  • Larry Craig and Gay Sex in the Restroom

Republican Senator Larry Craig was arrested and later plead guilty to disorderly conduct.

    Photo

The police report filed by the undercover police officer reported that Larry Craig knew all the signs of initiating gay sex.  According to the police officer, Larry Craig looked into the stall.  He then went into the stall right next to the undercover police officer.

He then tapped his foot (all of this is claimed to be the way a person initiates sex in the public restroom).  He then moved his foot over into the stall of the undercover police officer.  He then ran his hand underneath the stall.  Here is the link:  Link

So the undercover police officer was in the airport restroom to catch people having public sex in the restroom.  This is not an issue of prostitution.

Do you think it should be illegal for Larry Craig to initiate sex in a public restroom?

  • Well, you know those Republicans have to get a certain amount of gay sex. Just like creationists.

  • Yes but only for Larry Craig, everyone else can have a party in the potty if they want.

    Oh that is so yuck

  • Sure.
I know people who have had sex in that bathroom.
    So why not?

  • um? your sarcasm confuses me…

sex in public- please no thank you… the rest of the world would prefer not to accidentally walk in on people going at it, thank you very much.

  • he wanted to have sex with a male in the bathroom?  i need to read the news more.  Sex with any one that is not your spouse should be illegal……guy/women…….would that be too harsh of a law?  only married  couples of men and women?  no one could ever enforce it, but would it be wrong if it were made a law?  It’s God’s law…….just curious what others would have to comment on that question…….maybe you can post it :)

  • YEA that is gross!!!

  • Well, the government feels it is their responsibility and right to make anything and everything illegal so why shouldn’t this be illegal also?

  • If a person insists on having sex in a public bathroom make sure it’s the kind of bathroom where you can lock the door so that you are not interrupted. I mean for heaven’s sake what if a kid walks in?! But to make it illegal? Hmmm then make sex in elevators illegal. How often do people… hetrosexuals, gays, lesbians… have sex in elevators? How about asking people online to meet somewhere to have sex? How far are we willing to go? Personally I find sex in a public bathroom nasty!!! *shivers* Gross!

  • thevertigopoet: i agree with the Biblical view as well, but seeing how this nation is becoming more and more pluralistic as we speak, i seriously doubt that ever becoming reality unless God grants this nation a revival- and boy are we in need of one!

notice we haven’t really been successful in war since WW2- what happened after that? the sexual revolution and the legalization of abortion… coincidence? probably not.

  • Public washrooms are disgusting.  It should be illegal for any kind of sex in them.  That’s just disgusting.

  • Definately.

There is a basline standard for decency in the public sphere. Children have access to public restrooms. I’m sure we can all agree that children ought not be subjected to witnessing sex acts in public restrooms.

  • Drakonskyr

“Well, you know those Republicans have to get a certain amount of gay sex. Just like creationists.”

Were you born fucking retarded or did your mom kick you as a baby?

  • Yeah. In public places.

    It’s unsanitary.

  • I think there should be an area in public restrooms where people can go to have sex.

Do you realize how fucked up the country would become if all Biblical mandates (particularily the OT ones) were legislated!?!??!?!?!?!?

  • Preciousonyx – What about the Korean War? The Cold War? The Gulf War?

And to vertigopoet – What the heck is wrong with you? How much power are you really willing to give over to the government? How much control do you want them to have over your life? That’s so stupid! Do you really need the government to make a law telling you not to have sex? Do you really need the government being your mommy and daddy? Can’t you just control how you act on a day-to-day basis? Get some self-control and personal responsibility, and maybe an understanding of the writings that the laws of this country were based on. I’d suggest reading John Locke, the man who wrote the book(Second Treatise of Government) upon which the Constitution was based. You’ll find that he isn’t in favor of a socialist government controlling our lives, but rather of each individual having some self control and personal responsibility over their own actions.

Ahh, the smell of unbridled zealotry.

You think that something should be made into a law that everyone should have to submit to, simply because it’s the “word of god?”

I seriously hope you’re not over 14. In any case you should just shut your shit cannon and wise the fuck up.

  • Yes. It is a public area, and sex is definitely a private affair.

I like Sgt. Karsnia’s response to Craig pulling out his senator business card.

  • Those are some seriously subtle signals for sex. It sounds like a whole other language.

  • BTW, I am a Christian, and I do believe in the Bible’s teachings. I just also beleve that people, and not the government, are responsible for their OWN choices.

  • I think that it should be made into a law that a man cannot touch a woman if she is on her period. Of course this is probably a strange concept to people like thevertigopoet, who are in all likelihood doomed to remain ignorant of female anatomy.

  • “notice we haven’t really been successful in war since WW2- what happened after that? the sexual revolution and the legalization of abortion… coincidence? probably not.”

Ah, yes. So how skilled the US is at killing people is a direct correlation to how “moral” we are.

    Makes perfect sense.

  • “Public washrooms are disgusting. It should be illegal for any kind of sex in them. That’s just disgusting.”~perseyownz

Which is WHY we should clean them.

  • Eeeew… so… disturbing… on so… many… levels… D:

As to the question, yes. There are such things as public decency laws, and public restrooms are, well… public. By definition.

  • I think it’s not unreasonable for sex in public places to be illegal. But as for the government passing laws against premarital or homosexual sex, I think Davocrinator above me summed up the reasons why that idea makes me cringe and laugh cynically at the same time.

  • “notice we haven’t really been successful in war since WW2- what happened after that? the sexual revolution and the legalization of abortion… coincidence? probably not.”~PreciousOnyx

Notice also, that your parents are goddamn morons, who lacked the prudence of knowing that if they procreated they’d bring about a being soooo stupid that it necessitates a scientific endeavor simply to understand just how brainless you are.

Next time you make asinine attempts to link things completely unrelated to one another, maybe you should cite something other than your religious, wishful intuition.

  • “Hmmm then make sex in elevators illegal. How often do people… hetrosexuals, gays, lesbians… have sex in elevators? How about asking people online to meet somewhere to have sex? How far are we willing to go?”~LadyValkyrie37

For many of these puritans, there is literally *no* limit to which they would like to impose their religious morality on the rest of the nation.

  • “Were you born fucking retarded or did your mom kick you as a baby?”~huginn

I’ve been a bad influence on you.

  • I have more important questions in my xanga.

  • PreciousOynx

“notice we haven’t really been successful in war since WW2- what happened after that? the sexual revolution and the legalization of abortion… coincidence? probably not.”

Your argument here is wrong on so many levels:

1.) Get your history straight: We’ve been successful in the Korean War, in our Afghan. campaigns, in the Cold War

2.) You have the burden of proof to demonstrate a caustive connection.

3.) Pointing out that the two trends occured in concordance proves nothing. In the same time-frame, Penicillin was discovered by Fleming and antibiotics became mass produced. Your made claim is just as ridiculous as claiming that domestic mass-production of antibiotic led to military defeats abroad.

4.) Your implicit claim is that God is somehow punishing the United States militarily for moral degenerancy at home. Yes, it makes peferect sense: Allowing godless Communists and Muslim Iraqis defeat the predominately Christian U.S. to prove his point. This is also the same God that allowed the baking of his chosen people in Germany during Hitler’s reign?

  • “For many of these puritans, there is literally *no* limit to which they would like to impose their religious morality on the rest of the nation.”~yohsiph

Although, after reviewing Valkrie’s statement, I see that it was not pertaining to religious morality.

  • It is not illegal. For him to be a hypocrite and a man who pushed legislation banning gay marriage that makes it wrong for him. We have laws saying you can not engage in ‘lewd’ acts in public, why would a public restroom be any different?…

  • Yohisph

I’ve been a bad influence on you.

Ha! It is my blogging philosophy to counter general rudeness with rudeness in turn.

What you do is acceptable in my book: You specifically address bad arguments with sarcasm and ridicule. You don’t make unmotivated general attacks. What Drakonskyr did was make a general attack half the board population independent of the contents of any comments. It read as purely as a personal attack, and in no way an addressing of particular views or ideas.

  • You would think that someone in his political position would be far to smart to stumble into something like this. Smells like dirty politics at work to me (no pun intended).

But, yes, sex in public bathrooms should be illegal. I mean, what if a kid walked in? We’re talking scarred for life, no?

  • at least he’s doing it in the bathroom and not in some random corner or car or cab or AIRPLANE bathroom!

  • “You don’t make unmotivated general attacks.”~huggin

There’s no such thing as an “unmotivated” attack. I think that you and Drakonskyr just have different ideas of what constitutes justification for personal attacks. Granted that one of his targets were creationists, it’s likely that his motivation is the same as mine – he *knows* their arguments are absurd, and having found their position fundamentally contemptible, he has no problem ridiculing them. People come here for different reasons, Drakon obviously likes to fuck with creationists and conservatives.

I’m not attacking you for attacking him; that’s up for to him to do or not do. But that’s the situation in my eyes.

  • Common sense dictates that sex acts will NOT be performed in a public place. Common decency demands that sex will NOT be performed in a public place. Anyone lacking common sense or common decency is unfit to live in a civilized culture. It’s about SELF-CONTROL. If people will not exercise self-control, the government will move in and control you. Live morally and the government won’t have to pass a law that gives it license to enforce its own brand of morality.

Sex with anyone other than your spouse is a breach of contract. The marriage is null and void when adultery occurs.

As for Dragonskyr’s comment, at Creation God created Man and Woman. Your concept of “gay” does not describe accurately the relationship our first parents had.

  • Point taken, Yohsiph.

  • “Common sense dictates that sex acts will NOT be performed in a public place.”~wordwarrior39

Is that a fact? But all things common are of little value.

“Common decency demands that sex will NOT be performed in a public place. Anyone lacking common sense or common decency is unfit to live in a civilized culture.”

Ideas of common decency, *especially* as they relate to sexuality, differ from culture to civilized culture. I’ll grant that sex in a public place is contrary to western ideas of common decency, but it by no means has any bearing on negating or affirming civility.

    “It’s about SELF-CONTROL.”

    Lol.

“If people will not exercise self-control, the government will move in and control you. Live morally and the government won’t have to pass a law that gives it license to enforce its own brand of morality.”

Circular. If you live morally on because you fear that if you don’t, the government will control you, then the government already controls you. You claim that living immorally causes the government to become an enforcer of morality. But of what morality? Certainly not one contrary to the morality that is being violated, and so the government is already the enforcer — your conformity is only evidence of that.

“Sex with anyone other than your spouse is a breach of contract. The marriage is null and void when adultery occurs.”

Not if the married couple are polygamous, or enjoy some sort of swinger lifestyle in which friends and acquaintances are invited to the bedroom.

“As for Dragonskyr’s comment, at Creation God created Man and Woman. Your concept of “gay” does not describe accurately the relationship our first parents had.”

And your concept of our ancestral heritage doesn’t accurately depict reality.

  • Going through Dan’s link and reading a seperate AP release on yahoo, I am absolutely shocked that a U.S. Senator and man of Craig’s age would be so coarse and reckless in his actions. There seems absolutely no room for ambiguity in the police officer’s description of accounts.

  • “I am absolutely shocked that a U.S. Senator and man of Craig’s age would be so coarse and reckless in his actions.”~huginn

That struck me too. I’m sure there are much safer and inconspicuous ways to acquire gay sex. The fact that he’s versed in communicating in stalls for exchange of services shows that there’s a chance he does this often. Given the escalated probability of being found out that comes with performing the acts in a public place, it’s just dumbfounding that he would risk his career over something that could probably be secured through less threatening means.

Maybe being a powerful politician gives him a feeling of invincibility, or maybe the riskiness of the act itself makes it worth it for him.

  • wordwarrior39

I don’t care about Senator Craig seeking a gay encounter or his intended extra-marital sex. The whole situation of reckless anonymous sex is disgustingly unbecoming of a senior political figure. My sense of it is a bit like Winona Ryder was caught shop-lifting but much much worse. Winona’s situation could be laughed off, this one can’t.

At least the political fallout should be interesting.

  • I think there should be an area in public restrooms where people can go to have sex.- Yohsiph

    -I second that.

  • man, u guys……….where do your morals come from?  What basis do you live by?  This country was founded on God’s Word……..read the books, do the research……..prove me wrong……..I dare you.

I was just making a comment, and you guys went off on a tangent.  I don’t understand that.  Read the bible……God is in control of the government, the terrorist, etc, Satan, etc……..life would be much easier if only people actually “believed” in the One that is in control.  I’m out, no more from me………

  • It doesn’t matter if it’s Larry Craig, you, or me, and it doesn’t matter whether it’s gay sex or straight sex.

What matters is that I don’t think anyone can legally have any type of sex in a public place because any person that sees them having sex in public can sue them for “indecent exposure” or something like that. Right?

  • TED RUSSERT: Larry Craig, would you want the last word from the Senate be an acquittal of the president and no censure?

SEN. CRAIG: Well, I don’t know where the Senate’s going to be on that issue of an up or down vote on impeachment, but I will tell you that the Senate certainly can bring about a censure resolution and it’s a slap on the wrist. It’s a, “Bad boy, Bill Clinton. You’re a naughty boy.”

The American people already know that Bill Clinton is a bad boy, a naughty boy.

I’m going to speak out for the citizens of my state, who in the majority think that Bill Clinton is probably even a nasty, bad, naughty boy.

  • LilAznGuitarKid
It doesn’t matter if it’s Larry Craig, you, or me, and it doesn’t matter whether it’s gay sex or straight sex…

    Really?

I’m going through the Federalist Papers for my leisure reading and having David McCullough’s 1776 and John Adams lined up on my reading list, I am just depressed with the news. Normally, I would be privately cheering any crack at the Republicans, but juxtaposed for me against our great polititians and statesmen: Hamilton, Jefferson, Madison– I am just depressed on the indignity of Craign’s actions and inevitable smut in the public response. How low have our politicians fallen? How utterly trivial is this all? Rather than debating substnative issues, the entire country is focused on Craig’s singular act of sheer stupidity.

A part of me realize that it is a bit unfair to hold our politicians to idealized conduct. Jefferson, after all, had his Sally Hemings thing and Hamilton had a bit of a temper (didn’t work out too well for him). I also realize that the public uproar of all of this will unfairly overshadow what good Senator Craig had accomplished as a public servant. Even realizing all this, I can’t help but feel supremely disappointed.

  • (That was Craig in 1999, by the way.)

  • Awe, but having public sex is totally fun! lmfaos hahaha [jk for the stingy people out there]

Eh, I don’t care. As long as I’m not watching it or anywhere near it, I do not care.

  • Awe, but having public sex is totally fun! lmfaos hahaha [jk for the stingy people out there]

Eh, I don’t care. As long as I’m not watching it or anywhere near it, I do not care.

  • No.

I realize that I am able to accept what so many of your readers cannot. I’m not going to apologize.

  • No, I don’t think that’s something you should be arrested for.

I think it’s something that will be publicized, though, ESPECIALLY IF YOU’RE A FREAKING SENATOR.

    Duh. *eyeroll*

  • No, that’s totally redick. It’s no one’s business how gay the senator wants to be.

  • Leave him alone, I say, and let him and his family deal with what is really a internal matter of them. The courts will decide the outcome anyway. Politics is about getting things done (in theory, anyway) and that’s what we should focus on, NOT on the act itself.

People love a good gossip, but this is tiring.

    ’nuff said…

  • I have a hard time stomaching a charge based on the claim that one “initiates sex in public” with strangers, since it is all non-verbal.  Looking into the stall? Maybe he was just checking to see if it was empty or not? Moved his foot over? Maybe he was just stretching his legs? Airport restrooms are small, especially when you are jammed in  there with your suitcase. Reaching under? Who is to say he wasnt just asking for t.p.? Who wrote up this list of non-verbal cues to troll for anonymous gay sex? Is there such a list for anonymous heterosexual sex? Because I’m feeling lonely down here.

Unless the man actually said, “hey, want to f%ck?” or actually touched the undercover officer (and not freaking with his FOOT, unless it was to place it on his BUM), I have an issue with the charge itself.  But as to having sex in a public place.. I think that should be illegal, because its bad for business.

  • You know Dan, it’s always a bit more special when you comment on one of my own posts =]

  • Ah, mockery. Fun.

  • Why is it always the Republicans and the Evangelical pastors who preach and legislate and make speeches the most about these things that end up doing those same things. It seems like either a Republican or Evangelical is in a sex or money scandal every second week.

  • That’s just… ew.

  • boy I would be in trouble….I don’t know all these “signs” ! what if I accidentally initate a “come on”? Thank you! Now I have something else to worry about!

  • Ewwww! Of COURSE it should be illegal. I had no idea people did that…wow.

  • While I think it’s absolutely gross and inappropriate…. I don’t think there’s anything illegal about it.  Especially if he didn’t follow through with it.

  • It is public knowledge that he’s gay:
    http://joemygod.blogspot.com/2006/10/and-loser-islarry-craig.html

This was published in October 2006.

  • sex has probably been taking place in public restrooms since the invention of the outhouse.

  • no. I said that yesterday, though.

  • and since it’s early and I still lack inhibitions, let me also say that this country was founded on Deism (similar to Christianity in that a ‘creator’ and ‘god’ exists, but holding no such similar tenets regarding ‘his/its’ interference in or concern for human lives) not on “God’s Word;” so don’t be so ignorant.

  • haha it’s not where I’d want to have sex….and I even consider myself somewhat creative. But no, not illegal. Just slightly unsanitary. Especially in an airport.

  • the law, as a product of the country and the people in it, is not meant to be a moral code of conduct; if it is, it is only so in parts and coincidentally.

You know what, Dan, I’m gonna make my own post about this.

  • cuz I have a lot to say about it.

  • Drakonskr: very funny stuff.

  • yep.  that is just nasty.

  • WHY would you want to have sex in a bathroom ANYWAYS?

    that’s so gross.

  • Yes, that kind of conduct in a public place, even if it’s a restroom, should be illegal.

  • Sex in the bathroom is overrated.

Especially if she’s noisy. Then you get people asking if you’re trying to kill her or something.

  • It depends. Was he planning on getting laid IN the stall? Then yes. Was he just looking for some loving to take home and have a little slap and tickle and hide the pickle? Then, no.

  • I have my doubts about Senator Craig trying to initiate sex in the restroom. I think the democrats are making an issue of it to make a republican senator look bad.

  • “man, u guys……….where do your morals come from?  What basis do you live by?  This country was founded on God’s Word……..read the books, do the research……..prove me wrong……..I dare you. I was just making a comment, and you guys went off on a tangent.  I don’t understand that.  Read the bible……God is in control of the government, the terrorist, etc, Satan, etc……..life would be much easier if only people actually “believed” in the One that is in control.  I’m out, no more from me………” – Vertigopoet

Are you really this stupid? You actually belueve that God is in absolute control of everything? That He takes away the free will of man? I have NEVER read that in the Bible. Each person is responsible for their own actions, God isn’t responsible for Larry Craig being a scumbag, Larry Craig is. Further, if you would do YOUR research as I suggested, you’d find that yes, while this Country was founded on Biblical principles, it was also founded on other important documents, such as the writings of John Locke, and the Magna Carta, as well as others.

Once the Government starts imposing morality, we’ve become nothing more than babies.

  • I think it should be legal to do so, but I find it entirely unsanitary. Sex in public places such as this I don’t see a lot of problem in, honestly. To each his own you know.

Speaking of “to each his own”, I am disgusted by the devout Christians posting in this thread that “only married male/female couples should be allowed to have sex”. Grow up. We’re not a theocracy, I hope we never will be. If Christians don’t want to have sex until marriage with a member of the opposite sex, congratulations for your restraint and enjoy your lives, but its not your place, nor the governments place to tell people who or who they cannot have sex with.

    Jeeez.

  • Just to clarify, the government does have the right to tell us where we can have sex to protect other members of the public, but not who. Although to point something out, if you think our society is bad, you should go to Europe where deviant sex is quite a bit more commonplace, and prostituion is legal in many countries.

  • I don’t think it matters if it is a senator or not…..it is a public place and their are reasons it isn’t okay to have sex in public places.

  • Maybe he wasn’t. Who knows, really?

I didn’t know there was a set protocol for initiating sex in a restroom. Dan, you may be giving people ideas… =P

  • As for illegality, well… I don’t think it should be illegal to initiate sex there, no. I may not agree with it, or personally prefer that mode, but that doesn’t mean I think it should be illegal. As for having sex there, yes, that should be illegal. As several others have said, for the sake of the children and general keeping of the peace. The airport and its affiliated airlines own the bathrooms… they should have the right to legislate them. Technically it’s not a public place at all.

  • Are there actual laws on the book that prohibit sex in public? I have never been certain of this.  But it makes sense that if it is a public restroom a child could walk in and who wants to face their kid with that.

  • It sounds hard to prove. While I agree that a police officer who is there to investigate the happenings of a particular crime is more likely to be believed based on his word, it is still his word against Craig. Unfortunately for Craig, he pled guilty to a different charge, which still looks bad on him. I suppose his fingerprints could be where he ran his hands. The truth is I think the whole thing is not worth much of my interest.

  • A strangely worded question. It should be illegal for anyone.

  • Initiating sex- that is, soliciting it, sure. however, sex itself should be illegal in public places.

  • Well, one person made the comment that public restrooms are, public, so you should not be allowed.  BUT, using a restroom would not constitute defecation in public, so there is a level of privacy that is granted in a closed stall.  But they have an intended use, and its not actually for sex.  Personally its not a very romantic or sexy place, rather unclean.

Basically the Senator should just come out, Gay or Bi, whatever he is.

  • What if he indicated he wanted to have sex, but then would have gone to a private motel or home?  He basically, through hand gestures, indicated he was open to sex, but was the location disclosed.  (In all reality, yes he intended to do it in the stall, but one could imagine a different scenario)

  • Well the sex would’ve been in public because like others said public restrooms are public space, it would’ve been extra disturbing if he had succeeded with someone and you could hear it…but geez what kind of sleez bag walks into a bathroom used by everybody and feels comfortable enough to get their kicks out of it? Unless your really dirty, I wouldn’t think you could ever get turned on in there.

I do feel however elected officials should be leaders and set a decent example for people by keeping their personal lives discreet and not open to public places. Or perhaps we should shift our leader/role model paradigm completely away from politicians and just let them do their job. However, that will never happen…so what he did is playing with fire.

  • Unless it’s a night club.

  • If I am taking a dump, I don’t usually like to be bothered. But then again I make a lot of smell and sound to evacuate anyone in the restroom.

  • No. If an anti-gay conservative wants to have gay sex he should be allowed to do it wherever and whenever he wants.

    …. GAG ME!

  • …. I think it should be illegal for ANYONE to initiate sex in a public places, not just Larry Craig.

When I read this, I shook my head, laughed a little and stated to my friends “only in Idaho….” I’m soo glad I left that state!

  • Yea, bout time congressmen start bein held up to sum moral standard. N leave God out, he is busy w a less ambitious project.

  • I have to agree with sahel578 “Unless the man actually said, “hey, want to f%ck?” or actually touched the undercover officer (and not freaking with his FOOT, unless it was to place it on his BUM), I have an issue with the charge itself.”

  • I don’t think any kind of sex in any restroom is really okay. I meannn, there are children who don’t really want to walk in and see two people going at it.

  • is sex in public (gay or otherwise) illegal? oh wait, it is.

Now the real questions is: but, really, wasnt the cop asking for it ~_^

  • republicans…. christ they cant control their sex lives.

    I agree! It’s God’s law, why can’t it be the country’s, too?

  • Why is this even a discussion? It already is illegal.

Quit goading your readers into partisan politics.

  • “Well, you know those Republicans have to get a certain amount of gay sex. Just like creationists.”

    Righty-o

  • The guy is gay and he’s an asshole sick bastard!
