  • Fluorescent License Plates

Republicans and Democrats in Ohio are uniting to force convicted sex offenders to use a “fluorescent-green license plate on their cars” so that people will easily be able to identify them.  A few states are reported to have them already for drunken drivers.

The plates will make it easier for police to track them.  Some are concerned that the law would “stigmatize” those who were in the car with them such as their spouse and children.  Here is the link:  Link

Should convicted sex offenders be required to have special license plates to make it easy to identify them?

Comments (177)

  • Shouldn’t they be in jail?

  • Hmm….I am on the fence with this one, leaning towards yes. It would be good for identifying them, but at the same time I can just imagine how often those vehicles would be vandalized, and the people who drive them constantly ridiculed.

  • I like the idea for repeat offenders when it comes to drunk driving. That seems to make sense.

  • i think convicted sex offenders should wear shirts that say “I’m a convicted sex offender”
or they belong in jail, as said by justiceandliberty

  • I have no problems with this!

  • I think that’s a little too far, honestly. Jail and castration however, I’m completely for.

  • drunk drivers–yes
    sex offenders–no
    multiple offense sex offenders–maybe

  • Interesting concept. I like it, however do you think it give kids a false sense of security if someone approached them who didn’t have the distinctive plate?

  • wow! theres only one comment on this thing!

  • Not sure. At first it seems like yes, but then again, what if the spouse or kids are driving?

  • oh, nevermind about the one comment

  • No. We all saw what happened to the Jews. That was an odd comparison.

  • I agree with the false sense of security comment.

  • We live in an evil graceless society…

  • It’s an interesting idea, but I don’t know if i would support it or not.

I’m gonna have to think about this one.

  • Okay, look. I know that sex offenders are risks for repeat offenses. But at the same time… I can’t help but think that, in an ideal world, after you’ve served your penalty for an offense there should be a possibility that you could change.

I believe it is possible for human nature to be reversed, and I believe it is possible for former molesters to become new people. And while we have to guard against the repeat offenders, we also have to allow for those that will change.

They already can’t live in certain towns, certain zones, certain suburbs. They already are banned from school grounds and public parks. They already get flyers put up whenever they move into a new house. I’m not knocking any of these practices, they all make sense, but to add the license plates to all that just seems like we’re going too far. What next, forehead brands?

Just castrating them, I think, would be kinder than this Scarlet-Letter-A sort of isolation.

  • i agree with: it’ll provide a false sense of security, it’ll stigmatize others in the car…no idea is perfect, i guess…

    *hugs*

  • If we guard our kids against ALL strangers, it won’t matter whether they’re a first-time molester or one of these repeats. If we protect them from everyone and teach them safety, it won’t matter what color the bad guy’s license plate is.

  • no that would be bad..  i believe people deserve second chance.. and that would be like a scarlet letter..  no matter how much the person has paid for the sin, or been changed…  the person will never be freed from the guilt other put on them..

    =(

    j

  • WooHoo. Go Ohio.

  • They should be doing life in prison.

  • repeat sex offenders have been given more than enough chances.  they aren’t going to stop (and yes I feel strongly about the subject).

with that said I think it would stigmatize the person driving the car, but it isn’t like they can’t drive someone elses’ car or have the car registered in somebody elses’ name to get a non-sex offender drivers license plate.  It’s a dumb idea that’s too easy to get around.

  • For people who have been arrested for drunk driving several times, yes.

    For convicted sex offenders, no.

  • We just discussed this in Comp. We agreed upon NO, but they should have their vehicle taken away (like in Oregon) for several years.

  • (The above is for drunk drivers only, lol. Sex offenders…I don’t know)

  • sure why not.

  • Is there some sort of time limit after which a convicted sex offender isn’t forced to register himself anymore?  Like… if some dude gets convicted of a crime, and he’s clean for X number of years, goes through counseling, etc, should he be given a normal life back?

  • pshhh who are they kidding?

that shit is going to become a trend.

everyones going to have one by next year.

    one in every color.

  • drunk driving multiple times, yes, but sex offenders? if it’s once, they’ve done their time, I agree with the scarlet letter comparison. multiple sex offenders though, maybe, but damn shouldn’t they just be in jail then?

  • That’s dumb. That is so dumb, I can’t even describe how dumb it is. Who are these people? What are they thinking? Creating a leper colony will only create a leper colony. It will stop nothing.

  • yes.

  • thats a tough question. I think it would be better to put something in the car only cops can read, like that thing for drunk driving (cant start the car til you breath into the machine and are alchohol free). Just a tracker, not something everyone will see. Just imagine what some extremist would do with that. A guy finds out his child was kidnapped, raped, and murdered. thats terrible. dreadful. he grabs a rifle and goes looking for a sex offender. the problem is the first one he spots will have served their time and be innocent of this crime.

    No fluorescent.

    Derek

  • If drunk drivers have them, might as well.

  • I am with  by ChrisRusso on the castration of repeat offenders,I don’t even think that repeat offenders should have a  drivers license which gives them  a wider area to  find more victims  to sexually offend.

  • Drunk drivers should have them.
    Sex offenders should have them.
And multiple time sex offenders should also have them.

And all three shouls be different colors so you can tell which is which.

  • nah, a big scarlet “S” tattooed on their forehead would be better.

  • How about we just install a GPS tracking device in their testicles?  That way, we can track them just as easily.  If they don’t like it, they can remove it themselves.

  • No. How many Drive-by’s and Vandalizations will happen after that?

  • No. How many Drive-by’s and Vandalizations will happen after that?
    Posted 2/28/2007 4:07 PM by DDRFreak098

Exactly. Turning them into outcasts and lepers won’t solve anything either.

  • They should be in jail!

  • Why not druggies while they’re at it?

  • If you are a sex offender you shouldn’t be in the car with a kid anyway.

  • if they’re out of jail, and not under probation or house arrest, they are free.

i’m not against making the homes of these people made public, but doing that to a car, something everyone will see and judge anyone in the car by, is wrong.

    so i say no.

they would be denying this person of their right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Let the justice system take care of punishments, not legislators.

  • ChrisRusso has sex with children.

  • Well, if we’re going to do that, might as well color code ALL license plates. Bright pink for sexual offenders, neon green for drunks, yellow for tax fraud, purple for PMSing bitches, blue for littering, orange for failing algebra. . . .

This system makes no way for the person to redeem themselves. People will judge them before knowing them and be paranoid. Same with DUI. I’m sure that if all the drunk drivers had to get a neon plate, we’d see a ton of them. So many people have had a DUI at least once in their life. But it’s in the past. Let it friggin’ go.

  • I think they should. They’re lucky to be driving around. Like they say, if you cant do the time, dont do the crime. They had to realize there’s gonna be some consequences to raping children -_-

  • dang… there goes my license plate..

ummm, can we get a hell yes for this?

and one for student drivers, kids (or adults) who just got their license… and one for the elderly… thank you!

  • Let’s just brand them with hot-irons on the forhead. Sounds like a good plan, doncha think?

  • I’d have no problems with it except that the family of the people would be unfairly treated if they were riding in the car with the sex offender or whatever, because you know that people wouldn’t act too nice to them on the road.

  • They’d more than likely register their car under a relative’s name if that was the case.

  • Sure. Why not? And while we’re on the subject of designated lisence plates I think that obese people shouldn’t be allowed to get handicapped plates, but they should get their own special one. It should be like a hamburger next to the digits with a big bite in it, and they would have to park in the very back of the parking lots. Haha. They need exercise.

  • No. We all saw what happened to the Jews. That was an odd comparison.

Side Note: Jews didn’t go around sexing innocent kids.

  • Shouldn’t they be in jail?

  • sex offenders should have tatoos that say “perv” on their foreheads

  • drunk drivers–yes
    sex offenders–no
    multiple offense sex offenders–maybe

    Shouldn’t they be in jail?
Posted 2/28/2007 3:20 PM by JusticeandLiberty
    Same thoughts here!

  • I’m kind of on the fence with this one… I don’t want to defend the sex offenders, but if they’ve served their time, they’ve served their time. On the other hand, protecting children or other potential victims is paramount.

  • so they’ll just rent a car each time they commit a sexual offense?

As far as drunks go-what about the wives and teenagers that might share the car?  I appreciate wanting to solve the DUI problem, but this isn’t the answer. Maybe they could require they have to have starters with breathalizers.

  • We already force sex offenders to alert everyone of their history when they move into a new neighborhood. I think that’s enough, since their crimes don’t affect their driving.

Having special license plates for drunk drivers sounds like a great idea, though.

  • probably not

then there will be license plates for the different races, maybe how much money you make, if you were late on taxes…where does it stop?

  • Actually I’ve been thinking about this more and I don’t think sex offenders who have only sex offended(?) once shouldn’t have it..
And multiple sex offenders should be in jail.

Drunk drivers? yes, they should have one.

  • What about the unfortunate fact that many sexual predators of children are those closest to them (i.e., parents, grandparents, aunts/uncles, siblings & cousins)?

  • I don’t think that sounds like too shabby of an idea.

But this reminds me of one of Ron White’s jokes. He said there should be a sign on the lawn of all convicted sex offenders. And he wants one so the kids will stay off of his porch.

  • I’m curious…how many of the people here who are advocating for S/Os to be flourescent green have actually done the research on their own to find out (1) what S/Os live or work in their community and (2) and what S/Os are wanted for non-reporting?

My point is, are we willing to to do the work that’s required to keep ourselves and our children safe, or are we once again just looking to the government to fix it for us?

  • maybe for repeat offenders.

  • My wife suggested castration, but the license plate idea is less intrusive… maybe, to tie your last three posts together, fat illegal alien sex offenders should have florencent license plates so we know who to make fun of…

  • I agree with part of porcupinesol, however I don’t think an S is sufficient. I think that it needs to say “I had sex with a child” on their foreheads. You saw the stares on ash Wednesday, imagine what would happen if we implemented this tattoo!

  • I would prefer a tattoo on their face and hobbling them would be a good thing as well

  • Sex offenders should be in jail for life.

  • castration.

  • If we guard our kids against ALL strangers, it won’t matter whether they’re a first-time molester or one of these repeats. If we protect them from everyone and teach them safety, it won’t matter what color the bad guy’s license plate is.
Posted 2/28/2007 3:29 PM by ChrisRusso

Too bad most sex offenders aren’t strangers at all, but are usually in the victim’s family or their acquantinces.

    Read statistics, people.

  • Man.  You’re still on here?  And still posting several times a day…

I thought people would have moved on by now.

  • I think it’s a good idea….no one would ever borrow their car…..

    Candy

  • I dunno.

    I’d lean towards no though.

  • hmmm..leaning toward yes..but then a lot of the stuff people are saying makes sense

  • I am for anything that helps to keep people safe. SO, yes!

  • Maybe they should also be required to wear a scarlet letter too. Are we serious about this one?

  • This doesn’t help them to overcome their addiction/obsession/perversion. I think it’s terrible that people are sexually abusing anyone, but they need help and you are responsible for protecting yourself. Scare tactics don’t work.

I’m more on board with mandatory therapy/ jail time/ long-term parole (say 10 years- life?). Repeat offenders= life w/o parole.

And drunk drivers? Puh-lease. I much prefer them not to be able to start their car over a license plate where they will solely be police targets with a mark of humilliation.

  • What are they doing out anyway?

  • I don’t know, I guess it is a good idea but I am not sure how this would help police identify them easier. They are already going to have red flags all over their computers when they look up the license plate numbers in their computers. Why would you need to spend more money on some sort of light?

  • we should just.. tattoo their heads lol.

  • I think this is a little too far. I agree about the stigma. People can become registered sex offenders after a myriad possible situations, some of which don’t merit this kind of excessive punishiment. Maybe some sex offenders (such as repeat offenders) should have this, but maybe not all? Not sure. Gotta go-

  • wow what a redundant and poorly written comment, sorry about that.

  • How many times can Dan use the word stigma or a form of it in one day?

  • yes, kids need to be warned and as far as im concerned if you do something like that, you deserve to have those plates.  Destroying children is sick and they deserve what they get.

  • Stupid idea which is not surprising since it came from politicians.  Someone else may be driving the car who is NOT a sex offender, or the sex offender can take the plates off the car and put other plates on the car.  Duh!

How about branding them with some sort of symbol on their forehead to denote they are a sex offender?   Or perhaps have them wear a special bracelet which is locked on their wrist which denotes they are a sex offender for all to see.

  • I think that they should get a mandatory tattoo on their forehead stating, “My name is _______________ and I’m a sex offender”. It’d be much more efficient and you’d certainly take notice.

  • Most of the smarter sex offenders -Not that I would ever support sex offenders- probably wouldn’t be driving to their victim’s house so it wouldn’t matter if they had a fancy license plate or not

The plate would not really be warning anybody in th elong run, but instead it would create discrimination and worries through out the differenet communities. I beleive each judge should just create a reasonable sentence for each Offender individually depending on the circumstances.

  • Yes!!!! Brilliant idea.

  • What specifically IS a convicted sex offender?

What is the range of crimes that make someone a convicted sex offender?

I notice people don’t use the term “serial rapist” “child molester” “baby/grandmother incest fiend” or anything really disgusting. I am sure the someone convicted of those crimes would be a “convicted sex offender” but what ELSE is a convicted sex offender?

If I got arrested for giving a blowjob in a park, would I be a “convicted sex offender” I never gave a blowjob in a park though, just the streets of NYC out in the open as people walked by. Imagine a 19 year old recreating degradation porn not yet even filmed yet?

Then i would be a “convicted sex offender” and have a green license plate, in which case they could blow this law out their ass. Cant we just remove the penii of rapissts?

  • Oh My! We can’t step on these people’s rights or stigmatize them…regardless of what they’ve done to so many with their sexual predatory ways, those people haven’t had their rights, their safety or been stimatized by the acts of these people….Grrrrrrrrrr

  • Everyone deserves a shot to redeem themselves. Pedophilia is not a brutish behavior to be mercilessly punished, but a bad thing that should be understood and corrected.

  • sex offenders should be forced to wear fluorescent chastity belts where hired police officials shall remove any human waste that builds up within those belts once a year.

by doing this all sex offenders shall eventually die from ass and genital rashes caused by the excess buildup of FECAL MATTER!

  • hahaha, i am serious.

  • No. Some people get labelled as being a sex offender for doing the stupidest things that shouldn’t be illegal in the first place, and it’s not fair to them.

  • I like ChrisRusso’s comment.

  • Damn, that is HARSH.

  • I think it should be on a case by case basis.
I don’t think the 20 year old who went out with a 17year old should get one…or something like that…but definitley the guy who molested 4 little girls.

  • That’s too much. Perhaps a fluorescent sign on their front doors.

  • Maybe they should just make all the sex offenders uniks, or however you spell that.

  • But that would be rather sick. I don’t know!

How about super intensive psychological help.

  • that kind of ostracism disgusts me as much as being forced to put signs in their yards.

  • maybe for the first two years after jail time. after that, if they have a clean record, then let them try to assimilate themselves back into society.

  • Yes! Because most sexual abduction happen using vehicles.

  • Though on this note, as anyone heard about the 17 year old facing 10 years emprisonment for getting a bj from a 15 year old girl?? THAT IS TOOOOO SEVERE!!

  • “Too bad most sex offenders aren’t strangers at all, but are usually in the victim’s family or their acquantinces.”
Posted 2/28/2007 5:10 PM by bittersunday

Of course. But a fluorescent license plate won’t protect against family/acquaintances either.

I do agree with the people that were saying we need to further define “sex offender” here. It could refer to so many different things…

  • No, it’s just like making the Jews wear gold stars on their clothing. It could lead to unjust discrimination.

  • I am not really sure, some have brought up the fact that the SO wife or kids could be driving the car-that wouldn’t be right to tag them!

  • I don’t know… It seems like a good idea, but the sex offender might not be the only person who drives the car.

    IssyMae makes an excellent point.

  • I blatantly oppose this. If being on an internet site for all to see your face weren’t enough. What next? Brand a tattoo on their foreheads? And think about it, some offenders don’t even deserve to be lumped into the same category as rapists. If a 19 year old and a 17 year old get involved with each other and the 19 year old is found guilty in the crime of statutory rape, well, that guy doesn’t deserve to be branded as a rapist who violently takes women against their will by force or illicit drugs.

  • Okay, look. I know that sex offenders are risks for repeat offenses. But at the same time… I can’t help but think that, in an ideal world, after you’ve served your penalty for an offense there should be a possibility that you could change.

My thoughts exactly on all counts.

  • sex offender = the new jews

people inforcing fluorescent plates = new hitler.

Star of David….liscense plate that stands out.

Its not that extreme of a difference

  • This is just stupid, What’s the offender gonna, do jump out of their car while driving and rape you? Their names are posted on the internet for the world to see, and people make flyers for the whole neighborhood when one moves into the neighborhood. Not to mention all the protests people hold in front of said persons’ homes.
So I think they’ve been shamed enough, even though they shouldn’t be.

  • Yes.  I live in Ohio… have yet to see them.  And the party plates?  For the longest time I thought they were gov’t cars, not party plates lol.

  • I rarely look at people’s license plates.  Besides, are they only dangerous when they are in their cars?  It might make it a bit easier to track really honest sex offenders, but I don’t see it being the huge success people want it to be.  Offenders will just find a way around the system.

  • What colour license plates for politicians caught telling lies? Should the plate be coloured on such a politicians car only, or also on those cars in any motorised procession that he heads?

I believe that the Miranda Act places responsibility for a criminal act – if it is committed by a member of an organised criminal group – on all members of that group. In pursuit of this point: if the many convicted sex-offending priests are required to have these plates, will The Pope have to use one if he visits Ohio?

If you are a bishop who hasn’t committed such a sexual offense, but has covered up for one of his priests, does he get one of these plates too? (Miranda Act again, I guess)

If these plates look so cool that everyone wants one, do they have to commit a sexual offense to get one?

  • <TABLE class=blogbody cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=1 width=”100%” border=0>

Interesting point of view here. Yes..sex offenders are merely slapped on the hand…nothing compared to the damage they do to children and others who have scars the rest of their lives.

  • i like that idea a lot lol

  • Question:

Is the primary purpose of our judicial system to prevent further crimes, or to avenge past crimes?

  • No! They…what…

    Ugh.

Okay. Sex offenders go to jail and serve their sentence. They live with the shame of having done this, and they cannot live anywhere without the neighborhood knowing about it. Why go further to let all the drivers know? They aren’t going to jump into another car and violate you.
    Jeeeeez. Chill out.

  • Direshark has an excellent point.

  • Should convicted sex offenders be wandering the streets looking for their next prey? They should be in jail.

  • Why not? They deserve it.

  • on the car?  Like they are the only person that may ever drive the car?

  • “No, it’s just like making the Jews wear gold stars on their clothing. “

Jews are not like criminal sex offenders.

  • that a tuff one.

then we might have green for sex offenders, red for DWI, pink for road rage, yellow for speeding….ect

  • My cousin(whos a female) was dating a guy she believed to be 19.(she was 21 at the time)When in fact he was lying to her and was really 16. When his mom found out she brought charges against my cousin and now shes registered as a sex offender. Shes married now….and has a little girl. How fair is that to lump her in with that 40 yr old pervert who molested a bunch of little boys over a 20 yr span? Not very. So my answer would be No.

  • NO!  I can remember how I felt as a pre-teen when we had to go to the store and use food stamps.  Having to ride around in a car that was flashing green is just asking for trouble for the poor kids who have to go to school, let alone any adults who might have to be in the car.  Can you imagine all the pre-judging going on?!  And nobody will stop to ask, they will just automatically ASSUME.

  • drunk driving…possibly

    sex offender…no.

  • Why is it that we treat sexual offenders differently than other criminals? As far as I know, thieves and murderers are not forced to register in the towns in which they live or place signs in their lawns. Are they not dangerous, too? Why the double standard?

The biggest problem I have with all of this is that we seem to forget that the criminals are human beings. They become faceless objects of hate. While their acts are detestable, are they not made in God’s image? At least as a Christian, I cannot overlook that. I understand the purpose of our justice system, so I do not argue that they not be punished. I just want us to remember that they are humans, too.

  • No, that’s rediculous.  Even those poor 18/17 year old couples that get caught having sex are thrown into that category.  I think it’s unfair.  Everyone deserves a second chance and judgy people are the worst.  That’s like putting them in danger of death.

Drunk drivers makes more sense.  It could just be like “stay away from my car, I could be drunk.”  Not too much harm in that.  There aren’t that many people out there who specifically hate drunk drivers that might put them in danger.

  • No!  I’m calling the ACLU   Actually, I agree that maybe the drunk drivers should.  Well, then again No, I think it would create problems no matter what.

  • holy stigma Batman! I agree we should be able to know who they are but we needn’t parade their sins to the world for the rest of their lives! Certainly not to people who will never deal with them. I have no need to know that some guy who drives past me is a sex offender.

  • What is this, the fucking Scarlet Letter?

  • I don’t like sex offenders.

I don’t like the ones that go after kids, women, etc.

However, the guy that peed in public; the guy or girl that slept with their 15 yr old signif. other when they were 16, etc, etc, . (and the parents pressed charges.)

I think idk, it’s complicated issue involving a lot of factors.

  • worry about stigmatizing them? They earned that stigma on their own choices. It hink its good for families. People always worry about things like that.

  • Sex offenders *should* be stigmatized in my opinion. That’s kind of the entire point of the bright license plates isn’t it? And maybe people who don’t want to have that associated with them when they’re in their friends car just shouldn’t associate with sex offenders. Crazy I know, but it could work.

  • Everyone deserves a shot to redeem themselves. Pedophilia is not a brutish behavior to be mercilessly punished, but a bad thing that should be understood and corrected.
Posted 2/28/2007 6:22 PM by CrushTheseClasses

If baby raping isn’t a brutish behavior, could you please explain to me WHAT THE FUCK IS?????

I don’t think anyone who has raped a little kid deserves a second chance at anything.  Put them through the chipper shredder feet first, so they can enjoy the ride for as long as possible.

While removing their penises (if they are men) would be entertaining, I don’t think it would really help.  I read somewhere that making their penises unusable only makes them rape with objects instead.

  • they should not even have the right to drive and they should not be able to roam freely.  they do not even have the right to breathe!!

  • I have to ask this: are the drivers really THAT worried about a sex offender jumping into their car at the lights?

Use a better, more effective way of monitering them, but a licence plate change sounds unaffective.

    ’nuff said..

  • Horrible idea, instead mark their drivers liscense, say you buy a used car from a sex offender, I sure as hell wouldn’t want that shit on my car for even a day to get it removed.

  •  > All I can see the tags doing is making it harder for the driver of the vehicle to be able to work legally and wold mark the family too…. They just switch cars to the spouse registering it instead and all the money invested on plate is wasted…. How about a Tattoo on the forehead, kind of a scarlett letter-type thing? Wouldn’t be any worse than marking the car and make it easier to I.D. the perv… er sick person so they can recieve the proper counseling….

    Peace

  • Since they can’t be cured, they should stay in jail.

  • This is a a difficult one! While I completely understand the comments that these former sex offenders should be behind bars, some have served their sentence and are now trying to reconstruct their lives. Having a fluorescent plate stuck on their car only stigmatises the issue more. How are these people meant to rehabilitate to soceity and treat their illnes if everywhere they go they are ridiculed and reminded of their past mistakes??BUT on the other hand perhaps public shame and disgrace in the eyes of our peers is the only way to get through to repeat offenders……

  • Only repeats. Everyone makes mistakes, and as long as it was a one time thing, they don’t need the license plate. After that, it gets tacked on.

  • It would never work – there are too many flaws. In many places, sex offenders  are already supposed to be “registering” when they move into a neighborhood… Thats not working either. If  criminals are not able to be rehabilitated they ought to be kept in jail.

  • No, I think we should have them put large, red A’s on themselves, and force them to withdraw from society.

  • Yes, yes, yes! Why do people want to protect the privacy of sex offenders? They are not likely to ever be rehabilatated and the people they hurt are innocent but are most likely to affected by it their entire life. They take a away the sexual rights of children and other human beings, even animals. And yet, as a victim of some childhood molestation myself, I am stigmatized – I feel ashamed, like I did something wrong. So paint their homes neon green also – protect the innocent whose lives they destroy.

  • I am ambivalent.

If tracking them is really an issue, this could be convenient every now and then, even though there are some workarounds.

It’s more bureaucracy, which I’m not a fan of.

Regardless of whether the person truly changes or not, he or she still has to live with the consequences of his or her actions.  If people they meet don’t get past that, that’s too bad but understandable.

I’m not sure how I feel about family members or car poolers or whoever getting stigmatized by riding with the offender.  Wrongdoers aren’t the only ones who suffer from their actions.

In some ways this continues to punish people after they have technically paid their punishment.  I don’t think I’m wild about that.

I’m under the impression that a lot of people who do this sort of thing don’t change.  That being the case, I’m thinking I might enjoy the heads up a license plate could give me.

  • Remember kiddies, always check for a neon green license plate before getting in a car with a total stranger…

  • Next we can force Jews to identify themselves with a patch…oh wait thats has been done before….

  • For people who have gotten DUI’s, yes I agree with that. As far as sex offenders are concerned, no. I agree with having their license taken away for many years though. That sounds like a great idea. I think prison for the crime, and some sort of extensive therapy should be mandatory..

  • I’d have to say no, though it’s a good idea in some ways, just not others.

  • I think it goes way too far, it’s bullshit.

  • Yes! I think the bastards should have it tattooed on their forehead! Personally I think they should be shot, especially the ones who commit sex crimes against children.

  • I like the idea of having this for people with DUIs, but not the sex offenders.

  • I saw a similar story, except it proposed they be hot pink.

  • No – that was for drunk driving. Slow today.

  • ohio already has this law for convicted Drunk Drivers, the lic plates are Yellow with red letters, very noticable….and yes it’s a great idea imho…..everyone in ohio knows what that plate means when you have it on your car, it follows you everywhere, as it would with such a plate for sex offenders….it will be noticed and they will be shunned, i know when I see a DD plate, i just naturally have negative thoughts, and maybe shoot a dirty look their way, so i am more than sure it would have the same effect on those that had to drive a car with that plate on it everywhere…..the more shame and humiliation that is brought to them the better…

however, those plates are always a last resort, and allowed only for people who absolutely HAVE to have driving priveleges to get to work or some such thing, and it takes a lot to get there, the same should apply, there are different levels of “offense”, and i think that the plate should be depneding on the severity, the number and the chances that they have been given.,…..

  • Can someone explain to me why people are defending the rights of sexual predators? I think if you touch a child innappropriately, you should burn in the firey pits of anything that can cause you eternal torment. Of all the people commenting on how this is similar to ‘the Jews being ostracized”; Jewish people didn’t COMMIT A CRIME. On top of that, I wonder just how many of those people had been molested or raped as a child. I can vouch for the majority of the victims that those bastards need to ROT.

  •  I cant have a normal life myself and FYI I am not a pedophile or a repeat offender. It has been over 7 years since my crime
and while I wont excuse it nor do I ask others too. The simple truth is I lost my mind (I have A lonnng mental health history) and unfortunently I went in the direction of an SO and not say cuting myself or seing little green men. I spent over 3 years in the prison system
(raped and assulted) and I spent almost 3 in a State Hospital in an Sexoffender Treatment program, passed with flying colors.Did I meantion I was a juvinile offender? What I am saying is this is a VERY grey subject despite what people want to make of it. The persecution needs to stop! What about a black SO who is legaly segragated aginst because of the no SO in 1000 ft BS,because that is what it is. Or with this OHIO stuff, not to far till they make us wear little yellow six-pointed stars everywhere.Sound Familler? Don’t think that won’t happen in the US, Hello puritan Scarlet letters, or try telling that to the 100000s of Japenese-Americans and others rounded up and put in interment camps in the U.S. during WWII. Bottom line be warned this can and will happen to you too. The laws with SOs set the legal presedent.

like SOs national repeat offence rate 3.5% for Child Molesters
as per the 2003 Deparment of Justice report.
    WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!

  • I liek the jail and castration*spelling? but I’m not for green lights.

  • Drunk drivers, Yes.  Sex offenders, No.  Multiple offense sex offenders,  Maybe.  But, like ChrisRusso said, I’d like to believe change is possible and former molesters can become new people.  I like how he said “while we have to guard against the repeat offenders, we also have to allow for those that will change.”  These green license plates are sort of another method of stereotyping, and they allow no room for reform. People will view these and instantly think “bad person”. I think that is wrong.  I also agree with the false sense of security comment, because perhaps these will cause thought that those who don’t have one are, reversibly, “good people.”  Education is the best tool we have.  To be taught and truly learn about safety is the best thing we (along with our children/ younger siblings/ whatever) have going for us.

  • yes. and I also agree that drunk drivers should have them too.
