  • Terrell Owens

Terrell Owens has been in the news.

Owens gave an interview today saying he did not try to commit suicide.  A report had been circulating in the news that he attempted to overdose on painkillers.  He is denying that report.

His publicist made the statement today that he had 25 million reasons not to commit suicide.  It must have been in reference to the money he makes.

The whole issue caused me to think about those who attempt suicide.

Do you think that making 25 million dollars makes a difference in whether a person is likely to commit suicide?

  • no

  • nope.. you still have emotional problems

  • He committed ‘likability’ suicide already.   He’s not particularly popular in Philadelphia.

  • I don’t think so.

  • no

  • Maybe. But not really.

  • No…..if you are thinking of committing suicide….your brain is not working properly anyways.  Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem……and that is not proper thinking.

  • No, money doesn’t always make people happy.

                                          -KrIsTiN-

  • I don’t think he was really trying to commit suicide in the first place.

  • money doesnt buy happiness…
    nope

  • Wow, 12th, lol.

  • My brother did it and 25 million wouldn’t have mattered.

  • nope … depression is depression no matter how much money you have.  But if I had a lot more money, I don’t think I’d be depressed!!!

  • No. Sometimes with a lot of money comes a lot of problems. Rich people have problems just like everyone else. They’re not perfect.

  • No. People who try to kill themselves have severe mental problems. It’s a matter of chemistry, not money.

    -Nick

  • Him, depressed? Well, in the sports biz they treat you like a cash cow, not a soul, so I wouldn’t doubt it if he tried to end it.

Sigh…All the more reasons I DETEST sports.

  • I’d rather die than play for Dallas.

  • But then again, I’d rather die than be Terrell Owens.

  • if he was trying to commit suicide, it would probably be a gun and not painkillers, plus even if he did resort to painkillers, i’m sure he would take more than 5.

  • Hell yeah.  Money helps.  Forget, “money can’t buy happiness.”  It can buy tropical paradise.

  • how many famous rock legends commit suicide? they’re worth well over 25 million dollars.

  • If you don’t think so then you obviously don’t know where to shop.

  • If you’re in a state of true despair…enough to commit suicide, 25 million reasons is nothing and that one reason is everything.

  • In fact, I would be willing to say with confidence that having lots of money is in no way shape or form connected with your level of happiness… our culture feeds us the lie that “if only” then we would be happy. If only I had a better job. If only I had this degree. If only I had a big screen television. If only I had someone to love me. Not that those things are inherently evil. But not one of them brings complete and never failing happiness.

I would be interested in seeing stats on the suicide rates of the weathly vs. the not so wealthy.

  • No matter how many pain killers he takes, he’s still going to be a pain in the ass.

  • If all I had was $25,000, I’d totally kill myself.

  • Maybe inadvertently, if financial troubles cause someone a lot of stress, but, other than that, I wouldn’t think so. =o

  • No and the publissit was stupid for saying that.

  • I would think your socioeconomic status would have an impact on your well-being just because it’s one less thing to worry about, but in the end if you’re unhappy , you’re unhappy and money can’t make you happy

  • nope…

    Elvis

    Marilyn Monroe

    come to mind

  • hasn’t it been shown that having money tends to depress individuals more, and so people with more money are more likely to commit suicide?  Or maybe I’m just making all that up…

  • Money or no money…anyone can still feel “bad enough” to commit suicide.

  • money cant bring you everything. it just brings you more problems and whatnot actually. in the end anyway, it doesn’t matter how much money you made, it’s how many people you’ve influenced in life. i mean to most people money probably is everything, but time will come where they will hit rockbottom and realize what they did wrong.

  • That’s one of the funniest things that I’ve ever heard. Haven’t all these people heard the saying that money can’t buy happiness?? Come on, folks!

  • Money doesn’t buy happiness, if you’re unhappy and depressed, money can’t save you.

  • nope…. money doesn’t make you happy.

  • no, because money isn’t what makes people truly happy. money also does not cure depression.

  • It could. But the tendencies are too strong to disregard, so I’d say it wasn’t for the money.

  • It would make a difference to me. I would love that kind of money.

  • D: You can have all the money in the world and still not be happy, I hear.

But I’ve also heard that money doesn’t hurt you, either. :3

  • Well, I think money helps people in general. But does it give happiness? Not exactly, maybe not for everyone. It’s like this, if I had 25 million dollars and could buy my exgirlfriend back and the love we seemed to share, that’s the only way it would buy me happiness. =/

  • Dont think so, however I believe money can help but does not buy happiness.  It helps.

  • I think you should do a post on the new trans fat ban….if someone takes my french fries from me I’ll kick ‘em in the shin!

  • Depends on how depressed they are… fame can lead to depression… and if you have fame, your gonna get lots of cash most likely…  But not doing well with money could cause the same thing… so it really depends… on what, I don’t know…

    Leave

  • no matter how rich a person is…it doesnt make their life any better. In my opinion, his life was probably better before he had the money. And no rational person would disagree.

  • if youre still depressed, i dont think money will really matter to u

  • No

  • If I had 50 million, it wouldn’t have made a difference.

  • Oh hell no.

  • No.  Money doesn’t solve everything.

  • he drank beer, and took two pain killers….he is totally against medicine but his hand was hurting him and he was drunk, took pain killers…police were called and they came in and asked him if he tried to commit suicide, to which he replied “yeah I took all of them!” and thats how it got started

  • Money doesn’t by happiness. It could be part of the reason he supposedly tried to commit suicide. Otherwise, having money wouldn’t make me any more happy. People these days…

  • Not really. If you’re depressed enough to want to die, you aren’t really worried about money.

  • Normal a person who makes that much money has more pressure in what he or she does, so to an extent it might.

  • Depends, but I think that in most cases that if the person really does want to die, then they’ll die, with or without money.

  • No. It just doesn’t work that way. Anyone who thinks money can buy happiness is crazy.

    -Guru on the Hill

  • haha naive really but no definatly not
you would think making so much u can buy hapiness but u cant really
although the other part to me is that there really NEVER is a reason to comitt suicide because there is definatly always someone who has it so much worse then you do
and that there is always someone who cares about u
but he could have tried u can never know for sure but its hard when ur famous cuz people see u all the time and they think ur perfect and then u start to feel that u need to live up to that expectation and no one can because u cant be perfect

    (( sorry i went on too much didn’t i? ))

  • fuck it. for 25 million, i can pay someone else to commit suicide.

  • Hmm… maybe, if you’re depressed cuz of debt or something, but other than that, money wouldn’t help. If you’re depressed sbout anything else, nothign seems to matter…

  • Nah, you can have all the money in the world and still be unhappy with your life — or conversely, you can have absolutely no money and be satisfied, like this homeless guy I talk to sometimes.

  • Ask someone without it and you’re sure to get a different story than from someone who has it. In this day and age, believe it or not, there are still ignornant people out there who truly believe they would be happier if they had money. What a cruel joke that is to play on dumb people.

  • I guess when you are of T.O-status, you have your issues and problems, just like everybody else..only a different set of troubles.

Living here, in Dallas, I am highly familiar with some of the Dallas Cowboy’s antics. I am not impressed.
Too bad the good guys get overshadowed by the bad ones.

    Go figure, huh?

    L

  • Money cannot make you happy.

  • suicide is stupid…if you want to die, at least do it in a cool way…like go skydiving without the parachute…or jump off a cliff…or go fight a war…or see if you can blow something cool up…

I mean if you decide how your going to die, at least make it cool…

  • I dont know the are making such a big stink over this. David Hasselhoff’s daughter supposedly tried too, they reported that she hadnt and all was dismissed.

  • Money can’t buy happiness, so no, I don’t think money would be a hinderance if someone wanted to commit suicide.

  • no

  • For some people perhaps money would be enough. However, it is usually not about the money. It’s about the opposite sex, fitting in, hormornal imbalance, etc etc.

  • Money doesn’t bring happiness. You can be filthy rich and be miserable.

  • no, money can sometimes be the cause of suside

  • How is it that you get to be on featured *at least* three times everyday??

When everyone else is one there like once.

  • No. Money does not equal happiness. Often it’s the people who have everything who are the most depressed/emotionally unstable. Possibly due to the pressure and stress.

  • Of course not, but playing for Dallas probably would be a good reason to commit suicide.   JUST KIDDING, a little bit anyway.

I think it was a publicity stunt.  Men don’t usually kill themselves with pills, that is the way women kill themselves.

  • No, a person can have millions of dollars and still be empty inside.

  • not really, it’s more or about a chemical imbalance.
FYI: most people who try to OD on Tylenol, do not die of the OD. They just end up with liver failure, which is a slower, more painful way to go.

  • yeah; i think it would probably up the odds…

  • no absolutely not. and i remember my dad, who is a psychiatrist, commenting on his overly-aggressive and erratic behavior a few years back. he said the guy seems bipolar manic-depressive and it wasn’t surprising to either of us to hear the accusation that he overdosed on purpose.

  • I don’t think money really makes that much of a difference, rich people can get depressed and suicidal just as easily as anyone else.

  • Probably not, but obviously Dr. Pepper is a reason to go on living.

  • nope, it may even cause it, you never know, anyone can be depressed.

  • Since depression and suicidal tendencies very seldom have anything to do with *rational* thought and everything in the world to do with an *illness,* I doubt if money is going to make that much of a difference.

  • i think he intended to use it as way get attention, not to kill himself. i guess selling 2 books, completely disrupting 2 teams, the sharpie incident, and the cowboy logo incident werent enough for him.

  • No.  Owens’ publicist’s comment was completely retarded.

    Hope

  • If anything, people who “have it all” are more likely to experience extreme depression, once they realize, that they have achieved everything they set out to do, and they still don’t feel fulfilled.  I think success can be a very empty experience for some people.

  • heck no! While money can make some things easier, it doesn’t take away a void or a blandness in life . . .

  • And also, I have to agree with Hope Elizabeth’s comment.  That was a retarded thing to say.  Who would LIVE for their 25 million dollars?   What an empty existence.

  • No. A person without money is just as likely to commit suicide as someone with money.

    -Jacob

  • Well.. honestly yes and no. Matter on the person, really.

  • Nope, those could very well be 25 million reasons to commit suicide.

  • No suicide is rarest in poor none industrialized nations and most common in the richest nation on earth. Money has nothing to do with it

  • Does that mean I only have eight reasons every hour to not kill myself?

    That sucks.

  • And you know everyone here wishes they had 25 million dollars.

  • It always seems that happiness doesn’t come from making big accomplishments or getting money. All sorts of people commit suicide.

  • No. That inner pain, angst, it’s a real bitch.

Not based on reality by the perception of others.

Oh the ego is a sticky bitch she is!

  • I don’t think money has anything to do with happiness.  I think alot of pepole think that they will find fulfillment once they reach this certain level of wealth.  It’s simply not true.  You have to find worth in the things around you and in what you involve yourself in.  You have to have worth in you.

  • I don’t think it would make a difference at all… people w/ promicing lives who are smart and have lots of friends have committed suicide, money and success has nothing to do w/ it…

  • Just depends on the personality.  Some people wouldn’t be able to handle the stress which accompanies great wealth.

Studies have shown that more affluent people are at LESS risk for suicide than those who are economically disadvantaged.  But it’s the affluent suicides who make the headlines.

  • Give me those 25 million dollars and I won’t kill myself!

  • It just might increase the pressure and stress….so……”maybe.”

  • Suicide is a result of a persons coping mechanisms being overwhelmed and being unable to keep the person alive.. all the money in the world can’t save someone that deosn’t want or doesn’t think they can be saved…

  • No, but it does make an impact on how many people care if they do.

  • money does not equal happiness.

“Owens blamed a combination of hydrocodone, a generic form of Vicodin, with all-natural supplements for making him ill.

“It’s very unfortunate for it to go from an allergic reaction to a suicide attempt,” he said.”

  •  > If someone has that much moolah around, HOW could you think about suicide?! Too much to do, with that kind of cash!!

    Peace

  • None at all. They have just as much pressure in their lives as everyone else, sometimes more.

  • Yes. A person who makes 25 million smackers a year can afford really, really good psychotherapy. Or he can distract himself with wine, women, and lots of really cool toys. While we’re all familiar with the rich celebrities who commit suicide, I’m sure the statistics bear out that far more poor people than rich people commit suicide.

  • no, the “25 million reasons” statement was just a silly excuse by the publicist to shrug off the claims of suicide.

  • Fame and wealth often DRIVE people to commit suicide.

  • Fame and wealth often DRIVE people to commit suicide.

  • Absolutely not. A person could have everything in the world and still want to commit suicide.

  • He recently suffered a broken wrist. He will go to work on Sunday anyway. Most of us don’t go to work if we have PMS.

  • of course not.

  • He just wants attention…He has never been happy at any place he’s been…he doesn’t make any friends on any of the teams he’s been on…Someone needs to stand up to him…who cares about the money part…he just needs an attitude adjustment in the worse way….

  • some differance, yes.

  • not if you are an asshole to start with…

  • Yeah, not everyone making 25 mils including those who committed suicide!

  • Yes, it makes a difference. You’re likely to rely on that huge amount of money if you have it, but we all know that money doesn’t actually make you happy. When you think you’re supposed to be happy but you’re not, it definitely can push you into a depression.

  • Not if they are desperate or depressed enough. I hope that he really didn’t commit suicide… it must be a terrible mindset to be in if he actually got to that point.

  • what’s up i’m still pretty new so just looking around checkingout people pages and leaving comments

  • Could go either way.

  • No, how many actors and actresses have made at least that much and committed suicide anyway?

  • Not at all.

Hell for all we know, that may be one of the reasons he attempted suicide (if that’s really what happened).

  • money can’t buy happiness

  • no

  • Everyone has troubles

  • No, I think it has more to do with how someone views their worth or their situation.  Or sometimes it is a chemical imbalance in their brain.  Many women suffering from post-partumn depression have suicidal thoughts and it has nothing to do about their situation/life.

  • tsk.. maybe, he’s just trying to get more publicity..

    go e-a-g-l-e-s!!! =P

  • Through histories earliest times no matter the riches,  the education and being in the prime of ones life can fill the void of hopelessness and unhappiness.

  • No, because money isn’t everything. There is so much more in life.

  • Sometimes, but most likely no.

  • I think that making $25 million dollars means that your private life is going to go public whether it’s appropriate or not. I feel badly for him – he is going through something possibly that the news doesn’t need to broadcast.

  • No. Suicide is not a formula.

“I want to kill myself because life is not worth living.”

“Okay, well what if I offered you 25 million dollars to live instead.”

    “Uh, you got a deal!”

    No. Just…no.

    ~Victoria

  • It was obviously a publicity stunt. Probably from jealousy.

  • not a difference at all

  • no. its all those steriods….

  • Pft. No.

  • ehh. maybe. but if i had more money i wouldn’t kill myself.. not like i’m planning on it anyways

  • It’s like they always say, money can’t buy you happiness.

  • no, money doesn’t buy your happiness. And I agree with xxxJOANNxxx, if he was really trying to overdose or kill himself, I’m sure he would’ve wnated to get it over with and use a gun or something, and even if he did want to kill himself on an overdose, it would’ve been the whole damn bottle of pills washed down with some alcohol, not 5 painkillers….

  • well i sopose that if u did have 25,000,000 then u wouldnt realy be that depressed but then again with that money you’d get a lot of dates leading to marrage and then death or divorce…. then you have quite a reason… i think

  • if a person is going to commit suicide no matter how rich they are their still going to do it .. it isn’t a money thing although money troubles maybe contribute to it .. it’s a mental heath thing .. life is just a test of how long these people can hold on

  • No. Some of the most unhappy people in the world are rolling in it.

  • I think so, yeah. You give someone that is suicidal $25 million and I doubt they’re likely to try it.

  • NO and I don’t really think he did try to commit suicide.

  • Absolutely not.

25 million bucks doesn’t cure depression.

  • no. it’s an inner struggle.

  • money has little effect on your mental health unless you are severly lacking in it (poverty level poor not “wah my moommy didn’t get me a new ipod”)
Studies show that sich people are not any happier than those with moderate income. Discuss.

  • i think it might make a difference.

  • I’m a guidance counselor trying to reach out to troubled teens who are being bullied by their peers. Everyone needs to have a sense of feeling good, and I hope to rebuild the lives of those in need. Bullying is a serious problem in the United States. At the school that I work at I see children be so cruel to one another that my heart aches with sorrow. I, as a child, was bullied because of my spanish accent. I’m a Mexican-American woman, and I often feel like the culture is not respected as it should be. That is beside the point, so I’ll try to stick to the subject. People are constantly being judged by theirs peers. It is human nature to scruntinize another to feel self-worth. This is not the proper way to feel good about yourself. Besides, the high in which you get at another person’s expense will make you doubt yourself even more. Whether you are a bully, or a victim, I can help you. Please comment me back. God Bless.

    -Dr. Lopez

  • No, definitely no.

  • Not really.

    [ariana]

  • we don’t live to spend money, we live to preserve our santity.

  • Nope. You only look at the negative anyway when you think like that. When I thought about it I thought about other things than money to try to depress myself.

  • LOL @ RagamuffinKing. OK, the publicist is just talking out of her sphincter; it’s not something to actually think about so much as a diversion from the truth.

  • Definitely not.

  • no… in fact, often the high achievers are the ones who commit suicide do to the pressure upon themselves

  • No way. Just cause you have money doesn’t mean you can’t be sad. In cases, it can give you more of a reason to be sad.
