Civil War
Today is the 142nd anniversary of the surrender of Gen. Robert E. Lee to the Union. The surrender is said to have ended the Civil War. In the last 20 years, these battles have been re-enacted. They are played out on a battle field. Here is the link: Link
If we broke out in Civil War again today, do you think the North or the South would win?

i think we were using the predetermined north & south. such as what it was when the civil war first broke out.
but it’s true, in war, everyone loses.

Depends on what we’re fighting for…but I’d have to say the North, seeing as how that’s where I’m from and all.
I don’t think it would be at all divided the same.
I guess I’d root for the North, being from NY. South has more manpower and more militancy going for it, but I think the North would find a way to win again.
Thank goodness this won’t happen though! We are all one nation, North and South, and we have only ONE flag - Old Glory!

i have to disagree with that factor, well the “better” part.
north–DUH.
It depends on which side Hollywood supports because movie stars are so much smarter than the rest of us.

Consider also the fact that many states that are considered the West today were “free” states, and thus with the North.
The south…. Most of the current armed forces are from the South (at least from what I’ve seen…). Not to mention, the reason the south lost the first time was economic, not military, strength. Now, the south has a much stronger economy and could better support a war effort…
Before everyone goes crazy, I’m not advocating a second succession or anything… I’ve just be part of a LONG discussion on the subject in a military history class…
The North. They have more people, more heavy industry and more nuclear weapons but I think the South would give them a good run for their money, just like the first time around.

but the south is a lot more unified under the holy bible… so you never know. god is probably on their side.
I think the South would win because there are much more people, a great number of privately owned weapons, and I think most of our military bases are in the South now… but I don’t know any of these things for certain.

south. they should have won in the first civil war anyway. not morally, but they had more troops, and more supplies, and it didnt make sense that the north won. i dont like the possibility of even considering it though because the civil war was a horrible thing. brothers killed eachother. our nation was destroyed.

South. The north does not have what it takes to win a war; they are too soft.
In high school I was taught that only yankees refer to it as the Civil War though. They said it is more correctly refered to as the War between the States or the War of Northern Agression.
I’ve seen too common a trend among Southerners–a tonne of them are still all damn bitter about the Civil War. Dear god, suck it up. You lost. Get the fuck over it.

I don’t know that people would be able to rise together as they did back then… we’d probably just end up nuking everyone because that’d be the fastest, easiest way to “take care of the problem.” Ever seen Ebaumsworld “End of the world”? I agree with that. And add all those illegal immigrants and I’d definitely say the South would, unfortunately, have a great chance. However, depending on what the war was about, my support would be split. Live in the South, love the North. Plus, the South deserved to lose the Civil War. The fact that people are still upset about it is quite bothersome.
The Red States would win. There’re more of us. The South lost the war because of ecomonic disadvantages. While the South still isn’t as developed as the former North, there are strongly industrialized areas in the South. It would be a much fairer fight, anyway. I think we could win.
As a Southerner, I’m not upset about the Civil War’s outcome. It happened over 140 years ago, it’s time to let it be in the past. I’m not cool with the systematic removal of Southern culture and history. Especially the cultural stigma against the confederate flag. I don’t view it as racist. Especially since the Civil War was not fought over slavery, as many kids are taught. The flag is a historical item that Southerners share in common.

Then again, with private companies the way they are, industrial advantages may not mean that much. I could easily see detroit selling vehicles to the south even tho they’re in the north.

First off, civil war didn’t break out in 1861. The north went to war with the south for seceding. How grand.
Second of all, professional athletes wouldn’t fight the war. However, consider where most of the military bases and such are. Also consider how easy it’d be to cripple large metropolitan areas of the north. Furthermore, when you consider the cutting off of food supplies and such, the north would collapse as soon as Food Lion sold its last loaf of bread.
For those who think no one wins in war, I think the Jews would beg to differ (but maybe I’m being presumptuous in speaking for them).

umm… if stonewall jackson was resurected… the south.
I think the south would win, they have all the space shuttles and could find a way to use weapons in space, they have oil, they have a lot of southern bases as far as military goes too.

I’d hope it was the south, but it’d probably be the north. Assuming they were fighting about the independence of states again. (I was born in the south and moved up north)

I think it would probably depend though who got a hold of what military bases and what kind of weaponry they had behind them.
North. But I certainy hope that doesn’t happen! More people died in the Civil War than any other war America has been in.

It will not matter who wins as long as you have enough food in your home to feed plenty of people who will be knocking on your door because they have been ‘outsourced’ like everyone else. I think India would win…oops they already have.

I’d say… if West Virginia is still considered a Northern State as it was during the Civil War (despite the number of Confederate Flag wielding rednecks we have in the state) that the North would probably come out on top again.
Of course we could just guestimate military power based on the current enlistment rates and military facilities from each state that comprised the CSA and the US during the Civil War… but I’m far to lazy at the moment to do so.
I seriously doubt it would break up along north and south, it would most likely break down along party lines. In the party break down the republicans would probably win because the democrats would sit there trying to ask us not to shoot rather than picking up a gun and shooting back.
Given your break down I would have to say the south because they have more ports and the aviation industry is centered in the south. Though many of the bombers are stationed in the north. It would be a very tightly fought battle that would go on even longer than the original. The South also has more ports to bring in goods from other countries. Plus in my experiences I have sensed a greater fighting spirit in the south than in the north.

Southerners are so self obsessed over losing the first time around, they don’t realize the real enemies are all up northeast of Philadelphia.
Seriously, if we ever were to divide regionally, it would be northeast vs. the rest of us.

A lot of the advantages of the North during the Civil War are no longer as relevant today. A lot of those things are more equal nowadays, so I’d say it would pretty much be up to the specifics of the first few battles. And what it means to “win.” I don’t either side is capable of conquering the other side assuming everyone fought for their home state.
We’d probably just end up a splintered nation with armed borders, if it came to war.

Well, since the North was the original US Gov, and the South would be a breakaway one, the North would win out, because we’d have more military power. War dynamics are so much more different these days… the North could just intimidate the South into surrender with threats of nukes….

In a flash, we would take over Oklahoma (Damn OU), Lousiana and parts of Arkansas and New Mexico, forming the Republic of Texas (Again). Nobody messes with fucking Texas!

True, wasn’t it made so that Southerners would stop shooting each other because their first flag looked too much like the Union flag? The Civil War was primarily fought over the South losing political power in National Government. That’s true, it’s not taught exactly like that. Everyone’s like “Oh, slavery, south bad, north good”

I don’t think it would be the North against the South. It would be the East and West Coasts against middle America. I don’t know who would win, but I know who I’m rooting for. (grin)

I use to date a guy who was a re-enactor….He probably would say the south would win.
I’ve grown up in the south for most of my life and I have always been a huge fan of the north. But now that I actually live in the North, I do miss the ‘Dirty Dirty.’ haha But I think the north would win–the people in the south are just too nice and hospitable.
