  • The Pope Part 3

The Pope is visiting Turkey for the next four days.

He has come under fire from Islamic groups for comments he made in which people perceived he was linking Islam and violence.

He has been burned in effigy.  25,000 Turks showed up to an anti-Vatican protest in Istanbul hoping for him to not come to Turkey.

    Dear normally very peaceable Muslims,

    Please don’t kill the Pope.

    Your friend,

    Dan

If you were the Pope, would you visit Turkey?

  • haha no i would like to stay alive lol

  • second…ish If I were Pope I would resign and pursue something with more substance.

  • No….

That is one ugly son of a bitch.

  • NOPE!!!

  • yea, you cant be scared of em, or they will use that and push you farther…… anyways i bet he’s trying to remend relations…..

  • Well, everyone needs to hear the message of peace, and Turkey especially…. but oh, how I wish JPII was still alive.

  • God would protect me, right?
    Riiiiiight?

  • I WOULDN’T WANT TOOOO DIE!!!

  • you know you have no life when you wait around for dan to post again……… oh well………… maybe i should go do something……

  • If God told me to go, I’d go.

  • I doubt it.

  • oh, and there are Catholics in Turkey, too.  Why deny them a visit of the Holy Father?

  • lol .. prolly not.

  • I’d do a cost/benefit analysis.

  • It would be the right thing to do, but I’d probably be too scared of getting killed.

  • Hey, If that’s what he needs to get exhilerated, then by all means.

I don’t think there are too many things the pope can do to get a “high”.

Shoplifting?  Got to be kidding.  Dancing?

By putting himself in the face of danger. . .at the very least he becomes a martyr.

He’s gonna feel good about himself if he leaves in one piece.

  • No way, their God could kick mines ass… Oh wait, they’re the same person

  • little sarcastic are we?

yes I would go…God is greater than Muslims…although I’m not Catholic so I don’t know how or if that would change my views…

  • Yes, because if I were the pope, I’d be very holy and therefore brave and unafraid for my own life. I’d realize that my life is dedicated to leading Catholics everywhere without fear. Which I’m sure he realizes and that is why he is going to Turkey. Besides, he’s probably pretty well protected.

  • nah
    i would visit gravy though
    mmm mmm

  • lol  Normally peaceful Muslims huh?  Good one.

  • Doesn’t the pope travel in a vehicle with bullet-proof glass?

  • Well I’ve been to turkey and I absolutely love it there. But if I was Pope asshole? No way. I’dhide under my big hat in the vatacan.

  • Sorry but, the Pope looks so evil in that picture it makes me laugh too hard to think about the question.

  • Yes, I would. They can either show me my why statement was wrong or accept that they over-reacted and let’s make nice.

  • If I were the pope, they’d keep me locked up in the Vatican.  If their were Catholics there that wanted me to visit, then I suppose I would consider a visit.

  • yes, yes i would

  • Guess I never answered the question.

If I were the pope. . .I would feel so sorry for myself I’d probably want to die.  So I’d definitely want to visit Turkey, and Afghanistan, and every other place there is!

  • probably. everyone will die sometime.

  • You know they’re going to kill him.

  • Frankly, no one thus far has actually even paid much attention to the Pope during his travels. All the rioting and effigy-burning will not amount to any serious violence.

The pope said some ridiculous things. Now he has a mess to clean up.

  • I would if it meant that it would help.

  • During the actual travels themselves, I mean.

  • Well of course! With god on my side, I can do anything mutherfuckers!

    no.

    -Jacob

  • Fuck those Turks

  • I would think twice about it. But if I reallly needed to i would

  • I’m Catholic, think the Pope looks like the AntiChrist but I don’t want him dead either….don’t agree with what he’s been saying but he doesn’t deserve to die…’til the next

  • That’s awesome, they want the world to see them as peaceful by burning effigy’s of people that say otherwise?

  • Not entirely sure. Funny, though, my Italian prof was talking about this in class today. (He claims we don’t know enough about what’s going on in the world, lol.) He said that in Italy, they call the Pope (this particular one) the “panzer,” heh.

  • Inaudibleyelling- you’re going to burn for that one- and I ain’t talking about the sun. Peaceable Muslims, Dan. Hardly. How about Christian-Haters? And yes, he should visit this Holy Land- where the writings of the New Testament began, and where St. Paul and St. Luke left their marks on Christianity.

  • Sure. Wherever I was needed.

  • Sure, I like to go on vacation sometimes too.

  • If I was the pope, Turkey wouldn’t be a problem.

  • I like what living_embers said.  I agree.

  • yeah.

but i don’t like the new pope.

john paul ii was the best.

  • I dunno. I’m not the friggin Pope for a reason. =P

  • Yes.  I wonder what Muslims would think of a western country burning Muhommed in effigy?  It is their freedom of speech to do so, but is it our freedom of speech to do that?  I’m not saying it should be done, but do we have the freedom to do so?  Are we so afraid to do even that?

  • the pope is one of the most heavily garuded people on the planit. I’d feel fine

  • yes, the pope is doing his work.

  • Well he seems to just be trying to make peace

I think it’s so strange how the fact the Pope is visiting an islamic country is making the cover of last week’s Time, all over CNN… hmm

  • Yes and I would eat turkey in Turkey!!

  • if i was an elf, maybe.

  • I dunno, man.  This pope looks friggin evil.

  • good evening dan

  • its ok, us normally peaceful muslims have better things to do then to kill the pope. i hope you do know that another reason why Turkish people are upset is because that the pope (before he even was pope) was strongly against Turkey being part of the EU because of its religion and culture. so yes the people would be pretty pissed off.

  • I am sure the Pope has put himself in God’s hands.  If I were Catholic and if I were a man and I found myself as the Pope, Yes I would go.

  • =)

  • Probably not…

  • Not until it’s calmed down a bit. . . . .  talk about a death wish.

I miss our old pope, good ol’ John Paul!

  • Dear Pope,

Please quit saying stupid shit in an attempt to start some sort of holy war.

    Your friend and former follower,

    -Nick

  • Me, the pope?  Hahahahahahahahahhahahaha.

Sure, why not.  Do I get frequent flyer miles?

  • If I was the pope I would name myself a cool name like “Paco” instead of “Pope John the whatever” and get rid of the fancy garbs and wear shorts and a wife beater. I’d cruise around my bullet proof Pacomobile (not Popemobile) and maybe put some hydraulics and a sound system in it. And I’d come out and blow kisses and blessings upon all who were cool enough to come watch. Damn…it would be good to be Pope…or Paco for that matter!

  • with god on his side, even if they did gun him down, he would go straight to heaven. being the pope and all. he is basically invincible.

  • yeah, but thankfully i’m not the pope.  he has to keep up relations with other religions/countries

  • Oh, most definitely. In fact, I would make it a priority.

  • I sure hope I don’t ever end up looking or being anything like that Pope. ^^;; (miss you JPII… *snif* )

That being said, if I’d already announced I was going to Turkey, you better bet I’d still go to Turkey. No horde of fanatics is going to spook me! (I’d bring a lot of security though and pack some heat.)

  • Sure, I mean, if that’s where God called me anyhow

  • Hell yeah, I mean it’s almost a sure fire way to guarantee joining the great matyrs of the faith, and since, if I am the pope I must also be Cahtolic, I might even get canonised and become a saint!

    /cynicism

    Shalom!

  • Nope.

Why if he isn’t Jewish is he wearing a yarmuckle? (sp)

  • I think he should go, building interfaith relations is very important, despite the fact that some people face them rather hesitantly. All that rioting will come to nothing, he will be just fine. Even though I am not this Pope’s biggest fan, I wouldn’t want to kill him. Ever.

    ~a very peaceable Muslim~

  • Wow burning someone in effigy really sends  PEACFUL message!

  • wasn’t it a Turk who Shot John Paul? I would go. The Turks want in the EU and they are still freaking out about the Pope? Grow up Turkey.

  • I for one and against Turkey joining the EU, they have one city that they captured on the European continent and took all the famous architecture of that city and stole it. It’s getting in on a technicality. I vote no.

  • i probably would. im sure he has great security. plus, doesnt he have the popemobile? and that thing has like bullet proof glass

thats a pretty sweet suit he has

  • I think it it a “head on” approach and show great courage.  I know he wants to do the right thing and will do everything in his power to make peace over this issue.

  • Yes. I think that no advances will be made but the vist might prevent further worsening of relations. If they want to be mad they will find a reason.

  • that’s like asking a ham sandwich if it would go to a homeless shelter.

  •  > Making an effort, ok, but is the transport in question for the trip I.E.D.-proof, car-bomb proof, suicide bomber proof? Its silly, I think has been adequately proven in the past, to rely on God to protect any mortal from the actions of other mortals…. Faith is one thing, but….

    Peace, while it lasts

  • if i were pope, everyone would be coming to see ME since no one would believe that a female was elected pope…

however, to suspend disbelief and answer the question…

yes, i would visit turkey since it is the only secular muslim nation, and i think it’s important to validate and support any regime in the middle east that can remain secular with a muslim majority. they are not under the shar’ia law, which is a wonderful thing.

besides, what is my life compared to the goal of reconciliation in the world (which is the work of the true Christian)?

  • Idiot.

The only place the Pope is holy is his mind. This tour is a very stupid move.

Dear Muslims, I totally feel ya on this. Please don’t prove the righteous, criminlly ignorant and meddlesome right in their minds by showing Mr Pope that holy only goes as far as a pile of rubble for an American smart bomb.

  • I am so proud of him!   Check this link
    http://www.crisismagazine.com/november2006/reilly.html
Amazing philosophical reasons to TALK – Christian (Catholic or whatever) and Moslem.  What are the real underlying issues?  They are 500 years YOUNGER than Christianity;  if there is a developmental schema, think what Christianity was doing 500 year ago? Inquisition, anyone?  They need to work this out internally, but they really need to get going.  Responsible dialogue could help some start!  check the link out.  BTW-Muslim is like the N-word.  Moslem or Isalmic is much better.  From a kids book I learned this.  A little child will lead us….maybe our OWN inner child!

  • I don’t really know why he’s visiting Turkey.
But I’m sure he has very good reasons for it.
So, yes, if I had a very good reason and wanted to teach them something.
    But otherwise no.

  • I’d go, but more to make a point then anything. Besides, he’s got the Pope-mobile, right? He’ll be safe ;) …From bullets anyway.

  • no, Turkey would be the last place I would go!

  • “Dear normally very peaceable Muslims,”  hahahahahahahahahahaha.

if i was the pope, , , id nuke turkey, , , or if i didnt have a nuke or two, , , id order my followers to invade turkey.

yes i would go to turkey, , , to claim it for my church.

  • a peaceful muslim?
    no there’s an oxymoron

  • Turkey is beautiful, of course!
And if I was the Pope, I would go to pretend I don’t think people who are different from me are dumb and going to hell so that everyone would like me again.
    Heh.

  • if you look carefully at the past 10 years of the Catholic church and Islams spread across Europe, you’ll see that the Pope signed off on Islam as having the same “god” He even gave thanks to Fatima for his saftey. The Catholic church has been in talks about aligning itself with the Muslims. I think he’ll be just fine in Turkey. However Turkey dir try to align itself with the EU several years ago, and after spreading much money and mindset on becomeing “western” the EU declined their application to become part of Europe, so their chocie was Islam.
he’ll be safe until the Muslims takeover the Catholics

  • I don’t know about you, but I do link Islam and violence. The religion is all about hating Jews and Christians and forcing Muslim beliefs on everyone w/the goal of turning every country in the world to Islam through whatever means possible, even if it’s violence. I surrendering country has 3 choices: convert, be killed, or live under tyranny. I would therefore not say “normally very peacable Muslims.”

  • There is a great book out called “A woman rides the beast”, you should check it out, it concerns the Catholic church, not the Christians who are Catholics, the the “Catholic Church” as traditional thing.

  • Uhh…..probably wouldn’t be the smartest thing to do, lol.

                                                                         -KrIsTiN-

  • NO WAY!!! btw i love ur sarcasm towards the end lol.

  • No, but I would never be the pope, so that doesn’t matter. lol

  • If I were most concerned for my own safety, no.  If I were most concerned about trying to reconcile the peoples of the world, yes.  However, the second motivation is probably a tad over-optimistic.  Neverthless, we are to try to be “instruments of peace.”

So, he made comments ”in which people perceived he was linking Islam and violence.”  I hate to say it, but, the attacks on 9/11 weren’t done by Episcopalians.  And I don’t think the terrorist cells are sponsored by Presbyterians.  Christians have performed their share of violence, certainly (think: the Crusades, the subjugation of Native American peoples in the name of the Church, the Inquisition, the Witch Trials, etc…).  So have Hindus.  So have Nationalists (nationalism is a type of religion, I suppose).  So has just about every other belief system in history.  “Islam” does not mean “peace.”  And I feel sorry for the Pope.  Atheists, Muslims, and other religious/non-religious groups can blast every aspect of Christianity, and that’s ok (apparently).  But a Christian dares to suggest another religion (atheism included) could be wrong or misguided somehow, and he has to apologize??  Something’s wrong here.
