  • People Whining about Xanga

    You people need to quit complaining and whining about xanga all the time.  It gets old.

    You know what would happen if xanga listened to your advice?

    Here are the type of complainers out there:

    # 1  Xanga should not change.

    Xanga adds features.  People complain that xanga adds features.  They say things like “If I wanted myspace or  Facebook, I would go there.  We don’t need that feature here on xanga.” So I guess the thinking for these people is that xanga should never change anything.

    # 2  Xanga should have done this or that and they would have kept up with facebook and myspace.

    These are the Monday morning quarterbacks who obviously know how to run a social network.  They have great advice on what xanga should have done two years ago.  These people are always brilliant.  By the way, you should all bet on the Bears for SuperBowl XX.  I think their chances are pretty good.

    # 3 Featured Questions and Featured Posts.

    These people want their questions and posts to be featured and always bag on xanga for each and every posts they feature and the questions that are on featured questions.  This is because their current post is so much better than the one xanga just featured.  I especially love the groups that think there is a xanga conspiracy against them or their people group.  For example, “Have you noticed that xanga never features left handed hispanics that are  missing one testicle?”  Or “Did you notice that Xanga has never featured a person who is both Indian and a Ron Paul supporter?  What are they trying to hide?”

    # 4  True Badge

    Does this one even need an explanation?

    # 5  Ads

    These are the people that block the xanga ads and will not pay for premium because it clearly doesn’t cost money to run xanga.  I am sure the xanga employees will just work for free and the office space is donated and financed by some generous soul.

    I didn’t know someone could block the ads without paying. Sounds like hacking, to me, and therefore illegal.

    There’s a certain amount of peer pressure on Xanga. If someone approves of everything Xanga does, they’re a suck-up. But if someone complains too much, others will accuse them of being a big mouth.

    If you approve of this but not of that, you’re still bound to upset someone.

    I guess the best thing for one to do is not say anything positive or negative. (When I say “one”, I mean me.)

  • The Xangateam works hard to make Xanga the best blogging community available, and it is for free.
    I believe that positive and even negative feedback is appreciated but the whining is irritating!

Now everyone is aware of the Xanga corporate conspiracy against the league left handed Hispanic Indian Ron Paul supporters who are missing one testicle. High up in the sky the Xanga masters sit in their grim skyscraper like dark lords of the universe, deliberately oppressing some of society’s least recognized special interest groups. It’s rumored that they also plan to begin censoring the Tibetan vegetarian used car salesman’s antarctic surfing club as well. When oh when will the tyranny end?

  • is this rant aimed at Paige. I stood up for you on that post Dan! Whatever they add is fine with me and whatever they take away is fine with me. Sure I do a post every now and then I wish could be featured, but then I think maybe I don’t want to be featured cuz I would think I needed to comment back to everyone that commented.  I think the stuff that Xanga doesn’t charge for is great, people like me that just do it at their leisure for fun and to meet people from all over the world that normally would never be able to meet is something you really can’t put a price on. I trully enjoy it, Thanks Xanga

  • You’re right, but, changes should be optional and ads should be unobtrusive.  Google ads, for instance, are awesome.  Moving blinking lights?  Not so much.

  • @Perfect_HindSight - Classic xanga is still here (for now) you just have to choose to use.

    And as long as xanga can remain simple in format like how it was when I joined four years ago, then I’ll be okay. If it was mandatory to use the new layout… I’d be very confused and lost. Especially since I use Safari and nothing ever works on Safari, including the Look & Feel section for the new layout stuff.
    Change is going to happen, as long as blogging is the main part of xanga, I’ll be okay.

  • I must admit, I understand the complaints about the Featured Questions, but it’s hard to come up with very original or deeply provocative questions every couple of days. 

    As far as Features go, sometimes it’s inconvenient when they change things, but it’s nothing to rant about.  And as far as the rest goes, I’m right there with you.

    EDIT: BTW, I forgot to put in a vote for fullmetalbunny for Xangan Idol round 2 and would like to do so, if it’s not too early.  Thank you.  :)   Oh, and I mus admit, I would like one of those little True badges, but I don’t talk about it much because it’s shallow and annoying.  lol.

    Whenever anyone complains about anything there’s always someone else to come along and call them a whiner.  But people should express their disagreements. That’s how change happens.

    So if it’s what you truly believe, do blog about it, even if a hundred people have blogged it before.  Why should you hold back their opinions just because other people are sick of hearing about it? Maybe that’s the only way to get action to occur, to shout so loudly that they decide to change things just to shut you up.

    The only complains I don’t like are the ones from people who don’t really *mean* it. That is, when you are putting on a show to get attention on your blog by picking the ever popular controversial topic of what’s best for xanga.  But everybody else, no matter which category they fall under, I think they should just keep on complaining to their heart’s content. I’ll keep reading.

  • I bitch about Xanga and won’t apologize for it.  I prefer Xanga to myspace, facebook, livejournal, blogspot, nexopia, or whatever else.  At the same time, if I haven’t signed up for premium yet, chances are I won’t, so quit asking.  I don’t want my new private homepage because the old one worked quite well, thank you very much.  I don’t give a rat’s hind end about being featured or “true”, but I’d like a little consistency and to not be bothered about the newer, bigger, better features.  The reason I joined Xanga in the first place was because it is fairly uncomplicated and well organized.  I just want it to stay that way.

  • my main complaint about xanga isn’t that they’re adding features, but that their new homepages look less and less like xanga. i don’t think they shouldn’t add features, i just think they shouldn’t give up who they are in order to be more like myspace and facebook and such.

    Here’s my thought on complaining about Xanga: if you’re not happy then leave. And although Xanga hasn’t made me unhappy, I wouldn’t complain if they did…they have the authority to shut down your site.

    I *heart* Xanga more than Myspace and Facebook. :)

  • The thing I used to whine about myself, was uninteresting posts that got featured.
    I tried my damnedest to get featured for a while, then I just quit.
    I realized that the majority of people that read that featured, will NEVER comment on you again.
    So what’s the use?
    All you can really depend on,
    is your friends/subscribers.

    As for the badges I do not posess any and not sure how to. But they are not important to me really… I am true to those who are true to me and that is what really matters in my book! I would love to have the LIFE badge though so I am saving up for that becuz well I love Xanga enough to be a life time member…

    I do participate in the featured questions when they pertain to something I may have an opinion on..  As for being a featured post I have wondered once a longgg time ago what someone needed to write about in order to be featured but then I realized almost as quickly that I didn’t care I write for me COMPLAINTS and all!

    Xanga is my favorite site I do have a myspace and a couple others that i never use or rarely use but I feel safer here in Xangaland…

I switch back and forth between the two styles but 95% of the time i prefer the old way.. I do not think you are a bitch btw… just honest… My reason for joining Xanaga was also the simplicity of it over the others I was using at the time..  Even now with the new features it is still better then the rest!

    Let xanga builders do their thing. I like the changes they have done. I don’t know why they are comparing it to myspace and facebook too. Myspace, facebook, and xanga are three totally different things. Or, maybe myspace and facebook is a bit similar, goal wise. But yeah….

  • It may seem like I complain about Xanga being like myspace or facebook (which I am actually a member of, but who isn’t), but what really bugs me is the people who want it to be exactly the same as those sites. Granted it has to have some of the same features, it is a social networking site after all. But people come here to write, express opinions, etc. There are people who seem to want it to be only about making the most friends or being the most popular. And that’s what really bugs me.

  • I agree with you on everything but featured questions. Frankly, the featured questions suck. Most of them can be answered with one word or a sentence at most. That’s hardly a writing prompt. I don’t care if I’m featured… though I was the other day which really Really shocked the heck out of me, but regardless, I don’t care about being featured, but if they’re going to offer writing prompts, I wish they would do a better job of it or give it over to someone who’s willing to go through pick some good ones out instead whatever’s on the top of the pile.

    Dan, I don’t want to bash you too quickly on this, because I don’t read the same subscribers you do. (I’ve only commented on Xanga once, and that was a month or two
    ago, so I don’t know how much more Xanga commenting has gone on since.
    My subscribers tend not to talk about such issues for the most part, so
    perhaps that’s why I’m so taken aback at your post.) And I agree that some complaining has gotten out of control. But starting the post with “You people” and then doing a blanket bash on 5 different categories is rather sloppy. You’re mixing the innocent with the guilty here.

  • I like how xanga is improving.  I really got into it once again when the featured questions came about.  Recently I’m discovering xanga has a whole wide community.  I hope to be part of that, too.  I’m debating whether or not I should get premium though since I’ve been a member for quite some time.  It might be worth it if you have a large audience is it?

    Besides, given my myriad DNS names, server availability, programming and overall web design, development, deployment and administration experience, I’ll still not switch out (even though I tried once) because no matter how much, or how little effort the XangaTeam put into this place, it’s the people that make it and the ones I love most will never be found dead on those others places mentioned (well, actually, you’d probably have to kill them to find them there)

  • I don’t think there’s anything wrong with stating issues you have with a community that you’re and active, loyal part of. I mean, who are they making these changes for if not the users? Sure, some people complain about stupid things, but if enough people have an issue with a particular trend or feature on the site I’m sure the Xanga team will take notice. Yes a lot of the complainers are annoying, but a lot of them just really love Xanga and either want to see it become even better than it already is, or else don’t want to see it go the way of the Dodo.

  • It has already been stated in quite a variety of ways, but I agree with people stating their opinions.  The manner in which they state their opinions, I find, is where things can go awry.  I remember reading some comments when the whole True vs. Not True debate came up and from that I learned what is true in real life, emotions can run high.  I believe that the reason why things can get out of hand here is, of course, that we are using this kind of medium, we are not face to face. I seriously doubt people would say face to face what they type and therein lies the problem.  One ought to take responsibility for what one types just as one would for what one says.

  • See, now I’ve had my little xanga rant (and there may have been aspects of the above complaints within it)…but I think that you’re missing a category, or maybe a sub-category of all of them:

    People who like xanga so much, they want to see it be as good as it can be. Clearly that means feedback. It’s inevitable that people will comment on changes that go on around them. Sometimes change = good. Sometimes it doesn’t.

    And most complaints are certainly gut anger reactions and petulant whining. But some of them are valid, well thought out ideas. I’ve read ideas from bloggers about improving xanga that I thought were pretty good.

    I’m sure the xanga team appreciates that feedback. Any business owner would (even if they have to sift through a bunch of b.s. complaints first).

    Oh, and I have no problem with the ads. When I’m ready to do without them I’ll pay for the privilege.
