  • Competitive

I was talking to a friend because we are working on a project together and I mentioned to her, “I am competitive.”  After I wrote her that message, I went and started to do something else and I thought to myself, “Who wouldn’t describe themselves as competitive?”

I think by nature most of us would describe ourselves as competitive.

Would you describe yourself as competitive?

  • I am very competitive, actually.

  • How can anyone not be competitive in this competitive world?

  • No.. I am not competative at all… unless your talking trivia games… But I would never describe myself as a competative person. I try to do the best that I can… as long as I see constant improvement in myself  I am a happy person.

  • to an extent. not as much as some people.

  • and it depends on the activity

  • Nope, not really. And I don’t like when people start getting competitive with me. It makes me squeamish.

  • Completely depends on the activity and how much I actually care.

  • (so most of the time, yeah)

  • I am competitive, in certain contexts. In others, I’m not so much. I think that, if all people are competitive, it depends on which aspect in their life that you’re referring to.

PS I don’t think that anyone is competitive in every aspect of their life.

  • not really

  • I am only competetive with videogames and puzzles, or with myself. I wouldn’t describe myself as competetive in general.

  • Of course… who wants to lose?

  • When playing games – especially cards – definitely. In more physical pursuits, not so much. Mainly because I suck at anything resembling a sport.

  • Well, first of all, I would have to care.  My friend and I compete in a pretty benign fashion in cook-offs with our other friends.  If it were about running, I could see me being competitive.  When it comes to posting the highest quarterly gross profit in my business, heck yeah.  Other things… I don’t think so.

  • i can be depending on the situations.  i win in those situations.

  • Well being really helpful isn’t getting me anywhere, so I’m gonna think about that…

  • I strive mightily to win at being non-competitive.

  • Nope.  The stress of competition is too much for me.

I suck at bowling, but I still have fun bowling with my friends.

I might be a little competitive about guitar hero…

  • I remember once my fiance and I were talking about how competitive she was. Then I said something to the effect of me not being competitive at all…. then as time passed I realized I can’t even play a game of frisbee without being competitive lol…

  • I have a terrible concern with being discourteous, so it overwhelms any personal desire to be competitive.

  • I’m competitive in academics, but not in sports.

  • Definitely, I never understood the concept of a “friendly” game, if you are playing then you should be playing to win.

  • Extremely. I must excel in everything I do.

  • I am at certain things, there are some things though that you should drop the competitiveness and just be considerate. Competition is usually good, but there are some situations that competing only does harm and brings about descension.Competition is a GOOD form of selfishness, but can turn ugly when GREED takes over! Hopefully that makes sense, it does to me!

  • Would you describe yourself as competitive?

I suppose so. When I’m better than everyone else, I shouldn’t ever find myself on the losing end. =P

  • Yes.  And very stubborn too.  Probably not a good combination.

  • @huginn - As long as it’s not picking the best Basketball team… Sorry, I just couldn’t resist that one Bud

  • i’m extremely competitive. if it’s a game i suck at, i try to compete with all the other people who suck at it to see who can be the most ridiculous.

  • @UnworthyofHisgrace - Ha. But I’m calmed (somewhat) by our long-term prospects. With enough returning starters to supplement a #1 recruiting class, the UCLA Bruins have a chance to contend for a final 4 berth next year. =)

But yeah. After two years of being smashed by Florida, it hurts to be smashed a third time. -_-

  • There are only a FEW handful of things that I am competitive with … and those things are things that really do not matter.

    Jenga, for instance.

  • It depends on what I have to be competitive about. But for the most part, yes.

  • @huginn - I have know clue what Memphis is gonna have next year. We’ll be plenty good, but last years team can’t be topped. Man, if these guys would only stay in college longer, the team we would’ve had NEXT year. I’m anxious to see what Rose does at Chicago. The Nets got a steal with CDR in the draft. He has such an unorthadox shot, I guess they just didn’t think he would be that good in the pros. You watch CDR is gonna be a top player in a few years in the NBA. He can penatrate the defense when on one else can. And if you don’t guard him, the shoots going down, and if you guard him, he can find the open man. He’s that good.Thats MY opinion on the guy.  Hope Memphis and UCLA meet again next year. I’m sure it will be a different game

  • As you can see you would be wrong to think of most people as basically completive. Maybe in one area, but not overall

Now I am completive in everything I have any interest in, and I rarely lose. But often it would be better if I did lose.

  • I am secretly kind of competitive; I don’t show it much though so many would consider me completely laid back and not competitive.

  • I am really not competitive at all. I used to be a little but never a lot. I don’t really want to win at anything. Who cares?

  • actually no, i wouldnt call myself competitive. lol.

  • I would describe myself as competitive. I really am. I always want to be on top and I’m a little bit of a perfectionist as well. Just kick me now! Isn’t being competitive just part of human nature? It might not be too big a deal now because we tend to tolerate and accept more, but really think about it. If you were to hire a bunch of people for a project, you would want them to be competitive. They would motivate each other to do more and to work harder.

  • I’m actully not competitive. I’m more of a “let’s make everyone happy” type of person.

  • I like to think I’m not competitive, but it’s obvious that I am, I actually find my self getting competitive over silly little things, like yahtzee.

  • I can be competitive.  I like to beat other cars off the line at stop lights.  I like to be better at m sport than other people.  I like to be near the top of the class (well, usually).  But I also consider myself to be fairly laid back.  If someone beats me at something, well, that’s life.

  • Definitely. (What a worthwhile comment!)

  • extremely… to the point that it ruins some relationships with friends and family members. I sadly cant joke about that.

It’s the middle child syndrome. I always have to push to be better than my oldest sibling, and stand out more than my younger.

  • i wouldn’t really describe myself as competitive. the closest to that would be attempting to be the valedictorian in high school, and even that is solely because i want to deserve it and afford a good college. i’ll make an effort to be better, but it’s not with the ambition to beat others out of the spot. i’d rather be with people equivalent or greater than myself in most aspects; it puts me in a good crowd.

  • I work on commission. They brainwash us to be competitive so that they’re sales go up like how Spartan children were raised to kill. No, I’m not competitive.

  • Depends on what I’m doing.  Usually, yes, just instinctively, but less so as I get older and mature.  Increasingly, I don’t care what other people do, as long as I do work that I can personally be proud of.

  • I can be. But most of the time it’s just for fun.

  • not very but yes.

  • I can’t think of any area of my life where I’m competitive…definitely more of a “live and let live” type of person.

  • Not sure….depends on with what.

  • Depends on how much the the task or desired object means to me, but mostly, yes.  Sadly, I know many people that are not competitive at all, which I guess means that nothing seems worth fighting for to them.

  • Unlike angi1972.. I hate board games.. I get bored with them. Not the competition but just the whole idea of it being competitive.
Im not competitive in trying to win ahead of others or being better than nor just as good.. I am competitive with myself. I want to succeed is all.
I like doing the for fun, but just for a little while.
Bowling is fun… I do it just to try to knock the pins down, not to beat the other players.
I hate the whole,”Yessssssss! I win” stupid shouting. hahaha
If I had to race with someone to get to the door, I would rather be the rotten egg. haha I dont run in the rain, I would rather get soaked.
And if a girl is trying to beat me to a guy… shit, it isnt worth it,go get him if you want him that bad…
Now in sex its the same way.. Im not going to try to compete to show you that I am good, take me at the  value that I am or not at all.Hahaha
Okay I was trying to explain all corners of the competitive circle…

    Did I win?!??!?!?!?!?!!?

  • Nope. I like winning but it doesn’t bother me if I don’t.

  • TALKING ABOUT BEING COMPETITIVE…..WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE “PREGNANT MAN”????????????? ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
    ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
    ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
    ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

  • Depends on the activity. I hate the kids at school who are so competitive when it comes to grades, though. That sounds kinda stupid, ’cause that’s something you should be competitive about. For, ya know, your future and whatnot.

I’m in all those nice advanced classes [International Baccalaureate], so I’m with all the uber smart kids all the time. There are a handful of kids who do nothing but compare grades, GPAs… ugh. One set of twins really irks me. One of them actually goes up to the teacher to ask how the other one is doing in comparison.

It’s so crazy. I don’t really care about the money I make later in life, so long as I enjoy what I’m doing. That may change, but I can still hold on to my naivete for a little while longer, eh??

  • Random question,Dan….
How many footprints do you average in a day?
    Seriously.

  • I am above competition

  • I’m too competitive at stuff that doesn’t matter as much as what I should be competitive about.  (i.e. board games and sports compared to school, grades, etc.)

  • I am competitive about a lot of things, but I typically put a lot of effort into hiding it to avoid coming off as a little crazy. Haha.

  • Only in certain areas or against certain people.

  • Nope, I’m not.  If someone wants to kill themselves emotionally and physically by trying to out-do me at whatever, I’m all for it.  I’ll be sitting back drinking martinis.  lol

  • My husband is not really competitive…

But I’m VERY VERY competitive. He always lets me win though, and then I feel like I haven’t really won…

  • I used to be competitive but that usually leads to confrontations and I don’t do well with those. I try to be the best I can be though, just not competitive.

  • Yep.

  • i am anything BUT competitive. i win, good for me. you win, good for you, too bad for me. no hard feelings. AT ALL.

  • More or less, we have to be competitive. When everyone else is and you are not, you’d get thrown out in a snap.

  • Yes.  Mostly competitive with myself.

  • depends on what the reward is.

  • very, very competitive…

  • I’m not very competitive. I know full well what I am good at, how good I am at it and whom I am better than.  If I come across someone better then me, I don’t want to out do them I want to learn from them.

  • I’m only competitive with ultimate frisbee.

  • I am very competitive. THough I just cover it up later if I lose with “oh, good job! I wasn’t trying…” XD

  • I am competitive in everything by nature, except sports.  I have this superiority complex. I feel as if I need to be on top of everything.  I feel as if I need to be the best at everything.  If I can’t  be the best or if I’m not the best, why do it?  I always push myself so I can have that number one position, or close to it.

  • I’m only competitive in things that I completely believe I can win.

And then, it’s probably much more than healthy.

  • Depends what we’re talking about.  Apples to Apples?  Watch out.  Otherwise…not so much.

  • I enjoy competitiveness, but I don’t think I am.

  • I only compete with myself

  • I try being competitive at times and it stresses me out so bad… fear of not doing well, fear of losing, stress stress stress.

But that’s more like in real life. If we’re talking video games, I’m much more competitive. Even aggressively so.

  • yes :] rawwrrrr.

  • garbage is piling up and the catapult is jammed. That is all.

  • I actually sabotage myself if I get into any kind of competition where someone wins and loses (at least in sports)  I love watching other people in sports, and team sports I’m pretty competitive.  But individually?  I hate beating someone.  I seriously hate beating people- for example, in Track.  I almost alwaysalwaysalways get next-to-last/last.  I could try my hardest- but I just physically will NOT beat someone I know I could beat.  I could train, and at practice- beat the fast person on the team- but at a meet?  I’d suck it up.  I just don’t… compete well individually- at least in athletics.

  • Not really. I seldom feel like I have to be first on the best at anything. I do feel a strong desire to do a good job at whatever I do.  It doesn’t have to be better than everyone else, I just need to know I did my best and it was a respectable job, and that I didn’t embarrase myself or anyone else.

  • winning’s not as important to me as learning from the journey.

  • I’m a pastry chef,so when it comes to things like that you might consider me competitive. I ,however do not. It’s more of a steel sharpening steel sort of thing. Anything else, no way! Competitive people really annoy me!!

  • No, I am not competitive.

  • In some ways, yeah.

  • I’d say no, because mostly I’m not. But I’d be lying, because partly I am.
To some degree we all are.

  • Depends onhow you define competitive… The common perspective is to thing of it as an “I win you lose” mentality, but you can also be competitive against yourself or against the status quo… just always striving to be better or do better. So a better question might be: Do you compete to be better than others, or do you compete to just be better?

  • Yes and no.  I used to be very competitive in every thing I do.  People can’t tell I’m that type of person through my outer appearance.  I have that shy, quite, sweet heart look.  But, actually I’m very tough on myself.  They don’t have no idea what they are in for.  One time I was playing a valley ball game with bunch of friends of my brother.  The guys originally thought I was a girly girl who can’t hit a ball for my life.  They were surprise to find out I can hit a valley ball over the net better than any of the other girls on the team.  Now, I am a lot less competitive.  It’s a shame because I have accomplish a lot more back then with that drive.  Nowadays, I only act competitive when there is motivation.  Being depressed all the time doesn’t help either.

  • geeky competitive in that I’m going to try to beat about 5000 other students into college

    and for scholarships

    and parking places on campus

  • Eh, not really.  I’m not a big game-player, and when I do play a game, I don’t care much if I win or not.

Now, in highschool, I was fairly competitive about things I cared about (like playing volleyball).  But even that, I think, was more about the dread of letting the team down.  Most of the sports I played were individual (you look for self-improvement, not beating someone else).  I did dance and tumbling as a little kid, horseback riding as a pre-teen, and martial arts in middle and highschool.  None of those are sports where you’re really competing against others.  I don’t think I’m competitive in the traditional sense.

  • No. I hate losing, but I also hate competing.

  • No, not really.  Every once in a while, but I’m very laid-back in most situations.

  • Not at all.  Competitive is just about the last thing I’d describe myself as.  There’s something to be said about not caring if you win or lose.

  • Not much, really. I don’t enjoy sports, I don’t like competitive games… I don’t like ultimate Frisbee… I like D&D because it’s cooperative. I choose to go into an industry that is non-competitive… not internally. (I work in traditional game production. Doesn’t matter how many games the other guy makes, all that matters is that someone can pick you out when they pop in a shop. In fact, if someone else is getting them in the shop often you also reap the benefits.)

I have no desire to compete. It bores me.

  • Not really.
