So You Think You Can Dance
My wife watches this show called “So You Think You Can Dance.” I never really get into these reality shows but I have watched a few of the dances.
I noticed that there are certain kinds of dances that I just don’t like to watch. I hate the ballet looking dances. It is boring to watch. I tend to like the hip hop dances.
1. Hip Hop
2. Ballet
3. Belly Dancing
4. Break Dancing
5. Swing Dance
6. Line Dancing (Country Dancing) This is also crappy because the stupid country music comes with it.
7. Popping
What type of dance to you most like to watch?

I LOVE ballet.
I used to take ballet classes.
Swing. I love watching it and dancing it.
None of the above. I love the contemporary routines they do.
ballet and break dancing
What’s ‘Popping’?
I like DDR dancing.
ballet
Hip-Hop followed by break dancing.
Swing dance.
i’d like to watch everyone who watches this show, be massacred.
just saying.
“synchronized asskicking”
If ballet is “boring to watch” it says far more about the person who is bored than about ballet.
It takes training and insight to understand and appreciate high culture. Not everything in life is part of the instant gratification of pop/mass culture. Take the time and effort to “get it” about ballet (and Bach, and Rembrandt) and the rewards and deep aesthetic satisfaction of true participation in high culture beat the alternative all to pieces. I’m not arguing for elitism here. But some types of culture really are better–once you humble yourself, learn a bit, and finally “see.”
What type of dancing would you like to see, Dan?
Technically it’s a form of figure skating, but I love ice dancing.
(And as MoBunshin said, Dance Dance Revolution is also fun to watch!)
depends on the music that accompanies the dance..
i like the slow (but powerful) one. I dont think its ballet though. Wait, now that you said ballet, they do those spins…hhmmmm
Theres foxtrot and waltz.
I havent heard country music on there yet. Lol, you said stupid country music. If you ever sit in my car Ill show you all the good mainstream songs. Youll love it! Haha
For me I wouldn’t mind seeing any of them but the country line dancing. That I just really don’t like.
@edlives - In the post “I tend to like the hip hop dances.”

Liquid Lock.
A combination of trance dancing, liquid, popping and some unpolished stepping.
When I dance in front of a mirror.
I like some couples country dancing too. It’s very nice.
Hip Hop.
The human body amazes me what it can do!
Swing Dance
Ballet, primarily.
Swing would be my second choice.
Swing dancing and break dancing, for sure.
definitely swing – it’s the most fun to watch and the music rocks!!!
None of the above.
Pole dancing: a true spectator’s sport.
Swing dancing. I’ve done this before and it’s fun.
I like to watch break dance.
If I had to pick I would choose belly dancing.
Hip Hop, Belly Dancing, Break Dancing, Swing Dance, and Popping I would watch. There’s not one I would choose over the others though. I agree with you, I can’t really watch ballet. I don’t quite catch on the movements and what they represent in a story . . . So to me the dancers are just floating around on stage. It sucks for me because a bunch of my friends went to see a Cinderella ballet production but I just couldn’t go with them. I think the only ballet production I would go watch would be The Nutcracker and that’s because it’s a childhood thing and I would probably enjoy all the funky colors and costumes.
Don’t forget the crumping- until Dancing with the Stars I did not even know there was such a thing. (although my dd says that she learned all about it on one of the Bring It On Movies.)
In order from my favorite on down to my least favorite of the So You Think You can Dance Styles:1,Broadway 2.Contemporary 3.Jive 4.HipHop 5.Breaking 6.Krumping 7. Swing 8. Latin Ballroom 9. R&B 10. European Ballroom
I have never seen Line Dancing on any of the shows, but I may stop watching if I did- I am with you- having to listen to country would make me sick.
Oh and the only style of dance I myself participate in is Slamming- but I don’t think you could make a game show out of that unless it was Demolition Derby- last person standing type show.
popping and breakdancing are always my favorite because they seem so much harder than the rest.
Swing — it makes me miss when 50s rockabilly and Hollywood glam came back for one final bang. I used to swing dance — was never terribly good but was always the smallest girl, so all the guys wanted to dance with me to throw me around. Got a few bruises, but still the most fun a person can have on the dance floor.
1. Belly Dancing
2. Swing
3. Linedancing
Where’s tap dancing? I don’t see it on your list. I love the old Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers movies. From your list, I would say ballet – especially professional companies – and swing.
Swing dance, hands down.
i love that show! but i haven’t been able to watch it really.
i love the hip hop routines mostly, the breakin and popping, but most of all, the contemporary pieces. i love the dances they do that have a bunch of styles mixed together, like one they did last year to Night of the Dancing Flame. the broadway they do is fantastic as well. my favorite was the dance Benji and Donyelle did i think two seasons ago.
I love to watch swing dancing, but I love ballroom dancing in general.
So You Think You Can Dance is totally awesome.
I like watching hip hop, and contemporary is cool as well.
HIP HOP! totally!
I’m going to have to say ballet because it is just so graceful and it always moves me.
table dances have always been my favorite.
Of those above, swing, ballet, break dancing… I’d probably watch most of them.
Not on the list: modern (when it’s not *too* weird), various cultural dances, and ballroom of all kinds.
Capoeira, though considered a form of martial art, is somewhat dance-like and also super-fun to watch.
ballet.
hip hop mix with popping or ballet.
I like hip-hop, break dance, swing, and ballet.
I only watch SYTYCD for the hip-hop dances
there isn’t actually any ballet on the show, it’s “contemporary” or “modern.”
but whatever, i like the really quirky stuff, so contemporary is something that i do like. but i love to Swing Dance, both watching and doing, and i love to watch/do contact improv, which is making up dances with partners on the spot.
Hip hop, with a nod to break dancing.
QUICK STEP!
I like the hip hop ones the best, they tend to be the most interesting. But the contemporary / comic book one that Matt and Kourtni did this week was my favorite, it was different and I couldn’t believe it when they got put in the bottom 3.
I like to watch pretty much all types, but especially ballet. Could be because I’m a ballerina, though.
None — I don’t care to watch any form of dancing.
I hate reality TV as well…
jazz and contemporary
I like watching any dance. I have an obsession with the perfection to dance.
But I really do enjoy hiphop/ break dancing
Someone needs to take a heavy stick and beat these people that make this crap over the head until they learn that reality tv is bullshit.
What the hell is “popping”?
I adore ballet- I took it long enough to appreciate how difficult it is, and for a short enough time that I’m still amazed at how easy the professionals make it look. Every time I see it I want to start again. My second choice is hip hop- although I now take bellydance, so most of the time when I watch it, I’m studying.
None of the above
Hip-hop ballet
Its hard to choose! But i must say my favorite dacing to watch is the “dance like no one is looking” Dance. I am basically the Queen of that!
lol
The naked type.
except for belly dancing, i tend to like it all…
but i really liked this past week’s lyrical hip hop… and the contemporary wasn’t bad, either.
Swing dancing. I love to belly dance, though, and I totally want to take classes.
skank/rocksteady and flash dance.
christopher walken in the “weapon of choice” music video is AMAZING.
ballet and swing…but really anything as I’m a dancer myself..
I like watching swing it looks like so much fun!
Swing, it’s got great music and looks fun.
Don’t know what “popping” is.
I didn’t see pole dancing or lap dancing on the list. They should really throw those two in.
I like watching break dancing. It amazes me.
But in my moments of romanticism waltzing couples will make me sigh wistfully.
I really enjoy watching swing dancing. Actually don’t mind doing it either.
OHHH I know someone who’s on that show! ^_^ Well, at least I think she’s still on it, I haven’t seen it lately… Anybody know if Kourtni is still on?
But in all honesty, I’m not much for watching dance… I’d rather be doing it. Not that I could do any type of dance move to save my life… =_=”
I like watching break dance/ hip hop because I think it’s the most creative movements you can come up with body motion.
What about Ballroom Dance? Waltz, Tango, Quickstep, Cha Cha, Rumba, Jive, Salsa, Samba!!!
Oh and as a ballroom dancer, I still find ballet very boring and very stupid.
I like all of them- except for the quick step. That dance is incredibly boring.
But, I love that show in general.
I like the modern/lyrical/balletish dances that you don’t like. They, imo, show a lot of technical ability which, as a former ballet dancer, I really appreciate.
I also LOVE any broadway stuff and most of the hip hop stuff as well.
I love all dancing, theres not one dance I would pick over the other especially on that show.
@HeartOfPandora - Kourtni is still on, she was in the bottom 3 last week though.
@caliangel88006 - Thanks! ^_^
I like it all. The kids are so good—all of them. I don’t know how they eliminate any of them.
pretty much everything….except some contemporary…
all about the hip hop!
Anything that requires a pole.
Break.
Haha, I’m just starting to get into that show! Does your wife ever phone in? I always wondered how many people actually dial into those shows, and if the show makes any money from it.
The last reality TV I watched was 1st and 2nd seasons of Dancing with the Stars, which got boring really quickly in the 2nd season. This one is actually fun to watch b/c contestants have a lot of talent.
Hip hop, popping, and bellydance. They require technique like the rest but are manage to effuse a certain soulful/sensual and vibrant quality.
Hip Hop and Popping
I love it all, but I have to say really good Popping is amazing to watch. How do they do that?
Stupid country music?? Excuse me…STUPID country music??? Country music is great and line dancing is so much fun I do it every Friday night. (Thus, it is also my favorite to watch)
Having been a dancer for 12 years of my life- there’s very few dance forms I don’t care for. Perhaps my biggest pet peeve is club dancing- you know the kind where a bunch of sweaty noisy teenagers get on the dance floor at their prom or whatever and look like they’re having an epiliptic seizure that just won’t stop? ugh.
i prefer choreographed, well polished dances whether they be ballet, tap, modern, any variation of jazz or broadway style. Swing and square dances are fun to watch and perform as well. I also like it when dances are a blend of two distinct types of dance- such as modern and ballet or tap and hip hop. I’m hoping someday hubby and I will get into ballroom dancing- something i’ve always wanted to do (long before Dancing with the Stars came out) because pas de deux wasn’t available at my dance academy due to lack of male dancers:( It’d be a great way to keep in shape and have fun with just hubby and I- not to mention sexy and romantic:):):)
Headbanging to fullout rock!!!
I like the contemporary stuff, and the broadway stuff.
Can’t stand krumping or disco.
ballet. it takes an incredible amount of skill and technique, especially for how effortless the people make it look. it’s much more difficult than people give it credit for. ballet all the way.
i like ball room dancing and watching all that stuff that comes along on “step up” “step up 2″ ” americas best dance crew”
i like watching grass dancers and ladies shawl dancers
the regalia is beautiful and the drum groups and singers take ya home
i like all except belly and line dancing, but don’t a lot of these (like breaking and popping) fall under “hip hop”?
BALLROOM DANCING!
FLAMENCO DANCING!
1)Ballet
2)Hip/Hop3)Popping
And a combination of all three!!!!!
Irish dance, obviously.
it’s a blast to watch and do!!!
