  • Rape and Justice

I was just reading a story that I have heard before about a woman who was raped over 22 years ago.

Her story became public when 20 years after the rape, the guy who raped her began to communicate with her.  He first wrote her telling her he was in AA and needed to make “amends to those he’d hurt” as long as he would not injure them further.

They communicated back and forth until she felt he wasn’t really taking responsibility for what he had done.  So she turned him in.  She mentioned that a few of her friends told her she should not press charges.  They told her she should just forgive.  She said that she had forgiven him.  But she wondered “Couldn’t she forgive and still want justice?  Couldn’t she forgive and still feel anger?”  Here is the link:  Link   (It is a long story but really interesting).

Can a person forgive and still feel anger?

  • God’s Silence

I ask this as a believer not as an unbeliever:

Why does it appear like God is silent when you need Him the most?

  • Longer School Days

Several schools across the country are experimenting with longer school days.  The average school meets for 6.5 hours a day.  But some schools are going with an 8 hour school day.

Apparently it has caused testing scores to go up.  One school is said to meet from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm plus a few hours on Saturday.  Here is the link:  Link

  • Dating Multiple People

I was just reading this letter to Prudence on slate.com:

    “Dear Prudie,
I am 24 years old and recently ended a three-year relationship. I was excited to get back into the dating world, and am of the opinion that a date is just that, and there’s no harm in dating several people since it’s unlikely things will progress further than a first date. I was wrong. I’ve been dating three men for the past month. There’s “Todd,” a divorcé with a young daughter; “Chris,” an engineer; and “Matt,” a graduate student. (I also recently met “Adam,” a police officer, but we’ll leave him out of this for now.) I’m a bit of a prude (pardon the expression), so nothing untoward has taken place with any of the three. However, when I met them I told each that I wasn’t in a relationship. Technically, I’m still not, but I feel like I’m lying when I avoid telling them I’m dating other people. I feel horrible saying something vague like, “I’m having dinner with a friend,” when one wants to make plans but I already have plans with one of the other two. I truly enjoy the company of each, and I’m not looking for another long-term relationship now. How do I—and should I—tell each that he’s not the only one? I’m under the assumption that each thinks he is, and I’m the only woman each of them is dating. Am I just enjoying my newfound freedom too much? Or am I overthinking this whole situation?

  • Merit Aid

I was reading an article about how the admissions policy for some colleges has become to competitive.  Some schools are talking about making changes.  One of the problems that they are concerned about is that scholarships are increasingly going to the highest performing students when it comes to SAT scores and grade point averages and not going to those with the greatest need.  Here is the link:  Link

There are those who think higher performing students should not be punished because their parents have more money.

Should scholarships be based on a student’s performance or on the needs of the student?

A news station caught rats on video at a KFC-Taco Bell in New York.

  • Spare the Shock, Spoil the Child

Thewashingtonpost.com is reporting that China is treating young people who spend too much time on the internet with shock treatments.
