BMI Part 2
Apparently I am overweight. I had a conversation via messages with PacifismPlease. I am 6’4″ and I weigh 245 pounds. She pointed out that I was overweight and close to obese on the BMI chart. So I checked it on the BMI calculator.
My BMI is 29.8. I am .2 from being obese.

Its ok, BMI isn’t always that accurate. Body builders and athletes who have almost no body fat are technically overweight and obese sometimes.

Okay, yes, I’ve commented this entry a thousand times, but I thought of *one* more thing to say. BMI is one of the best systems, but not completely accurate. It can’t determine muscle weight from fat.

However, like someone above said, you can’t really take it that seriously since muscle weighs more than fat, so someone who looks the same as someone else could weigh much more even though they’re more fit, and someone fit could weigh the same with their muscle as someone who looks much bigger due to them being all fat.

Oh. When I incresed my height from 5 feet 11.875 inches to 6 feet, I dropped from 25.1 to 24.4. I’d rather have the higher BMI than the extra .125 inches, to be honest.

BMI is inaccurate if you have higher than average muscle mass. While it may say some people (especially men as they tend to be more naturally muscular) are obese, they are actually extremely muscular. It’s more of a guideline… a better indicator of health in my opinion is body fat percentage or waist-to-hip ratio

(Yet I have a 25-inch waist… I think waist size is a much better indicator. Why don’t you ask people about their measurements instead?)

Real BMI testers also have a strength test so that it can account in your muscle mass.

Back in the spring I was 125 and that height.. A lot thinner for me.. I liked that a lot better, but I’ve put on some weight with sitting around doing so much homework and not exercising as much.

But sometimes the BMI is inaccurate because it doesn’t account for muscle mass, fitness level, bone structure, gender, and ethnicity (SOURCE: Wikipedia.org). I learned in my Nutrition class that the waist-to-hip ratio is a better indicator than the BMI. Also the fat-fold measurement, using the caliper.

I recently gained 25 pounds, and grew a few inches.. my weight is accurate at 215 but my height is most likely not…

It is not at all accurate because it doesn’t take into account the ratio of body fat to lean muscle mass in your body.
It is based on some insurance company’s idea that people of a certain hight live longer when they weigh within a certain range.

BMIs are a load of crap. They dopn’t take into account how much muscle you have, what your bone structure is like, etc. Just height and weight. But I could have 20 extra lbs of muscle vs someone my same height, and it will claim that I’m overweight.
I think they’re a pretty poor estimator of how “healthy” your weight is.

i can’t do my current BMI since i don’t have a scale and have NO CLUE what i weigh.
however, since muscle weights 33% more than fat, the BMI is flawed, according to my nutritionist. if you go simply by BMI, you could have a low BMI, but have a very high percentage of body fat (since fat is lighter than muscle) > so you could actually be obese with a low BMI. likewise, a high BMI might simply indicate a higher weight, which could be due to more muscle…

I wrote an article that the bmi is wrong. it is no longer a useful indicator of heart disease or anything else. the waist to hip ratio is considered more accurate.

this is incredibly inaccurate. BMI varies greatly from each person. you may have more muscle mass, or less muscle mass than average. Besides, muscle weighs a lot more than fat, so the results may be wayyyyyyyyyyyyy skewed.
