Handgun Control
In 1997, the UK banned handguns. In the last 10 years, crimes using handguns has doubled to 4,671. The UK is considered to have the toughest anti-gun laws in world. Yet, firearm use can continued to rise.

Can you ever really ban guns?

No.
It’s like Prohibition, you can ban them, but when you down an underground culture will spawn to continue and in most cases increase the supply and usage of the banned article. Just human nature to rebel againist someone or thing telling us we can or can’t do something I suppose.
Nope…banning guns is impossible. And stupid…and it puts all the guns in the hands of either criminals, or the government, which can be the same thing if the government becomes tyrannical.
You outlaw guns, then only outlaws will have guns!
Guns don’t kill people, people kill people!
-David
Fuck no… Wait, the government can ban whatever they want if they can provide a legitimate reason. Or say there is a legitimate reason. Also, add in what Mistic99 said.
Of course you can. You just can’t get rid of them.
Direshark
This is the second time I had to correct someone
Guns don’t kill people. People don’t kill people.
Gunstarhero kills people… With nonsense!
You can ban them yes. Will it stop people from having guns? Doubtful.
RYC: He’s the creator of Buffy, Angel, and Firefly. Also, wrote for Roseanne before he created his own shows.
Ban but not get rid of..like prohibition…exactly.
banning things only creates uncontrollable black-markets
You can ban guns. But they’ll still be here. They just find new ways of hiding them.
Not really.. There is proof that you can ban them but it is still around rising in the black market..
I also have a personal theory that if handguns were widely accepted, carried and trained with violent crime might go down as well as armed robbery. As a criminal, you would think twice about trying to jack grandma if there was a chance she was packing.
But the counter argument would be wide spread availability would lead to more frequent usage by individuals who are either unbalanced, suicidal, or just plain ignorant. Momentary anger could always be more deadly in those cases.
So back to square one and guns being readily available to only those that use them, criminals and law enforcement.
no…
If we didn’t have guns, we’d just go back to stabbing each other.
Can you ever really ban anything?
If something is banned, people must KNOW it’s banned.
And so long as people know OF IT it’s still aroud. . .if only the idea is in their mind.
If we want to get rid of something entirely, we can’t even have laws saying it’s bad. We just need to pull a George Orwell 1984 and punish people when they do something wrong, though there’s no law against such and such.
No. Americans love their guns.
No. Even if their production were officially banned worldwide, there would still be clandestine manufacturers. The best you hope to do is try to limit their easy availability, and I’m not sure that would be economically or politically feasible.
*could hope
Without handguns, what will I shoot people with???
I only use knives to kill women.
Yes, only if you execute anyone who is associated with guns and their family and friends.
We already know the answer.
No, we can’t.
Nope, you can’t.
You can try. Can you ban nudity?
It’s a fundamental right for this country’s citizens to keep and bear arms. If you ban guns, you open some doors you can never close.
No. Nothing can ever be banned.
Does banning anything ever make it go away?
No. and we shouldn’t! Why take guns away from law-abiding citizens so that they can’t protect themselves or their families?
Not in this country, no. but I guess if you try reallyreallyreallyreally hard you could….
then again, I’m against banning guns.
What about Japan? They still have a gun ban from World War 2 or something like that
Why ban guns? It’s only a tool.
More guns are used in self-defense than are used to commit crimes.
More people die each year in vehicle related deaths, yet getting a drivers license is easier than buying a gun. Any teenager can get a drivers license.
More people die each year in alchohol related deaths, yet buying a case of beer is easier than buying a gun.
More people die each year in pools, ponds, lakes, and oceans, yet swimming is not against the law.
More people die each year from heart attacks and other issues related to being overwheight, yet buffets have not been closed down. In fact, more open each year.
Here’s a novel concept: punish the criminals and not the law abiding citizen. Criminals have more rights than the law abiding citizens do.
When crime is 100% eradicated, than I will consider giving up my guns.
Washington DC, our nations capital, is effectively a ‘gun free zone’ as it is illegal to own or possess a gun in the city limits, yet it has the highest gun-related violent crime and gun-related murder rate in the nation. Why? Because the citizens, and this makes me chuckle, in our nations capitol, are not ‘allowed’ to defend themselves. I bet the founding fathers are turning over in their graves.
Many people tell me that they do not own guns because they have children. Me, I own and carry a gun because I do have children. I am responsible for their safety and security. Not the government. Not the police.
In fact, police will need to be called to respond. A law abiding citizen can act immediately and not have to be another death statistic.
Here’s another novel concept folks: Since we know criminals (really bad people who like to rape, kill, steal, burn, maime, molest children, and any other bad thing you can think of) exist and the government has proved over and over again that it cannot protect everyone (infact, you cannot sue a police department for failing to protect because it against every state law to have the expectation of protection), than we should take some responsibility for our own safety.
I don’t expect the police to be on every corner. Let’s face it, their in the bad parts of town most of the time anyway.
When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will carry guns.
Yes. At least it seems to me that it works well here.
Yes you can ban them. No it will not get rid of them. It makes some people want them more. Ban alcohol, more people want it. Ban cigarettes, more people will want them. If something is forbidden it makes it all the more attractive.
No…
If you banned guns how would your children get shot?
Fucking liberals never think of that.
Idiots.
what about the blind ones?
Any teenager can get a drivers license.
No and why would you want to? The types of people who use them for criminal activity will obtain them anyway while law-abiding citizens are deprived of a means of self-defense.
Never. Its not the guns that hurt people, its the people using the guns.
NO! Banning guns only bans legal guns purchased by people who obey the law. Most criminals buy their’s off the street. Haven’t I said this before?
No. Plus they still have lots of stabbings, and you can’t outlaw knives.
Ghetto Dad said it all. I do wish to add that several cases, such as Warren vs. DC have found that:
“courts have without exception concluded that when a municipality or other governmental entity undertakes to furnish police services, it assumes a duty only to the public at large and not to individual members of the community” ergo, cops protect your community, not you. sites:

No. Nor should they.
no, not in a world where they exsist. look at prohibition movements… but i would rather live in a country that protects it’s citizens by attempting to ban guns than a society that allows anyone they deemed sane have one.
but i thought they were not banned in the UK… i thought they just made regulations so strict that it was damn near impossible to get one.
nope!
Just curious Dan, but did you read the article about teenagers in London forming gangs and shooting other youths? It was a really interesting article and cited several reasons for Briton’s newly emerging gang society. They cited American culture, access to Middle Eastern imports, and black markets as reasons for the increase in deaths and gangs over the past five years.
Not very well. The cliché works in this situation. Yet there isn’t any nation-state brave enough to train and arm their entire population, so we won’t know if the opposite will work either…
Interesting font change.
No
And it’s for that reason I don’t think there’s a point in banning them. People who want them will find them.
It is fair to note that the US’s gun related death toll in 2001 was 29,573. Post both sides when you are going to post something like this.
apparently you can ban them
but you cant make people stop
nah it just rases there value…
No. guns dont kill people; people kill people. Guns a very very controlled in China and Japan……. people just develope skills of killing with additional weapons; take swords as an example.
PS- You should suggest this question to Xanga Questions?
You can ban anything you want.
Will it work.
Absolutely not.
Banning handguns is probably one of the stupidest, most self-defeating ideas ever contrived by man.
No, if you ban guns only bad people would have them
No, and I wouldn’t want to.
you can ban whatever the hell you want.
you just cant enforce it.
Let’s hope not.
the world just needs guns
The better question is should they be banned.
No.
no. that’s why the only form of gun control that I will endorse is using both hands.
lol, nope! YAY guns!!
No…….even if a country tries, criminals don’t care about breaking laws and will still get guns.
You can’t really ban anything. People will always figure out a way to get around it.
I love the proof of how stupid the extremely strict gun laws are the UK has proven to be. I just don’t understand why it is that so many people cannot learn from the failures of other countries with the same legislation.
I lived in a state where I had to drive 25 miles to a remote Sheriff’s office. They would take the information on me and the serial number of the handgun I wanted to purchase. I paid a fee, then I had to return three days later to pick up the permit to purchase. All that crap sure reduced the number of handguns I purchased! I know….I know….the crooks either stole them or bought them on the street. pfffffffffffffffffffffffffffffft
I find it funny that, when you posted about the VT shootings, everyone was like “OMG! Maybe we need stricter gun control!” Now they are all like, “OMG! Gun control doesn’t actually work after all!” A criminal is not going to care that getting a gun on the black market is illegal…
The only people that anti-gun laws help are the criminals. Criminals don’t give a damn about the law, they’re going to get guns no matter what. The only difference then is that the good, law-abiding citizens who aren’t going to kill anyone anyway get walked all over.
Banning guns in a place where the access is relatively easy is impossible. The only to really ban guns is to stop the production of them altogether. Kind of a uphill battle there, though.
’nuff said….
You can ban guns, but you can not completely get rid of them.
If in the UK we had not banned guns, the amount of crimes involving them would be even higher than it is today.
Yeah… let’s just throw the entire constitution out of the window while we’re at it…
You can ban guns, but it makes the black market bigger.
Banning guns is a stupid idea anyway. How will the innocents protect themselves?
They tried that in Canada. People were just going down the US to get new ones. Unless guns all over the world are banned and incinerated, people will just continue to be illegal. I mean, drugs are illegal and they’ve been rising for more than 10 years. Seriously, you really think if you tell someone “no don’t do that” they’re going to listen? These people were probably those unruly children that never listened then, why are they going to now?
Banning guns is a waste of time. You’re treating a symptom of a sick society, like trying to put a band aid on a gushing wound. The blood will still find its way around the band aid.
You need to instead spend resources on curing the society of the sickness.
It’s like Prohibition, you can ban them, but when you down an underground culture will spawn to continue and in most cases increase the supply and usage of the banned article. Just human nature to rebel againist someone or thing telling us we can or can’t do something I suppose.—Mistic99
Exactly!
Officially, yes you can ban guns. We’ve also banned recreational drugs, and obviously no one uses them.
about as effective as banning alcohol in prohibition…short of a house to house search, you can’t control much of anything that’s been legal at some time…you could make the penalties prohibitive, but people committing crimes aren’t really prone to thinking through the whole penalty issue anyway…the rationale is that penalties only apply if you get caught and they wouldn’t do it if they thought they were going to get caught…
No you can’t ban guns. The law abiding citizens will obey the ban. The criminals will continue to be criminals and disobey the ban laws. The law abiding citizens are left without a gun to protect themselves. Fuck that shit! Banning guns is not the answer. Tougher laws when violent crimes are committed is the answer. Bring back the public hangings! How about the guillotine!
I sure hope we can permanently ban guns. They kill too many innocent people each second. They represent a dark side of human nature.
If bannin worked, we could just ban crime of any kind n b done w it. Guns will only lose strength if sum better killin product comes along. Much like swords lost ground to d guns.
Yeah you can ban them but will the ban be effective, that is the question.
it works in Singapore
Chris Rock’s sagacious thought about handguns.
“l think all bullets should cost $. $ for a bullet. You know why? ‘Cause if a bullet costs $
there’d be no more innocent bystanders. That’d be it. Every time someone gets shot, people will
be like, ”Damn, he must have did something. ”Shit, they put $ worth of bullets in his ass.” People would think before they killed somebody, if a bullet cost $. ”Man, l would blow your fucking head off, if l could afford it. ”l’m gonna get me another job, l’m gonna start saving some money… ”and you’re a dead man. ‘You better hope l can’t get no bullets on layaway.” So even if you get shot by a stray bullet… you won’t have to go to no doctor to get it taken out. Whoever shot you would take their bullet back.’l believe you got my property.” That’s right, man.
Man’s got a point.
The only reason the Government would try to outlaw hand guns is so some pompous blow-hard senator will “feel good” about himself.
Just look at the “Assault Rifle” ban of a few years ago, It expired. Time limit???????
Guns; knives; pointy sicks; gasoline and matches.
Ban all you want. Then, when everyone is disarmed… you enslave them and make them pay taxes. (Oh, wait…)
Oh.. and if I can’t have my gun, then I want driver’s licenses to incorporate an IQ test, so dumb people can’t be on the road.
No law abiding citizens need to have the right to protect themselves. In cities where concealed carry permits by trained citizens were allowed violent crime went down.
I myself know of 2 woemen who “carry.” A rapist in my state of Arkansas thinks twice about attacking women in some of our cities because he doesn’t know if he will encounter a woman who will put 2 well placed shots between his eyes.
GUN CONTROL, Definition: hitting your target with the first shot!
You can ban them, but you can’t smite their existence from the earth. People will find a way to get them. Gun laws only keep guns out of law abiding citizens hands. Instead of banning, maybe a background check should be mandatory before purchase. I think that would keep criminals from getting guns from legal sources anyway. the underground can never be destroyed.
Nope. I think the more restrictions you have on something, the more it’s going to be handled and used, just without your knowledge.
You can ban them, but they will still be around. Legally, you shouldn’t be able to ban them in the U.S. though. And people shouldn’t be surprised when they are made harder to obtain legally that crime goes up.
If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.If you know how to do it, you can make a one shot shot gun out of pipe. Zip guns can be made using parts from a car door and the barrel can be made using a car radio antenna.
Sure, you can ban guns. Just like you can ban crime….
YEA IF YOU GO A SHOT SOMEONE!
well of course you can ban them. the real question is after you ban them can you make sure that there arent any leftover hanging about in the back of a closet somewhere?
I think that the increase in the amount of crime can be attributed to the fact that simply having one is a crime. When my house gets raided for drug use, or the cops come by to write me a disturbance ticket for my radio being to loud, Whoops! A gun. Now I’ve committed a gun related crime, simply because they saw it. They still have a lower percentage of gun related deaths than we do. The law is working
