You should strive to be healthy, but hey if you’re big, you’re big. I’m not a hater.
um noooo
I mean yes
I mean nooo
Read the article: seems like a positive message!
I like other fat people just fine, I just don’t want to be fat myself. Comprehende?
No fat chicks.
Unless you’re really easy.
“I’m fat, and it’s OK,” the vivacious Nash says in her clip. “It doesn’t mean I’m stupid or ugly or lazy or selfish. I’m fat.”
Come now. . .she’s right that being fat doesn’t mean you’re stupid or ugly or lazy or selfish. . .
However, being 224 pounds isn’t very healthy. . .so she’s really not “okay”
I don’t see how she can say she is OKAY
My closest friends are all overweight and I wouldn’t change them if I could- they are beautiful from the inside out and that’s how it ought to be
I’ve read several studies about how people who are “overweight” according to somebody’s standards are more generous than those who are stingy on the biscuits for themselves
of course healthy is what we should all strive for- but that doesn’t mean we’ll all be a size 2- that’s the beauty of God’s creation- there’s diversity even in unity
Ok looking? or Ok health wise?
No! [nibbles on celery]
if you’re okay with it…then it’s good for you
Glad you think so.
But really, people ask me that. Like the dietician at the hospital, “do you think I’m fat, since I’m fatter then you”
“I’m fat” is more of a personal thing. . .
Doesn’t mean I have a problem with others around me who are “normal weight” or even “over-weight”
oh wait, you were talking about my entry ha ha. That would make more sense then my comment LOL, (didn’t see anything particucularly good about that!)
yeah, I liked what I wrote too. . .I actually wrote it during my dad’s astronomy lecture (I’m not taking it for credit, so it doesn’t matter if I don’t pay any attention to what he says!)
So why will I likely be doing a 3 + hour homework assignment today that he assigned, if I won’t be graded for it anyways. . .
I think it’s okay, as long as that fat isn’t the result of laziness/almost total inactivity. Then again, if a person was regularly active, they’re not likely to be fat. *shrug*
Well, if you can’t do anything about your fatness (in a healthy sort of way), I guess its ok to be fat…
You know what really makes fat people upset? If you call them by their future disease. e.g. “Hey there, type 2!”
Is it okay to have no self control? to have diabetes? to have heart disease? is it OK to have a stroke? i mean, i guess… whatever floats your boat.
Ya know… it depends… my doctor told me the same thing; I am moderately obese, and I want to loose weight; so, I’m exercising every day and started Weight Watchers. I don’t want to be skinny as a rail, but at least get to a weight that is healthy for me.
Some people cannot loose all the weight they want because of health or metabolic issues; but, they can eat healthy and exercise.
Depending on age, height, body frame… I’m taller than most women (5′ 7″) so, I carry my weight a little better than some…
Eat right and exercise is the key!
Actually, I thought she looked pretty good for 224 pounds…
ha!
Hi Dan!!!
It’s okay if your fine with it, but no healthy wise.
I’m sorry, but if your fat you can have all type of health problems. Mostly Heart Problems.
Ummm.. Not all fat people are unhealthy… ^^^
But Ok… Hmmm… Live and let live… I don’t go for this suing Bk or McD’s though… I mean you have to know if your eating it it isn’t great for you… Ang
It’s not very healthy.
It’s good that she’s comfortable with her body.. I weigh under 120 and I’m going through the “you need to be skinnier” phase. So- in that way, I wish I could be more like her.
But still- being “fat” isn’t okay. There are so many diseases that come with obesity.
if you’re happy with yourself, that’s all that matters.
It’s OK to be yur natural body shape. You shouldn’t starve or gorge yourself. If you’re naturally a little chubby, you’re naturally a little chubby. That’s OK.
oh i liked that video, i think its okay to be fat, by all means….. as long as you are healthy… well even if you are unhealthy if you are happy with yourself, you are okay
I loved the video. I actually didn’t think she looked like she weighed that much, but I guess she’s taller than me. At my heaviest I weighed less than her, but I didn’t have that confidence. If I had that sort of confidence then it probably wouldn’t have taken me as long as it has to lose the 25+ I’ve lost so far and probably be easier to keep losing, instead of it coming off slowly. It sounds like she’s pretty active and not letting others and their opinions keep her from activities and sports. If she’s happy and she has the regular check ups and isn’t suffering then I think it is okay for her. There are lots of people who have been there/are there who just wallow in it and suffer and no, I don’t think that’s okay. I think it’s a person by person thing and depends on your overall outlook on life and what you want and expect to get from it.
I don’t have anything against fat people, but I don’t want to be fat. I just find it gross. I hate to be like this, but it makes me want to throw up whenever I see someone morbidly obese.
One of my friends is morbidly obese. We are limited to what we can do because activity tends to be incredibly painful for him. I dated a girl once who was 200+ pounds.
I was angry at them both. But that isn’t very nice. I was angry at a boy I dated because he wasn’t a girl too.
Now whose fault is that?
Do you not like fat people? WHY… do you not like fat people?
Look within if you experience hate out. Oh fuck it, IM HOMELESS BIATCHES!!! I’m pissed off. Playing with deflator is the most fun I have these days…
“You should strive to be healthy, but hey if you’re big, you’re big. I’m not a hater. “
“I like other fat people just fine, I just don’t want to be fat myself. Comprehende? “
Yeah, that sums it up for me.
If you’re fine with your body, that’s allright. But um, that’s pretty unhealthy.
It’s okay to be a bit bigger, but I don’t think it’s okay (for the sake of the person’s health) to be severely overweight, but I still don’t have a problem with that.
I think that’s such a subjective question that I can’t possibly answer it with any measure of certainty. If by OK you mean acceptable by your peers then it would depend on the opinions of your peers. If by OK you mean acceptable to yourself then that depends on how you feel about yourself. If by OK you mean healthy then I suppose that should be determined by a competent health professional, which is also subjective since “health” is a relative term as well. My father-in-law doesn’t have high blood pressure, has good [healthy] cholesterol levels, and is probably 40 lbs. overweight. So according to most standard tests he would be considered healthy. Do you see how it’s just not a very good question to answer?
If you follow a balanced diet and get a fair amount of exercise and you’re still fat, then yes, it is okay to be fat. Some people are just a bit chubbier. There’s nothing wrong with it.
As long as you’re healthy that’s what matters. Being overweight is not necessarily good for you, and neither is being underweight. If you exercise regularly, eat smart and work towards being in a condition that you are happy with, then it’s fine. But if you sit around and grow and say it’s okay, no it’s not. When you’re “okay” with yourself, you leave it at a status quo, and if overweight, you’ll never work on your health.
as long as it does not affect your health!
That is a great video. She rocks.
Yes. I think our bodies have a natural weight they want to be. We can diet and diet, but we bounce right back to that weight.
Of course, there are some who aren’t really at that weight and take three seats at a football game. That’s not who I am speaking of.
no.
it’s not ok for me.
It is ok the way she said it: if you eat well and excercise but are still overweight. But being shlub is bad.
Well…. no. aside from being unhealthy.. well, it looks bad. even if that sounds shallow…
See the movie 300? We should all live like that. Work out 10 hours a day, and eat only what we would be able to obtain, were we living in ancient Greece.
Wow, thats funny NikBv.
Did you fail notice that the Spartans threw the undesirable looking infants off cliffs.
I’m fat. Is it okay to be skinny?
The girl in that picture does not look that fat.
Fat is okay. Obese is not. Joy Nash doesn’t look unhealthy to me!
Doctors don’t seem to think so.
I believe there is a point where it becomes unhealthy but if you are healthy than I don’t think there is a problem. I have a much bigger problem with the idea that some “they” can tell people how much they should weigh. Not all 5’2” girls should weigh 110lbs. With that said after I have my baby I do want to lose weight…but because of health not society.
if anyone can tell me specifically what ‘fat’ means then we can judge. Until then, to each their own…
Not everyone can be a size two.
She’s not fat though, she’s thick. I’m the same way. No one believes me when I say that I’m 160lbs and a size 10. No one. They all think I’m 130. My body fat percentage is pretty low too, it was less than 20%, I know that for sure. A fat person would not be able to carry 225 lbs as well as she does. Nor would they be able to fit into a size 18.
It’s alright if you, like the lady in the video, eat healthily and exercise and are still “big”. That’s probably just her natural body weight. Who am I to say what someone else’s body should look like if they are obviously taking care of it?
I would never want to be “fat” per se. I have problems with being at an average or even underweight BMI, but that is my own issue and I don’t project that onto anyone else. I think this lady is quite pretty.
I prefer slim people, but fat people are okay. In neither case to I like people with a fat head, i.e. stupid and dim.
I think it is funny that the adds at the bottom of the article are about weight loss products.
Sure!
But you don’t have to go around all like “HI! I’M FAT! LOVE ME!! Skinny people suck and they all think the same!!”
I have to admit, I have been 120 lbs (I’m 5′ 3.5″) and I’m not happy or confident at that weight. (Even though it puts me at a tiny 4-6) I wish I was. I think anyone else that size looks great, but I judge myself so harshly. So I’ll say its not okay for me to be fat. But my thinking on the subject is a bit disordered.
I really don’t think she’s that fat. I guess she wears it well.
it’s okay to be fat if it’s not affecting your health, just like it’s okay to be skinny if it’s not affecting your health.
but, i don’t think it’s okay for morbidly obese people to say “it’s okay to be this big!” because really, it’s not. that’s just the same as all the anorexia people promoting a “pro-ana” lifestyle, which people jump down their throats about.
bottom line – if you’re skinny and healthy, great. if you’re big and healthy, fantastic. the only problem comes from being UNhealthy.
“You know what really makes fat people upset? If you call them by their future disease. e.g. “Hey there, type 2!”
-deflator
ahhhhhhhahahahhahaha. thats amazing.
and no. its not ok to be fat. Sorry fattys. Honestly its can’t be that hard to lose weight. People want to hear that there is a miracle diet or a way they can drop all weight in a short time. Theres no such thing. Most fat people are in denial that diet and excersize are the best ways to be healthy.
As long as you’re healthy, I don’t see a problem carrying a little weight. For some people (like me), it’s just how their body is built.
According to the article, she clarifies that it’s acceptable if you diet and excercise. I agree with that. I like that she doesn’t advocate being unhealthy, but she says it should be okay to simply be built that way. Because of the conditions she puts on it. I agree wholeheartedly
She looks like one of those people who would annoy the hell out of me.
Depends… from a medical stand, no. But…. I dunno. Being “overweight” doesn’t make you any less of a person. Seems to me like the thinner and more beautiful you are, the less you care about others. Not to say that no thin, beautiful men and women care about other people. It’s just that they don’t know what it’s like to have to use your personality alone to create friendships and relationships. I think heavier people are often times, better people. Again, not saying thin, beautiful people aren’t good people. I’m in no way knocking people who are naturally thin or who work hard on a daily basis to be that way. I wish I could be like that, but I’m not.
Being “fat” isn’t as bad as it’s made out to be. Again, that’s not from a medical stand, but… as far as life goes, fat people are generally pretty nice, happy people.
I’m saying as a general statement… not as facts or saying that ALL people are this way… just to clarify. I don’t want to offend anyone.
first off, from her picture, i wouldn’t call her fat. at most, she is husky. really, just stout.
it’s not OK to be so fat that is affects your health. even being a little overweight can cause health problems, or complications. if you are so fat that you are obese, that is DEFINITELY NOT OK. but she seems fine, she looks healthy enough. i think the point is, if you are just a little heavy and you still look good, then don’t pressure yourself to be thinner than you can be easily. accept your body type, and love who you are no matter what you look like.
it’s funny I have a friend, the girlfriend of one of my bestfriends who himself is rather fat, and she is just as skinny as a twig. she used to get flack from people that she was “anorexic” but she eats as much as he does… they just have different metabolisms and different body types. and that’s, as Joy said, “OK!”
she doesnt look 224…..and she looks happier than me.good lord, maybe I should get fat!!!!!!
well not obesely fat. but. she looks fine. a little overweight. and its fine to be that. but not ok to be obesely fat. thats just too fat.
You love contreversy.. don’t ya?
Some people.. can not help it. It’s not because they over eat.. or are lazy. Some.. just have that in their genes.
I tend to care about people for who they are.. not how much they weigh.
But.. I do find that I am not attracted to overly obese people.. so I guess I am not as perfect as I like to think.
No
But it’s also not ok to be super skinny pole person either. It’s better to be healty. .
But then again… to each his own… it’s not my body.
umm this women doesn’t look morbidly obese, just maybe at added like 40 pounds…as long as your eating healthy, you feel healthy, and your happy with your life then whats wrong with it.
i guess. but if you’re seriously obese, you really need to re-think your lifestyle.
she looks ok and yes you can still be healthy and thick (my word of choice)
Its all a matter of what you are happy and comfortable with.
As long as she’s healthy… and how tall is she? You can’t go off of weight alone… and she doesn’t LOOK 224 pounds!!
Sure, if you’re ok with the fact that you’re putting yourself at a much higher risk for a whole lot of health problems. Do they have good health insurance?
…and I can’t see the vid From most of the comments, she’s not that large.
Is it too much to ask that fat people wear clothes that fit. Bulges upon bulges are not something I wan to see.
It isn’t the healthiest way to be, but I get her point. We place far too much on physical appearance when it has nothing to do with who the person is…
well…my response to this is: if you’re fine with how you look then hell, its ok to be fat.
She’s pretty.. but 224 pounds?? It’s not “just” a number. I wonder if she has any clogged arteries.. hmm.
What do you mean, “Is it OK to be fat?”. For something to be “OK”, it has to be from someone’s perspective. A real question would be, “Is it OK for you to be fat?”, or “Is it OK for your girl/boyfriend to be fat?”, or “Is it okay for some random person in your life to be fat?”.
I think the point she is trying to make is that people should not look at her and automatically assume she is trying desperately to lose weight, or has/will have health problems, or has other kinds of “problems” associated with being “fat”. She is happy, not hurting herself or others, and it’s definitely none of your business if you see her at McDonald’s ordering two Big Macs, Supersize fries, and a diet coke. Some people just like the flavor of diet coke.
I didn’t read all of the previous comments, so I’m a horrible person. However, there is a huge difference between “Fat” and “Obese”. There is very little wrong with being larger than your “target weight.” The problem comes when someone is sacrificing their health because they think it’s ok to be “Fat”. Working in a hospital, I can’t tell you how frustrating it is to do exams and studies on people who just want to know what is wrong with them, they just want to get better… only to know that the VERY reason the study can’t tell us anything is because they’re too overweight for the equipment. Also that very likely losing weight would solve most of the problems in the first place. It’s ok to be fat. It’s ok to be thin. Just try to be healthy.
FAT is just a word that stands for Fabulous and Thick. Like joy says, she’s not saying to be a couch potatoe, but if you have tried, and are as healthy as you can be, and are still FAT then big deal, it does not define who we are or how we should be treated.. I am a FAT woman, and I have come to love myself for who i am, not the size i am.
Fat does not equal unhealthy any more than skinny equals healthy.
It’s sure not healthy.
But in the end, I guess it depends on what your definition of “okay” is. For me it’s sure not okay!
If we’re talking about Nash’s video and her idea of “It’s OK to be fat.” Then yes. It is OK to be fat!
Well it could be good for your confidence. But shes just lying to herself.
I’m 5’8″ and 160 pounds. I exercise a couple times a week and have good self-control with what I eat. I am still not the skinniest girl around. What does it matter? If you’re healthy, then have a few extra pounds should be “okay.” I just don’t understand, what is everyone’s big deal with being the lightest weight or skinniest person ever?! I have friends who have extra weight, and I have friends who are underweight. As long as you are healthy, it doesn’t bother me.
If you are making an effort at being healthy then it is not a problem to be fat.
if you eat right, exercise, live a healthy lifestyle, then yes. sometimes you can’t HELP being overweight. there’s a difference between obese and overweight; I don’t think her moderately obese body is unhealthy… if she lives like she says she does, then yes, it’s okay. sometimes there’s only so much you can do.
Well Dan,
I Loved that !! I just wonder how tall she is…I thought she was Beautiful !
The Fact is that 75 Percent of Americans are Over weight. Has Half or 75 % of your readers said that its ok to be Fat, because they should have.I myself consider my self over weight.. I am 5 ft 10 inches Tall for a woman I am Tall… I carry my weight well- I am just big, I have always worked out but not watched what I eat, and right now am suffering from Sciatica, But that is Not from being Fat- Its from having 2 kids then had trama to my back then having 2 more kids at the age of 39 & 40, Not a spring chicken at the least..
People come in all sizes, and Yes you can be fat and healthy…
Whst do you think Dan ? , I know you yourself were loosing weight at some piont in time inthe near past
I prefer not to be fat.
This reminds me of a rant I wrote a few months ago in my own blog (http://www.xanga.com/guylygirl/579941579/fat-is-not-a-curse-word.html)Say you know someone with a broken leg. Is it “okay” for them to have a broken leg? It’s not healthy to have a leg that’s broken. But it’s okay for them to have a broken leg. Because it’s broken, and that’s the way it is. But if that person decided to not go to the doctor and get it looked at, refused to wear a cast or do physical therapy, then there would be a problem. If they started blaming everything that was going wrong on their leg without making any effort to improve the situation, then there situation isn’t okay. The actual state of being fat isn’t the problem. It’s the attitude that surrounds the weight problem. She’s not lying to herself. She’s actually being more honest with herself than most fat people are. It’s easy to blame everything on your weight, and then blame America or fast food or whatever for the fact that you’re obese. It’s not easy to say “You know what, I’m fat.” Besides that, she mentioned that she’s eating right and exercising.I myself am about 50 pounds overweight. I think it’s fine that I’m fat, but it’s not healthy. I would like to lose weight, I am working hard to do it. And no, it’s not easy. Eating healthier and exercising more is a simple enough idea, but actually implementing it means a change in lifestyle and any habit is hard to break or form. Not to mention that fat people exercising get laughed at. Fat people jogging down the street are mocked. So we don’t exactly feel comfortable going to the YMCA or whatever. Plus, losing weight this way is slow, a healthy rate is about 2 pounds a week. So for me that’s 25 weeks of disciplined exercise. At least. That’s a long time when every time you turn on the TV people have lost 60 pounds or more in just three months, and you’ve lost 10 pounds in five weeks. It’s another downside to the world’s expectation of instant gratification.
What I find unattractive is when people cut them selves down for either being over weight or percieving that they are over weight. Unhealthy is differant then not being at your desired weight, but if you can be happy with yourself, you have acheived more then any diet will ever do for you.
BTW, I find the women pictured as being extremely attractive
it did it again… the end of the URL is fat-is-not-a-curse-word.htmlokay, I’m really done now.
NO NO NO NO NO NO!!! Fat is NOT okay!!! It is unhealthy and unattractive and unnecessary.
“NO NO NO NO NO NO!!! Fat is NOT okay!!! It is unhealthy and unattractive and unnecessary.” -ana4jackiroseFor that comment, I’d like to point out a comment that someone on youtube said:”What I find hilarious is that people are saying, “OMG fat people are so unhealthy!! They should stop being fat, they’re killing themselves!!” while there are plenty of skinny people drinking, smoking, and drugging themselves to death. Are you this big of a crusader for these people? Do you wander into bars at two in the morning yelling, “Stop, you morons, you’ll all get liver failure!!” If you’re concerned about HEALTH of the population in general, say THAT. Insults aren’t necessary.”Damn straight.:)
well it has some major health issues, and you really should WANT to be healthy, but hey. if your okay with it, then so be it.
me on the otherhand, it isn’t okay to even reach triple digits on the scale.
I guess it depends on how you define fat, doesn’t it?
MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I dont think shes fatand there is a difference between hefty and fat… id say that one should be aware of health concerns – but some people dont feel like going to the gymand working out for 2 to 5 hours a day just to loose a few punds a week or a month…. I know i dont, i hate working-out unless its playing rakcetballDaniel (doubledb)
It’s only ok if you feel ok. Just be happy…That is all that really matters.
umm I don’t think its healthy….unless its your natural body shape to be large..
if thats her in the pic…shes not fat…
but i think that we could all use a little tune up…physically, its certainly not okay for your health to be fat, but some people cant help it, what with sickness or if they are invalid.
emotionaly it also somtimes inhibits the extent to which they can enjoy life…for one, there are those who cant take a walk, or even get on a roller coaster. sit in a movie theatre…etc.
plus the theological, i guess you could call it…gluttony is a sin. not that all people that are overwheight can help it…diabetes, back trouble, confined to a wheel chair–these can all contribute to obesity, and not mean that they are gluttons. but, if you are filling yourself and focusing your attention on food or being lazy and dont excersise, that is not taking care of the house God has made for you…and thats like shoving it back in his face that you dont need him. and im as guilty of this as anyone, and im trying to do better.
Its okay to be fat…but not the norm, and not the should, and not best.
I don’t consider myself to be a small woman (and neither would other people) but I go for walks, go shopping, love to swim and do other things. I’m not a size 2 and that’s alright by me! lol I’ve been to the doctor to have a complete examination and everything came back fine. Just because you’re bigger or over your ideal weight doesn’t mean that you’re going to have a heart attack, stroke or end up with diabetes. There are so many other factors that contribute to those conditions but no one ever takes that into consideration. A slender man or woman with a very stressful job, aggressive personality and who always gets upset is just as likely, if not more likely to suffer from a heart attack or stroke. It’s not about the size, it’s about how you perceive yourself. If you’re always stressing out or others are making you stressed out about your size, that’s a heavy (no pun intend) factor to whatever could happen to you down the road. What is Monique that said, “I don’t have a weight problem, you have a problem with my weight”. That, to me, says it all.
Forgive my bad grammar and typos….it’s been a long day of looking at furniture! lmao!
Im fat, and I don’t like it or think it’s right. Granted, I am pregnant and am about to give birth in July, but I was always a big girl.
I plan on weighing less than I originally did after the birth of my little girl. Being fat is not ok.
ps– I was clinically overwheight…what type of “fat” are we talking about?
yeah. unless it becomes a health issue. my mother thinks she’s fat but she exercises daily and maintans a very healthy lifestyle. I don’t think all fat people are unhealthy, but then again I’m not a doctor. There are plenty of skinny people who are unhealthy as well.
The only thing I can see wrong with being fat is that it can negatively affect your health. However, you should never feel degraded because you’re bigger than anyone else. There’s just more to love.
like the video says tell ur weight.. i weigh 158… an im 6-6… i am clearly not fat. haha
anywho… look some people are fat… some arnt… some just by genitics other because they have no self control… and yes thin people are more attractive… but not everyone has to look like them… being thin is almost worse… everyone tells u that ur thin… hey dumbass i have a mirror… just have a good personality an people will like u for who u are.
I think this woman is right on.
Her video is cool!
It’s ok to be fat just not for children.
I hate it.. I don’t think it’s “ok” and I wish that I wasn’t. And I do have prejudices about other fat people. You asked.
What I think is interesting is the amount of people who openly admit that they feel they are overweight. Maybe not that, but the fact that they will tell you their height but not their weight. After that they proceed to qualify themselves by saying “I wear it well” or “I carry my weight well” as if there is a “normal” body and then the excess fat they have on their bodies shouldn’t be there, but it’s there anyway. If it feels like something extra… maybe it is? Something I was thinkin about.
It’s not necessarily “healthy”…but if the person that is fat is okay with being fat then sure! If they are okay with it then they obviously aren’t going to be taking any steps to lose the weight anyway.
lol! sorry, but i think the video is very funny. she dose have a point.
if she is happy with how she looks that is all that should matter.
she doesn’t really look fat to me. she just looks like a bigger sized person.
i persoanlly would not be happy if i were over weight.
I guess as long as you are comfortable with yourself and healthy.
BTW, did you mean to put that pun in there? XD
Fat is a relative term.
she doesnt look fat…
its ok to be big-boned… but its not ok to be unhealthy..
just as an observation, it seems most people are fat becuase of self-conciousness about their weight, which leads to a search for comfort… many, find that comfort in eating… eating, leads to greater weight problems… — vicious cycle — … they need help…
miss nash in particular appears to be pretty comfortable, so she’s part of a lucky minority who have the power to improve…
OMG-
I’m suprised… and a little shocked by some of the above comments. I guess being fat is really the last form of prejudice left people. I suppose this means I should just end my life because I weigh what she does… and by the way- I am not unhealthy… I don’t have high blood pressure, I don’t have diabetes, I eat a balanced diet… and I am exercising regularly. Because I do yoga pretty much everyday I’m more flexible than women half my size! I’m fat for reasons too personal to list here… but I’m dealing with those issues. Who knew I’d also have to deal with all of you skinny people thinking the worst of me…
I made a slide show on beauty…………….LOL………hugs.
I LOVE IT! She is speaking for all of us. All of it is true. Companies do not pay attention. Designers do not pay attention. We put ourselves down much more than other people do. No, I don’t think it is okay to be obese. It isn’t okay to be unhealthy, but I have been (still am) in the same situation where I have eaten right (diabetic), excercised (swimming hour to an hour and a half), and tried to do everything in my power to lose weight, and it still will not drop off. I ended up with wonderful muscles, but no weight loss. Now, after stopping swimming, I end up with less weight, but why? Because I lost the muscle. You can’t win. I’m ranting myself. Okay, I’ll go back in my corner.
Thats cool. ^^
I do agree with her.
I saw her video a long time ago and was surprised that I liked it.
To answer your question, it is OK for other people to be fat. It is NOT Ok for me to be fat.
i think it’s ok in terms of embracing youself for who you are, but at the same time it’s hard to strike a balance between that and just completely live in gluttony, because yeah being healthy is important too. i didnt watch the video but from the article i get the sense that she’s trying to establish the fact that appearance does not define who you are, as much as the media may tell us otherwise, which is a very good message.
Haha, Dan, are you actually asking whether it’s indirectly OK for YOU to be fat?
Depends…but I like the positive message she is sending with that video. Not everyone can be a size 2 – sometimes genetics play a big part in our weight, and that’s okay. As long as we are out there exercising, eating right, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle – that’s what matters.
I guess everyone reacts the same way to being fat, we all don’t want to be fat but won’t want ourselves to be fat. It takes alot of confidence to stand out in this lousy superficial society to say that ‘Its okay for me to be fat !”, and we should applaud her for that. Acceptance of my own body size has been always been a big issue to me, subconsciously i compare myself with friends all the time and gets real upset when i am bigger than them. Eeks. In an all twisted sense, we can see why people don’t mind having others being fat; To make themselves feel better.
However, confidence is one thing and stay healthy is another thing. Maintaining a BMI above the healthy zone is bad for the body, and may lead to problems down the road. Maybe, she should have said, “I am fat, but its o-k-a-y cause i am healthy !” instead.
Be happy!!!!
I’m in love with her video and will be showing it to family and friends – regardless of their body size. I think everyone needs to see this video.
If you want to be healthy? Probably not. That doesn’t mean anyone should be hated for it though… some people find it beautiful… some “overweight” girls are absolutely gorgeous.
yea, that is unless you are dying or something
There is nothing wrong with being fat as long as you’re still healthy. And yes, some people can be fat but still be healthy. Genetics. The “right” and “healthy” weight to be is relative. It depends on so many things about your culture, history, race, etc.
yes
it’s ok to be anything you want as long as it doesn’t impose on anyone else personal liberties… so yes, it’s ok to be fat.
it is probably even more ok to be fat if you look like her…
If it doesn’t bother them, then it doesn’t bother me. I just hate how most of them (or at least the ones I’ve met) will say a healthy-looking woman is skinny and anorexic.
i believe you should strive to be the healthiest you can be, but if God gave you a little bit extra…go with it…get clothes that flatter you. work with what you got! i have seen fat people who look waaaaayyy better than the thinner people because of the flattering clothes they wear.
PS.WHY IS MOST OF THE EMPHASIS ON FAT WOMEN???
personally i think we should be harder on men because well lets face it everyone knows its easier for men to lose weight than it is for women…we are supposed to have fat on us for baby bearing and such…i wanna know what the men’s excuses are!!
Hmmm…. if she’s living completely healthy by eating good foods in moderate amounts and exercising regularly, then of course I have no problem with it. I know that not everything can be changed by diet and exercise, and body shape is one of those things. I don’t think it’s healthy to be at 224 (though I can’t really say much about that), and that if she is dieting and exercising as she says she is, she shouldn’t be that heavy, unless she has metabolic issues.
I do agree with her on not putting your life on hold because you are overweight, though… I’m doing everything I would be doing at a size similar to hers that I would be doing if I were a size 8.
if you mean fat yourself i hav no clue cuz i weight less then the amount of coments you have lol
but if you meen in general….. i dont mind people that are bigger…. my mommy is fat and i still love her!
If you’re naturally big.
I think that it does not matter. People should be able to choose how they want to look without worrying what others think. There are many people in this world who have genuine weight problems and find it impossible to lose weight, but they still have to live with the stigma of being ‘fat’.
People should get over their own vanity and love others for who they are….
until it starts to become a severe health problem, yes it’s ok. personally though i would try to avoid it.
I’m fat. I have a boyfriend who loves fat girls. And I bet I can swim more miles than a skinny girl because I’m in shape.
You know, I weigh 220 pounds myself, and because other people would insult me and call me names when I was a kid…it became really hard for me to accept who I was. But I’m older now, and let me say this: I might be overweight, but I’m nowhere near lazy. I don’t eat all day, and pig out all the time. I’m active, and I like to travel, go for walks, and hang out with my friends. I am NOT my weight. Hell yes, it’s okay to be ‘fat’. No one asked if it’s healthy, or good for you, but it’s not bad. Yeah, I’m trying to lose weight, just because of my family history with diabetes, and my PCOS, but I am who I am. I’m ’fat’, and I’m certainly okay.
It is okay if you are not as skinny as a superstar. It is okay to have curves. But when you start to get a pot belly and enter the “obese” range of overweight, that is not healthy and definately NOT ok!
unhealthy but ok
I’m not fat i’m big boned
No, it’s not.
Is it okay to be fat? In our society that means anyone that’s bigger than Paris Hilton. So…you betcha, it’s okay!
i think being fat is ok as long as u are healthy. if ur not healthy then it is not ok.
People, it depends on genetics… No one ever thinks of that.
I get angry when people make gross generalizations about us “fat kids” -we’re lazy -we have no self-control -we stuff our faces with junk -we are inactive
you know what? it may be true for some, but it’s not true for all.
I’m one for whom it is false. I eat healthy (I’m a vegetarian and have been for 8 years), I exercise regularly (swim, bike and Irish dance), and I don’t eat all kinds of junk (I do have a bit of a sweet tooth, but I don’t overindulge.)
I’m obese. just slightly, but I am.
I watch what I eat and how much I eat… I’m not a lazy bum… but it’s how I am.
I’m ok with this for now.
yes, I am aware of the health risks. but it is possible to be overweight or obese and still be healthy…
so yes, it is ok to not be skinny.
cause if I ever wanted to be a size 2, I would have to do so by unhealthy means (hello Ana!!) and that’s not a good idea.
it’s not healthy. i’ve 50 pounds overweight and doing what i can to get rid of it because of the health risks attached to obesity
She says she exercises and eats healthily, so maybe that’s just the size she’s meant to be. She’s got the right attitude, I think. She is trying to be healthy rather than conform to society’s standards.
No it’s not I’m 186 pounds I want to be thin I hate to be fat.
Yes. As long as you’re healthy and happy, then yes its okay to be fat.
However, is it okay to be so heavy that your life is at risk? Of course not.
I think a lot of ppl would be shocked to find out they fit into the ‘obese’ catagory.
Yea, if the extra pounds are in all the right places.
of course no, i don“t think that it is a good video, i now that a lot of people have eds, but be fat is not better
I enjoy being healthy…
…that being said, I will do all I can to avoid getting fat in my lifetime.
Not too fat because it’s unhealthy.
“If it feels like something extra… maybe it is?”
Which completely excludes those who have an eating disorder, where you can be at a BMI of 13 and still find “fat” on your body.
First of all, she’s not that fat. And she states in the article that diet and exercise are important. If you’re doing all you can to live in the best body you can, that’s great.
But it’s not okay to be morbidly obese, put a strain on the healthcare system, and demand that every store cater to your body.
I guess what I’m saying is that it’s okay to be a little bit fat and comfortable in your body. It’s not okay to make excuses and live in denial about a life-threatening condition.
You know people….the number on the scale is not the thing that everyone should focus on…there are such things as bone mass, muscle mass (which weighs more than fat), water weight, etc that effects the number on the scale. I personally have a thryroid condition that has made me far more heavier than I ever wanted to be…but when I was 5’7 and 200 lbs I was built like brick s*&thouse. I was mainly muscle and could hold my own quite well thank you. Too many people focus on the number on the scale. Before you pass judgment on someone for being “fat” just remember that some cannot help it. For some there are biological forces at work that are beyond their control. I have one friend that eats a 1200 CALORIE DIET and has just at this point been able to halt the weight gain, but is not losing. She works so hard and is stuck at 240lbs. Is this her fault? NO! Yet she feels horrible about herself because people are so insenstive and assume that just because she’s overweight it means that she’s lazy or doesn’t try. Not all skinny people are happy about their size either…the fight to gain. I know extremely slender girls that are so unsure of themselves that they can’t even manage to stand up straight…to spite thier svelte physique they have no selfconfidence and I have some friends that are plus size girls like me that carry themselves with so much confidence that you can’t help but notice them. It’s all about how you feel about yourself and what makes you happy and others should stop putting their expectations and condemnations on others and let them feel as good about themselves as they can at whatever size their pants may be or the scale might read! (Sorry for the rant, you caught me on a day where my patience is depleted!)
“Then again, if a person was regularly active, they’re not likely to be fat.”
i have plenty of overweight friends who excercise a hell of a lot more than i do, including things like kayaking and rock climbing. not likely to be fat? it pisses me off so much when people forget that GENETICS has a lot to do with obesity. some things you just cant help. but that doesnt mean it should be an excuse. im just saying, dont assume all fat people are lazy and eat a lot.
It’s okay to be healthy. No matter what that looks like.
[ariana]
it depends what’s making you fat.
she’s really tall too
so she might only be a little overweight and not have any health issues at all.
but whatever, she’s pretty and smart, and i think she makes sense.

Fat is the new thin.
I like this best of craigslist post from NYC. I totally admire this girl’s attitude!http://www.craigslist.org/about/best/nyc/74954547.html
All of my paragraph breaks disappeared. And the URL is: http://www.xanga.com/guylygirl/579941579/fat-is-not-a-curse-word.htmlAnd there should be a “Say” before that first “you”…
BTW, I find the women pictured as being extremely attractive
it did it again… the end of the URL is fat-is-not-a-curse-word.htmlokay, I’m really done now.
That doesn’t mean anyone should be hated for it though… some people find it beautiful… some “overweight” girls are absolutely gorgeous.
yea,
that is unless you are dying or something
I get angry when people make gross generalizations about us “fat kids”
-we’re lazy
-we have no self-control
-we stuff our faces with junk
-we are inactive
you know what? it may be true for some, but it’s not true for all.
Go check out your numbers at the Dept of Health and Human Resources – http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/bminojs.htm
i love a big boned woman
