Bed Sheets Part 2
The reason I asked how often you washed your sheets in the last post was because I came across this link: Link
The picture to the right is a picture of a demodex folliculorum. It is a tiny mite. It is said to be .4 mm long. It lives in your pores and hair follicles. It is most often found in the roots of your eyelashes. People with oily skin are more likely to have them. People that use a lot of cosmetics and don’t wash very well can have a ton of them.
They can cause infections but are considered harmless.
I can’t help but to wonder about how many little critters are actually on our pillows.
Are you going to go wash your eyelashes now?
Comments (153)
Negative.
Nah. I’ve made it this far.
They say if you put shampoo on your eyelashes (i’ve also heard conditioner) that it kills them. I tried it once years ago- very painful experience.
No.
meh.
Nah, having studied up on the human form, there’s a hell of a lot worse in and around us than those fuckers.
Trust me. I’m a saint. THE HALO SPEAKS TRUTH.
You’re all going to die!
It’s a prophesy!
no
What the hell kind of idiot is going to do that?
I wash my sheets and pillows twice a week…. I change them twice a week I should say…. I vaccuum the pillows I cannot throw in the washer….and spray with santitizer….Showering twice a day also… I KNOW there are bugs on us, and I KNOW they’re there to help get rid of the dead skin and other things that NEED to be taken care of…but it’s still very ikcy
‘Til The Next
No, but I just pinched the roots of my eyelashes hoping it would kill them, heh.
Gross little things.
omg.. that’s why we’re not supposed to rub our eyes/?!?!!?!?!??!?!?!!?
not really,I can accept that a virtually uncountable amount of little creatures live on me
Ewww!
There’s a lot worse – inside meh!
No. I am going to go vomit now. Thanks!
I think I would have been better off not knowing that.
Now I’m probably going to develop an OCD or something.
nahh…i welcome them…
Eyelash, sweet, eyelash!
me eyelash es su eyelash!
ne othr ways to welcome them?
//Gr4ci3//<3
ok, now i think i’ll go wash my sheets and start being pretty religious about it. i’ll probably go wash my eyelashes too. that picture grosses me out.
Nope
no but they do look just wonderful *sarcastic*
I have heard that bedbugs are on the rise…………..::Shivering::
I’ve had an eyelash fall out every now and then. I wonder if its just coincidence or if its caused by these creepy critters. Now I have an itch on my forehead…thanks a lot, Dan. =P
No. Actually, the thought of those all over my pillow are worse. Bed sheets are getting washed today!
There’s lots of little bugs living on us. And have been for eternity. Why start worrying now?
Nope. My cosmetics are here to stay, the critters can enjoy.
I think its healthier to not be squeaky clean. My hair and skin aren’t oily but if i wash them too much my skin flakes and my hair becomes coarse. I wash my hair twice a week max and shower only 3 times a week. I don’t smell and I don’t have oily hair or skin.
And becuase I’m not clean I’m less seseptible to flu and other sickness beucase I’m exposed to germs all the time. The last time I was sick was probably about a year ago.
Yuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck
If they are on me they must be cute
YES!
Yes.
I fell asleep with my eyeliner on on Friday night and still haven’t really taken the time to scrub it all off. [It has a tendency to stay on after I wash my face.]
RYC: Yes, I drew them on him, with liquid eyeliner and a lot of patience.
And I’ve got some friends in my digestive tract. And I’ve got some more friends in my hair follicles and my stomach. So far, we’ve gotten along very well.
heck no! i think those little buggers are cute!
I actually really really want to, but already as i’m typing this response, the will and determination died.
Oh wow… yuck. That’s amazing that one of your commenters change their sheets 2 times a week.
They may not be too disturbing, but oh well.
I needed to do that anyway.
no, things like that don’t really bother me. i have come to accept them.
Nope. Maybe I should wax them.
Nah, I rarely wear make-up & I don`t have oily skin.
ya know, if its brought to my attention, its kinda gross, but….. they’re just one of all the symbiotic relations we humans have with tiny critters…. so…. live and let live. at least in this case.
nope…
If fate decided to put little critters on my eyebrow, pillow, whatever, why should we change that fate? We’ve made it this far, anyways.
If only you knew of all the things crawling about on your body…
I heard that there’s something like that in your eyebrows too. I have oily skin but I never wear makeup. Hmm. Kinda gross. Oh well.
Just a natural cycle going on here, people.
Yeah, I read about those back when I was in high school. It freaked me out a little then…as it does now, but I’m not going to spaz out and go wash my eyelashes. I’ll choose to ignore the idea.
What have those cute little bugs ever done to me? Why should commit bugicide and trying to elimate them?
Yep, maybe
Awwwww! Cute lil bugger.
YES! and i’m definetely not sleeping w/ you anymore!
just kidding..
I never use a pillow…
Considering I have made it several decades without so much as a problem I think Ill keep to my routine…but damn you anyway.
ugh…. I know there are tons of little gross things all over us… but seeing a picture of it just makes me want to vomit. Luckily I just washed my face VERY thoroughly before reading this, so I won’t go do it again.
nope.
No
nah, im too lazy. I haven’t gotten an infection or anything…yet. It’s not broken so i’m not going to try to fix it.
Nahhhhhhhh…I share a room with a chicken-how OCD can I possibly be??
I’m so going to wash my makeup off every night.
Actually, that’s a lie. I’m too lazy.
No, are you going to change your underwear now?
i just thought about how hard it’s going to wear mascara now..ICK.
haha. i definetly just washed my eyelashes really really well.
it scared me so bad.
Are you kidding? Those guys are some of my best friends!
I studied them in biology a couple years ago. They didn’t scare me then and don’t scare me now.
A plus to having oily skin? FINALLY! Sure, it’s just making the astronomically long shot of getting an infection from one of these helpful critters* even more long, but it’s something.
*I’d rather have them than have several layers of dead skin coating my face.
There are tons of microscopic creatures like those that surround us, whether we’re hygenic or not.
But I’m definitely never going to put mascarra on the same way again.
Isn’t the thought of bugs living on us and our eyelashes a nice thought? Good thing I’m a bug-a-phobic!!!
-scrub scrub…- jk.
I never wear make-up, so I’m probably all right.
This is one of those things that you can either freak out about, or just accept that bugs and germs are all over, and you can’t really do anything about it.
Plus… I think they’re pretty!
So?
You’ve got E. Coli living in your intestine!
I can deal with a harmless mite on my eyelashes.
Of course not! I am so pleased that there is an ecosystem in my eyelashes which is a part of the ecosystem in my pillow. Someone has to eat all my exudea!
I love the little mites. If I were smaller, we could cuddle up at night and tell scary stories and giggle with a flashlight.
They wouldn’t harm me. Seeing as how I wipe eye boogers away from my eyes every morning. I’m kinda like there janitor!
According to a tempur-pedic commercial, the average metal spring mattress will DOUBLE IN WEIGHT DUE TO DUSTMITES INHABITING THEM! FWAHAHAHAHAHA!
It’s pretty gross, but I’m more worried about little wormy things sticking out of my eyes and wiggling around. Someone will be like, “Holy **** there’s something wiggling around your eye!” And I’ll be like, “No there isn’t.” even though they will be ubscuring my vision.
The worm thing is more shudderable.
*obscuring
Gross! I wash twice a day!
are you?
There are all sorts of micro0bes and funky little beings all over all of our bodies and things. This one, you just said, is harmless. If I wash my eyelashes, I’ll just get new ones in, ewhat, a few hours’ time maybe? That’s if I even get rid of them to begin eith?
I’ll just make peace with my little critters.
I douche my eyes every night.
uggh
ew this grosses me out. i am AWARE of all the gross things that live around & in us…but i hate actually acknowledging it because i’m a clean freak & my roommate is geramphobe & her habits have rubbed off on me. …
Gross.
They eat dead skin. Several other little critters eat the oil skin makes. These guys are helping us. Besides, even washing your eyelashes and sheets isn’t going to get rid of them entirely.
For a really great image, imagine all those lovely bacteria in your intestine, eating your food. Yum.
Gross me out! Aaaalllllgggghhhhhh!!!!
I’m going to climb inside my dishwashwer and wash myself, then I’m going into my washing machine and dryer just to make sure. Then perhaps a vat of bleach!
I’m more scared of being without mascara than I am those critters.
And I will add this: I just read the link and even when I don’t change the sheets, I DO change the pillowcases!
UMM…nope. I can’t see them, so I’m good for now.
Nope, I don’t really care. There are most likely more critters in my bed sheet, or pillow case then my eyelashes so why care?
I wash my face twice a day
that’s good enough right?
they’re probably chilling in my mascara tube as we speak
That is really gross, but no, I’m not going to wash my eyelashes at the moment.
Your skin at any given time is crawing with thousands of microscopic bug like organisms. Dust mites, etc. get onto your beding in vast numbers too. For example 10% of the weight of a two year old pillow can be composed of dead mites and their droppings. No, I’m not going to go wash my eyelashes. I’m not obsessive-compulsive.
nope. haven’t hurt me so far so, oh well.
I think the critters might be there for a reason so I’ll leave em be
Hm, I have oily skin but I don’t wear make-up (minus the eyeliner).
I wash my face twice a day and if it’s harmless, I don’t really care, lol.
Wouldn’t we be washing our eyelashes if we washed our face? Or I wonder how many people will be scrubbing extra hard around the eye area, rofl.
maybe later.
Cute little fella.
No, symbyotic relationships, all God’s creatures
Those little critters that live on our skin and eyelashes are in fact beneficial to our bodies. They eat dead skin cells. So it may be gross but they in fact serve a purpose.
good thing i have an obsession with bugs…thanks dan. thanks.
i need to go pull out all my eyelashes now…and im not wearing make up tomorrow.
ughhh. i washed my sheets yesterday
Thanks for freak’n grossing me out.
Nope.
I wouldn’t want to put the poor mite out of work. He might have a family. lol j/k But seriously, I’m not going to wash my eyelashes now.
I’ve survived thus far with them. I think I’m doing alright.
scare tactics…
Nope. But I am a bit creeped out.
ewwie, i’m probably not going to go off and scrub my eyelashes but that picture creeps me out
ignore this comment
Actually, washing them is a bad idea. Those guys and other “good” bacteria are important. If your body is sterile its easier for the REALLY dangerous germs to come and attack it.
No. They haven’t done anything to me before and I’m sure they don’t now.
But i am paranoid about my pillow sometimes.
that could sting some
i just read the link. i think i threw up a little bit.
i think i have irrational phobias.
no… but I might make it a habit to wash my pillowcase now(more then it already is. I love my underdog pillowcase)
Nope. But sometimes when I read things like this, I suddenly get the urge to itch all over my body. (c:
Mmmnope.
There’s lots of little bugs living on us. And have been for eternity. Why start worrying now?

I agree. They aren’t doing anything bad.
Thanks for reminding me.. I’d finally been able to rid a movie I saw about the little critters from my mind a couple years ago, and there ya go, bringing it back up again. Now I’m going to be terrified to walk on, touch, or eat anything.
It’s just creepy.
Not really.. well, creepy, yes, but not that severe. I don’t think I’m going to wash my eyelashes though.
nope. i don’t care.
I am a very clean person, so I dont have them
Doesn’t suprise me.
Nah, all that microscopic stuff doesn’t really freak me out. I figure we’ve all had those things living on our bodies all along. . .even before we knew about them.
Now I AM a hand-washing Nazi, when someone gets sick in the house, so I guess I’m only O.K. with the little boogers that don’t cause infection or disease.
Now im scared to sleep at night :’(
Ah, no. I have to finish my english paper first.
fuck no.
I think I’m gonna wash my eyelids a little better now considering I’m always wearing eye makeup…
yes
dammit, i’m gonna go wash my face now. thanks.
Not at all.
i just had to read this right before i went to sleep didn’t i? ::cries::
EEEWWWW! The thought of it with the picture just gives me the heebie-jeebies. I should be over it by tomorrow. *cringe*
i always wash my face before bed… so I guess I’m washing my eyelashes.
that’s why you’re supposed to go to bed clean
I already did wash my eyelashes.
I have oily skin and I wear makeup pretty much every day. Those little guys must be loving me.
I think we’re (or at least I am) better off being unaware of certain things.
I feel crawly.
Blech.
Heh, that picture is kind of cool. It would take a lot more than that to make me go wash my eyelashes.
*takes big deep gasping breath* *stares at picture* oh…… dear……..
Yeah, i’ll be washing around my eyelashes at night more thoroughly….
I’m not going to be able to sleep at night now.
And I’m going to go all OCD now, too.
I have an odd fear of maggots (any other form of regular insect or arachnid doesn’t bother me) and these things are too much like tiny maggots. I can’t take this. I really can’t. I’m going to put soap my eyes up every time I shower from now on. I’d rather be blind than have those things on me…
I HATE THEM SOOO BADLY.
Dan, you’ve ruined my life…
The next time I feel a little twitch in my eye, I might stop and wonder. Hard to think about without shuddering!
haha! oprah had a show on this. to be really safe you’re supposed to wash your sheets, pillow cases, and blankets every week in temperatures at least above 150 degrees fahrenheit to kill off the mites. same with cloths
I hate bugs. I knew of these…but I never knew what they looked like.
Thanks a lot Dan. Now I’m going to have nightmares.
No,I like to think that they keep company with all the other critters that I support.
No. If they were macroscopic, I would wash them off. However, I can’t see them so they can stay.
If they try to make it into my stomach, we may have to fight. I don’t eat cooties.
and that image was taken with an electron microscope. those things are tiny, tiny. there are worse thing to worry abut than minuature leeches.
No.
I do every night! Good for me.
I once saw footage of the thingies that live on cheese. It was years before I could eat the stuff again. *shudders*
yuck.
Oh Ewwww…..
seriously gross….
Oh Ewwww…..
seriously gross….
It’s a symbiotic relationship, folks. We all need each other.
I think I might get sick. I really wish I had not read that :-/ However, I religiously wash my face and eyelashes because of my eye makeup so I don’t feel as grossed out as I would if I didn’t do that. Stiil though…EWWWWWWWW!
come to think of it, we are surrounded by bacteria everywhere, unless you in a extreme sterile place eg a surgery room.. so, no im not guna wash my face. these are the facts of life…sigh
If those things grow to .4 cm or more, then I’ll wash the sheets. If I get any shampoo on my eyelids, it’s going to be by accident. That junk burns.
There are ugly living things all over me. I’m okay with that since they’re microscopic, I don’t feel them, and they’re not killing me.
EW. NEVER EVER SHOW ME ANYTHING LIKE THIS AGAIN. THAT STUFF FREAKS ME OUT!!!
awww, how cute!
Like washing our sheets and cleaning our eyebrows more often will get them to quit producing. I don’t think it’s anything to really worry about.
Umm…no.
damn you to hell dan
GROSS!!!
i dont know
yes i am. gross.
i don’t wear a lot of make up and i wash my face everyday. so. no
i hate you.
!!
WHY?
This mite can acually be found on dogs. It is not the same but it is called demodex. It can cause hair loss and itching.
I remember seeing a show on mites when I was about 8 years old. I freaked but I’m over it now. Mostly…
ahh, I’m gonna go wash every pore of my being and go on a frenzy cleaning the house……at least that’s the picture going on in my mind. I’m actually too lazy to do anything, so I guess the little buggers got lucky.
