Roe v. Wade
Today marks the 34th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. It is the decision where the Supreme Court ruled that a woman has a constitutional right to have an abortion.
Here are ultrasound pictures from the new machine that shows 3D and 4D photos of a woman’s womb. (Don’t ask me why they are called 4D).
Do you consider these pictures a baby or a fetus?

How could someone look at that picture and see eyes and a nose and a mouth and say it’s perfectly acceptably to murder him or her? No, they couldn’t survive on their own outside the womb, but have you ever heard of an infant surviving without a caregiver either? No.

I am pro-choice. And as I have done many times before I start out with that statement followed by….I believe women should have the right to chose. This doesn’t mean I will have an abortion.
For all those who are anti-abortion…give me another option besides adoption. Something. All I ever hear is how it is wrong and women shouldn’t be allowed to.
Take away abortion and you triple the amounts of D/C’s and “coathanger” methods. Give a better option and I will stand side by side with you.

Looking like a “baby” doesn’t make it a “baby.” The question posed by Dan is more fundamental than that of opinions or issues, it is fo definitions. (try http://www.dictionary.com for clarification). Now, anyone can go around redefining words for their own ends (poetic license or out of stupidity) but that itself doesn’t effect the established, proper definition of terms.
A fetus is technically before a baby is outside the womb… but I swear at 1 month (isn’t that the latest you can go before you aren’t allowed to abort the fetus? or maybe i’m making that up…) you wouldn’t see all those features.

4D usually means that it’s 3D, plus includes time and motion, usually repeating a short time interval. A 4D photo is sort of an oxymoron.
Looks like a baby to me, but it’s hard to quantify when an embryo becomes a fetus, and when a fetus becomes a baby. Do we base it on if it has eyes? Or hands? Or feet? Or has a beating heart (which begins to form and beats at 14 days)? When does an embryo become a human, with fully-protected rights as such, and when is it just a piece of the mother’s body that can be thrown out as she pleases? Is it just based on the emotional triggers that arise when we look on the ultrasound images? Not everyone gets the same emotional triggers from the same stimuli.

I think that it’s a fetus. It is technically a parasite, as it’s attatched to the mother and couldn’t carry on existance without her.

Funny no one including doctors ever call it that, unless they are killing it. If that is all it really is why the games with words?
People will have abortions even if they’re outlawed. Which means backalley aborting, which means a higher probability of death for both the fetus AND the mother.
I’m pro-choice, but I think that there should be restrictions. I don’t think that it should be used as a form of birth control for a woman perfectly capable of having a child that just doesn’t want one. A 13-year-old or a rape victim would be MUCH more understandable.
Fetuses really gross me out. I think they are hidden for a reason. Only my child will look reasonably appealing to me, and that’s only because I’ll be his parent.

And should you murder an innocent baby just because it’s father was wicked and raped a girl? What if your mother told you as an adult that she had been raped and you were just not worth it and she needed to kill you today? Yeah . . .
Depends (you gotta love the American thought process):
Fetus = if the mom wants to kill it, even up to the day before “birth”
Baby = if mom/abortion doctor doesn’t kill it and the “fetus” passes through the birth canal OR if the mother is injured or killed prior to “birth”, then we can charge someone with injury/manslaughter/murder of TWO people.

Holy crap! How am I still alive?! I have rejected God so many times over, and have a happier life than most people I know! What is up with that?!
It’s a fetus and a baby. A fetus is just a baby that hasn’t been born yet.
Oh and if anyone can show me something in the constitution that even aludes to the right to have an abortion, then I will recant my long help position that the supreme court had absolutely no right to rule on Roe v. Wade.
Just another sign that the judiciary has long abandoned their original purpose and restrictions.

There was a doctor who was performing an abortion – destroying a “fetus” – and during the abortion of this so called blob of tissue, the blob of tissue reached out of the mother’s womb and grabbed the doctor’s finger. It’s a true story – I’ve even seen pictures of it. The doctor never performed another abortion in his life.
A baby’s – or whatever you want to call it – heart starts beating when it’s been in the womb for 4 weeks. No matter what you say, any abortion after 4 weeks stops a beating heart. And abortions before 4 weeks still kill a human being.

Does anyone else see just how perverted our trend of thinking is these days? So many of us are answering along the lines of “It’s a fetus which can be removed if it’s an inconvenience to the mother”.
Has anyone ever noticed that Gynecologists and pediatricians call them babies, and abortionists and “pro-choice” advocates call them fetuses? Apparently when it’s inconvienient to us it becomes a fetus. I guess it’s easier to kill one of those than it is to kill a baby.

A fetus is a developing human (or mammal), post-embryonic and pre-birth.
This is a fetus, and only a fetus. People can “consider” it to be whatever they want.
That doesn’t change the fact that it isn’t a baby.

We try so hard as a society to create emotional distance when trying to justify certain behaviors. Props to SykoJonnyboy for pointing that out.
There was an incident in China where an American doctor was to perform an abortion on a woman late in her third trimester. The operation didn’t go well and the baby was born instead, perfectly healthy. The doctor’s higher-ups wanted the doctor to just kill the baby. In the end, the doctor refused and left the country. Why do we work so hard to distinguish whether or not a living being is inside or outside the womb?
And why can’t a father legally decide to keep *his* child? There is no legal protection for a father who would be ready and willing to accept the responsibility.

It depends on whether you want to get technical. From looking I say baby all the way. Show me something that looks like a chicken nugget with an eye and I’d say fetus. Abortion is a tough topic. Our receptionist is carry a fetus/baby that may have a hole in its heart and may have Down’s syndrome. Docs tell her to abort, but she doesn’t like that idea. Very tough choice to make. I’m just glad the government isn’t in the mix telling her what she can or can’t do.

a baby isnt just another organ in the human body.
With the obvious exception of rape, if a couple didn’t want a baby, then why did they have sex? So many aspects of society are working to create sex without consequences. But every action has consequences; we wish to be a society of quick fixes where no one is held accountable. The joy of sex inherently carries consequences, and no matter what we do, there is no form of birth control or STD prevention that can protect our hearts if we aren’t careful about how we use our bodies with each other.
In our country, over 40 million lives have been killed due to Roe vs. Wade. Call the image above whatever you like, but the murder of 40 million innocent lives is called a holocaust.

Well, I don’t really like to draw completely arbitrary lines like “when something is in one place it’s considered a human life but when it’s somewhere else it’s considered a mass of cells”, so I’m going to have to say it’s a baby. I’ve wondered about the notion that the fetus is a piece of the woman’s body for her to have the choice whether or not she wanted to do something with it. Such language sounds to me that the fetus is put on par with long fingernails or hair that can be trimmed or clipped and cast off at the whim of the woman who possesses the given elements. If this is the case, why do people feel uncomfortable about talking about their having an abortion? We can talk about hair cuts and manicures, what is the difference according to this paradigm of thinking? Can we just say that such uneasiness is a societal malfunction that flows from a biggotted few who misunderstand this basic thinking about a fetus?

Once the baby is born (maybe as a crack baby), he will be poor, neglected, and abused. He’ll end up joining a gang so he feels like he actually belongs somewhere, and he’ll kill others just for the heck of it. The kid will probably end up dead because of a gang fight. But hey, at least the woman didn’t kill her innocent baby and he had a chance to live a short life!!
Of course, that’s not always the case, but it’s 1 unpleasant possibility.

From conception to 8 weeks it is an embryo. From 8 weeks until birth it is a fetus. The child I am carrying is a fetus and will be until it is born. I, for one am glad, we have Roe vs Wade.
I love when people use words like how a mother decides “on a whim” that giving birth to said child is “inconvenient.” It shows a complete lack of understanding for the reasons and siutations why abortion is necessary to begin with.
Pictures are great at bringing out primal, reactionary emotions in people, allowing them to completely ignore reality and the rationality behind the need for abortion at times. Let’s all just ignore the fact that pregnant teens will get thrown out on the street if their parents find out she got pregnant, or how we continue to avoid teaching teens about things like birth control that would reduce the need for abortion, or the mother who died due to complications during childbirth. No, let’s all look at the cute little baby instead.

It was always called a baby. People didn’t start using the term “fetus” until they felt a need to justify murder.

Yes, God knew us before we were conceived, but He did not predestine us to failure or salvation. Each person must make his or her own decision to trust in the Lord. I will always consider it a fetus until it gets to the last trimester. That’s just personal opinion from someone who had to have an abortion because of being raped. It destroyed me, and still eats me up inside. However, I will support freedom of choice to an extent. If it is preformed in a certain amount of time, I think it is acceptable. That’s just how I feel.

I think it’s a baby even though it can’t hold a camera at a weird angle and take a picture of itself and then tell other people over the internet that it’s okay to murder. It’s still a person. If you say a fetus isn’t a baby and that it’s just a mass of cells… then what is it going to become? A wallet? A Chinchilla? You know it’s going to become a human being. What if you were aborted? But the mere potential for human life can’t be the only criterion for the morality of abortion. Individual sperms and eggs, any random human cell, has the potential to be grown into a full human being. Certainly, it ain’t immoral to not continuously have unprotected sex or to shave.

Rhetorical question: Is it morally justified to pull the plug on a brain dead patient? The patient has all the biological makeup of a human being: Skin, bones, DNA. The clear difference is the absolute lack of any conscience brain activity.
Just as it is morally acceptable to pull the plug on a brain dead patient, it is morally acceptable to pull the plug on a brainless, cluster of cells. Yes, assuming everything goes well– with the zygote’s development, with the mother– this group of cells may develop into a healthy baby. The fact of the matter is what is and not what optimistically may be. My personal stance is that prior to some point in fetus brain develompent, abortion ought to be allowed.

A sperm cell by itself is not a new living being nor is an ovum. When they come together and the ovum is fertilized, you have a new creature with its own DNA and such. I’m not really sure “potential” is relevant in this discussion.
Claiming a woman’s “right to choose” is the most important thing is an ignorant argument if one considers the fetus a living being. Since most of the people you’re arguing with do, crying about the woman’s right to choose holds no weight. Why? Because it’s on par with saying a woman has the right to choose whether she wants to beat her 4 yr old into a bloody pulp or not (of course, if it’s convenient for her).
A miscarriage is not equivalent with murder. It is equivalent with a death, though.
I seriously doubt anyone is going to change their mind after reading through these comments. If anything, they’ll just be more entrenched. One thing that annoys me from either side, though, are bad arguments and ignoring reality.

You say it as though it’s the easiest thing in the world. Of course it isn’t.
Sure people could lose weight if they just exercised and ate the right things. Yet we still have unhealthy/overweight people. Is it because they want to be overweight and unhealthy? For the most part, no. It’s because they can’t bring themselves to diet.

It’s called 4D scanning because in addition to height, width, and depth, it shows the pictures in real time. Pretty cool actually. It sort of allows the parents to “see” their baby’s behavior before it’s even born. It is supposed to promote bonding and whatnot. Just so you know! (Because I am one of those geeks that finds this interesting.

I guess so. But we believe in the value of potential energy. Even if you can argue for “hardly alive” the potential life is still a big deal. Doesn’t that show in other areas of science? I don’t know. Something makes it a big deal.
There was assumption that pulling the plug on a brain dead person is okay. I find that amusing because that opens a whole other argument, and I really don’t think it will be left as a simple matter.
