Breastfeeding and Myspace
Myspace is threatening to shut a site down if the mother continues to place pictures of herself breastfeeding her child. Melissa Rocks has said the network keeps removing images on her myspace of her nursing her child. She has reported that myspace has told her that the images are “too sexual.” Here is the link: Link
Should breastfeeding pictures be banned from myspace?

Yep.
I don’t care. If that’s what she wants people to see, so be it.
theres plenty of other pics that they need to consider to sexual
yeah
yeah theres much more to worry about besides breastfeeding
how about removing the pictures of the 13year olds with there stuff about to pop out of there shirts…
yeah
hold up??
breastfeeding is sexual? its the way a baby eats! how it gets nourishmen, not how a mother gets pleasure.
why is myspace saying things are too sexual? its myspace
Ally, I think it’s more of an issue of what people want to see, or what people can legally see, more than what the lady wants people to see.
Of course, with all the junk on whorespace, it seems like this paricular issue would be the least of their worries.
I have a breast feeding pic on my myspace and they haven’t done anything
breastfeeding is too sexual, but 14-year-olds in bras and miniskirts, legs open to the world aren’t?
gimme a fscking break!
Fight Mental Illness Stigma
Yeah
yes, atleast she could not show anything “explicit” maye jsut another angle for the photo
ewwww boobs
it’s the stupid christian influence in this country…
Usually I’m pretty liberal about these things, but nudity is nudity
There are far more sexual pictures of teenage girls scantily clad on myspace than a mother who is breastfeeding.
Wow, i had no idea that the myspace people were “stupid christian influences” — hmmm…
I don’t have a problem with it unless it goes against the rules on myspace. Apparently it does.
it’s the stupid pagan influence in this country…
Let’s label and name-call, ilostagain. That should solve all our problems.
myspace is taking over the world
No, only morons should be banned from myspace.
No!
There are SO many worse things to ban!!
Gaww.. You see? That’s why I dont have a myspace.
Because of the stupid people that run it.
If breastfeeding is too sexual for MySpace,
then the Suicide Girls should have their site completely deleted.
I mean, it’s only fair.
Not necessarily.
But why’d she put ‘em up anyway?
But no, a baby eating is not really.. err.. hm. I really can’t answer this question without knowing her motives. If she wanted to show the world she’s a proud mother, so be it.
i think they should be taken off.. unlike in a public place where the mother is feeding her child for nurishment, that is online – and the fact that most people on myspace, xanga, ect are under 18 means that they do not see it as art or whatever the mother says it on there for. This will prob end up with her suing myspace and he taking the pic off for like 1 million dollars or something. I dont understand why people make such a big deal about this stuff… its a pic… just put up another one or get your own website people. I mean, its only like 25 bucks a month to get your own site. Most kids dont have the money to do that – hence, they make “profiles” on myspace and such.

Sexually expicit photos should be banned. I doubt that breast feeding pictures are sexually explicit or show more skin than a bikini. If there are pictures that show banned portions of the bosy they should be eliminated, but I am willing to bet that in a brief browsing of myspace I could find many more truly sexual pictures.
yes, as should then pictures of people playing beer pong, drinking, sex-ing up, and wearing almost no clothing.
I’m sure there are some truly x-rated things that should be banned, but if breastfeeding is banned what’s next, outlawing it in society altogether? Not letting a mom breastfeed?
But that’s another question for another day: “does the government interfere too much in people’s personal lives?”
Hint: The answer is YES!
the is myspsace, this is xanga.
dont care.
but if you really want to know, id say it depends on the image, some are ok,others should be kicked out.
Breastfeeding is not sexual, but neither should it be displayed for public consumption. Why would someone want to post pics of such a thing if not for some shock value? Myspace has bigger fish to fry if they are out to cook someone.
Oh, yeah. I know so many people with fetishes of women breastfeeding…
it’s the stupid christian influence in this country…

not Christian nessisarily, just the fear of being sued; it is what drives most companies to monitor their stuff.
breastfeeding is too sexual, but 14-year-olds in bras and miniskirts, legs open to the world aren’t?

… morons should be banned from myspace.
Posted 2/22/2007 7:40 PM by Soultender
yeah, same here.
I could probably find 100 pictures in 20 minutes on random blogs that should be removed of kids under the age of 16 showing off their goodies because mommy & daddy don’t keep a watchful eye on their kids.
I am sick to of all the breastfeeding controversy.
Breasts are made to nourish children.
maybe, but i think that their are much worse pictures on there that need to be dealt with first.
there*
Well, as I have heard there are many worse things to worry about on myspace…
But please tell me; why in this twisted world does someone NEED to post pictures of breastfeeding? It seems like she’s doing it for the sake of doing it instead of because she NEEDS the photos on there. That statement may have been extremely naive.
I honestly don’t care. Why does she want them up so badly? And in any case, doesn’t she realize some perverted guys would get turned on by it?
Honestly though, I think there are more important things going on in the world.
There are much worse pictures that need to be regarded first. Twelve year old whores for example. What about that? They are far worse than a mere breast feeding picture.
Considering what other pictures are on myspace that are more than sexual, breastfeeding is okay with me.
Why does she want them up? If they warned her about it and repeatedly removed them, shouldn’t she have the common sense and NOT put them back up?
As I mentioned before, twelve and thirteen year old tramps, and sick pedophiles raping them because of their suggestive pictures. Tom should be paying more attention to that.
yeah. Myspace is for social networking and keeping in contact with friends. If she wants to share pictures, she should use photobucket or something.
I dunno how breastfeeding a child is sexual, but okay.
i don’t even get why people would want to post pictures of them breastfeeding on the internet. like.. what do they expect the comment to be?
“aww… your baby looks so cute while drinking your milk”?
while i feel like breast feeding is a truly natural thing… i kinda feel like people who fight over public breast feeding like the way she did kinda… want attention and do it just to GET attention.
and besides. it’s the site’s rules. YOUR on it. get over it. their rules. make your own site if you want to post pictures of you breastfeeding.
and dont’ even get me started on when a restaurant’s would stop you from breastfeeding. i think people who are like “it’s a natural thing. let me do it” do they ever consider that the people around them feel uncomfortable?
yea. i think the whole breastfeeding issue is stupid. let them do it if they do it in public, but if they politely ask you to please stop or do it somewhere else i dont’ think people should make a big deal out of it.
long pointless comment.
If you don’t want to see the picture of her breastfeeding, there is a simple solution–CLICK THE DAMN RED X IN THE CORNER. NOBODY IS FORCING YOU TO LOOK AT THE PICTURE.
why would we WANT to see that anyways?
yeah. that’s disgusting, no one wants to see it. have a little decency for goodness sake.
I don’t understand why she’d put them up in the first place..
Yah. Not because they’re sexual, just because they’re gross.
Why post them in the first place?
There’s pictures on myspace that are WAY more sexual that they haven’t removed, why aren’t they focusing on those?
She’s just a proud mother, and I don’t see anything wrong with that.
To all you crazy people who think that ’cause breast feeding is natural it should be done in public, allow me to point out that urination is natural. Am I allowed to urinate in a restaurant? Ok, then. Don’t breast feed in the restaurant.
That’s pretty stupid. Havn’t we had a topic similar to this before?
If they’re going to remove pictures of her breastfeeding on accounts of it being “too sexual,” they should go ahead and remove the pictures of the 12-year-old whores who put nasty pictures of themselves up. Really, since when did breastfeeding become bad, but 12-year-olds in bikinis become alright?
How is it sexual to breastfeed a baby? That’s the whole purpose of breasts… Sexual pleasure is not their main function…especially when feeding a baby.
I seriously have no problem when I see women breastfeeding their baby in public. It’s a perfectly normal thing to do.
But I do wonder why on earth this woman put those pictures up on her Myspace…
Yes. That’s a personal, private thing, and personal, private things shouldn’t be posted all over the internet (not saying that they aren’t). Why would anyone take PICTURES of themselves breastfeeding? Why the heck was she putting them up anyway? When I think of pictures on myspace, I think of girls wanting to show off, and when I hear about a mother showing pictures of herself breastfeeding, I think firstly: mothers shouldn’t even be on myspace, so she’s probably young. and secondly: she’s vying for attention and she probably does mean it to be sexual, even if she won’t admit it. I’m probably all wrong but that’s just the general feeling I get.
I don’t find it offensice personally. But i can pretty much assure you she is doing this for attention. Is it really THAT big of a deal….? No…it’s not. I hate her for even causing a negative image to be placed upon such a natural thing. She is trash for posting pictures of it. I mean that.
myspace has lost its focus. seriously. all the other explicit pix don’t get shut down but this? mature people can see its not sexual. but then again she is setting herself up to get them taken down. what makes her think anyone wants to see that?? sure its “natural” but i’m pretty sure she can take better pics than that.
yea that’s gross
sure, why not
why would you want to post pictures of yourself nursing your child?
i’d say she was intending for the pics to come out as sexual
Psh no. Why don’t they ban girls in slutty clothes?
Dan, you love breasts.
The ads on the main myspace page are MUCH more sexual than a mother breastfeeding her child. Why don’t they regulate those?
who cares personally i could care less about what other people post
if thats what you want others to see then so be it
i wouldn’t do it but that doesn’t mean someone else can’t
and yes its true there are other things that are more sexuall than a mother breast-feeding her baby
I think so
I agree that there are probably worse things on myspace than pictures of a mother breastfeeding her child.
I can see the point of wanting to be able to breastfeed your child in public. As other people have said, it’s how the baby eats.
However, the mother does not need to have pictures of her child sucking her boob on myspace. It isn’t feeding the baby to have the picture up, it isn’t necessary. If you want to show that you’re a proud mother, great- but I’m sure you could find some pictures of you holding your baby where your breast isn’t hanging out.
In virtual space, any extenuating circumstances for a woman breastfeeding her child no longer exist. Nudity is nudity, and I understand how myspace would have to enforce their policy here as much as anywhere else.
Why the hell would you take pictures of that? That’s like taking a picture of you on the crapper.
While I’m all for breastfeeding; best thing for the baby blah blah blah
There’s a time and a place for it. Posting pics of myspace isn’t the right place, nor is it when your college professor wipes out a boob to breast feed when you’re giving a presentation. (yes that happened at my school, luckily I didn’t have that class).
I don’t care. Did you know that when a baby initially grabs on to a nipple, it’s called “latching on”? Makes a baby sound like a little leech. A nursing student friend of mine in a maternity class told me.
But seriously, who puts pictures of them breastfeeding their kid online?
If they are modest pictures… no. If they are graphic… yes. Why would she want to put graphic pics up of her feeding her baby in the first place? Isn’t that supposed to be something special… a bond between you & your child?
Hell no. I can not believe that a breastfeeding mother is too sexual but a 14 year old with their nipples showing through a see through top and a skimpy mini skirt with “My Humps” playing in the background is not?
Nudity should be compulsory on both Myspace and Xanga. Why not? Deception is immoral, and clothing deceives by hiding flaws. Clothing is therefore immoral.
We all want to be moral, don’t we?
Strip.
NOW!
I think if myspace does ban her I will be deleting my account.
“Your MySpace.com profile may not include the following items: telephone numbers, street addresses, last names, and any photographs containing nudity”
Do the pics contain nuidty? If she is going to post a photo that violates myspace policy, she has little cause for complaint when they shut down her site. It’s one of the rules she agreed to when she joined. Myspace can do what they want with their own site.
I’m surprised Myspace referred to the breast-feeding photos as “too sexual”. I think their lawyers should have been a bit more careful with the wording.
Thats just fricken insane…..women have been breast FEEDING babies since the beginning of time…good gawd would some people just grow the hell up already
why is she posting them anyway? but sexual? come onnnnnnnn.
Not as long as they still allow profile pics of boys playing with their uhm… stuff. And that garbage is all over their precious little site.
um… YES.
psh.
brestfeeding is banned but a man holding an erect penis is not???? how about all those “women” in their underwear or less???? at least she is showing that she is being a good mother (by feeding her child, not nessisarily by breastfeeding) if it bothers you don’t look…
seriously, I’m so tired of this anti breastfeeding… get over it!!!
Yes, but it’s not really fair. There are tons of other pictures that are a great deal more sexual out there.
I don’t think breastfeeding for anyone is wrong – I nursed all five of mine, BUT, I don’t see the reason that she is posting this on her site??? Apparently, it is just to gain attention. No…I don’t even compare that with other sites where nudity is involved. I am merely thinking of the brains (or lack thereof) of why this woman would choose to do this? Why would her husband allow it? What does she have to gain? Too few brain cells circulating.
First of all, why would she even put pictures of herself breastfeeding her child?
I think that deserves to be kept in the privacy of her own home and not the people on Myspace to see.
what the hell? that is a totally natural process! if a baby didn’t breastfeed, its only other option would be the bottle, which is not as good for the baby. why is this bad? pictures of it may be taking it a little too far, but unless she is showing the nipple (which she shouldn’t be doing if she is doing it right) it can’t be any worse than some of the things on there. i’m sure you could find quite a few pictures on there that show just a wee bit more than she does, and those won’t be considered ‘too sexual.’ maybe it is just because the operators of myspace get boners from the pictures, and that turns them off, but that’s just me guessing…
nothing should be banned from anything.
what happened to America?
land of the free my ass.
Oh my God…What are we, Puritans? When did it become sexual for a woman to breastfeed her child? How perverted. All she could possibly be showing is the clevage of her breast if she were breastfeeding and anyone who posts a picture of Anna Nicole Smith on xanga has seen more than that! Shame on MySpace. I think that anyone feeling that that is even remotely sexual is a pervert.
i think it is tacky that a mature woman would do that. im tired of people doing shit like that, so they can say they are being discriminated against and/or picked on, then sue.
that woman is an asshole.
Their are worse things on myspace.com (or Xanga.com for that matter)
~Kyle
Please check my entry on Thursday the 22nd and see what you think.
I’d have to see the picture in question.
Although I dunno why she’d wanna put up pictures of her breastfeeding this kid online, I wouldn’t think it should be considered sexual. o_o It’s just the kid eating, right?
That was a private thing for me – a bonding and nourishing of the baby. It shouldn’t be displayed – I mean why would it?
whats the purpose of them? Thats not sarcastic, thats a literal question. Is it a site for mothers? Is it a site for teenage boys, teenage girls, young adults, 12 year olds. Is it a private site?
….i have seen worse
are you shitting me? i’m not a fan of pornography, and i’m certainly not a fan of 14-16 year old posing in positions wearing things that would get you ticketed for indecent exposure, but BREASTFEEDING? oh, let me tell you what, that sure gets me feeling all kinds of randy… better ban the hell out of them, quick! wow. heaven forbid her child should eat in public. poor lady. i’m personally proud of her for breastfeeding.
As a christian Im going to have to say it depends on the picture..if it is some crass photo of a close up of some womans nipple and a baby somewhere nearby…then yes, maybe someone should urge her to restrain herself…but if its just a tender moment of some baby having lunch…whats the problem?
Among all the other pictures on myspace, they chose to delete these ones?
the site is shit, and this is what they care about?
uhmmmlet me think….ya.
Only if they’re too revealing. What’s sexual about breastfeeding? I don’t really understand why she wants them on there though. But whatever floats your boat, I guess.
No… it’s her space, she can do what she wants with it. Plus, their reason is ludicrous; too sexual? Please, if you find that sexual, you have some therapy that needs goin’ to.
Does Rupert Murdoch employ 15 year old moderators by any chance? That would go part way towards explaining the apparent double standards….
I hate MySpace.
What does Tom have to say about this ???
I in no way think its sexual. Intimate is more the word I think about. And a very personal time for her and the baby. I post a lot things on my myspace but I dont think I would this. But she isnt the only one that does it. So they better be taking the rest of them off too! Just to be fair.
BUT I think they should be worrying about other stuff besides this. Someone I read stated to the effect… they should be going after the 13 year olds with stuff hanging out (I know that misquoted but close I think) I completely agree… Atleast the mom with her baby isnt sickening.
No thats stupid. People put up pictures with just thongs and bras on….pull those not something natural like breatfeeding.
*Groan* Oh yes. Breastfeeding is so sexy. Especially when the baby is nursing and spits up at the same time-ooh, baby. *rolls eyes* But yeah, as other people have said, there’s nothing wrong with half naked 14 year olds prancing around on there, is there? How stupid.
What kind of person takes photos of a baby sucking their nipple?
Oh, for God’s sake! It’s maternal, not sexual. BUT… even if it was sexual, what’s wrong with sexual as long as it isn’t pornographic. I think we are reverting back to some kind of puritanical society that perverts “anything” involving sex and the body into something evil. Next thing you know they’ll be telling us you can’t wear sandles or show your big toe because someone might have a foot fetish. Jeez. What’s wrong with these people.
yeah… unless no teet is shown at all. i just said teet.
I don’t have a problem with people nursing, I plan on nursing my kid when it comes. I don’t even mind women nursing in public if they are discreet, but why would you post pictures of that on MySpace? That seems a little voyeristic.
It’s part of the cycle of life…feeding a baby.
C’mon…somethin’ is just wrong with that. However, considering the source of myspace, why should I be surprised.
To all you crazy people who think that ’cause breast feeding is natural it should be done in public, allow me to point out that urination is natural. Am I allowed to urinate in a restaurant? Ok, then. Don’t breast feed in the restaurant.
Posted 2/22/2007 8:28 PM by XristosAnesti
The difference is a restaurant has a place for you to go and pee in private. It does not have a place where you can go breastfeed your baby in private. I would certainly not breastfeed a child of mine in a bathroom…However, I would also cover up so that it was not obvious what was going on.
I think that she has a right to post the pictures if that is what she feels like she wants to show on her site. As long as her actual nipples are not showing I don’t think that would be considered sexual in any state.
I don’t know – Haven’t seen the pictures.
oh my freaking…
how DARE they say that a breastfeeding mother is too sexual when they have freaking porn sites on there for anyone to add as friends! they don’t remove THOSE sites! why the eff not?!
noooooo. Instead, they remove pictures of a lady feeding her child.
and all the advertising, that’s not borderline pornographic now, is it? or what about the pictures that others put up where they’re drunk and half-naked?
seriously, WTF?!
if breastfeeding is “sexual,” then is it correct to say that the mother and child have an incestuous relationship?
this is possibly the most depressing topic ever.
if breastfeeding a kid is sexual, then a lot of people are pretty effin’ sick. does anyone remember a debate that raged on for quite some time a few years back about breastfeeding in public?
somehow, people seem to think this is offensive but that makes no sense to me. some babies need to be fed nearly every two hours and for a woman to have to plan her day’s schedule around this so she won’t flash her goods is absurd.
on that note, once our very prudish nation gets over the shock value of seeing breasts (had we been in europe breasts would be EVERYWHERE, on the cover of magazines, and yes, nipples showing) it really shouldn’t be a big deal. i mean, i’ve seen women publicly breastfeed. maybe it’s shocking that they’re so public about it, but let’s get real. i’m not like WHOA, she’s showing her tit. leave her be; she’s feeding her baby.
that’s the same reaction you should have when you see a picture. i can’t imagine people honestly being offended by that.
with that being said, you know there’s something wrong when people are labeling twelve year olds “whores” for conforming to the norms society has inculcated their children with (that includes magazines covers, idols, shows).
As has been said, if it’s against myspace’s rules, then yes it should be banned.
I know that a majority of people don’t get their jollies looking at a woman breastfeeding, but it’s obviously nudity. If they are against nudity, it should be banned. Even if that doesn’t include the 14 year old skanks who are almost nude and are as such in a more sexual context.
It dosn’t seem fair for Myspace to pick on her compared to the type of explicit photos that appear on their adds and on so many of their sites…but on the other hand why is it such a big deal for her to have the pictures up? If I were her I would give it up. Seriously…whats the big deal with being a bit extra modest anyways? It certainly wouldn’t hurt her!
Okay, I have no problem with people breast feeding. I have no problem with a woman breast feeding during church with something covering up a bit.
It’s like, I know you find your tits as sexual as a sandwich but not everyone shares that view!
uh well there is other things on myspace that r 2 sexual
“I could probably find 100 pictures in 20 minutes on random blogs that should be removed of kids under the age of 16 showing off their goodies because mommy & daddy don’t keep a watchful eye on their kids.”
That’s so true…
“yeah. that’s disgusting, no one wants to see it. have a little decency for goodness sake…”
Get real, dude. Breasts were put there for the purpose of feeding a child. (not for your enjoyment) If U dont want to look at them – DONT DO IT. There are far worse things out there on PUBLIC TELEVISION.
I think they should leave her alone… After all…its HER space.
Breastfeeding is a wonderful thing and should be promoted. It has nothing to do with sex.
are you serious?
There are more explicit pictures on myspace of underage girls! If they are seriously complaining about a Mommy Boob, which is probably not in the best shape of its life, they have issues.
I am an advocate of breastfeeding and there is nothing sexual about it. It is close-minded folks like this that make it hard for women to FEED their children whether in public or not. Im sure if she feels comfortable showing pictures like that, then so be… why dont they focus their sights on bigger problems.
myspace is worried about ‘too sexual’ images around their site?? since when??
not that i think myspace should ban those baby photos, but if the mother is only re-posting them again and again for ‘rebellious’ reasons, then that’s pretty darn dumb.
ps. i realized i’m no longer considered a teenager! YAYYYY!!
how in the hell is breastfeeding sexual?!?!?!?! at alllll??????
Yes it should.
I’m not saying it’s sexual.
yes. those are personal pictures…one’s that need to be kept to herself and not shown to everyone in the world.
Breastfeeding pictures can’t be much worse than the myspace dating ads.
if people didnt want to see that.. they could just uhm. leave her site maybe!?
…
I can’t imagine wanting people on the internet and all over the world to see me breastfeeding my child; it just seems like that would be kind of a personal thing? I could be totally wrong. I’m a guy, so I can’t say much except “my” motives for visiting a site where a woman posted pictures of breastfeeding her child should certainly be in question. My sister is studying to be a midwife, so I’ve been exposed to enough of the “weirdness” that some midwives subscribe to, and it would seem very mild to me if a woman was using this as an example of good breastfeeding, or if say she was doing a study… I can certainly see there might be a practical explanation for her desire to post graphics.
I don’t know, really. You do have a tendency to dig up some of the strangest conversation pieces, I’ll give you that. Maybe she should move it to Xanga…?
no i don’t understand how its supposed to be sexual its a way babys eat!!!
Ewww. YES!
Why does she feel the need to post them?
Weirdos stalk adults too sometimes.
Of all the lame-brain idiotic things to do. *rolling eyes* Have you been at myspace lately? A breastfeeding Momma is too sexual??? Give me a break. I’ve seen some pictures there….
why does a mom need myspace?
I agree with Steph843…while breastfeeding may be a beautiful and innocent part of nature…some pervert is still gonna see it and look at it in a sexual way because nudity is nudity…while the human body is beautiful it can also be a stumbling block and therefore we must all be careful…i guess it all comes down to: we live in a fallen world
I think she should put her profile on private.
If you want to see it add her.
If you don’t, then don’t add her.
Stop complaining! Theres more to life than MYSPACE!
If they are going to censor the breast…then censor it completely. Too sexual….please.
how is that sexual…?
Um, since when is breastfeeding sexual? It’s the natural way to feed a baby.
Personally, I wouldn’t put up pictures of myself breastfeeding because there are perverts out there…
Yes
Plus, they own it, they can make up the rules!!! Why does she want to share something that alot of people may not want to see. She make her own breast feeding site and have all the pics she wants
woo is it? just because of a pic, my space gonna shut down?..well i guess u can’t promote urself in myspace anymore ha2
lol.
NO! If another adult woman or adult male was suckling this woman’s breasts then that would be considered to be a sexual by most. That’s only because our society has given the female breast a reputation of being a sexual object used for sexual gratification when in reality a female breast in nothing but a baby bottle. An infant child suckling it’s mother’s breast is NOT a sexual image. I think MySpace needs to worry about the real threats on MySpace and stop harrassing a mother and her infant child.
Yes. People don’t need to see that.
Yes. People don’t need to see that.
No! Breastfeeding is not sexual. It’s natural.
(i could go into how sexuality is natural as well, but that’s for another time)
