  • Immigration

As I mentioned in my photoblog earlier, all across the country immigrants and others took their message to the street today in calling on Congress to give illegal immigrants a “path to citizenship.”

In my photoblog, someone left the following comment:

Man, people should be able to live wherever they want. How can you own the land?

Is it fair to make it so difficult for others to come here when our ancestors were able to come here so freely?

  • ohhhh myyyyy gawwwwwwd!
    somebody pinch me.
did i just get first on dans?!

  • oh. and my real answer is no, it is not.

  • Yes.  When we came here so freely there were no such thing as backpack bombs.

  • It is our land and we have the right to protect it ad protect the rights of it’s citizens ….

  • Dude, you need to come to the midwest before you say “Is it fair to make it so difficult for others to come here”. Judging simply by the amount of illegal immigrants that are here it seems to me that it’s not really that difficult to come here.

  • indeed.
and I wanted to comment to your opinion, to wit that it would be easy to “catch all the illegals” at the rallies: yeah, except that plenty of people with citizenship attend those rallies, too.

  • people should be able to live where they want. america is supposed to be a free and safe country to live in. we should live by our word.

  • Even our ancestors obeyed the law and filed for papers and citizenship.  Today the process is “easy” and it only takes 7 years, considering it used to take 14.

  • Once, a bunch of kids from my school went out to protest the state of immigration laws in the US. The kids from the middle school down the dtreet came to join them. Then, when the principal went out to punish them, she decided instead to ask them why they were out there. 75% didn’t even know, they were just out there to have an excuse to ditch school.

  • No, in the grand scheme of things it is not fair. The first immigrants came over and killed off the Indians (sound a little terroristic to some of you who just love bringing up the terrorist thing?) while laying claim to the land. But that’s now done. They were the victors, and the victors write the history. And the laws.

And I’ll just repost what I said on the original pic.

“Calling them “illegals” dehumanizes them. They are not caricatures grinning evilly as they creep over the border just to flout our laws. They are people looking for better opportunities and a better future. They come here to escape grinding poverty and a lack of being able to earn enough to cover basic necessities. As it stands, immigration is a long, expensive, and labrynthine process, designed to minimize immigration from certain countries, which none but the least needy can afford to go through.

But that doesn’t mean I condone illegal immigration. I think that Latin American countries should be fixing their own systems so that their people do not feel so compelled to flee. Something is really broken in those systems if they cannot provide for the poorest of their own citizens. Pressure should not just be placed on the poor and needy who flee Mexico (and other countries) but on the corrupt, greedy and lazy governments that create a situation where the poorest find it necessary to run.”

  • Our/your ancestors didn’t come here for free. The natives didn’t say ‘Well hey white man! How’bout having this plot of land me and my family have been living off of for generations! Well heck ya you can just have it!!!”

On a side note. Not all Native Americans were so passive either. Many stole land from other tribes. Back and forth.

  • I have no problem with people coming over here to live and get away from bad situations in their own countries, however I do have a problem with people that come over here to get jobs and then send the money back to their families in the other country.  Either bring them all over or stay there and find a job.  And to anyone who looks down upon me for saying this: my parents are immigrants from Cuba who left to have a better life here, so believe me, this is not a racist mindset, it’s what I believe to be right.  It angers me that so many people come over here, take jobs simply so they can send the money to a different economy, and then have the audacity to bash this country.

  • No.

But that doesn’t mean it’s wrong.

  • No, cuz they taking over our jobs where we were rightful here in the first place.. They just want to rob our lives thru the illegal way.. Go back in line and go thru the proper process to get into our country… Do it right way in the first place instead of short cuts..

  • YES!

I bet a lot of immigrants are a lot more hardworking than the American slobs who sit on their asses and watch American Idol all day.

  • Yes, it is fair to make it more difficult. The circumstances in this country today are very different from those say 100 years ago. It’s not the same debate.

  • No.  I’ve never thought it as fair. . .

It’s not a “free country” when we make laws as to WHO can COME

  • Again, there is no clear-cut answer for your question. It’s, for example, not fair–as “our” ancestors (as it is not mine) have planned the infrastructures and built them and got this country into world-class shape–for illegal immigrants to come and take advantage of the very things they did not have to work for. On the other hand, it is the very people who came to this country and worked their butts off who has built the country, much like the illegal aliens today; they are simply irreplaceable as a whole. An extreme case of the cause for former would be the fear for similar relationship between the immigrants during the 17th and 18th century who settled on American soil while Native Americans first helped them, then were forced to flee (among the most famous cases, Trail of Tears); and extreme case for the cause of latter would be the Eastern European and Irish immigrants who went on to work in dangerous conditions during the Gilded Age.
The causes of this sentiment from the people are numerous, as are possible results (global communism? Fall of Rome? Possibilities are endless). Defending the position and logically sticking with one of the choices is one thing, saying that it is “not fair” is another.

  • They should be allowed to come. However we do have laws and immigrants should be required to follow those laws just like the rest of us. Illegal immigrants are by the very definition were not following our laws when they came to the US and therefore should not be allowed to citizenship. We have a right to restrict citizenship to only those who we deem fit to have it and I do not deem people who are lacking respect for us as a country to be worthy of citizenship.

  • No, its not like they were all automatically accepted either…. they had to go through Ellis Island, were sent back if they had diseases etc. and had to become citizens…our country has to have control of OUR borders of how is it OUR country?

  • it is, we are becoming everything our forefathers feared. capitalism is going to far as well.

  • The Europeans did not come over to North America “freely” in the least.

We forget that the people in North, Central, and South America were here A LONG TIME before white people.  This IS THEIR LAND and was for millenia.  White people just stole it from them, and now we’re bitching about how we can’t allow them to cross the borders?  Man, what bullshit.

  • Who said life was fair?

  • Or our government for that matter?

  • lol it’s a little more complicated than that

  • We have a right to restrict citizenship to only those who we deem fit to have it and I do not deem people who are lacking respect for us as a country to be worthy of citizenship. mrcolorful

    I agree!

  • No. I’ve never thought it as fair. . .

It’s not a “free country” when we make laws as to WHO can COME-TransexualTwat

“free” doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want.

  • No, but since when have we as a country been concerned about fairness to others?

  • Shit, I meant no. My mistake.

  • No. It is racism and greed that keeps people from wanting emigrants from Mexico to come here. Besides, a good part of our country is land that we took from Mexico, so forgive me if I think that people who don’t want Mexican-Americans to live in the areas we took from Mexico are stupid.

  • Yes! For a good reason.

  • This is so freaking ridiculous. I am not even gonna get started.  Look at what happend to other countries that didn’t protect their borders and you will figure out what kind of a mess we are in.

Don’t be stupid people we should have fixed this problem 20 yrs ago.

  • Honestly…? There isn’t as much room as there was when our ancestors made the trip. The illegals are one to two hundred years late for the land rush.

  • OOH!! OOH!!

I know how to solve the problem immediately and indefinitely!!

Get rid of the damn immigration quotas.

Right now, we have quotas on the number of immigrants from different countries who can get in. Get rid of them, and people will come here legally. Duh?

OR maybe we could help the countries supplying the immigrants? So that they aren’t so desperate to get here.

  • That’s not to say that I’m totally unsympathetic. I think it’d be great if everyone could come here and make a better life for themselves–I’m just saying that there’s no realistic way to make it easy for everyone.

  • Rajani: there’s a reason there are immigration quotas. If they weren’t in place, America would be full to bursting with a poor community we couldn’t possibly support. We can’t even support our own homeless community–how are we supposed to deal with all the others?

  • of course not. but THIS IS AMERICA. land of hypocrisy :)

  • The fact is that without illegal immigrants, who would be doing all the dirty work for less than minimum wage, living in the poorest neighborhoods, and being bashed by everybody?

Make them citizens, and they might *gasp* try to have the rights that the rest of us take for granted.

  • No it is not fair. I read some of the above replies and some people answered with “No” and then proceeded to answer that illegal immigrants should be given such a hard time to get their citizenship. Some people should read the question before writing their answers. I even read one that said “ …They just want to rob our lives thru the illegal way.. Go back in line and go thru the proper process to get into our country…” I’m an immigrant and to clarify the situation, we don’t want to rob people of their jobs; we take the lowest jobs most citizens dismiss as too ‘deameaning’. We work hard and appreciate our schooling and the opportunities this great country offers. We also learn how to write english properly unlike some other native citizens…. I won’t mention names…

  • to all the job stealers……tell me one job that an illegal immigrant has STOLEN?

  • well if they are illegal aleins than no. they should becomeamerican citiznes first!!! so yeah my answer is hell no!!!!

  • “Freely”

Anyone who says that is so ignorant. My ancestors can as an indentured servant (slave) fought the natives, them married one, fought in the revolution, then the civil war and every war since. Don’t ever say we had it so easy that we came so freely. No one has it easy and every culture has a right to protect itself. If you think 300 million people is a lot, let everyone come who wants to come. It will be a billion people soon enough, and it will no longer be America.

  • And please drop the it was there land bs. Some of my ancestors were fighting and killing the natives of the south long before Europeans arrived. The apaches would be a little pissed off to hear people say this was once part of Mexico. Sorry it never was

  • This land is not yours or mine to own.

  • yes,it’s definitely fair. because now we have laws in place, and a government, and we should have a national language(English),and in order for there to be order and not anarchy, everyone has to follow the law. if we’re going to be lenient on illegal aliens, and let them bypass the law, then where is the reason for anyone else to adhere to any other laws?

    gina

  • i don’t have a good answer to that question,

but today i was driving in downtown milwaukee and came accross hundreds of protesters

and, i dunno, coldplay’s “don’t panic” was playing and the sun was shining and i just thought it was a beautiful thing

  • LightningRichy is a hippy. Yes, you can own land. You can own land LIKE CRAZY.

The government should be able to control the flow of immigrants. It is absurd to believe that illegal immigrants are legal. If you have a problem with the current laws, replace them, don’t do away with the system in favor of anarchy. When the United States of America floundered under the Articles of Confederation, we did not end our little experiment in life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The Constitution was drafted and, by God, it worked pretty damn well.

ATTENTION BRAINLESS PARTY-LINERS: ILLEGAL MEANS ILLEGAL, LAND CAN BE OWNED, GET A BRAIN

  • um no it’s not fair,in reality this isn’t even our land because we stole it and pushed out the indians…gah man, america is just full of it and i’m embarassed to say that i live here!

  • I’d be more sympathetic if they weren’t breaking the law to get into our country. And someone is torn up about how the land was acquired or what laws govern it – LEAVE. Or enter legally, vote, and change the rules. No it’s not fair but yes it’s right.

  • Hm… Let’s see…

Whose land is it, anyways? If people traveled here from the bridge between Northeast Asia and modern-day Alaska, wouldn’t it mean that someone had to pass through (and settle) “our” land to get to South America?

    Rhetorical question. It’s nobody’s land.

Whoever put a little fence around a patch of dirt and claimed “This is Mine!” created one of the many problems we face to day: The idea of ownership.

  • no, My ancestors went through Ellis Island, and those who didnt came in LEGALLY. So it’s perfectly politically correct and fair to have recent immigrants go through a process to get citizenship.

  • I think it’s fair. Everyone wants to be in America and for security reasons, access has become difficult. So all the factors need to be considered.

  • My suggestion for the immigration problem? Help fix the countries where these people are coming from. Make them better. Our government is so ready to help out in the Middle East, but we will ignore issues in our own hemisphere?

And before anyone else starts ripping about how tough immigrants have it, I’m an immigrant, I came here from Ireland when I was ten. It’s not nearly as difficult as people make it out to be.

  • “Even our ancestors obeyed the law and filed for papers and citizenship. Today the process is “easy” and it only takes 7 years, considering it used to take 14.”

Except in reality our ancestors butchered and herded the Native Americans around like cattle before ultimately conquering them.

  • Everyone here who is making a great and virtuous noise about the rule of law should take into careful consideration that early America was cultivated by barbarous imperialism and intolerance of “savages”.

  • So idealistic, the first page of commenters who think the borders should be open.

This is a complicated issue! You work, you pay taxes, your taxes pay for services provided to people who…

    work? And pay taxes too?

Okay, let’s be nice. People who are in a worse position that you or I can elevate themselves, and when they do, the society as a whole grows stronger.

But you can’t have open borders. Is there a “make yourself welcome” sign hanging on your ass?

    So to answer your question…

Yes, it is fair. Our ancestors had ancestors, and things were quite different between 200 and 600 and 2000 years ago.

    Get educated or shut up.

Oh, I gotta be quiet now…

    :P

  • Sure it is. If our ancestors did people wrong, that’s not our fault. Fact is, we’re here, and we’re not to blame: the people that are, and the peopel that were wronged, are dead. If peopel do us wrong, we have right to defend our own.

  • Well, most of the mid-west to the west coast was really pretty uninhabited. There were no border lines so half the time you didn’t know you were crossing countries until you came to the first town (Except Texas and the Rio Grande, can’t miss that :p). Except now there’s a bunch of paranoid/racist Americans living there. Go figure.

Besides, I thought they did have a “Pathway to Citizenship”? There’s a whole system, isn’t there? Of course they don’t like it because one of the requirements is knowing English. “No saben nada!”

  • absolutely not. i love bittersunday’s answer.

  • I just don’t want my grandchildren to be short, brown, and have the facial features of a chimpanzee with Down syndrome. And I totally agree with The Trun. Fuck them natives.

  • RaVnr, is there anything that isn’t a pet cause of yours. Get a Job, move to a 3rd world country, hell, do something, anything

  • immigration needs to be re-examined without a doubt however i don’t think that making it easier is really the solution.  allowing immigration based on resources would be more viable, resources and job availablity.  murky problem all around becuase generally aspects of immigration involve differences definition.  legal immigration i’m all for, illegal not so for.  telling people who lived here first they are banned i do have a problem with but again gets murky.  i don’t really have a defined answer to this one although i do support some sort of overarching authority and not a laissez-faire approach to land posession.

  • It’s not the Wild West anymore where people just set up camp where ever they want.

Yes, you can own land.  Anyone who says you can’t should consider whether they would like some to be sitting in their living room tonight when they come home.  If you can’t own land, then that is the end result.  Anyone can choose to be in the same place you are…scoot over.

We have a system of government supported by the taxes of the citizens which pays for the roads, police, judicial system and a multitude of other things that make this a place where people want to live.  It is vital that we have a system of entry & citizenship.  And … No, I don’t want criminals from other countries coming here.

  • Yes it is fair!….if they want to come over hear so bad they need to do it legally, instead of coming across the border…..plus when we came over no one had to worry about terrorist trying to attack us. I say if u come across the border and didn’t do it legally then you should get sent back to where u came from.

  • Of course its unfair.Anyone with 2 functioning half brains can see that.

  • As much as I hate the idea of illegal immigration and the actions of so many of them, I have to remember that many in our history came here “illegally” and slipped through the holes of restriction.  It just sucks that the actions of my past brethren have now caught up to me and my generation and we’re paying for their manueuvers.

  • HAHAHA. oh my god. I’m so freaking sick of the illegal immigrants around here. I grew up in southern California, and we lived on a back road by the freeway and they’d take that route instead of the fwy to miss the border patrol. We’d sit upstairs and once or twice a DAY see truck loads of illegals being snuck in. It was bad.

It doesn’t matter what rights they want to have, it’s not fair to citizens that they can just come in and be entitled to rights because they happened to succeed in hopping the fence. If they wanted rights as americans in the first place, they would have taken the proper steps in becoming a citizen. There’s richer land in Mexico if you go farther south…so getting a job down there shouldn’t be as hard as they make it out to be. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been down there several times with my church helping the needy…but come on…

My husband is here legally from the Philippines, and he’s applying for citizenship, and going through the right course of action…seriously, it’s not impossible.

What’s with the whole thing about getting rights as Americans on that day when all the Mexicans went on strike, and they were flying THEIR native flag? That doesn’t really send a strong message…”viva la mexico” ? but give us a green card?! what?!

  • NO VACANCY

  • They’re just mad because the government isn’t making money off of them :P

  • I tend to sympathize more with the immigrants, but that’s because of a variety of personal biases. Logically speaking, it is stupid to just let people come to and fro into the States on the basis that our country is “free” because then… well, what would be the meaning of citizenship? And when you can do something legally, you generally should try and get it done that way. I understand that there are circumstances in which it is very hard to do it the legal way, but just because I can’t afford a new, black Mercedes-Benz right now doesn’t mean I should steal one.

  • I don’t think it’s that difficult to get in… people get in illegally all the time.

  • I’m curious about what percent of illegal immigrants actually pay income taxes. If they can prove they’ve been paying taxes, I think they should be given a chance. If not, then they need to figure out how they can justify their stay here — or demand path to citizenship.

  • I agree with alphanova. There us no clear cut answer to your question.

Personally, it greatly angers me that they want to come in and have access to all of our welfare programs without putting anything into the economy. Perhaps not all of the illegal immigrants are like this, but many of them in my state are. We’re swamped because it is so easy to get welfare. Why should our citizens have to pay for another country’s citizens who don’t want to put anything back into our economy? My relatives came through Ellis Island, and it was NOT easy getting started here. They worked hard starting farms in the Midwest. Easy? No. You try clearing forests, building a home, feeding and milking animals, all without our modern comforts. Easy? I don’t think so.

I think all immigrants should have to go through the proper paperwork. It might not have always been the law, but it is now. And that’s what everyone should follow. Don’t like it? Don’ live here.

  • Oh man you are my hero truththepaige.

  • OH man, almost everyone on the second page is my hero. What the heck is wrong with the majority of people on the first page?

  • im hating that every damned immigration pic has to feature some person in either red, white and green, or in this case, a sombrero.

  • i do not think people have it difficult at all. it should be more difficult.

  • where the fuck did you get the idea we came here freely? we did more than a little battle for most of this land

  • I don’t know about your ancestors, but it was extremely difficult for mine! The pioneers I know are so amazingly exemplary in being able to overcome difficulties! Of three brothers from germany, one died on the trip. It was rough. 1775. On the other side, less known, but life in Yellville AK was not easy in the old days. Nor was life in Tombstone – Cochise coUNTY az…..remember Wyatt earp? his area.

so much for easy! and we need to have values as what is an american, and teach and support this. As it is now, I do not think those comming to my town, miami, DO come to the USA….this is the capitol of Latin AMerica

  • The question is disingenuous. “Nobody can own the land” makes it sound like America’s just this big mean nasty place that won’t let people live in a certain geographical location. But of course, the reason we don’t want people coming in whenever they want is because of our country – because of all the things our government does for citizens. Those things aren’t free, and those of us who are here already don’t feel like picking up the tab.

    -(—-

  • The fact is that without illegal immigrants, who would be doing all the dirty work for less than minimum wage, living in the poorest neighborhoods, and being bashed by everybody?

Make them citizens, and they might *gasp* try to have the rights that the rest of us take for granted.
    Posted 5/1/2007 5:19 PM by Rajani_Arantxa

I hate this mentality that if they’re not here no one will do the dirty work. You know what? I think it’s pathetic that some of our own Americans are too “good” or lazy to do the dirty work for this country. Maybe they should get off their ass, stop collecting welfare, and do some work for a living.. some manual labor for a change.

My family came here legally and went through the process to become legal citizens. This mindset that immigrants should have all the rights of Americans and not even put forth the time and effort to do it legally make me sick. No one is entitled to anything, only what you work for. PURSUIT of happiness, not ENTITLEMENT to happiness. You want something, you work to get it. No one’s handing you anything just because you feel you deserve it.

Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s inspiring when people travel to other countries for a better life. But you can bet that in ANY other country, you can’t even stay that long unless you make yourself a citizen and if not, you’re sent back. America is rather flexible with this, and yet they still want more. And I really hate it when people work here then send back to their earnings to another country AND have the balls to bash this country for not giving them more. People who do that sicken me.

  • Man, people should be able to live wherever they want. How can you own the land?
    Yeah? they own YOUR land!

Is it fair to make it so difficult for others to come here when our ancestors were able to come here so freely?
YES! But that was then … now we’re working our butt off and paying for their expenses from education to health insurance, you name it!

  • Yep, especially when they had to learn the language and take tests to get citizenship here.

If you don’t learn our language, get the hell out of our country.

  • Everyone is referencing history, yet the events in the past mean nothing when compared to the scenerio of the present.  Laws are laws, period.  Whether these laws are meant to screw some people over or not, it doesn’t matter.  These laws are for the U.S. government to create and for the rest of the world that enters our borders to follow.  The only interest the U.S. government has to serve is that of the legal residents of this country.  If that means dividing families due to illegal immigration, massive deportation, and/or temporarily crippling industries dependent on low-wage labor; that’s up to the U.S. government to decide.  As long as the decisions made by the government do not infringe on basic human rights alotted to all citizens of this planet, those decisions are final.

The Scenerio: This whole immigration issue is an economic decision.  Is the economic/industrial growth of this nation able to sustain an influx of labor that it is currently experiencing?  Is our current and projected labor capacity sufficient to meet the needs of all industries?  Are the skills and trades by this nation’s current and projected labor force adequate to sustain economic growth for years to come?

These are the questions that must influence the decision on any immigration reform policy.  I don’t know the answers to any of them, and I doubt anyone else that comments on this site has them either.  The only way to have any answers to them is by controlling and monitoring the number of citizens within this nation.  The great thing about this country is that these questions won’t matter if enough people protest and enough politicians are swayed by their sentimental arguments.  That’s fine by me.  Let both sides protest, but the best way to approach immigration reform is to adhere to at least some of these questions.

  • I think everyone should have to serve in the military if they want to be here. You have to understand and actually know what freedom means to you and what better way to appreciate your freedoms than by defending it?

What gets me is the people who DIDNT Immigrate here and they bash their own country and refuse to defend their own rights. Do you have any idea of how many people approach me while Im in uniform and talk about the military-but when I talk to them about joining they tell me “Im scared, its not for me.. I want to go to school first.. eh… yea I never thought about it…” Or some other lame ass excuse? Its pathetic. But I guess its their right.

My parents immigrated here, my father, illegally, but he took the steps to become a citizen and I am the first generation female to do something different and serve in the military. I think I have a deeper appreciation for what America offers and I am willing to sacrifice my life for it.  Unless you know what sacrifice is, I dont think you can actually appreciate the freedoms of this country.

Its not as easy as you think to just come here legally. YOu think you can just leave your country and *poof* some magic wand is waved and you can becomea  citizen?  Nope.. think again. There are some countries that make it hard to leave, especially from overseas. It takes a lot of work and lot of money.

My family and I are currently working to get my husbands family from Korea, and we have to work with an immigration lawyer and we are still having problems…. this has been going on for over a year now.

So..unless you are in that situation, you dont know how difficult or easy it is to leave your country to come to a place of “better” opportunities.

  • Yes.

I refuse to “press 1 for English.”

  • >> “It’s not a “free country” when we make laws as to WHO can COME”.
umm that’s a pretty dumb statement – you obviously don’t get it. “free country” doesn’t mean “free, no cost, take one”. it means those who make up the country (which means citizens) have the FREEDOM to do as they please within the boundaries of the law. duh.

so… “people should be able to live wherever they want”? if all that’s involved is location, then sure why not. but there’s more to it. illegals come here because they want to partake of what our society offers. thing is, they don’t respect the fact that we have laws governing our society, and to be a part of it, you have to live by them. and citizenship is one of them. don’t you realize? if our borders were completely open, how would we control our country? and we all know that there HAS to be government, or else chaos ensues. i mean, just think of it – if north america was just a big piece of land, which happened to have a government located on it, how would things be controlled? think of this: if you get a passport and go to another country, and you do something that you didn’t know was illegal there, wouldn’t there be a difference to you (since you don’t even live there) as to the punishment? yes… however how would that work if a country had no laws regarding coming and going? it would be a mess…

come on people, SUPPORT YOUR COUNTRY: oppose illegal immigration and favor legal immigration.

  • No, people should not be able to live where ever they want. It’s a flawed and unreasonable argument to say that our ancestors came here freely – therefore we should let others do the same. Early colonialism didn’t have hospitals, publically funded school (to the extent we have now), social services or a police force.

Here in the 2007 – we have all those things – and it costs a lot of money. It is neither justified nor in a spirit of justice, to say that those who come here without going through the system legally to get here – are entitled to those things. They don’t pay for them – but those here legally do. Illegals are a drain on the system.
America has a history of having no problem whatsoever with legal immigration. Where America has issues with is when illegal immegrants to come to America and wave the Mexican flag around in a parade and then blame the ones here legally for their problems, their fears and their incessant whining about what they are “entitled” to now that they are here.

  • The difference:  My grandparents and great-grandparents actually worked hard for a living after LEGALLY immagrating to America.  Illegal aliens can get welfare and free medical help.  You’ll notice that there are hardly any hospitals open around the border any more becase they’ve been run out of business by the illegals who can’t pay them.

If they want to be Americans, they are able to do so legally.

  • This is the best post about illegals anywhere:

  • Yep.  First come, first serve.

  • ive got nothing against  immigrants, its the illegal ones that tick me off.were citizens & we have to follow the rules.why shouldnt they??w/out history, youve got nothing.thats why they teach it in school.b/c if you dont know your past, you cant know where your going.that simple.i think these rules are fair.our ancestors had to.if there wernt any rules for them,we’ld get bashed all the more cuz when there arent any rules, theyll expect to get everthing handed to them on a golden platter,& then when they get thrown in jail b/c they wanted something & stole it,& their families are gunna be ticked.if you want something bad enough work for it in honourable means.if it means taking a job no one else wants, take it.be better  the person.and not all americans are lazy slobs.take my dad for instance.not a hint of mexican in him.he works in sceptic tanks.my aunt(dads sister) works at a landfill.maybe the gov. could cheapen the process to become a citizen though.MINOR changes to the rules.not doing away w/them completely.its called compromise people.those of you on the first page,im sorry, but yall are some VERY confused liberals.and just b/c you had to learn english to live here,it doesnt mean you can complain.you can still talk spanish or whatever language you spoke before you came here.they do that so you have a chance at a good job.whether or not you decide to get off of your butt & take that oppurtunity,is your descision.citizens in highschool & sometimes college, have to learn a secound language to graduate.im 13 & im billingual.& im not mexican.it aint that hard.they do that to give you oppurtunity.land of oppurtunity people!OPPURTUNITY to avoid the job nobody wants.so quit whinning!!

  • I agree with that person who commented. There shouldn’t be ownership on land to the point where it makes it so hard for people to live here.

  • Yes, I think it’s fine. Our ancestors had to be put through a battery of tests in order to be accepting into the country, and even then if they were seen as an immigrant they were mistreated. It would not be fair to all the immigrants (even immigrants today) if citizenship was made easier to get. America isn’t a right, it’s a privilege.

  • wow sorry for the spelling errors, my computer is lagging.

  • There’s no easy answer for this one. I live in S Calif about 20 min from the border. The neighborhood I live in might as well be Mexico. All the signs are in Spanish, the majority of the people are Mexicans, no one speaks English and the Mexican flags fly. I’ve been to Mexico everywhere from Tijuana to Acapulco. Gotta say it is a poor country with a corrupt government (government sounds like ours!) However, I feel they should go thru the proper channels to become citizens and LEARN the language. I work with a girl born in TJ and she’s here on a green card. Her mother just got her citizenship last year and she should get hers this year. It can be done.

  • I think they should pay a fee for trespassing. They broke the law. But they should be able to have a path to become a citizen. But the government should be the only one to do it.

  • some of our ancestors risked their lives to come over here.

  • There are standards that must be met to immigrate to ANY country.
If you can not meet those standards, then you can not immigrate. Get yourself together, and stop jumping the fence.
I’m so sick of illegal immigrants STEALING my potential jobs, it’s destroying the ‘little guys’ ability to keep even minimum wage positions.
