Public Nudity
You can now walk through Brattleboro, Vermont nude. The city was clothing optional until it had a temporary ban recently. The town board voted 3-2 to remove the ban and allow public nudity again.
One of the board members said, “it wasn’t up to the town to restrict anyone’s right to dress or undress.” Here is the link: Link
Do you think it is up to a town to restrict someone’s right to dress or undress?

I guess if people don’t like it, they can move….
yes.
Sure, I think the town can regulate public decency issues such as this.
Oh, that’s awesome. Getting over the taboo of nudity is something I wish Americans were more like Europeans in. What’s really so evil about not wearing clothes anyway? Probably a little chilly, but if that’s your thing
Oh yea, We don’t want to traumatic the little eyes… There are some of us who like to shield our kids’ innocent bit longer than they would have allowed..
hey hey! my kinda town! j/k that’s a little creepy.
Ha ha. Wow, I dunno, but what about indecent exposure? I guess they wouldn’t have that law, would they?
yes
Sure.
you totally star your own posts
I’m naked right now.
Hahaha… I think it’s fine for a town to regulate such things (or not regulate them) if they so choose. No big deal – most people won’t be caught dead walking around nude even if it’s legal, and many who do want to walk around naked tend to do so even if it is illegal.
lol.
i really wouldn’t want to live in a town that allowed nudity like that thank-you-very-much
depends on her weight.
LOL @ AristotleForDummies…
That’s what governments do – make laws for the common good. Brattleboro is a gorgeous town – very artsy in a hippy kinda way. I’m not surprised about this, but glad when we stopped there a couple of years ago we didn’t see any naked old hippies. :shudders:
wow. that’s disgusting. what about the kids in that town? you might as well remove any laws banning porn and whatnot, cause it’s all right outside their front door anyway.
I guess that would kind of make sense…
There is certainly a societal sense of obscenity and vaugely where the line for free expression should be set. A common consensus can certainly be arrived to at the city level (as well as county or state). On this basis: Yes, it may be up to the town to decide on nudity ordinances.
i think its awesome that theres a town that has optional clothing
i wouldnt want the entire country to be like that
but id probably live there knowing i didnt have to wear clothes =D
I think that’s a wonderful, wonderful thing. Countryangel926, how is it pornographic? The law didn’t say people could go and have sex in the streets. There is nothing pornographic about the body. And I would move there, kids and all. I think it would be good for them to grow up in an environment so comfortable with the human anatomy. I think it’s really sad that people think it’s disgusting.
In public? Sure.
Thats pretty weird
No.
If they’re gonna ban nudity, what’s next?
Ban sagging pants?
It’s like a dress code at school or something.
I don’t think the human body is disgusting, but I do think it is wise to cover up. I’m guessing that within 6 months, the town will be filled with those who have sexual addictions, pornography addictions, etc. I guess if that is what they want for their town, go for it. Personally, I’d rather not experience most people in the nude.
Vermont . . . the nekkid state!
The very last thing I want to see when I get morning coffee or whatever is some incredibly vastly overweight hairy man striding over and sitting down next to me, and then him actually trying to make conversation. Sure, I don’t think there should be any laws against it, but thank God for morality and common decency. I’m pretty sure not too many people will take up that freedom.

I don’t know. Still, you wouldn’t think you’d need a law, and I’m sure life in Brattleboro will pretty much go on the same as always despite legal nudity. After all, it’s pretty cold in Vermont for much of the year.
Sweet Jesus! I LOVE the United States!
and i say that without sarcasm.
I love this town, they get to act like a magnet and attract all the freaks.
in other news, you can also walk around my house naked….
There is a moral code for decency. People should follow it or stick to nudist colonies.
and it’s true, Dan *does* star his own posts.
Uhh…sorta.
I don’t really want to see an old man penis wagging down the street in my neighborhood.
ew.
lol
umm… I don’t want to see other people naked thank you very much.
no…i think it kinda cool…the idea of waking up, taking a shower, dropping the towel and heading out the door. XD. haha. now…parents…theyre the ones that tell you if you can walk around naked or not.
adam and eve anyone?
yes, but not through the barrel of a gun
nope. I wish we were clothing optional…
I think that’s kind of cool.
The human body is supposed to be beautiful, guys.
And to all the people saying this is like porn, it isn’t.
And to all the people worrying about kids: What a great way to teach them that the body isn’t somthing to be ashamed of.
i don’t think i’ll be visiting there anytime soon
This is the funniest thing I heard today, so far. = )
I really can’t decide my opinion about this issue though. I think nudity shouldn’t be banned as long as the naked person is not trying to be provocative with it. I mean, back in the days when humans still lived in caves, people went around naked all the time.
Well since people today, especially the ones that would want to wander around downtown nude, have lost all sense of decentcy and common sense, as well as they are easily offended and want to sue if they feel discriminated against, I think it’d just be easier on everyone’s eyes if we were all required to keep our clothes on.
Whatever their decision may be, it SHOULD be up to the town.
hahaha RANDOM! And yet, funny. lol…I don’t really know if that is a city’s right or not…kinda weird..
In Biblical times a lot of people had no cloths, no problem. The evil is in looking on a nudity.
It has got to be freak’n cold in the winter. I have been there. I never saw one naked person.
See ya
Yeah.
yes
Banning nudity is oppression. That’s why I’m taking off my clothes right now to fight the man.
ah – there’s the america our forefathers sacrificed for….
haha.
some people should be NOT allowed to be nude out side legally
sweet
That really is probably the duty of the public to harass them if they don’t want to see it.
If there’s no decency laws in regards to public nudity…does that mean there’s no law on public sex? Cause if you’re walking around…and you find someone attractive…they’re gonna know about it quickly…
I am happy they decided to remove that ban, it means that town is on my list of travel destinations. I want to see what kind of mental anguish my nudity can cause on a population.
Amazing that people forget we started off without clothes in the Garden of Eden. Even then, after they sinned, God provided them with clothing. Reasons for it all. Not against it. Not for it. As long as no one is telling me what to do, then it would be my choice whether to live there or not, and whether to participate or not. I do think people need to become more comfortable, but even saying that, I stop and think about the grocery line, or standing in line at the bank. What about filling your car with gasoline? Would you sit on the park bench right after someone had sat there with no clothes on? In this day and age?! I don’t think so.
Also noting that the first storm has passed. Next one on its way later tonight. – R
Uhm, yes.
Begging the nudists pardon, but maybe not everyone wants to see you’re … bumper.
I don’t give a damn- wear what you want.
I won’t be visiting, but it sounds interesting.
Yes, there are plenty of people I definitely wouldn’t want to see naked. On the other hand, the band would cut down on traffic accidents when the lawnmower girl is out.
*ban*
yeah.
people should not be allowed to walk around a community nude
They shouldn’t. There should at least be one place in America you can go nude…
If vermont is so screwed up they need to write down that they should wear clothes in public, they should lose their statehood. D human body is a thing to b admired n respected. Shown w a lil tact. Except Scarlett Johanssen, she should not b allowed to buy clothes.
i have a ? for all the ppl who are pro nudity saying its great to teach the kids about the glorious wonders of the human body. How much walking around in the nude do you an ur spouse do in front of your kids
I find that rather hilarious…….I found a law for a town i used to live in that said it was illegal to put an Ice Cream cone in your pocket……..there are a ton of old funny laws that haven’t been updated and changed.
not really.
it is bad for a town to restict people from being nude
that’s disturbing.
*shudders* I personally would not like to be in a town where people walk around naked. So often it’s those that really shouldn’t be naked that end up wandering around naked.
I guess a nude town is kind of like a nude beach though. If you know it’s a nude town you don’t have to go there. There are some people who like it, and it’s for them. However, I’m not that person.
some people are so shallow…i think it should really depend on how pretty or in shape the nude people are…..i guess you could get a ticket for being nude and ugly in public…..just like they shouldn’t sell convertible cars to ugly people….(hey i live in florida, what do you expect…)

This shows a fundamental misunderstanding that we have in America. People assume that everyone has the right to do anything that they want until the government intervenes. Well, I hate to burst your bubble, but you don’t. You don’t have the right to walk around nude in public (do as you will in private). The city has no right to say that their people can. This is just one more thing that people are having to ban that shouldn’t be banned in the first place. Some might say that I’m being old fashioned; after all, standards of dress fluctuate. That’s true, and as long as the standards are reasonable and don’t violate basic modesty then let them fluctuate! Yet even the cultures with the most revealing dress expectations still insist that clothing be worn. I once heard a woman who had lived with a tribe in the south Pacific talking about a man there. Like all the men he only wore a vine around his waist. When she asked why he wore the vine he responded in shock, “You don’t want me to go around naked, do you?” It’s just part of human nature. Now put some pants on, for crying out loud!
By “shouldn’t be banned in the first place” I mean it should be understood to be not allowed without a law having to be written to clarify that point. Sorry for the confusion.
i think everyoneshould walk around naked, in that town its probably awkward because you have people wearing clothes and you have others naked.
I agree with hello_insanity.
Oh, that’s awesome. Getting over the taboo of nudity is something I wish Americans were more like Europeans in. What’s really so evil about not wearing clothes anyway? Probably a little chilly, but if that’s your thing
And with ComaWhiteX.

Yeah, basically it should be. What about laws for indecent exposure and such? I wouldn’t want my children growing up in a town where people could walk about completely uncovered! Where is the modesty?
Its not porn exactly, but that’s a bit too close for comfort.
Oh yeah, what happens if a man with no self-control (which is a lot of men) sees an attractive woman walking down the street? HELLO! There are going to be children present! Everyone will easily see what he’s thinking about. And what about the children? Are the allowed to walk about naked? Big draw for pedophiles and child porn addicts, don’t you think?
Sure, anatomy is great and kids should learn about it, but they shouldn’t learn about it as they’re walking down the street.
Okay, I’m thinking a little more on a hygenic level here. I don’t think I would want to sit down on any park benches or anything if people are walking around naked and possibly sitting on them. I’m sorry, but the human body secretes some pretty yucky things in the nether regions that I really don’t care to share with my neighbor thank you very much! Ugh! At least when everyone is wearing clothing then there’s a barrier there. Also there was mention of comparing Europe’s lack of issues with nudity to this situation, but even then you usually don’t hear about people walking the public streets nude…it’s usually done in a confined venue such as a specific beach, and then is labeled as such. I certinaly hope that they put signs up throughout the town warning any who might wander in what they are in for!!!!
I also agree with Fiery Dragonfly….this could be dangerous with pedophiles or just sexual deviants in general wondering around. It runs the risk of being a very dangerous situation!
Really! American’s need to get over their fear of nudity! It is a thing of beauty – oh – wait – we are taking the most obese nation on earth here so maybe not. Maybe it should be mandated that you all keep your clothing on.
0_o isn’t that Kennedy country? The horror0_0
I think the town can control it, and should. I know I wouldn’t want to be walking down the street with my 9 year old daughter and see some naked guy jogging by!
Well its mostly just digustingly ugly old people who go around nude anyway. But if thats floats their boat .. or their .. well, ya know, let ‘em.
Yes! When was it ok to walk naked in a public place? Those things should not illegal at least for the kids sake.
Hmm, how libertarian am I? I guess this is a pretty blurry issue. Since it’s public, I tend to think a certain amount of decency should be enforced.
Why do people think they can impose rules on situations that never affect them. How many of you are residents of Brattleboro?
Only if there are ugly people in said town.
ugh that’s horrible.. gross… what about the people who DON’T WANT TO BE subjected to it….
they should block sections off for it if that’s the case so people know where NOT to go….
