  • Interview

Would you rather show up to a job interview as a black person or as a Hispanic person?

  • A black person. I feel they are more empowered in this society today, especially in the tri state area.

  • Woo

    Second

  • Number 2 =]

  • Woo, was I really the first comment? Go me.

Really, I don’t know. I think both could be either good or bad, depending on the racism.

  • haha sorry pinkrockstar

  • Maybe not…lol

    Probably black…

  • what kind of question is this? I think a black person if I would have to choose

  • ‘Tis ok.

    Maybe another day. Lol

  • Hispanic, as long as the language skills come with the magical transformation.

  • I really don’t know. Hispanic? Living in East L.A., I’ve been exposed to more of them.

  • i agree with saintvi if the language is thrown in, but if not I’d go with black

  • It so depends on the job. Stereotypes being what they are, you must play to them.

But the fact is, if I were of another race, I would still be me.  I would have the same talents and accomplish the same things in the end no matter what color I might be

  • Does it really matter? Why are looks so important in our society today?

  • i wouldn’t care.  white people are shady where i live, so are black people, and asian people. and hispanic people.  no one is exempt from shady-ness, and as a result unlikely for employment.  so i just want to be me still who is un-shady!

  • Well the blacks have Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson to get pissed off and create a global scene if I didn’t get hired, meanwhile the hispanics don’t have anyone.  Thus, I’d say it depends on how much unwarranted anger, backlash and psychotic yelling I wanted to see and on what scale.

  • why? racist??  I, as all of us should be, would rather just be me, no matter what race.

  • Can I opt for a phone interview and skip the stereotypes?

  • I agree with Peteismyhero.

  • MIX! bwahahahaha

  • Personally, no preference. However, from the standpoint of actual power, I’d say black.

  • I’d like to go in as an Aussie.

  • a black guy who speaks spanish

  • More employers understand spanish than ebonics

  • That and hispanics work harder

  • As…myself? o.O

  • I am hispanic. :)

    Turns out fine for me.

  • that’s a racist question. I’d probably go as a black person though.

  • A black man raised up in spain.

    ’nuff said…

  • I know it’s supposed to be hypothetical, but I can’t help but think that if I showed up at a job interview a different race than I was when I woke up in the morning, I would be so confused it’d be bad for me no matter what :P

  • Hmmm, well I’m from the South, and if I were in my hometown, I would much rather come to the table black than Hispanic.  There’s a lot of tension about the legality of many Hispanics, which just opens up a whole new can of worms.  And accent is another issue too…

    But yeah.  In short, black.

  • Depends on the job. As a musician, it’s either put up or shut up, so the color of skin is irrelevant. What matters at the interview (audition) is simple: Are you an artist?

  • A black one…….

  • None of those…I notice that hot female get in easier than a male.

  • So the question you’re asking is “who do you think has more civil power in American society?” I’d say probably black. It’s unfortunate that many people see a hispanic and immediately think of illegal immigrants.
    -David

  • In my area?  Black.

  • That is really hard to say

They both are at the disadvantage, but I guess I would have to go with the hispanic.

  • I have the fabulous ability to show up as a lovely latina every single time.

  • Black.  Definitely less of a disadvantage, as Hispanics (well, Mexicans, at least) have that stereotype of being lazy.

  • Hispanic.

The hardworker stereotype works in our favor.

We are mostly hard workers, and those that aren’t fall under the hardworker blanket.

  • black, cos i already show up hispanic.
    .
    .
and this is a hilarious question, Dan!!

  • I’ve never had any kind of problem showing up any kind of interview as a mexican. I’ve been doing it all my life and it’s worked out just fine. So… why should it matter?

  • Well technically I am hispanic but you can’t tell.  Does that count?

  • > I’d have to agree with Coleslaw_From_Hell, there’s too much emphasis on illegal immigration these days, and as has been said, ‘Black Power, rising…’

    Peace

  • Wtf????

  • Hmm. I don’t know.

    Probably black.

  • black

You’re video is screwing up my loading of the page.

  • I’d like to show up as myself (Hispanic) but having a name like Tyrone Ashani Cooper on the application…just to see the reaction I’d get.

  • I have to say as a chinese….lawl

  • depends… do I speak English, ebonics, or spanish?

If I speak English, then black.

  • This is kind of racy haha…. Probably black person. They get treated like they have to be compensated for their color, so in certain areas, they’ll get the job that they company can’t give to a white man…. where as Hispanics are treated like scum when it comes to their pay check and get screwed over because they’ll work for nothing because to them it’s something.

  • I’m not racist
My best friend is Black and I grew up in a black community, and my mother’s family is all from Puerto Rico and I loveee the latin music

  • I don’t know. both of them have had racist assholes giving them a bad name. I’m talking about people like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton trying to say that all black people should be racist. And then the Mexicans who raise their flag above ours dishonouring their people cause trouble for the hispanics. With all this crying out for minorities to be racist, I would find it hard to be one of them

  • What are you trying to say?

  • In this area? It would be better to be a black person.  Hispanics are seen as lower class citizens around here.  There is less prejudice towards black people in my part of the country.

  • If I could speak Spanish with the race change, I’d be hispanic.
    Otherwise?  I don’t care.

  • What do I get if I guess it right?

    Just joking. Hispanic, of course.

  • Neither.  I’d rather show up as myself!!

  • I already show up as an unexpected race at interviews.  My current firm, I had 2 phone interviews first.  Then I came in for the face to face… lets note here.. persian first name, asian last name = red haired white looking girl.

The hiring manager actually said, “oh  you are so not what I expected you to look like!”

But as to your question.. I’d like to show up as a black man, so I can match my drivers license.  (TXDOT sent me a replacement license 2 years ago. My info was correct, but the picture was a black mans)

  • I’d rather show up as a qualified person and get the job!  Let’s stop pigeonholing people.

  • I’d have to go with a smooth-headed and very gay black guy that speaks both Spanish and Russian. I think that’d cover my bases quite well, plus I wouldn’t have that awkward effect. I think. Then again, I think I’d just be happy to have an interview.

  • Black…

Dammit Dan, I have an interview today. Thanks for the nerves.

  • Fascinating question!  I have no idea.  Of course, I’m thinking, “Which one would receive less prejudice?”  That in itself is telling.

  • White. I’m no fool.

  • Ah, you’re fine. :)

And regarding this entry’s question: Black

  • well seeing as how my husband just missed getting a great job due to affirmative action: either.

  • This is a weird question.  I am thinking….it would depend on the job.

  • Depends on the job.  If it’s a technical job that requires higher level education and some sort of level of skill represented by either grades or years of experience, then it doesn’t matter.  If it’s a job any fool with a high school diploma, that can tie their shoes every day and dress appropiately, then it still doesn’t matter because as long as either the black or hispanic speak and act like a stereotypical white american then there are very little prejudices from people.

Stereotypical white american – Speaking without any accent, and nearly perfect grammatically correct english.  Using common 1950′s figures of speech.  Dressing like a model from the Sears catalog or better.

  • I am stumped. I wouldn’t ever have to choose. Besides I am pretty comforable in my own skin. So I guess I would go as my self…

  • Hispanic. I think African-Americans still face more racism.

  • What’s the job??

  • Well, since I’m black, I guess I’d like to show up as a black person.

  • black. my best friend is black, so that may have something to do with it.

  • I do not know.  I am stuck with this pale complexion many of us caucasions have.  I think I would look better as a fairly dark skinned hispanic, maybe.

  • I agree with DingyDarla, who isn’t really so dingy it sounds like.

  • Go one girl army!

    Good answer SunnyMitsu!

  • Maybe you should ask people to explain why.

  • as a white male

notice how 98% of all CEOs, CFOs, C#Os are white?

if thats not an advantage, i dont know what is!

  • This is a really odd question. But my BF is Hispanic so I’ll go with Hispanic.

  • Since I have some hispanic origins (Cuba), I think I woudl prefer to be myself.

  • Or perhaps a person 60 or older!

  • Hispanic probably, but I’m not racist toward black people.

  • what kind of effing question is this & where did it come from?
all the racism in the world & this question builds up? =
it`s allllllllllll the same at the end of the day.

  • Hispanic.
:] So I could pretend to be illegal, work for less and get hired FIRST.

    Jaykay.

  • Dan… you dissapoint me.

How could you ask a racist question like that? You’re an embarrasement. And then you said you love everybody.

  • By the way by LAW if the employer doesn’t hire you because of your nationality and race, That Employer is FUCKED! This is 2007, not 1957! Thank you!!!

  • I’d have to say black. No boss wants to hire an illegal- Even if you aren’t, you’ll like one to most racist whites.

But I want to be one of those black people who was born in Britain and has that perfect speaking and cool accent!

                 – Kare

  • hispanic, hahaha one of their steroetypes is being a hardworker….and let’s face it….you have to play up the sterotypes….

  • Sorry but this is the dumbest question you have ever posted on your blog.  What gives?

  • Belated Happy Birthday!

    You are diligent sending blogs!

    Blessings,

    Sally

  • Black … but this Q kinda stumped me.

  • I still don’t understand racism

  • Since I work at a LIQUER STORE, I’d rather show up as a hispanic.   My boss, as nice as he is, does profile the people that come into our store.  He is always 10x more suspicious of our black customers, simply because we have had people steal in the past and they were black.  Also, he knows that the hispanics around where our store is would be willing to pay the 60$+ for tequilla and be happy about it.   Now if I were still with C******C***, I would rather be black because its a fact that most of the shoplifting that went/still goes on there is done by hispanics.  I guess it really all depends on what type of job you’re going for.
