Halloween
I was just reading an article on the 700club.com. The article was trying to answer the question “Should Christians Celebrate Halloween?” Some Christians struggle with the holiday because of the basic theme.
Should Christians celebrate Halloween?
Comments (219)
why not.
Cool second….!
I don’t have a problem with it. It is all a fantasy, make believe and fun.
I really don’t give a fuck what they can or can’t celebrate… at least I love Halloween to death!
Of course, it’s the day of the dead.
the basic theme of spending time with your kids and meeting your neighbours and doing something fun as a community?
we over-spiritualize everything.
Yes.
It started out as a Christian holiday, so yeah.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I am a Chrisitan, and I see nothing wrong with going out and getting free candy, dressed up in some costume.
I don’t celebrate Hallowe’en, because I view it as a holiday specifically set apart to worship and honor Satan, and while I acknowledge Satan’s existence and real, potent power, I do not worship him.
I celebrate the bountiful harvest God has blessed us with – my church has a Harvest Fest(ival) every Oct. 31, when we set up game-and-prize booths manned by young people in tasteful constumes, that the children of our church and neighborhood around out church can come and not have to worry at all. I love dressing up and getting candy (heck yes!!), but I do not support what Hallowe’en orginally stands for.
Before I was a Christian I loved Halloween, but not anymore. I love the season, but not the holiday. So I don’t celebrate it. Some Christians do or they do a Fall Fest type of thing which I don’t mind, but for myself I won’t celebrate it because it is a holiday that is pagan and has no real redeeming value. It celebrates fear and death. That is just my view. Sure Christmas has pagan roots and a lot of it is a celebration of materialism, but to Christians and myself it is a celebration of Jesus’ birth and for that it has reedeming value.
Dressing up and begging for candy….hmmm..works for me. I’m in.
*snort*
Some are saying it started out Christian…Some are saying it’s about Satan…
It’s the Wiccan New Year, is what it is. A time of death, harvest, worship. Quite lovely, actually.
If you draw the line at actually being a crazed killer or worshiping satan, why not?
ryc: I know! I just finished watching Andy Griffith… or well hearing it.. it was in the background!
Im a Christian…. I grew up doing the “fall fest” thing…i have never been trick or treating…. but now that I am older and can make my own decsions…. i love it… i love getting dressed up and going downtown….. yeah…im sure there are “some” people who use it as a day to worship satan… but for the most part I think its all good fun….
Here is my answer:
“The Halloween observance originated with the Celtic Druids around 700 B.C. The Druids believed that the souls of the dead returned to inhabit the bodies of the living on October 31st . Villagers donned masks and costumes and paraded to the outskirts of their towns to trick roving spirits into leaving.
Later, October 31st was incorporated into the Christian calendar as All Hallow’s Eve, honouring all martyrs and saints. Children wearing costumes offered to fast for departed souls in exchange for money or an offering. Irish Catholics fleeing from the potato famine in the 1840s introduced the Halloween observance to the United States, including the practice of carving jack-o’lanterns. At that time, the favourite pranks included tipping over outhouses whilst someone was in it! and unhinging fence gates.
The word itself, “Halloween,” actually has its origins in the Christian Church. It comes from a contracted corruption of All Hallows Eve. November 1, “All Hallows Day” (or “All Saints Day”), is a Christian day of observance in honour of saints.
” and “trick-or-treating is thought to have originated not with the Irish Celts, but with a ninth-century European custom called souling. On 2nd November, All Souls Day, early Christians would walk from village to village begging for “soul cakes,” made out of square pieces of bread with currants. The more soul cakes the beggars would receive, the more prayers they would promise to say on behalf of the dead relatives of the donors. At the time, it was believed that the dead remained in limbo for a time after death, and that prayer, even by strangers, could expedite a soul’s passage to heaven.”
That is what I always learned about why we “celebrate” Halloween in school.
Halloween is fucking awesome.
Christmas is a pagan holiday too. Smoke on THAT sucker, Christians.
I’d rather just skip the whole thing, but I wouldn’t keep my kid from dressing up and getting candy. Maybe drive them to see friends and family so they could show off their costumes.
Why not…it’s not like we’re going to go out and commit mortal sins or something…it’s all about the candy.
And for the record, my brother was born on Halloween. Lucky bitch.
‘Course…my parents slapped the middle name of “Martin” on him, after Martin Luther. October 31st is, after all, Reformation Day. Yeah, I bet most of the holy-rollers didn’t know that.
I agree! Like The Three Stooges… I haven’t seen an episode of that in ages, but my brother who’s four years younger than me and my dad and even one of his friends have been up at like 4 or 5 in the morning and caught a rerun of it and have woken the whole house up laughing so hard. It’s crazy.
It’s free candy for kids. Christmas are lots of gifts for kids.
I don’t know anyone who actually celebrates either as anything more than that, most Christians don’t celebrate it as JESUS`s BIRTHDAY OH YEAH, they acknowledge it but no one gives a shit about holidays anymore.
People who down Halloween or anything else for any other reason needs the stick out of their ass. People are always wanting to bitch and make a big deal about things.
Heheehe!!!
“Halloween’s origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in)
he Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. For a people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter.”

I myself- enjoy the parties…
This year we are going to have a pumpkin carving party a week before with good hot food and drinks out in the studio… It is a crisp beautiful time of the year here in the East…
Why not have fun with Halloween- it is just another day.
XoxoxoX
RYC: Oh, quite! It’s a lot of fun, though it can be pretty somber. Celebrated on the full moon, though, not necessarily on the 31st. It’s just so interesting to see the evolution of a perfectly nice holiday into something almost considered evil…
Anyway, I never did answer the question. I see absolutely nothing wrong with Christians celebrating Hallowe’en, especially not in the fun trick-or-treating sense! It’s become rather corporate, in that regard…If a Christian wanted to celebrate in the true Samhain fashion, that would be all right too, so long as they went into it with respect and an open mind.
Christmas, Halloween, Easter, May Day…All very pagan holidays.
Oh, and Samhain is much more ancient than 700-2000 years old. Just…So you guys get your facts straight. It ain’t called the Old Religion for nothing!
No its not the Wiccan New Year. Wicca is a newly made up religion, I believe it is not even a 100 years old. Wicca is based on the old druid religion of the Celtic tribes, but it is not the same faith. The druid beliefs were totally wiped out well over a thousand years ago. They did not believe in writing anything down, so what the really believed is lost to history.
Sure…why not? Kids love it. It’s a fun!
Celebrate? If you mean should Christian parnets allow their kids to go and get free candy from neighbors I don’t necessarly see a problem with that. But if you mean “celebrate” as in set aside the day and remember it as having some religious significance, then definately not.

See, that’s funny, because I’ve been studying for years and years, and haven’t heard that from anyone but Christians wanting to destroy the old faith. Wicca and other forms of paganism have been around for thousands upon thousands of years before Christianity. Neo-Paganism is the resurgence of the old ideals, which may be what you’re referring to…
holidays mean certain things for certain people.
halloween to some is a celebration of the dead.
to others its a celebration of harvest.
christmas to some is the birth of jesus.
to others its just a fat man bringing gifts to children and if they fuck up they get coal in their stockings….
lol.
Hey, whatever it takes for sexy Christian girls to dress up in skimpy cheerleader, nurses, maids, and toga outfits…
Who is to say who should or should not do anything…There is not one person on this planet qualified to be considered an authority on right and wrong, that alone belongs to a higher power, all we can do… is do our best to live our lives well…
I don’t see a problem with it, really.
Yes – My family has always been christians as far back as I can remember and we always dressed up and did the whole halloween thing – Nothing wrong with it.
Also – the Christmas Tree is a Pagan tradition – Most christians have a tree as far as I can see.
“that’s funny, because I’ve been studying for years and years”
Super_Piggie
There is no nice why to tell you this next time you study something try reading something on the subject. Start you education with the link below
http://www.religioustolerance.org/wic_hist.htm
I don’t see why not… it’s not a particularly “Jewish” holiday either, but that never stopped me from going out and begging for piles of candy.
And bittersunday is right – Christmas and Easter also have Pagan origins. So how about that?
Ok I forgot to link it here it is
I adore the fact that you’ve quoted one source whose own sources are not the most reliable (Silver RavenWolf) nor the most unbiased to the craft (Gerald Gardener) (which say that the religion began in prehistory anyway) to combat my years of experience and hundreds of texts…But that’s all right.
You can believe what you want. I came to share knowledge, both by giving and taking…not to dispute my beliefs. The information I’ve given was to try and give people a better idea of the origins of the mystery associated with the season, which can be hard to come by at times, and is the basis for many Christians’ uneasy feelings about celebration at this time of year.
And what I’ve taken away is the knowledge that some people will just never be open to an idea that’s different from their own.
*shrugs*
For real, she’s correct. Yes, paganism is old but Wicca is indeed very young. This is something generally not disputed in the Wiccan/pagan community, you’re the first person who’s apparently educated on the subject that I’ve heard say otherwise.
You have no sources at all and you know it.
My source was none biased and I can flood you with more, all saying the same thing. Wicca in not the old faith of the druids and you should be happy about that. I read the descriptions of that old faith from the only sources that were written down in the area when it was still alive. From the Romans and Greeks. Human sacrifice, trial by torture, woman were considered property. Yeah those were the days of the old ways. The old ways were brutal, wicca has no relationship to them, it is a new religion.
Halloween now isn’t what it used to be. If anything, celebrating halloween nowadays constitutes a *mockery* of demons, devils, werewolves…. Think about it: A bunch of little, helpless kids dress up as monsters and then kindly plea or beg for candy. If devils, werewolves, vampires, etc. were real then they’d probably be really offended.
Maybe Christians can take the opportunity to mock evil and show evil beings that there are non-violent alternatives (i.e. eating candy instead of eating human flesh)
*shrugs* personally I don’t care so much as long as they dedicate the day to the Lord like they should every other day. I mean if their doing it for the glory of God and fellowship with the neighbors is it really that big of a deal?
No matter which way you argue it’s origins, I think it is what you make of it. It can be evil, or it can be fun, I choose FUN!!!
Sorry for turning this into a Wicca basing session.
Yeah, sorry about all that wenching, Dan ol’ buddy.
I’m not worshipping evil, or the devil…
I’m not worshipping anything.
I’m having a good time, with my friends…we watch horror films and eat candy until we get so sick we want to vomit.
I don’t think God is going to condemn me for that.
Sure! It’s not un-Christian to do so…unless you are J.W. (no offense to you guys) and then I say whatever floats your boat. It’s one of the highlights of my year to dress my kids as cute things and take pictures of them. It’s all in fun.
BTW, I am a Christian.
RYC: You mean you didn’t invent the question Dan???
Nope, no celebrating halloween, it is clearly the most pagan holiday on the books. Besides I think it has become just one more over commercialized holliday about what we can get from other people.
3 comments in a row…I feel honored and stuff Dan! 30 to 40 unsubscribers a week??? Damn! And still making featured everyday…very impressive Dan.
i’m from a Christain home, and we always celebrated halloween.
the only thing that my parents really enforce was that we were not allowed to dress up like witches or other scary stuff. i was always a princess, or an indian or something like that.
so that’s kind of a good compromise for the holiday i think.
No. It’ll leave more candy for us pagan kids. Heh heh heh…
I like reading all these comments.I think it is a heathen celebration.I went “spookin” (as we Pennsylvania Dutch called it) as a child but do not celebrate Halloween now.I do not judge Christians who wish to celebrate it.
rufioXlover made a good point “holidays mean certain things for certain people.”
I don’t have a problem with it. When I was a kid we mostly went to my church and did the whole fesitval and games thing, which to be honest I thought was more fun than the traditional door to door.
why not?
I don’t know why they’d have a problem with it. Christians took over every other holiday.
I enjoy Halloween. I really hate how we have to over-spiritualize everything. And just to spite the mainstream Christians, I observe the other feast-days that fall on pagan holidays (Solstices, Lughnasadh, Beltaine, et cetera) just because I’m a Christian who as a fucking open mind.
Has^
> Play it for what it is worth…. It is a childs holiday, these days…. Anyone wanting to stop observing it or Christmas, because of supposed religious overtones is getting flat knees from worshipping Scrooge to vigorously…. Go put your sour attitude toward some deserving adult, not the kids!! Spoil sport!!! Sour grapes, as it used to be said….
Peace
The walrus is indeed great! Yay open minds!
i’m in it for the fun much like non-christians are into christmas for it’s overall spirit. i don’t participate in any witchcraft or worship the devil or anything. and really, isn’t halloween about remembering our ancestors? or something like that. *shrugs*
i think that if you want to celebrate halloween… and you practice a religion that tells you not to… you should give up the religion not the holiday… then again… christmas and halloween are a pretty close toss up…
I’m christian, and I still have plans to celebrate Halloween….
My way of balancing it all out is to dress up in my finest Catholic School Girl outfit!
<3333333Rachel
Just so you know…. I am a subber for life! I may not have something to say about every single question that you pose… but you can bet your ass that I read them all…. I LOVE YOUR SITE MAN! Keepin’ it real one question at a time!
<33333333333Rachel
Why do Christians have to be so stupid. Does it suspend IQ?
why not
Nope, no celebrating halloween, it is clearly the most pagan holiday on the books. Besides I think it has become just one more over commercialized holliday about what we can get from other people.
Posted 9/28/2006 at 1:10 AM by Daddieo_HD
How can something be the “most Pagan” holiday? It either has Pagan origins, or it doesn’t. Idiot.
And by the by…my parents are supa Christian. Missionaries to a 3rd world country. My daddio is a pastor and theologian. Yet we still love Halloween and make a big fuss over it every year.
And we never did the lame “cop out” and say “Okay you guys can’t dress up as vampires or witches ‘cos that’s evil”. Heeeell no. My brother has been a vampire every year, my sister is always a black cat, and I’ve been a vampire, a evil sorceress, a devil, and even an insane axe murderer in 1998.
I’d much rather have dressed up as a kickass vampire when I was a wee kid than a nancy princess. Yuck. I was an awesome kid. No dumbass princess costumes for MY family.
I read a few………..come to my site and question it……..you will be amazed at what happens if you do……….which most of you want, even if you come, on this subject and many more
…….but I hope you will question It…….Life…..and quite using this site for a question…..but an answer……….:)
yeah, dont listen to the 700 club, do what YOU want. HAVE FUN and GET CANDY!
I am a Christ follower and I consider myself a strong one. But I am different in that I don’t just take doctrine for the truth; I research things on my own.
Halloween started as a day to honor those who have passed from this world to a spiritual one. Mankind has totally messed up the beauty and respect of this holiday. It is the ones, on BOTH “sides” that ruin it for everyone else. So I believe it is a personal choice and no one has the right to judge another for having some harmless fun on what is just one designated day of the year.
I just realized all you write about is a freakin random topic, and end it with a yes or no alternatum (man my spelling is bad)
So here you go dimwitted fool, a topic for your next pointless blog.
Birds with wings
Birds have wings, and humans don’t. Making us humans look stupid for having a bigger and more developed brain, yet we cannot find a way to fly without a motorized vehicle. Should birds be allowed to use their wings, or have a law passed against showing off their flying abilities?
See anyone idiot can do this. And in fact this one is a bit humorous, a parody to your crap if I may…
I’m Christian and I love Halloween. I’ve heard dozens of stories about the origins of the Halloween and its possible pagan roots, but most of those stories are fake or actually completely unrelated. Moreover, they don’t matter anyway because the important thing is how the day is CURRENTLY celebrated. As it stands, it’s just a nice time to dress up, get wild, eat candy and socialize. I can’t imagine anything wrong with or more fun than that.
I don’t see why not. I don’t think that anyone really “celebrates” halloween, it’s just some stupid invention by the candy companies as far as I’m concerned…I don’t really believe in the devil, so I don’t think of it as the “devil’s day” as most people would.
I don’t know. Should Christians be able to shop at Walmart?
From what I hear, modern-day Halloween traditions started with African tribes, who would put on masks to ward OFF Satan, not worship him. I think people look too far into things.. Halloween is a fairly light, superficial holiday that’s mostly for fun.. and I love it. I can’t see why so many people are against it. We’ve had people in our town try to ban it, even.
I don’t. But then, Halloween is basically something Americans do. Even though I’ll get jumped on cos it was originally celtic, or something.
Ask Clarence. Everytime a bell rings an angel gets his wings. I say ring those bells and eat your candy.
Good question. Should Christians celebrate evil? That’s a tough one.
Nah – It’s time not to…
I think you can celebrate halloween…people celebrate Christmas and don’t believe in Jesus Christ.
Actually, bittersunday, I DID know that.
And why not? It may have started out as a pagan holiday or whatever, but obviously it isn’t anymore. It’s not like people are handing out pagan chants to say instead of candy. I’m a pastor’s kid, for goodness sake, and I grew up trick-or-treating every year.
I think all the holidays are so commercialized. Its fun when your little to dress up cute and get candy. I think Christians can celebrate in a fun way. Shouldnt do any harm, unless they are in to the Witch and creepy stuff.
Regardless of all these awesome other comments that are up here that hold actual fact and information…I think Halloween is awesome. As a little kid, we always trick-or-treated, with the exception of one year my grandma insisted on taking us to a ‘Fall Fest’ and I maintain t this day that that was the biggest waste of a Halloween in my life. D: I’ll only get to trick-or-treat and be a kid so long, I think we all deserve to have fun and get candy; it’s not like we’re doing anything immoral.
Yes!
sure, why not? i’ve celebrated it all my life and i’m Christian
When we were little it was one of the biggest holidays of the year. Nothing was attached to it except that we could dress up and go house to house asking for candy. The community would open up, families would put out a pumpkin for each member of the family, and there was no worries about children walking the streets or candy being tainted. It was fun. Even my own children grew up in a fairly “safe” atmosphere. Now…I am not sure. I don’t think my grandchildren will be able to enjoy the holiday like I did. Sad.
the 700 club really needs a chill pill…
WELL NO. THERE ARE SO MANY DEMONIC CONONTATIONS LINKED WITH HALLOWEEN. YES THE CHILDREN ARE INNOCENT, BUT THE MEANING OF THERE COSTUMES TELLS ANOTHER STORY. ALL OVER AGAIN IT’S THE MEDIAS PRY FOR OUR MINDS. THE STORY’S OF WITCHES AND GOULS AND OTHER FALSEHOODS THAT OUR OFTEN LINKED WITH HALLOWEEN ARE NOT RIGHT EITHER. AS A YOUNG CHILD UP TO THE AGE OF 5 I THINK CELEBRATING HALLOWEEN BY GOING OUT FOR SOME CANDY EARLIER ON IN THE AFTERNOON IS ACCEPTABLE. BUT AS ONE GETS OLDER, AND BECOMES A MORE EXPERIENCED CHRISTIAN THEY MAY BEGIN TO REALIZE THE THE ENVIROMENT THEY ARE IN DURING THIS HOLIDAY. NO, THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH CANDY, OR DRESSING UP. SOMETIMES IT’S JUST THE WAY PEOPLE GO ABOUT IT, AND AS TO DATE HALLOWEEN IS TO WITCHCRAFTY AND DEMONIC IN MY OPINION.
ANYWAYS THAT’S MY OPINION, AND THERE ARE MANY OTHER GOOD ONES ON HERE TOO.
TAKE CARE
It’s just a fun little holiday, I don’t understand why so many Christians have so many problems with Halloween. There are no witches, Satan isn’t any more powerful on that day, it’s all made up.
Personally, I like Halloween. It’s about the only day of the year you can run around with a mask on your face asking for candy from people you don’t know.
I know some Christians that don’t celebrate it and some that do. And of some of those that do, when they were growing they weren’t allowed to dress as the devil or a witch or whatnot, only “cute” costumes like a fairy. I think if you want to, that’s fine.
Of course. Why not?
yeah they should
Halloween is Pagan
Christmas is Pagan
Easter is Pagan
Really doesnt matter much
Hell yes! I don’t care where it originated… why should all the Satanist and atheist kids get all the candy? Christian kids like candy too. And besides that, who doesn’t like to dress up and scare people? There is just no substitute for that…and if your child starts drinking blood and going into trances after one night of running around under a sheet, asking for candy, your child had a serious probem anyways.
Sure, why not? It’s just dressup. The serious Christian Holiday, though, is All Saints Day, the next day, and in the Catholic religion is a holy day of obligation (which means you have to go to Church).
Halloween was originaly a Catholic holiday. So why the hell not?
I dont think so. The bible says not to come to close to Evil. Hallowween may look harmless on the outside but once you get a better understanding of it you realize how evil it is.
I love fall and celebrate it every year. For me Halloween is a time to see little kids dress up, hand out candy, and maybe even eat a caramel apple or two. It’s what I make it. Same with Christmas, in my home it’s much more than just presents — it’s a celebration of our faith.
^^Now you’re too close to evil…I just posted right next to you!
Uhh… BitterSunday… Christmas is NOT a pagan holiday… >.< (I cant stand ignorance!) Only thing remotely pagan about the holiday is that there is a Santa involved. But Christmas is all about Jesus’ birth onto the earth… God manifested into the flesh, his son. So… please know what you are talking about.
But Halloween, I celebrate it and I am a christian! Its all about fun, and getting to dress up and go get free candy, and fun parties….
“Bible”… “too”… “Halloween”…wow….don’t say it Miguel, don’t say it Miguel.
-I’ll behave.
Yes, but they should have to dress up as Satan
I’m so of the same mind as RiceBunny
Girls, girls….
Christmas is in very large part a pagan holiday. One of the church leaders way back when thought he’d christianize it by adopting it and integrating it into the surrounding pagan culture.
Through the years much of Christianity and its celebrations have come from the culture as much, and at times more so, than from God. For some reason, like we see today, “leaders” think it’s a good idea to go with the flow, to make the religion meaningful to the culture in order to win converts.
And that’s why we have religion instead of people of God.
I celebrate Halloween, but much less so than I did formerly. And Christians should also know why Christmas is celebrated on December 25, and it has nothing to do with Christ’s likely date of birth. Saturnalia, a Roman holiday of debauch, was celebrated in December; early Christians tacked Christmas onto the end of Saturnalia.
-Guru on the Hill
The entire world is blinded that they think God thinks its ok to celebrate pagan holidays. His word says otherwise, and is very, very, clear.
christian celebrate a log of pagan holidays, so why not halloween. i mean theres yule (christmas), ostara (easter), etc. etc. why stop there?
Ah SweetSunday, Halloween isn’t just about fun (I can’t stand ignorance) It was originally all about how the spirits of the dead came to inhabit the bodies of the living.
You might say it no longer stands for that, but then I can say that nowadays all christmas is about is giving and recieving gifts, and it is very much Pagan
sweetsummerchaos* (Wrong user lol)
I think that celebrating Halloween, these days, no longer involves the witchcraft and devilry that it once celebrated. Now, children dress up in costumes (some scary, some not) and get candy from friends and neighbors. I see nothing wrong with that. If Christians are upset about the general theme, then they should dress their children and themselves up as neutral or holy things. Angels, animals, etc. But Halloween has turned into a children’s holiday, and is a time to teach them about how the world used to be. Halloween is but a history lesson at this point.
All of our holidays have lost meaning and have turned into days or seasons centered wholly around commerce.
I dont really think the origins matter “that much.” Its how you make it now, and if you want to celebrate it then okay (I do!!!). For me its not about celebrating the day but rather its about getting together with friends and enjoying one another’s presence!
Depends on what you put into it and where your heart is. I don’t think Christians should celebrate *Christmas* if they’re only in it for the gift giving.
We recently talked about something like this in my church, we’re offering an alternative to people who aren’t really sure what to do, it’s called House of Judgement.
Some people might think, since everything comes from God, it’s okay. But if a newer believer doubts and asks you what you should do, then you should not participate for his sake. If you had plans to go trick-or-treat-ing with a friend who was not a believer and the newer believer goes with you and if he asks what you should do, when you meet him, you would have to refuse to go for the newer believer’s sake.
For those who would like to know what this comes from, it’s 1 Corinthinans 10:23-33.
If Christians don’t celebrate Halloween, they shouldn’t celebrate Christmas either, because that’s a pagan holiday as well. If you don’t think it is, do some research on the festival of Christmas. No one knows when Jesus was born – and I gurantee it wasn’t snowing when he was born. The Christmas tree is an ancient druid symbol.
OH, and as a God-fearing, bible reading Christian, I love Halloween, I read the Harry Potter books and have played with tarot cards. Deal with it.
hell yeah!
That should be up to the indivisal person.
Its all about conviction.
EVERYONE EVERYONE SHOULD CELEBRATE HALLOWEEN!!! ITS THE GREATEST NIGHT OF THE YEAR!!! i’m going as a chesire cat =P… i luurve it so much i start thinking of costume ideas in like july
I just had to come and comment after I saw that people were saying Sahaim (Halloween) started off a a CHRISTIAN holiday. People… Sahaim started as PAGAN holiday, not christian! So many christians don’t realize that most of their holidays are simply modifications of paganism! Being a pagan I just couldn’t help but to comment. Its kind of funny because back in the early days of christianity the church took over pagan holidays to try and not only discredit the pagan religion and make people “forget” the real roots of their celebrations, but they needed a way for their rituals to be accepted so they had to take existing beliefs and modify em. I just think the old christian church would be happy to know that years later they have succeded in making some people forget.
Anyway, I think EVERYONE should celebrate Sahaim if they want! Its a wonderful holiday in both the old sense and the new sense. So many people attach WAY TOO MUCH religious prejudice to something like Sahaim. Heck, most people don’t even remember what its really about anyway. (thats obivous in the amount of incorrect comments!) And to be honest, its not exactly the most important part anyway. The important part is it is a reason for people to show good will to one another, to enjoy each others company, to celebrate the season, and to HAVE FUN! What ever “extras” you want to attach to its meaning is your own personal choice.
To those who think it shouldn’t be celebrated, i think you need to go out and eat some candy and chill out. Quit trying to turn something good into something evil! Go get yourself a fun costume and have a good time for once. Life is too short to be scared of such a fun day!
P.S. Just to insinuate the stigma, I love pagan debauchery… Oooooh yes, little 5 year olds running around in fairy wings and ninja turtle costumes is how we lure them to the way of Satan! When they munch their candied apples, the antichrist embodies their soul!! MUAHAHAHAHAH…
-your friendly neighbourhood Satanist.
AKA Sarcastic fool
oh and for anyone interested in some pagan background, they are welcome to visit my site and read this post,

Yes. This issue has always annoyed me to no end. Just who are these people who are supposedly “worshipping Satan” on Halloween? I mean, besides teenage wannabe goth kids? I’d seriously like to know where they are and how people know. Furthermore, even if people DO worship Satan on Halloween…. don’t those same people worship Satan for the other 364 days of the year? If so, I guess these fundamentalist Christians better just “check out.” I don’t get it.
I’m a Christian and I celebrate Halloween! God did not say that Christians should ignore holidays and have no fun. I will argue that point with anyone, especially Jehovah Witnesses, who think holidays should not be celebrated. The God I know wants a person to enjoy their life and have fun, and teach that to your children!!
Halloween was started because of All Hallow’s Day, being the saints. But, Halloween is a very strange morphing of the All Hallows idea. I don’t see why christians shouldn’t enjoy it though, as long as they aren’t doing anything evil.
Yes, it’s not like we’re worshipping the devil. We’re dressing up as something and getting candy, sounds good to me.
Yes! Why would you deny your child a night of getting candy and dressing up as their favorite superhero, etc? I went around parading as a witch, a ghost, and one year a Girl Scout that got hit by a car (my sister was the rich fat lady that did it), and I know that God condemns witchcraft and all that. As long as parents make sure their kids know that ghosts aren’t real and all that, then everything’s fine.
Christians should not try to make everything demonic. Puh-leaze.
Halloween has barely more pagen influence than Christmas or Easter.
Sure. It’s not like Halloween is really about worshiping Satan anymore (as if it ever was).

“To those who think it shouldn’t be celebrated, i think you need to go out and eat some candy and chill out.”
See now with that remark you are being just as self-rightous as you accuse some of these Christians of being. Most of the Christians on here who choose not to celebrate it have simply said exactly that, that they personally choose not to celebrate it, and leave it at that. I haven’t seen any of them condemning other people for choosing to do so. Often it’s the advocates for Halloween who end up doing the condemning, by saying that those who don’t celebrate Halloween just need to chill out, or labeling them as judgmental and narrow-minded or assume that they are afraid of it. Some people aren’t comofrtable with it, deal with it.
I myself am a Christian, and I do celebrate Halloween. My 6-year old is dressing up as Batman and my 2-year old will dress up as a tiger. But if I find out someone chooses not to, I’m not going to label them narrow-minded or judgmental or assume that they are afraid of it.
From all your resonses it seems that you try to come across as very open-minded. I think if you were half as open-minded as you think you are then you might not have such a hard time dealing with the fact that some people just don’t get the same joy out of Halloween that you do.
How ridiculous a question! There is nothing wrong with celebrating Halloween if you are a Christian! It comes from the pagan holiday Samhain which marked the end of summer and the beginning of winter. Nothing evil about that!
Personally, it is my favorite holiday and my favorite time of year!
Well, my parents asked me as a kid if I wanted to go trick-or-treating or just go to the mall and pick out my own candy. I picked the mall. I dressed up as a gypsy because my mom let me use her cool clothes and her theater make-up.
We’re a Christian family.
I don’t think I’ll let my little girl trick-or-treat because we don’t live in an actual neighborhood. We’re in a more rural area. And I don’t trust strangers giving out candy to my kids, but that’s from growing up in a city. I also don’t want to scare my kids with some of the displays people put up or costumes they wear. I don’t think it’s entertaining to be scared and I’m not going to force my children into thinking that either. I find the fall festivals and costume parties to be much more fun. Not to mention I live in NE Ohio and Oct. 31 sometimes includes SNOW. Walking around in some costume begging candy from perfect strangers in the bitter cold and dark. Does not sound like fun to me.
So yeah. Not a huge conviction about it, it just seems safer to party with people I know. I’ll get to know my neighbors when they look like themselves instead of half-crazed maniacs.
~Victoria
sure. I se eno reason why not.
Cowboy
Considering that it’s really a Pagan holiday to begin with? What do YOU think?
it’s not for me, but if someone else enjoys certain facets of it by all means go for it.
why not?
Halloween, is a wonderful time to have fun games with family and friends. Dress up the kiddywinks in costumes and collect candies. Carving pumpkins and going to festivals. I think that some people (not saying who) just take too much out of the movies they see, where evil witches and gooky goblins dance around a pot in hopes of a big red dude jumping out. It’s all how you view halloween and if you see the wonderful parts of halloween AND read back in history, then one should realize that it had NOTHING to do with santan worshiping… sheesh.. Makes me giggle to think that Christians who are to be open to forgiveness, should be openminded to other things.. lol… (And I’m not taking the micky out of christianity as I am one myself and I intend to paint the town red in my fairy costume hehe )

no
I’m not exactly a Halloween basher, but someone has yet to tell me what Halloween legitimately celebrates. I know what Christmas is for, what it celebrates, I know what we celebrate on the 4th of July, I know what Memorial Day is all about, I know what we celebrate on Easter and Thanksgiving and so on. But not Halloween. What is it exactly that Halloween celebrates?
No, Deut 18:9-14 is pretty straight forward in this regard. These things are not of God. We should be celebrating the festivals that God Himself gave us in Leviticus 23. Jesus did.
Basic theme?? making fun of ghosts and goblins?? good Lord!! Does anyone know why we have Halloween? any body ever heard of All Saints Day?? It’s on Novemebr 1st
http://www.catholic.com/thisrock/1998/9809fea2.asp
http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/675/10256
I say put on a costume and have a party!!
If they can celebrate christmas with a christmas tree, or the easter bunny in easter, than they can celebrate halloween cuz they are all centered around pagan ideas.
I hate halloween but not because i am a Christian. i just have a weak stomach and the make-up and costumes, mixed with too much candy in my belly, often freak me out.
Halloween is just a bit of fun. I don’t see why you wouldn’t want to.
Halloween is fun, lighten up.
i love halloween!
i dont see anything wrong. you dress up as some you idol or enjoy and ask people for candy.. whats so bad about that?
it’s the wiccan/pagan new year.
but it’s so commercialized now. *shrugs*
Everyone should.
its just for fun. some of these Christians are bordering on zealotry (is that a word?) going around hating halloween and burning harry potter books.
Of course they should plus strangers always have the best candy.
I’m Christian and I celebrate Halloween. Theres no harm in it or ‘ungodly’ things unless you’re doing something like a seance. And not many people other than fat ladies in turbans and Jr. High kids do that.
And the basic theme would be what?
Uhh… BitterSunday… Christmas is NOT a pagan holiday… >.< (I cant stand ignorance!) Only thing remotely pagan about the holiday is that there is a Santa involved. But Christmas is all about Jesus’ birth onto the earth… God manifested into the flesh, his son. So… please know what you are talking about.
But Halloween, I celebrate it and I am a christian! Its all about fun, and getting to dress up and go get free candy, and fun parties….

HAHA yes it is. Check your facts here before spouting off shit you know nothing about. Christians adopted the Pagan holiday of Winter Solstice for Christmas.
I can’t stand ignorance either.
Please know what YOU are talking about.
“The middle of winter has long been a time of celebration around the world. Centuries before the arrival of the man called Jesus, early Europeans celebrated light and birth in the darkest days of winter. Many peoples rejoiced during the winter solstice, when the worst of the winter was behind them and they could look forward to longer days and extended hours of sunlight.
In Scandinavia, the Norse celebrated Yule from December 21, the winter solstice, through January. In recognition of the return of the sun, fathers and sons would bring home large logs, which they would set on fire. The people would feast until the log burned out, which could take as many as 12 days. The Norse believed that each spark from the fire represented a new pig or calf that would be born during the coming year.
The end of December was a perfect time for celebration in most areas of Europe. At that time of year, most cattle were slaughtered so they would not have to be fed during the winter. For many, it was the only time of year when they had a supply of fresh meat. In addition, most wine and beer made during the year was finally fermented and ready for drinking.
In Germany, people honored the pagan god Oden during the mid-winter holiday. Germans were terrified of Oden, as they believed he made nocturnal flights through the sky to observe his people, and then decide who would prosper or perish. Because of his presence, many people chose to stay inside.”
I think it all depends on how you celebrate it. I personally don’t have a problem with people who want to celebrate Halloween(I was raised most places where its considered ok) I did have a thought about it the other day though…People spend so much time trying to teach their children not to take things from strangers, yet this one night of the year its acceptable and even encouraged. No wonder kids get mixed up about things sometimes
Halloween means holy evening so I think its ok to celebrate but it is a holy feast day so if it is celebrated at all it should be in a holy way
Should people listen to or read things on the 700 Club??
in response to BillBryant it is also known as all saints eve so what I celebrate on oct 31 is the saints
I don’t care. More candy for me if they don’t.
bittersunday:
The date that we celebrate the Birth of Jesus Christ might be pagan, but Christmas itself isn’t pagan. We worship Jesus Christ on that day, not Oden. The date of an holiday is not a way of determining whether something is Pagan or not. For you to be able to say it was Pagan, it would have to have the element of Paganism, not just the date. No, I don’t believe in Santa Claus. And I don’t think that whole tradition is all that relevent, but the point here is that Celebrating Jesus Christ is in no way Pagan. By the way, everybody is ignorent to something. Nobody knows everything except God. Ignorance can be fixed.
“Christians adopted the Pagan holiday of Winter Solstice for Christmas.”
Actually you don’t have your facts right either.
They did not adopt Winter Solstice, they borrowed certain elements of it and incorporated it into the celebration of Christmas. There is a big difference between borrwing elements from a tradition and adopting that tradition.
The word, Christmas did not even exist until the 11th century and it is Old English in origin and means the mass of Christ. There is evidence of festivals before this that celbrated the birth of Christ, but the holiday that we now call Christmas did borrow some, I stress some, and certainly not all traditions from the festival of Winter Solistice. Regardless, that is a far cry from adopting the tradition of Winter Solistice and hardly warrants calling Christmas pagan.
I don’t see why Christians shouldn’t celebrate halloween. Everyone at my church does, we don’t view it as a day to worship the devil (pfftsh to whoever made that up). It’s more of a day kids dress up in costumes to get candy & go to fright fests at Six Flags. Go Six Flags.
I don’t see why there has to be a problem with it.
I know a Christian family who don’t allow their kids to trick-or-trick until this past year. They’re devout. They finally came to their senses. Geesh…
It has a pagan origin, but so does Christmas and Easter.
Paying respects to those who have passed on?
Yeahhh, that’s definitely horrid and satanic.
*eye roll*
GRARJKFKSDJS.
This reminds me of Harry Potter..
Yesterday, for my ACLU club, I went around to classes talking about Harry Potter and hardcore Christians not wanting to read it because of the witchcraft and shit..
Ugh.
Honestly, I don’t mind anyone celebrating Halloween, as I find it my most favorite holiday of the year. I do have one disagreement. I do not like the whole “Harvest Festival” sponsored by churches. Just because a church slaps a new name on it, and offers to host it in the church does not change the fact that if you hold this event on October 31st. you are still celebrating Halloween and following through with the typical traditions of Halloween. We could call Decemember 25th Marywigglebum’s Starlight Festival, but it doesn’t change the meaning behind the holiday. Just a thought.
I think it’s fun and Halloween isn’t really celebrating the dead anymore. Just candy and fun.
The word “Halloween” is derived from Hallowed Eve which in Europe represented the celebration of one’s favorite saint. Over the years and continents, it became more macabre and has taken a turn towards ghosts, goblens and witches. The big problem that I have with Halloween is the danger that is posed to the children by some sick minds tainting the candy and treats, the psooible harm that young childre might encounter. I am for parties of celebrations at community centers, schools or churches.

So until they came around to your way of thinking they were lacking sense?? Isn’t that a little narrow-minded? That’s probably something that you accused them of being until they came around to your way of thinking.
I have no problem with celebrating Halloween, but I realize not everyone agrees with me and I would never criticize someone for having a different view of Halloween. If you don’t like people being critical of people for celebrating Halloween then maybe you should practice what you preach and not be critical of someone for choosing not to celebrate Halloween.
People need to realize that self-righteousness and narrow-mindedness works in more than one direction.
Yes but then again I’m not a christian. There’s nothing wrong with Halloween in my opinion.
No!!
I think it is REDICULOUS that Christians are so willing to give the devil his own day. If you are so against Halloween because you think the devil is so celebrated, then why don’t you take the freaking day back and prove that you can have fun trick or treating, and dressing up, completely without honoring the devil? When I was growing up, we were never allowed to dress as devils or witches or anything demonic, but we had FUN on Halloween.
DUH!!!! hallowen iz so much fun
Oh yeah, Halloween is the thing that ruined society all these years. Yeah. Right.
SURE WHY NOT CANDY IS AMAZING.
why not? technically Christmas is really not even when Jesus was born, but changed to incorporate another ‘pagan’ holiday.
yes. people are dumb. it’s not evil as long as you aren’t burning cats or crosses or bibles or things like that. evil things. the most evil I think I’ve ever done on Halloween, was scaring a few people and then getting silly stringed in the face for it. so yes..christians should celebrate halloween.
I’m a follower of Jesus Christ, and as for “should christians celebrate halloween,” I don’t think it’s something you can say for all christians, because not every single one believes the same thing. I don’t have a problem with dressing up as something fun, but honestly I haven’t gone door to door since I was about 5 and I don’t feel like i’ve missed out on anything. I usually get some of my girls together, and we have a party, or just plain hang out together, and honestly I have alot more fun that way than I think would be possible going door to door. That, and once you decide it’s ok to get dressed up, where do you draw the line?
I have a friend who had middle eastern kids who dressed up as osama bin ladden, and a “typical american teenager” and said they were “making the fun about 9-11, just like osama”
so really, where do you draw the line?
Halloween is fucking awesome.
Christmas is a pagan holiday too. Smoke on THAT sucker, Christians.
Posted 9/28/2006 at 12:04 AM by bittersunday
Well, I know why you call yourself “bitterSunday” now…lol…let me just say, that any Christian who actually knows their religion (which isn’t everyone, by the way) knows that the Bible doesn’t even refer to the day that Jesus was born. The closest it gets is referring to the season. That is because Jesus said that the end of something is better than its beginning…and He DIED for us…the main point being His death for the forgiveness of sins of all who accepted Him. So, don’t be so bitter, girl…some people are actually PRACTICING Christians…even the Bible says that some church-goers aren’t making it into heaven.
As far as Halloween goes…I was always educated on its satanic themes which is why I don’t celebrate it, but I have never condemned my sister for celebrating it since she has 3 children & they just like dressing up & getting candy. But the other mentions of its backgrounds could be just as legitimate…so as long as the children aren’t poisoned or possessed, and the holiday is not specifically & exclusively evil (which I am not certain, honestly, someone convince me one way or the other, please)then…
I do!
Wasn’t it a pagen holiday or something? I don’t know, but I don’t see a problem with it. The true meaning of the holiday shouldn’t be lost, but at the same time, I don’t think you should rob your kids of something almost every child does.

Huh??? What??? You mean to tell me December 25th isn’t really Jesus’ birthday??? Say it aint so!!!
Rolls eyes at another smartass who thinks they are saying something Christians have never heard.
They did not incorporate or adopt a pagan holiday. They borrrowed certain elements from the Pagan Festival of Winter Solstice. That is much different from incorporating an entire holiday.
I don’t know if there is anything funnier than a sactimonius non-Christian pulling that little nugget out thinking they are going to burst all our bubbles.
“Well, I know why you call yourself “bitterSunday” now”
Why does everyone and their goddamn mother assume that my username has anything to do with Christianity?? I could make a bunch of stupid assumptions about that chick’s username (AngleDawnLoupe), but I won’t cos only she knows why she chose it.
I chose my username because of a poem that I happened to write on a Sunday. The last line was “It is a bitter Sunday”. Nothing to do with church. Nothing to do with Jesus. Nothing to do with anything except that I happened to write it on that day and liked the way it sounded.
Idiots.
I’m Christian. I celebrated Halloween when I was young. I really see no problem with it. It’s not like we’re saying “We Worship Satan” or anything.
I don’t see anything wrong with it. True, it is pagan in origin, but now it is a day meant to commemorate our dead.

If you read the post you would see that she meant it as a joke, but it could also have something to do with the fact that you seem to be so hostile towards all things Christian, Christians worship on Sunday, surely you’re smart enough to see why some people might mistakenly think that their might be a connection between your screen name and your disdain for Christianity.
I used to celebrate Halloween until my bro in-law, who is a Wiccan priest, asked me why I did. See, he and his wife do not celebrate Christmas…and wondered why a Christian would celebrate Halloween. I thought about it….and it DID make sense. I did some research and couldn’t find anything Christian about Halloween, except the usual “Harvest Parties” at area churches. So, now I choose not to celebrate Halloween. I think it has opened doors with my brother in-law and with other people to give my testomony. I don’t judge other Christians who are choosing to celebrate it…it’s been a personal choice on my part.
p.s. There are other “deeper” reasons I don’t celebrated it as well and would be willing to discuss those if anyone’s interested…
Halloween can suck it

Oh but wait, there’s all these people on here who claim that Christmas is a pagan holiday. If that’s the case then Wiccans should definitely celebrate Christmas right?? Surely all the know-it-alls couldn’t be wrong, right??? I am being extremely sarcastic by the way.
Although, I would definitely disagree with your brother-in-law’s wiccan veiws, at least he seems to understand that just because there are certain elements of the Christmas tradition that are borrowed from the pagan Winter Soltice festival, that doesn’t make Christmas itself a pagan holiday.
NO!IF THEY DO THEY’LL BURN IN HELL!!!
haha no just playing…
i dont think halloween has anything to do with evil, so why not?
RevSteve224 :: I’ll use a trite quote.
“Assume” makes an ASS out of U and ME.
“Christians adopted the Pagan holiday of Winter Solstice for Christmas.”

Winter Solstice is December 22nd, o smart one. My initial comment was intended to be read to say they adopted the TIME of the year, not the traditions. I never said anything about traditions. Read my comment again.
Again, try not to assume. Kthnx!
I’m with sakura7546 all the way!!! I take my kids to the Sea Witch Festival, a local parade held yearly in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware with lots of vendors, etc. Then we go trick or treating, followed by bedtime with a local sitter so my husband & I can go to our friends’ yearly costume bash. It’s a great time for everyone, nobody gets all crazy about it, it’s just plain, old-fashioned fun!
Oh my goodness, but people are certainly getting hostile today, aren’t they???
Oh my God. Please Christians, grow up. Halloween has totally lost its true meaning ((unfortunately)) a long time ago, now it’s just an excuse to dress in ridiculous costumes ((or for girls, the only day where being a hooker//whore is acceptable)) and bum free candy off of people. And Christians were the damn ones to take away the true meaning of Halloween ((Or Samhain, as it is originally called)) because you were afraid of it’s “Pagan ways” Shut up and stop complaining about everything. It’s just one night of ridiculous, senseless fun, just enjoy the holiday for what it now is. And if you really don’t like the holiday, then don’t celebrate it….let everyone else have thier fun.
And techinally, Christmas is another Pagan holiday, although Yule ((the Pagan holiday)) is celebrated a few days before Christmas, however it was celebrated before the Christians even THOUGHT of Christmas because they stole the idea from the Pagans. Yule is exactly like Christmas, only a few things are changed. So while you’re at it, based on its origins as a Pagan tradition, why not celebrate Christmas either, you freaking holy terrors.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with celebrating Halloween. I don’t worship Satan in the least & Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. Free candy, hot or fun outfits considering your age & the kind of party you’re going to, scary movies, it rocks!
well i would have to say that i dont think a christian should celebrate halloween because it started out very pagan even if it is just fun now i still dont think we should celebrate it. God bless. Davis
uh, yeah. duh.
I’m Christian and I love, love love love love love love (10,000 bazillion more love’s) Halloween! It’s my favoritest time of year. My favoritest holidays are Halloween and Christmas! I don’t see how you can call a fun and innocent no thought as to how it started holiday that started on seemingly innocent grounds supported by Christians evil. Is fun evil?
Halloween is a day where you can be someone or something else for a night and not worry about what other people think and get free candy. I’m sure there are some strange people out there who use Halloween as a day for worshipping Satan, but I sure as hell am not one of those strange people, and I’m going to go as a bunny this year, lol. It’s all good.
-KrIsTiN-
And by the way, RevSteve224, if someone mentions the day “Sunday” to me, many other things will pop into my head before Christianity will. Actually, I would probably have to actually think about the word “Sunday” for a few minutes before I even thought of Christianity. Not that that had anything to do with anything, but I just thought I would mention that.
-KrIsTiN-
pfft who gives?! Celebrate it! It’s so much fun scaring people lol
people need to learn history before they argue about this.
yeahh
yes, dammit. christians need to calm down.
some of them that is.
Halloween is tied in with death, horror, Witchcraft, Satan, candy, fun, fantasy…all that good stuff. Doesn’t the Bible say all that stuff is wrong? I think so…so you Christians don’t be hippocrits now.
And it goes back to the Harry Potter thing…they think it promotes Witchcraft…well oh my, what does Halloween promote then?
Of course. It’s a fun little tradition not a time to worship the devil or some crap like that.
YES!
I’m Christian and I say ‘There’s nothing wrong with Halloween.’ I use to go out and trick-or-treat. Now there’s a holiday called “Day of the Dead” or “Día de los muertos”. It’s all about celebrating your ancestors lives and your love for them. I don’t celebrate that holiday only because I never grew up with it. It originates from Mexico.
Halloween is made for fun and od-ing on candy! It’s a day for little kids to go crazy in their cute and scary costumes!
