I just finished driver’s ed and I really have no idea.
yes
Waitno, guylygirl’s got it right. ^^;
Yeah, I would. But my boyfriend would block him in, saying “Stupid j*ck*ss should’ve gotten over sooner!” … Road-rage is an issue with him, which is why I prefer driving on the long trips we take.
I think it depends who is going faster. If I’m going faster, then I’ll cruise on by, but if I’m going slower then I’ll let him go faster.
no… cause what you don’t see is car b-z behind us…
and that nigger of a car a decided to merge later than everyone else and cut them off.
so fuck ‘em.
Yes because I don’t want to get hit. But I’d probably yell at him.
omg. Its not often that I see the N-word in your comments section. I would probably slow down, but if my boyfriend were riding with me he would say “You should have gotten into the other lane if you had room. What if someone is behind you?”
depends on car B’s speed
of course because I would have noticed the lane ends sign that is always way ahead of the actual merge!
That depends if I have my brick with me.
that depends on how far back the sign was. If he could’ve moved in a long time ago and didn’t, I would purposefully block him out. If he was genuinely caught off guard, and i could do so without getting rear-ended, i’d let him in.
YES. There is an intersection in Asheville that is just AWFUL, there is hardly any room whatsoever to merge. People who don’t know this area stay in the left lane and it is really quite dangerous. The other day I had to go through this intersection (it’s 26 merging into 240) and the car in the lane I had to merge into was just going the exact same speed I was, and I couldn’t speed up because someone was in front of me going like 4 mph and so I would hit them and I ended up being run up to the end and had to STOP, and the person who wasn’t slowing down or letting me in looked at me like I was crazy, but it was their fault in the first place for being in the dang left hand lane and not getting over or at least slowing down for me. I finally got merged in when the traffic opened up. But it really sucks.
I guess it would all really depend if I were driving very fast, and who was in the car with me. I tend to be a lot less caring of other cars around me when I drive by myself, but if I have company in the car with me, I tend to drive a bit more conservative and are far more passive about getting places in a hurry. I don’t want other people to think I am a terrible driver, despite how much I very well may be.
yes, because I’m very nice
No, because we both saw the same sign a mile ago and he/she had all kinds of time to either speed up and overtake me or slow down and merge.
Most likely.
Hell’s no, he’d just slow me down.
If there’s room behind me, yeah probably.
It’s better to keep your speed so that car can more easily predict what your car is doing and can adjust. If there was a lane to the right of me, I’d move over – ’cause that’s friendly AND a solution.
Yes
I would change lanes, since there’s another one.
yea most likely
NO!! just kidding. i don’t have my license yet, so…this sort of sucks.
If I could, I would change lanes. If he’s an idiot and was just trying to get ahead of everyone else by not switching lanes sooner, then I would try to cut him off and would probably honk/flick him off.
Well there are many things that would determine my decision in this situation and would make my decision accordingly…
Probably. I’m usually car A though and I just haul ass.
yes.
Depends on how fast both cars are moving – if A and B were moving the same speed I’d likely slow down.
Depends on how long the merge lane is and if he raced up there to butt in,but almost always I let them in.I try to keep the flow of traffis going and to be courteous.
fuck, no. but then, i’m a bitch that way.
I shift one lane over, and gripe about that guy being a fool the whole time I am doing so.
This would totally depend on the drivers actions… did they maintain the consistent speed and indicate that they needed to get over with the merge or did they put some stunt like flying up the lane knowing it was merging and looking to get ahead a few car lengths.
I would let the first guy merge over… the other guy is the type I would rather see sitting in that spot screwed because no one will let them over.
And I’m a VERY polite driver.
Hugs’n'Smooches!
never
Yes.
yeah I’d let up on the gas a bit and let him in, or better yet I’d change lanes if possible
More than likely, I would. Many times it depends on whether I have a semi in back of me.
if he’s ahead of me, yes… if not he has to yield.
I’d speed up.
Usually yes… but sometimes it depends on the quality and quantity of bumper stickers the driver is sporting.
Yes.
Driver B should yield, considering the Merge sign – and the position of B in relation to A. If B was ahead of A…then, ofcourse…nope.
(I’d yield if I were B)
nope. the other car had all kinds o’ time to move over. i dislike people who wait until the last minute.
yep. because i’m friendly that way.
it all depends on my mood.
I don’t have much choice. The idiot is going to push his way in anyway, and if I don’t give him the room he needs, he’ll take it anyway, and I run the risk of an insurance claim – which in Michigan, basically means – you’re screwed.
I would let him in. Even if he is being a jerk, and just trying to get in front of everyone, I think Jesus would let him in and so I think I should too. Since I’m a Christian, and all that jazz.
I don’t believe Dan wants the PC answers. If the had time to get over previously, no!
no. i’m an asshole.
Yes, because they’re an idiot for not paying attention to all the signs telling him to merge sooner. So I would let him get in front of me because then I wouldn’t be worrying about him rear-ending me.
It happens all the time here. American tourists do stuff like that regularly. You get used to it. Fortunately you can see their plates and know to just get out of their way.
If the other lane is clear, I move on over…if not….I usually slow down and let him in. I am a nice driver!!
I’d move over into that empty lane.
So which car were you in, Dan? : )
maybe. depends on how fast i’m going.
Yes!
Depends on how fast I was going. If I was going fast enough that he wouldn’t have to brake much, then I’d probably speed up… but since he’d be in front of me, I’d probably slow down. If his car was behind mine, I’d speed up.
Assuming I’ve room behind me, sure.
prob not. especially bc i he has a better car than me. but he would prob speed up and get in anyway
nope but we all drive like assholes here and likely car a was behind me and right as the passing possibility ended tried to get ahead of me.
yes, it helps traffic move better and safer.
it depends on the situation
yes. either i’m driving in LA where the drivers are crazy and you dont want to piss anyone off or out in the boonies where the country folk are polite and you let people in or you look like a jerk.
The current relative speeds of the cars isn’t in the data. But assuming car A wasn’t going painfully slowly, it would be better defensive driving to slow down.
i usually can’t see their signal in that position so no
you flip him the bird and go n your merry way!
Yes…it’s like a zipper and the car slightly ahead is first. I can’t recall ever having to merge right though…it’s always been left.
If car A has ever had a driving lesson, it’s supposed to wait until the lane clear and then enter. As well, car A shouldn’t even be on that lane. It was supposed to stay on the right and obviously, there’s no left turn just yet. So no, i wouldn’t let car A pass because it would allow car A to continue breaking driving rules (which is not good).
Plus it doesn’t seem Car A would even make it even if i slowed down, unless it’s going 40 and i’m going like, 5.. which would mean i would impede traffic.
**the lane is clear
Depends on the weather, to be honest..
Yes.
When driving in NJ, I would accelerate and try to cut him off only to let him in once he had driven on the shoulder for a half mile. In most other locations, I would let the person in.
I hate driving in New Jersey, but if you show weakness by letting in a car the other driver can smell it and will continue to beat yuo with the stick of aggressive driving.
No, I would not slow down. Car A (the red car) took a risk. I have to make sure that he suffers the concenquences.
(In actuailty, I’m a safe/timid driver. Even if I do have the mean-spiritedness, for me to drive recklessly goes against my grain. =/ )
Drivers Ed. says I have to.
Well, if it’s that soon after the sign, then yeah I most likely would. I just hate it when people expect to merge long after multiple warning signs.
Every time I let somebody merge (And I slow down accordingly), they slam on their breaks and I find myself speeding back up again to keep up with traffic So, I’d floor it without thinking twice about it ‘The wrong answer’, sure, but the safer one knowing Atlanta’s drivers
Yes but only if Car A was at least trying to go the speed limit.
I got a sore head, I have no idea since I dont drive and have not read the highway code in the UK or for any other country.
I would not slow down, but I would not speed up either. It is not Car B’s obligation to let Car A over in this situation. However, the courteous thing to do would be for Car B to get into the right lane if possible. If that is not possible, tough luck Car A. YOU SHOULD HAVE PLANNED BETTER!
Yes.
no, i would maintain my speed and keep an eye on car A… if i slow down, i’ll just confuse him.. better to let him do what he needs to do, and pretend not to notice until something dangerous happens…
yeah, but id be pissed off.
yes. I would only hope someone would for me.
It is the car to the left obligation to merge safely, ether by acceleration of deceleration, it does not have right of way in this situation. The car to the right is not to so insist on it’s right of way, as to hit the other car.
Me, I would let the the car in, as someone has to not be an asshole. Its just driving, not a manhood contest.
I would let them in, and then say “fuck you” in my head.
If it is exactly how the diagrm is? yes. Specially since car B is in car A’s blind spot.
No, they’re going to have to find their own opening. I’m not going to slow down when there’s like a whole bunch of other cars right behind me. I don’t want them to run into me. Though if Car A is going faster than I am, chances are I’m going to let them in because I don’t want to get hit, or I’ll probably just switch over to the next lane if there’s room.
I would let him in and the only time where I would not him in is when he is greedy.
Various factors affect my decisions in such a matter.
Probably. Depends on how I was feeling that day. :]
I usually do if there’s not a car behind me riding my bumber !
I usually do as a courtesy and where I live it is certainly not the norm
as fast as i drive, nobody has tried to get in front of me like that =) problem eliminated.
I dunno…
Yes…as long as car A didn’t do something farther back that was rude.
oh wait, I would move over into the right hand lane if that was an option
most likely i will…
Yea, cuz I’m a southern. We are known for our hospitality.
Depends on the day LOL
well…. no i wouldn’t. when i start driving im probably gonna be an asshole like my brother.
“fearless driving!”
Nope.
Of course–
Pretty sure that if car B did that the other day, car A wouldn’t have crashed into unspoken oncoming car C and killed the driver, a 21 year old boy, I believe.
yes.
I see that everyday on the way home from work – not only do I rarely let them in — usually there is a Big Rig riding the line on the left not letting the idiots pass them — The times I let them in, is when traffic is backed up and there has been little or no chance for them to get over — but usually they have had PLENTY of time to get over and they don’t so I make them sit
Probably.
yes
YES! I fricken hate when people are jackasses while merging.
yes. but i get stinking pissed off if they don’t say thank you. HOW HARD IS IT TO SAY THANK YOU!? omgg. i let people in all the time and so far, i’ve only gotten like 2 thanks.
and it makes me made when they see the sign, and they want to come in. its like. u should changed lanes along w/ me. stupid. but i let them in anyways. and they go off and speed off w/o saying thanks
as you can see. i have more of a problem of people not saying thank you. then people cutting me off.
Depends on other traffic, but probably not.
yeah… i’m such a push-over especially on the highway – it’s scary!
> That would depend on how soon I saw them, and my speed at the time I overtook them. For the most part, Yes….
Peace
If I am in the good mood, I would let him in.
Of course!
Depends on how fast the car was going. Normally if they’re not doing the speed limit, I’d speed up and leave it to the person behind me. However I’m not going to slam on my breaks and get rear-ended just to let someone in.
Yes, it’s the safe (and polite) thing to do. I’d probably try to just change lanes, though.
yes…
no. I’d speed up. I have the right of way! he can wait
Entirely situational depending on other variables not present in your scenario.
Most definately!
I think car B has the right of way; would A have to wait until car B passed? (I think it’s safer to wait until car B passed)
yes, it’s the law in cali
It depends on how fast he is going and if I think he is going to merge regardless if I let him or not. If he is slowing down dramatically then I’m not going to slow down for him to merge, if he looks like he is going at the same speed or faster than me then I will probably slow down for him to merge and if he looks like he is going to merge regardless then of course I’m going to slow down and honk my horn
Just because I don’t get to do it that often, I’ll just say ditto to RaVnR.
Yes, I would, assuming that I have room to do so. I know how aggravating it can be, sitting there forever because nobody will allow you to merge.
Sincerely, T.
Yeah, sure.
I’d get in the other lane to make room, but it’s A’s responsibility to slow and MERGE not cut people off.
The right lane seems clear and the white line means that it is legal to use that for my direction, so I would pull into that one so neither of us feel awkward or I if that was not an option I would gauge their speed and if they are going much slower, speed up and get past them or if they are about the same or a bit faster i would slow down so they could get around me. It is all situational dan, but if I felt it was the best, yes, I would slow down.
haha, it depends… Was car A already in front of me at the time? Or was Car A one of those A-holes who goes up from a mile back just to get in front of all of the traffic? If car A was already in front of me at the time, I’ll let the driver through. If Car A was one of those cars who just drive past all the cars in traffic just to get ahead I won’t. lol.
If she’s already been riding my blind spot for the past quarter mile and now she’s attempting to cut me off? Nope, she doesn’t get in. But if she obviously made a mistake and didn’t know the lane was ending and has her blinker on and I’m at a reasonable rate of speed in which I could slow down without causing a traffic catastrophe? Okay.
ONLY if they signal their intention to move into MY lane. They passed the “left lane ends” sign awhile back and had time to either speed up and merge freely or slow down and merge freely. Their failure to plan ahead does not constitute an emergency to me.
no way, he would have had room to get over before i got there….unless it was an exit, then i would switch lanes if i had room
Official answer according to Kentucky Drivers Safety course, which I have taken 3 times due to speeding. The car in the lane that continues is to hold their speed right where they are. The lane that is ending is the lane that is performing the merge. It is the merging car that must speed up or slow down according to the flow of traffic in the lane into which they are merging. If the car in the continuing lane speeds up or slows down, that creates confusion or doubt about what action the merging car should take. It is that confusion and doubt that causes traffic jams and accidents. Now there is also the polite thing which is to determine if the lane next to you is free when you are in the continuing lane. If it is you MAY change to that lane. It is not required. Here is why, if you are on cruise control and going a consistant speed, the car merging may simply come in and squat in the space you were driving in. If you move to the fast lane and the merging car comes in a squats where you were driving, then you are required now to speed up or slow down to get back in the lane you were in as to not congest the fast lane. Therefore, I say when in doubt, stay your course and make them drive around you. They know where you are, how you are driving, and where you will be. They can then make a knowledgeable decision on how to merge.
Yes… if car A is attempting to make a move to get in front of me, I’ll give them the right of way.
If they slow down at any time, I’m not letting them in.
It depends.
If car A is going at a decent speed so I don’t have to slam my brakes, then sure. But if there’s no one behind me he can wait to get over after I pass.
And if this is one of those times when you’re in heavy traffic and car A is one of those a-holes that purposefully gets into the left lane just to get ahead, I’ll do everything I can to prevent him getting ahead of me. Why is his time that much more valuable than mine?
That picture looks wrong to me…My answer depends on a lot of things-my mood, if I am running late, weather conditons, etc.
Here is the answer to everyone else that has a inferiority complex:
When you see a merge like this(assuming there are only two lanes), get over to the left lane and drive at the exact same speed as that of the right lane. Stick to the left lane all the way up to where the lanes become one. By doing this, the whole time you have not moved positions relative to the right lane. You also have prevented other cars from barreling through on the left lane and avoided this merge situation for the cars ahead of you. At the same time, the cars behind you on the left lane will have no choice but to begin to merge as they are suppose to in a “zipper” fashion.
The catch: The car on the right lane immediately behind you must recognize that you have not aggressively passed other cars. Therefore, in most cases (at least for me) they let you merge even though you are merging at the last possible spot. The upside is that you were all traveling the same speed, so this doesn’t have a slow down effect on traffic.
NO!
as you can see we are both on the wrong side of the road going in the wrong direction. cars c-z are flying toward me and for some reason my partner is crime is also going the wrong way down the highway. i dont know why that is, but it prolly has something to do with running from the cops. and the last thing on my mind as i dodge cars is, “hmm should i slow down or speed up, so my friend can be as big an idiot as i am!”
assuming you are in britian or some other left side driving country, you should really ask them.
Yes, for two reasons.
1) It’s the nice thing to do 2) If I don’t, car A may turn out to be a jerk and try to force their way into my lane anyway. So yielding is also the safer thing to do.

Depends on the day
LOL
well…. no i wouldn’t. when i start driving im probably gonna be an asshole like my brother.
Sincerely,
T.
1) It’s the nice thing to do
2) If I don’t, car A may turn out to be a jerk and try to force their way into my lane anyway. So yielding is also the safer thing to do.
