Personally, my first though is Asian. I love Asian facial features, and would love to speak Japanese or Chinese (or both!). However, after deliberation, I’ve decided it’d be best to be Hispanic. Not only would I prove to others that people of any race can achieve whatever they set their mind to, but I would also “win one over” on the poor white and Asian suckers who are rejected from school and jobs based on their race. Finally, Spanish is the most useful second language in the United States.

I agree with your observation of “Asian” as a popular response. My point was that there are so little options that one or two superficial reasons are enough to tudge people’s whim towards that answer. I can’t speak for everyone, and certainly I have a different perspective on it than most people (I’m Asian myself).
Amongst other things, Asian subculture has been taken with positive connotation: Food (Sushi, Korean bbq), media (anime!, Crouchign Tiger, Hidden Dragon). Within the general American population, Asians in general seems to have done fairly well economically and academically. Without having deeper reasons or understanding these influences more comprehensively, these factors are enough to lightly persaude people. But of course, I’m just speculating here.

when I was in middle school and early high school I used to get teased so much about my “ethnicity” or whatever the hell you’d like to call it.. sadly it got to the point where I LOATHED my skin color and wanted nothing more than to be white.. haha I live in the suburbs and went to a private school.. there weren’t many other brown or filipino people there, but I’ve gotten over that already

My vision of Dan’s blog is it as a place for not only a place for the expression of opinions, but the intermingling of views and ideas. Given the impersonal nature of the xanga and the internet the most we have to go on are your expressions here and on your xanga. It would be unreasonable for there to be a de facto gag order against commentary on any held positions until that person is known personally and intimately– that would be best; but given the circumstances, it’s simply unpractical.
I meant my blip as a “oh, by the way this is what I think” kind of response, and less so as a pointed disagreement.

It is funny to see how Asians like caucasian features and caucasians like asian features. Most of the models are freakin caucasians in Asia when you hardly see any on the streets. I want to be a eurasian. They seem to be high in demand around the world right now.

Huginn, I know there are only a few different races, when viewed so broadly (as most of Dan’s readers have). However, I argue that there is a significantly greater number of people who reply “Asian,” or some variant thereof, than any other race or racial group. Do you disagree?
I agree with your observation of “Asian” as a popular response. My point was that there are so little options that one or two superficial reasons are enough to tudge people’s whim towards that answer. I can’t speak for everyone, and certainly I have a different perspective on it than most people (I’m Asian myself).
Amongst other things, Asian subculture has been taken with positive connotation: Food (Sushi, Korean bbq), media (anime!, Crouchign Tiger, Hidden Dragon). Within the general American population, Asians in general seems to have done fairly well economically and academically. Without having deeper reasons or understanding these influences more comprehensively, these factors are enough to lightly persaude people. But of course, I’m just speculating here.

Native American if Inuit if considered Native American, so I could get into any frickin school I want and still look the same. I’m Asian, and I don’t get the same advantage that other minorities do for being a minority, even if we have the same stupid grades! Plus I’d still have some exotic cultural background.

Oye…everyone wants to be Asian. So I just want to brag and say that I’m part Japanese, part Spanish, and part Palauan (we originated from Polynesia, Melanesia, and Indonesia). How cool is that? So I think I’ll keep my chop suey race.
