  • Animal Cruelty and Mitt Romney

We have all seen these dog carriers.

And probably most of us have seen one of these animal carriers on the top of a car or in the back of a truck.

Presidential candidate Mitt Romney is coming under fire because of a story he told about traveling with a dog.  He strapped his dog in a carrier to the top of his station wagon on a vacation.

It was against the law in his state and some are calling it animal cruelty.  Here is the link:  Link

Is it animal cruelty to strap your dog in a carrier and let him/her ride on the top of the car?

  • Of course it is!!

  • Wow, first again.  Twice in one day.

  • i don’t know, but that’s pretty f**king funny.

  • why does it bother me when people claim their firstness? ANNOYING!

  • That’s so fucking stupid. Why would you ride with your dog on top of the car, what if the dog fell off? What if it got hot and tired and scared

  • What if the dog really enjoyed it and everything was securely fastened?

  • the issues concerning wind and heat could be considered cruelty.

  • If the carrier was cemented on the car and strapped down with super glue and rope, maybe.

    I’d be too paranoid.

But I bet my Dad would do it…Then again he always surprises me…

  • He lost the PETA vote.

  • What if the dog really enjoyed it and everything was securely fastened? Nice weather….

No, it’s not cruel. Why are we focusing on this. Who cares?

  • OF COURSE. Would he like it if someone did that to him!?? WTH?

  • Sheeeesh, poor doggy!! People are so insensitive.

  • yes!  what if the dog wasn’t on there properly?  the dog could be killed or seriously hurt!  it could be really hot out, or really cold!  dogs are fine when they’re in the car.

    what a jerk-off.

  • I think it is! The dog should have been strapped in the carrier inside the vehicle. (or in a seatbelt harness, like we do with our Tazie)

  • I certainly wouldn’t put an animal on top of my car. It does seem to be somewhat cruel, however.

  • A resounding YES!!

Our “little girl” is always in her seatbelt!

  • RYC: He was a member to my knowlege and donated every week. He just didn’t go regularly. His whole family are members and go every week. I think it is wrong the way they treated them.

  • Only if you feel it’s okay to do the same thing with the kids.

  • Yeah, that just chaps me.  I love my dogs and they ride in the back with my kids.  I also seeing dogs in the back of pick ups running free…grrr!

  • that would be a very bumpy ride it would seem. very uncomfortable and small…

  • That’s not right – as other commenters have noted – what if it fell off? It’s a dog, not cargo.

  • yep. what is wrong with people?

why couldn’t the dog stay in the car and he could tie some non-living luggage to the top? betch he didn’t think of that o.O

  • YES. and you’re just treating the animal like it’s simply luggage. i mean, the animal carrier coud fall off and… oh, i don’t want to think about it.

  • I’ve heard the reason dogs hang their heads out of windows is the oxygen rush is something like a drug high for them. If this is true and the weather wasn’t terrible, then the dog was probably pretty happy. My dog hates the inside of cars but like her kennel – she might actually prefer being on the roof.

  • Ive always wanted to ride on the top of my car. Always.

  • This is a really tricky one. You could argue that the dog is just that, a dog. But you could also argue that the dog was probably scared up there. I would think that dogs have different personalities just like humans. And some dogs, just like humans, would have no problem riding on the top of a car in a carrier.

So I say we leave it up to the dog. Put a carrier up on top of a car and tell the dog to get in. If it does, it probably doesn’t have a single problem with riding on the top of some car. If it doesn’t, you should be fined and do the appropriate amount of jail time.

  • I don’t see the harm in it if it was a nice day. My dog would love it!

Everyone seems to think the carrier would fall off… Is this common? Maybe I’ve just never seen luggage flying off the top of a car or out the back of a truck. Dogs ride in the back of trucks all the time without getting hurt. People generally know whether their dog can handle it or not.

  • If you wanna know Dan, get in one and go on a joyride at freeway speed. After you are done, tell us about it. Make sure the door is facing the wind.

  • What if the dog really enjoyed it and everything was securely fastened?  6/28/2007 1:09 PM esch99

    Yeahhhh. =P

  • YES. animals should not be treated like luggage.

  • Yes, it is animal cruelty. I still don’t get the reference to the Chevy Chase movie.

  • How do we know that the dog didn’t enjoy riding up there? I think the dog probably loved it which mean that it is in no way animal cruelty.

  • When I was a little kid, I wanted my parents to do that with me on family vacation.

  • back of the trucks ok but on top?  thats really stupid and not very safe, since its not safe its pretty cruel.  its illegal here too.

  • No more cruel than doing the same thing in the bed of a pickup.

  • Im glad he’s under fire cuz I don’t want him as our president anyway. LOL

  • Naw, most dogs are pretty retarded. While I’m sure any animal would be scared out of their freaking mind if that happened to them, they were also pretty scared when you first brought them home. Or when you tried to give them a bath for the first time

  • my pets ride in the car with me. I guess it’s whatever you are comfortable with. But I wouldn’t be ok with it personally.

  • Dude if I were a dog I would have SO much fun with taht!

  • Cruel would be leaving the dog at home to drink toilet water and go hungry after eating too much food at once. Not to mention lonely and unwanted.

  • Yes.

  • I’ve got to say I’m surprised by this but then again, alot of times people do stupid things.

You would think that he would know better than to strap a dog to the roof of the car.  That’s WAY too dangerous.  Would you strap your kid to the top of the car?

But before I pass complete judgement I’m going to wait and see if there is further investigation.  In election years it is just like the opposition to get stories like this out there to turn people against a candidate.

  • Not really. Just put the carrier face the other way so that the wind won’t blow in the dog’s face.

  • Yes. What a jerk!

  • Wow, that’s the first time I ever heard someone did that! He must had not think much of his pet safety. Poor dogie. :(

  • it definately is…what a freak

  • it definately is…what a freak

  • I’ve ridden a dog in a crate in the back of a truck for 2 hours before. During a hurricane evacuation. I think 12 hours is quite cruel. Boarding a dog isn’t very expensive.

  • well it beats what my husband always wanted to do-he wanted to tie the leash to the bumper (ala chevy chase) and let them run along beside the car!

  • Ha!  Love the “Vacation” pic along with it………I’d love to strap MY MOTHER on my roof, too….but my dog?  Never!  Never, ever, ever!

RYC:  3?  I don’t think it’s intentional……but is more par for the course.  ….love you Daniel Boone!

  • What MORON would strap their dog’s carrier to the top of a car?!?!?!

  • Only if the dog fell off the truck at a speed greater then 30mph  :)

  • Yes! I think even putting the dog on the back of the truck is dangerous too.

  • Seems a tad cruel and uncomfortable for the poor pet.
But I see a Jack-Ass style stunt in my future with my friends, hehe.

    And how are you, sweetie?

  • Well, depends on weather conditions. But in nice weather, if it was secure and had water, I think my dog would enjoy that ride a heck of a lot more than if he were riding inside the car.

  • Yes that is fucking cruelty! Would you like to be tied in a box on top of your car?

  • haha Great photo on the left hand side!

  • I don’t know but people are always looking for something to tear other people down.

  • I don’t know if it’s actually cruel (if the wind forces the dog against the back of the crate, then it probably is), but it sounds dangerous. I hate to think what would happen if the crate went flying off the roof and onto the road.

  • I was driving back from Wisconsin to Chicago Father’s Day and a dude had a box with wheels attached to the back of his truck. There was a dog in there.  He’d peak outside the door once in a while. I had a huge issue with this. What if the car was slammed in the back of it?  It was like 85 plus humidity that day too.  You bet that guy had his AC on…is it that bad to have his dog in the cab with him?  He was like a beagle size.  Or even in the back part of the truck. If you can’t travel with you animal humanly, leave them at home or better yet, don’t have pets!

  • YES!

    whats next, his kids?

  • Yes. D: The dog’s not like any other suitcase, he’s a living creature.

How would YOU like to get strapped on top of a car?

  • RYC: Yeah, I’m gonna post. I had to write my thank you letter to my supporters first, though.

  • Yeah, that’s pretty cruel.

  • When you’re eventually going to become a god I don’t think it really matters.

At least that’s what the Mormons would probably think.

  • Then again my dogs would probably have a field day.. wind in their fur… yummy bugs flying into the cage..

  • I don’t really know. We love roller coasters. A dog may actually enjoy being on top of a car on a hot day.

Sometimes when we ride roller coasters, we get our feet chopped off.

    Are roller coasters cruel?

  • yes.

the dog, depending on its disposition and breed, would probably love it.  but it’s absolutely unsafe.

abuse is abuse, even if the being being abused is unaware.

  • Quit with the “I’m first” bullshit, people. It is pissing most of us off I am sure.

Yeah putting a dog on the roof of a car is cruel, dammit! I am annoyed right now.

  • people have those in the back of thier trucks all the time. i think it wouldn’t be bad if they had it so the wind wouldn’t whip into it badly and it wasn’t going to fall off. i think it would be better if it was in the back of a truck.

  • YES! Holy shit, how horrible that must be for the poor dog!

Ugh, someone needs to fuck that Mormon up the ass.

  • i think it’s horrible to strap those things on top a car. they can easily come loose & slide around or fall off. lets put him in a cage & strap it to the top of a station wagon. :)

  • I don’t think it’s done intentionally to harm the animal, but I do think that it is very very wrong.

    UNintentional animal cruelty?

  • hey thank you for the sub =)

  • Absolutely not, the only cruelty is if it falls off1

  • it is pretty cruel. you can’t monitor the dog like you could if it’s in the car. plus like everyone said; it could fall off, be affected by heat and wind, ect.

    bad idea.

  • No… but it isn’t very safe.

The guiie Pig in Doctor doolittle liked it.

  • DEFINITELY! Wtf would possess him to do that?! Animals are not inanimate cargo- they are living beings that feel! How do you think it feels to be strapped to the top of a car for a road trip?! Why the fuck couldn’t he put the dog carrier in the car, where it belonged?!

  • I always think animals should be treated like infants, unless the one who straps his dog on top of his car is okay with strapping his kid there along with the dog, its cruelty. Stupid people, as though it will hurt to let the dog be inside the car.

  • well i say

    LOL

seriously though an animal ain’t no accessory like some dam boat.

  • The dog should have been inside of the car. The dog probably could have gotten frostbite. Plus the wind was probably strong enough to shock the hell out of him. Let him ride on top of a car and see how that feels.

  • someone oughta put his ass in a carrier and strap him to the top of a car and hit the highway on a LONG LONG LONG road trip…during the summer, preferably during lovebug season.

  • did the dog have fun?

  • Yes…….it is definitely animal cruelty.  I can’t believe some people.

  • That is sick.  Of course it’s cruel.

  • It’s mean.  It’s one thing to put the dog on the back of a truck.  Most dogs actually like riding on the back of a truck (when they aren’t in a carrier).  You have a car, if you want to take your dog have the decency to put the dog in the car with you or pay to board it while you are on vacation.

  • On top of the car – cruelty.

Inside the car – responsible pet owner

  • Yes. If he doesn’t think it is, then it’s sheer ignorance.

  • Why don’t we put HIM in the carrier on top of the car and drive across the country. I think his point of view might change. Sometimes I wounder what people have done with their brains.

  • No. Its not animal cruelty. Its the only way to go.

The dog cant be in the car with the rest of the family so putting it on the car is the only way left.

  • same thing as strapping a person to a roof of a car.

  • Yes. That’s a dog, not a suitcase. If that fell off in the middle of traffic…. I don’t even want to imagine it.

  • Me ‘n’ Kare (BluBell2) think so…  Poor puppy.

  • If he was driving slowly along a country rode, not going all that far… AND if the window was facing backward, it might have been more fun for his doggy friend than cruel. Iffff however he just strapped his poor dog on top of the truck like a suitcase and drove off along the freeway into the sunset like “whatever, guys. He’s strapped in. We’re good!” then yes, I suppose that would be cruel.

  • Why? Have you seen how they transport chickens going to the slaughter? Or for that matter how they treat animals that are going to one day be veal, boneless chicken, etc? I’m sorry, but it’s hypocritical to say that this cage, which is legal, is wrong when strapped to the top of a car, but those things are not. It’s just wrong.

  • I don’t think so.  Depeneds on the crate.  If it were designed like the one in the picture… I’d assume it were okay if the door were facing the back of the car.

I mean, horses get carted behind cars in cages.

My dog would love it.  But I personally wouldn’t do it.

  • I’d say depends on distance, time of day, temp, and other factors. Long trip in sun probably. But are we going to outlaw dogs in the back of pickups?

  • Ohnoes.

Did the dog fall off?  No?  Then quit crying about it.  Dogs also stick their heads out the windows of cars.  What if they jumped out?  It’d definitely be the work of some cruel person, I’m sure.

Also, quit talking like you know it was hot and windy and whatever.  If the cage part of it wasn’t facing the wind and if the top was opaque, it probably wouldn’t be that big of a deal.

  • definitely.

it’s not a kayak, it’s your pet, moron.

  • Umm…yes…How would you like 80mph wind in your face?

  • Maybe I’ll put you in a tiny cage with bowls full of food and water attatched to the doors ( garuteed to spill or you money back!) and get on the highway and drive 80 mph.

Maybe I’ll also get in a car crash to show you more risk there is with this stupid shit.

Then, if you survive the crash and don’t have a heart attack, we’ll talk about whether or not what I did was cruel.

    dumbass animal abusers.
