  • Gender Boundaries and Clothing

Some of the clothing that will be coming out soon will continue to blur the line between men and women clothing.

I was just reading an article about how Paris designers are blurring the gender boundaries.  Here is the link:  Link

Does it annoy you when clothing is design to cross gender boundaries?

  • very much so

  • I like transvestites.

    Especially Executive Transvestites.

  • …why would it?

  • Yikes! Umm, yea.

  • first of all the gold pants are just ugly for men OR women, and the second guy is just a homo. leave those trannys alone

  • nah. people are becoming more open with the idea

  • **snickers at first picture** No straight man should wear clothes like that.

I have a friend who is a cross-dresser, he looks more like a woman than some women I know.
    He’s terrific.

  • That’s not a blurry line – it’s clearly crossed over. It annoys me that designers are so out of touch with reality. It annoys me that designers can no longer come up with anything good and insist on cramming this kind of crap down the throat of a gullible public.

  • The only lines are the ones that society has made. We blurred the hell out of them when women started wearing pants; that’s considered normal now.

Skirts and tunics used to be common on men; Scotland doesn’t give a damn if people think their kilts are emasculating.

Although that hat is ugly. And who wears gold pants in real life? He looks like he’s got plate armor on….plate armor that turns to cloth.

  • Skinny Jeans Rule!!

No heck no, Let everyone wear whatever they want to…. sheeez!
Everybody can say the negative but what about when someone comes up to you and says,”Hey ,I dont like what YOU are wearing, you should chANGE”

People: stop  trying to run EVERYBODY ELSE’S way of living.

Again, Skinny Jeans Rock and Rule…

    YEP ^_^

  • all I know is, I do not wear pink. Not that pink’s a bad color, it’s a very nice color. But I’m not doing it.

  • No, I use to like Boy George’s style.

  • @SunshineOnARainyDays - I know perfectly straight guys WITH girlfriends that wear jeans like that…
You should worry about what you wear..haha I really dont care what you wear, but yeah REAL MEN can get away with whatever they want to wear.

    ^_^

    Deanna

  • I couldn’t care less. All I wear are jeans and t-shirts anyway.

  • @another_rebel_without_a_cause - I couldn’t agree more!

Although, I will add this: Binary gender is a BAD IDEA.

  • Yeah, it does.

  • @VaultESL - even though I have four pink tops can we still be friends?

  • these are new stuff?

  • Clothes don’t make the man  or woman

  • Whatever – to each their own I suppose.  If they want to look like idiots – more power to them.

  • The gear shown isn’t gender-blurring, it’s just plain ugly. It’s the stuff bad comedians wear when they run out of dialogue. I might wear that hat if I was drunk and it was Christmas. Otherwise I wouldn’t use it as a pisspot.

  • Erg. What ugly pants. And hat.

I don’t know anyone who would wear either of those.

And no, I don’t care. GO EDDIE IZZARD.

  • Not a bit.

A man in drag is sexy.
I honestly love trannies… though i have to say the gold pants are more metrosexual than actually blurring the gender boundary. I have straight male friends who would be proud to wear those pants (and gay ones too).
I  think people are too judgmental and should just live and let live. That being said I’m judging all you who have a problem with it as judgmental. We’re all hypocrites- get used to it.
But seriously, guys in drag turn me on.

  • You call that within the boundary?  They done declared war!

  • So, do you think it would be okay if I found an awesome jaket designed to be for these cross over guys and I am a girl and I wear it instead? Because it looks like it should be for girls? Maybe I should just start buying things from the guys section of stores.

  • @logicalemu - lol most level headed and sensible comment yet

  • I don’t think so because usually I just hate the style on both men and women, or the things I at first dislike grow on me.

  • No, people are becoming more open to couture fashion concepts. Alot of young japanese men are wearing make up and really putting in an effort to look ‘good’. Men who look very well kepted or enjoy some funky style are often stereotyped ‘pretty boys’ or ‘gay’ but that’s not the case. Even if you don’t love it ( I certainly don’t, especially the pink ) we still need to keep an open mind.

  • Not at all, and it shouldn’t. Clothing is just an outer layer; not even a mentionable reflection of one’s self.

  • I hate it when men wear girls’ jeans.

  • Eh.  I just keep to my side of the boundary.  I’m old enough to buy my own clothes.

  • Those items of clothing are just plain ugly.

  • @valis10 - They might not make them, but they sure tell a lot about them

  • That pretty much explains it all right there, Paris Designers!

  • Ugly is ugly…. that’s all there is to it.

  • I could care less about ‘gender boundaries’. I just don’t like it, because it’s UGLY.

  • if its that extreeme, then yes.

  • I don’t mind, but I wont be wearing them.

Wait, I wear makup. I have women’s sunglasses.

And I wear giant pants. Those skinny leg jeans are fugly.

My look was supposed to be pretty boy serial killer.

  • Only if they’re ugly, like the pieces featured above.  *shudder*

  • the pink and lavender go very well together. not

  • No because no one really wears such crap. At least no one who matters

  • @chinchujin - People generally find it more acceptable for girls to wear guys clothing than the other way around.

@RememberYouTomorrow - I think clothes speak a great deal about the decisions that one makes in life.

  • @trunthepaige - You’re talking about one of my best friends there, so shut the hell up about things you have NO idea about.  You can spew whatever lies you want about religion and politics, but you have crossed a serious line here.

@SpiritualBattlefield - Just because I think what someone’s wearing is ugly, doesn’t mean that I demand him to change.
And skinny jeans make me feel awful.  They won’t fit over my large man-calves.

  • It’s rather bizarre, yes.

And, well, considering those two pictures, I’d say no one should wear those…  I just don’t get fashion trends.

  • Personally, I don’t like it… but people will do what they want.

  • yes its completely gay.

  • In his famous work, Screwtape Letters, CSL states clearly that one of the scheme’s of the devil is to make women look, slender, sleek, and in fact, to look like ‘little boys’.

  • I wound not date someone who wears those type of design clothing.  I want to be the only girl in the relationship.

  • This is only in high fashion. I doubt it will trickle down to your average Joe. I doubt your average Joe would want to be caught dead dressed like that. I’ve heard of androgynous clothing but this is ridiculous.

  • …That second pic is beyond the beyond. Transvestitism is one thing, but expecting guys who don’t roll that way to dress like… that… is just unreasonable.

On the female side of things, I hate those little shirts they’ve taken up selling at Wal-Mart… they’re in the women’s section but look like they were designed for twelve-year-old boys. Not cute. I’m not the most lady-ish thing around, but I won’t dress like a boy.

  • ha, not really.  Who defines what kind of clothing is masculine or feminine anyway?  Get a load of this guys pink heels

  • only if it doesn’t look good.

I don’t like some of the things women wear that are made for women, and the same with men.

some people just don’t have style like I do.

  • I understand that women need to look a little more manly to ensure they get respect in the workplace sometimes.  But men definitely don’t need to look more feminine!  I think both sexes should embrace the fact that they’re different and just accept that there are boundaries.  Our gender is part of what defines us!  Women wear suit sets modeled after men’s suits, but they’re tailored so that you can still tell they’re women.  That’s great!  That comes from undeniable power struggles between men and women ever since women entered the workforce.  But to make men’s pants tighter?  For men to wear makeup?  That’s crossing the line too much for me.  And there’s no obvious reason except to be rebellious and different.

  • people actually dress like that?

  • A guy should look like a guy, not a girly girl.

  • The first pic isn’t SOOO bad as the second one…but in any case, I really don’t think this trend will catch on.

  • I don’t believe frilly pink hats, colorful scarves, or skinny jeans (shiny or not) blur boundaries at all. Men who wear that stuff, to me, look like they’re trying to look like women. I have no problem with transgender/transexuals/drag of any sort, however, it’s hard for me to believe a straight man would wear those things seriously. Emo, scene, it doesn’t matter. If you’re a dude and you wear skinny jeans (with your creepy, ugly, skinny chicken legs) I am fully assuming you’re transsexual/transgender….or are trying WAY too hard to fit in with you’re weird scene/emo girl counterparts.

  • It bothers me greatly. It used to be that you could clearly make your orientation known by the way you dressed. Now the str8s are dressing just like us and you can’t tell what side of the river anyone is on anymore.

So, str8 guys, if you don’t want to get hit on by Gays, don’t dress like we do. Damn the metrosexuals!

    Michael

  • it doesn’t really annoy me, but for some reason im more open to the idea of women wearing men’s clothes than men wearing women’s clothes…

  • Man, annoy me? I love this stuff.

    I mean, I won’t wear it, but I think it’s great.

  • It annoys me when people dressed like idiots is considered fashion. What annoys my even more is when everyone jumps on the band wagon and thinks it’s a great idea.

  • It doesn’t bother me.

  • I don’t like pink on men.

  • A lot of people don’t seem to understand that those designs are for high fashion runway… those are not pants you can go buy at the GAP. High fashion is art. If you don’t like it don’t drop $2,000 to buy it. And furthermore, we have been blurring the lines between man and woman for decades. Evolution is inevitable; even when it comes to fashion. You can fight it or you can rock out to it! =D

  • Nobody ever wears what “fashion” designers throw together for a show, it’s just hype and publicity.  You’ll never see it at your local shop.  “The dogs bark but the caravan moves on”.

  • not overboard. but andro is cooler than macho.

  • I don’t see that hat becoming a major, or even minor, trend in mens fashion.

But remember, once upon a time, women were quite bold to wear trousers, or pants as we might say today.

Fashion is always changing and evolving, and with it the boundaries and norms.

  • @ETCACTOR - you make a good point.

  • i’m totally cool.. as long as it rocks their boat.

  • nah.. they’re just clothes.  clothes do not define gender.

    and

i wear boy jeans.  stanley blacker because i like them, not because i have some psychosocial statement to make about my intimate preferences.

those gold jeans are pretty funny though.

  • I will confess it is confusing…

  • Not at all, however, I do think men should steer clear of manpris.  Not because I think it’s annoying, but because it’s just not a good look.

  • no, But seeing a guy or man in the pink hat is a bit awkward.

  • Doesn’t annoy me; I just don’t buy it. It’s really rather simple for me.

  • That second image is so glam rock. Why are they trying to bring that mess back? It looks so wrong.

  • I’m very unclear how the second picture blurs gender..

  • Nothing says manly like a pair of beaten up Levi’s and a plain white t-shirt.  Sorry, I like my men like I like my steak…RAW!

  • I really dont care what others people wear- They have the right to be comfortable in whateve they chose…HOWEVER, I dont know any man (Gay or otherwise) that we be cought in that rediculous hat & scarf combo. And that hair…OH MY! The gay people I know have much better sense of style.

  • A man should look like a man and a woman a woman.

  • big time

    no doubt

    hell yeah

    damn straight

  • it’s a little early for Halloween, isn’t it? i guess i’m mostly numb to it by now although some things were just never meant to be shared by the opposite sex…. bras, thongs for starters. but i’m not into the whole “outfit police” thing. i just try to ignore people who dress obscenely…

although, i will say this: employers should have the right to demand adherence to workplace dress code from their employees. i know of a case where a man won a lawsuit over his employer for being fired for coming to work as a cross dresser. I think that employers who are paying you to do your job have the right to demand a certain measure of professionality of their employees- and there shouldn’t be exception taken in regards to that just because some guy feels feminine that day or some girl feels masculine. Feelings are not what rules as king here- the customer does- and to cause your employer to lose business with customers over your gender confusion is unfair and just plain selfish.

  • *cringe*

    Skinny jeans.

  • Yes it certainly does!!!  I like my men manly and in manly clothes!

  • I don’t really care what other people do, but for myself, I prefer it when people look at me and know I’m a girl.  And my SO better look like a guy.

  • Annoy me? Nope, not at all. I like a little gender ambiguity in clothing sometimes, and I’m fine with men wearing women’s jeans, for example. Seriously, I think men are kind of limited with clothing – women broke through to being allowed to wear menswear-inspired things, (and pants, of course) a while ago, but men have less options. Let them wear skirts if they want to, and makeup. That said, no one should wear that hat.

  • No. Clothing SHOULD cross gender boundaries. It’s dumb when there are clothes that only girls can wear or only guys can wear.

  • If someone dresses in another person’s clothing then -

    Wait NVM.

  • It kind of freaks me out when boys wear girl pants. I mean, girl pants are made for girls who have, well, a very different anatomy than boys, obviously. I would think girl pants on a boy would…compromise something…

  • No it doesn’t bother me one bit.  To all those who it does bother… why should it bother you? No one is forcing you to wear “gender bending” clothes now are they? Those who want to wear those type of clothes have been wearing those type of clothes long before those egotistical Paris designers started making them.

  • No.

I just can’t stand when men who feel like men and want to be treated like men dress like women and think it’s manly. Because.. it’s not. Wearing pink is not manly. Neither is mascara or lipstick.

  • THRIFT STORES. Where you can find the good old stuff.

    I don’t have to worry about my clothing. They just keep getting more feminine. B) But mens clothing can be worn by women now. o-o;

    Tough, guys. Tough.

  • emo’s and rednecks have been doing it forever – example: way too tight straight leg jeans.

  • No, I think it looks like great fun.

  • Yeah, sometimes.

I like my men to be men

  • Yes, it annoys me because gender boundaries aren’t fabricated stereotypical bullshit.

  • YES!!! those gold pants are ugly!

  • Girls wearing boy’s clothes is a fashion choice. Boys wearing girl’s clothes is a life choice.

  • @PSUnited1 - Yeah…I’m with you on that…

    and with Vault…about pink.

Men’s wear is for men and women’s clothes…for…you guessed it…women…none shall the two meet.

  • Why can’t we go back to the days when women wore girl clothes and men wore oil and dirt stained denim and non-descript tshirts?

  • it irritates me alot,I think it’s tacky, but then again, what do I know? I’m not exactly a “fashionista”

  • Haha. I actually love it.
I have quite a thing for my pretty boys.
    Bottom line: do it tastefully.
(I’m totally digging the gold pants…^^)

  • Everyone should be able to dress the way they want. If I wanna wear baggy pants one day and a mini skirt the next I should be able to just like a guy wanting to wear a skirt. In high school I knew a guy who liked wearing a long skirt that looked like pants and he was straight. He just enjoyed wearing it.

  • oh snaps! That would be awesome to wear baggie pants and a super big t-shit and have people not give a damn!!

  • fuckin hate that shit
if i want to date a girl ill date a girl
if i want to date a dude ill date a dude
dont go messin with the system and lookin all queer

  • Does it annoy you?

  • It should not surprise me since most of the designers are homosexual Barack Hussein Obama Jr. supporters.

  • Only as much as I am annoyed with doing a double take

  • Considering the fact that today I wore men’s dickies shorts and a men’s t-shirt, and I commonly wear fedoras and cowboy boots (not together though), I’d have to say no.

  • No.

I think it’s about the greatest thing ever.

  • @saintvi - What the fuck is “reality”? The shit they’re doing with clothing is reality. It’s real, it’s life, and it’s happening right now.

  • I’m all right for crossing gender boundaries, but the examples shown above are definitely not in good taste.

  • nope this isn’t crossgender. it’s just plain ol, gay.

  • if they go all out and do it completely, like a man wearing a dress with pink sequins, then i don’t mind, but when it’s guys just wearing girl pants and their own shirts and shoes and faggy haircuts, then it annoys me a bit.

  • Can’t say I care much. Let them wear what they want. As long as they aren’t hurting anyone no one should really care unless they’re just being judgmental.

  • Well, I’m usually not a huge fan of what models wear in general, crossing gender boundaries or not.

And I do like the fact that because of this, uhm, really extreme form of crossing that boundary, we’re overall becoming more okay with the idea.

  • Yes, big time.  And what is this teaching the younger kids???  Think of how confused you are/were.  The kids are probably ten times more confused than that.

  • Nope not at all Go jeffree star.

  • There are just some things men were not meant to wear! The whole thing goes beyond annoyance!

  • It annoys me when genders, cross boundaries.

  • Doesn’t bother me a single bit, although the bottom picture is just tacky. o___o;;

     Wear and let wear, though.

  • i dont think it will annoy me, i mean, in the…60′s? or something like that it was in. I just think it depends on the way they do that. If you want to blend gender lines, they need to, BLEND. I believe that takes steps that gradually come together. the example in your picture is too drastic.

  • top photo’s great, bottom photo’s scary.

  • I blur the lines because I hate them. The funny thing is, they only really exist for men. I wear skirts, kilts, eye liner, have long hair, paint my nails (more than just black, even) and more. Why shouldn’t I? Why should that bother someone? There isn’t any reason other than a desire to put males in one box and females in another. Blurry lines make it harder for people to place others in the boxes they need so they can understand them. I go around with a skirt and have a beard that is half a foot long. It makes small brains break.

I love to blur the lines. If I don’t, who will?

  • Hmm…  What’s that sound?

    Is that rain?

(That was a reference to Noah’s flood which God used to wash away the wicked back in the day.)

  • Yes, it does. I realize most of it is cultural, but it bugs the heck outta me. I blame it on this old idea that there is no difference between the genders aside from the physical. And people wonder why people’s sexual identities are getting screwed up. It’s because of crap like this!

  • Not really. I like girly men.

  • No, not in the least. In fact, I’m a big fan of erasing gender boundaries altogether.

Although…those are freaking ugly clothes, haha. At least have some taste.

  • @paladincarver: Exactly! Clothing is clothing, and really, its only purpose is to be comfortable and keep you covered. I don’t see why males are put into such tight restrictions when it comes to gender boundaries. I have found that it’s a little more socially acceptable for females to crossdress, or even be a bit masculine, but it still hasn’t been completely absorbed into the norm. Also, it bugs me that anyone who likes to push these boundaries is assumed to be homosexual or transgendered. While quite a large number of people are, there are plenty of heterosexuals who are also open-minded and like to challenge the norm, especially in the area of gender. There was an incident a while ago where my girlfriend (who happened to be looking quite masculine this particular day) was in a public bathroom and was asked to please leave, that she had came into the wrong one. She politely corrected them, of course, but it bugged us a little bit, nonetheless.

Okay, rant over, haha. I went a little overboard, I apologize. This is a big issue for me.

  • @Koolou - Yeahh. That was irrelevant, not to mention an awful ‘reference’.

  • @paoguy118 - How does Obama even have *anything* to do with this?

  • Try living in Bangkok.  This is the stuff I see every day…

  • I can hardly call it annoying – more like inevitable.  After all, it is discrimination to limit a type of clothing to only one gender.

  • @heartsneedabeat - Actually, considering the topic (the part about gender-bending) I think it was very relevant.

As for the reference I believe it was quite appropriate.  Though you’re right, God’s wrath can be quite aweful.

  • I’ve seen all sorts of bizzare trash peddled on Paris and New York runways over the years.  It doesn’t bother me because I realize that no one in the real world is going to be caught dead in them anyway.  Even if they could afford them!  The only people who attend those functions (or who even consider wearing something being displayed) are the socially “elite” who want to be seen.  They naturally don’t understand (or care) that the rest of the world is laughing at them.

  • Not particularly, no…

  • I don’t really care.

and I would comment any man with the fashion sense in that first picture. That outfit really does look good.
