  • Future

    This question is from X_jshawty18_X:

If you had a chance to get a one-second glimpse of your future, would you take that chance?

  • Hell yeah, and I better see me as a space pirate!

  • It’ll get here soon enough.   I’m in no hurry.     After all, it’s only one second.

  • Without a doubt. Are people really so afraid of seeing a glimpse?

  • No.

Negligable information could be taken from a 1 second glimpse. It is also very easy to take that glimpse out of context and to act and ponder on this incorrect information.

  • aaaaawwwwwww yyyyyyyeeeeeeaaaaahhhhhh.

  • yes, because it’s not everything and getting a little info doesn’t hurt.

  • It’s a yes and no answer for me. I would like to find out if I would be successful or not so I can be ready for it. But I’m worried that IF I am successful, the rest of my life will consist of making sure that it happens and being paranoid over screwing my chances up. I never actually get to enjoy the moment either because it ruins the surprise. =P

  • Yup, but I’m insatiably curious.

@huginn - Intellectually, I must agree with you.

  • That would be awesome. So yes.

  • No, because I could easily take that one second out of context, and expect something much better, much worse, or at least very different from what is actually ahead of me.

However, if I could get an entire day’s glimpse into the future, I’d be tempted to.

  • oO( isnt it forced on us when we get that feeling of deja vu?)

if i had the time, yes.

  • Wouldn’t that be drastically out of context?

  • Sure, because knowing me, I’d blink and miss it.

  • Man, wouldn’t it suck if the one second was of you taking a dump? Seems like a waste.

  • I don’t want to look at a coffin.

  • I’ve seen my Grandparents, glimpse enough for me.

  •   Each choice and action affects the future so if I did take that glimpse then my future would now be altered .  Nope.  I don’t want to look at it.  It doesn’t exist anymore.

  • Depends on if we had the ability to affect (and thus change) this one-second glimpse.

  • Without the assurance that my interpretation of that one second would be accurate, there would be no point.

  • LOL, I just thought of the time at a job interview when they asked “Where do you see yourself in 10 years?” I replied “Dead…” then thought for a few seconds, “Yeah… most likely dead.”

    I didn’t get the job.

  • What could you witness in a second?

I’d still would not want to though.

  • …my luck i would blink. hahah

  • yes.

  • Haven’t you seen that movie “paycheck”?

You’re not supposed to see into the future, because then it’s like it’s set into stone, and you can’t change anything, even when it’s bad.

It’s better to live life not knowing what will happen, but taking it day by day.

  • nope- i like to just take things as they come

  • No, because what if something happens along the way to change it?

  • I abhor fate and predestination with every ounce of my wit. I would not allow myself the horror of realizing everything is predetermined. No way!

  • My old grandfather  used to say that if we all knew what was before us in life, the rivers wouldn’t hold the people who would jump in them! However, God tells us, ‘You know the plans I have for you. Pleans for good and not evil, plans to prosper and not to harm, pland for a hope and a future.

  • YES. It’ll be exciting.

  • Now, is this me getting one entire second to analyze a second of my future? or is it that I get one second of the future, and I can fully analyze it to get a semi-accurate idea of what’s in hold for me?

    Maybe.

  • abso-fucking-lutely! Could give me some hope at the moment. Or at the very least, motivation.

  • No…I am happy of my boring life, no need to take a peek.

  • Nope, one second would only show you a piece of what your entering, sorta like when you over hear someone saying something about you, and in the next second they telling someone that what they had heard or something like that. You wouldnt hear anything good or see anything good I’m sure.

  • I need a sec to think about this….*smiles*

  • My initial thought was yes.  However, huginn made a good point.

  • No for these reasons:

1.) What could I possibly gain from seeing only one second in my future?  I could happen to see myself in a really desireable position (which may lead me to believe that my future is all peachy when it was the only moment of happiness) or I could see myself in a very poor situation (and lead me to believe that the future is very crappy when in reality it was just a bad moment).  The information gained would be out of context.
2.) If I know what will happen to me in the future, I know it will happen.  Because if I glimpsed the future at point A and then had the ability to correct it or achieve it, then the future I saw at A will not exist, and then the future I saw at point A will be different, which would mean the directions I took will not happen, therefore having the future revert to the original….and then the loop continues.  Therefore if such a glimpse was afforded, then the future is known and cannot be changed or else a paradox occurs.  Why take a glimpse into the future like some people skip to the end of the book and read the ending?  You’re going to get there eventually.
3.) I’d rather take my time getting to the future.  As is, the present is only here for a moment and gone the next.  Why try to hasten the journey when going through life?  It’s the journey that is the most important because we know that we will all die one day.  So why try to rush through life when you know that your days are numbered?

  • And a minor point, transmission of matter or information into the past by choice is impossible.  If an object or information is sent to the past, the past is altered, which then alters the course of events that lead up to the moment the item or information is sent into the past, which then alters the object or information.  The only way this is possible is if the time travel into the past will lead to the same travel event occurring in the future (which is to an extent pre-destination).

  • No. I might screw it up. . . unless i was MEANT to see that glimpse, then ok.

  • Definitely.

  • Oh sure. I would want a longer look, though.

  • It’s kind of like how in Greek tragedies when a terrible prophecy is made and everyone goes out of their way to try and prevent it from happening, but those actions are what actually makes it happen…

I’d say sure, why not? It’s going to happen anyway! What I see is a result of my looking into the future. If it sucks, well, then, it was only one second, so hopefully Future Me was just having a bad day. Otherwise, sucks to be me. What am I going to do about it?

  • Nope. Never. The future is a surprise, why do I want to spoil that?

    ’nuff said…

  • no

  • I have and would again.

  • @taken_dream_41 - “deja vu” means “already seen”.  This occurs in most people when they think they have been somewhere before.  This may be caused by random hyperactivity in certain areas of the brain, remembrance of a similar place or situation, or (possibly) some yet unexplainable phenomenon.  For obvious reasons, there isn’t much research done on this.

Certain people claim to have actually experienced the future, however, by spiritually/mentally transporting to it temporarily.  This is not deja vu, but premonition (previewing).

  • @huginn - i was going to say “absolutely” but you made a very valid point… i would probably be one to obsess about whatever it was i thought i saw and end up neglecting my present.

  • nope. that causes all kinds of problems with your present self.

  • Out of sheer curiosity and against better judgement, yes yes yes!

  • No. That’s like peeking at your Christmas presents early; it takes all the fun and excitement out of Christmas morning.

  • No. I learned my lesson from reading about the Cyclops!

  • No. I’m 22.. let’s say I live another 70 years. 70 years of information is not enough to fit into 1 second. I would be left utterly confused and unsatisfied. Now, if that 1 second were stretched to 5 minutes, then maybe.

  • One second?  One second of time?  Totally not worth it.  Now, if they said I could look into the future and see the day I die, or something monumental, then yes, that would be interesting, but one second is not worth it.

  • I think I would…because it wouldn’t be anything I haven’t dreamed or visualized for myself….

  • You wouldn’t get anything comprehensible from a one second glimpse. Much less if you don’t know how soon or far away in your future it would be.

  • Nah.  If you know something is going to happen within the distant future, you run the possibility of not experiencing that future because you may do nothing, expecting something you saw to just happen.

Like, if you see an A on a test you’ll be taking, you might not study for it, thinking, oh, I’ma ace this.  and when it comes around you fail.  :P

Maybe in the alternate universe had you not looked into the future, you would of studied because you were unsure and in turn you do get that A.

  • If I could change it, yes.  Seeing a future I could not change would be odd.

  • No, because it would be my luck I’d take it out of context or my mind would play tricks on me by giving me false information.

  • I don’t think I would. I’d rather just take everything one day at a time and be surprised by the future. One second is not really that long anyway.

  • One second wouldn’t be enough!!!

  • Nope, I just don’t want to know.  I’ll find out soon enough.

  • Suppose it weren’t just for a second, but a real glimpse of my future. I’d like to see if I like what I’ve done with my life. Maybe I can do something now to get there sooner or improve my future. Like eat right and exercise to avoid any ailments, since I’m just relying on my good ol’ genes right now.

  • No, unless I was sure it was going to be something happy and positive.  Seeing any of my future to this point would have scared me silly a  long time ago.

  • Absolutely! I hope you get to pick where that 1 second comes  from though. It’d be lame to just see a 1 second glimpse and it ends up being me eating a sandwich or something. I’d like a view of my wedding, or more impotantly, who I’m gonna marry.

I don’t think anything could go wrong in you seeing 1 second of your future. The better question would be  ‘What would you want that 1 second to be of?’

  • No.  Spontaneous happenings are for the win.  If you knew it was coming, you wouldn’t appreciate it.  And all that self-fulfilling prophecy stuff.

  • No

  • Yes and will feel sorry afterwards.

  • Humm…a part of me wants to say yes but, I’m afraid to see something I don’t like and be discourage.

  • Absolutely!

  • No. I would rather go back to my past once and let my past self know a few things.

  • One second only? Oh hell no. The suspense would kill me – waiting my whole life for that second. And would it be my future, or the future of the world in general, so I’m seeing something that I might never actually have had to see, but only for a second, so I won’t see it properly and I’ll be trying to figure out what is going on and if it needs to be stopped and ….

No no no. We cannot see into the future and there must be a reason why.

  • that’d be pretty exciting, thrilling, dreadful, amazing, crazy

  • yyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeessssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I don’t think so – 1 second of your life could be taken out of context horribly!

  • That sounds utterly useless.

  • I don’t think there would be any point, because of your choices, your future can change in any second. It would be interesting though

  • No.
