Saddam Hussein
It is being reported that Saddam Hussein offered to go into exile a month before the U.S. went into Iraq if the U.S. paid him $1 billion and if he could keep all of his information about weapons of mass destruction. Here is the link: Link

The cost of the war is estimated to be at $455 billion.
Knowing what you know now: If you could pay Saddam $1 billion to go into exile and let him keep his information about weapons of mass destruction, would you do it?

HELL NO
Not that I personally would (since I don’t have a billion,) but that is the bargain of the century. And since he’s a head of state, you kind of get around the “don’t negotiate with terrorists” hangup.
-shrugs-
no, it’d be a waste when another dictator could easily rise
What the hell?? No.
sure why not, but who gives a crap he’s dead
Eighth!!!
No. He wasn’t known as a man of his word, was he?
pfft. no.
I can’t believe we have paid that much for the war though. Man, that’s tragic.
how could he keep his information about WMD’s if he didn’t have any WMDs?
NO
If exile meant 300 feet below the ocean, with a rock chained to his testicles I’d might consider it.
No, he was a crazy person; he would not have held to his word and probably use the money for more weapons.
Have a great weekend, Dan!
Hugs!

Sure tell him that you would meet him with his truckload of information and his two sons at the border where you will begin escorting him and that he will get his money when he is in whatever country he wants to be exiled to. Then when he arrives at the border you shoot him and his sons then burn the the truck.
no
I would have. In case if any of you were wondering, that’s exactly what the USA claimed they wanted Saddam to do in the first place, just leave. The only conceiveable problem is imagining what he could do with one billion dollars and his knowledge of weapons.

Well, the war wasn’t about Saddam, weapons of mass destruction, or forcing democracy upon a group of people.
Maybe if they followed him and made sure he didn’t do anything…yes, that would’ve been a great alternative to the Iraq War.
-David
Either way…we’re screwed.
Somehow it doesn’t seem like a terrible trade, as no one can agree on the information about the WMDs as it is.
Nah. I didn’t trust him.
However, most of the money (and human life) spent on the war has been spent *after* his capture.
Um. Wasn’t he in exile when he was found?
The nerve of some people. Haha.
No, the man was a liar and only out for himself.
Your formula doesn’t work on Xanga anymore. You hardly show up on Google’s radar anymore. I only hope you’ve got a back up plan as you begin your slow descent into obscurity.
No, he’s not someone you could actually trust
no. there’s no trust. plus he’s dead now so what does it matter. i do however wish that some other alternative could have been found, even if it did cost 1 billion because we’d be in a much better place than we are now.
no
WHAT information about WMD’s? I thought none were found?
As brutal as it was, Saddam likely got his just desserts.
no
$455 billion wasn’t spent on apprehending him alone.
Sure! The CIA can always just assassinate him in exile.
Yes. I would do it, and after he stepped down you could assassinate him.
Think about it. How many lives would that save?
yeah, since he had nothing i would have supported the nation doing that. especially since so many “reports” said that he refused to negotiate. another lie…and look how we’ve paid.
Deflatez said it right.
No, because even from exile he could share and encourage the use of those weapons of mass destruction.
No
I don’t think so.. He is not a person to be trusted that he will keep those information to himself..
exile doesn’t have a history of being very effective when it comes to crazed leaders… Napoleon for one… I think there are a few others from Greco-Roman times as well… people of power and influence have ways of getting around that pesky little exile they’re put under…
in a word: no
Absolutely not.
I like him better dead…
You’re implying that the United States Government would give me the means and power to make that decision.
Until that happens, I couldn’t really say what I’d do.
1) he’s dead
2) I don’t have a billion dollars
3) I thought he didn’t have any WMD’s?
he is defeniatly not someone you can trust so no
and just by him saying that makes us know for sure that he had weapons of mass destruction
this war is just crazy
i am kinda sick of all this bickering people have of on it
“Keep information on weapons of mass destruction”
“Keep weapons of mass destruction”
Hmm.
I would somewhat try to formulate a plan to where it seemed he got everything he wanted then BAM! totally destroy him….
i think it sounds pretty great.
Doctor Claw from Inspector Gadget knows more about WMDs than this kook.
Now let’s go into how much profit we’ve made off of the war.
yes
Yes. No war. No Saddam Hussein. No weapons of mass destruction.

If you give me a billion dollars I’LL glady go into exile, and I’ll even tell you everything I know about WMDs (that should take about 10 seconds).
Anyway, no.
The War in IRAQ was based on pure lies. Saddam didn’t have any WMD….his military budget was similar to Canada’s. The US gov’t fabricated the whole thing (my blog covers a 7 part entry on the subject). For people to still support the war is complete ignorance or unthinking allegiance to a dishonest gov’t
Nice evil Saddam pic.
NO because he wouldn’t …………
He didn’t have knowledge of WMDs, or WMDs themselves.
Why not tell him he could have his money and assasinate him when he comes to pick it up???
Yeah right, exile. One of those reallly bad ones with the golf courses and bowling teams.
Making such a deal would have greatly tarnished the image of the United States if it was one that was publically done. If it was something that was worked out behind the scenes and the details were not released to the public that would be a different story, and if that was the case he could have always had a little accident down the road…
No! A dog that bites will bite again no matter how many bones he has.
No way.
No.
Only if the US could keep a really, really close eye on him while he was in exile. After all, if the whole purpose of the war was to get rid of Saddam, wouldn’t that alternative have been much easier than all the lost lives and money and chaos that has been the product of this terrible war?
Nope, you couldn’t really trust him.
yes. in a heartbeat. even if it didnt work at least we could say we did something before we pulled the trigger.
No. Duh!
NO, I would not have given Saddam Hussein a red penny. He would harrass the USA for more, or else, and get his mass destructive weapons in order, in his secret hiding place. I’ll bet he got it from our country to do that, from Bush, from the Social Security fund. There is more going out of that fund. Now the US is in debt more than $3 trillion dollars. I believe that the one behind 911, the USA – Iranian War, is that GREAT NUT in the President’s Oval Office. SO true. Why don’t the Democrats get the courage to meet that big bully head – on and impeach him correctly. Now. Anybody ever hear of the term, “Big Brother,” or how about his fictitious title, “The Beast,” from the notorious Book of Relations, written by a “prophet” John of the Island of Patmos.
…Revelations. sp.
anything to stop killing our troops and bring them home
@PraysToStJoseph - sure he is.
