  • Proofread

I was reading an article where someone was expressing their disappointment with what is happening with the English language.  One of the questions she asked was “Are there no proofreaders anymore?”  She mentioned that the computer spell check only catches so many errors.  So people need to proofread.

Do you proofread your entries before you hit submit or do you just hit spell check?

  • I will often do a quick proofread.

  • I do read my entries before I post them and I sometimes edit them once or twice even after I’ve clicked submit. Sometimes even then I find errors later on. I may not be anal enough to pull off the error free entry.

  • I can’t wait for the Trun’s response!

  • rofl no, I don’t proof read papers

    I don’t have the time.

    I’m a bad bad kid.

  • I have always proofread while I write (like I’ll write a sentence or paragraph and read back over it), but it is not common that I go back at the end and do a final proofreading (unless it is a final term-paper or something equally important).

  • I proof my entries

  • most of the time. just for spelling errors though. the grammar stay a complete mystery to me. lol

  • I proof read but it doesn’t help much. lol

  • I let you guys whine at me so I know if I made a mistake.

  • I’m a writer, online and offline, so I have to proofread whatever I write . It’s a habit.

  • i don’t spell check, i write entries carefully, and i know what a dependent clause is. it’s not about spelling and typeos; those don’t really take away from the meaning of your composition. it’s about readers missing the message completely because the words are convoluded.

  • ironically, your pronoun “their” and your subject “someone” don’t agree in number.

  • generally I make sure I said everything the way I wanted to.

  • Hah, I’m with Deflates. That’ll be interesting.

I don’t need spell check. Too arrogant.

  • Quick proofread. Depends if I’m in a hurry or not.

  • I never use spell check.  I don’t need spell check.  I do, however, proofread for typos.  I type very, very fast, but sometimes I’m fumblefingers…

  • depends on how much of a hurry I’m in

  • I never use spellcheck, I always proofread.

  • sometimes i get lazy and just type.  other times i spellcheck, other times i proofread.

  • I use spell check, then most of the time I quickly go over my entry….it’s the internet, I mean come on.

  • No, I don’t proofread.  I barely even proofread the stuff I turn in at school.

  • Kind of, I spell check and I usually pick up the more obvious mistakes but my spelling and the such is rather terrible (considering the amount of reading I actually do). I usually don’t see some mistakes until another person points it out. I find this rather frustrating, and at times embarrassing, but alas there is nothing I can really do about it.

  • It’s the people who use “lol” too much that need a spell checker with replaces “lol” with “I’m a retard”.

    BECAUSE IT IS RETARDED DAMMIT

  • i awlyas profreed

  • I do. Ive decided bad grammar whether its in writing or speech is No bueno. I even think it displays what kind of person we are——-even measuring our intelligence. Heck, I try to not abbreviate. Lol…and in text msgs and IM, I spell out everything also.
It becomes a habit, a good habit. People think..Its the fricken internet, please! But helllooooooo, the internet is used for almost everything now.

  • HAHAHAHA!!!!! I was just thinking this myself yesterday. Everytime I read an entry of mine I find a new error, and maybe I’m just lazy but I never go back and change it. She is very correct, but I would say I do proof read when it comes to work or something more formal. When I make an entry on Xanga I tend to free flow when I write and just make sure the spelling errors are corrected. Hell there are probably error in this comment as I type this, but I won’t be proofreading it, I guarantee that.

  • I definately proofread. ;)

  • Proofread. No spell check, unless there’s a word I’m unsure about.

  • I do try to make sure I haven’t made any errors and I look up words when I’m not sure because I do know that not every error will be caught by spell check.

  • I proofread papers for school and other important stuff.

But Xanga? Nope. I don’t even spell check posts.

  • I don’t really do either one except that I do tend to read back as I am typing.

  • firefox underlines words it doesn’t recognize, so i catch it right away if i mistype. after i submit my entry, then i go back and read it to see if i did something stupid like put “to” instead of “two”. i’m kind of anal about that…

  • I proofread. I do not use spell check. If I don’t know how to spell a word, I look it up on http://www.dictionary.com before typing it. Sometimes I still skip words in my sentences. My high school English teacher told me that was because my brain works a lot faster than my fingers when typing, and faster than my hand when writing manually. I don’t know how true that is.

    Anyhow….PROOFREAD – NO SPELL CHECK. ;)

    Love.

  • This may be a bit obsessive, but I usually proofread, then submit as “Private”, then reread it as it looks once it’s posted, then edit if needed, then repost as “Public”.

Yeah, that does sound obsessive. Oh, well. That’s just who I am.

  • I don’t–because I spell correctly the frist time. ;)

  • i don’t proofread my ENTRIES, but my papers i do. anything i type i make someone ELSE read it because i often know what i meant and don’t realize the mistake.

  • I never use spellcheck on the content…only occasionally on a word I am unsure of. Mostly proofread and if I find an error I correct it.

  • you need to watch the video on Dosmangoes’s site. it was about proof reading as well and very funny.

  • I do. However, I’ve always been a bit of a grammar Nazi, so typing errors are rare for me. I’m not bragging, I’m just being honest.

That said, computer spell-checks come in handy on lengthy college essays. :)

  • i do both, because i get points taken off my papers for even the slightest grammatical error

  • I read over my entries before I hit submit and usually make some minor changes. Then I read it again once it’s posted and I might edit it if I think it doesn’t read well. I don’t usually use spell check, though, because the wavy red line tells me if I’ve spelled something wrong and it’s usually just a typo that I know how to fix.

  • I definitely do. Not to say I never make mistakes, but I am disgusted by posts/ comments where people sound like illiterate assholes. I just can’t understand why people would want to represent themselves so badly.

  • I have spell check installed on my browser. =)

  • I usually end up proof-reading only after hitting *post*.

  • I try to proofread, but sometimes I’m in too much of a hurry.

But I don’t think it’s spellchecker that’s caused the degradation of the English language, but rather an attitude of “It doesn’t matter if I spelled it right as long as you know what I meant”. One of my biggest pet peeves is when people don’t know the difference between to/too/two or there/their/they’re. I am shocked at the number of apathetic responses I receive when I point out that the wrong word was used. The same with spelling. When did “ne1 wnt 2 go 2 a movie l8r?” become proper spelling? I understand you can’t type well… that’s why you should keep trying and get better!

  • I always proofread. Sometimes, it just sounds awkward, and spell check won’t catch that.

  • i don’t use spellcheck, but i do proofread every thing i write.  That being said, i must also say i use a lower case “i” for personal reasons.  It is not a typo. :)

  • Kwik pruf reed

  • I usually proofread after I hit submit. That tends to give the text a different background, so I can catch what I missed before. Then I just hit edit.

  • i proofread after i submit and fix from there lol

  • I proofread, edit as necessary, and I never use spellcheck.

  • I notice that a lot. Some of the books I read have tons of typos and stuff. You’d think people would actually read it over.

When I was in school I didn’t proofread all that often. I was a slacker.

  • Not really. I have an instinct to back space and re-write anything that feels off as I write it. In that sense, my spellchecking is just the writing process. Sometimes I have some serious grammatical errors in an “essay comment” and in that case, I go back and correct it so people can understand me.

  • I proofread papers and stuff always, blog entries and such I proofread if I’m not in a hurry, but after I’ve posted it since errors are easier to see there, then just edit to fix it.

  • 我朋友8 月31日生日,幫幫忙去看她的blog,當是送她的一份禮物,不勝感激,幫幫忙吧。

My friend has birthday on 31st August, please go to her blog and have a look, as a present for her? Thank you.

  • I am a perfick speler.

  • I don’ tneed to proofrea.d

  • I’m a retard, Daniel has a good point. I’m a retard.

  • I proof read,, but then I still miss stuff that I catch sometimes years later.

  • I usually read e-mails and xanga posts aloud before submitting them. Reading things aloud to oneself is a great way to catch simple mistakes.

  • I just hit submit.

  • I proofread as I go.  Because I’m just that good.

  • This is one reason I never post entries.
I proofread so much that I end up not being able to do all at one time, so I spend a ridiculously long time on it before I post it.

Spell check just plain annoys me.
It doesn’t catch the little grammatical errors people make.
It also annoys me when people have a mistake they refuse to acknowledge because “spell check didn’t say it was wrong” or “they don’t care about it”.
Some illegal immigrants speak better English than Americans.

  • I’m usually conscious of my spelling while I’m typing. If I’m in doubt about how something is spelled, I take the time to look it up. After I’m finished with an entry I do proofread most times, not always, though. I never use spellcheck. I have taught my kids to never use spellcheck either.

As for Drakonskr’s pet peeve about the use of “lol”…. well Drakonskyr, what about the rest of the internet slang that is used in excess? LMAO, TTYL, LOTI, w00t, n00b, ect. the list is practically endless! Then there is the excessive use of emoticons… ;) :) :( ;P :D ^_^ and this list is also practically endless! What about them Drakonskyr?! Why not ban all internet slang?! Why are you so fixated on “lol”?

    lol

  • Neither.

  • fuk nooo

  • Haha neither.  Some times I proof read, but I only spell check if I’m really not sure on a word.  But most of the time I really don’t care.  This is Xanga.  As long as what I say makes sense, that’s really most important.  My job is anal about that stuff, and I’m on an LOA. =P

  • I used to proofread because I was afraid that I would make some kind of embarrassing mistake… But I don’t do that now anymore.

  • usually both. sometime just submit

  • I do both, but my husband pointed out that I seem to write like I speak !

  • Yep, I proofread… it ticks me off when someone uses bad grammar…

  • I dont proofread my xanga. I proofread essays and emails and letters though.

  • I do neither! But that is because I am lazy, of course.

  • I proofread very carefully. I’m an editor by trade so I feel it is good practice.

  • I always do a quick re-read but sometimes that is all I have time for. It bothers me when the newspaper makes mistakes…

  • On Xanga, I always proofread after a hit submit. And sometimes I add somethings, so it kinda sucks for the bored people who read my RSS feeds, cause they only look once. But .. I am trying to proofread before I hit the submit button. I don’t use spell check though, considering that I proofread.

  • I proofread everything I write; in fact, if it takes me longer than a couple of minutes to write, I’ll proofread it twice.

  • THRZ SMELL CEK OON THEES THONGS?

  • Ya’z, Lady V, Iz AbSoluTly fUcKIn’ aGGitaTINg. >:)

P.S. Seriously, you will never get one at drakonskyr. The guy is too fuckin’ smart. I never tried, for it is just futile. I’m smart enough, compared to DMV, just to realize that.

  • I use spell check.. and try to re-phrase things so people can understand what I’m saying. I hate the idea we can not spell check in comment area. Drives me nuts.

  • sometimes.. I do my dads emails that he sends out to people too.. I guess it really important in the business world..lol

  • Proofread. Multiple times.

  • Decided to at least use spell-check from now on and to drop using “lol”.

  • I proofread obsessively; mistakes still slip through.  I don’t use spell check.

  • I do both. : P

  • I just never make any mistakes, it saves loads of time.

  • Yeah, I’ll usually do a quick proofread before submitting an entry. I’ve never use spell check on xanga. Ever.

  • ….Though you’ll notice I rarely proofread comments. Ha.

  • Mostly both, but sometimes things slip by, especially in comments.

  • I just quickly look through… Sometimes. Often I don’t at all, I forget or don’t care. LOL. I only really use spell check for letters and stuff, if I feel like it.

  • i almost always do

  • Of course I proofread… maybe a couple of times. And I read it after I post and if there are still any mistakes, I got back and edit it again. I find if you stop, do something for a couple of hours and then come back to an essay, you’ll find errors even if you proofread it a dozen times before.

  • PROOFREAD.  Twice, at least.  However, for me, this includes Spell Check. :)

  • i proofread everything.

    [multiple times.]

    i’m a nerd like that.

  • there’s no accounting for bad grammar… anyway, i usually give my postings a once over but once in a while a small mistake might slip through the cracks

  • All the time. I don’t want to make a fool of myself.

  • Yes! But I’m in transcription, so errors cost money.

  • I don’t use spellcheck.  I use dictionary.com, if I can’t remember how to spell something.  So yes, I proof-read.

  • I always proofread. I don’t think there’s ever been a time I’ve used spell checker on Word when typing a research paper or short story.

  • Nope.  I don’t proofread.  Unless I’m writing something for work or school.

  • I never do spellcheck for Xanga.  I usually only use it on papers that I have to submit to school or work.

  • Oh I don’t just proofread – I OBSESS over every little word choice, every comma, every sentence’s structure.  I will read and reread paragraphs during and after I’m done writing, and if it’s on xanga, I will reread it daily unless I’m writing new things.  I even reread my journals before writing new entries sometimes, and if there’s grammatical or spelling errors, I’ll fix them.

One of the most annoying things on earth is that you can’t edit comments on other people’s xangas.

  • I proofread, but it always seems I can’t catch some typos until after I hit the Publish button.

  • I always proofread, and I must say, I am ashamed at the illiterate jerks who bastardize the English language via the internet.

  • i proofread. but that does not mean there wont be anything misspelled! sometimes i like the way i spell…like spazzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

  • No, I don’t.  My spelling errors aren’t so bad that my friends couldn’t read the post or I couldn’t go back and understand what I meant to say.

  • I definitely proofread.

  • I usually read what I type as I type it and only occasionally go back and check it.  If it’s a paper or something though, I’m much more apt to proofread it.

  • meh, as long as I can understand it, I usually don’t bother^_^

  • Id never submit anythin if i proofread. id get caught in editin n rewriting.

  • I don’t ever use spellcheck. I read over it at least once in its entirety before hitting “submit”.

But I was an editor, so I tend to see errors more readily.

  • Sometimes, if its important enough.

  • I don’t.  But my fiance does.  And then proceeds to correct me *hehe*.

  • i edit and proof as i write

  • Neither. Am I lazy? Probably. It drives my grandma crazy ’cause she says random people can run across it and will think I’m uneducated if I leave typos in my blog.

  • llamas love spell check.

  • I usually proofread.

  • comments are one thing, business correspondence and professional work should be checked tho.

  • I try to proofread as I go along sometimes. Spellcheck doesn’t catch everything.
