • Haha. No, I think it’s rude. It would just embarrass them, and does it really matter that much? Chances are it was a simple typo, if not, I don’t really care.

  • Yes, all the time… and if someone sees one of my mistakes, I want them to correct me. I am a little over obsessive about my grammar and spelling…

  • All the time, but I usually refrain.

Many of my friends are in their teens or early twenties, and their spelling and grammar makes my head explode. What do they teach these kids in school?

  • Absolutely not!  I care more about the content of what they say, rather than how they say it.

  • i feel the need to correct the grammar of EVERYONE

    its sad but its true

  • It’s kind of irritating, but I usually don’t.

  • No. Because we don’t come here for grammar lessons. We come here to vent, meet others and write whatever we want to. Isn’t that the whole purpose of a web journal community? I bloody well think so!

  • I’m a freak about my grammar, but if it’s someone elses, I’ll let it slide.

  • Yes… however, I understand typos.  Evil little gnomes seem to live inside my computer and mess up my spelling just to make me mad.

The OCD spell check thing on my part may be the future English major in me.

But really it’s just annoying to have to decipher d1z gibderish.

  • oh gawd no…..

  • I have the urge to all the time because grammar is one of my biggest pet peeves…..I also have a bad habit of correcting people when they talk….

  • Yes!  It’s a huge pet peeve of mine, but of course I never do it.

  • Not anymore.  I used to be highly anal of that…but after a while, either sooo many people do the same thing & don’t really care anyway, or I make typos on accident-like other’s errors may be-when I am just in a rush, that I don’t really bother with it anymore.

  • Not usually on Xanga unless I know the person really well in real life…and in real life, I harass people about their grammar skills or lack thereof all the time.

  • I always FEEL the need to, mostly because I am such a word person and am very conscious of how people spell and write. Yet, most of the time I do not bring it up because I do not want to seem like a know it all jerk..

  • sometimes…

I dont type in complete sentences on xanga but I hate when people put “your” instead of “you’re” or say “we should have WENT” it’s “we should have GONE” … that bothers me haha lol

  • Yes, but I don’t usually bother. I wouldn’t get anything else done if I started being the grammar/spelling police on Xanga!

  • Also, I’m home sick today, so the more updates you could do, the less bored I will be. Thanks.

  • i think its rude but i do it

  • No, although it bothers me, as part of my job is editing.

  • i’m always tempted. misspellings are sad

  • Spelling = Yes

    Grammar = Yes

    Comma Usage = No

    Punctuation = No

    Capitolization = Yes

But what I hate most of all is things that people spell wrong on purpose like its an abbreviation but it isnt any shorter…in fact it is usually longerExamples: boyz, gurlz, hawt, etc.

    That is all

  • yeah cuz you freaking suck at spelling. well, it’s mostly your grammar.

  • no, though soumetimes it grates at me, and i want to!

  • O, PLEASE, never ever ever come to my site if  your answer is yes!!!!!

  • YES!! But, I would never actually tell someone their spelling is wrong; I would mentally correct it.

  • What’s with all the “yes” answers using lower case  i’s instead of upper case I’s….Doctor heal thyself!!!!

  • Sometimes I “feel” the need, but I restrain myself.  Usually, I know who they are and what their background is like.  I give them a lot of grace to be just who they are.  It is hard for people to put themselves on the line by writing in public.  We need to be encouraging, rather than discouraging people.  I know I make a ton of mistakes, but hopefully, when people read my “stuff” they get a sense of how I want to say something.  If it isn’t correct, OH WELL!

  • I have a tendency to correct spelling….I can’t help it. I am a English freak…heck I find errors in the newspapers all the time.

  • sometimes… depends on how often they mispell something.

  • No.  It bothers me to see things written like it’s part of an instant message, or when all entries are one sentence, but I just avoid the sites where people insist on writing like that.  As far as spelling goes, mine is horrible so I don’t hold it against anyone else.

  • I feel the need to correct AND be corrected. Everybody helping everybody improve.

  • Yes.  I am such a grammar Nazi.  I suppose, however, it makes a lot of sense, because I am an English teacher, after all. :)

  • I have a sworn duty to do so. God don’t like ugly grammar and spelling.

  • yes… when I want to be annoying.

  • Only close friends, especially if it’s a mistake like spelling grammar G-R-A-M-M-E-R or something. Words related to grammar and spelling should be spelled grammatically.

  • NO!  However, it does bother me when I see really, really stupid spelling mistakes and see a “(?)” next to the word (ie. “shortining(?)” for shortening)…why don’t they just run it through spell check??? eeeeee  anyways, I have a friend who’s pet peeve is spelling errors.  When she goes on someone’s xanga and finds the error, she HAS to correct it!  Since we weave through common xanga sites, I’ve seen her leave countless corrections.  Once, it annoyed me so much that I went on her xanga and made sure to leave a comment full of mistakes and told her to stop!!!  JANE, if you’re reading this, STOP!!!!!!

  • I don’t feel the need to do so. I just think that the only way to convey your intelligence level  on xanga is to spell properly.  People that use the word “anyways”(its ANYWAY peoplle!!) irk me. People that feel the need to constantly use “U” for “you” are either lazy or teenagers. I just note that the people that post in these ways are not very intelligent. After all, thats all we have to gauge someones personality. The way that they write and project themselves to the world.  The occasional typ is bound to happen so I tend to overlook that.

  • That’s like being bothered that the floor of a forest is dirty. What would be the point?

  • YES!

But I don’t usually act on that innner need. I just do it in my head.

    amanda

  • i find it rather a waste of time to deposit corrections….

now if someone asked me a question i did not understand it cause of poor grammer or spelling then i would ask that person to repeat it again with corrections.

  • Sometimes, if it’s horrendously bad.

  • I correct them mentally.

  • YES, YES, A THOUSAND TIMES YES!!!!

  • ppl dint like to read a majority off my stuff… but now i’ve straightened up my writing.. w/ out all that slanggg

if they dont like the way i type.. then move along.. i dint ask them too… no i dont correct unless i get annoyed from it being too unperfect.

  • I don’t feel the need to correct it, however I do see it and it drives me crazy. I have one word, PROOFREAD.

You know what else drives me crazy, people who type wrong…your is ur, to is 2, etc. I hate getting text messages or e-mails where everything is like that.

  • Yes I would. I’m weird like that.

  • Real life friends, yes. All the time.

people on Xanga… I’ll only comment on spelling if they spam me with a “your (sic) stupid” message and I go back to their site and see that they can’t even spell the word “tomorrow”. And I did that once.

    =P

  • I try not to, but I have one friend whose xanga I stopped reading because there were so many errors.

  • Know, eye just make sure eye spell properly when eye right. Yew Xangans don’t kneed too put up with bad spelling, write?

  • No not really…unless it’s really bad and they said something that pissed me off.

  • Yep, I hack into their sites all the time to correct their spelling errors.

  • Yes. It annoys me when people spell you as “yooh” and misspell and bunch of other words. I commented someone on it once and a whole different person said “It’s the way we talk on the internet.” But it’s not. They really can’t spell, not in real life of the internet.
I’m done ranting. Bet you’re happy.

  • Only if the error is really out there, or if they do it often, and it looks like they honestly didn’t know any better.  You can pretty much tell the difference between a typo and a spelling error, and it annoys me when people call out other people on what is obviously just a simple typo.  Also, whether I know the person factors into it.

  • No. It annoys me a bunch, but I’d feel rude if I corrected them.

  • Yeah. Sometimes I feel the urge, but I generally restrain myself. I also want to scream when people stire 3/4 screens without so much as a single paragraph break.

  • Do I feel the need? Yes. Do I actually do it? No.

  • all the time..

  • Sometimes. My mother IMs me from downstairs every so often(because I’m still a kid and I still live with Mommy, and because she’s too lazy to call me and she knows I’m online anyway) and she typs lik dis and I feel the need to correct her spelling. O__O Grammar doesn’t bother me much, spelling does.

  • rarely yours and like 2 other peoples are the only ones i read anymore

  • I don’t feel the need to, but it sometimes does irk me, thou I’m not the best speller… thou I am more perticular about speaking proper english, say when you go to the bank…

  • Sometimes. I know I do it often when people are speaking.

    [ariana]

  • No.  Everyone has problems, sometimes these problems are grammatical.  I’m sure I’ve made a mistake in just writing this.

  • I would but I do have poor grammer and spelling :P

But I have my english teacher to help me with that. I refuse to tYpE LyKe DiS

  • Heck yes! lol I try to correct everyone’s grammar. *hangs head*

  • I wish I could. I am a grammar nut. It’ll be my undoing. (*v*)

  • Yeah.

    Well, maybe not online.

But if anyone ever utters ‘me and my friend’, I am all over them. Haha. I am the Grammar Police.

  • no . . . typos happen.  but i might cringe if their spelling is extra sloppy.

  • I hate the spelling police. If i really cared if things were spelled correctly i would hit the spellcheck before i posted my entry…

  • It does bother me, but depending on how long I’ve known them, on whether I will correct them, or not. Your/You’re really bothers me, as does their/thier. I’m a natural proofreader, but do make mistakes occasionally.

  • I do occasionally.

  • No…usually xangans are really mature about everything and we know that if they make a couple of spelling errors it was a mistake and they probably noticed it. Though there are a couple of xangans who use leet, one or two don’t bother me.

  • My BIGGEST pet  peeve on Xanga are the people who write ALOT and do it in only ONE paragraph! GRRR!!!

  • yeah!! I do it all the time…it’s a bad habit i have

  • As long as every word they spell isn’t misspelled.  That would get on my nerves. I’m not a member of the spelling or grammar police.

  • YES!!! It bugs the shit out of me when somebody spells something wrong when they’re typing. I mean, really, they can’t re-read it before they post something???

                                                                   -KrIsTiN-

  • *eye twitches*

don’t get me started.  i mean, i’m not the greatest… i’m too lazy to capitalize and all that… but i am a bit of a spelling freak.

  • YES

  • I have the potential to be a bit of a grammar Nazi.
If it is something that is so wrong it bothers me, I will correct it.
If it’s not that bad, I’ll let it slide.
    It bugs me, though.

  • Probably not because they will get more offended than appreciative.

  • YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

  • then i’d be a huge hyprocrite ^_^

  • As a general rule, I correct spelling and grammar on a regular basis, but not on Xanga.  It seems pointless, because not everyone is going to use proper grammar on a webjournal.  And besides, I’m pretty sure I’d get ignored anyway.

  • The X should be capitalized in Xangans…

Just kidding, I’m not like that (on Xanga).

  • Nope… that’s why’s spell checker!

  • yes. but i don’t.

  • Sadly, yes.. yes I do, if only because it ruins something when i’m reading it when there are a lot of typos.. my mind kind of gets stuck on the typo.  Of course, I’m sometimes guilty of typos as well, but when i’m reading something not out of my own head, it’s really distracting.  I’ve also been used as a spelling dictionary my entire life for my father’s sign painting business, so I’m kind of automatic with my corrections and don’t realize i’m doing it half the time  >.>

  • I can’t help it!  I try really hard not to do it on Xanga or in person because it tends to upset people.  However, I feel that if one is never corrected, then they will never learn.

  •  > Only for the biggest booboo’s…. It annoys, but not too bad….

    Peace

  • Did you know misspelling is spelled in that manner? Most people seem to think it’s spelled “mispelling”.

  • I often feel the urge, but try to refrain.  I figure I won’t make too many friends if I constantly correct their spelling or writing.   On the other hand – if I’m asked, or if I know the Xangan well, then it’s a different story!

  • not really. it’s such an informal blogosphere that it seems pointless. ppl type the way they want to type, so why bother correcting them? if it were an essay or serious piece, then, yeah, maybe i might be compelled to, but otherwise… no

  • yes.  and btw/fyi, you put “xangans” when it should have been “Xangans”

  • no wya

  • it annoys the crap out of me sometimes

  • Yes.
    Amen, haha.

  • Yes, especially yours.

I’m kidding (so cruel!). But yes.

  • I think that correcting people on their spelling is a sign of insecurity…besides the fact that is very rude!

  • Yes; “Xangans” should be capitalized.

  • as an English teacher…. YES

  • NO

  • I usually want to do correct them, it’s just a total OCD thing, it bugs me when people or myself spell or type things wrong, ugh, rawr.

  • depends on what they’re misspelling. if it’s my name or something, than i will correct them.

  • i find it’s just a quicker way to say something= i jst find its a kwicker way 2 say sumptin   you see?=u c?

  • yes, it makes me angry that people dont even try. Oh well, to each their own.

  •  like if they get a word wrong then yes

  • umm. some times i have to be inb the moode to type

    Cassidy

  • NO WAY.

    JUST “LET IT BE”

HECK I HAVE O.C.D AND TYPE IN CAPS AND I GET BLASTED FOR IT ALL THE TIME.

    BUT EH. W.E

  • only when they spell my name wrong….

  • no,  if i make a mistake, who cares, it’s not like i’m writing for an english paper or something

  • whoops read that wrong, but no, it’s not like they’re writing for an english paper and unless it’s absolutely horrible, i should still be able to understand what they’re saying

  • No cause I am not that great at spelling either. So for all the crappy spellers out there in Xanga Land… ROCK ON!   Love, Peace, and Chicken Grease…and totally mispelt words.

  • I have been a Grammar Nazi all my life, but I never corrected anyone, unless I was asked. I think an unsolicited correction could be misinterpreted as being rude.

  • Xangans should be capitalized. ^^;;

  • no, unless they constantly say things like “that where i live” “what age u like 2 datew” “comment them all pleaz” and then i will get pissed and yell at them. (yes those are from an actual conversation)

  • oh, and sometimes i will correct the word “definitely” because for some reason EVERY time i see someone write that word they spell it wrong. “definatly” “definantly” sldkfj ahhh. and same for “ridiculous”. those are the two words that bother me.

  • YES!!!  I’m a grammar nazi :)
