  • Phone Calls

When you call someone’s house in the morning and they don’t answer, you should let it ring 20 times.

    A basic modern telephone

Chances are they really are not sleeping and they are waiting for your call.  If you are selling something, you should let it ring more.  Because they really want your call because chances are they really want your product.

What is the earliest you should call in the morning?

  • Oral Sex and Age of Consent

Genarlow Wilson is in prison for having oral sex with a 15-year-old girl.

    vert.genarlow.wilson.ap.jpg

He was 17-years-old when he had oral sex with the girl.  Under Georgia’s law at the time, he was a child molester even though the oral sex was consensual.  He was sentenced to 10 years in prison.  He has served 2 years in prison since his conviction.

Today a federal judge reduced his sentence.  The Georgia Attorney General immediately blocked the release of Wilson by appealing the decision of the federal judge.  Here is the link:  Link

There are so many of these cases out there that cause this issue to come to the nation’s attention.  Everyone wants to protect children from child molesters.  And yet these are both kids that were underage at the time the oral sex took place.

There needs to be a rule for age difference to set a boundary.  Under this rule, a whole lot of us were molested in high school.

What is an acceptable age difference for kids to legally have sex while they are both minors?

  • Changing Your Life Around

I mentioned a quote from Paris Hilton in my photoblog this morning.

    Photo

Paris Hilton did an interview with Barbara Walters and said that she had changed in prison.  Here is the quote:  “I’m not the same person I was,” she said. “I used to act dumb. It was an act. I am 26 years old, and that act is no longer cute. It is not who I am, nor do I want to be that person for the young girls who looked up to me. I know now that I can make a difference, that I have the power to do that. I have been thinking that I want to do different things when I am out of here. I have become much more spiritual. God has given me this new chance.”  Here is the link:  Link

In the comment section of my photoblog, a few people appeared skeptical that a person could make a life change in just a few short days.

Can a person make a life change in just a few days?

  • The N-Word and the Dictionary

A friend of mine told me today that she was told that the editors of Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary had finally decided to make a change to the word “n*****” on their online dictionary.

Originally, members of the NAACP wanted the word “n*****” removed from the dictionary.  Merriam-Webster refused to take the word out because it was an actual word.  Here is the link:  Link

Then the NAACP objected to the definition of the word.  The current definition that is listed under the word “n*****” is “a black person.”  Here is the link to the current definition:  Link

The NAACP wanted the definition to be changed to “a racial slur.”  The editors of Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary said that the reason that the first definition of the word was “a black person” was because they always had a policy of putting the oldest definition first.  So there was a time and a place when the n-word did mean “a black person.”

Should the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary adjust its definition of the n-word to be more sensitive to minorities?

  • Upside Down Roller Coaster

As I mentioned in my photoblog, 12 people got stuck on an upside down roller coaster in Arkansas.

X-Coaster, stranded riders, Magic Springs, June 10, 2007

A power outage shut down the ride and caught the people upside down for 30 minutes 150 feet above the ground.  Firefighters had to rescue them using a ladder.

I read a funny quote from one of the people who was caught upside down for 30 minutes:  “I love the amusement park, but I will never get on the X-Coaster again.”  Here is the link:  Link

If you had been caught upside down for 30 minutes on a roller coaster, do you think you would ever ride a roller coaster again?

  • Capital Punishment

A few recent studies indicate that capital punishment actually acts as a deterrent to murder.

    Photo

Even though momentum appears to have shifted away from capital punishment, it is believed that as many as 3 to 18 lives can be saved for every convicted killer that would be executed.  Here is the link:  Link

If you were convinced that executing murderers would stop people from being killed, would you support capital punishment?

  • Vote

Last post:  “I am one of those pro-life Republicans.  I vote for the president based heavily on whether he is pro-life.”

Is it narrow-minded to vote for a president based “heavily” on one issue?

  • President Bush

I voted for President Bush twice.  I have voted Republican my whole adult life.

    Photo

I am one of those pro-life Republicans.  I vote for the president based heavily on whether he is pro-life.  I supported the president throughout this war on terror.  We were either with him or against him.  I decided to be with him.

I always have said, “I voted for President Bush twice and I would vote for him again if he was running today.”  It really didn’t matter because he wasn’t running again.  But as of the last few months, I have changed my mind.  I don’t think I would vote for the president again.

I am not trying to be critical of the president when I say it is time for someone new to come in and be president.  Sometimes I wonder if it is just the nature of a two term president.  At the end of the Clinton administration a term was coined “Clinton fatigue.”  People were sick of hearing of President Bill Clinton.  They were sick of the scandal.

Maybe that is my problem now.  Maybe I have president “Bush fatigue.”  Maybe it is just time for a change.  I am excited about some of the new options out there.  I realize that President Bush served in a difficult time.  You sometimes really can’t judge a president until 20-30 years after he served.  Maybe someday we will look at President Bush and think about what a great job he did.

But it just appears to me that he is arrogant in his approach.

  • Baby Photos

I was just reading an article about parents who post photos of their children online.

The article told a story of a woman who typed in her daughter’s name on a search engine.  She had a bunch of links come up with her daughter’s image.  The concern didn’t appear to be so much for safety.  The focus of the article was privacy.

The author of the article wrote about the concern some parents have over whether to post their child’s photo on the internet before the child is old enough to consent to the photo being placed online.  Here is the link:  Link

Should a parent post a photo of their child online before the child is old enough to give his/her consent?
