Bottled Water
The tide has been turning against bottled water. I buy bottled water by the case. I was just reading an article that was mentioning that environmentalist want us to give up our bottled water because of the harm the bottles will do to the environment. Here is the link: Link
Are you willing to give up your bottled water for the good of the environment?
Comments (182)
yes. i would. not much for bottled stuff anyway.
Nope. I like my bottled water thanks.
YES
already did
Sure… but we recycle ours… doesn’t it make a difference?
sure.. is there a way to use like another material for the bottle?
I’ve never really drank it. So I would have nothing to give up. But if i did i would probably give it up.
I prefer tap water anyway
Of course I would.
I enjoy my tap water actually.
I would. I buy water in re-usable gallons anyway. We go to this one place to fill up our bottle bi-monthly.
No. One person can’t make a difference.
@angi1972 - Ditto
yes
Um…I’ll certainly considering reducing the amount of bottled water I buy.
I’m saving money so I can invest in a faucet filter or one of those filter pitchers. I try to find a good plastic bottle and keep it for a while, just cleaning it out and stuff. I think the longest I’ve had one was for three months.
i already have… brita filter’s whole campaign is that the bottles of water aren’t really a great idea. before that campaign even started, i stopped buying as much bottles of water and started carrying my own nalgene bottle of water (filtered, just like the bottled kind) and i have a filter in my refrigerator door, so it makes it easy to fill it with a bunch of ice, and it stays cold all day.
f.y.i. it’s also cheaper! i spend a lot less money on the filters (even though they are kind of expensive) than i did on bottled water a month.
Why not? I don’t really drink from bottled waters anyway, so it won’t be that big of a transition. If you need H2O to go, try a reusable plastic bottle, the ones with the thicker plastic (so it lasts longer) and fill up on water from home. I think it’s cheaper that way.
I prefer my tap water.
I’m not much of a bottled water person. :
It’s the same plastic they use for pop bottles. Where’s the outcry against that? Since I almost never buy bottled soft drinks, I don’t feel guilty about the occasional bottle of water I buy at the theater or the fast food drive through. I either wash and reuse the bottles or recycle them with the other plastics. Michigan has considered adding a deposit to bottled water, just like they do to other bottled and canned drinks and I’m fine with that.
@angi1972 - recycling does help… in the article (which i read before reading this post) it does say that all the guilt is erased from the recycling of the bottles. BUT not all places recycle. my aunt’s town doesn’t have recycling, and in order to recycle any of their products, they have to drive over an hour to a recycling facility, so very few people, if any at all, recycle in her area. offices don’t always offer recycling either, but they almost always offer bottled drinks from vending machines.
I drink bottle and tap water.
When we go abroad we drink bottled water during the day and to clean our teeth with.
@mcourt916 - Thanks mcourt! I was lazy today and didn’t hit the link.
@angi1972 - haha its okay, i had to do a presentation on this topic actually, so i know a lot about everything going on with it
No..I’m sorry, but I can’t give up my bottled water.
Boil water from the tap and use a reusable bottle for taking drinking water with you when you go out.
It’s that simple.
we’ve already stopped using water bottles. we use a Brita water pitcher now.
I don’t usually get bottled water, I usually get bottled juice.
I might be willing, but I don’t use bottled water anyway.
No, but there is to be a bottled water deposit coming into effect soon from what I have heard. We have a deposit on all sodas and drinks, IDK why the rest of the US doesn’t.
never drank it.
@huginn - hahahaha.
i’m going to laugh and assume you are joking because the alternative would mean that you are being serious… and I can’t believe that.
Let’s say for the sake of argument that one person can’t make a difference (which I disagree with). But if a million “one persons” chose to do their part anyway… look at all the good they could do.
If everybody thought like that the world would have already imploded.
Of course I would give up bottled water. Actually I rarely drink it now; only when I’m on the go. But really, I could buy one non-disposable water bottle and refill it all the time to fill that purpose. We don’t need bottled water.
This reminds me of Wall-E..looks like he made those blocks haha!
I already have. I use a plastic water bottle and fill it up with my filtered refrigerator tap water. My parents still buy it by the case though, but they recycle theirs. I still think it’s better to drink filtered or tap water over bottled regarding your health. Whether you recycle the bottle afterwards or not, harmful chemicals are said to be released into the water when it gets to a high temperature or becomes worn in.
I don’t know. I know lotta_valdez won’t like it, but I like my bottled water.
Sorry lotta! But you know, Brita does give a pretty nice result if you keep your filters fresh and the water chilled, so maybe I’d consider giving it up.
no, plastic bottles can be recycled , the city or town people live in provide recycling bin
No, my personal comfort is more important than the future of this planets ecosystem. =)
Oh okay, I’m just kidding. I actually don’t buy bottled water at all, I use my trusty thermos.
I used to drink bottled water because it tastes better than my tap water, and I could easily take it to work. But it is something so easy to give up because I have a Brita water filter and also the Brita water pitcher, so it cleans my tap water and makes it taste as good as bottled water. If I want water while I’m at work I’ll just bring a reusable bottle of it. ^_^
Please try to give it up people, it is SO easy to do.
SURE they can be recycled, but RECYCLING USES A LOT OF ENERGY so it is best to just not use the bottled water altogether.
Who needs bottled water? I think it’s proof that our society can sell anything, and not only do they get away with it, but the consumers are actually stupid enough to buy it! “I’ll go buy some water. I know I can get it for free out of my tap, but THIS kind comes from a bottle, therefore it must be better!” …
So yes.
@beachblondie711 - Let’s say for the sake of argument that one person can’t make a difference (which I disagree with). But if a million “one persons” chose to do their part anyway… look at all the good they could do.
I am an ordinary Joe. In my circles of friends, I’m valued, but I’m not so important that they would follow my stead in fashion, ideology, or political leaning. The personal decisions I make, then, is in isolation. My very decision to use or repudiate bottled water cannot penetrate and alter the mindset of others.
Perhaps, if I were famous like a George Clooney or a Michael Jordan, I can actively campaign and change minds with the weight of fame; but I’m not quite this vain.
No, because I fucking recycle.
I try, but my weakness is when I go on a long car trip or fly somewhere. I tend to pick up a bottle to drink while traveling, rather than bringing a bottle to fill.
they are in the process (or maybe they already did pass it i forget), to pass a bill or something that bans bottled water from the city of Seattle. Personally, i think it’s dumb, b/c i USE my bottle for a month or longer before getting rid of it. ever notice that some of the bottles state do not reuse? well if you tell peeps not to reuse the stoopid things, instead of recycling them, they ARE gonna fill up the landfills. reuse reuse reuse people!! it won’t kill you!!! i can think of many uses for my bottle….my kids get a bottle, and they use the hell out of it…for things like water, juice, etc…they freeze them, then they got a GIANT “otter pop” so to speak. so simple. it’s great for going to the park too. (ever notice you end up spending more money for things like drinks, when all you gotta do is give them a big bottle of water and tell them have at it?) lol….silly stuff…
@bizyma - , i think it’s dumb, b/c i USE my bottle for a month or longer before getting rid of it. ever notice that some of the bottles state do not reuse?
Ditto. I haven’t died of plastic poisoning yet.
I only use bottles so that I can always keep my water handy.
I do not drink bottled water. I am fortunate to have clean tap water. I do not understand why environmental groups think bottle water is so bad for the environment. I thought the championed recycling. If you recycle your bottles what is the problem?
@huginn - exactly my point. stoopid media hype. everyone is supposed to freak out b/c the labels say DON’T DON’T DON’T…but then they turn right around and do something like this?? seriously. i hate the TV. i hate advertising for this crap…..
I plan to give up my bottled water as soon as I can afford a brita filter.
I really don’t understand why so many are going crazy over the plastic bottles used to bottle water. Plastic is used for all sorts of things and no one bitches about it. Let’s see… how many things can I list that are contained in plastic containers? I’m just going to look around my own house and list them. See, if you have these same items in your home, and think of how many others have them in their home and how much these items are polluting the earth. breath mint containers, medicine bottles (prescriptions and over the counter), shampoo and conditioner bottles, soft soap bottles, dish detergent bottles, laundry detergent bottles, fabric softener bottles, various bottles full of cleaning products (windex, bleach, Lysol floor cleaner, lysol multi-purpose cleaner, furniture polish, bathroom cleaner, ect), plastic soda/slushi cups from local convienence store, plastic uternsils, various bottles containing herbs and spices I cook with, soda bottles (various sizes), milk containers, orange juice containers, various jars of condiments and food in my refrigerator and cabinets, I’m pretty sure I could go on and on and on and on… but I have to go to a doctor’s appointment soon… besides I’m pretty sure ya’ll get the drift. Stop yer bitchin’ about bottled water when all of us use plastic each and every day and it all eventually ends up in the same place… the landfill!
Of course, bottled water has it’s benefits (portability for trips).
But Yes. People are so easily tricked into thinking bottled water is cleaner. IT’S NOT! It’s too bad people get fooled so easily.
Also, PPL should recommend this post to spread the word.
I rarely drink bottled water, but if I buy bottled water, I reuse it several times before I toss it.Â
You damned well better be or I will F*CK your sh*t UP!!!!
I try to buy it as little as possible but sometimes I need it.
I gave up bottled water so I could look down at most everyone else.
I use the same bottle again and again, I refill it from the cooler or my brita filter.
It’s not only about the bottles. Consuming bottled water has other environmental costs like the gas used to ship bottled water, and the carbon emitted by these trucks. Also, if people continue to support these private water companies, clean drinking water for the public may soon be a thing of the past. And the poor will not even be able to afford clean water. We have clean tap water now, so why pay for it, especially with all the environmental and social consequences?
@saintvi - I think there’s an outcry against water bottles because you don’t really NEED to buy water in a bottle since you can get it from a faucet, versus lacking pop faucets. Like an unnecessary evil type thing.
West Virginia doesn’t have a recycling program either, and it bothers me. In Florida there was a recycle bin that came along with the house you bought, and it was included in your taxes, along with your garbage. We have a separate bill every month here in WV for garbage, wth is that. Anyway..
@GhostBenjimon - and that’s why I lurve you!
Are we going to give up polyester next? Where do these idiots think ALL kinds of plastics come from?
I say we give up environmentalists!!!
I would if we had clean water.
I either recycle them or use them again and again (and THEN recycle them). But, if I knew it was a real threat I’d be willing to give them up.
i always thought bottled water was stupid and a waste.
so yes, i’ll happily give it up
I always drink out of one of those plastic camelbac water bottles. The reuseable ones. The ones that apparently give you cancer now.
yeah. see? I’m so hardcore for the environment I’m getting CANCER for it.
yes. the bottled water isn’t much cleaner than tap
No because I drink Propel flavored water, which doesn’t come standard out of a typical faucet. However I don’t typically drink plain ol’ bottled water unless I’m at a fair or festival with no drinking fountains.
@AllMyNamesAreTaken - So are you saying people NEED to buy bottled pop? And I’m sorry, but there are “pop faucets” in any fast food restaurant. I do understand the point you’re making, I just think environmentalists pick whatever issues will get them the most publicity. It’s like when they targeted McDonald’s for their packaging. McDonald’s didn’t do anything differently from most other fast food chains, but instead of going after fast food packaging in general, they went on a big campaign against McDonald’s for the publicity value. That’s what they’re doing with bottled water. I’m not convinced these environmental groups care as much about the environment as they do about their own 15 minutes of fame.
No. I don’t like drinking out of cups.xo
@huginn - oh, so you were serious?
You don’t have to have influence. You could just do it. And a million other strangers could just do it, not because you did, but because they thought it was a small easy thing they could do to help. Maybe they read it on TheTheologiansCafe, and decided to say yes instead. Bottomline, progress is still being made.
If you have reasons for not wanting to stop drinking bottled water, not recycling, or anything of that nature… then fine. I would respect them. But I don’t think “I’m not important enough to make a difference” should really be one of those reasons.
P.S. – I’m just an average joe.. er… jane? And I helped maintain a recycling program at my high school. I am working on organizing one at my current workplace as well. I don’t really consider these big accomplishments so i’m not trying to sound high and mighty. I’m just trying to make a point that ANYONE can make a small difference… it has to start somewhere.
@saintvi - good point. some environmentalists actually drive me crazy with their “all talk and no sense” methods. but i just think bottled water is being targeted because it would be the easiest thing for people to give up. They know more has to be done. But they also know not everyone is willing to do it. A step’s a step, right?
… and since bottled water is purchased on such a large scale, like McDonalds, targeting it will (hopefully) result in the largest reduction of waste.
DEFINITELY!!! Bottled water is soo bad, The problem is mostly the plastic, but spring water is vey bad as well, it drains the environment and kills fish and wild life.
just get a reusable plastic or metal bottle and fill it up with filtered tap or well water. btw, your filtered well water is probably cleaner and better tasting than spring water.
@beachblondie711 - You could just do it. And a million other strangers could just do it, not because you did, but because they thought it was a small easy thing they could do to help.
Sure, and if I didn’t do it; then it would be a million minus one doing it. One out of a million makes for a very small fraction.
If you have reasons for not wanting to stop drinking bottled water, not recycling, or anything of that nature… then fine. I would respect them.
For me, it’s a matter of convinence. On the go, alternatively bottled water isn’t readily avalaible. The negligable impact I personally have on the environment isn’t worth giving up access to water from vending machines and conviencnce stores.
And I helped maintain a recycling program at my high school. I am working on organizing one at my current workplace as well.
This makes you much better than average. Major props.
But I lead a busy life– with work, lab, and school. I’m not willing to sacrifice my time and interests for environmental campigning.
But I like my water to come from a gushing stream of purity up in some remote mountain…
Yes I could give it up. I don’t drink it anyway.
sure i have a water filter so i just feel up my bottle and go it’s fine with me.
First off thast’s why we recyle the plastic in the bottles. Second there are filters for the tap in this day and age.
And Finally: I rarely drink bottled water.
For the environment? No. To save money? Yes. We just refill bottles with tap water.
i buy a case every few months. i refil my bottles with filtered water.
You could always get a water filter for your house and just refill your water bottle.
ps. most “bottled water” is just tap water anyway.
i use my water filter at home & take it with me in my mary kay travel bottle, too, but i keep bottled water for guests & when i need more than my little travel bottle can handle…
If they can handle drinking my city “sewer” tap water without getting sick like I did, I’ll consider giving up my bottled water.
I think it’s pretty damn selfish to say no to this.
If everyone stopped buying bottled water, it would make an enormous difference. You already drive around your senseless SUVs to tote around your enormous family of 2 whole kids, why not give something back for a nice change?
I would only because I enjoy the taste the water out of the faucet.
i gave up bottled water for large jugs of water (like california) and am slowly trying to convince myself that what comes out of my brita pitcher is just as yummy. when i lived near lake superior there were plenty of natural springs i was aware of i could go to and get my own spring water and bring my own jug, here in alabama not so much, and i live within 20 miles of a nuclear power plant so i’m sceptic about drinking anything tap.
My tap water comes out of the faucet as a milky white color. I don’t know what that means, but I’m not fucking drinking it.
Yep. Already did.
duh. I don’t drink bottled water that much. But I’ve been looking for the perfect reusable water bottle.
I’ve only ever bought bottled water for convenience very once in a while, say if I’m out and about and thirsty. I must say I don’t really understand buying bottled water as a regular thing, or a replacement for tap. Most bottled water is half tap water anyway, and restrictions for cleanliness of tap water and higher than for bottled.
If you really are worried about your tap water, why not buy a filter you can attach to your tap? Why go through all that plastic?
get a SIGG.
http://www.mysigg.com
I already did. I like my reusable water bottle. I even got some of my students to start using reusable water bottles (and other reusable items) during my “waste-free lunch day” campaign in school.Â
Recycle the damn things.
nope. i love bottled water, i wont drink it otherwise, i forget about it. and 99% of the time i recycle, so i really dont care what everyone says.
My house has well water because I live in the middle of nowhere.
I’m definitely not about to drink that. Bleh.
Why don’t these environmentalists make a bottle not harmful to the environment?
Fuck no! I need my bottled water, for a multitude of reasons.
Weren’t we all being told to drink bottled water just a couple of years ago?
I will probably continue drinking bottled water at the same rate I always have, which would be very rarely.
I have a refillable water bottle, so I just filter my own water and then I’m good to go.
but it really just comes down to recycling them.
Yes I would. I dont drink it anyway.
sure… I’d just buy one water bottle and keep it and refill it. Really the only reason that I DON’T do that now is because it’s so convenient to just buy one when I need one… and I don’t have a nice water bottle.
yes. bottled water is a ridiculous concept anyway.
no.
I gave up on them a few months ago. Anything plastic is harmful to the food and the consumer because it gives off its cancer-causing chemicals when it becomes warm and hot. That’s why it’s bad to microwave food that’s inside plastic containers.
Oh yeah… it’s better to just buy a hard water bottle to fill up with water when needed… they have filters and such to filter out the water! it really does save the environment a bit by cutting back on the bottles…I rarely ever buy water by the bottle now… Even then, I reuse the bottle!
Yes.. and please think about buying a stainless steel water bottle for your personal use. Plastic is becoming a new issue as well.
absolutely
yeah sure as long as I still get my water I don’t mind
of course. i can get filtered water for free from my refridgerator. why should i even bother buying bottled water in the first place?
i already did.
I used to drink a bottle or two a day at work and school, but then i read about how awful the plastic was. So i bought a nalgene water bottle and a filter pitcher for my tap and have been drinking from that ever since (almost a year ago).
It has saved me to date 500 dollars.
@saintvi - Can’t say I don’t agree about environmentalists, at least some of them. And what I meant is that specifically at home, you don’t necessarily need to buy bottled water, whereas you would need to buy a bottle of pop if you wanted it at home. Not that soda is necessary in itself, or that cans aren’t an option. Maybe we should have water in cans instead?
Yes
My mom read the same thing about bottled water, so now my family has been off bottled water for almost a year… =.=
environmentalists need to go hang themselves.
Nah…don’t think so.
Okay, so here’s the deal. Plastic? Bad. Local water supply? Depends on how old the pipes are in your residence. Compromise for all those who don’t want to risk drinking bad water? Buy a PUR 3-stage water filtration system for your kitchen sink. And use re-usable cups/mugs/etc… You get “clean” water and we keep the plastic outta the waste stream. And they don’t cost a lot either nor are they hard to install. I have one…. and I’m a….girl.
Yes, I’m giving up bottled water. I just have to finish up my supplies first. LOL.
Oh! One more thing (in case someone else hasn’t mentioned it) —
“Approximately 1.5 million barrels of oil—enough to run 100,000 cars for
a whole year—are used to make plastic water bottles, while transporting
these bottles burns even more oil.” (Source: Treehugger.com)
@angi1972 - Check this out and see if you don’t change your mind.
Already have, and now I have a hard time imagining buying it. I usually carry a reusable bottle (Nalgene or something), and I try to avoid buying any beverage that’s in a plastic bottle. It goes far beyond just the plastic in the bottle – there are the costs and energy used for transport, of the bottles where they’re produced and the end product. I’m sure the article goes into that. My whole family has stopped buying bottled water now.
Yes, just not much to give up there…
Nope. I will never give up bottled water, pop, tea, etc.
Being not only an environmentalist, but a believer in alternative medicine, I drink nothing but my own urine, which comes not bottled, but on tap.
I don’t drink too much bottled water anyways.
@huginn - haha, i guess we are going to just have to agree to disagree. And that’s fine.
For the record though, I too am a full time college student with a full time job. But I know that it’s up to you to decide how you spend your free time. And I’m sure I’m coming off as more obsessive than I really am… it just naturally fits into my lifestyle.
Your comments shocked me at first and that’s why I chose to respond. But thinking about it now, I know a lot of other people are thinking what only you have the guts to say. So I guess kudos for being brutally honest, even if I disagree.
Get a filter. Get a water container like a Sigg water bottle. Put the filtered water into water container and then smile because you didn’t contribute to global warming?
No… I am not willing to give up bottled water for the environment. However, I would be “for” people making more environmentally friendly solutions to distributing things like water or pop/soda.
I would be willing too. I drink a lot of bottled water and I hate tap water I can’t stand the taste of it. I would just by a filter and reuse a bottle or actually by me a water sports bottle and just use that.
But I recycle! Is it still bad for the environment if I recycle?!
Bottled water is pointless, and it’s more than just an environmental problem. Not only is it usually just tap water, but if it isn’t it’s probably water that is being taken from a water source from another country from people who actually need it. So basically you’re usually drinking tap water or water that is being taken from people who will now have an even more limited water supply. Filters and reusable bottles are a better choice.
http://www.thinkoutsidethebottle.org/
http://www.thirstthemovie.org/summary.html
sure
I rarely drink bottled water anyway. Tap water is good enough for me!
Sure. It’s not that hard. Just get a filter for your sink and refill a glass bottle.
If you don’t have a glass bottle, just buy some Sobe and drink it for the bottle.
Being someone who doesn’t understand paying for water anyway, definitely.
I don’t use/buy bottled water anymore. So I think it is a start.Â
I use the same water bottle refilled with tap water. It’s convenient, it doesn’t break, and when it gets gross, I finally toss it and get a new bottle out. I have the same case of water I’ve had for about six months.
I pretty much do already. I have a bottle that I carry around with me that gets filled with filtered water I get from home. It’s cheaper than bottled water and is better for the environment.
Sure. Why not just get a reusable bottle made of something else, like metal or glass? Or do what I do. I just reuse the same bottle over and over. That is, until I lose it…
Nope..i love my bottled drinks, but I do recycle everything I can.
I enjoy the convenience of bottled water (the bottles are also recyclable…), but I can be content with filtered/tap water. Now to find a nice reusable bottle that I can carry around with me…
Just saw a Ripley’s Believe it or Not rerun about a guy who made a floating island out of plastic bottles. He literally built a platform on which he put soil and grew vegetation. At the same time though, he’s got thousands of plastic bottles floating around in the ocean. Is that bad? I don’t know enough about it.
i’m more of a bottled water person :/
Of course I am. Invest in a re-useable water bottle so you can save the world & save money.
That only reason bottles water should be used is for when you go to Mexico lawl
Otherwise you can get a reuseable one and just refill over and over again. Come on people. Stop being selfish!!! We only get one world. Buying a filter isn’t going to kill you.
Here, we’ll solve the problem: You get ONE waterbottle and you REUSE it. Don’t just go buy another one and throw the last one away. Then you’ll save the environment.
No, I’m not giving up my bottled water because of the environment. That’s what recycling is supposed to do. Sure it might emit a little bit of smoke, but the water where I live is both very gross and a little bit sketchy too. I’m not drinking from the tap.
yes, but i live in a city with excellent tap water.
The tap-water quality in Southern California can be awful. No filter could clean it up well enough.
I’m going to be all revolutionary here and say that we should concentrate all this anger and fervor into telling the authorities that we demand cleaner water. No more mercury, please.
I don’t ever really buy bottled water. Just once in awhile. I have a nalgene bottle and that’s fine for me.
No, because I would be poisoned by my well water. Plus it’s convenient and tastes so much better than all the radon-ey goodness of our tap. I recycle the bottles on my own… I guess I just haven’t fully jumped on the eco-friendly bandwagon yet.
water tastes nasty anyway.
Sure why not. I could just fill up a mug thing with water and besides, some bottled water tastes like plastic.
Hell yeah. Tap water is so much better for you anyway… loads more calcium and other minerals =] if you put some in an empty coke bottle then stick it in the fridge then that should be fine.
I don’t understand why people buy so much bottled water. Maybe for camping, or long journeys, but just around the house?!
I always thought that’s what taps were there for…
Of course. What good is it to hoard all the water, only to be left with a destructed Earth?
I still used bottled water… but I reuse the bottle and fill it with filtered water for a week or so before I recycle it. If I had a dishwasher I would probably use my nalgene more, but it is so hard to wash and get really clean by hand, so I just use the bottled water instead.
I only drink bottled water if tap water is not available. I HATE PAYING FOR SOMETHING THAT I CAN GET FREE OF CHARGE!
yes … why not just get a water purrifier for tap or something? bottled water seems like a good idea now because its “clean” water … but what about later when we have nothing better to do with all those bottles? Buy a canteen or something and fill it up with tap water! lol
Absolutely. In North America, our water is regulated — more so than bottled water. So buy a filter and drink tap water!
Think about all the excess water we drink from bottles that we SO don’t need. What would happen if we sent all our bottled water to places that didn’t have good drinking water? I think we just prove how selfish we are when we drink bottled water.
im sorry but nope
Pshh, I don’t drink bottled water for the sake of my pocketbook!
The problem isn’t the bottled water: the problem is the people who drink the water from the bottles and then toss them into the garbage. Where I live, people are required to recycle those bottles, which means that if they obey the law, there won’t be a landfill problem with them.
I don’t make it a habit of drinking bottled water because there’s something that bugs me about paying for something that should be free. (And not all bottled water is actually better than tap water, anyway.) Whenever I end up with any of those bottled water bottles, I end up refilling them at the tap, tossing them in the fridge, and then drinking them later. People who see me carrying one of those bottles when I hike or bicycle may think one thing, but chances are really good that what’s in the bottle came from the tap. . . .
Tap water gets a bad rap, but if you allow the water to sit in the fridge for 24 hours, most of the bad taste (caused by the chlorine) dissipates and then you can’t really tell the difference between tap and bottled water.
Besides, I question any campaign that arises out of a corporate commercial, such as the Brita one on TV. What they don’t tell you is that in the landfill their filtered pitcher will last forever and a day. . . .
I already have. I live in Michigan, our tap water is great.
I think if everyone around me did, then yes.
Why should it be difficult to “give up” something nobody needs, except in a dire emergency situation?
I just spent a week in Cabo. At the smaller hotels, the water was filtered and safe to use – even to drink. We didn’t need to have bottled water there. However, we spent our last two days at an all inclusive, where the water was not filtered. You couldn’t open your mouth in the shower or brush your teeth with tap water. Sometimes bottled water is critical for your health.
That said, we keep a case of water in both of my cars and 1 in the house, as we live in quake country. For everyday use, I prefer to refill go cups with water from our tap at home.
Not yet but, I’m going to try my hardest.
I’m all for it. I have several water bottles floating around my apartment (and 3 in the newsroom at work), but they are the same bottles I’ve been refilling for nearly a year now. I protect them like they’re my young or something. I live in Kentucky–hooray stereotypes like raw sewage in our water and poor sanitation services to remove it–and the water’s fine. The tap water tastes fine in my little corner of paradise (Madison County, about 200 miles due south of Cincinnati). I’ve been drinking it in place of Nestle Pure Life (despite their alluring low-plastic bottle), Dasani, Aquafina and all the other vices. Tap water, in my opinion, is fine.
This brings me to a further point. Two actually. There is a happy medium between using bottled water and not; I think it would be a start if one were to reuse water bottles (not just saying that because it’s what I do). It does have its advantages: using/buying fewer bottles of water cuts down on the number of bottles produced and thus helps the environment; drinking one’s water from the tap (or well, or spring) saves money (you’re paying for it already); reusing bottled water still permits the convenience of a personal water bottle. Speaking of, a personal water decanter–something of a higher quality per se–could be a worthy stand in.
Maybe I’m tilting at windmills (“Hello Mr. Quixote, may I call you ‘Don’?”), but I think cutting back on using bottles would be a good compromise.
Sure, I mean, why not?
i’ve bottled my own water since an elementary school etacher told me that the statue of liberty will decompose faster than one water bottle. idk if theres a ny truth to that but it traumatized me as a child enough that i just take the few extra minutes to take my water bottle, throw some ice in there, add a little water and walk out the door
gave it up weeks ago. My friend actually gave me a SIgg bottle as a gift and been using it since then.
Already have years ago. I may buy an occasional bottle of water if I’m out and my re-usable bottle is not with me for some reason but that’s rare. Even then – I ALWAYS recycle it. We have a water cooler at home and we have 3 - 5 gallon jugs we rotate and take and have filled.

(Well… not you, you’re a dude…)
Yup. I just started to bring out bottled water since I moved to Toronto. When I was in Hong Kong I used to bring my own bottle and not plastic bottle.. but bottled water are so convenient in North America
only if I buy a filter… I usually have tried to drink our of the tap – but I think the water was making me sick, so I stopped anmd started buying bottled water.
I’ve already given up my bottled water. Saves money!
In some places you’ll have to drink bottled water because the tap water isn’t good. But if you have available tap water, why would you buy water? Bottled water puts ingredients to make you more thirsty so you’ll buy more of the product. Tap water often has minerals that are good for you– especially your teeth!
I have already….
NO
i like bottled water (besides, you can just collect the damn bottles then recycle them for some pocket change) and i’d cry when Crystal Geyser was suddenly dissapearing off of store shelves
The bottles should be cleaned and reused but who’s idea was that anyway- next we’ll bottle air and see if people buy it. Oh, they will. Oh wait we kinda do that already too- darn!
Yes..certainly…..
Well, if people just reused the bottles…
I can’t help but think that water from the tap is disgusting. I just think of this one time when I turned on a faucet in my bathroom that hadn’t been used for a bit, and dirt and mud started coming out! That was very surprising. After a few seconds, it cleared up, but it certainly changed the way that I view tap water.
I think it would be best if there was some water-filling station nearby.. Then I could just bring over a big jug and have it filled up with clean water. Haha.
never. we’re not blessed like america to have clean water soming out our taps.
Wouldn’t make a diff. to me, but yeah sure.
I barely drink any water in the first place, but i would definitely try to convince my brother, who drinks it like a horse.
yes, there’s an easy solution. If you are against tap water, then just buy filters and buy a reusable water bottle of a sturdier material.
