  • 10:30

  • or 11

  • First!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • it SHOULD go to bed at 9
    but it won’t.

  • When you say so.

  • On a weekend 11, on a school night between 9&10.

  • When does he/she have to get up in the morning?

  • don’t worry about that he/she wont listen anyways!

  • 9-10

  • 9:00on weekdays, 12:00 on weekends.

  • 9:30- 10ish on school nights

  • 10:30 =) i don’t get why people are saying 9. that’s for like.. 10 year olds.. or 11.

    9 is waaaay to early.

  • 13 is 7th grade?

When I was in 6th grade neither me or my 3 years younger brother had a bedtime, we could stay up basically late as we wanted on a school night watching movies. . .but starting 7th grade my dad enforced a 10 o’clock bedtime which lasted until I turned 18! grrr

  • I was gonna say 10 or 11. But than I thought, Nah. Let’s be fear and not so anal.

    10:30!

  • school days: 9
    weekends: 10

  • 9pm

  • On school days. Weekends . . . I don’t prefer a bedtime on weekends.

  • when I hit Jr High bedtime was lifted and I could stay up as late as I wanted, provided I got up for school in time and did well in classes. Basicaly, I had to be willing to deal with the consequences of my actions.

  • *basically

  • however early that will allow them to be rested in the morning. let them go for a while, with no bedtime, and eventually they will get board with it and go to bed on time.

    dots

  • On school days, 10-10:30. On weekends, who needs a bedtime? =)

  • school nite 10 pm…. weekend 12pm

  • i’ve never had a bedtime.

  • When I got to 7th grade, my parents let me decide when to go to bed by myself. At first, I stayed up really late, but once I started feeling unbelievably tired in the morning, I started going to bed at night whenever I start feeling tired. I still do that; sometimes I go to bed at 10 and sometimes I go to bed at 9. I love sleep and I want as much as I can get!

But, if you’re trying to enforce a bedtime, try 9:30 or so.

  • 10:30 week nights  ? on Friday and 11-12 in the summer

  • 10 on school nights.

    11 on weekends.

Teenagers are supposed to get 9-10 hours of sleep every night. So… I suppose it really depends on what time they need to get up in the morning in order to go to school. *shrugs*

  • 10:00?  Sometimes exemptions for homework and such.

Later on weekends, also taking into account if friends are over.

  • 9pm? Are you kidding me? I’ve never been able to go to sleep at 9. Sure, you can tell them to take the TV off and the computer and watch them in bed at 9, but they probably wont be able to fall asleep until 11, or maybe just around 10. I think 11 is good enough. As long as they get up in the morning. If they have to be up at 6, then 10 should be good I guess, but if not, then 11 or 12. 9pm is just crazy. The news doesn’t even start until 10!

  • Mine goes to bed at 10pm

  • When I was 13 I stayed up till around 12-ish every night and that’s probably why I have such a screwed up body clock. So uh, I guess I would suggest 10 or 11 ish?

  • My parents made me be in bed at 9pm and I could stay up and read for an hour but no radio, tv or phone….just reading.  On the weekends I don’t know that we had a bedtime….we would camp out watching movies until we fell asleep but no phone after 9pm.

  • 10 is pretty reasonable I think, but it’s all up to you. I never argued with my dad about mine because I never got anywhere with it

  • Depends on the child I think. Every kid is different as far as how late they can handle staying up and how responsible they are with it, especially at 13. And weekends should be very lenient, since they are, of course weekends.

    -Jared

  • I think mine was 10:00 on weekdays and none on weekends. It depends on the kid-if they are responsible, then they might not need a bedtime. As long as they’re not falling asleep in class, I think that most 13 year olds are capable of deciding. And like others have said, if they have no bedtime, the novelty will wear off quickly, and they’ll start learning to have a little self-discipline. It’s good for them.

  • 10:30, and encourage him to watch the evening news. Maybe 11. Kinda depends on the kid and when they have to get up, how well they sleep, etc.

So do your kids read your site, or know much about it?

  • Well, mine’s 10:30 and I’m turning 16 in a couple months haha.

I think around 10-10:30 for a 13 year old is good.

  • 10.

  • bedtime?    How about curfew.

  • I’d say 9 or 10…

  • As late as they desire as long as they can function in the morning. They’ll learn when they have to go to bed in order to be able to wake up for school on their own, as long as you make them go to school regardless of how sleepy they are.

I didn’t have an enforced bedtime after elementary school.

  • 6:15!
    I don’t know
    11:00?

  • it was always nine for me… then I got my license… now it’s ten

  • Depends on when they get up. Assuming they get up about 6:30… 9:30. But most teens don’t start getting sleepy until 10-11ish. My solution? Push school back. Little kids get up early on their own, anyway, so they can have the earilier start time.

  • hey i’m 13, and its currently 9:15ish, and all parental units have been in bed for hours!!! i am not given a bedtime, and can stay up as late as i want, but i know that whenever they (parental units) want me up, i must get up, promply and with NO complaints. it is a nice system, i must admit…

  • when I hit Jr High bedtime was lifted and I could stay up as late as I wanted, provided I got up for school in time and did well in classes. Basicaly, I had to be willing to deal with the consequences of my actions.

    I agree with this one.
    ’nuff said…

  • 10:30 on a weekend, 9:30 on a school night

  • We have always been 2nd shift, homeschool people.  My house doesn’t shut down until after midnight.  I guess if they were going to public or private school, then maybe 10:00.  I had an aunt who always sent her children to bed at 8:00.  I disagreed with that.

  • 6:30… right after supper (dinner, however you say it).

  • 8 hours before they have to wake up to get ready for school.

  • 10:30 is good i think

  • whenever he passes out drunk.

  • between 9pm and 10pm
    is realistic

tho they say next to babies..
    teens need the most sleep..12hrs

i am not sure that is realistic

  • Whenever you say… :)

  • I think a good time is 9:30 on school nights, and between 10:30 and 11:30 on weekends.

I asked two of my friends. One said 9:00 on school nights and between 10:00 and 11:00 on weekends. The other said 10:00 on school nights and between 10:00 and 11:00 on weekends.

So I guess the consensus is 9-10 on weeknights, and 10-11:30 on weekends.

  • DAN FOR CRYING OUT LOUD THATS THE GOLED AGE LET THEM STAY UP AS LATE AS THEY WANT GOD!!!

6:oo AM 7:00 AM WHO CARES!!!!!

THEY WONT GO TO BED ANYWAY!!!!

    gosh

  • Haha, I haven’t had a set bedtime since I was about 11. As long as I kept my grades in excellent condition, my parents didn’t care.

  • It was 9:00 sharp for me.

Then again, now I’m 17, and stay up all night…

  • 8:30 on weeknights and 10:30 on weekends.

  • Once I became a teenager, I could go to bed anytime I wanted during the summer, but when school was on, I had to be in bed by 10:30, lights off and no reading.

  • 11 or 12. I was up till late late with a flashlight reading Stephen King books…

    Or jerking off.

But not TO the Stephen King books, thought that scene in IT turned my lil 7th grade mind on terribly…

  • get ready for bed by 9 in bed by 9:30

  • Err…. between 10-11…. Depends on how tired he normally is in the morning

  • Depends on when they have to get up. Maybe 10-ish, a little after.

  • can you tell who the parents are on this one?  Anybody who said 9 pm or earlier. Except that one guy who said right after dinner.  9 pm!!!

  • 9-10, but it also depends on the kid.

  • somewhere between 9 and 10

  • I’d say no later than 10:00 unless they watch the 10:00 news with you, then it’s off to bed! Weekends: no bedtime.

  • Oh geez, I never had a normal sleep schedule. I remember in 8th grade going to sleep at midnight, and in 9th grade, I slept whenever. I had terrible hours…like sleeping 4 hours, waking up at 2am to do work until 6am or so….

  • I have a question for you; when you make a grammatical, typographical, or spelling error, why do you not go back and edit your entry to correct the error?

  • please don’t listen to those that say 11pm is an okay bedtime for a 13-yr old! It isn’t!

I would say that bedtime is whenever you say it is. But when I was that age, I had to be in bed by 9 or 9:30pm. Just be sure that your kid gets at least nine hours of sleep a night.

  • Before tomorrow makes today yesterday.

  • Are you having a hard time getting your 13 year old to sleep? just seemed like a pretty specific question!

  • 10pm.. 9 would be better, but 13 years olds won’t listen anyways.

  • 10ish

mm…it helps curb emotional exhaustion common in the early teen years.

  • When they get tired. No one should have to set a bedtime for a 13 yr old, they ought to be old enough to know their responsibilities and get in bed at a reasonable hour. I did. But then again I wasnt a normal 13 yr old. hmmm…

  • My mother kind of let me go to bed whenever, but I was almost always in bed by 10 and asleep by 11. But until I was 13, I increased my bedtime by the hour. Until I was 6, I went to bed at 7, then until I was 10 it was around 8 or 8:30, then 9:30-ish when I was 11, and 10 when I was 12. But by then, I knew when I was tired anyway.

  • But it depends on the kid, too. Some are natural night owls and won’t go to bed before 10 (like me, nowadays) whereas some will just naturally turn in around 9 (like my 15 year old brother). I understand trying to get a 13 year old to bed at a good time, but don’t try and mess up their natural time to sleep.

  • I’m not sure what bedtime I had. I don’t think I had one.  If I had to choose one, I would say 10 on weekdays and 11 on weekends.

  • We didn’t have a specific bed time, but I would say around 10 is the standard. It’s easy to get used to staying up late, and they are far better just not getting into the habit.

  • if you give the teen this small freedom it will go a long way…and besides teens like sleep, they’ll figure out what they need.  although a few have mentioned a keeping good grades type thing, that sounds like it would be a good idea.  mention it when the bedtime thing is mentioned but then let it be until they get the next term report so again they feel freedom.  when i was a that age small things like that seemed like nice concessions.

  • 11pm, midnight-1am weekend.

  • haha, I like one of Xcholo4u’s answer “Whenever you say so.”

I’d say 10 o’clock they better have their bum in bed & lights out.

  • Well, I am 13. I go to bed at about 10:30PM, but if I am sleep deprived I go to bed at 9:00PM. I can’t go to sleep before 9:00PM.

Please, God, don’t tell me you’re setting a bedtime for a 13 year old! Well, if you do… Lift it on the weekend…

  • THE SHOULD NEVER WAKE UP

  • When do they have to get up? Count 8 & 1/2 hours back. The 1/2 is because there is no way a 13 year old will hit the bed & fall directly asleep.

  • 10:00 on school nights; 11:00 on weekends.

  • 10-11pm.

  • when the homework’s done

  • from the time I was ten on up to sixteen I had a bedtime curfew where I was supposed to be in bed by a certain hour, and the hour was changed at ten from like 9 pm to ten pm when I was 12…and so on until when I was sixteen my dad wanted me home by ten, and I could go to bed whenever. I always stayed up and read in bed…but they didn’t care, they just didn’t want me out of my room…wonder why..lol.

9-10 on school nights…and like 11 on weekends. don’t screw up their sleep too much.

  • They are old enough to begin to understand that time is arbitrary and its definition henceforth is whatever they determine.  Everyone needs a different amount of sleep according to their body styles and eating patterns etc, they have to find it out for themselves, if you make them follow “whatever you say” then they will never have the capability to find things out on their own and will constantly be a follower.  Even if they rebel against strict rules it will be according to the standards that some other peer has set.  They have to be able to learn how to run their own lives under a supervised setting if you ever want them to begin to think for themselves and exercise an inkling of free will.  It will make them less rebellious, more understanding and more open minded to everything else in the environment if they are forced to understand why the rules are set, rather than having the rules set for them.

13 is also around the age when their circadium rythm will begin to shift towards becoming more night dependent, it is not natural for young adults to sleep at night.  It is against their natural cycle and can not be defined for them.  Even if they choose not to sleep the abilities that they will gain from learning how to function on less sleep could help them in later parts of life.

  • I stayed up until 2 when I was 13, and I turned out perfectly normal….

  • Whenever they feel like going to bed….

    Candy

  • Depends on what time the bars close.

  • Hmm. I’m trying to think back when I was thirteen.

I’m going to go ahead and say 10:30 is a pretty good time on week days, maybe 11 on weekends.

  • Being a 13 year old, I usually try to get to sleep by 11 on most nights, and 12:30 during the summer. An early bedtime for me is 10.

But yeah, I agree with SavingAsher that by this point you should be able to choose your bedtime, and deal with the resulting consequences.

  • Depends on what time he or she needs to get up in the morning.  My 14 year old goes to bed at 9:30.  She wakes up at 6:30.

  • I think you also need to factor in the time they need to get up in the morning — the earlier the rise, the earlier the bed time.

  • That totally depends on the parent. When I was 13 my school night bed time was 9:30, though I could usually stretch that to 10 or so. I’d say probalby right around 10.

  • 9 on school nights.. 11 weekends.

  • <TABLE id=HB_Mail_Container height=”100%” cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width=”100%” border=0 UNSELECTABLE=”on”>
    <TBODY>
    <TR height=”100%” UNSELECTABLE=”on” width=”100%”>
<TD id=HB_Focus_Element vAlign=top width=”100%” background=”" height=250 UNSELECTABLE=”off”>Ask him to choose between qo and 10:30 pm.  It depends when school starts for him or him.
    <TR UNSELECTABLE=”on” hb_tag=”1″>
    <TD style=”FONT-SIZE: 1pt” height=1 UNSELECTABLE=”on”>

  • It would depend largely on what time they have to get up in the morning.

  • i never had a bedtime… i was a real sleep deprived kid, but enjoyed every minute of it :)

but err… i suppose 10 or 11 would be a reasonable time for a 13 year old to be in bed for a 7 am wake up for school…

  • Depends on the child…and when they have to be in school the next day.

  • Yeah, depends on when he/she needs to wake up and if it’s a school night.  Mine at that age was 9, and I think that’s about what it should be generally.

  • 9:30-10, but it actually depends if the child will get enough rest with the amount he/she’s getting or not. It may differ with children.

  • 9 on weekdays, 11 on weekends.

  • im 13 and i go to bed around 9:30.

  • 9 or 10pm? Depends on what time they have to get up in the morning, and how much sleep they need to function well (it can vary from person to person).

  • I think it might depend on what the nightly routine is. For example you might stay up and watch Lost together on Wednesday nights, then discuss it later or something like that. Who knows. My son is only 14 months.

  • My parents made me go to bed at 9, and I always thought it was too early.  I think 10 is appropriate.

  • 10PM
    <3Always,
    Nary

  • depends on the kid. But I’d guess 11?

  • 10ish….except on weekends.  My middle son is a night owl like me, though, he has always liked to stay up later even on school nights.  And no, he’s not a morning person, either.

  • I would say about 11.

I don’t know, I never had a bedtime, I just went to sleep whenever I felt like it.

  • 13 years old? 9:30 and that last until they are 16. At 16 10 to 10:30.. ( of course this on the weekdays. On  the weekends I let my kids stay up as long as they want,Same for summer.

If my kids don’t go to bed a normal time.. they do not get thier schoolwork or homework done. They are crabby and hard to live with!

  • I was homeschooled at 13 and so I didn’t have a bed time! hehehehe

  • 11.00 pm (23h00) on a school night and 1.00 am (01h00) on a friday. If he/she is going to be in a theatrical performance; 10.00 pm (22h00).

  • Well, science says that the healthiest amount of sleep for a person is about 9 hours each night. So, I’d just figure that to what time he/she has to go to school on weekdays and make that the bedtime (i.e. they wake up for school at 6:00, bet time will be at 9:00)

  • I usually went to bed between 9:30 and 10.

  • i’m actually 13 [and in 8th grade, but i'm almost a year younger than most kids my age] and i sleep around 12. i know thats a little later than average, but average at least in my school would be around 11.

  • 9? Sounds good to me. Or maybe 9:30. Depends on how well s/he gets up in the morning.

  • My son is 13 and his bed time is 11pm, unless it’s a weekend, because on weekends, we don’t care.

  • as a 13 year old (in the 8th grade, by the way), i get PLENTY of homework. sometimes, teachers just expect you to get things done. but when you have after school activities and volunteer work to do, sometimes you just need to pull an all-nighter every once in a while.

but even without those big projects, I still need to stay up pretty late.

i guess it depends on the maturity, homework amounts, and parents of the kid.

  • Any 13 year old would resent their parents immensely for enforcing a bedtime.  I say let them stay up as late as they want unless they start doing badly in school.  God, still having a bedtime at 13.  That would be really embarassing.

  • Dunno. 10:30-11 that’s usually when I go to bed

  • They need 8-9 hours of sleep to function at full capacity. Factor in what time they start school, and what time they need to be up to get to school on time, you have your answer. School starts at 8:15am, no later than 10:30. Being an adult who is working, 8 hour os sleep would be fabulous

  • When I was 13 I went to bed at 10:00 or so. But it really depends on what time they get up.

  • i would say it depends on what time they have to get up for school in the morning. . .my mom says when you’re still growing you need 9-10 hours.  i wish i could get that much :]

i’m sixteen and lucky if i get 6 hours. . .but that is because i have too much homework and do too many sports :]

  • Ahh…it SHOULD be around 10, I think.
But, um…well, being a 13-year-old myself, I dunno. On a really late night I might go to bed ’round 3…

  • My mom requires me to sleep early everyday. 9 hrs is enough.

  • I think eleven on weekdays, and no bedtime on weekends (except for Sunday).

  • urgh im 13 an mine is 9:30 i HATE it no1 else evn has a bed time

  • the time that the child goes to bed is when bedtime is, and the most effective time is the one they choose. if naturally they go to bed at midnight, then let them, and make certain that they still do everything they need to. Eventually they will find the appropriate time for their needs and desires and they will regulate themselves. That is a great time to start teaching them direct responsibility for action if you haven’t done so already.

  • I’m fourteen years old and my dad requires that on weeknights I go to bed before midnight and on the weekends he doesn’t care when I go to bed.

  • 11 on school days [they should be sent to their room] .. you cant makes a 13 year old go to sleep. on weekends.. whenever.

  • NONE. they should be able to decide for themselves.

  • “however early that will allow them to be rested in the morning. let them go for a while, with no bedtime, and eventually they will get board with it and go to bed on time.

    dots”

Hah, yeah right. I go to bed sometimes at 1 or 2. I get up at 6. (Sometimes this is because of school work. However, I still stay up as late as I want).

  • Oh, I’m 17, by the way. I think my bedtime limit ended after elementary school.

  • I don’t know really. When I was 13 I was given the responsibility of going to bed when I wanted to, as long as I made sure to get up on time for school.

  • Hm.. 13? I’d say 9:30-10:00. On Friday and Saturday nights I’d recommend sleeping before 1 AM but as long as they get to bed at 9:30 or 10:00 on Sunday night it doesn’t matter.
