  • Turn Off The Spanish TV

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger told immigrants they should avoid Spanish-language media.

    Photo

He said, “You’ve got to turn off the Spanish television set.”  He also told them to stay away from “Spanish-language television, books, and newspapers.”  He added, ”You’re just forced to speak English, and that just makes you learn the language faster.”  Here is the link:  Link

Would immigrants be better off avoiding Spanish TV, books and media?

  • Possibly….Never really thought about it…..

  • It is rather funny he said that. I agree, in a way….

    But, no.

  • Firsties!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  *Does the “I’m first” dance.*

  • in order to learn english, yes, but maybe not in other aspects.

  • maybe not so much avoiding spanish media… but i do agree that more exposure to the english language in any form will help them learn the language better/faster

  • YES!!!

I live in Texas and I am SICK of flipping through a bunch of spanish channels on my tv.  EVERY other channel is in SPANISH.

Half the time it’s not EVEN closed captioned either! If they want “FAIRNESS” they oughta make it CLOSED CAPTIONED for the DEAF too then. Im sure there ARE deaf spanish speaking immigrants????

  • Total cutural emmersion (SP?) is the best way to learn a language. So he is right about the helping to learn English thing.

  • Well – I have heard it said that a person will pick up a language better if forced to use it.  There might be something to this.

  • ^^wow do you have a problem?

  • **darn these fast comments I was referring to wild4surfing

  • It’s good advice.   There’s nothing wrong with lending advice that may help people learn english.  Now, if he implemented some sort of law, then we have an issue.

  • sure…

  • LOL!  That’s why I avoided the word “emersion”, Psalm5110!  I wasn’t sure that I was spelling it right! (and I’m still not sure)

  • If they live in America………..yes……………hugs.

  • Anyway, I think Schwartzenegger is on to something. Immigrants should definitely try and immerse themselves into the new culture and that includes television and media. The more it’s done the better the language is absorbed. They should also try and venture out of their own communities and interact with other communities more (even if they may be discriminated against).

My mother watches television in her language only and works with people who speak her language. Frankly, I think it’s really held back her development in English. So from a personal perspective I can see the utility of this advice.

  • I believe English should be spoken in the schools and taught to anyone in primary school who can not speak it.
As for TV and news papers ,that is a part of their culture…that is going to extremes.

  • Sounds like good advice. Toronto is full of immigrants who’ve been here thirty years and still can’t handle their lives in English due to not following it.

  • Yeah I think so. Is being deaf a disability? What about being able to hear, but not understand what someone is saying. Is that a disability as well? I should think so. If the spanish speaking community wants to disable itself it should remove itself from the english speaking world. That would ensure that there would be no communication between the two, just a lot of “yes” “okay” and “thank you” with no true understanding of anything.

  • No… But you do learn more when you imerse yourself in a language and are forced to learn… It sounds to me like the governor was relating some advice from his learning experience.

He has a point… perhaps to shut themselves off completly isn’t wise… bu watching english telivision and trying to read english would help them…

    Ang

  • Yes. And thanks to those who wish to pardon the illegals, our country is only providing a crutch. We provide the Spanish translations on every single sign – learn English if you want to be in America!

  • There’s a good point in there. And I doubt he’s being discriminatory in saying it. Being a legal immigrant himself. I’d have to agree.

  • Learning English is an important skill. I don’t think it’s an either/or situation. It’s OK to listen to Spanish stations, but you still have to develop your English skills.

  • well most of the time yes. i mean, it wouldn’t be right to tell them to avoid them completely, it’s part of their culture/life.. etc. But they should practice english more often.. i’m tired of talking to people who know zip of english, what’s the point of immigrating into a place where english is the standard language when the person has no interest in even learning how to speak it.

  • It’s good advice for recent immigrants. But for those who have already integrated as far as they care to integrate, I imagine they can watch as much as they like without adverse effects.

Is he jealous, I wonder, that there aren’t many Austrian channels?

  • Learn English, don’t lose your Spanish.

  • Richard Rodriquez (If you have never read “Hunger of Memory”, you should.) would say so. When he was young, the nuns at his Catholic school told his parents they were no longer going to speak in Spanish to him. He learned the language, went to an ivy league university, and is very successful today. It may have come across as prejudiced, but the governator has a point. The more we are immersed in a language, the more we learn it. My hubby has learned more Spanish in his years with his company than he ever did in school. Why? His employees are mostly hispanic. He hears and listens to what they say, so he is learning the language.

  • ewww, he’s a little bit of ass…

i’m american born but of colombian descent and if it wasnt for spanish tv i wouldnt know my language as well

  • That’s how I learned English when I first moved here.

  • If they want to learn english they should.

  • THEY HAVE TO LEARN OUR LANGUAGE. DUH.

    It would help. :P

  • Yep. He’s not saying “forsake your language.” He’s saying it’s pretty darn tough to learn a new language unless you force yourself. People need to get out of their comfort zone before change happens.

  • Avoiding is a strong word. I would say more exposure is a key to learning a new language.

  • I think Arnold is retarded, but I he’s speaking of using methods that he used when he came to this country.

It’s sort of true though. If you come to another country and really want to learn the language, you’ll make every effort to do so.

I’m not saying to abandon your own language and culture though. I don’t think that’s what Arnold is saying either.

  • yes, and quite frankly they SHOULD be forced to learn english. and yes squeakysoul, i do have a problem. im tired of not being able to order a hamburger, or a nacho or taco or any other fast food item without having to go back 3 times or settle for something i dont want because aparently something i say in english means the exact opposite in spanish. im tired of looking through help wanted adds and seeing that more are going from spanish speaking prefered to must speak spanish. im tired of being called stupid, insensitive, and racist because i get upset with people who are too stupid, insensitive, lazy to learn the language of the place they have CHOSEN to live.(and for the idiots who will jump on this, that means i do NOT get upset with immigrants who DO learn the language).  i get tired of people who use thier stupidity, ignorance laziness as an excuse to be further irresponsible and not pay their bills.(yes some of them “cant understand what you are saying” if you say “jose gamez?” because they, in their own words “no speaky engy”) im really tired of people telling me i would do well to learn spanish(which in my opinion is a clumsy ugly language, and thats an opinion i am entitled to) when there are at least 9(nine) other languages i would LOVE to learn but do not have the time or money to do so. so yes, i have a problem. learn english, or go back home. it really is that simple. personally, if the mexican government is so oppressive and corrupt that the people cant develope their own economy and prosper as individuals and a nation, i say we lend them a hand in overthrowing it. there is no geographic anomaly that prevents them from developing as the US and canada did, and yet the answer for so many seems to be to just pack up and head north. i’ve said it a million times and i’ll say it again. when this land was stolen from the native americans there were no malls, outlet stores or booming economies(whether or not thats a good thing is up for debate). hard working, industrious people built all of it where trees and grass used to be. if that’s the mexican dream then there should be no reason that those who want to achieve it without learning english cant achieve it there.

  • learning english yes.

but it would somehow hurt their connection to their culture.

    i don’t think it’s necessary.

  • ionekoa, while you have some legitimate grievances, after that rant yes you do come off as stupid, insensitive AND racist. Spanish is a clumsy ugly language? Where the hell do you get off making that pronouncement? Maybe you say that because YOU are too lazy to stretch out of your comfort zone, and broaden your horizons a bit and learn some Spanish. But I’m not going to argue with you. People like you rarely have the intelligence to open your mind to any kind of change, so what point is there? And that is all I have to say to you.

  • I must agree with squeaky that Ioneka is an ignorant (by his own accord, mind you) Bastardo!!

  • it certainly would put down that language barrier.

  • If you don’t believe me, check out his ninth line from the bottom, second word…

  • and i like the spanish language.

learning the english language is very hard.
    full of contradictions and misconceptions.
the english language is basically just a mixed-mut of other different languages (though i still love english)

spanish is a much much more easier language to learn.
and besides, it must be difficult for the adults seeing as how a person can learn a language best before the age of 12. by then the cognition and concepts would have been well-developed by then. my parents still struggle with the english language because it’s very different from vietnamese (and seeing as how there are some words in english that do not exist in the vietnamese language and vice-versa). i’m sure there are concepts and words that are not shared between english and another “foreign” language as well.

  • I, as an experience vetran of being a foreigner in a country, say YES!!!  You have to completely submerge yourself to learn a language.  That is how I learned both French and Italian….No English for 6 mos to a year except when I called home.

  • Watching tv in English would probably help them learn the language.

  • why should it matter.where i live we only got like 1 channel in spanish unless you want to pay more. they cant get rid of their culture

  • IONEKOA - It’s people like you who make other people hate Americans.  You are so set in your prejudice ways and racist remarks to even want to “broaden your horizons” and learn a new language and culture other than Spanish, so don’t even try to say that you would want to.  You are the kind of person who makes excuses in order to find a way out of them, rather than tackling them head on.  And what on this Earth makes you think that you, as an American, are better than every other sort of culture.  I too am American, but, yes, I am also Mexican, and right now, I would not want to be associated with anything that you would deem to represent you.

  • if they wanted to learn the language then yes. Whose to say though that spanish channels don’t have better shows? I know quite a few shows in English that just suck…

  • Yes, Arnold knows what he’s talking about.

  • And I didn’t mean to make my second comment in bold.  I don’t know how that happened.

  • ABSOLUTELY!!!! Immigrants need to learn how to integrate instead of making their new country bend over backwards to please them.

By not learning the language, they will slowly (in America’s case-rapidly) ruin their culture and destroy them from the inside out.

  • There are benefits to it… it is true that the only way to really learn a language is to totally immerse yourself in it. At the same time, I don’t think it’s really fair to take away ALL things in Spanish. People need a way to relax and distract themselves.

  • Teddy Roosevelt once said (and I agree) that there is but room for one language and one flag in America…don’t remember exactly how it goes.. i’ll look it up tho’

immigrants must assimilate into the mother culture- and the mother culture of america speaks English- this is true for every immigrant in every country- if you move somewhere new you should have the decency and respect to learn the national language and basic cultural norms- otherwise we open the floodgates for chaos and anarchy  (this would be a good time to check out that link I left on the chatboard here)

what mr swartzshorts was saying is not inherently mean or cruel he’s simply encouraging Hispanics to properly assimilate by not sticking within the comfort of media that speaks their mother tounge… i would do the same if i went elsewhere in the world… i did that when i went to Japan.. it’s really the least they can do too

  • ionekoa, I completely agree with you. People need to learn to integrate. I’m tired of bending over backwards for a group of people who are only interested in their own agenda. Europe is a prime example of unchecked immigration. Particularly the Parisian ghettoes and London.

  • Man, fuck Schwarzenegger.

    Racist prick.

Wasn’t his father an SS officer?

  • I think Schwartzenegger has a good point.  Surrounding themselves with English speakers would speed up the learning process.

But totally cutting out Spanish media might be too extreme.  If people want to stay informed about what is going on around them, they should probably watch SOME Spanish language news.  (It would be helpful to then watch the news in English, as well.)

  • They have to learn english if they truly want to be productive in the US. The more they are exposed to english the easier it will be. Once you have a solid base in a language, immersion is the best way to become truly fluent in it.

  • I do. Perhaps it would be best until one learns the language.

  • i don’t know but i love kindergarten cop!

  • It worked for him, apparently.

  • They should learn the language if they want to be Americans. But perhaps classes would be better. If that is not affordable then hell yeah – absorb it any way you can.

  • It’s ridiculous how much we pander to the Spanish-speaking community. Every sign, every amusement park ride, every warning label has Spanish translations. Maybe if we didn’t give them that crutch all the time, we wouldn’t have such a large population of people who didn’t know how to speak the standard language.

If you want to live in the US, you need to learn how to speak English. We shouldn’t have to turn our country into Spain or Mexico for you.

  • Some of your readers are too lazy to read the linked article. Arnold was asked a question on how Hispanic students can improve their performance in school. Arnold’s statement was his ADVICE to the Hispanic students. He does have a point.

  • Good method to learn the language.

  • Yes, I agree with the Governator!

  • Maybe not turn it off completely, but they should limit it.
In my school durring the announcements, they do them in spanish after the english ones. Its like great, way to enable the kids not to learn english…

  • I agree with most of the comments like MiladyMasked. We make it too easy for Spanish-speaking immigrants to NOT learn English by offering a Spanish translation for nearly EVERYTHING.

What’s even more frustrating is that now I’M suppose to learn Spanish so I can help THEM out. I don’t know how many times I’ve been given a nasty look from a Spanish-speaker who asks me a question in Spanish and I have to reply, “Sorry, I don’t speak Spanish.”

My family and I immigrated to America and learned English. We already knew some English and it’s not that hard to learn more IF you actually put in the effort.

Look at this excerpt from the linked article: “Pilar Marrero, the political editor for the Spanish-language newspaper La Opinion, chuckled at the governor’s comments, saying many Hispanics did not have time to learn English.” I don’t even have the words to describe how ridiculous that excuse is.

  • Its an interesting arguement. If you’re really committed to learning a language, absolutely, immerse yourself in the lang but who should they bother?  There’s no national language.

  • You’re still forced to learn the language if you’re involved in a community that speaks English. The area I live in California has a high amount of Latin American immigrants, and in the middle of the school year, my art class got a new girl who could barely speak any English at all. Now at the end of the year, she is quite fluent. I’m sure she didn’t do this just by turning off the tv.

  • Man, if they cut Spanish channels, I would be so upset. I practice my Spanish with those D;

And seriously, to all these racist pricks, you have no idea what these immigrants go through, legal or not. No life should be illegal. There are SO many people racist against Latinos in my school, it’s sickening. If their condition was truly so bad in their country of origin, then we should help them instead of shun them! It is SO incredible that we are in a war to “spread democracy” to Iraq but we won’t do anything to aid the flailing countries in Central and South America. /endrant

  • He does have a point, but they already have to speak English at school, in the grocery store, etc, so what’s wrong with keeping in touch with their native language when they’re home? I lived in a Spanish speaking country, and I still spoke English at home. I still ended up being quite fluent in Spanish. However, I am considering not allowing anyone to speak English to me once I move to the Netherlands later this summer. (at least not the Dutch natives. Americans may speak English to me, of course!)

  • and to add to my previous comment, yes, they do need to learn English, but I see nothing wrong with America eventually becoming a bilingual nation.

  • I have to exonerate Ionekoa. He explicitly said that those were his OPINIONS and he was practicing his right of free speech to express them. Nothing more, nothing less. He wasn’t stating a fact which requires evidence [squeakysoul] and he openly admitted to being interested in learning several languages other than Spanish. Since he lives in an English speaking community there is no NEED to learn these languages, therefore there is no sense of urgency. To call him racist, lazy, or otherwise, is just silly. It’s just an opinion! And if calling someone those things is a no-no then why do you yourself practice such activity? That’s called hypocrisy.

  • It would definitely help them to learn the language faster…

  • YES! When I went to France, I read, spoke, and heard FRENCH. When in Rome…

  • People need to stop being retarded and accept the fact that there’s many people who speak this language in our country. Why don’t you tell more people to expose more people to this language as well. It’s the second most spoken in the entire country and we are the 5th largest Spanish speaking country in the entire WORLD. We have more spanish speakers in American than there are in many Spanish speaking countries. Over half of the spanish speakers here do actually speak Spanish VERY WELL. If you live in Texas, shut up you should be able to know some Spanish unless you’re actively trying to not learn it. Even Bush knows Spanish fluently.

AMERICA HAS NO “OFFICIAL” LANGUAGE EITHER. No where is it written in stone that we must use English. There are communities in the south where I am from where we only speak cajun french and there is no need to speak or know English at all. It’s not nesecary to even speak English in America. You know what happened to me when I was told I could not speak my mother language, or be exposed to media of my mother language? my skills got really bad. This experience is a typical reaction to the many other I know that have been forced to do this. Yes, it is good to learn in English in the USA and avoiding your natural tongue helps develop skills faster, but to be told to be isolated is a step towards being forced to forget it and that is not right.

I’m not against people learning English, but I hate it when people are told to ignore their culture to learn and conform even FASTER in a society that refuses to accept their large presence and does not reciprocate that action to assimilate their culture to their population.

  • *speak ENGLISH very well. over half speak english very well e.i fluently and with great command.

  • Si!

I refuse to press “1″ for English!

  • I don’t think they should “avoid” it, but they should cut back on it for sure.  My mother learned english because she had to…. now she gets mad when people come into her business expecting her to know Spanish.

IT’S NOT THAT DIFFICULT!  Heck, I know how to speak Spanish but I refuse to cater to someone who’s been living in America for over 3 years and has yet to try.

  • Given how long Arnie’s been in the country, are we to believe that an accent stayed that strong without him ever speaking Austrian again? What a hypocrite.

I think immigrants would be better off telling Schwarzegger to @$$%&^%#$ himself. (Course that’s coming from someone living in Canada, a bilingual country).

  • In general, immigrants should learn English, as it is our main language here.  Watching only their ‘native’ language channels does not help them with their English, for every day use.

My parents are one of those immigrants who have been here for almost 3 decades, and still only speak at a 1st grade level of English, and reading is almost out of the question, except when it comes to driving.  And they live in IL, where they subscribe to the Chinese satellite service.

    Very hard at times…

  • It IS good advice if you just want to learn English, however, if you want to see and hear REAL news, then the Spanish station is where you want to go. They censor nothing.

  • No, reading/watching Spanish media isn’t just a language issue. Those are important media outlets because they connect with their culture, identity, and touch on the issues that matter to them most. It’s like you living in England and being told you shouldn’t watch American tv programs or read/watch American news outlets. You’re going to miss out on so much you want to know.

  • It would help them learn English faster.  However, I guess it’s up to them if that’s a worthwhile tradeoff.

  • hells yea

i hate how 2 of my channels are wasted by spanish gameshows or soaps… when i pay for the cable bill id like to understand my own channels… besides this is a country ruled by the majority… so im deff thingin we should speek english an nothing else.

  • It is the best way to learn another language.. and im sure he knows since hes not from america, though he might have stated his opinion differently.

    Daniel (doubledb)

  • “Given how long Arnie’s been in the country, are we to believe that an accent stayed that strong without him ever speaking Austrian again?”

    Austrians speak German.

  • you can only learn a language in its entirety if you immerse yourself in it. how do you think babies learn to talk?

  • I think its a good idea.

  • “Better off” is a poor choice of words, in my opinion.  They would learn English faster.  And that is still the official language of the United States.  So, if they truly want to assimilate faster into the American culture, they would be able to do that faster by immersing themselves in the English language.  And I do believe that was the Governor’s point, who was a legal, non-English-speaking immigrant himself at one time.

  • If you want to learn any language quickly, it’s smart to immerse yourself in it. I think that’s all this is about. If immigrants want to learn English, they should immerse themselves in it. If I went to a foreign country to live, I would want to immerse myself in that language so I could learn it more quickly.

  • That’s a very good idea for learning the language. They certainly shouldn’t avoid English media. I can understand their desire to see their native tongue in a foreign country. I would feel the same way. But now that they live here, they need to know english.

  • I like his idea. If they want to keep in touch with their Spanish side, that’s fine, but they should probably stop depending on Spanish media. If they’re in this country, they should speak English, so why not watch English news or English programs or read English books? It’s a great way to become familiar with the language.

  • it’s been proven that the emmercian method is the best and fastest way to learn. but i can say i wouldn’t like it if i was told the same thing about another language.

  • i think it’s a personal choice dependent upon how you want to learn/how fast you learn a new language. my father is an immigrant from Mexico and he learned to speak English (he now has barely any accent) from watching American television. it worked for him, but i think it depends on the person. like someone said, as long as there is no law demanding English or banning Spanish media, i think his advice is perfectly legitimate.

I too am American, but, yes, I am also Mexican, and right now, I would not want to be associated with anything that you would deem to represent you.

actually, i have studied(though not learned fluently) ASL, spanish(yes, i learned to speak it while i was VISITING mexico), french, german, japanese  and hawaiian. if i had my way, i would be fluent in hawaiian, japanese, korean, mandarin and cantonese. i have no more desire to learn or be exposed to any more french or german than i do spanish so its not some anti-mexican racist thing.  thanks for playing though. i think its funny how to those who dissagree its automaticly racist.. maybe because im white? that judgement isnt racist at all though is it? as a matter of fact. there are many cultures and languages i would LOVE to experience and learn about. but i resent ANY being forced on me. it’s also funny how you judge(incorrectly) hate, and personnally attack me for voicing this fact(the fact that i resent having a language/culture forced on me) yet i have never personally attacked anyone, in fact commending people who adjust to their new CHOSEN home. i guess thats the difference between us. i believe if you are going to enter someones home(this applies to nations too), even as a guest, you should have the courtesy and respect to adhere to “when in rome…” let alone moving there.

  • No.  I don’t think so.  I do think they should learn the language, but I don’t think they should avoid the Spanish stations. (Well, maybe but not b/c of the reason stated by Arnold).

  • uh…..NO

  • Perhaps at least confronting the English world a bit more.

The vast majority of persons in the USA speak English, it would be a lie to suggest that English skills were optional.

  • Learn the language if you’re in the country, and then watch the Spanish channels when you know English.  I know that it is comforting to watch TV or movies set in your native tongue.  But that can also be used as a crutch as well.

I have an interesting perspective on this, having lived most of my entire life in a non-English speaking country as an American citizen.  The world has turned into a place where you almost have to know at least some English in order to be successful.  That’s not me being prejudicial, it is fact and common knowledge.  And seriously…if you are going to live in the US (where the vast majority speak English) at least make a little effort to learn the language.  Those who don’t appreciate the effort Spanish-speakers are making to learn English are idiots.  It is a hard language to learn as a non-native speaker and can take a VERY long time to master (says the girl who has many friends who have never learned English).

  • it’s probably how he learned. he is an immigrant himself…so it’s not like he’s blasting people in a negative way, and he’s right.

I’m sick of pressing 1 for english. it should automatically be english dammit.

OH, and I’m sick of mexicans burning trash in their backyards and polluting the air in my neighborhood. I swear, my dad called the cops on them six times in the course of a week and a half.

but that’s just cuz they didn’t understand english enough to get it……

bottom line, if I wanna go to your country, I’ll learn your language, but don’t sneer at me for not learning SPANISH in AMERICA.

  • Well, it would make it possible for them to pick up English, if that’s all they hear during the day. But, they shouldn’t abandon Spanish altogether, or else they will lose their culture, which is exactly what happened when the immigrants first came over to America.

  • That sounds fair to me. If Americans stay in foreign countries for extended periods, we are expected to learn the language so as not to offend the locals, which means isolate yourself from your native tongue.

  • Yes omg spanish TV is fucking annoying. If you’re going to move to a different country, at least make attempts to learn the fucking language.

  • I’ve always kind of liked what he says, because he says it, and doesn’t really worry so much about being politically correct.

“Nogales said immigrants need Spanish-language media to stay informed and “function in this society.”"

Which society? I don’t have Spanish-language media and I’m functioning pretty darn well in my society.
I work at a fast-food restaurant in a mall, and I will be more than patient with anyone, Mexican, Asian, Russian, whatever, who obivously doesn’t speak English but is trying their hardest. People who come up to me and ask me *in Spanish* if I speak Spanish get an answer in French.
Immersion is the best way to learn a language, period. Yes, you might have to turn off “Telemundo” and watch CBS News with subtitles and a dictionary, but that’s how it goes; if you want it, you’ll do it. We have created a culture where it’s too easy for immigrants to NOT learn English. That needs to change.
I would also like to point out that English is the most studied second language in the world; French comes second.

amen… except the french part… not that i doubt your facts, i just dont like french. russian would be interesting though

  • No, immigrants would not necessarily be better off avoiding Spanish media.  It is hard enough to pick up a language from watching television, since scripted conversations and ads are often difficult to relate to real life conversation.  Radio is worse, as there are no visual cues to give the language meaning.  If some immigrants want to try to watch English television in order to learn the language better, more power to them.  However, when it comes time to simply kick back and relax, let them do it in the language that means the most to them.

  • Ok, if anyone disagrees with him, then go back and watch Conan the Barbarian. Heck, there is one more movie I think that he made before this one. He had no speaking parts. This guy came from Austria and spoke absolutely no English. I give him high marks for saying what he said. If there is anyone in public view that can say it without it being a racist comment, he is the one that can. He can say, “Sorry, been there, done that, learn the language, I did.”

  • At ,I was thinking that My MuscleMan was being mean, but then he makes sense. His statements can be really turned around and made negative, but it’s a practical thing, I guess, if you want to learn English easier.

Or you can get Rosetta Stone and watch to all the Spanish Soap Opera you want.

  • At first*

    Heh, sorry. *Smashes return key*

  • It depends on what they want. If they want to learn english faster than stop watching those spanish soap operas. but if they still have a lot pride in being from their native area then they should do what they usually do.

  • maybe not, but I DO believe you need to learn the damn language!!

  • We should get rid of the damn spanish channels altogether.

  • I completely agree with the governor. To function in this society, one needs to know English and use it. My grandparents came from Barcelona, Spain. My husband has a Spanish/Mexican-sounding last name, but was born in the US and does not speak Spanish. We receive oodles of marketing gargage in the mail, in Spanish, under his name. America really loves to exploit immigrants. Personally, I find it insulting, although I find most marketing insulting. I try to avoid businesses that make assumptions either about us, because of my husband’s last name, or who post signs/billboards in Spanish – like car lots. (“Bueno! Bonito! Barrato!”) While I am far from patriotic, and not at all anti-immigrant, this is America. And English is the official language.

  • I lived in Nicaragua for five years. I spoke so much spanish that our home was a refuge to just relax the brain and read, listen and communicate in my language. I guess it depends on the person but I learned pretty well without being that drastic.

  • lol, the one and only time I agree with arnold!

  • It’s an advice/suggestion…  the media asked a question on how to improve in English.  It will depend on whether people will take the advice or not.

  • as someone who’s bilingual in chinese, i have to say that i enjoy reading chinese newspapers as much as i enjoy reading the american ones. they focus on completely different things. notice how many social issues concerning minorities are broadcast on the nightly news vs. those about WASPy blond people (except, of course, when minorities are perpetrators of horrible crimes). a minority group going without access to their hyphenated-american culture will be totally cut off. “mixing pot” here? try “blender on puree mode.”

  • “I lived in Nicaragua for five years. I spoke so much spanish that our home was a refuge to just relax the brain and read, listen and communicate in my language. I guess it depends on the person but I learned pretty well without being that drastic.”

the difference being what happened outside your home. i dont think anyone would say “you may never speak or hear spanish again”  the problem is when an entire group of people insists that their whims be met and that the laws not apply to them. no one can claim otherwise, they have anual rallies now, not festivals to share their culture. rallies to say “hey, why should we learn english or follow the immigration laws that apply to everyone else? bend to our will” seriously, its way past time that these illegal immigration rallies turned into deportation festivals. and those of you who want to call me racist for wanting to speak my own language in my own home town can go with them, who is the real racist?

  • To learn the language, yes, but if they do not know English yet, they need to get the news somehow.  Plus, it’s a cultural thing too, and I don’t blame them for missing their language and the different values and ways of life they perhaps had before, which maybe is reflected in the Spanish media.

  • Sure…if they’re not spanish speakers.

Then what would be the point?

  • if their ultimate goal is to learn english, as quickly and efficiently as possible, then yes.

think of the flipside – in order to learn a language, like, say, japanese, you need to emerse yourself in everything from the culture of the japanese people to arts (performance and visual).

that’s what i think anyway. probably why i can’t speak vietnamese !!! hahahaa but exactly why i am semi-fluent in spanish.

  • I don’t understand this view that it has to be one or the other, with on overlap.

I think it is important for immigrants to keep their language and culture alive. It is also important for them to learn the language and culture of their new home. THE TWO ARE POSSIBLE!!! In Chile we often spoke Spanish at home, and English at school. We watched TV in both languages. We became fluent in both languages. Why do people shut this possibility out? Why does it have to always be about all-or-nothing?

  • I find reading these comments so sad. This country was built on immigrants. EVERYONE (unless you’re native american) has ancestors that came from another country, with a different language, heritage, culture, etc. How is it that we’ve become so stuck in our ways and so stubborn that we can’t celebrate our past and our history? Why is it that we’re so afraid of other cultures and languages? Why is it such an insult to so many Americans to have a sign in more than just one language?

How is it that we’ve become so disconnected from the rest of the world, to be this way?

  • Hell No! I’m very sick of these bastards trying to make the Hispanic Community like a plague. Now the “assinator” is attacking the Spanish speaking media. It’s their right to express or delivering information in their native language whatever they can express to get to their people. If you don’t like it, there’s a lot of english Tv channels which I’m sick of since I live in Idaho and Suddenlink won’t give me Univision or Telemundo and I don’t want my spanish language to disappear from my tongue. If they want to speak english, there’s classes for that. Now, I’m learning Japanesse.

  • Sounds like a smart idea, if they want to learn English faster.
