  • Comments

Hi, this is Dan’s wife again.  I’ve had the chance to read a few comments today.  There is a mystery that I don’t understand as a person who doesn’t blog.

Would someone explain to me the purpose for celebrating who’s first?

Comments (136)

  • i actually have no idea.

  • more comments, popularity

  • OH MY GOD, I’M FIRST! …just kidding.

  • supposedly

  • More people read what you wrote.

And it shows your devotion to this very blog.

  • same thing as chocogirl43

  • a lot of people subscribe/read this blog
that just happens to be smaller chances of being the first to comment
much like lottery….but you don’t win money.

    hmm…

  • What snowpatrolchick said…I guess…

  • well it’s just exciting, since he has 90813981393 readers and all. to be the first to comment is like an accomplishment, i suppose.

  • Dan likes those one’s best it shows commitment! lol

  • Making the first page of comments is no small feat, either.

  • i just realized something. that was sincerely the first time i was first. iiiiiiirony, party of one!

  • There is no purpose.
    It’s just lame to e-shout, “FIRST!”…

  • I guess it’s exciting because there are soooo many people who read this site and comment regularly.

    *shrug*

…Wow, I’ve never been on the first page before.

  • Since he gets so many comments so quickly, there’s something strangely exciting about being the first commenter. I can’t really put my finger on it.

  • There is none. It’s just that so many people on here are idiots.

  • Popularity and Xanga traffic is hard to come by these days. =]

  • i agree w/ chocogirl43…more people read your comment. but then again, if the whole benefit of being first is that more people read what you write does it really make a whole lot of sense to use that space to proclaim that you’re first?? i mean, we’re all intelligent ppl here so i think we’d be able to tell that you’re the first to comment without you having to mention it…

  • Your hubby is a bit of an internet celebrity. Being first on Dan’s blog is kind of like being a sports fan who happens to be in the background on ESPN.

  • I have no idea

as you saw before I didn’t say “First” with the most common phrase people say (or saying)

  • there isn’t one. those people are dumb. they deserve to have lead injected into thier viens and die from a slow lead poisoning

  • Yeah, CoffeeRevolutionary hit it right on the nose.

  • It’s like finding a quarter on the ground, kinda. It’s mostly luck, but we’d like to pretend that there’s something kinda special about having been able to hit “submit” before anyone else. It’s also the same feeling as being the first one to get a new CD at a bookstore, or be the first of your friends to read the latest Harry Potter.

  • 1. It lets you join the ‘I was first, thus Dan must love me more’ group
    2. People are 100x more likely to read your comment
    3. And people are also more likely to visit your blog
    4. It makes you feel special because everyone else is trying to get first too, and you beat them!

  • I have no idea.  I think it’s pretty silly.

  • it only happens on dans site.

  • The magical, special feeling you feel inside is just too great to not say OMG FIRST!

  • Because, there are two thousand people posting and it’s so exciting when you’re the very first.

    …I guess?

It’s only happened to me once.

  • 1. It lets you join the ‘I was first, thus Dan must love me more’ group

    Posted 2/27/2007 8:03 PM by Excido_Charon

    best group ever.

  • I lurve being first. It’s so much fun to beat all the other commentors to the punch.

  • um… I guess cuz there’s alot of people who comment on this thing, and to get the first comment means that… you were on at the same time as Dan? lol not sure how that makes us cooler or better… haha

  • hey dans wife! hi.

  • it’s tradition!

  • They say that Dan will love you more if you are 1st.

  • hello, dan’s wife.

    that makes two of us.

  • ya, this site is the big thing on xanga. so if you just HAPPEN to be the first to read his post and comment then its as if you beat the whole world.

  • i have no clue, but is rather hard to get, so in that sense it is an accomplishment.

  • i don’t know… i don’t do it.

  • I wouldn’t know, I’ve never been first. Just another joy I get to miss out on I suppose. =/

  • I have never understood that. I think it might be an immaturity issue.

  • A sense of self achievement because we can’t achieve anything else.  HAHAHA.

Just kidding, there’s no purpose, but it’s just hard to do on this page.

  • If I ever comment, I try my hardest NOT to be first.  I guess that’s the non-conformist double-standard.

  • Dan gets a lot of comments on each of his posts(or used to). Nearly always 150+ and they come in fairly fast, so if you were fast enough to comment first, then…you were faster than everyone else…..that’s it.

nothing cool, and I think it’s only on this site.

  • i agree with

More people read what you wrote.

And it shows your devotion to this very blog.

  • LOL.  I odn’t know.  I have never done it.

  • IT ROX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! XXXXXX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • There is no purpose.
    It’s just lame to e-shout, “FIRST!”…

    ___________
    hahhaah.

  • The joy of being the only person out of 200+ xangans who is first.

  • I agree. But I think for the most part it is the competitive streak in people coming out.

  • It’s sort of like winning a card game, and flaunting that you won. At least that’s how I look at it.

  • Haha . All the answers here are so funny.

  • I’m still trying to figure that one out.

After this you’ll have to attempt to figure out why a lot of people flip out (in a good way) when Dan gives them a comment.  The way some people react you would think he was the messiah incarnate or something along those lines.  (Not to say he isn’t a nice or popular guy, but my goodness gracious, there are blogrings for both situations.)

Oh, and by the way, Hello Dan’s Wife!  Nice to comment on your blog-post-thing.

  • Personally, I think it’s lame and silly. but this wraps it up:

    1. It lets you join the ‘I was first, thus Dan must love me more’ group
    2. People are 100x more likely to read your comment
    3. And people are also more likely to visit your blog
    4. It makes you feel special because everyone else is trying to get first too, and you beat them!
    Posted 2/27/2007 8:03 PM by Excido_Charon

  • Competition. Like somehow one’s opinions only matter if they’re first.

    If they matter at all.

  • because so many people comment on your husband’s site. they take pride being the 1st to comment when so many people comment.

    i think its stupid. =)

  • i was 1st, maybe twice since i’ve subscribed to his blog.

It is such a rarity that whenever it happens, it’s an interesting surprise.

Don’t know about the whole traffic thing…it’s just that Dan is pretty popular.

  • Dan’s wife, thanks. I was getting sick of opinion-based questions..and answers.

    Yay for objectiveness.

  • it like finding free money or something. plus its cool!

  • well it’s just exciting, since he has 90813981393 readers and all. to be the first to comment is like an accomplishment, i suppose.
    Posted 2/27/2007 7:54 PM by x_becki

    lol.  exactly.

  • I think it’s moronic and offensive; shows they’d rather log how far they are into your comments than actually read your post.

  • Ask the girl who was first

  • With so many people who comment and so many people who comment in a short span of time, it becomes a competition. It’s such a challenge to be the first one to comment (which is generally meaningless and often accompanied by “FIRST!!!” or some like phrase) that if you do, you feel… like you have succeeded at life? I don’t know, as I’ve never been the first to comment.

  • yeah it’s kinda like a contest to see who can make it first…like a mini lottery

  • Testosterone/Estrogen.

    (Mostly the former.)

  • Evidently some people have the need to feel s1gn1f1cant.

  • I suppose it is because there is such a large number of people who routinely comment on Dan’s blogs that it is truly a wonder if you manage to be the first to comment an entry.

  • Dan gets crazy comments! Sometimes he’ll actually read your comments and comment back! I guess it helps to be closer to the top. :O)

  • Is this really Dan’s wife? Exact same writing style as Dan…hmmm.

  • absolutely no purpose…just a meaningless comment to announce oneself. i find it incredibly obnoxious.

  • that’s a good question. i have no idea.
    <3Always,
    Nary

  • P.S Dan’s wife you should write more entries. yours are interesting. hehe no offense to Dan..he’s cool too!
    <3Always,
    Nary

  • By celebrating being the first to comment you are showing that you waste more time on the internet than anyone else.

  • I think the people on the first page covered the answer to your question pretty well.

Same writing style? As in grammatically correct and with punctuation? xD… joking. Sorta. But maybe I just read it differently because you acknowledged that you’re his wife and not him. There’s a bit of a different tone. Why would someone write a post on here and say they were someone else, anyway? There’s no much sense in it…

  • beats the hell out of me

  • I think its because he has so many people read his blog so they are surprised when they are first.  I admit I did it once and I did it because I am usually really late in commenting and yet here I was first, lol

  • there is no point the reason people do it is because they feel like they beat everyone else to the top
and lets be honest this site gets lots of comments and just being at the top of a list of many other people is just what makes people feel better
and if it does so be it

  • 83rd=P
no,but its hard to do, i guess.
    i was only second once..

  • P.S Dan’s wife you should write more entries. yours are interesting. hehe no offense to Dan..he’s cool too!
    <3Always,
    Nary

Pfft, what are you talking about? Dan’s wife’s entries own Dan’s entries.

He’s not going to read this. :D

    I hope. :|

  • Jeez! why are some people on here so freaking mean?!
So some people get excited about little things! Don’t ruin it for them!

  • It’s a status symbol mostly. And plus you get to join the blogring.

  • That’s bizarre… almost as bizarre as starting a webring like “I commented first, so Dan loves me more” or something like that.

  • LOL! I’ve never understood that either.  Maybe it means these people are addicted to Xanga or perhaps obsessed with your hubby!

  • I don’t know about the first thing………why don’t you blog?

  • I noticed that when I’m first commenter I get a lot more footprints than if I don’t comment at all or if I’m one of the later commenters.

  • It’s really just the random luck of happening to be online at the exact right moment.. it’s kinda similar to how people celebrate a good parking spot.. except here, everyone can see, where with the spot the “YES! SWEET!” you yell is only heard by you and those in the car.

  • well considering the fact that a post can get over a hundred comments…one feels a certain sense of achievement being the first comment.

  • I forgot to say “Hi!” to Dan’s wife.  Nice of you to stop in.

I, (trying not to be prideful about it) did not celebrate when I was first.  I was a little in shock, but I didn’t celebrate – on screen.  A little “happy dance” at home was sufficient.

  • oh yeah and last time I was first commenter Dan actually came to my blog, read the first one, and commented! So it does have its perks

  • HI DAN’s WIFE!!!! :)   What’s it like beign marreid to a xangacelebrity?

  • Because this site has so many users on it at the same time, it’s like a little race. I’ve been first like 3 times. It’s rewarding almost.

  • Dan posts so many times and so so so many people comment, its a small prize to be the first to find his new post, and people start commenting so quick, its better to just post FIRST! if you find that you are indeed first, then make your actual comment later.  Though I’ve never been first before, top ten a few times.

  • hahahahahhahaha.

  • dan’s like, a celebrity you know…

  • I was first about ten times now and the first time was the best!! I gloated the first and second times, now  I just smile !! It makes me smile to be first on anyones site!

  • It’s just your husband’s popularity. The hundreds of people who comment later will read the first page of comments.

  • By celebrating being the first to comment you are showing that you waste more time on the internet than anyone else.

All of these answers were awesome and so fun to read, but I think the answer above was my favorite.

I didn’t know Dan was a Xanga Celebrity. Man. I’m in the presence of greatness and didn’t even know it!

About being first: I was totally psyched when I was fifth. I had to like stop and catch my breath.

As for my answer: Ummm…I think it totally feeds the competitive nature in some humans. We are on the internet. How many ways are there to compete with other humans here, afterall?

BTW, I think I may be LAST! How cool is that…

  • because so many ppl post that its cool when you see that youre the first one… because no matter how soon you see it… theres always somehow someone before you… thats the internet for you… and its just cool to see that you were that person that beat out everyone else…

  • people like to think that they’re special.

  • It’s to entertain the wankers!

  • there are loads of people hu drop by this page and most of em leave comments whether it makes sense or not.. so it wud be lyk a “biggie” if ur comment was the 1st.. what are d odds??

  • its human nature to be competive that anything is a contest including being the first to comment

  • non sense

  • YOU will be seen by all….basking in Dan’s celebrity….oh my.

    LAST!!!!!!!YES~~~~~!!!..

sniff…no one will read MY entry…..

  • It’s just neat to realize that this person just put up this blog and you were the first one – means………. you’re on the same time frame – LOL

  • Good question. I don’t know what the big deal is either.

  • I am never first and it makes no difference to me

  • so you can join the “I was first, so dan must love me more” blog ring.

  • Um… because you’ve won? You’ve beaten everyone? Good question. Personally, I don’t care who’s first.

  • I wouldn’t know, not having experienced being “first” ever. I’s settle for a close second, though.

  • It means that Dan loves me more

  • ha i don’t really get it either

  • I dont know, i think its LAME and a waste of space and thought.

  • i dunno. i get a daily xanga digest (containing posts from the previous day) so i don’t worry about being first or not.

  • because it makes you epeen bigger. Nah really, its just an ego boost for some to hit first on a popular site. I foudn it odd that people came ot my blog to say grats on first the day I got first. Its creepy if you ask me.

  • that celebration is for people who can’t read things with massive content.

  • Cuz they’re dorks. And I’ve never been first, so I wouldn’t know. Second once though.

  • haha good question dan never has questions that…intense. wow, that shuts up quite a few people. wow, made my day

    Derek

  • oh man, having someone ask that is really funny to me…

i secretly want to be first…

    because its awesome

  • As someone else said earlier, a)  More people read what you write.  b)  It shows your devotion to the blog.

And, c) We have a competative nature.  d)  It’s not very often that you’re first!  I’ve only been in the top ten once, and that time only at eighth place!

  • Dince Dan’s so famous, the first person on here has the first spot and it’s like….

    I have no idea. I guess it’s a race.

  • it is like taking the first drink out of a cold fresh can of diet coke.  the first drink is always the best.

  • there isnt one

  • It’s like playing video games – It’s all about winning. lol

  • Dan gets so many comments that it’s an EXHILARATING RUSH to open your subscriptions and see a new post that no one has commented on so that you can rush over and comment!

  • Woo hoo!  #133!!!!!!! YESSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I WIN I WIN I WIN!!!!!!!!!!

  • Timing.

    It’s all about timing.

  • I was first once.

    I didn’t post first.

    I am a failure. i just answered, smug bastard that I am…

  • haha I’ve been trying to figure that out myself.
