I think words are words, and in any context any word can be negative. It depends on the usage.
Yes.
LOL Depends on whose mouth it comes out of. If it’s your kid, then yes.
I’m kinda torn on that. I think that if you use any word negatively toward a person, it is a sin. But slamming your finger in the car door and yelling “sh*t!”? I don’t know if that’s a sin. Seriously, if words are just words and it depends on the context, how is yelling “sh*t” any different than yelling “crap” or some other word, even “hallelujah” like some people I know do. So suffice it to say, I do not know.
hell no! haha
If it’s your kid, then yes.
umm…. why?
Four letters do not a sin make. It’s where you’re heart’s at when you say it.
How can it be a sin? Society establishes what we consider profane, and profanity is different across different cultures. Profanity is almost essential to language, in my opinion, polite or not.
I cant say I never have, but when it gets downright filthy I am not for it….although I can sling it………..
However, cursing is ugly.
Cultural
Fuck Yes!
yes, it is a sin that causes disunity because it doe not edify and lift up Christ. There is a verse about one speech but i cant remember it.. here is another one thats great
James 4:17 - ”Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn’t do it, sins.”
this verse works well for a ot of things not specifically specified in scripture
Daniel (doubledb)
doesn’t seem to be anymore. it certainly is rude and impolite in many situations.
Its not very ladylike…I’ve never said anything worse than p*ssed and @ss. I don’t even like typing swear words!! haha
RYC: You crack me up! Us Canadians were taught to share our land…hahahaha. And thanks, I’m glad you think it’s cute. I know it sounds anti-vain, but I do like my laugh lines…it means I’ve had some fun…
*HUGS*
yes on all counts .
relieve frastration!
I think it is rude and impolite…
A sin… Unless it’s taking the name of the Lord in vain… I don’t think he cares… other then it makes you look bad and direspectful to yourelf and others.
Blaspheming is and that is one of your more popular curses.
Most of it isn’t so much sin depending on its nature, but it makes the person doing it look less than intelligent and coarsens conversation in general.
retroactivegirl said it as well as it can be said, it is ugly.
Cursing, yes.
Using cuss words: no.
There is a difference between the two
I don’t think it’s a sin.
Good point, Leader of the Knights …
I work around a lot of carpenters that cuss when something goes wrong (like whacking their thumb with a hammer). Their favorite curse is to invoke the Lord’s name.
Jesus was a carpenter. I wonder if He ever hit His thumb. What did He say? “Oh, Me!!!” or maybe just, “Buddha! Bloody jumping Buddha!”
If it is, then I’m in a heap of trouble!
Happy Feisty Friday! Alicia
Eh, I’m game for whatever. I don’t want people to curse in front of my child, though.
It can be, it all depends on what you are swearing at.
No.
Words are words and for the most part are neutral. It is how you use them. You can use words to be hurtful and cruel and they don’t have to be the f-bomb, sh*t, etc.
I’m more worried about other things and I think God is too.
However I say crap alot and one day my daughter picked up her glass of water and said “Look, there’s crap in it” (it didn’t get the best washing and had some orange juice pulp in it). All I could say was “Please just don’t say that in front of Grammie. I just don’t want to deal with HER crap.”
Only if using the Lord’s name in vain. Otherwise, it just shows a lack of intelligence or flair for the use of the English (or any other) language).
Not if you say, “I ate enough damn turkey!”
I think it’s a flagrent display of intellectual bankruptcy.
I grew up baptist…
In and of itself: Most definately not. Though, to curse at someone is to be uncessarily spiteful. To do so would be slightly immoral– on par with white lies and leaving toilet seat up.
Personally, I only curse to myself and at the TV. Oh, and online. =)
Cheyenne17124
I think it’s a flagrent display of intellectual bankruptcy.
Whoa, discrimination based on diction!
To me, curse words are just another tool in the semantical toolbox. They’re just another means of highlighting ideas or intentions.
Define cursing.
it depends on which curse words. using God’s name in vain is a sin, like saying “god damn it,” but saying “shit” isn’t.
No, it relieves stress
I don’t think words are ever wrong but anything you do knowing that it will hurt someone is wrong including using certain words. So if nobody got offended by curses, they’d never be wrong. Unfortunately a lot of people are offended by curses so we have to be careful when we use them.
haha, i should hope not. otherwise i’m doomed.
Only if you take God’s name in vain. . .
Otherwise something like F*CK is just a WORD
Cursing can make you sound silly when you think about how crazy it is to hear someone who is saying *#*$*! every other word. . .but unless you’re actually cursing God no. . .
Of course if you were to say F*CK you to somebody that would be just as mean as calling them _____ I guess, but just saying say F*CK because you were annoyed. . .isn’t a sin in itself no.
Fuck no. Swearing is the truest form of expression.
RYC: A cell phone is a necessary accessory for me–I use it to run my evil empire…muahahahhahaha <—-that’s my evil laugh.
Yes, so don’t do it!
Taking God’s name in vain is breaking a commandment. The rest is just a poor choice of adjectives and interjections.
Many have said it before–using God’s name in vain is sin as defined in the Bible. Other words can be merely words. The Scriptures also say that we speak out of the overflow of our hearts. I guess the words are more of a reflection of what is in us rather than sin or not. Maybe, like other things, it could be sin for one person and not for another. I’ve just always believed that people who claim to be Christians should be renewing their minds with regularity such that the filth of the world is driven out on a periodic basis.
If we answer to a “higher power,” we need to strive to do and say what that higher power would prefer for us to do and say.
Yeah, pretty sure it is. It’s also surprisingly good anger management to cuss out whatever is bugging you (in private).
No.
The difference between cursing and using words is in how you use them. You say a donkey is an ass, well no one can call you out now can they? But you say that the douchebag sitting next to you is an ass and you’ve just cussed.
CURSING: To call down evil or harm upon someone…or something.
SWEARING: (in the negative) to call upon God in a profane solemn oath of language, for the sake of harm.
So, you go figure if this is sinful.
first amendment: Freedom of speech
currency: In God we trust
the legal system is too confusing.
No. Depends. Sometimes if that hammer hits my finger…saying SUGAR just isn’t going to happen. But most of the time I think cursing is just plain rude and crude.
Yes, I do. Plus, it makes you look uncooth.
“Hell no” and “Fuck Yes” would be great answers, but they’ve been taken.
Seriously, no.
RYC–Really? When is your special day? I hope it isn’t already past!
I don’t know, but I think it is tacky. Which is why I don’t curse often.
Not sure.
I’ve always thought it just makes people sound extremely stupid..
And it does say in the Bible not to..
Somewhere in Jeremiah I think? If anyone is interested..
Reclaiming the Mind Ministry has an excellent blog Parchment and Pen who has a blog entry that explores this issue:
I highly recommend regularly reading the blogs and checking out Reclaiming the Mnd’s theology courses online.
I think Christians need to have an informed opinion on this and this helps in the process. Instead of a simple yes it does or no it doesn’t. We need to know what scriptures say and how we apply that in the world today when language has shifted radically in even a shorter period of time.
-Ted.
I beileve that using the Lords name in vain is a sin. I like the answer LeaderOfTheKnightsWhoSayNI gave.
Cursing, yes. Using cuss words: no. There is a difference between the two
Heckz no.
hell no =)
I would thing God would take more offense at “Oh my God”, “God”, “Jesus” and other such exclamations than swearing… I don’t know if I’d consider swearing a sin, but it’s just not polite and should be done anyway. What’s the point? It makes you sound dumb and it transmits no information.
Beside I hate it when people are like, “*some swear* – I dropped my pencil!” They could have picked the stupid thing up by the time they are done whining about it. Does it matter, anyhow? In the grand scheme of things does your bloody pencil hitting the floor make a difference? Uhh.. no.
Didn’t we do this one before?
well, we are responsible for every word the leaves our mouth… particularly taking the Lord’s name in vain (and that’s not cultural)
but it is also a sin if you cuss knowing it offends someone who’s in earshot- especialy if you do it on purpose with the intent to sin- and God sees the heart so there’s no fooling him there
F*** no!
Hell, no…but then it depends on what you call cursing. Cussing someone(example: “you son of a bitch”) is not a sin.
Taking God’s name(Example: GD.GFD) is a sin
just the word “Damn” is not the sin
Cursing(Example: ”I hope you rot in hell”. “I hope you die”) Is a sin. I sinned once by saying to someone”I hope you drown”. He did that day. It was his 16th birthday, and I was 12. I know I am forgiven, but for years I carried the guilt of his death.
How do you define “sin”? If you think words and moral guidelines are just cultural constructs, then you would say it depends on the culture you are in. If you claim to be a Christian and use the Bible as a guide to the moral life, then there is plenty of reason to believe that the act of speaking can be a sin (Eph 5:4). Wasting the mind God gave you by being satisfied with the limited vocabulary of a foul-mouthed Smurf could, by some, be considered a sin.
Other than blasphemy no, but it still shouldn’t be done. I have yet to master this matter myself.
I don’t think so
i think i have lost sight of that…it has lost it’s effect on me…
i swear.. but only at home or in a comfort zone NEVER in Business!!Never!!!
I have noticed how many people swear… i am amazed at what some professional people will say …in the course of business!!
I have also lost sight of that due to the population i work with…
i look at it from a disrespect point of view and i try to get the kids to make better choices…
if they talk like that to a cop they will get more than they bargained for .
it is also a stress outlet for kids like that…
unfortunately it does not mean the same to the younger generation…just words…
knowing where and when is important i think…
WOW lots of thoughts in that lil comment ! LOL
Perhaps not, but it does call into question one’s competence with the English language, and at the very least it demonstrates the kind of poor breeding reminiscent of what one would expect from someone who was born in a barn.
What kind of question is this? Everybody has sweared at least once no matter how much they deny it. That’s why the words exist in every single language. You will find swear words, and that proves that human beings are always prone to feel frustration and need to relieve themselves of the tension in any situation. Sin is something you’re not supposed to do. And well, we need to swear sometimes. People need to get over it. So no, cursing is by no means a sin.
if it is, then I’m screwed.
I mean if cursing is meant as swearing.
Besides, I think I’d be very annoyed if someone caught a swear in my entry and tells me I have sinned. People don’t care even if they’re told they’ve sinned, especially in speech.
No I don’t believe it is Dan. The context it is being used in maybe, for example if you are swearing at another person that would be some kind of sin right? On the other hand cursing has a use, for example the psychological release of swearing in certain situations or in art or to more powerfully express yourself.
I do have a problem with the fact that many young mean my age use curse words as every second to third word, and I’m not exaggerating. In this context it displays a lack of class I think. Sometimes I have to powerfully restrain myself from addressing people that or even mocking them. At this point I typically realise that the guys in question are usually bigger than me and at least outnumber me. Anyway, walking up to strangers and judging them at random isn’t very classy either.
No, heh.
I just wish I did it less. Makes me look less classy.
Yes, if it is taking God’s name in vain.
It depends on whom you curse!
Are you talking about obscentiy, vulgarity, profanity, or blasphemy?
“Cursing” is to vague for a clear answer.
If it is, I am going *straight* to heck.
You better ******* believe it is.
James 3:10 – Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
Psalm 100:18 – As he clothed himself with cursing like as with his garment, so let it come into his bowels like water.
No. I don’t believe in sinning.
I kinda live by this rule: would I do/say it in church? Or more importantly, in front of Jesus? If not, I steer clear of it in every day life as much as I possibly can.
ha… words… are words… are words… each one has a meaning… so i would say its more of a folkway…
its more of a heart issue then the actual word… cuz u can say darn an mean damn… so… its really about the meaning intended…
YES
i think its all on the intentions of the heart. i cuss. i’m not too proud of it, but i do.
Yes cursing is a sin…….. Bible states, be ye HOLY for I am HOLY… how can you be HOLY with a foul mouth????????
no not cursing but cursing god
Fuck yes. Obviously.
swearing is uncool man. just like smoking
Context is king. My two biggest concern are a) is it said in anger and b) will the people hearing you say it automatically associate your words with “wrong”?
I think immaturity desires a list of okay words and not okay words, which misses out on the “spirit of the law.”
No, words are words. That’s all they are.
Yes, its rude!
Only if you swear while in bed doing the nasty with a member of the same sex.
aside of Godd@%#, no
I think people who don’t curse have limited vocabularies.
everything’s a sin these days
not a sin, but not good…
Yes, the Scriptures say “remove all filthy talk from your mouth” and it also says whoever calls his brother Raca (meaning idiot or moron) is in danger of hellfire.
Fuck no
I don’t curse that much so I never thought about it… but yes, because when I curse when I lose my composure… >.<
I don’t think it’s a sin. I think it’s stupid to blatantly cuss just because you think it makes you look cool. It doesn’t. They’re just words.
I don’t like it either when people say that those who curse are less intelligent than those who do. I cuss like a sailor if in the right context (close friends, on my own site), and I’d like to think that I am, at the very least, of decent intelligence.
than those who don’t*
Guhhhh.
Cursing itself is not a sin unless you take the name of the Lord in vain. And you certainly DO NOT want to curse or blaspheme the Holy Spirit! Swear words (the usual ones) are only expressions. The problem comes in with verses in scripture that talk about letting our words be pleasant and sweet like honey, avoiding anything that might appear evil, your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit – so obviously you would want to treat it right. Those are all things followers of Christ would be held to. Just throwing that out there.
No, but I don’t really believe in sin either.
If you’re goal is following Jesus, ask yourself, if Jesus came back and hung out with us and spoke in the english language, would he use these words? The answer to me is crystal clear.
No. They’re just words. And to me, they’re not ugly, they’re not unladylike, there’s nothing wrong with it.
Again, they’re just words.
I it a sin to use words we create?
Is not I*
a venial sin.
well like literal cursing…according to the bible yes. just dropping the f bomb or whatnot, no…though it is crude….which is often the point
Straying away from your question – swear words make it difficult for me to listen to a person. I feel that they have an angry heart and are a bit unintelligent.
I agree with ClosetNinja. It depends on its context. That said, I think using God’s name in vain is a sin. It’s worse than cussing. However, I think the word “fuck” in just about any context would be a sin, because it has filthy implications of something that was created to be holy.
I don’t know… in the larger scheme of things, I don’t think it matters much. Lately I’ve been wondering if my swearing has been affecting my mood or perspective on things… but I’m pretty sure it’s the other way around. Still, if I feel like it’s becoming too much of a habit, or if I sound like I’m trying to swear too much, I’ll make a conscious effort to get out of the habit of it, but beyond that, I’m not going to spend all my energy worrying about something that isn’t specifically mentioned in the Bible anyway. I think the reasons behind why a person swears is more important and needs closer monitoring than the actual swearing. That said, if I know it will offend someone around me I stay away from it too, out of mere respect.
Not a sin, but crude.
Like pretty much all words, it depends on context and usage.
> Only when damning something or one in the name of god, the rest is just rude, depending on the company.
peace
I dont think it is a sin necessarily, but I believe that some of the words are blasphame….
No, just not nice.
In the Bible it specifically says that swearing is a sin.
Ironically the Bible has the word ass in there a lot…. I suppose ass being a cuss word was a recent thing, eh?
“yes, it is a sin that causes disunity because it does not edify and lift up Christ. There is a verse about one speech but i cant remember it.. here is another one thats great

this verse works well for a lot of things not specifically specified in scripture
Daniel (doubledb)”
Wow. I think he hit it right on target there. Thank you!
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” Ephesians 4:29
There’s another good verse for you.
All foul mouthed language is sin…as my mother says “if you don’t have anything good to say don’t say it!”
taking the Lord’s name in vain is a sin… at least according to the Bible… swearing is a much more complex issue
All I know is that Jesus wouldn’t say curse words. So that makes it a sin.

There is a verse about one speech but i cant remember it.. here is another one thats great
James 4:17 - ”Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn’t do it, sins.”
this verse works well for a lot of things not specifically specified in scripture
