The Emo Cult
There is a sinister cult called emo that is threatening young people at this very moment.
I mentioned this story in my photoblog. A couple had a 13-year-old daughter that they said was happy. The mother checked in on her “daughter and found her hanging by a tie from the top rail of her bunk bed.”
Her parents couldn’t figure out why their “popular, intelligent and attractive girl” would commit suicide. They came to believe that the “emo” craze caused their daughter’s death. Here is the link: Link
The title of the article is “Why no child is safe from the sinister cult of emo.”
Do you think emo is a cult?
Comments (158)
god no
first? what?!?! lol. sorry. i had to. it was my first time
“My Chemical Romance made it to No.1 in the UK chart with Welcome To The
Black Parade in October 2006 – the ‘black parade’ is a place where all
emos believe they will go when they die.“
Best. Sentence. Ever.
Not a cult but a fad.
no. they’re just a bunch of annoying drama queen people.
it’s old news
and it’s not a cult. it’s just a sad fad that glamorizes depression, but most “emo” kids aren’t actually depressed. just angsty.
I would also say that it is a fad.
@mrcolorful - Agreed. I say we all start a whole new fad. Beating the snot out of the “emo kids” so they could actually cheer up. Yes, a tad bit weird I know.
No.. but then again I don’t know what the definition of a cult is. There’s no leader. Music has a lot of influence though.
@TpC_ReiO - I like that idea.
It’s a fad, just like the Japanophiles.
No, not at all.
@mrcolorful - i want to agree, but part of me doesn’t. i’m lean towards that you might be right on this.
HAHAHA!!!! emo a cult? no way. there’s no religion. it’s just a lifestyle, like prep or nerd. personally, i love the clothes and hair. just not the depressed “life is so horrible” attitude. i would totally change my style to emo, but then people would be like “poser” and “you’re not really emo.” and maybe they’re right. maybe you can’t wear emo clothes without having the life-sucks attitudet.
I think many teenagers are total idiots. I know I was an idiot when I was a teenager.
And emo music sucks monkey balls.
Adults have lived through all the stupid teenage fads. In 10 years we’ll have former emo-loving adults. All will be well. Until they have kids, at least.
It’s not a cult. I’m very sorry for this girl’s family, but they can’t blame it on the fact that she was ‘emo’.
I also hate the fact that they ‘couldn’t figure out why their “popular, intelligent and attractive girl” would commit suicide’. It’s always the parents that don’t pay attention to their kids that call them popular, intelligent, and attractive. My parents do the same thing and know nothing of my life. Just because I got A’s in 2nd grade, doesn’t mean I’m a genius now, or that I’m popular, or that people at school find me attractive. Not to say it’s ok that she committed suicide, or to justify her death, but maybe she was just angry her parents didn’t pay attention to her
i happen to love emo music and style thank you very much… but i’m also an idiot teenager, so what do i know?
and there’s a difference. there’s emo and then there’s scene. scene… is basically emo without the depression and with perhaps a more intense love of music.
o__O Again. Emo is no different from any other stupid high school stereotype. @__@
The same way that all preppy kids become anorexic, all goth kids worship Satan, and all hippie kids are high, all emo kids cut themselves.
And as a fan of My Chemical Romance, I find it oddly hilarious that ANYONE managed to draw the conclusion that ALL emo kids believe they are going to the black parade when they die.
The black parade is a made-up concept for the band’s album. O___o The idea that when you die, you go wherever you always wanted to go- and in the story and the song, the man is remembering how, as a boy, his father took him to see a parade. So when he dies, he sees Heaven as a parade coming to pick him up, and he “joins the black parade” and marches on to the afterlife.
Hannah was probably a fan of the video or something, and her friend who signed her book was probably just referencing that idea, like saying something along the lines of “I hope you find what you’re looking for in Heaven”.
It’s hardly a cult or even a religion. O___o; It’s a story. And, actually, I know a lot of emo kids who don’t even like that band.
…but I could go on forever on this subject. @_@
I’m an emo kid, non-conforming as can be; you’d be non-conforming too if you were just like me!
bah
cults require a leader, a unified front, a lot of delusion, etc. I could turn this into a real technical discussion, but Dan, your site is not te place for such a discussion. Emo is a shade of gray along the scale of coolness- to-gothic.
That girl committed suicide because she was depressed and her parents didnt give a damn about her emotional state – “its just a phase.”
i don’t think it’s emo’s fault. i think if a parent was very involved in a child’s life they would see signs because people don’t up and hang themselves.
“Emo” is far from a cult. I’m just wondering, out of all of the people who think emos are people who are depressed and say life sucks, who has actually met one like that? =|
It’s a cult just like “prep” is a cult.
No, just really bad music.
only without the kool-aid
More of a trend than anything. I do think some people take it too far. Some people are able to kep the whole thing in perspective though. Whatever, as a relatively boring person, I’m not exactly qualified to talk about the emo culture.
its not emo, its the parents being out of touch with their daughter to not realize that she’s been unhappy. people don’t commit suicide just because one day they have a bad day and find it convenient. there were definitely some underlying issues, which she tried to resolve by changing herself for better or for worse.
its sad though that the parents had to get a reality check this way.
They think their daughter commited suicide? It sounds like autoerotic asphyxiation to me, or it’s milder verion, “the hanging game.” She was most likely trying to get the “choke high” – not end her life.
is their a head emo that all emo kids follow and perform rituals after, not to my knowledge
so nope, not a cult, just misguided teenagers who think the world is truly after their tight jeans
I have to beg to differ with EgoTransplant. I do think that the “emo” group is different from other highschool groups. Unlike just plain rude and self absorbed preps, or the shallow jocks or outcasted nerds, the “emo” sterotype has become something considerably serious. I think this news story shows it.
Now, not everyone who jokes about being emo is a serious thing-but there is a certain group out there that really does scare me. Teenagers who think that things related to death and self abuse are ok.. Teenagers that are attracted to the dark and melancholy..and teenagers who find some acceptance in being miserable when they have no reason to be.
And even though I am very sad for this girl’s parents, I have to say that if I was her parent, and I noticed her becoming obsessed with that lifestyle-we’d be having some serious talks, and/or she’d be talking to therapist.
There is a level of the “emo” thing that is quite disturbing, and many parts of it do seem cult-ish.
emo is highly annoying… not a cult, just an excuse to be melodramatic
I think they have it backwards - people are not obsessed with death/injury because they are “emo” – they are drawn to that sort of thing because they are already depressed.
I think emo is a pathetic trend.
And everyone should listen to Fugazi and the Promise Ring…
No, it’s just a bunch of whiney little brats.
I put up a good act when I was suicidal for a legit reason. No one ever questioned me because I made all A’s.
I don’t think it’s so much of a cult as a new kind of clique. It’s just another group for people to be characterized in.
I didn’t know emo was still around.
I thought scene completely took over.Because, ya know, there’s such a big difference.
No.
Omg, emo kids are sooooooo annoying.I just wish they would get help…or their parents need them to get help.
its just a fad..that teens do. i did it..it was fun.
I’m alway wary of people blaming scapegoats. This seems to be the case here. I generally think you have to be genuinely suicidal/depressed before you commit suicide. I have a hard time believing that this subculture could brainwash people into thinking they are depressed and must kill themselves. No, I think there were other problems in her life. Maybe she had terrible friends within the emo crowd or maybe had a bad relationship because of joining this culture, but mere association with those unique situations alone doesn’t qualify it as a bad thing – indeed, tell me, what IS wrong about kids who are depressed getting together and be out for each other? Many people turn emo because they don’t have friends in the first place, and they want attention, and want to finally fit into something.
I know as a 13 year old, I had friends (wasn’t popular but still), got excellent grades, was a great kid overall on the outside, but I was suicidal, and it lasted me until sometime in the 8th grade. Your hormones are all zipping through you of course and anything can set you ablaze. This is a difficult time for her parents but it’s still not a time to cast sweeping general accusations.
-David
“Teenagers scare the living sh*t out of me
They could care less as long as someone will bleed
So darken your clothes, or strike a violent pose
Maybe they’ll leave you alone, but not me”
Haha. MCR.
i guess it started out as a really popular fad and may slowly be turning into a cult. that’s so scary, i hope it doesn’t stay.
No, it’s not a cult, and no, it’s not responsible for the girl’s death. Music doesn’t kill people. Depressing lyrics don’t kill people. At least not by themselves. People kill themselves because they have issues, not because they listen to a certain type of music.
And last I checked, emo kids usually made a huge show of being depressed when most of them aren’t. It’s not about depressed kids pretending to be sunny and happy.
No. It is not a cult.
No, it’s another delusion – a worm found in a rotten piece of fruit lying on the grass of Eden.
I knew kids were impressionable, but who knew suicide would eventually “catch on”?
I’m sure her friends are really impressed though.
And it’s not a cult, cults actually do things like nail dead cats to peoples doors, these kids just mope and shop.
Like other people have already stated, it’s just a fad for angsty teens.
take it from someone who has been called emo but doesnt consider himself to be emo. it is nowhere near a cult. emos are not an organized group, no one even knows what emo really is anymore, what it means to one person may be completely different from another persons opinion. emo started a long time ago but hasnt caught on until now. it doesnt really glorify depression at its core, but emotion in general, emo is about being expressive. although recently it has taken a leaning towards the depression emotion more than any other. most “emo” kids are just in it for the fad. they want to fit in and being emo is a pretty easy way to fit in, dress abnormal cut your hair a certain way, and you’re in. well for the fad at least. real emo is more of a music culture than a fad that 13 yr olds join. emo is a culture that glorifys self expression especially through music, the idea itself is actually a very healthy one but recently has taken a turn for the worst and its more of a fad that glorifys depression and is for some reason really attractive to really young people, 10-15. emo is definately not a cult, not even in the slightest, its just a music culture that has been horribly mangled from what it was originally. and beating emos up isnt going to help them its just going to give them another excuse to be depressed and angry. most “emo” people that you see arent depressed at all. personally i think parents always try to find something to blame other than themselves, and they’ll usually go with anything they think will work. notice no one is asking questions about how happy the girl really was, they just want to know if emo was a cult. in my opinion this girl probably didnt get nearly enough attention from her parents and found love and friendship with the “emos” and found that even that was dark and empty and only temporary compared to the love of jesus christ, i think thats what she really needed, not to be saved from the “sinister cult of emo”
First I’ve heard of it. It may be a fad, but a very dangerous one though. Why do kids reach out to things that are just insane. I just don’t get it!
Not a cult. Just a really stupid fad. A fad that tells you to be unhappy because a lot of kids are unhappy.
Here it goes again.. Parents blaming the emo music.. -_-
It’s really sad what happened though.. Maybe it is a cult “emo kids” like all the other stereotypes could be classified as cults.
i read the article and i truly believe its a cult, weather the person relizes it or not. Bieng emonis also big in america to, and to be emo u do have to cut yourself, it makes me sick. my brothers friend is emo and a few weeks ago in a period of a couple days he tried to commit suicide at least three times. i dont know what is to make kids these days think hurting themselves is the right way to go.. and i think that now the kids know theres so many people like them doing these things it just motivates them more to hurting themselves. @DarkStar_Wolf - changing what i said bieng emo doesnt mean you have to cut yourself but for kids here thats all it is about i have a few cousins who r emo and right now cutting yourself means you r “in”
You know, I have a cult. It’s a xanga cult, and we’re always welcoming new members if anyone is interested!
you do not have to cut yourself to be emo, i know about 5 or 6 “emos”, very well, and not oen of them has ever cut themself or tried to commit suicide. peoples twisted opinions of emo both of those inside the culture and out make me sick, they twisted something good to be horrible. i hate what its become, thats why i dont associate myself with it anymore, i still love a lot of music that some people so foolishly call emo, but i dont dress like i used to because i think its wrong to support something thats gotten so far from its roots and it twisted to a harmful trend.
“Hannah had wanted to sleep over and was upset at having to leave. When they got home, Mrs Bond
told Hannah to go to bed, adding that they would discuss the matter in the morning. The teenager turned to her and said: “I feel like killing myself.” Breaking down in tears, Mrs Bond told the inquest: “I think I said: Don’t be so silly — we’ll talk about it in the morning.’” An hour later, Mrs Bond went into her daughter’s bedroom … and found Hannah’s lifeless body hanging from the metal railing of the top bunk.”
I believe that depressed people are attracted to the “emo” culture. sure, emo lyrics can be depressing as hell, but usually you tend to gravitate towards what reflects your moods, like listening to break up songs after you break up with someone. anyway, the point of that passage is to point out and agree with an earlier commenter that Hannah’s parents weren’t really paying attention to her. I understand that “they didn’t think she was serious” but if your child started wearing black, became introverted and cutting herself, wouldn’t you have some concern if your kid expressed a wish to kill themselves? she didn’t sound like a person to express flippancy.
Wow, that article was a joke. I read half way through it and couldn’t bring myself to finish it. Blink 182 and Good Charlotte emo bands????? Hahahahahahahahaha. Both are typical pop-punk bands that have little to do with being depressed and both contain pre The only thing those bands have in common with Emo culture is those are bands that 13 year old girls like in addition to bands like Dashboard Confessional. And cutting your wrists as an “emo initiation”???? If cuts on their daughters wrists didn’t tip their parents off to the fact that her daughter was somewhat suicidal and already thinking about the idea of offing herself….what would? Wow, how bad of a parent or just plain dumb can you be? Emo is as much as a cult as the punk rock movement or the hair metal fad of the past were. I would love to see an article about how parents of a “punk” kid trying to blame the cult of punk as the reason their son went crazy and blew up a government building, in an effort to promote anarchism. How ridiculous…..
It seems more like a poor lifestyle to me.
As a kid, I liked elmo. But I dunno about emo.
mmk… u deff where the last one the bus to know this time…
and no…
just a bunch of insecure kids.
not at all. this is stupid. okay, so I like the music and all that…and you know what? I even have been through situations where I have wanted to kill myself, but this is retarded. they -aren’t- promoting suicide, they’re promoting teenage angst. thats been a part of culture…since when?!
its the process of kids trying to get on their own and figure out who they are.
that girl did not commit suicide because she was “emo”..she did it because there were deeper, underlying causes.
No
Emo is not a cult, but a choice. A chain, I guess, or an image.
I do feel sorry for the girl and her parents, though.
Ugh. The fuckin’ music and lame anime hair.
Seriously, cutting has been around far longer than “Emo”. If you read up on it, Johnny Depp himself has been a practitioner of the art of self-mutilation. The art itself spawns from morbid thoughts.
Even so, so does suicide.
No a cult needs a leader. But it is scary.
Okay since my alst comment never ent through, lets try this again.
NO WAY. Stop trying to blame thing son fads or sub-cultures. Emo is in no way a cult. Not all emos cut, or commit suicide, and the notion of them beleiving in joining “The Black Parade” upon death (collectively, not individually) is pathetically stupid.
People always have to blame the wrong things. No, theres no way that the girl was jsut depressed because her life was in no way as pretty as her parents think, that she became emo because they accepted her being depressed and suddenly she didnt have to live up to her parents standards. No way that her parents never paid attention to her and didnt really know what she was like…
Damn I have to write an entry now.
~Misa
Did anyone else notice that the article listed Blink-182, a band created in ’92 (nearly a decade before this crappy trend), as emo?
Just thought I’d throw that one out there.
Because its so ridiculously wrong.
@Drakonskyr - And really bad hair do’s. Really bad.
There is emo for fashion and style, and then there is the side that depressed kids would relate to.
I would think this child was suffering from depression, and was also emo.
I’m to old to really know, but it seems to me that Emo is just a preppier version of goth.
If I had to go through Jr High and High School over again, I could go emo.
But I’d not hang myself.
Anything is a cult.
i don’t think emo is a cult
LOL what an idiot
as if anyone would commit suicide becuase of a fashion
Not a cult, just a fad. But just because she was ‘emo’ doesn’t mean
that’s the soul reason she decided to end her life. I feel sorry for
her parents, but I feel no remorse for the girl. Though I truly do hate
emo…both as a style and music genre. Sorry, it’s just too depressing.
Of
course I suppose I am one to talk. My friends had a ‘goth’ thing going
on in my high school…small towns tend to lean towards the goth/emo
style it seems (at least from my experience) and yea fell into it a bit
and I wore black (not all the time though) to look like I fit in a bit
with my friends (a lot of other friends outside that group questioned
my reasons for hanging out with “those people” since clearly our style
choices were not the same), but thank God for college and learning how
silly I was being. My point is just because you dress a certain way or
listen to certain music doesn’t mean you are automatically a stereotype
of the genre…in emo’s case a depressing, suicidal, outcast freak.
That’s the mistake the girl’s parents are making. My friends were
actually very happy, outgoing people…they just REALLY liked the goth
style and I think some of the guys thought it made them look like total
bad boys…or something haha teenagers.
I love all the comments ;] But in my opinion, it’s a culture.
I think emo is just a product of “new trend”. Youths, get alot of pressure to achieve well and learn quickly, both personally and academically. Since emo is popular and colourful supported by media; youths are easily led to accept it and enjoy it.
Teenagers get alot of pressure to change quickly because they no longer want to be just a child, but they cannot take the responsibility as an adult so the “emo trend” is just like a congo train they hop onto while having fun, encountering different types of people and hoping to find themselves later on. It is a form of independence from their parents and growth within themselves, youths constantly fear being left out or being out of fashion (same here =p) Being within a popular trend also gives youths confidence to speak aloud and let off their frustration (of whatever nature) with people of similar age all in acceptence to a common theme.
Then there are those that take it too far, cutting themselves or unable to handle their quick psychological change from being an innocent child to something like an adult but already seeing that adults have many faults. Music is just the surface of it like a preview of a movie. It gets people interested and opens NEW designs in clothes and a new genre in music. It helps keeps money going around the world and gives a new face/topic to society for discussion. Its a trend but it may look like a cult when large groups in a emo uniform surround town squares, but they are just socialising.
lol no. and obviously she wasn’t happy or she wouldn’t have committed suicide. the parents are clueless and the girl didn’t play any video games to blame. whatever they can do to take the focus away from them being bad parents.
Have you heard the 18 deaths all in Wales, UK?, it was about a kid killing themselves…and then apparently it got around to lot of other people killing themselves…coz it was cool…or something?….it happaned recently like 2 months ago i think…they are not emo..but i just found it useful for that post…
Emo is not a cult…
Okay, im gonna write a rant..hahha
This is old news about the Emo thing…its been going around for ages in the UK…worse than Chav..since 2004 i think..
I get pissed off with the word Emo.
Everyone is “emo” because everyone is emotional right?
=D…
A lot of people have gone too far, and call everyone Emo, just for practically everything-for listening to rock, even when someone is a tiny bit unhappy for any reason (someone will go “awww..are you being emo, will you cut yourselves?”)
You know me and my friends even had “debate” with those people who think listening to rock is all that on the radio…the argument was truly…narrow minded by them..it was really annoying..that i gave up half way through..haha.
I been called Emo just for just listening to rock, death metal(i also listen to pop and hip hop..),Liking the goth style, for hanging around with friends who are into rock, for the times when i wasnt happy..doesnt everyone struggle with someothing? Its being called Human, not emo. i actually dont fit in with any sterotype….but i know a lot of people hate me without even knowing me. Im even an outcast to the emos xD. But their definition of rock is listening to My chemical romance, Fall out boy, Panic at the disco, AFI, Hawthorn Heights..(have you listened to crappy lyrics of Ohio is for lovers?!!)
Just because someone is wearing a piece of black clothing, or even have a side fringe…doesnt mean they are emo.
They just dont understand the stupidity of it.Some emos are mostly 14 year olds guys/gals(tho..sometimes i think they are 18..with the amount of makeup they wear..and their hair…but they actually younger than that..) just full of teenage angst, some listen to all the bands that i just covered.and there those who take pictures of themselves in every angle, put them on myspace and say..”i look so crap =|” and then get loads of comments from people “babes you’re stunning” its just really annoying.(thats what i see from the people i see) I get so annoyed when people go so far what they think emo is.
I dont tell anyone anything anymore, in fear of being called emo or attention seeking. See..thats whats annoying…what if someone is truly seeking for help because they are actually depressed yet get bashed for being called emo…then it goes too far..and then…they kill themselves…
I also hate it when they call some bands emo who no way are non related to the music =|.
(Off topic-I been called Chav for listening to Eminem and Tupac =|)
Cutting yourself does not mean you are emo..
AHH,..this is annoying..If you came over the UK, you will see the lot of them…worse than the chavs too!..
And now, they is a new thing coming out of emos…SCENE kids…=|
-Rant over-
ahaha…i wrote so much…
Its fun to make fun of the emos, of what everyone things tho..me and my friends follow what the stereotype think and just pretend “that emos are sad coz they dropped their pencils”
Where are the goths?…where have they gone?!
just read the article..
Really so stupid =
on the night of her death, Hannah had spent the evening at a friend’s house — also an emo and one who had also cut himself, telling his mother: “We’re emos, we all do it.”
WTF……
Yay for bad parenting!
no.
Just another thing to bring meaning to the word, “Lost”
I belive that people who say it is a cult, need to realise that “EMO” is not a cult.
“EMO” is a genre of music it is also shortened term for emotional.
You must realised people who commit suicide and cut themselves, are doing it because of depression or for attention.
Also this whole “no-one is safe from this cult” thing is a rediculous. Don’t blame a new fad, for killing children.. Blame parents who don’t talk to their kids, who don’t give kids the attention that they need.
As living_embers quoted: “cults require a leader, a unified front, a lot of delusion, etc. I could turn this into a real technical discussion, but Dan, your site is not te place for such a discussion. Emo is a shade of gray along the scale of coolness- to-gothic.” – i don’t see a leader… do you?
I remember when the emo trend was starting when I had first started college in 1996. It seemed a response to the rave drug-fueled culture that I’d known in high school. The emo kids were straight edge and got good grades.
Cutting is not new to teenagers of any subgroup. Cutting has been glorified in movies (Secretary, for one, The Pillow Book, for another.. hardly movies aimed at teenagers) for decades. Teenage suicide has existed long before this, with parents making the same excuses for their lax childrearing. Who is old enough to remember the movie, Heathers? Was that emo?
NO
NO
What exactly is emo anyways? A fashion tred? Or an adjective for a depressed teenager? If its a depressed teenager then no nobody is ‘safe’ from emo.. because everyone gets somewhat depressed sometimes.
Still not a cult though.
@Drakonskyr - &lol (-: Agreed
Emo is not a cult. It is a subculture. When I was in high school, we had kids that dressed in the goth style. It too was a subculture. I believe that every generation has some sort of subculture in the schools. It comes with their own set of music and their own set of clothing. It’s just something that teens do. In this case, after reading the article, it seems that the parents are trying to blame the emo subculture instead of their own uninvolvement. My God, the girl said she felt like killing herself and her parents brushed it aside. A statement like that should never be brushed aside. Even if the girl didn’t mean it, it is still something that needs to be discussed.
Not really a cult, just a bunch of mopey teenagers who sit in the corner and cry.
RYC: After the pain of surviving it all, the abs in my display picture is an old one (about 6 days old), but I feel new ones forming… I guess it’s a good thing. I can take a kick to the front better without too much oomph! and counter faster.
=T
Still.. the process kills.
As for the guy, he knows.
I’m pretty blunt and i lay it out, straight as a stick.
His ambiguous reply threw me off though.
What am I suppose to do with that?
A culture of music and style that draws in kids who already have depressive (or whiney) tendencies.
No. i dont think its emo’s fault why those things are happening to those teens who are very much involved with this. (regarding the fashion and the music genre). take into consider the environment an emo person belongs to.
no, but the whole emo thing’s kinda old now. now we’re on to the “scene” and HxC stuff.
No way. She probably was just depressed anyway. In that first picture, she doesn’t even look that happy.
Parents just miss important details in the lives of their children. I can guarantee that there were warning signs. Stupid parents.
Always blaming their mistakes on other people.
RYC: Well…I figured it was worth asking. ^_~
<33
“Emo” is not a cult. It’s a stereotype/label. It’s no different than “jock”, “nerd”, “geek”, “prep”, etc. Something I’m sure we’ve all seen or experienced in high school.
No, they’re just stupid. It’s no more cultish than comparable social groups of times past.
BTW, happy, intelligent, popular, attractive 13-year-old girls don’t hang themselves. I think it’s more likely that those parents suck at life, and are trying to make excuses for the shitty way they probably treated her.
Emo is not a cult, and those parents should not be blaming their daughter’s death on some non-threatening fad.
Man, that girl looks so much better in her “Before” picture. :O
I’m not sure. I think we’ve started throwing the word cult around a lot lately. But popular+intelligent+attractive doesn’t equal happy. They shouldn’t blame this for them being oblivious to what was going on in their daughter’s life.
Emo is not a cult, but a mere fad. :
Every time an EMO kid cries, a viking from the pagan lands appears and dismembers him
–George Bailey
hahahahahahaha.
That is the only answer that question deserves.
is this a trend or sumthing…poor girl..
call me ignant, but what the hedoublechopstix is “emo”?
the puppet?
- THE MUPPET SHOW will ALWYS be best – all this other
new stuff is infecting the recent gaggle of kids in skool 8.|-
AM I OLD @ 37? (truthfully i am, in spirit & scholastic; 22. Because that;s the year my true life began)
TO REALLY EXPERIENCE LIFE some ned to lose it first.
kids should have freedoms on their life style but parents also have great responsibility to look after and input comments when they feel that the kids are going out of the track. now a day, dad & mums are all busying on their works, life is hard, but not only your boss need you, your kids also.
Its a fag and its fucking retarted, I think these little emo fucks that want to cut their wrists should! Let the emos /wrist and just QQ
No. As living_embers said, a cult requires a leader and other characteristics.
Anyone remember when punk and goth were bigger fads? People freaked out about those too. Kids need individual attention, not to be judged by their style of clothing or the music they listen to.
i dont think that emo did anything. its parents just trying to figure out how they could miss something like this about their daughter. must be tragic to realize that you didnt know anything that was going on.
sometimes i think most teenagers are always at the cusp, or walking a thin line, between life and death. it really can just take one thing that will throw a person over….especially when emotions run wild. i’m surprised i made it through high school and the early years of college.
Course not, its just a trend.
I can’t see how the parents couldn’t figure out why she committed suicide. Shouldn’t they have done something or paid her attention when they found she’s cut herself or when she said that she felt like dying?”the “black parade” — a place where emos believe they go after they die.”.
where do they get this stuff?! (:
Holy Smokes!!! Are you kidding? This is not a fad or a cult. No one has addressed the lack of loving dicipline, or ethic or standard or expectation or boundary which parents are obligated and should instill in the very necleus of their home and childre. Crap happens all the time, even in the best of ordered homes, but this situation is one for the books, as was all the violence “children” have done to each other and against others, which made headlines in the news. If the last two decades don’t speak to the lack of God in their lives…well there isn’t a cow in Texas!
A CULT??? Hardly… just another silly fad that happens to be at the opposite end of the spectrum from the izod-clad preppie business nerds I remember from 25 years ago.
If you back off and look at it from the “50,000-foot view,” Emo happens to be the convenient “scapegoat du jour” for what’s “wrong” with people. All generations have one…. back in the 50′s, everything was blamed on “communism,” in the 60′s it was blamed on “the hippies,” and so forth.
Define cult? I don’t know. I honestly don’t think it is a cult. I have to say that I’m kinda emo.
emos need love too!
I think the very fact you posted this is the problem with today’s society.
Emo and depressed are nothing alike. Emo is not a cult. Depression is not a fad.
This is not something to post blogs about and ask readers their opinions. Suicide isn’t a joke. Depression isn’t a light topic.
People need to get over themselves.
Emo music isn’t even Emo music. It’s kind of devolved I would argue. Early in 2000 and before, there were some really amazing bands doing some good music that no one really knew how to label. Now it’s a commercialized alternative label of clothing and very little else.
Calling Emo a cult is the most misinforming journalism on culture I’ve heard in quite awhile.
take it back, dude! you better! actually, naw you don’t.
Emo is a subculture based around self-pity and all the “woe is me” you can handle, whether they have any woes to speak of or not. Maybe they wouldn’t be so “emo” if they’d listen to better music.
But seriously. Emo is also a word used to belittle actual emotions nowadays. If you call it “emo” it can’t be serious. That’s why when I’m upset and people tell me to “stop being emo” I get really pissed, because if you replaced that with “stop being sad” or something like that, it sounds a lot more asshole-ish, doesn’t it?
The emo subculture is just unhealthy. But I don’t think most people who identify themselves with emo are actually depressed and would actually kill themselves. Subcultures are made for acceptance and sometimes to get attention, which suicide threats tend to be. Sometimes just attention, sometimes actually for help. And I think the emo “woe is me” stereotype undermines the people who really are crying out for help. And on the same token not all of those who are depressed or really need help deign to call themselves “emo.” People from all walks of life become depressed, all ages and both genders. There’s no way everyone who feels any depression whatsoever is going to label themselves “emo,” or by now it might actually have evolved into a cult.
But maybe that’s just my take on it, being a “formerly depressed but never identified myself as emo” high school completer.
My son introduce me to the word Emo= He says it’s really emotional deepressed people. Who want to get noticed. He admits sometimes the songs are neat. But he doesn’t have the desire to be one at all. Death is what attracts them ( thats why most wear black and black eye make up…listen to sucide music). I think it is a fad also.
Honestly when I heard the word emo.. I thought of Elmo
No. It’s a stereotypical trend, that has some form of music to go along with it. Not a cult at all.
emo kids aint really sad, theyre just desperate and need attention.
No, probably she was already in state of depression before becoming emo and her parents just didn’t know about it.
Thtat’s so stupid. She didn’t kill herself because of Emo’s she obviously was severely depressed, her parents were just to blind to notice. Why is that whenever someone commits suicide people are shocked and say “oh but he was so happy and intelligent.” My Chemical romance is NOT an EMO band!!!!!
If anything the lyrics to the “black parade” suggest anti-suicide themes. These are just being prejudiced and blaming someone else for their daughters death.
**** Goth’s and Emo’s are not the same!!! Most Goths hate Emos.
lol!
No, it might be a fad but it’s not a cult at all
no, cults are very different from “emo” cults are more dangerous. “emo” is just a fad. nothing else…
can’t stand the music tho >.<
No, It’s a fad. I don’t think it fits the definition of a cult. But I don’t think deciding to be emo to fit in with the cool kids would result in suicide. Sounds like those parents may have been out of touch with a depressed teen.
I think it’s a choice, not a cult.
Less of a cult than a genre or a style. I don’t think “emo” is a threat, I think stupidity is.
I dont think it’s a cult, but it is rather pathetic and whiney and self sabotaging.
i think emo is just a statement by the youth rather than making it into a cult -_-
FUCK the daily mail dan. seriously.
of course not. emo is a music genre, not a cult, and it does not “romanticize” death. the article doesn’t even know what it’s talking about. the black parade is a cd by my chemical romance. it is not “a place emos believe they go when they die.”
the fact that the one girl says that her friends were taking anti-depressants should be a sign that they were working on their problems, not that they’re dangerously depressed and suicidal. she even said that someone would have to be overly vulnerable already to actually take any action.
suicidal depression is not something that happens overnight. her parents obviously weren’t paying attention. the fact that her mother actually told her to not be so “ridiculous” and that they’d talk to her in the morning is appaling. rather than accept their responsibility in the situation, her parents are blaming it on something completely ridiculous. they should have payed attention.
if society don’t want kids to join fads, cult, or whatever it is called like emos, then they should find a more constructive way for kids to express their emotions.
that’s the craziest thing i’ve ever heard.
leave the people alone.
..i’ve been told i “wear too much black”.
we need to let kids be who they are
& stop blaming stereotypical ideas for occurences like this.
of course it’s not!
LOL
LOL
LOL. sorry. but that “the ‘black parade’ is a place where all
emos believe they will go when they die.“”
no. its a damn lyric
emos dead. hasn’t anyone noticed ? it was a phase.
All that being said, I just noticed…
Didn’t she know that the correct emo bang falls over the RIGHT eye?
*is pelted with rocks*
We can’t call everything we don’t like a cult.
Geez, I’m getting to this post late.
“Why on earth did their daughter — a popular, intelligent and attractive girl — do such a thing? “
So if you don’t fit into these groups, then you have a reason.
emo is a fleeting trend, and a very lame one at that. I’d like to see these kids look back on their lives and realize that life wasn’t about trying so damn hard to be different. It’s pretty ironic actually because a lot of emos look similar to each other which completely destroys their claim to individuality and so called “being different”.
Man don’t compare the hippies with Emos ever. The Hippies were part of a movement but the HUGE difference between hippies and this newer generation of Emos is that the hippies actually did something beneficial for society, they protested when they sought justice, they were free thinkers and revolutionists.
What have emos done for us really? Besides bring horrible music (in my opinion) into the world.
NO
It’s possible that people take the emo fad too seriously. They see it as a different form of a lifestyle, and they choose to live it. Or in her case, she decided to end her life.
Such a tragic thing. But when a person is that young still, they are still trying to find their identity. This emo fad seemed appealing to her, and she completely transformed her life to match the emo lifestyle. I think it unhealthy when you try to mold yourself into something, and it seems like this is what Hannah was doing. And she wasn’t mature enough to take into consideration the realities of life and death. She took the fad a bit too far, perhaps.
Hahaha, and I like that Blink 182 is considered “emo” all of a sudden.
Not so much a cult… more like a plague.
XD
Emos have always been around, we just didn’t have a name for it.Almost everyone alive usually have gone through the time of Emo( usually between 13-25 years old)
I think it’s a craze that will pass…
uhhhhhhhhh……………what’s a cult, exactly?????????????
לא רק בקובע ומשקפי שמש מגנים על עצמנו מפני נזקי אור השמש, אנו צריכים גם סוככים ,כדאי לחשוב על זה.
Um, no.
Okay, people, “cutting” and commiting suicide is NOT what emo is about. For lots of emos, it’s an escape from the superficiality of life. Not everybody wants to talk about the great new shirt they bought or who’s going out with who. We want to talk about deep stuff, like the meaning of life, and why exactly gay people are frowned upon.
Emo is not a cult, kay?
cult? haha. i wouldn’t be surprised.
it becomes a cult when people take it too far…
just stupid.
this is sad =[
Oh my gosh. This article is ridiculus. If you classify yourself as “emo”, then your just trying to make yourself into something you might not be. The fact that this girl wears all black and is emo doesn’t mean that’s why she killed herself. Her mother should have tried to relate to her daughter than force her to change. Hannah would have killed herself anyways. Besides, emo is a type of music, not a cult.
i wish my lawn were emo.
then it would cut itself.
aside from the fact that a girl killed herself, that has to be the most unintentially hilarious article I’ve read in the while. the ending made
me laugh uncontrollably-
“Naive, misguided or just plain
stupid.
But then, that’s always been
the trouble with some teenagers. And the danger of emo.“
.. and then it made me immensely irritated. can’t you just feel the doom? jeez, it’s not the KKK. it’s a goddamn over-hyped high-school
stereotype, like preps and skaters. hardly any of these
self-proclaimed “emos” have suicidal tendencies, at least not at my
school.
the journalist who wrote this should really spend more time trying to
find newsworthy stories, and less time trying to make a horror story
out of some misguided teens killing themselves, just so parents can read
it and scare themselves shitless when they next see their children
wearing [god forbid] a fucking black shirt while surfing the goddamned internet.
in fact, the talentless writer who typed this crap should have her fingers pried off, be clothed in black, and left to bake in the
hot sun while hardcore screamo music is pounded through her ears at
full volume.
okay, rant over.
Emo isnt a cult…Emos are just just like everyone else but have different styles just like everyone…We are all emos because we can be emotional…
…Emo ppl are kewl…Music is gr8……R.I.P Hannah Bond we love you hun and you will be dearly misss mwah
It could be considered that when taken to extremes.
Haha emo kids…
No, I don’t consider emo kids to be a cult. It’s just bad music and bad style.Looking for attention and trying to be what they consider “cool.”
Now I agree that sometimes the parents aren’t as involved in their child’s life as they could be.
But you can’t always blame the parents, like many of your commenters are doing. There are parents that are very involved in their child’s lives but these things end up happening anyway. No matter how close you are to someone, they still have the ability to hide things from you. It happens more often than some people want to believe.
Well, if Emo is considered a cult, then goth and punk must also be considered as such. It just happens that emo has the worst music out of the bunch. It is a bit extreme…At least no one had to tell the goth or punk kids to cheer up.
Also, the guy that wears the long black jacket from the article is probably not emo, but goth but eh, most people don’t know the difference.
I don’t see the fun of being a emo… what is wrong with being normal? Wasn’t that what every one wanted to be?
no, just having drama in life, because maybe they’re sick of being happy-go-lucky one or maybe attention puhlease, they want to cry most of their time
