  • Illegal Immigration and Social Security Numbers

The government has found a new way to go after illegal immigrants.

The Bush administration wanted to mail notices to 140,000 employers about “suspect Social Security numbers.”  The effort was to identify people with fake Social Security numbers.  The new policy is currently held up in court.  The employers would face fines and penalties if they didn’t clear up discrepancies in their paperwork.  Critics of the plan say that it is a misuse of the Social Security Administrations database.  They are concerned that it will cause employers to discriminate against legal immigrants.  Here is the link:  Link

Do you think the government should use the Social Security Administration’s database to go after the employers of illegal immigrants?

  • Isn’t that invading privacy?
    And I’m just ASKING.

  • What! They might discriminate against illegal immigrants? Oh the horror of it all!

    Duh….

  • They might actually catch identity thieves? How dare they!

  • My comments disappeared? Awesome!

I agree with doing this. The letters should be sent. They’re ILLEGAL.

    C’mon people!

  • they can come over to canada! =]

  • Sounds great to me.

  • So long as that paperwork isn’t sent my fuckin’ way, I’m totally alright with whatever.

    ryc: I aim to please.

  • I think they should do it.

  • If they’re legal, they would have a validly issued number and not be on the list.  Obviously giving a fake ssn is illegal no matter what, so I don’t understand the problem here.

  • This should just be a given . . .how else do we take care of the problem??

  • I still like my ‘giants walls all over the US’ idea.

  • I think that the employers should have been more careful in the first-place. However, the letters should be sent and the employers should be more careful with EVERYONE, that’s what they were supposed to do anyway. I hate when incompetence is rewarded.

  • No.

I just heard from a xangan who said that when her grandma her grandma never knew for a long long time that the nickname she went by wasn’t her Actual name because she never saw the Birth certificate because she never needed to show it to get a drivers license.  (and then all she needed to show was her ID)

Things were so much simpler identification wise.

    Now there’s identify theft. . .online theft. . .

Things are a bit more complicated it would seem.

    But please.

Don’t let social security–an organization mean to Help people by giving people disability, people in need money–be the bad guy.

that’s hypocritical (but not too surprising of the government nonetheless)

  • why not, its illegal for a reason

  • I’m not sure why this is even an issue. If you’re not doing anything illegal, than you have nothing to worry about. If you are, then you deserve to pay the consequences.

  • Go after the employers – the exploiters of illegal immigrants? – Of course!!

  • isnt identity theft illegal.. and forging documents. Besides the issue of illegal immigration – identity fraud is illegal and should be punished

  • Discrimination is gonna happen. So piss off, illegal immigrant should not be here. If your country is so fucking bad then it’s better determination to get her legally.

As far as Legal immigrants; Good for you! You’re a rolemodel to all of your country! And uh, fake social security VS real social security…. Shouldn’t the government, and employers be able to tell the fucking difference? Just sayin’…

  • IT’S IN THE WALLS! DAMMIT!

  • employers don’t always exploit illegal immigrants. if they honestly don’t know who’s legal and illegal, why should it be their fault? if the government wants to go after illegal immigrants they should do it themselves, they’re attacking the middleman by doing this. which isn’t surprising, the lazy idiots.

  • I regret to inform you that the Social Security System is already being abused – has been for years.

  • absolutely. You think Mexicans who come and work here illegally should be entitled to social security checks and medicare? Of course they should go after them…

  • employers know and anyone who thinks otherwise is a fool.

  • illegal immigration needs to be corrected, not sure if this is the best method, but until someone comes up with something better, something being done is better than nothing

  • I’d be a little suspect about ANYONE having access to the SSA database, even the government.

  • RYC: I knew you were teasing. :)

Also, I’m sad that it had to be the one that I posted first on that you deleted. I’m oh so sad!!!!

I guess it’s okay. You kept the one that someone who was actually excited to be first posted on.

I love your questions most of the time, get people to thinking.

I still say yes concerning this one. WOO!

  • Hmmmm. Some people are right. This might lead to discrimination against perfectly legal immigrants. Unfortunately, I fear there is no other way. This is the ultimate method to actually catching illegal immigrants – by checking their S.S. number.

  • <——YAy said this LEGAL U.S. blood born citizen!!!

  • If you’re serious about findi9ng and kicking out illegal immigrants, then yes this is one great way to do so. However it seems to me people like to make a bunch of noise but then never actually do anything. Perhapsw that’s b/c they realize that our economy would collapse if we really did get rid of them all (say bye bye to Walmart, Target, and every other store that sells cheap goods made by illegals).

One of THE best ways to go after illegals, if you’re serious, is to go after the companies that hire them. Put in regulations about checking up on SSN and legal documents (which are often ignored now or are very lax). If jobs aren’t there, there won’t be any reason for illegals to come here.

I myself think we should make it easier for people to come to this country legally– the US has depended on immigration from the beginning. The statue of liberty itself says “bring me your poor, your homeless, your desperate” etc. However, I do find it amusing that republicans b!tch so much about this problem, but don’t seem to actually DO anything about fixing the “problem.”

  • I don’t really care, but two of those men are holding their crotches.

  • Go after them! They’re going after landlords who rent to illegals, why not employers?

  • the cheap goods made at target and walmart might be made by illegal immigrants, but they would be illegal immigrants in CHINA. why would these stores buy goods from american companies when they would have to pay american prices?

  • Well it’s not like employing illegal immigrants is illegal or anything.

    Oh wait.

  • these people are here illegally…arnt they breaking the law?.where is the crime. I say go for it!

  • isn’t social security a part of the government? if so, then the government is using it’s own resources to fight crime. what a novel idea.

  • Yes I think it sounds like a great idea. And between you, me and the universe I think that if the employers are found to have known they were illegal, then they should be punished as well. Not jail time necessarily, but a nice fine should do.

  • haha whoops I just noticed I already said what’s up there, blah it’s too late to think. Well either way I agree whole heartedly!

  • I’m only wondering, how is conversely legal to hire an illegal immigrant?  I’m all for immigrants getting gainful employment and making a better life here, but there is a legal way to do it.  I’m pretty sure its not terribly fast or easy, perhaps not even fair.  But if I want to move to England and start working, I cant just show up in London and never leave, there are papers to fill out, and visas to be obtained.

  • Not enough information for me to decide.

  • Yes.  But also set up a better and wider guest worker program.  Enforce the laws fully, but also help those who want to work legally and protect their rights as guests in our country.

  • DO IT. Even my ex, who is Hispanic, would be in favor of it.

  • Listen, if you are going to the employers, that means the immigrant has obviously done well enough to hold a job.  If they have a SSN that they are using for work, don’t they also have to pay those taxes…if that’s the case….What’s the problem?

  • Bush should not see all immgrants as terrorists..

there are human rights issues at stake..

  • Eventually, I see all of us getting”chipped”^_^. It is the only way to document everyone, and will fulfill  what it says in the Bible.
